[Q] How to avoid bricking your device? - Windows Mobile

I`m going to start cooking custom ROMs for my diamond and i don`t want to lose[/brick] it, i want it alive.
The question is, what actually bricks your device, a wrong cooked ROM or too many ROM flashes? Or both? I know that importing a ROM from another device to your kitchen and flash it to your device bricks it. Are there other ways to brick it?
My device has about 50 flashes and about 40-50% are with MTTY[/TASK 29]. How many ~ flashes can take a diamond before brick?
Sorry if my english is bad!

One has to establish what the term "bricking my device" is really intended to describe. Historically, it is used to describe when a device cannot be resurrected from a non-booting state and is generally non-responsive to attempts to get into bootloader. However, being able to get into bootloader doesn't necessarily mean that you'll be able to flash and recover, as I have seen two occasions where the person could get into bootloader, flash the appropriate stock rom and when the device reset, it simply returned to bootloader.
I go through all of this to contrast the above scenarion against what some folks have started to describe as "bricking my device" ... which is a bad flash, where the device doesn't get past the boot splash, but is easily resolved by going into the bootloader and flashing a rom that is known to be good.
Generally, the risk of really "bricking your device" is low as long as you are flashing SYS/XIP/OS only roms for your device.
Most folks get into trouble when the start messing with the boot loader and / or radio.
Based on MTBF, it has been stated that the average flash rom included in these phones could probably flash somewhere near 10,000 times.
All IMHO ... you'll do yourself a favor and, in addition to asking via this thread, use google to search for existing threads to get a variety of replies, just so you have visibility into the range of answers that you'll come across.
Best regards,
-boggsie

Thank you for your reply! I`ll search on google too.
I think that this question has found its answer.
Thanks again!

Okay, I learned it the hard way , cooking and flashing already costs me 2 devices.
The first device I only went back to my original rom when my devices acting weird, most of the time after 10 flashes, but after 6 months my device died.
My second device, I always flashed the original after a cooked build but that one only lived for 3 months.
So I decided to get myself another phone (all 3 phones are Niki btw) and only flash through sd-card, for now I already flashed my device 200 times without getting back to the original rom.

Well, this is why i got scared, the chef of the ROM i am using bricked his second diamond yesterday. And the second device lived only 1-2 months, but it was a used one.
I made only about 10 ROM flash in the normal way, RUU and USB cable, but now i am only flashing from internal storage and before that i use MTTY.

Alright well i was trying to update my MDA to WM6 and it errored at 96% and now all i got is the three color thing.
My question is, how do i go about fixing it and reinstalling an OS?
You need to specify what your IPL/SPL is so we can tell if this is a G3 or G4 phone and what state its currently in, but... Since you have the rainbow boot loader screen, with the USB attatched, you should be able to run your carrier's official rom to reinstall it.
A lot of the ROMs will pause for 5 mins or more around the 95% mark (it varies, I've seen some pause like this at 80%, some 90%, some 95% or 96%), so you just have to wait for it to finish (or you get an error on your PC).
If you are wanting to load a custom rom (or one not from your carrier) then you need to go into the Wizard Upgrading forum and read the stickies at the top. If you have a G3 device, the Faria and Dr P stickies are the ones you want. If you ahve a G4, then read the sticky for upgrading a CID Locked device...
Good luck (and be careful. make sure you read and read and read )
Alright, thanks for all the help, i just need to find my T-Mobile disk now. lol. which might be hard seeing as im kicked out of my home and don't have all my stuff just yet.

?if you mean the cd that came with the phone from t-mob and the official rom. it almost certainly won't be on the disc as the phones are sold with the rom already flashed, and they don't want you to be able to flash another rom so they would not provide it to flash back to. you'll have to search for it. if you are usa t-mob http://www.t-mobileapps.com/downloadcenter/Software_List.cfm?selDevice=24
otherwise, google.

New ROM for T-Mobile (UK) help needed

Hello.
This is my first post, so please be kind to me!
I've spent the past few weeks trying to get my head around what to do in order to flash my HD2 which is on the t_mobile network
The original rom 1.43 i think is driving me crazy and I now dont care if I change the rom and it invalidates the warenty!
In order to HSPL I need to SPL first, but will my device allow this?
I've read through so many threads that I am completely confused and dont know which way to turn, never mind which thread to re-read.
Can someone point me to the sspl, HSPL to upgrade to 1.66
Thanks
Glyn
oh its the 512 version
you are over confusing yourself.
download hspl 2
instal it - choose whichever hspl you like (may as well go for 2.08.hspl)
flash whatever rom you like from usb. (don't forget to flash a compatible radio either before or straight after.)
Thanks for your reply......
so downloan the HSPL from here?
'forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=609477'
and as I run the program I'll get the option of which version to install?
What should I look for to make sure that the radio is compatible with the rom?
Thanks again and sorry for my ignorance
Glyn
best thing you can do is to read a lot. No need to do enerything in one mad dash.
get HSPL2 from HERE - end of the first post (but read the post, dont just skip to download, )
run it as administrator (right click, run as administrator)
for best results use a usb port on the back of your PC (i.e one directly on teh motherboard, not an external usb slot) it will ask what version you want to install. just go for 2.08.hspl (not 2.08.0000) and let it do its thing. the authors say you should match the version to the rom (so 1.43.hspl for roms that are 1.43 or 1.48, 1.66.HSPL for 1.6 based roms, etc, but it isn't critical, most will run on any HSPL, so dont go changing every time you flash a new rom, no need. If it doesnt work then change it.)
As for radio tips, a radio with .51. in the number, (eg 2.09.51.03) will NOT work with any rom that has the 576meg ram, enabled.
If you flash a rom and all you get when you restart is a grey screen, chances are the radio doesnt match. Boot to bootloader and flash the radio.
But most of all, read stuff.
What about shipped rom's that are .exe files? Do they include radios with it? Also, is there a post you can point me to that has a list of compatible radios with different rom's?
that's where reading comes in. the whole process has so many variants that there is no simple "a b c" that covers everything.
yes the exe includes radio (and also spl if you use sd card to flash -stay away from sd card, use usb and if anything goes wrong you just boot to bootloader and re flash)
the chefs give you all the infoyou need in the first couple of posts. the sticky threads in the rom development section will tell you how to do everything, and any problem you encounter has beenwritten about already. so read, search and read.
I suggest you flash Stock WWE 1.66 ROM first so you can have a feel of how much improvement
has been done from 1.43
you can download it in HTC website.
Thanks for your help so far..
I would like to go for the 1.66 official ROM first, so I'll find that on here first and find the exe file so I dont have to mess about with compatible radio's.
Just before I HSPL it, I would like a copy of the original 1.43 T-Mobile ROM, so better get searching.
Thanks again
Glyn
the original 1.43 T-Mobile ROM is on HTCs website so get it from there as a backup
THANKYOU!!
Thankyou so much for your help and guidance.
Last night I decided to just do it - the phone was so poor I couldn't take it anymore.
3 hours from start of backing up, to installing HSPL2, to flashing with 1.66, anf then restoring data
I cant believe the transformation - I am so pleased I didnt throw it at a wall!!!
So a massive thanks to the members of this community
im in the same boat... got a stock uk hd2 on tmobile and wasn't to flash a new rom but the information is overwhelming and im scared I will flash a wrong rom and kill my phone :0)

theres nothing to it. the 'normal' hd2 which you do have, is about the safest phone to flash in the world today, with HSPL2. The 'radios killing phones' problem that started last week is specific to the t mobile US model only, , the one with 1 gig rom.
If you install HSPL on your phone, and then only flash over USB, the very worst that will happen (from a software point of view) is that the phone stops at a grey screen, and/or only boots into bootloader, so you boot into bootloader, you flash something else, and it's fixed.
The T Mo UK stock rom is available to download as backup, (as is o2 and voda for anyone looking) in the 'LEO official roms' thread in rom development, first post, first link, first folder (1.43)
At any time, you can flash that rom from sd card (look it up if you need to) and restore everything, spl, radio and rom, , to factory settings.
In all honesty, so long as you are careful, methodical, don't pull out USB cables halfway through, laptop battery dies, etc , then you are more likely to get bricked from some freak incident, like , umm, battery dieing, heh.
Fear not! be smart, be careful, try to understand what you are doing and why at each step, read up on what an spl is, and the job is , as they say, sorted.

Hi Samsamuel,
Thanks.. just one more thing.
Saw on youtube that i have to format my SC card

is this so and is this referring to the sd card in the HTC or my own sd card used to download the 1.66 onto?

HD2 stuck at white boot screen/ can't install Roms

Hi guys, I've a problem with my HD2 and maybe one of you has an idea of how to fix this, because I really don't want to send it in for a repair
Anyway, my phone decided to refuse to boot out of nowhere. When it happened I had Artemis v9 or v10 installed on it. The funny thing is that I didn't flash anything when the problem occured.
Whenever I start the phone I only get a white screen. Luckily, I can still access the bootloader, even thought that didn't help me until now.
my guess is that the Radio is somehow corrupted, because when I try to flash a new one I get the error saying "Radio_V2 failed" and "Update Terminated". Not even flashing with task 29 works, because I get a "Error 270" and the phone restarts itself after like 4% of flashing.
I'm really out of ideas, I tried to flash a lot of different roms and radios, even the rom that the HD2 came shipped with.

What radio (if any) have you flashed? Check the ROM's dedicated thread you want to flash and see if the radio is compatible.
Im betting you've flashed the wrong radio
take the rom it was shipped with, name the nbh file to LEOIMG.nbh, copy it to your sd card and go into bootloader.
it will flash your old rom and should overwrite the old radio.
DN41
I installed Radio 2.06.51.07, which was recommended as far as I know.
I tried to install every "official" rom that I could find, but no matter if I apply them via SD card, USB or .exe, the install never finishes.
Tried to install just the OS without a radio and that worked, so I'm almost sure it is somehow radio related.
Now the problem is that I can't even send it to T-Mobile, because I there is no way to get rid of HSPL. BTW, it's the german T-Mobile we are talking about, not the US one. Is there a chance they won't notice the HSPL...?
so flash this one over sd-card: german t-mobile 1.72
what about performing hardreset? does the phone boot?
DN41
Tried flashing the TMO rom, but no luck either
Hard reset is strangly fast (only takes like 7 seconds) and only gives me a white screen after reboot. Apperently the HD2 shows me that HSPL is intsalled in the bootloader, but I can't change the SPL...
Already tried HSPL2, but no matter what option I choose, my bootloader always stays at 1.42 HSPL.
Edit: I would like to post pics of the error I get when flashing from the sd card or the bootloader screen, by the board rules don't want new users to post links.

I have exactly the same problem.
I believe radio hardware of my HD2 has failed.
This is not related to flashing an incompatible radio, as I have flashed 1.66 official ROM about three months ago and had no problems until now.
I got the white screen, when phone was in my pocket.
Not possible to update radio, update fails with "Radio_V2 failed" and "Update Terminated".
Not possible to flash any rom, flashing fails when it comes to radio part.
MTTY didn't help as well.
I see no way but to send it back for repair.
Hope they dont realize HSPL, as it is also not possible to change SPL right now.
Hi everybody, i am facing the same issues with my knew HD2. The fact is that i received it yesterday, while trying to flsah ENERGY ROM ..i flashed also the radio .. now got the white screen with the HTC green logo, and no way to hard reset ... phone doesn't boot, can't do anything !!!!!! volume + and volume - doesn't work !!! any idea any solution ?? I am about to try flashing with the memory card but no idea if it will work, im not sure cause even the HSPL doenst appear ... anu idea ?
I've got the same problem
Mine is a Telstra (Australian) HD2, and I've been using it for about 3 weeks fine. Then a few days ago, I took it out of my pocket, and it's dead. With my one, most of the time I just get a blank screen (no HTC), and most of the time it's slightly yellow.
I'm having the exact same problems, and have done everything suggested on this page, and others. I can't send mine back either.
I'm guessing since no one's replied, there's not really a solution to this.
If it is a failed radio, I'm amazed how easily they fail, and how many people seem to have this problem.
I have the same problem today. Anybody help?

i had the same problem with my Telstra T9193. i couldnt find any solutions so its on its way back to australia under warrenty.
I had a similar problem to this, though it appears I just fixed it. I can only imagine it's just a temporary fix though, as I previously managed to get it working and running Android only to white screen again the next day.
I did a hard reset and now it loaded the white HTC screen and nothing else. I tried installing a stock ROM from the MicroSD card and got the same "Update Terminated Update Fail" error because of the Radio. Retried the update about 3 times, and it eventually installed fine.
same here, i reloaded a stock from sd to relock it, which i highly recommend for anyone having this problem - in case it needs to go for repair and it just happens to boot..it took quite a few tries to have a proper flash and it booted only a few tries afterwards and then went back to only booting the white htc screen. so frustrating. and unfortunately for me it has to go back to australia for warrenty and will likely take ages to get back
I was stuck at multi color boot screen after hard reset. Tried multiple roms.
Solution: Use the 2.13 rom from here. Worked thankfully!

After being looooong on this forum, I finally got my first bricked HTC. I got all the same problems, white screen, no way to get HSPL gone, and no update via SD possible, no ROM update via USB in bootloader and no radio update possible...
Anybody knows how much it costs if I send it to HTC and they find yout it has been HSPL-ed?
Next with the bricked HD2
So definitely I´m in the same situation.. I have unusable SMARTPHONE!!
Even worse, because in my case i have no chance to send it to warranty repair - I was too disparate and curious so I opened my HD2 to look for an backup battery to erase everything that could have resist my countless tries to reflash, hardreset, flash RADIO, flash ROMs...
At the begging was the same (btw the same is still) : I took my phone and it did´t answer for waking it up. So I pressed red button to (soft)reset it. But it booted only to white screen (not the HTC one but "pure" withe w/o logo, w/o software info but with slightly yellow hue)
This was almost whole week ago... During that time I tried almost everything (I don´t have gold card - since I can´t get CID of any SD card I´m not able to have one and have installed HSPL 2.08 I´m ABLE to FLASH any ROM - even successfully reflashed cooked ROM via SD Card.!!) and the answer for me is probably some hardware problem....

I'm sorry, I just sent my to the repair center. Hope they will repair it under warranty. Otherwise it will cost me 100 Euro, just to find out I have to pay for the repairs. Then I can choose to let the device there (then I don't pay 100 euro) or let the device ship back (I pay 100 euro for a brick) or let them do the repairs which they will say how much it will cost on top of that 100 euro ..... stress ....

With the radio bricked there are only two things you can try to do:
1- You can go on using your hd2 without updating the radio. Try to download a rom without radio and install it, or ask a cook to prepare a rom (you can try an official rom if you want to recover the original SPL) without radio for you.
2 - Do what I did and sell the phone as bricked, because there's no way to unbrick radio system. I tried to save my HD2 by recovering the original SPL and sending the phone to the htc customer service. I got the phone back after 2 months and it was still radio bricked

Custom Rom Advice

I've been lurking in this forum for a while now, and given HTC's "We're not updating the Hero until we've milked the market for every last Desire/Legend upgrade" stance, I've decided to take the plunge and put a custom ROM on my unbranded GSM Hero.
There's just a few questions I wanted to ask before I go ahead, and was hoping some of you would be kind enough to help:
1) If I install a custom ROM, is it possible to go back to factory state? I know some of the FAQ's say its possible to go back to the stock ROM, but does that mean EVERYTHING returns to stock? I know this is apples and oranges but when I flashed a couple of PSP's you have a recovery mode at startup, is anything like this left behind when returning to stock?
2) Is it possible to brick my phone? If so, is it recoverable?
3) Can anyone recommend a fast, stable ROM? I was interested in Damage Control but obviously thats for CDMA Hero's not GSM.
4) I see a lot of people with quite complex issues like radio frequencies and battery problems, what are the odds of having something like that happen? Is it quite rare? Also are radio flashes undone by returning to stock?
Thanks for your time guys, I'll be updating here with my progress/Issues later this evening

- Yes, you can return back to stock state. You are correct, we do use a 'custom recovery console' to flash custom ROMs but this is easily removed by applying one of the official RUU .exe files found at Official HTC Hero RUU ROM Links. Connect phone to PC, run .exe, DONE!
2) Is it possible to brick my phone? If so, is it recoverable?
- I personally have only heard of people bricking handsets when, (1) Installing CDMA ROMs onto GSM handsets (you already know the difference so this shouldn't be a problem now), (2) Interrupting the radio update process (when applying update, phone may reboot a few times, do not touch untill you get the lockbar to pull down to unlock).
Iv had mine for about 3 months now and started as a complete noob but my phone is still living.
3) Can anyone recommend a fast, stable ROM? I was interested in Damage Control but obviously thats for CDMA Hero's not GSM.
- Im using MCR3.2 since day one, its fast and stable, what more could I ask for (apart from android 2.1).
4) I see a lot of people with quite complex issues like radio frequencies and battery problems, what are the odds of having something like that happen? Is it quite rare? Also are radio flashes undone by returning to stock?
- I assume its quite rare, again, Ive had no issues whatsoever. I dont know if running the RUU .exe will roll back to a previous radio or not but you can manually rollback, just use the radio update.zip first, then run the .exe if you need to.
One thing I would recomend,... Make sure you'v charged your battery 100% via the mains adapter (not usb through PC) when applying the custom ROM.
ruu contains a radio upgrade. or downgrade, depends on what you have installed and what ruu you are attempting to install.
you can brick your hero by flashing either a wrong radio or a wrong spl, or by flashing the correct ones of either and interrupt it during flashing.
if it was recoverable it wouldn't be bricked, the definition of "bricked" is that it serves the same purpose as a brick. however in most cases there is the possibility of reviving it via jtag, which is a highly complicated process that involves opening the phone and manipulating with the components directly (you could say "solder in a new processor" to express it in laymans' terms). so usually not worth the effort.
@ddotpatel
Thanks for clearing all that up for me
One thing though, with the official RUU files you linked, do you always just pick the latest one? Also do I need to worry about the "No Driver" description, or is it just run and done?
@kendong2
What would consitute a "wrong radio"? Are they not region-free? Or do you mean if I install a lower version than the one I already have? Also I guess seeing as I don't know what an SPL is I don't need to worry about it?
As for the Bricked term, yes your right. Its just coming from the PSP scene they use the term bricked to describe when the firmware will no longer boot, but the hacked in recovery console will. Bad habits and all that
I dont think the nodriver thing is anything to worry about.
Check the ROM your currently on through the settings menu so you know which one to go back to should you need to. I suppose it would look odd if you tried to return a handset for repair and it had an older ROM than the one it shipped with.
If you use this link HTC Hero Radio ROM Links you will be fine. They aren't region specific, I just used the latest one.
I think what Kendong meant was to make sure its for the GSM Hero not CDMA.
And SPL is the ROM I think, so again, as long as its GSM you're good to go!
Thanks ddotpatel
One last question, on the Recovery ROM thread linked to in the "Complete Newbie Guide" it says in rather large red writing "This recovery is NOT yet fully compatible with the new apps2sd method!".
Does this mean if I install A2SD as in the newb guide it will cause issues/break?

No, no,... If you follow the instructions in BTDAG's guide to setup apps2sd all will be ok.
The warning is referring to CM5.0.7 which I think is a HTC Dream / G1 ROM so that doesn't affect us guys.
Oh good, bid red text has a tendancy to put me off somewhat!
I've plumped for SLIDEVILLAIN 1.1.0 RC, and have a shiny new 8GB class 6 card on the way, should help with the craving to upgrade to a new phone for a while
Thanks for all your help, I'm sure you'll see more threads from me in the not to idstant future

Don't suppose you could send me a link of the memory card you'v ordered,... I think I'm gona start researching prices, speeds etc and get a new one myself.
Best I found so far was an 8gig Class 6 Transcend for £14 off Amazon but it doesn't state read/write speeds so am a bit reluctant.

Yeah, Iv had mine 3 months, initially bought as a temp handset to replace my Nokia 5800. Was planning to sell it on again this month and get myself a Desire for my birthday. But you know what,... I'm still really really happy with it. I think I'll be keeping it for another 6 months or so, at least until we get something similar to the HTC Evo 4G or the HTC Incredible in the uk.
I ended up ordering the Samsung one:
Urgh I can't post links, search for "Samsung 8GB Micro SD PLUS memory card Class 6" on Amazon
The read write speeds are in the comments, but to be honest I didn't pay that much attention to them knowing that the class 4 was the recommended speed and that class 6 is 50% faster.
Pretty much the same here, I was happy with it until the boss ordered a Desire and I had to set it up for him. The screen size combined with 2.1 was seriously making me consider one, but I realised if I could just have 2.1 I could hold out another few months.
And yes the Evo is awesome, can't wait for something like that over here, If it doesn't come then I'll be holding out for Froyo instead
SPL is the secondary program loader. Think of it as the bootloader. You don't need to touch it unless you want to replace the initial static bootscreen image.

[Q] hd2 mother board

guys,When i tried to boot another rom in my hd2 leo it doesn't start . if i'll buy another hd2 broken and will change motherboard will he work???
Change the motherboard seems like a drastic an final solution, obivously if you use a working motherboard it will work.
However, you're not saying what happened to the phone to prevent it from booting, before you even try to flash another rom or make important changes you should read the stickies of flashing and read more if you have any doubts, if you still have doubts you can always ask (in the right section) and most surely somebody will answer.
I don't know if you have considered or if you have already done all the possible things, depending on what exactly is you phone doing you could try to repair it, the bootloader is hardly completely damaged, there are (I'm sure even if I have my HD2 quite recently) several tests you can make in order to recover it, mtty, it could simply be stuck, you could try to flash it from SD, etc.
Perform a good an toughfull search in the forum, try to understand what you phone has and if you need it, ask for help, but be more specific or you could get no answer or even worst.
good luck
he doesn't start, only vibrator is working when i turn on him,I tried boot from sd from pc but in vain I think the only way is to buy another broken hd2 and change the mother board
try to turn it on presing the down vol buttom to enter in bootloader and flash it with a stock rom

If you cannot get into Bootloader mode, then you are ******.
I would assume that the HD2's battery has got a charge in it.
My guess is that you have a T-Mobile USA version of the HD2 and you have tried to flash it with ROM (normally a 1.66 Euro) containing a RADIO that corrupts the bootloader. This has been done so many times. The only options are:
Get it JTAGged
Replace the motherboard
replace the phone
If in warranty, tell HTC that it wouldn't switch on the next morning after you switched it off the previous night.
The last option is not nice; but the amount of folk complaining about the poor service from HTC Service, with genuine faults, then I'll not say anything.
