A few questions about the Froyo Beta on Kies - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hey - was wondering if anyone knew the answer to these questions.
1. Will upgrading to the Froyo Beta via Kies break the guarantee?
2. Will you lose all apps and their settings installed upon upgrading?

To answer the second first. Yes you will need to do a factory reset and clear the cache so all apps and settings will go. You don't have to but you will get lots of FC's which will make the phone almost unusable until you do.
As for your first question. In the UK I just pressed update and it did so I do not see how it can be called a Beta build. I would say it is an upgrade for UK users but for yourself I do not know.

I've heard of apps that can backup your applications and settings - is there any which is better than the rest?
Or would this not be recommended because of the leap from Eclair to Froyo?

Have a look at the 2.2 update thread. It was mentioned there that you should not restore some of the settings as they are not compatible. Best to do a full fresh install I think.

i'll rather wait for the full release.
don't want to be reinstalling 120+ Apps again in just a few days
good thing is, i keep everything in my AppBrain account, so it's simple click to install all again
still you have to accept each of the 120+ Apps for them to install... 120+ x2 clicks.... that's a lot of clicking...

[Q] Need advice..

I removed some of the system google services that i never used, but as soon as i did, my market stopped working. It just flashes white for a split second. I tried doing a hard reset but that didnt solve anything. Does anyone have any ideas?
thanks alot
You should explain what did you do exactly. What is removing?
My guess easy fix would be sideloading vending.apk from relevant Rom.
you need to figure out what files you removed. Market is tied into google. Thats why you have to sign into your g account before you can use market. If that doesnt work, I would look in the development thread and see if you can find your carrier stock rom and reflash.
Chances are you removed GTalk - since Market uses the GTalk protocol, it is a required service.
Regards,
Dave
Id stay well clear of system apks unless you know exactly what they are and what the consequences would be. Most are fine to remive, but others are connected some how.

I've already tried reinstalling gtalk, talk, and talkprovider.. Only the gtalk installs, but it still doesn't work. And I can't find a firmware specific gtalk. If I flashed a diff firmware would it install everything anyway?

Messing around with /system is seldom a good idea unless you really know what you are doing. At this stage you'd probably be better off just flashing a new firmware on the device, because this will completely rebuild /system.

If your wife's phone is rooted and you install this, you will lose root. If that's not a big deal, then go for it.
does the update delete everything on your phone?
if so, how do u backup/restore stuff? and how do you get the apps/games u purchased back without rebuying?
any other issues to know about? does the update reinstall att bloatware? do i have to put it back to stock to update?
i rooted to uninstall that stuff and to be able to install 3rd party apps, but never used a custom rom.
i'd really like to be able to use my 8gb sd card for apps since i have no space, so i am thinking of updating now and rooting later once it's available.
Why does everyone pay for apps that's what 4shared is for :-D

If you are already rooted, then you should seriously look at and consider Liberated Aria FR008. This ROM is based off the European Gratia complete with HTC Sense and does not have any AT&T bloatware, has an OC kernel and also used Dark Tremors Apps2SD which is much better than the native Froyo App2SD feature. If you like HTC Sense and want the Froyo 2.2 features, then this is the ROM to use.
If you choose to install the AT&T Froyo 2.2 update, it will wipe your phone clean and you will loose root and you will be stuck with all of the AT&T bloatware with no way to remove it.
For apps that you bought and paid for in the Market, these apps are tied to your gmail account, so if you reset your phone, you can reload the apps from the Market without any additional charges.

where do i get this rom, instructions? what about the cm7 2.3 version?
will using roms delete anything currently on my phone?
also, the wife has an aria. i guess she should just use the regular update, all she probably cares about are her contacts. how would she back these up?

Yes, flashing a new ROM will usually delete anything currently on your phone. If you are rooted, You can use "My Backup Root" to save your apps and settings, text messages and phone log and then restore them after you flash a new ROM.
Here is the official thread about CM 7 RC1:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=956223
Here is where you can download CM 7 RC1 and the nightly updates. Starting with Nightly 11 the code base is now Android 2.3.3.

is that the best one? issues?
i was waiting for this official 2.2 update for some reason, but now i realize i shoulda just used a rom. so i can backup with myroot (which i already have), but i'll have to reinstall the app before i can restore? reinstalling wont overwrite the backup folders on my sd card will it?
whats the best/free way to backup a non-rooted phone apps/contacts? mainly contacts?

Yes, if you backup with myroot, you have to reinstall myroot from the Market and then you can restore the backup. Flashing a new ROM will not wipe anything on your SD card.
For contacts you can export them to your SD card or sync them with your Gmail account. If you export them to your SIM card, the CM 6/7 ROMs cannot read them off the SIM card.
thanks

CM 7 is based on Android Open Source Project code. It is almost as pure Android as you can get UI and interface wise. You can still customize the UI with widgets and such, especially if you buy some from the Market. So bottom line is with CM 7 you can customize the phone however you like.
HTC Sense is the UI that is built into the stock Aria and now the AT&T Froyo update. That UI uses special widgets developed by HTC to enhance the user experience and these widgets only run on an HTC Sense ROM. Will you miss Sense? It's hard to say. It's really a personal preference.

i dont think i'll miss it after reading some more on it.
so do i have to start off with the original update-cm-7.0.0-RC1-Liberty-signed.zip
then update to a nightly, or can i just start off with the most recent nightly? wasn't sure since they are about the same MB size.
also, what about this app2sd dark tremor thing. do i need that? why is it better than the regular app2sd?

You can just flash the latest CM 7 nightly, but you need to follow the installation steps listed in the CM 7 RC1 thread first (i.e. format system, format data, format cache, etc.).
DT Apps2SD isn't as big of deal if you are going to run CM 7 IMO. If you were going to use the Liberated FR008 Sense ROM I would recommend it because it does a better job than the Froyo 2.2 APP2SD.

Swype Beta

Apparently, the new beta will not work if we've already got it installed.
Shame as some of the add-ons and tweaks sound like a good step forward.
Anyone got any ideas if they'll ever update the versions we've got preinstalled? or is it simply waiting on it to leave beta and end up in the store?
With the SGS1, swype was updated whenever the firmware was updated.
It works, you just have to "force install" it.
I've been using it for over a week now. Works great. Can't sync with Facebook (to get custom words) but other than that I'm typing away.
how do u guys get the new version 3 to install? I download the Installer from Swype.com by login to my account. Then when i run it, it say to disable swype first but i was unable to do that.
Thanks 4 the help!

Yep, you have to force uninstall the stock version, which requires root and something like Titanium Backup.
Or, if you like making things more difficult for yourself, you can go into /system/apps and delete Swype.apk and delete libSwypeCore.so from /system/lib and then install.
cool thanks!
Yesh I realised after we could force install it, I'm gonna leave it and hope they update with the next firmware. I'm running pretty close to stock at the minute, want to get a feel for the phone in it's naked state to start with.
Thanks for all the info guys. Much appreciated.
sweet, I forgot to backup my stock swype though before I uninstalled, what will happen when the beta expires?
so i installed the new version, reboot the phone and then swype isnt swyping anymore, just regular typing works. Then i tried to reinstall it and it said "Generating license failed".. anyone knows the fix for this?

Happened to me too I removed the beta with titanium and reinstalled
I like the principle of swype but find it frustrating to use due to the dictionary giving bizarre choices and editing being counter intuative. I look forward to trying beta 3 of swype but until Samsung deliver it on a future firmware update I'm not using it any more. However I have just discovered SlideIT and a m trying it out, it works just like swype and my opinion is favorable, it seems more accurate and easier to edit mistakes. It is a free trial and the full version costs money but it looks like a good alternative too those of us that don't root and therefore can't have swype beta 3 yet
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I'd been using the beta for oh maybe 9 months and it only ran out once and all I did was log back into the site and generated another license.
I look forward to Samsung rolling out another version in the firmware. The one installed seemed smoother than my old beta, who knows the new beta might be even better.
Since 2.3 editing wrongly spelt words became much more annoying. Though I swear it's slowly learnt how I type.
So it's not possible without root ?

Software update 2.1.0.11

My Nokia X2 pick up a software update of 219MB and it is being downloaded now. The existing version is 2.0.2.0.0.11. The new version is 2.1.0.11. Does anyone has idea about this new update? Or is it an already released version that my phone picks it up late?

Yah, you are right.
Great news!
Today we have started rolling out a new software update for the Nokia X2 Dual SIM (RM-1013) owners. This is a major/global release, bringing the phone software version to Nokia X Software Platform 2.1 (2.1.0.11), and will be available via OTA (Over-The-Air).
Key features of the update include:
Capture fast-moving objects with the new Smart Mode, and create unique photos by using the Action shot, Best shot, or Motion blur options.
Make your phone more personal than ever with live wallpapers and new lock screen widgets.
Keep your life synced with OneDrive and OneNote. Get up to 15 GB of personal storage space on OneDrive, and sync up to 500 notes to OneNote.
Access your favorite Google services. You can now sync your Google contacts, and access your Gmail inbox.
Find your way anywhere with HERE Maps - get turn-by-turn voice guidance with a free global navigation license. Requires additional HERE Maps update from Store.
Updated Store - new design to help you find content more easily, and better integration with 3rd-party stores.
Added local calendar support, call reject with a message, parental controls for Store, landscape support for mail and messaging, and auto-configuration of mail accounts.
By default your phone is set to automatically check for updates every 8 days and you will be notified when an update is available for download. You can also instantly check for updates by going to Settings > About Phone > System Updates and tapping Check Now.
The update package is 200+ MB, so for the best update experience we recommend that you use a Wi-Fi connection to download the update. Find the further update instructions from

citymapper crashing up on startup

hi guys,
I'm in real trouble here. I live in london and I use this citymapper on a daily basis more than I use whatsapp lol... now I'm at a loss because it closes on start up. I did update it to the latest version and that's when it started.
my solution is possibly having someone with a note 4 and 4.4.4 make a backup with titatnium and uplaoding it for me, so I can install the latest version from google play then wipe and restore data from your working update. would that be a solution? I've done something similar with whatsapp+ which is how I thought of it.
I've been in contact with citymapper but to be completely honest they are just like, is your phone rooted, what version etc etc. I asked them to do the above but no reply yet... and I doubt I'll get one...
is someone able to help me out or possible tell me how to resolve my problem?
here is the app I'm talking about
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.citymapper.app.release
on a side note I'm really trying not to re-install or wipe everything, it's a real task to bring my phone back to my liking's.
thanks in advance
Hi mate,
I had the same issue with version 4.6. Simply uninstall the latest version of the app and install earlier version. This is what I did. Use Aptoide and look for Citymapper 4.5
