Leaked Version Gets No update.?. - Droid X General

I just read that motorola is locking the leakers out of the official update. Now, is this even a trivial matter. Can't you just downgrade to 2.1 and then upgrade to the ota.

Yeah man, what you read is true. Good ole' Moto has decided to block us out. Luckily we can always downgrade and then OTA.
All I need is someone to post a video on how to do this. Step by Step like am a complete noob with no idea of what is going on. Anyone up for the challenge?

wouldn't you just use rsd lite and flash the sbf back to stock. Also what if this is a trap set up by motorola to get people back on their software. Im thinking...since motorola is so shady, anyway....that its just a little fishy. After the eris leak, i think a lot of people are pretty certain on a way out before they flash something. You would think that motorola would know this as well....im just sayin'

You have to sbf your device.. After that it still wont boot, so once your done sbf"ing you go into the factory recovery and do a reset, good to go

I would love it if you would write a guide detailing what the hell you just said. I have no idea what SBF is. Haha I know, I know. There are guides but I am sure there is more than one person who knows little about this and would like something step by step to follow.

To be honest, verizons networks check the build number of your device in order to see if you need the update or not depending on what version you run. I'm sure verizon could already of went through the list ahead of time and if it saw a mismatching build number to what its suppose to have, it could just block our phones ID from receiving OTAs

Thought I'd add the link from engadget.

I totally love my X, but Motorola's over-the-top hostility towards the modding community is starting to wear on me. I know that they could give two ****s about having me as a customer, but I am considering moving on to a Fascinate.

has verizon done this with a previous phone? I put a custom rom on a droid1 and then took it back to stock 2.0.1 and then upgraded ota. I was just wondering if verizon has done this to any of their phones before

Just found this from AndroidLive:
The Motorola Support Forums mentioned the following today…
"WARNING: Do NOT load the leaked 2.2 upgrade that has been floating around on the Internets. There is currently no upgrade path from that load to the official 2.2 load that will be released by early September. Unless you have some plan to flash your phone back to the current official load, you could be stuck on the leaked version."
So obviously we will in fact be able to flash back to 2.1 to get the official upgrade if we wish

MOTOROLA SUCKS!!! How can a cell phone company near the brink of destruction come back and act like they are a big deal. I should have waited for the epic and moved to sprint. I might just sell my x and get the samsung tab when it comes out and use a regular cell phone again.

The X is the 3rd android model i've owned on verizon, and i've never seen them do that.

Even if we did get blocked out (I doubt it, besides there is always a way around) why bother yourself too much with it. Those of us who loaded the leaked version obviously didn't have a problem with using leaked software. We will just load the future versions when they are leaked...

In response to the needing directions...look up "Droid X SBF File released" on these forums to find them. I would link it for you but I can't post links yet and I also don't want to just post the directions as if I was taking credit for them.

How does this even matter? There's a few ROMs in the works and we have custom recovery up and running. There will undoubtedly be a "vanilla" ROM coming out soon enough, and once that stuff hits, are you really gonna be like "OH NOES I NEED TO INSTALL THE STOCK OTA UPDATE!"? No, you're not. On top of that, worst case scenario: you just SBF flash and then install the OTA updates. "Problem" solved.

This strange, its probably the same build. Therefore no ota lol. Just a thought.

Like some here, I could care less knowing that it will come full of bloatware and blur... which no one likes. Oh, and that we will be getting even better firmware from folks like Birdman and p3Droid
MOTOROLA- YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF for letting such good hardware be sold with such an unusable UI.
When I flash stock and blur is running with all of its widgets up the yin-yang, I can't hardly imagine it is the same phone as to what I, and others, have made the phone what it could be.
I almost feel embarrassed to state I am a X owner when I am not talking to a fellow android user and they know nothing of the phone other than what they saw in the store=CRAP.

Out of all of us who want custom ROMs and made the effort to flash the leaked Froyo build who really cares if Moto blocks us out. Fact is we rooted our phoens and wanted Froyo so we did what needed to be done. To further add most of us I'm sure are removing all there crap bloatware to begin with. Bottom line IMO is piss on the Moto/VZW update. If it is anything like what was relesased on the phone it will be garbage and we don't want it anyways.
And as mentioned if people really want the OTA update not a big deal to SBF flash the .604 2.1 file and yo uwill be fine to get the update. Oh and for everyone reference the leaked Froyo build we have is NOT the official OTA update there is at least one or 2 newer builds already.

You should be able to udate to the OTA by using the update.zip the same way you did for the leak, if we don't get it over the air...

OTA update will/should come threw just fine. Now haivng it install correctly could be a whole different story tho as we DO NOT know the specifics on the file that was posted over the weekend everyone jumped on before it was taken down.
Put it this way tho I've had engineering units from mfgs in the past and even those update correctly OTA so I wouldn't be to concerned about it. Plus if won't take long for someone to actuaaly grab and post the update.zip once it is pushed out.
Yeah that would be good. I still haven't received mine.

Has anyone actually gotten the OTA froyo yet? I've read things that said it was within 24 hours of the 20th... Also, when you say loading a custom theme, that doesn't mean a launcher right? Like LauncherPro?
OTA is not out yet. All previous info about release dates was just rumors.
And no, custom themes doesn't mean launchers, since those are just apps. It means actually modifying system files like framework-res.apk for different status bar, notification area, etc...
You really don't know as every company handles it differently and Moto for some reason is trying to keep the device locked down. However if you look at past phones (at least the two Androids I have had)
G1 normally you got the option to upgrade but you would lose root or would have to wait for JesusFreke to get the file and root it.
The Droid Eris there were actually 3 leaks to 2.1 all which prevented you from getting the OTA because of the boatloader #, however a couple of weeks after they finished updating everyone HTC released an OTA for all leakers (which allowed everyone to gain root conveniently enough if they wanted to downgrade and get root)
So really no one knows except Moto but normally leakers get it one way or another either through OTA or having someone upload the OTA as an update.zip file and you flash it to your phone. Hope that helps and wasn't too much of a history lesson lol

I am talking about with the bootloader, not rooting.
But I lied I couldn't wait.
I SBF'd from LEAKED 2.2 to 2.1 (DONT GO FROM OTA TO 2.1 you will get hozed).
then OTA'd to 2.2
rooted.
Installed Superuser, updated SU.
Deodexed
Installed 3 Apps (Bootstrapper, Rom manager and TBH's app)
Installed Red spinning android bootimage
Installed Big Droid X Serenity Red
Applied Bootstrap
Applied ClockWork from inside Rom Manager
Backed up
So far thats as "brave" as I have gotten. I am more worried about his tweet that Moto updated the bootloader though then anything. Hate to see it affect things like Obsidian roms progress.
I doubt it'll hamper efforts all that much. They changed keys, that's all. I'll bet koush and others will bring us a 2.2 sbf and then things will be back up and running with the ROMs running the updated keys.
I will update as soon as birdman releases his update.zip, I almost took the plunge last night until I saw his tweet. A couple questions though:
1. I have removed bloatware, altered build.prop, and themed, does that need to be undone before updating?
2. For this that have taken the plunge already are the bugs from the leaked 2.2 fixed (SMS time stamp, battery usage force closing, upload problems, etc)?
You're going to have to be back to 2.1u1 and unrooted. I'm assuming that includes having your bloatware back as well, but if you're willing to be daring then go ahead and try it without the bloatware. Maybe the push will restore that anyway and you can just remove it again after you regain root.
I'm going to just bide my time. Tranquility 2.3.5rc + Serenity + 2.3.15 is VERY snappy by itself so I'm quite happy with that.

Let me explain my further reasoning of my actions. I am an android fan. Everything we want android has, that's why we like it. When motorola applied the encrypted bootloader that was one thing closer to something we don't like. Control and the lack of customization. If i wanted to be tied down to a firmware I would of gone to the iphone. Were not ever going to get pass the encrypted bootloader no full kernal port will ever come close. Changing files .apk names does not mean a full port your still using native apps. As android users we should of boycotted this product. I would love to have seen the same fate as the droid 2 - discontinued! The X is a disappoint and as android user we should of let this one pass over. The screen is ugly compared to the super amoled and the way I see it that's the main selling point on the X. So why wouldn't you switch to a better quality screen that'd only .3 inch smaller. Camera on the X is horrible for its 8 megapixel. Dual antenna is a gimmick, think about it, if you can't pick up signal with one antenna that's 2 inches away then your not going to pick sig on the other one. Point is android is a open source, motorola is closing the doors, instead of embracing and focusing development on this phone we should of directed toward another device.

Are we ever going to get 2.2

I love my phone but it's frustrating seeing other galaxy devices getting updates left and right while we get left in the dark

Honestly I'm losing hope due to the fact my girlfriend had a Droid Incredible with 2.2 even my old G1 has 2.2 it may be to much for it to handle it but it still has 2.2

It will get 2.2 eventually, but only time will tell how long. If we can get kernel source for the I500 phones, we should be able to get you a working kernel, and you may be able to use one of the Fascinate Froyo ROMs then. The biggest problem you'll have is getting the kernel until Samsung releases the OTA or source because of the different video driver used for the screen/ticker/soft keys.

I'm with you on this update lincoln3823. Very frustrating hearing other phones have froyo while a phone released in November is unable to get an update.
I love my phone but I'm going crazy with my RSS not working at all and SNS not working correctly (facebook-yes; twitter-no).
I've even reset my phone and it worked for maybe a couple of days.
Why won't they push an update to froyo??

If that's true, that really stinks.
Sure wish I new someone who knows the answer to this question.
Heck, I might even pay for it, if the cost (ROI) was worth it. Sure would like to see flash on my phone. Besides froyo has 57% of the market vs. eclair at 31%.
That's crazy considering the Continuum came out in November.
On another note:
I haven't rooted my phone and I noticed your signature as Rooted.
Question? Is it worth rooting? I've read Pros on it but haven't seen any Cons. What's the drawback on it? Updates? Can you revert back to stock if I choose too.

samsung submitted ec17 for the fascinate to verizon...and apparently that is still in testing...im just gonna assume it ll fail testing like most of their updates and never come out
the fascinate root crowd no longer really cares though as the mesmerize 2.2 officially came out w/ source....
but it seems like continuum updates follow quickly behind fascinate updates...so if hypothetically a fascinate ota occured like this week then it would probably be soon after for the i400
Ok, I was just fine tweaking 2.1 for now until something happened and we finaly got 2.2+, since Eclair isn't really that bad. Now I am starting to see 2.2+ only apps (ones that I want to try mostly) and it's starting to make me less patient. It saddens me since this phone had so much potential with the decent hardware and interesting ticker feature, but it is quickly being left in the dust as the little android that couldn't... /sadpanda
Looks like Samsung has released the Froyo source code for the Fascinate... that could be a good sign... Of course, isn't there a Fascinate on Rogers (Canada) that has had Froyo for awhile?
I know I saw it on android central and I got excited but then again we did get left behind once before

Gingerbread out to Testers

Looks like I didn't make the cut to be among the 1000 beta testers, dang it. I completed the survey within 15 mins of receiving the email, guess that wasn't fast enough.
Fingers crossed no issues are found and everyone gets it soon.

i dont know why people are acting like gingerbread isn't already here...
You don't want the OTA. The upgrade in SOAK will stop you flashing back. After its released the devs will dig into it to see what is different to the leaked OTA.

Just because you dont have the OTA yet doesnt mean you where not picked. When its full the survey actually closes so if you filled it out you usually get the Soak. And like stated dont blindly update the OTA if you are unlocked or dont want to risk not being able to downgrade.

Kenns gingerbread 4.5.91 for AT&T has no issues except battery jumping around. Install the patch to fix and bam perfect.

So, as of right now, I am running 1.83 with GladiAtrix, locked bootloader, and very happy.
When the OTA goes out to everybody who is on AT&T, who isn't in the SOAK, I know that I will have to flash back in order to actually get the OTA because of the changes to my file system. You are saying that this new OTA will prohibit me from being able to unlock my bootloader, when the time comes that I want to do that?
Personally I don't do custom ROMs (or unlock the bootloader) until the phone is out of warranty or Moto made it official not to release new updates. I can't rely on bugs in custom ROMs...learned the hard way a while back.
With that said, didn't Moto hint to be unlocking the bootloader with the Gingerbread update?

The OTA that was released a little while bricked people who tried to SBF down to a lower firmware. This OTA will most likely do the exact same thing.
I'm not sure if Pudding would work or not with this future OTA.

At&t version must be rewponsible for 30% of the market or less. I'm talking about the international version. Battery life sucks , wallpapers take a phone reset to re apply, widgets may go missing, some phones are overheating... of fourse, some have no problems at all, but this is certainly not a final release.

Flashing around with RSD is bad in general. There wont be a reason to flash back to older builds since the bootloader is now unlocked. One little glitch while using RSD can result in a brick. Careful what you post about the Moto-OTA test. The main email said not to mention anything about the soak. This is the 4th post I have seen about it now even if you didnt get in, the NDA was still agreed too and now violated again.

Just because I don't care for custom ROMs doesn't mean I want a crappy OS[x]. Who made up the rule that if you own an Android phone it's a requirement to install custom ROMs. You? If so, sorry son, your argument is flawed. Go troll somewhere else.

The OP said nothing about getting an email from moto, he linked to a blog that mentioned it. he even stated that he was not chosen for the soak test. you should write the author of that blog to inform them that they are breaking the moto NDA.

4.5.91 Upgrade - Is there a "no flash back" warning?

Since I am on KP's 4.5.91 I have not flashed the released OTA.
I see many people already bricking after installing the upgrade, then trying to flash back.
Do you get a warning either before downloading the OTA, or before installing the OTA that you cannot flash to a previous version afterwards?
If not, it's possible you could return your phone, blaming AT&T/Moto for not warning you about backwards flashing.
If there was a warning, sorry, but you will probably be SOL, and it's your own fault for trying to downgrade after installing the OTA.
A bricked device will display 0x1000 on the screen when trying to boot up.
If you see this, go here ---> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160408
Of course not, why would Motorola put in a warning like that. Motorola never excepts you to flash back to an older firmware.

CaelanT,
I updated to gingerbread on rooted atrix 4.1.83. I did not notice any warning as you are hoping. Though the phone's root privilege is no more, Motorola has enabled the sideloading and I am happy with that.

Are you serious?
Why would AT&T or Motorola be to blame for you bricking your device?
There doesn't need to be a "no flash back" warning... If you're 'flashing back' you are most likely using software you're not technically supposed to have to flash firmware you're not technically supposed to have.
It's really tiring reading these forums where people blame everyone but themselves for their bricked device. (Even after the "THIS WILL BRICK YOUR DEVICE" warnings..)
Technically, people shouldn't be able to flash back... we're not supposed to have RSD software or SBFs to flash in the first place.

Because technically, if they do not warn you that you can ruin your device by flashing to an earlier version, you have a case to sue them if you so choose to go that route. It's their failure to secure the software, updates, and upgrades they have which allows people to flash something you say they should not have, but is freely available to download through software update. Please do not spout what you hear from other people and think this makes you knowledgeable in any way. There are many legal implications with Moto and AT&T not disclosing what their updates/upgrades will or will not do, especially when they say "you will have unlock ability", then switch that at release with no warning, or for any number of reasons.
I can see you have a large contribution to this community by the grand sum of 5 posts which you have.
Now, I am trying to help some of the people out here who were obviously stupid enough to blindly flash an update released to them without first consulting XDA, because of course when you buy the Atrix it tells you to consult XDA on any matters relating to the Atrix!
Go back to ebay where you belong chuck!
BTW..........yes, I am very serious!
So the boot loader on the OTA is still Locked?!!!
yeah you could try that argument. they could give you the run around that you flashed using stuff not from their site or from their customer service portal and there could be some line in the warranty that would cover their ass from that stuff. but hey, worth a shot.
I updated to ota 4.5.9.1 during the soak and there was a big warning on the website, but nothing that I remember seeing when I downloaded and installed the software. They know the risk obviously. Surprised they wouldn't cover their behind during the install.

As many people have said.. Motorola does not give you any offical path to unlock your bootloader and flash a previous version. People like XDA do.
I have no problem with putting a custom Rom on my phone. I've hacked every device since my first Windows CE pda. The problem I have is with people like you that want to Sue Motorola because they... What? Told you to unlock your bootloader and try to flash unsupported software? No, they didn't.
Oh, and by the way please show me where you got the Official Motorola Atrix Unlock from.

The unlocked Bootloader is one thing, the fact that some users are bricking their phones after using OTA's is another.
Granted the 0X1000 is coming more from XDA users who have flashed, but Motorola needs to embrace the Android community better.
I'm not a fanboy of any company by any means, currently I own both a SGS and an Atrix.
^ With that said, Motorola needs to be a little more like Samsung.
* Paying attention to forums like XDA would be a start. Giving phones for free to developers would be another. (Samsung had no problem doing this).
*Getting rid of the bootloader FOREVER would also be in their best interest.
* Finally not forcing MotoBlur accounts down people's throats would be a friendlier approach as well.
Android consumers have helped Motorola get back in the game.
It's time for Motorola to repay the favor and start treating Android like "Android", and not like an iPhone...

Yeah, it would be nice if they'd support their more advanced users like Samsung and HTC have been doing. It seems like they are about to make some kind of change with Motoblur so maybe they'll ease up on the requirement to use it.

I've seen the Motoblur "improvements", but you still need an account, which is BS. Plus its a waste of time to freeze things in TiBU.
Between the last OTA that bricked many phones and the current Motoblur BS, I hope we can get Vanilla Gingerbread on this device more than ever. This will definitely be my last Motoblur phone I ever purchase.
Don't get me wrong I like Motorola a lot, but I also like to have a drama free phone...
I have a question for everyone that upgraded to GB.
After reading about the bugs in GB (like the "battery jumping issue" for instance) -
If you "could" go back to Froyo's latest build, would you do it or are you happier with the current GB?...
Nah.

Even with the few problems i'm enjoying having GB.. I guess I just like something new to look at.
I only miss a few things.
- The Happenings page that used to be attached to contacts. It was nice to be able to see the last post a friend made when calling them.
- Access control in Wireless Tether. (I can't remember if it worked on the Atrix or just my previous phone)
- Working Wired Tether..
- Setting review time on the camera.
