Last day with my Hero - Hero CDMA General

Getting my Epic tomorrow and CANNOT WAIT

cool device, but peeking into the dev forum for the epic it seems that there isn't a whole lot going on yet, looks like they just got root, no custom roms or any other cool things yet..

I expect it wouldn't take long for other stuff to start showing up there. The phone isn't even available to the public until tomorrow, so why would they have much there yet?
Enjoy the Epic! I don't like the design/look of it, but to each his own right?

So how much are you going to sell me that hero for? =P

good luck with a samsung product, no way id buy that phone at launch without any custom roms. i do know ive seen a ton of evo's for sale on craigslist the past few days. i may call sprint today to see if they can bump up my upgrade from november so i can get an evo, i heard they are in stock again.
btw we don't really new a new thread every time someone leaves the hero.

HTC Evo Shift Vs Samsung Epic 4G *ROOTED*

So I'm positive everyone see's this question all the time. But they always judge it on the stock phones. Well I'm looking to get one of these phones, but to ROOT them. Which one do you believe I should get and why? I'm also looking into battery life even though buying an extended battery isn't a problem. Also which rom do you think is best for your pick? Thanks in advance.
Will be posting in both sides to get more answers
Easy answer... look at the topics and responsees in both forums and decide which group you would rather deal with...
And then look at the rom and root options of both. HTC is on a whole nother level.

Well seeing how the Epic community jumped on my question much faster, with more people ... Lol jk.
But any more suggestions people? Thanks in advance
Do not get the Epic!!!!! I didnt like it as its made like ****. The shift is much faster and even my sister wishes she would have just gotten the EVO and shes not even a power user. HTC makes the best phones on the market and I will always be buying my phones from them.
Get the Shift, Root it, Install Shift Deck and enjoy an awesome phone

This. And I own an Epic (my wife has the shift). I'd never trade my Epic in for anything, at least at this point, but yeah the Epic forum is full of complainers, trolls, and guys with tiny wangs (or so I assume with how they have to constantly act like king s**t in the forums all of the time). And shift has a ton more devs, plus working cm7. But the phone itself is sweet, and faster (in my opinion, with the right rom), and has an independent number row. And the screen is bigger and looks nicer. I could go on and on about differences, but I've gotta run for now.

From everything I've heard, the CPU in the shift has the edge on the Epic, but the GPU in the Epic edges out the Shift. If battery life is important to you, I say hands down go with the Shift. I easily get a full day every day and my friend with an epic is always asking people for chargers, even changed all his backgrounds to black to save battery (doesn't save on LCD but on LED it does). He does everything he can and still struggles for a full day out of the thing. Now I speak from what he's told me, I've never owned an Epic myself. Overall I've been thrilled with the shift, does everything I ask of it with no lag and no complaints.

I certainly had this issue on stock rom on the Epic. I couldn't even make it through a work shift without the battery dying. But custom roms on the Epic blow that out of the water. I now can go a whole day of moderate usage and still have around 30-40%. But I don't know, I'm guessing with a custom rom the Shift still kicks the Epic's ass battery-wise. My wife is running CM7 (which the Epic may not see for a looong time), and I don't ever see her reaching for a charger or complaining of the battery. And being of the female variety, she tends to use a lot of the live wallpapers, widgets, etc...

The Shift now comes stock with Gingerbread from Sprint. There is no way to root it. You are SOL. I pulled all of my hair out when I figured this out.
Turns out Android (maybe not "Android", but the current ecosystem) sucks hard. Suckers like you and I come online and see threads and guides about rooting that simply won't ever work on our devices because they've been manufacturer updated. And sites like this don't seem to give a damn -- at least update the root "guide", mods.
Quite worthless. Don't fall for this BS. The Shift is again unrootable, just like almost all updated phones from Sprint. Chances are, with the devs having moved on or got lucky enough to have an old version of Android when they got theirs, all new ones will remain unrootable forever. #@(*$

You need to take a breather my friend. The stock 2.3 will get rooted in time, just like the 2.2 did. "Unrootable forever" is just an ignorant statement. If all you're gonna do is rant and rave a bunch of misinformation, please keep the post to yourself.
Back on topic...
I have a shift and purchased the Epic for my wife.
The Epic display is nicer, and the epic actually feels lighter (and is?) Than my shift. It also has more keys on the keyboard.
However, on stock ROMs my shift seems faster and has better battery life. UI's are a very personal preference, but I much prefer the HTC sense and overall software stack vs Samsung's touchwiz. It just seems to work better.
I've beeen running custom ROMs on my shift and most of them work well. About ready to try a custom ROM on the Epic to see if it works better...

ive been very happy with both my shift and the dev community here (who have turned me from an ignorant n00b-lout into a root-user) and all those who have helped me try and solve my problems.
As for rooting gingersense, it will happen soon enough, just give the devs here some time.
My wife has the Epic and I have the Shift 4G. I can't stand her phone, and she can't stand mine. Tho we both take our phone's off the charger in the morning and when we drive home, mine still is in the green where she has to use the car charger going home. Then again, neither of our phones are rooted. I have rooted her phone in the past, didn't seem to make much difference. Still running the crappy samsung software.

Stay Optomistic for 2.3 Root

Im always reading on here and people keep asking where the 2.3 root is and wondering if the devs have abandoned the Supersonic EVO 4G. Here is what I have gathered in regards to both of those questions.
The devs are working on the EVO3D to provide the community with root access on that device. From what I've gathered there are many things in the process that are similar to the Supersonic EVO 4G and some that are not. They have stated that they have Temp root available already and the Temp root should be sticky (Permanent) by the end of this week. I don't own an EVO3D so this doesn't mean much to me personally but what it does mean is that once the root becomes sticky for the EVO3D that we can look forward to there being more activity on the Supersonic EVO 4G forum. The devs haven't forgot about the Supersonic EVO 4G. Just be patient.
For more information go here.

well atleast in november i get the reduced price for the evo 3d!
After reading everyone's side by side comparison, I don't see the point in buying a 3D. I'm hopeful for a new 4G root soon!

I don't agree with that. Sprint doesn't develop phones; they offer service. So to blame Sprint for hardware problems (HTC) or for software problems (Android/Google) is unreasonable. I mean you can call up Sprint and stress your point but your not going to get anything done in a timely fashion.
but who has the final say on the updates its the carrier! it is just hard to believe that with all the problems with the GB update Sprint/Google/HTC and anyone else is turning a deaf ear and blind eye.I could care less about root I just want my handset to work the way it did before the updates. that is all im asking for i know it will never happen ..
sorry for the rant ....Dont post much here but read and search ALOT
you make it sound like there are only a couple devs for the EVO and they have all abandoned it for the EVO3D. I guarantee you only a fraction of the people who have been working on the EVO have a 3D now. It's not like everyone jumped ship.
It tooks months to root the last update right? Give it some freaking time people.

Exactly. I really think it will be rooted soon enough. The 3d is being worked on but even with all the work, HTC still needs to unlock it. They said they would unlock bootloaders for future phones but never specifically said the Evo3d or the Sensation.
I wonder what will happen if for some reason HTC decides not to do anything and people get stuck with the Evo3d that is unrootable. Too risky for me. At least we know our phone has been rooted many times.
There is no such thing as 'un-rootable'...
Comparing my wife's now unrooted Evo (thanks to a new refurb) side by side with my 3d....The 3d kills the OG Evo. That being said.....I still prefer her rooted Evo 4G over my stock Evo 3d.........Patiently waiting to root both. I'm sure it will be done. Both phones still have huge communities.
I wonder if we got together a bounty maybe it would be paid a bit more attention. I got a.replacement last week and its driving me crazy not being rooted. I really miss cm7 and I'm eager to try a few other roms. Considering I'm about to buy a used rooted EVO for the time being id rather donate to a developer instead. I have no problem paying someone for their.skill if I .don't have it. Hell I bought easy tether pro for $10 cause my EVO is my only internet access .

Coming from the Moment....

What's up guys...Just thought I'd drop a line and let you know I'm excited to finally have an Evo. Unfortunately it's the 2.3.3 that I bought from a buddy on the cheap in mint condition so I didn't have to use an upgrade.
Had rooted and flashed the hell out of moment nonstop so I'm anxious to see the exploit soon for 4.24. I've been on the XDA community for a while now just reading as SDX would love to port over themes that you guys had over here.
Anyways, thanks for the knowledge I've already seen from the users in this community just by reading through so many threads you guys have put up.
Welcome. Former Moment owner here as well, also stuck with 2.3.3.

Sucks doesn't it? Man, I will say this, the devs for the Moment were awesome and they made the Moment 10x what it should it have been. That being said though, even a stock GB Evo kicks the **** out of it that's for sure.
But I loved my Moment strictly because of the guys at SDX and can't wait for the devs here to kick the door open on 4.24 so we can start playing again.
I agree. I enjoyed the Moment a lot but traded it toward this one when I was vacationing in Florida last month and could not get a gps lock to save my life. The last ROM I ran was Keylime. I see they ported a new 2.2 update for the Transform.
I had the worst luck with the moment. I went through three cuz theyre aweful phones with tons of glitches. Then they said they discontinued the moment so i got the intercept. Just as bad. Now im here with my wonderful evo

Fellow Moment owner/Dev here, too! Matter of fact, my old Moment just got sold by the guy I sold it to the other day, so it's still kicking. Most under appreciated phone ever.
It sucks you guys just coming onboard with the Evo are handcuffed with out root yet, but patience will prevail! And once you get it unlocked, be ready for a whole new world, compared to the Moment. Fortunately, a stock Evo is a hell of a lot better looking than a stock Moment!

I have to agree. I love my Moment, it was just getting a little long in tooth. My son is currently using with DC13s ROM. The Evo is an upgrade though.
And OP, welcome to the Evo world. Be careful though. The otaku here are worse than the Apple fanboys.
Hell, I was one of the fortunate ones that had a Moment that didn't give me any issues. The only real issue I ran into was moving to 2.2 EB and losing my GPS capabilities. GPS always worked perfect when on 2.1 but that jump to 2.2 always killed my GPS period.
HipKat, I remember seeing you all over the SDX boards and there are thousands of your posts that helped me with my Moment, so many thanks for that.
GitHub, I remember seeing you on SDX as well and yes, I like to lurk and read before I post anything on boards. That being said, I knew the unfortunate circumstance of jumping to a 4.24 EVO even before I bought it, but as stated earlier, even a stock EVO is better than the maxed out Moment. But you DEVs over there at SDX made that phone astounding compared to what it was stock.
I'm just sitting like everyone else waiting for the geniuses to crack this 2.3.3 EVO....in due time.
TBH, I flashed back to my Stock/Rooted nandroid the other day, and it's not so bad, really. Of course, I was only there for a few mins to clear my GPS before flashing MIUI! lol
Glad I helped people out over there. Like here, I jumped in the pool headfirst!
Ditttto. Former moment here man name was Sgtstew76 over yonder at sdx. Man welcome over bro, GREAT PEEPS HERE IF you search before posting lmmfao.....
Hey are u rooted on that thing? Oh no...... well sit back and hold yer breath like the REST OF US......
I am still over at SDX but use the handle DarkPhoenix. It was already taken here it seems, so I used my secondary handle.

Things getting a little stale???

From the development side of things, I'm thinking that just about everything that could be done with the Evo, has been done as far as porting and builds. I know ICS is the new hot ish, but I don't think the Evo has the hardware to run this thing to its full capacity. We struggle squeezing new Sense roms onto our phones and there are always issues with something...even with AOSP, there are limitations. I love rooting and romming and flashing as much as the next guy, having done so for a year. I'm stuck on Sprint for the next 2 years, thanks to emancipating myself from my girlfriend's contract, I had to sign a new 2 year agreement and lost my upgrade til next October, if I didn't do that it would have cost a $120 termination fee...so I'm stuck with this Evo for almost another year and not happy....I wanted to upgrade to the Galaxy SII, was told there is no way, and I don't have $600 laying around. The EVo is an amazing phone, but I think its time is about up. Thank you to the Devs for all their hard work in keeping the EVO as relevant as possible...catch you on the flip

I just don't think our EVOS can handle these Roms ...and if they do, it wont be at the full potential...look at the 3.5 roms ...you gotta jump through hoops just to get enough memory to download an app. I like your optimism though HipKat....None of these devs even have an Evo anymore...they are just doing builds because they get bugged to death about and so many of these HTC phones are similar in hardware. Here's to hoping we can squeeze these things on our phones and they can run right! ^©][€€¶~

I feel your pain at times man you feel like you seen it all man trust me sooner or later you gotta cure the itch by playing wit your own rom that's what I'm starting to learn playing with apps first theming then rom theming then full out rom build try it man this site has so much info and knowledge.....and flame wars lol but really don't just be a flasher become a contributor and your feelings will change

I have ran several 3.5 roms and never once had an issue with lag, battery life, or storage. I mainly run aosp, but I have flashed pretty much every rom available for the evo, and they all run just fine. I'm not too sure what hoops your jumping through, but evo development will be around for quite some time.
So i kinda see where you're coming from, but than again I kinda see where other users are coming from too. I think some devs have finally left the evo and gone somewhere else. I don't see many updates from the older devs myn, virus, azitio, but i'm also seeing new devs or maybe just new to the evo , are making some great some great roms. The ICS rom I've been messing around is really fun and fast. Makes the Evo enjoyable. So I wouldn't throw in your evo for a new phone quiet yet. Not to mention , i still think the EVO is a top contender than some of these new phones coming out. The Evo 3d wasn't anything special, and galaxy II wasn't that awesome either with all the hype. Duo core processors in phones are great but, are still NEW. I'm sure something special will come out eventually that will manually wash your car, but for now I'm happy with my Evo

ICS takes less space than stock sense. I don't think memory will be an issue.

^^^sent from my Nexus S 4g^^^Really?
Yeah right now, how about when EVERYTHING in the rom is functional? Right now these pre alphas are nowhere near being fully capacitive and are already 20mb more than cm7 is...don't forget your 60mb gapps package on top of that, and then all your own apps, themes, pics, and music....

ICS is defragmented, meaning it needs less resources to run as it has a far better optimization than previous builds.

As far as I've seen, the HTC Evo 4G is the most modified phone ever. There's more ROMs, kernels, and tweaks than any other phone. I believe there will still be more cooking and developing to come, but with the new release of ICS, devs are knee-deep in code. So just be patient, when they get all the drivers sorted out and a stable public release, things will be booming again.

The Moment was the same way. Untold amounts of Dev work and is still being Dev'd to this day! lol
AS for jumping through hoops, A2SD is standard these days. A Simple flash of A2SD when you flash your ROM isn't jumping through hoops. Nor is moving Dalvik to SD Card. One simple command in terminal.... done!
I, too, have very very few of the problems that people complain about on any ROM. Very few have given me issues.
I was kind of feeling the same for a bit...I've been on Synergy for a while because I haven't really seen anything else worth flashing, and I absolutely HATE ASOP (AOSP? whatever.) ROMS. I don't understand how anyone could go from the amazing, fast, and simple Sense dialer to a dialer that takes forever to actually find the contact in your list then call. Now with ICS ROMS starting to come out, I'm excited again and hoping someone will make a nice Sense ICS ROM so I can enjoy my phone even more.
You could bite the bullet n pay the etf. It's cheaper then 2 years of contract payments...

My Goodbyes .

I know I didn't contribute to making this device a success but I just want to tell you devs in this forum thank you. You guys have been so awesome this pass year and you guys have taught me so much about life in an odd way. As I get ready to give up this device I just wanted to let you all know you are all awesome and I'm glad that I stuck around long enough to see new devs rise ( Dastin , Matt). That just goes to show you, this phone never dies. I will always remember you guys names and all just don't ever forget me. and I will always be lurking somewhere in the shadows .
See ya, you will never be forgotten!
long live the heroc!
I didn't want to start a new thread so I'm posting here. I'm outta here and by here I probably mean all of xda because I went to the dark side. Gonna try an iPhone for a while. May be back on Android after 2 years, but maybe by then we'll all have cochlear implants and not need phones at all.
Thanks to all the helpful people here and of course the devs who kept my interest in my old hero for so long.

Your gonna go from the guy who had a the feed of when a new cm nightly was ready to an iPhone? You gonna jailbreak it? Haha
I'm moving on as well. After 2 full years with a hero I now have a E4GT and it's everything I dreamed a phone could be. But like so many others, the hero started me on all this rooting non sense and it will always be "my first". Thanks to all the devs, jaybob, aosp, nfx, toast, darch, zenulator, and all those guys who moved on along time ago. Maybe I'll se you around.

Yep. I just reclaimed the twitter feed that was the HeroC bot the other day too since they aren't doing nightly builds anyway. I like the iPhone (fast, well built, I love it's flat on both sides too) but it's too restrictive and I'm a little frustrated by that. It'd be nice if they had a similar "share intent" api. I'm probably going to jailbreak it but I'll wait a few weeks until they get the bugs worked out. The jailbreak isn't out yet but should be any day now.
