Sprint 23% recurring monthly credit for students - EVO 4G General

I you're a student and on Sprint, this might interest you.
http://www.studentrate.com/STUDENTRATE/all/get-all-student-deals/Sprint-Student-Rate-Member-Discount--/0

Is this one of the discounts they're discontinuing next month?

Read the fine text: Has to be used online, and from what I gather, you'll basically be renewing your contract for another two years, signing a new contract, or adding a line (see first consequence).
While 23% is nicer than the 20% I get through working for a municipality, I'll stick with my 20% for now. Thanks though!

They originally offered 15%, which I signed up for at first, then about a month ago they upped the discount to 23%. Think they also have a T-Mobile 25% discount. All you need to sign up is a .edu email addrress. Doesn't even have to be yours, just get someone to let you use it.
Now I get 25% off recurring fees per month and 50% accessories through work :O

I wanted this deal but the EVO's been sold out online since the release.

Fortunately I ordered online at midnight from the studentrate site on release day and had an EVO 3 days later. I feel bad for people who have been waiting 3 months. With the 23% discount my bill is $70/month after taxes and everything. It kind of takes the sting out of the $10 charge, but the thought of paying $10 less with another smartphone just brings the pain right back.

Any other discounts that I dont have to resign 2 years for? I just got the Evo and im paying 100+ a month on this 79.99 play ugh, help!

Any way to get the student discount by calling?

If you just bought your phone and service with Sprint, I suggest hopping on a discount soon because it will only extend your contract for a month or however long you've had your phone. It doesn't add 2 years to the end of your contract, it just starts a new 2 year agreement. Unless you already had service with Sprint, you won't be adding much to the length of your contract if you do it soon.

I bought my Evo through Studentrate when it was first released and have the 15% discount. Are you saying that I can somehow switch that to a 23% discount without buying anything? Anyone actually done that and if so, how?

I don't remember exactly how I did it, you just click the link for the discount at the studentrate site. I think down at the bottom of the RI Sprint page it will say something about adding a discount to a line. Then you enter your info and Sprint will notify you if you qualify. YMMV.

Yes it can be done. S.W.I.M. signed up with the 15 percent discount and as soon as the 23 percent discount became available...he migrated to it.
Actually what you should have done, since you are a member over there, is read the 30+ page thread about this.

you dont need to purchase your phone through them or extend your contract. I got this discount directly through sprint, it was 15% when i first signed up back in october. I had to be very persistent, it took me more than one call. You also have to have the primary account holder be the owner of the .edu email address. I will try to get them to increase my discount to 23% now that it is a higher discount, maybe they did it automatically I didnt check my last bill yet.

The normal student discount is 15%, but there is a discount only for members of a certain Rhode Island education association that is 23%. Not every student is eligible for the 23% so I doubt Sprint increased your discount. When you sign up for the 23% discount online it clearly states that your contract will be renewed, but maybe by calling a Sprint rep like you did, one might be able to keep the same contract termination date with some haggling.

I get 23% off for being a Chrysler employee. Also can upgrade every year.

Go back to your SR account, go through the same steps as when you were ordering, get the new code, then go to the website that's given, apply the code and you'll receive an email within a day stating that you've been approved for the 23% discount. I've been rocking it for 2 months and I'm kind of pissed that I'll be loosing it on the 3rd line.
Oh, BTW, did you ever get your $50/per line invoice credits for each evo - should have been on split over the first and second bill. We never got ours, so I called, chatted and finally got the $150 (3 evos) today. Now I'd like to know where that damn rebate is...

I forgot all about that invoice credit. I'm checking my last two bills and I'm not seeing any credits. Luckily I keep all paperwork and I have the original order invoice that lists the credit that I should receive. Who did you call? Studentrate or Sprint?
edit: My rebate shows that it has mailed so I'm not too worried about that. Already got and cashed the 25 bucks from studentrate.

Evo available on Wirefly for $189.99 with no MIR + $50 Bing Cashback

Well, I certainly woke up to a pleasant surprise. I've been stuck with having to buy the Evo on Wirefly to claim a hundred dollar savings I had won, only to see that the final price is thirty dollars lower than I expected! You pay $169.99 with a 35 dollar activation fee. There's no taxes, and the FedEx shipping is free.
For those of you wondering, Wirefly is a reputable place to purchase from. Two weeks ago, I purchased two blackberry Curves and a Hero from them with a new contract. They waived the activation fee via a promotion, shipped it within twenty four hours of ordering via two day FedEx for free, and the phones arrived in two days after it was shipped. The only problem is speaking to their sales department; it consists of nothing but overseas representatives who are difficult to understand at times and try to push device protection on your devices constantly. If you order online, though, there's absolutely no issues. They allow you to check on the status of your order, and include every detail of the purchase and plan in the sales receipt if you want to make changes.
Just thought I'd share this great deal .
Edit: Oh! I also forgot to mention that Wirefly is a partner of Bing Cashback. When you order through Bing, you get $50 cash back on your account. That brings the total cost of the device down to $119.99. Sounds good to me!
I have used Wirefly 3 times before and they are great! I am impatient and do not want to wait for my phone this time though haha
That sounds pretty awesome! I'm going to have to see what I can do with this one.
If ordering from them do you know if I can port a phone number?

Yes, you can port your phone number through them. I transferred my parent's and brother's numbers from Metro PCS to the Sprint phones without a problem.
I wonder what will happen if someone tries to upgrade who is not eligible for an upgrade and who is still on contract. I went through the motion of buying it there and the final price came to $180 or something. Wonder what would happen after I get the phone.

can't you just call up sprint once your order is processed to add the discount? nowhere in their terms state you can't add discount; it says you can't switch to a lower service plan, but adding a discount isn't lowering the service plan
here's the terms of their instant discount:
INSTANT DISCOUNTS
Wirefly promises you savings in the form of instant discounts with no rebates or gimmicks when you sign up for wireless carrier service. Delivering on this promise means that you must agree to maintain your agreement for a minimum of 6 months after activation. Deactivating your phone, or downgrading features or the rate plan, may lead to additional charges.
When you sign up for wireless carrier service through Wirefly, we discount your phone purchase price by an Equipment Discount amount ranging from $200 to $300. By ordering through Wirefly, you agree to repay this discount if, during the 181 days after your new equipment is activated, if you:
Fail to pay your balance due to your carrier each month
Disconnect this line of service
Transfer this equipment to another line of service
Change your carrier service rate plan to a lower monthly service rate plan
Deactivate the email/data feature if one was required at the point of purchase
Transfer/port an existing phone number from another account if this is a new line of service
Replace an existing account with this account if this is a new line of service
Return or exchange your phone and it is not in its original, new condition with no more than 30 minutes of usage
If you break any of these contract provisions, except as a result of a documented service quality issue related to the carrier service, you authorize us to charge your credit card in repayment of the Equipment Discount.
EDIT: they changed the price to $189.99
As of 4:30 this afternoon, Wirefly has officially run out of HTC Evos. The site lists the next shipment time in five to seven days. Fortunately, I was able to get my order placed at 4:00. Unless you really want that $50 rebate, I'd look toward other stores.
These things are selling out an alarming rate.
Now it says shipping within 20 days...
Oh man. Still $50 is probably worth it considering I still have my iPhone for the time being.
i know letstalk is getting shipment June 10, but they still have backorders they need to fulfill; don't know any other place where i can get it without waiting for the mail in rebate
sprint online store has them in stock and can receive in 2-5 days, but not willing to pay $1049 now and have to wait for rebates for 2-4 months

You couldn't be more correct. I stupidly placed the order for my parents and brother via Wirefly's sales department via phone, and it was a horrendous experience. It took over an hour for the idiot to understand what I wanted, write my name down properly, and to shut up about the extended warranty and accessories.
That being said, that's what the online store is for. It's just like the rest of them.
Also, wow. Shipping within 20 days? I was 15 minutes away from having to wait a month for my Evo to arrive? Insane.
I got lucky and got my order in before they raised the price. 169 + 50 bing cash back plus avoiding 45$ in taxes here in CA. It arrives tomorrow =).

Holy crap, shut up! Mine is arriving tomorrow as well! . Of course, I placed my order when it was back at $189.99, but it's still a great deal.
Any idea what'd happen if I tried to order this even though I'm not eligible for an upgrade from Sprint? I'm trying to see if I can grab one of these to participate in development. Although, I'm not sure I'm willing to blow $450 for the privilege.
Ok. I'm on Wirefly and I want to add this phone as a new line on a family plan.
I am seeing:
Service Plan: $9.99/month
Sprint Data Pack - mobile web, web-based email, and basic Sprint TV/Music: $15.00/month
4G Premium Data: $10.00/month
What's that $15/month part? If my family is already on the Any Mobile Any Time with data included, is that required?
I want to try and put this in ASAP!

It does look like I can get this for $189 (+$50 bing cashback) if I select that I would like to extend my contract with Sprint. I'm a little curious about this, you'd think that I shouldn't be able to do this, but at the same time Wirefly probably has no idea that I started my contract in November 09. I'm just worried about what happens when I get the phone! Is no one the wiser? Do people just not know? Maybe I should try this out and give you all an update as to the outcome. I'm willing to bet if there's some kind of foul up and a cancellation charge appears on my account, I could possibly settle it with Sprint feigning ignorance. It's not like I want to jump ship or anything after all, I like Sprint.
Hope you find out. I'm on my hero and not due for upgrade or anything... I wanna upgrade to evolution from hero, but don't have hundreds of dollars

I think they waived my activation fee because they added corporate discount.
I think if you have any sort of discount they will wave the activation fee. I'm a State of MA employee and sprint gives us 15% discount. (nothing amazing but it helps).

It actually comes out to $10 more than last month as promised.
Did anyone else notice a mysterious $1 fee for "June 4 - June 6 Premium Data"? Could that be pro-rated from the $10 charge? Maybe that time period was before the June billing cycle?

It states you have to purchase the phone through the StudentRate store, but the Epic 4G is not listed for sale/pre-order. Then, the code says it expires on the 31st, so how can you even use the deal if the phone isn't available for sale yet?

EDIT: So been checking through Google Search with a few terms and not much comes up, there is a blog post for college students about how great and beneficial the site is with a few informal testimonies, and some people post about it on Facebook. Seems to be very much in the shadows, not many people know about it, yet at least.
if you click the discount links, it takes you to the sprint site . if you select a phone and go to the plan pricing step, all of the prices reflect the appropriate discount. I went through the checkout prices and right before you pay, the discounts were all applied. IMO it seems to be real.
anybody did pre order on this site yet?
yea I preordered from them. Had to mail in a form with all of my account info to give to sprint to upgrade the account. It said overnight shipping so I'll probably get billed on the 31st and get the phone on the 1st
Unfortunately it seems this deal isnt for everyone. Upon clicking the link for the discount, all it lists is a 15% discount, and browsing the phone selection doesnt bring up the epic at all.

Oh ok, thats where i was confused at, my mistake.

Did you have to pay an activation fee with your Xoom?

Verizon contacted Engadget and stated today that the activation fee and month of service for those buying the Xoom at full price is no longer necessary.
I'm curious if you had to pay the fee or not. I intend on purchasing from Costco when they open in about 3 hours. I'm going to show them the article if they give me any flack, and I'll post back here.
Update: Verizon's been in touch to inform us of a policy change: customers who purchase the off-contract Xoom will now no longer need to be on a month to month plan. That said, we still see "Month to Month" as a compulsory option at the time of updating this post.

I bought from a VZW corporate store this morning, full price, no activation required. She asked me if I was just using for wifi or if I wanted data, I said wifi and that was it.
I'm in Iraq currently, so i had to get it overnighted to my wife and she has to activate it. I paid the activation fee...then, immediately after it is activated I am calling vzw and placing it on military suspension, and getting the activation fee credited to my account. they don't ship to APO addresses, and it has to be activated over the cell network if you get it subsidized.
hopefully, I can cancel the contract later this year. I've done it on ATT before.

The official statement is from Verizon, and it's my understanding that it's the Verizon booth in Costco that activates the 3g on the device. If someone tells me I must get 3g, I'm going to mention to them the official Verizon stance and ask if they can contact their corporate office to check.

I was afraid of this. Verizon probably has no intention of rushing to get the information out there hoping to still snag some undeserved money.

I am taking my EVO with me. I already have the Engadget page ready to show if they give me an crap about fees. They are a Verizon kiosk (Verizon Representative) and should honor what Verizon is doing. If they are doing it in the Verizon stores, they should do it at their kiosks as well.

I suppose that's okay. The damage is done to my credit since I let Best Buy run it two days ago and Costco yesterday.

UPDATE: Verizon Wireless has changed its mind on this policy as of Thursday morning (thank goodness). I've just confirmed with a Verizon spokesperson that if you purchase the Xoom for $800, without a contract, you will not be required to pay the $35 activation fee or sign up for a data plan. As of now, the Verizon Wireless website is not reflecting this change; however, an online customer service representative tells me you can contact customer care to have the data plan removed after making your purchase.

So the solution is to call customer care. Doing this today will hopefully avoid having to give them a single red cent in prorated data.

At costco they make you sign up for the month to month. He even gave me the number to cancel it. Up front you pay for the device, everything else is billed later. If you cancel within 3 days everything will be good to go.

What's the warranty like. Do you get the Costco 90 day warranty OR the Verizon 14 day warranty? Was there other people there getting the Xoom as well

You have to break your contract within 14 days if you sign a 2 year. You have 90 days to return the device. You have a 1 year manufactur warranty. You have 3 days to cancel and not pay the activation fee. I was the only one
I got mine from VZW and they tried their hardest to get me to activate it for at least one month and charge me an activation fee. I told them I didn't want to do that and that verizon released information saying that it was not necessary. After about a half hour of them constantly asking me they finally sold it to me for full price.

If i read this correctly, as soon as our evos turn 1 year old (assuming you bought on release) you will be eligible for an $150 off upgrade. We all pay $69.99 anyway.

Yes, I did read it and I know it says $69.99. I am saying that the e-mail is wrong and the program changed on April 1.
You can believe that e-mail all you want but it isn't correct.
I think thats his point. Yes the program has changed, but he still got this email.
He wouldn't have made this post otherwise.
I wonder if he could use this to his advantage, probably bit but it would be cool

Well, I still have a $150 discount on all 4 lines (3 evos/1 airave), so I'm not going to complain, except about their ****ty ass 3G speeds!

Can you actually use the airave upgrade though?
They'll just say someone had an incorrect file added to the reply they sent etc. I think you might be able to sweet talk your way into it for this year at least. 2 friends from work went to the local 3rd Party Sprint dealer they like and he was going to reset the upgrade dates for them. I don't know what he does or how he did it, but he did for her cousin/relative earlier that week. I think she said he had a heat ticket created for them both.

You're not supposed to be able to, but people ahve done it. A few peeps on Sprintusers changed that to their primary line once it had a year showing on their account and upgraded phones. Then immediately switched the AirRave back to that line when they got home. I don't know of they have closed this loophole or not, it's not supposed to work that way.

Wirefly shows it as eligible for an upgrade haha.. sort of tempting.
Well it's funny because as soon as they added the Airave line to my account it was eligible.
Hmm, if I can use the $150 upgrade discount on the airave, I'm going too! They won't do crap for me about their 3G speeds. They just say: Okay ...to everything I saw. Mindless robots, I think.
Hmm, Amazon Wireless is saying that the airave line is good for a discount...
Like I said it works and people have done it. But it's not normal protocol, I dunno if they would do anything about it though?
I've successfully used the Airave to grab an Epic last year for my wife. Looked on the web page when it was done and saw that I didn't have an upgrade available for the Airave so I knew it worked.
The funny thing was, in the process of reverting the #s back, Sprint accidentally canceled my Airave rather than switch it. When they put the Airave back onto my account, they reset the upgrade status so it said get $150 off the new phone again.
I'm premier gold now anyways so no problems getting the yearly upgrade but now I have three with me, my wife, and the Airave.
best bet is to keep your evo nice and shiny, sell it on ebay and pay retail for your new phone, im assuming evo 3D. worst case it costs your $100 or so but you dont have to sign a new contract.

How did you go about using the upgrade on your airave line?
My mom recently washed hers and the best option is to just pay retail for one, but if I can use the airave $150, I'll do that for her; our 3 lines still have $150 discounts.
So, if I use the airave line/$150, the contract reups and starts at 2 years again, right? Then...when we use the $150 discounts on the 3 evo lines when the evo 3D comes out, the contract will reup and start at 2 years again, right?

I just walked into Best Buy and told them I wanted to use my Airave number. The reason I did this was when I bought the Evo, I heard the workers saying that yes it was possible to some other customers and that they've done it.
Now, I then headed to a third party Sprint store to had them switch #s back on the same day. The crux of the situation was that you had to wait at least 24 hours to switch back. Well, since my wife had work calls, I tried and do it that same day and it kinda sorta worked out. That was when they cancelled my Airave instead of switching it Weird thing was my Airave still worked for the next few weeks. It was when it stopped working and I saw a $150 extra charge that I called and asked why I had this charge and why the Airave didn't work. They said cause I called and cancelled it and I'm like no, I don't want to cancel I want to switch.
Yes, I think it renews the 2 year agreement of the Airave cause when I did it and went to the website, it didn't have the upgrade a phone for $150.. now it does cause of Sprint's little snafu but I don't need to use it for a while since I have 2 other upgrades
Yes all contracts renew to 2 years if you opt for the full discount.
