[Q] Orange UK - 3G does not work.. - Hero, G2 Touch General

Hi all,
Wonder if you can help me as I'm beginning to lose it with this phone..
I've not had a decent connection since I bought the phone back in september. Basically a 3G signal means no connection. Nothing happens, no data. When its on the 'H' sign it works really well but it stays on H for like 10 seconds before switching back to 3G.
I've googled this problem and it seems I'm not the only one with this issue. I've changed the network settings, and even tried various radios to no avail. I have good 3G coverage in my area so there shouldn't be a problem at all. Even in central london it doesn't work. It's too unstable and virtually unusable..
Can anyone suggest any other possible solutions to this please?
Thanks

Talk to lennyuk about this
He got on well against orange and can tell you the story of what's wrong

I had this problem before! Orange just sent me a new SIM and it was all sorted !

Thanks chaps,
I've just PM'd Lenny!
alex: I'll ring them up and ask them to send me a new one if it still doesn't work. I'm sooo not looking forward to explaining to them what the issue is...haha

Ah, I had this problem, and it left me 4 months without data thanks to oranges stupidity.
Anyway a short term fix will be to dial *#*#4636#*#* and go phone options, then change your network in the drop down box to 2g only (or similar can't remember the phrase it uses)
2g still works all the time.
As for the long fix, you will need to speak to orange and demand to speak to "high tech" support they can fix it (well they did for me eventually). The problem they said was that my phone was connecting to both an old tower and a new "super tower" they orange UK are installing across the country, this confused the phone and messed up its data connection when on 3g, as it was trying to pull data from 2 towers at one time.
Orange eventually forced me onto one tower (or so they told me) and for a large part the problem was solved from there on in.
You do have to remember as well though the Hero has some 3g compatibility issues with Orange's existing network (again stupid orange), this is something that can never really be fixed.
Orange support can be very helpful if you speak to the right people, don't be afraid to tell them to put you through higher up straight away.
Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for the informative reply Lenny
I'll keep you all updated.

Just a quick update..
I had 2 weeks of stable connection up until a few days back! It had been fine ever since Orange fixed the 3g/gprs problem after it went down for everyone. Probably due to the low traffic? (see below)
So I phoned Orange yesterday and explained my problem and asked to be put through to the 'high tech' department. However, after a while being on hold, the 1st line support advisor said she'll call me back asap as the techies were busy. She called back about 20min later, just as I popped downstairs for 30 seconds! Anyway, she left a message explaining the problem. Turns out that my area has 2 masts both of which are running at full capacity, and there's not enough bandwidth for everyone, hence why my connection has been unstable. She also said that they're going to be upgrading the capacity on the 18th which should fix it.
Another thing she mentioned was that, next month when orange and tmobile merge there's going to be more masts for our phones to connect to - more coverage and bandwidth. You can sign-up to trial this on the orange website.

Phone connection dropping

My P3600 phone goes insane sometimes, and will not dial out (hangs up immediately after dialing without ringing), or hangs up within 5s of me answering. Does this happen to anyone else, and if it does, what do you change to fix it?
jchap2k
Same here...
I don't know why this happens...
Me also
Running the new HTC official ROM, I noticed it first with the upgrade, I make a call like voicemail from the attention prompt and I put the phone to my head and the call is ended after like 5 sec. I though at first my ear was hitting end but tried it without moving the phone anywhere and it still will randomly end calls right after I try to make them... tried disabling smart dialing and that seemed to work at first but I could have just been lucky because it didn't keep working... anyone else besides us three?
I also lose calls or conversations break in the middle. I went to HTC service and thet recommended me to change the SIM with a newer one. I did that today and I only lost one call so far (but I was sending an MMS while talking to a customer service rep so it might be related to that). If things improve I will let you know.
Mihaig, any news about your SIM change as connection dropping solution ?

I tried turning off UMTS (using only edge), and so far I have not had any dropped calls/immediate hang ups. Would getting a new SIMs card allow me to turn back on the UMTS bands?
I did have a sim card go bad that had to be replaced. The phone wasnt dropping any calls, then all of a sudden just couldnt find the network. My new card has dropped a lot of calls lately.
But i'm not too worried, my service provider thinks its there network fault and I the complete call is free as long as I phone the person back.
Anybody have a 'settings' solution, I would be very interested.

Well, so far no more dropped calls after turning off UMTS. I wonder if a new SIMs card would help in this matter. (mine is only 1 year old though).
Only with Car Bluetooth
There are some gaps in the conversations when I use the Nokia Carset bluetooth but with the P3600 itself no problems so far (just 1.5 week old). I do have some problems with the SD card, ones two days the info is corrupted and I need to format the SD card.
As far as I have found out, the problem has to do with 3G, the 3G hasn't got coverage everywhere ( at least here in DK ) and when the phone switches, it sometimes lose connection for a couple of seconds. Switching off the umts did the trick for me, no more hang-ups or lost connex, but then again, no more video-calls or streaming, so it's a choice... :/
Hope the next update will fix this, if there is a next one... P

There is a known problem with many service providers and HSDPA. If you have the phone on automatic while in 3G mode, when your phone connects to data the phone will switch to HSDPA just for the data transmission (if your provider supports it), during the transmission calls are not received and usually sent to voicemail. This doesn't happen with all providers, but it does with many of them. You can turn off just the HSDPA and not the 3G with this tweak program http://www.fit4cat.de/thread.php?threadid=263. On my phone I have no problems with normal 3G, it is just HSDPA that is the problem.
Hmm, I already tried that program but I still had the same problem even after turning off the HSDPA only. It never happens when UMTS is off completely though. I figure when I want to use the internet I will turn UMTS back on and when I just need it as a phone I can turn it off.
Sorry folks, dumb question: where can I turn off UMTS in my trinity and only have EDGE enabled?
Thanks for your help...
mfg OK
Press the green button to start the phone, then Menu/Options. Select the 'Band' tab and change the upper box to GSM.
Leave the lower box at 'Auto'

I replaced with a new Cingular/ATT 3G sim and still the same problem... I'm going to also try to turn off UMTS to see if this fixes it... mostly I notice when calling voicemail from the notification tab... Oh yeah, it now says ATT as my service...
I have this problem, on the Orange and T-Mobile network, with WM5, and WM6. Have the latest radio, the works.
Bit of a joke that this happens to be honest.. a phone that has 3G/UMTS but that won't allow a certain number of calls when it switches. Pretty fundemental flaw if you ask me!
I've set band to GSM, let's see if it fixes the problem. Will download the aforementioned hack this evening.
Ah, I see it's the operators problem, not the phone's. Flipping amateur of orange not rectify this before shipping..
I've used HTweakC to disable HPSABCD(sic) and will see if the problem stops.
Not a SIMcard problem
HI Guys!
I work in a Mobilephoneshop for a Network Provider, and i had the same problem.
The first trinity that arrived in the shop was mine
And this little bas... droped many calls.
I talked with the tecnics from my prov. first we changed the sim, but same problem. Reflashed Rom same problem.
It has something to do with teh HSDPA, evrytime my trinity connectet them, the calls was dropped, the bad thing was, we have a HSDPA antenna in teh shop
Only the change of the devise worked.
Hope was helpfull and sorry 4 my bad english!

See above, use HTweakC to disable HSDPA, but leave 3G enabled.

T-Mobile UK problems

Is anybody else having connection problems with T-Mobile today? I've had no reception for hours and my friends are experiencing the same issue. We're all in Glasgow so I wonder if it's a local problem or not.
When i scan for networks i get "your sim card does not allow connections to this network" when i choose t-mobile.
My friends have their reception back and i have only had it back once in the past few hours until i started getting the error again.
Bill has been paid etc so im not banned or anything.
Got connected with the 'Use only 2G' option. Have read on other forums that T-Mobile's 3G servers are having trouble today.
This sucks!
This happens all the time mate.
I'm in Greenock near the T-Mobile building with the big 3G transmitter, makes no difference, sometimes it just goes tits-up and only way make communication is to switch to 2G.
pain in the arse.
Had the same sort of issues as well, thought it was localised to the transmitter closest to me as it happened a few months ago and took T-Mo around a month to fix. Seems to be working OK now, though
just as a tip, you may want to consider using Twitter to search for any outages with your network provider.
i'm on O2, and live in an area where i'll get a decent connection in one room while getting a bad connection in another (usually my bedroom!)
When I get connection issues, I use Twitter to see if it's a UK-wide issue, or if it's just problem in my local area. I find it to be more informative in this situation than any kind of forum, since it's about as real-time as you can get.
And the best thing is, you don't even need an account to use the search! http://search.twitter.com

Rogers 3G network

Hey guys, I just wanted to see if anyone else is having a longer waiting period with the Rogers 3G network lately or if it is just me. I've been noticing that my phone has slowed down quite a bit when browsing the internet or using an application that requires data on the 3G network. My wi-fi is fine, just the 3G. It takes between 45 secs to 1 minute to retreive the information. I had called Rogers and asked them to reset or refresh or whatever they do down there, but didn't seem to help.
Now if it is just my phone, maybe it is some application that is using up the processor or data, but I don't have that many applications running in the background other than weatherbug that constantly uses data.
Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks
What happens if you run a speedtest? the app by Xtremelabs is good.
no issue here. i use mine on a daily basis between pickering and mississauga, and as long as i have at least 2 bars of signal strength my magic is very fast over 3g
Thanks guys for the quick response. I think I found the problem. I had called Rogers support again and they said that it is due to my sim card being a 2G one. I need to replace it with a 3G. Hopefully that will fix the problem.
Thanks
I too have been having internet/email issues since last Thursday using my Treo 750. The symbol toggles between 3G and H and usually does nothing but comes back with an error message saying something like 'cannot find this page...'. I travel between Oakville and Concord every day with the same issues. The phone worked perfectly in Brantford last night...so I don't think it's a hardware issue. The tech support guy grabbed a treo and tried and was able to connect on EDGE....not 3G.
I tried my sim card in my sons Motorola Risr and it works perfectly....on EDGE. They tech support guy said they were having issues with 3G last Thurs/Friday, so I'm wondering if whatever they did last week is affecting some older phone models (I've had mine for 1 1/2 years now). Not sure if I can (or if I want to) configure my treo to connect via EDGE instead of 3G...
Anyone having the same problem?
Very odd indeed. I got my new sim card but still doesn't fix my problem. At least I'm not the only one experiencing the same problem. As far as I know, the 3G and H symbol are he same thing according to rogers tech guy, correct me if I am wrong. I'm going to call again today to see if I come up with anything.
Just got off the phone with Tech Support again. They are sending me a new Sim Card, but from the sounds of it, that's probably not going to fix the problem. He WAS going to do a free hardware swap until he discovered the phone is out of warranty. Then it was basically "oh gee, three year contract, one year warranty...tough luck".
Yep, the G and H are the same thing. Since mine is switching back and forth, he said the phone is hunting for a signal.
When I asked why the phone worked perfectly in another city he couldn't give me a good answer. I have to go back to Brantford tonight, so I'll get a chance to repeat the experiment.
Listen folks. It has nothing to do with your SIM card, nor your phone. The reps at rogers, I for one, ASSUME it could be the sim card, but really, most of the reps cannot differentiate an incompatible SIM with a compatible one, so they send you out a new one anyways, just to get you off the phone because they really don't know what the cause is and they have no hands on the status of the networks and network problems other than what is posted in library by the actual IT department, which do not directly communicate with the centers.
To sum it up. Rogers 3G network is garbage! and that DNS issue is not isolated to the metro area, it's here too in Newfoundland. DNS resolution is extremely slow, even with OpenDNS, which means it's their switches that are garbage and most likely being bogged down. Rogers thinks they had solved the problem by throttling the 3G bandwidth to ~3Mbit and the upstream to less than 150K, (My assumption), however, that isn't working.
From my guess is that the request is sent to Rogers networks, which cache that request then caches the pages and sends it to your device, making it appear you have a fast connection.
Anyways, sometimes I find the EDGE network a lot faster..especially in the DNS resolution area.
"It has nothing to do with your SIM card, nor your phone"
My feeling exactly. It just seems a little too coincidental that everything was just fine until they had a network "issue" late last week.
So, being a mechanical guy with very little knowledge of how a these things actually work, is there a way for me force the treo750 to use the EDGE network?
Never mind, I got a hold of a guy at Rogers who seemed to know his stuff. He told me to get the latest OS from Palm and then how to go in and set it up for EDGE. We'll see how that works.

I love ripping on Rogers for being crap, they are, but the network is downtown Toronto is far from crap. And it is not throttled. I have had repeated speedtests reach 3900kb/s with the average around 3100kb/s. Thats not too bad considering the crap they put up with in the states on AT&T.

True, compared to the 3G in the U.S I would agree that Rogers has an edge, 3G here in Newfoundland is still in it's infancy, well still is everywhere. We just got 3G last winter I believe.

HTC Hero on Three...

Hello all,
Is anyone using the HTC Hero on Three in the UK?
I am seeing issues with my Google synchronising - it just won't. However, if I put in a T-Mobile SIM, all is well...
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks,
Simon
Yeah I am on three UK network. Haven't experienced any problems syncing/internet/msn.
Are you getting the "H" symbol at the top? Any particular error message coming up? I don't think the address book syncs straight away - might have to give it a few moments, but you can make it sync now by going to
Setting > Data Sync > Google, then press the menu button and choose sync now.
no probs here either
only sync mail with google though
do my contacts with microsoft exchange
Thanks for the quick responses - good to hear that it _should_ be working...
Basically, if I work with my T-Mobile SIM I am able to run the Google account setup and everything is OK; when I tried it last night with my Three SIM, I got errors like 'unable to connect' and 'the data connection is not very reliable'. I was able to connect to Facebook though (I didn't try anything else, just those two).
Today, having successfully setup Google with my T-Mobile (I was able to see my mail, for example), when I switch back to Three I get a notification that says "Sign-in / sync error" and when I tap it I'm asked to re-enter my password... even though it just authenticated with the T-Mobile SIM!
Any ideas... would really appreciate it,
Simon
when you change SIMs, it will indeed ask you to re-enter your password, that is normal. generally cos it tries to connect before it updates the APN and so it fails to connect.
As for the unreliable connection error, that is also normal if you set up google after skipping it in the initial set up of the device. there's threads about that already.
can confirm here that had no problems on three, everything worked correctly over the three.co.uk APN and also over the 3internet APN.
Coolio - seems to be OK now I've re-entered the password... guess that's a security thing.
Sorry to trouble you all, but I really appreciate your assistance!
Back to playing with the new toy...

Funny that I have the same problem too !
Have also noticed that the phone doesn't Rome to Orange ? My diamond always romed to Orange but for some reason my hero won't even though its a white unlocked one , funny because I thought 3 had a deal with Orange for roaming so I think this is y my signal is now crap at home ?

Awsome phone though reception could be better. Hope a radio update comes and fixes this.
Also, could someone publish the APN settings they are using. I thought I had googled them correctly, but connection seems a little hit and miss at times. Also MMS is still failing.
I noticed rhedgehog mentioned 2 lots of settings ?
three.co.uk APN and also over the 3internet APN

roaming in rome?
Just noticed something interesting.
Now have 2 Hero phones (wife liked it so had to get her one...). One was locked to T-Mobile the other to Orange.
Both are now unlocked and have three sims in them.
But I've noticed that I don't get the Roaming etc. problems with the Orange branded one like I do with the TMobile one.
Tried swapping my sims over, but same result.
I reckon the 'Roaming' thing is related to TMobile branded units.
Anyone else finding the same ?
That would suggest picking a good ROM and updating should resolve it...
Thanks,
Zuber
Good news (just in case anyone is intersted...)
Just updated to latest radio and ROM from MoDaCo.
Major result.
You need to wipe clean the device as part of the process.
But
Roaming seems to have disappeared. Now get a nice H and lots of signal bars.
Also, did not need to configure my 3 settings for intenet and MMS. Picked them up automatically.
Not played with the ROM itself or anything. But feedback from others seems to be good.
Regommended for 3 users. Will probably do the same to my wife's orange phone. Though the Orange Radio does not keep daying Roaming like my TMobile one did.
Hope that is of help to someone.

A little while ago, 3 signed a far reaching 3G network sharing agreement with T-Mobile - in essence, the 3G assets for both networks got spun off into a separate company with 3 and T-Mobile owning 50% each. However, as far as I'm aware they are still roaming on Orange 2G when 3G is not available.
Regards,
Dave
I think the 3 having a poor signal thing was a red herring (for my issues anyway). It looks like it had something to do with the TMobile Radio software.
Since doing a ROM/Radio update (see my last post), the signal is much better, shows a H for data and is not 'Roaming'.
I'm happy with Three...
By the way, if any of you guys tend to want the Hero more for the internet and texting rather than calls (as in light use rather than no use). I seriously recommend the Three Flat 12 PAYG plan as it stands at the moment.
Three are no longer offering it, but you can still get a pack online from stores (I got it from expansys £20 inc £30 credit).
As far as I can tell, Each top up gets you 150MB data to be used within 90 days.
So 2 x £5 topup gets you 300MB (2 x 150) allowance and 50 texts (2 x 25)
OR
1 x £10 topup gets you 150MB allowance and 600 texts.
Choose your poison...
I tend to use the work phone for making the occasional call

No data whilst using 3G

I have an issue with my handset that I've just noticed. When browsing the internet over 3G my data stalls. The browser sits and waits for the connection to change to HSDPA "H". This can take upto 30 seconds. The page then loads and the connection changes back to 3G, starting the whole process again.
I have an unlocked, SIM free handset on Orange UK.
I had this issue on my Hero, and there was a fix issued with the 2.1 update.
Am I alone with this issue?
Sent from my Desire HD
Got the same issue here, I'm on an 18 month contract but got the handset through Phones4u.
Just trying to find out what the problem is as apparently my APN is fine... gonna try a factory reset and reset my APN and if still having the same problem gonna get onto P4U...
Anyone else got any ideas?

I think this could be an issue with Orange and Froyo - I had the same thing with my hero on Orange. My DHD is on T-mobile and works better - although there is still an issue with t-mob capping HSDPA to 0.35Mbps but thats another story
I hope if it is, they resolve it soon! I know that orange haven't released the DHD themselves yet... but they should be doing it soon and they've got support guides for it online.
I've just switched from T-Mob as I could get more mins on Orange and figured that as they're merging their 3G signal from next year... and I can get Orange Wednesdays easier this way haha.
Just going to do the factory reset now... if that doesn't improve things I'll get onto P4U and Orange...
I don't think it's a carrier problem...
Same issue for me too...
Over the weekend I had no data throughput even though it showed 3G or H. I called Orange and they had an answer machine message saying they were aware of a data issue and were working on it.
It's been better yesterday, but still slightly intermittent.
Good to know that they've shared this with Phones4u haha. They're going to send me a replacement phone... but if it is a known issue I might just hang on save messing around as the handset is otherwise perfect...
I've got the same problem, i'm with Vodafone Australia, seems as though there is a very long pause while the phone switches between 3g and HSDPA and while it's on 3g it does nothing or is very slow. This is seriously annoying and i've been searching for a solution for days. I had come to the conclusion that maybe the HSDPA signal is weak or something and have been searching for a solution to turn HSDPA off as i've had other phones where browsing on 3g only has been sufficiently fast.
any updates on this ? xtommox has the new phone solved it ?
