[Q] Google Maps and Navigation - Streak 5 General

Hi guys I have a question, does the google maps on your Streak have built in launcher to google navigation or is navigation a stand alone app?
For example if you search an address in google maps does it give you the option for both directions and navigation? or just directions?
Because I bought a Streak used, and the latter seems to be the case for me.
Thanks.

I do not have my streak on me at present but i am sure its the latter

stand alone app in launcher bud

Oh, I see, geez that sucks. Oh well, I hope 2.2 update brings lots of needed changes. I love the 5 inch screen, but really thats not enough.

It should be able to do both. When in google maps, hit menu, directions, choose a place hit go and screen will show up with directions and also "show on map" or "navigate"options to click on.
or you can use just the navigation app.

Google maps does have an icon which when you click will take you to a screen where you get options for navigation like voice, past trips etc. you can also place regular trips as icons on desktop

Agreed, navigation is an option on current google maps.

I have the navigation icon also.. remember that google maps will not update itself unless you visit market and install the latest version from there first..

The navigation button is enabled in google maps labs. It becomes an option on your icon along with call the icon.
Great if you are searching for a place you can just click navigate to get to it.
Also when directions are invoked in google maps it gives you the option, to use the normal map directions or navigation
The google labs options are good. It has layers button, measure tool etc

Thanks for the update. I pulled the battery and now it seems to work fine. Maybe i was installing and uninstall too many apps from the market?? Not sure but in any case its working now.

Mine was missing too. However, once I updated Google Maps, and rebooted the phone, there it was!

And it kicks ass btw!
sorry for my ignorance, but what is google navigation and how do you reboot the phone?
go into the market application search for google maps, or just hit menu, downloads.. you will see theres an update. Update it. Then go into the launcher (applications menu) and search for navigation. Have fun. Its turn by turn directions from google maps, and acts pretty much just like a real car GPS.

It's like having a GPS receiver. If you've ever used VZ Navigator for Verizon or anything like that. It basically gives you turn-by-turn directions without having to pay for it. Pretty nice feature IMO. O yeah and it's free.
O yeah and rebooting your phone all you do is hold down the top home key for a while and it will launch a screen that asks you if you want to power off or reboot.
thanks for the quick response. I will try out the navigation app. Now I pressed the home key and it only has options for power off the phone. oh well maybe if i power off and on the phone it's the same as rebooting.
take a look at your manual, the home key has a little home on it. Either way that has nothing to do with what you need to do, you need to go to your application market and find google maps and update it, no reboot should be necessary
yeah correct once i updated the google maps, navigation have updated it

Google navigation not available in Australia

Car Menu and Google Maps Navigation. When you are out and about, Galaxy S makes finding your way around fun, easy and efficient. In the car, put Galaxy S into its mount, and weather, view map, voice search and navigation icons are instantly displayed. The Google Maps Navigation application allows you to find your destination easily and quickly even through the most complex streets. As you make your way, Galaxy’s internet-connected navigation with voice command and preinstalled Google Maps, provides three different views. Real street view, traffic view and satellite view.

Am I the only person who gets "Navigation is not available in your area" when I load the navigation app? Samsung are selling the phone with navigation as a feature, one I intended to use which is disabled because?
I was under the impression that Google Navigation was only available in the US as of right now.

Its works in Canada.. Google Navigation has been working in Canada for about a year now.

There's no google Nav in aus yet as mentioned. Brut[maps] works, but be aware there are still some small subtle oddities (which don't really affect it's use), such as going the wrong way around on roundabouts (So if it says second exit, that might mean second exit counterclockwise, NOT the correct way).

Please tell Google to make search bar in Maps an option

How many people are aware Google has a place where you can submit bugs / feature requests and people can "star" them to help Google rank the issues?
To that end, please go to code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=11176 and press the star in the top left corner to let Google know users should have the ability to turn the search bar in Maps on and off as an option. I refuse to update the app until this feature is added.
Then go to the list and star your other favorite topics. Let Google know what you think!
Thanks!

No he means in the recent update there is a search bar that cant be removed at the top, he wants google to make that bar optional so he can get a full map
I second this I wasn't really happy with a huge bar in my maps.
Oh. Just download Brut maps 16

I've stuck with the previous version of maps because of this issue...I'll never understand why some Google programmer decided it was a good idea to force the search bar...and apparently his fellow programmers agreed with him. Makes you wonder if these guys actually use their software.
Google makes their money by....... search and placing ads withing the results and it´s not like the search bar takes up half the screen.
I prefer this search bar over those in-app-ads that most free programs use.
I agree that I've like the search bar to be removable, but I'm not going to star your bug, because its in the wrong place and thus has minimal chance of being seen by anyone who cares.
Gmail/Maps/Market are closed-source apps and should be commented on in the google mobile forums. The AOSP bug-tracker will only track bugs in code that is part of AOSP, I.E. not Google Maps.

[Q] Navigation Apps for Acer ICONIA A500

I've tested some offline navigation apps...
What are your experience?
These are my new results (2011-09-27):
OK: iGo is running in small resolution 800 x 360, GPS o.k.
OK: CoPILOT life is running in full screen resolution (but it is not very stable, when sounds are enabled) GPS o.k., no TTS on A500!
OK: Sygic 11.2 is running in full screen, with GPS o.k. and TTS!
Not OK: Navigon select 3.6 or older is not running, because the Acer has no IMEI No.
OK: Navigon 3.6 is running, but no menu functions are reachable.
i have copilot working.... but that was "annoying" to say the least.
it was constantly freezing during downloading of the maps (somehow my $4.99 US map purchase gave me access to the $19.99 mapset for north america, so that's a plus)
after disabling the startup sounds, the annoying button feedback sounds, and using the text to speech voice option, it seems to be more stable.
I use Navigation. Just cache the area - I have quite a bit of the state cached and have been using it pretty reliably.
Though an offline navigation app would be ideal, at least Navigation is stable.

Sheer persistance...
When starting up, I took it SLOW...no quickly tapping on options or flying though menus. No multitasking either. When it's downloading maps, I just let it be.
This was all after a few hours of trying

Basically navigate around when connected to WIFI. Navigation will stream the info from Goolge maps and cache the tiles it loads. I'm sure there is a limit to how much it can cache but, for the most part, it works.
Just be aware that there are several levels of tiles - zoomed in, zoomed out. If you cache zoomed out tiles, it doesn't necessarily mean when you zoom in, the info will be available (when not connected to WIFI and being solely dependent on cached data) so cache zoomed in tiles. The ones that have all the side street names showing.
cache google nav
to cache the local maps on google nav.open maps not nav go into the setting at the top right of the screen in the drop down.will be cache settings.I also noticed if you are offline and trying to use nav.Open maps first hit the my location icon. when it finds you .hot the settings then directions then n

Google map and native navigation app

Is there any way to start copilot or Tom Tom instead of Google navigation when use Google map?
I don't think so. I can't see anyway you could do that.
I remember few years ago there was a button you could just click and run any navi app installed. Weird. It is almost like an apple now- forcing to use Google everywhere.
