[Lag Fix] The NEW Lagfix Thread! (IT WORKS) - Captivate Android Development

HOW THIS WORKS (Stolen from RyanZA)
Creates a VIRTUAL EXT2 or 4 filesystem inside the stock RFS filesystem on the internal SD card, with a 4KB block size. This means that this lag fix creates a buffer between the real filesystem and the android system. This buffer should reduce the amount of disk I/O required for all operations by utilizing EXT2 buffering, as well as not writing file access times to disk, etc.
Since the inception of this concept there have been a few different versions of the Lagfix, I'll describe them a bit below:
Tayutama's Update.zip method (recommended)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765820
- Tested extensively, this new version actually does all of the file movement while the phone is still booting so the chances of your data and apps disappearing, or corrupting is massively diminished. This Lagfix can be applied in both EXT2 and EXT4 flavors and both perform amazingly! This fix also corrects the Captivate gps logging problem! Make sure you install the "with root" version if you aren't rooted, and the "without root" version if you are or the fix may fail! DO NOT INSTALL USING ROM MANAGER!
Is EXT2 for me?
If you want your Quadrant scores to be bloated beyond belief and don't care if your data spontaneously combusts (Results may vary). Alternatively if you're worried about your NAND wear leveling not being able to handle the strain of EXT4 journaling.
Okay EXT2 is scary, how about EXT4?
You can't afford for your things to get corrupted? Weirdo. Real world performance between EXT4 and EXT2 is barely noticeable if at all, for the everyman this is probably your best bet.
The RyanZA Oneclick Lag Fix APK
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=760571
This fix is marketed to people who aren't comfortable with scripting! It's not designed to compete directly with the other lag fixes out there, but if you're a self proclaimed "noob" this is probably the route for you!
The RyanZA Oneclick Lag Fix V2-3
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=751864
This is the lag fix that a lot of you will be coming from if you have one already (Exceptions would be SRE users) and the origin of most of the lag fixes used currently. This lag fix is mostly the same as Tayutama's new version with three exceptions: A) EXT2 is the only supported file system B) EXT data file is created and data is moved while the OS is running so it's a tad riskier C) It moves the data from /data/app into the virtual FS.
GENERAL THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
PEOPLE WHO ARE USING JH2 OR JH3 AND A MARKET FIX THAT SPOOFS YOUR BUILD.PROP TO JF6 SHOULD MANUALLY DISABLE GPS LOGGING!! IF YOU DO NOT YOUR PHONE WILL FILL UP WITH LOGS AND DISABLE APP INSTALLS/SMS
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7650658&postcount=312
As with anything on XDA there's a chance things you do here could harm your device, whether or not creating a file system within RFS will cause your hardware to die prematurely is up for debate, it's suggested that you educate yourself on what you're doing to your hardware before you do it!
Most fixes of any kind will perform best from a clean odin flash, though the most recent release of Tayutama's fixed is targeted at the audience who has a ton of apps installed it comes with NO GUARANTEES, myself and other users have spent a good amount of time testing out different revisions of these scripts to decrease the likelihood of cataclysmic data loss, but your mileage may vary.
If you have any questions or anything feel free to post in this thread, we'll do our best to help you along!

Thanks to ykk_five for being brave enough to goof with the file system enough to figure out the loop trick in the first place!
Thanks to RyanZA for coming up with the initial fix that stuck past reboot and his continual development for the SGS
Thanks to Tayutama for his tireless dedication to making sure this fix works as best it can, even with all the Captivate specific curveballs
Many thanks as well to the people besides myself who have been brave enough to load these experimental builds onto their phones (A moment of silence for all the apps who lost their lives in the pursuit of a snappier SGS)

How about the kernel based lag fix that you can use with an external card? Is that method no longer recommended?

I'm assuming design is incorporating this into super duper user infinite? I really like how fluid things are on my cappy since running the last lag fix. Thanks for all the good work

You can still run that one if you're satisfied with it Though I've found this to be a bit faster due to the buffering.
The other side of this is that it can function with a stock kernel with no flashing required but it *does* use your internal storage- so if you're afraid of that then keep on truckin with the external method

Our Devs are so fun.

So I just flashed a JH3 using Odin and everything is great.
So I download Tayutama's 2.3.1 lagfix. Flashed it successfully.
But when I try to run SL4A and Run the LagFix_Ext2.sh I get an error:
"The application SL4A has stopped unexpectedly. and i have to force close it.
Any suggestions?

Yeah we're actually working on that one right now... it was working fine yesterday but somewhere along the line some of the refinements managed to mess things up.
I'm on a fresh JH3 right now trying to figure it out too!

I've tried both versions of SL4A, and I've tried some scripts from yesterdays test version and they're both giving the same errors- I even installed spare parts and the development tools that you removed between yesterday and today

[Q] got new vibrant update worked fine, should i?

Ok, after the last tmo/samsung update bricked my vibrant i got my replacement left it stock and let it update. it worked fine. Question is, should I root, incase they send another update i cannot refuse and it bricks my phone again. It's just that the lag fix makes it twice as fast. But i don't like bricked phones.

well, i'm a noob with this. any tuts on all that? I figured out how to use odin to flash diff roms on my phone and had no issues. but all that Idk. yes I know I can prolly search for all of it, but that took me hours last time. any help would be awesome. thanks.

It's easy once you read and understand. And i'm almost certain you could've fixed your last 'bricked' phone if you searched.
I searched. the first was a soft brick sticking at vibrant logo. I fixed it, but I didn't have a stock backup i flashed, it was a "stock rom" i found on here somewhere. But when it bricked the second time it wouldn't power up, no battery on screen when charging, nothing. But, I will give it a go this way and see what happens, I have 2 now, so eh. It's fun, but I am jsut getting into it. like I flashed it with one of the froyo roms, but the sound wouldn't work for nothing, i searched and no one else using that rom had that problem that i could find. So i know there was something i didn't do. I just wanna makesure i can get it back to stock if i need to.

Ok, so I did all that you mentioned seemed to work fine, but this fusion rom doesn't seem like much. now don't flame yet, i am just talkin. but it doesn't look like it changed much other than add launcher pro and as for lag. it's not as slow as stock but with ryans lag fix my quadrant score was 2550 and i'm getting 950 on this. although i have to say the gps snapped to lock. that was great.i really like the froyo rom i flashed before if i could have figured our how come my sound wasn't working and everyone else did not have that issue.

There are a few options available on TeamWhiskey website:
1. Fusion with stock kernel
2. Fusion with JAC kernel
3. Fusion with KK kernel
All of the above do not include any lagfixes, except a manual invocation via ADB for RyanZA's equivalent, a.k.a mount /data on a virtual EXT2 partition.
Optionally you can load Voodoo EXT4 based lagfix on non stock kernel options.
Another project is underway with TW own overclocked kernel and z4mod.
And as far as not much, compare the system resource utilization on stock Vibrant and on Vibrant with Fusion (with stock kernel option) - the guys over at TW have squeezed as much as possible out of TouchWiz to make the phone snappier, and as an added bonus they have removed most of the bloatware for you as well leaving the Media Hub for those who might wanna use it.

[Kernel] 12/27/10 Reoriented for CyanogenMod 6.1 Beta 3.5

12/27 Update - A few minor changes in the initramfs, also updated to JPX source and fixed charge death. A single kernel is provided now that charge death has been fixed. By default, max. clock speed will be 1200MHz. To limit this, use setCPU or xan's app. To set the undervolt use the version of xan's app on my other kernel thread. Either flash the kernel with Odin, or extract the zImage and use Heimdall or Neldar's kernel flashing app.
This is a kernel to give the proper screen orientation, home/back button, and headphone/speaker logic, wired headset support, and backlight notification on the Captivate while using Aery's CyanogenMod 6.1 ROM. Look to the left of your screen, now back to me. See how I don't have a donate button? That's because all of the developers involved with this deserve any donations so much more than I do. I support the kernel hackers who really make our phones awesome, I hope you do too.
Note: The OC/UV kernels will, by default, have a max CPU frequency of 1.2GHz. If you don't want to overclock flash a non oc-uv kernel or install xan's UV app which can limit the max clock to 1GHz (or install setCPU). [̶B̶]̶A̶l̶s̶o̶[̶/̶B̶]̶,̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶o̶c̶-̶u̶v̶ ̶k̶e̶r̶n̶e̶l̶s̶ ̶h̶a̶v̶e̶ ̶a̶ ̶t̶e̶n̶d̶e̶n̶c̶y̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶c̶r̶a̶s̶h̶ ̶w̶h̶e̶n̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶ ̶l̶e̶a̶v̶e̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶m̶ ̶p̶l̶u̶g̶g̶e̶d̶ ̶i̶n̶ ̶w̶e̶l̶l̶ ̶p̶a̶s̶t̶ ̶a̶ ̶f̶u̶l̶l̶ ̶c̶h̶a̶r̶g̶e̶.̶ FIXED
12-8 - More fixes. Backlights work, but you have to toggle them on each reboot it seems, ie, use the app to turn them off then on, and then they work. I'll let neldar know about this. Y̶o̶u̶ ̶a̶l̶s̶o̶ ̶n̶e̶e̶d̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶p̶u̶s̶h̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶l̶i̶b̶l̶i̶g̶h̶t̶s̶.̶5̶p̶c̶1̶1̶0̶.̶s̶o̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶/̶s̶y̶s̶t̶e̶m̶/̶l̶i̶b̶/̶h̶w̶/̶.̶ ̶ ̶M̶a̶y̶b̶e̶ ̶s̶o̶m̶e̶ ̶k̶i̶n̶d̶ ̶u̶s̶e̶r̶ ̶w̶a̶n̶t̶s̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶m̶a̶k̶e̶ ̶a̶ ̶z̶i̶p̶ ̶f̶o̶r̶ ̶e̶v̶e̶r̶y̶o̶n̶e̶?̶ (thanks wi|son, I don't care what the people of Gamehendge say about you, you're not so bad.) I patched in Xcaliburinhand's wired headset support. What a job by that guy, btw. Mad props to him. Buy the guy a beer would ya?
12-5 - Lots of fixes. Wired and wireless tethering working with JK3. It's late and I don't feel like making flashable zips, so do it yourself or nut up and Odin flash the tars I'm posting. (There were some pre-made zips posted a couple weeks ago, look around if you're that lazy . If upgrading to the nightly, you probably want to install Superuser.
11/29 - Mount fixed, superuser working properly, wifi connection fixed, no adb needed for either. Beta 2 build available in Aery's thread. Added a no OC/UV kernel for people having issues with it.
11//28 - Beta 1 release. Support for both SD cards, Wifi* & GPS fixed. Flashing zImage (kernel) from recovery is now supported.
As of this release, to get wifi working you must do the following: No longer relevant
Code:
adb shell
cp /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf /data/wifi/bcm_supp.conf
chown -R wifi:wifi /data/wifi
And to fix su (superuser.apk) No longer relevant
Code:
mount -o remount,rw,noatime,nodiratime,noauto_da_alloc /dev/block/stl9 /system
11/21 - Kernel updates include support for both SD cards. The headphone out jack is now functional as well with the 1120A build. For the moment WiFi appears to be broken with this kernel, so pick your poison, ie, functional wifi and one SD card or no wifi and both SD cards.
11/16 - Initial Beta0 release reoriented kernel.
Read Aery's instructions on how to install CyanogenMod 6.1 here.. Note/system will be ext4 when you flash this, so the process of going back to other ROMs isn't as easy as it was before, but certainly not impossible, so look at the current issues before flashing. Reverting is pretty easy if you leave the update.zip for rooting on your SD card and Odin One Click back to stock. You might be able to flash a Voodoo 5 kernel, reboot to recovery and go from there, but this HAS NOT BEEN TESTED. After reading Aery's instructions (twice) if you're NOT upgrading a previous CM6.1 release, start by Odin flashing the tar file Aery has posted or flash the cm61-b1-sgs-initkernel.zip I have posted here in Clockwork recovery, reboot into Clockwork recovery, then flash CM6.1-GalaxyS-BETA1.zip, reboot to recovery then flash the most recent kernel above and the Google apps.
This is still very beta. A lot of things aren't perfect. I'm not really a developer, I just made this so I could use CyanogenMod a little bit better on my phone, and I thought I'd share it.
Again, all the credit for the ROM starts with Aery, and coolya, and probably a few others I'm not aware of and ends with Cyanogen. They put a lot of work into this, I'd suggest buying them a beer (I know I did). I also want to give a shout out to xcaliburinhand for posting his code on git and getting these problems fixed in the first place, as well as raspdeep for his excellent OC/UV work, and hardcore for some of the other mods.
I'll be updating this kernel as fixes become available.
What's included:
Hardcore's memory & jhash tweaks
Supercurio's color
Raspdeep's OC/UV
Coming up:
Other nonspecific items that I'll later include for Optimal Placebo Effect

[ROM]CyanogenMod (CM6.1-GalaxyS-B20101120A-Captivate)

First off, this is VERY early beta, nightly build test stuff...
There are many bugs, gps doesn't work.
Thanks to Cyanogen and team.
Thanks to Aery for the compiled build.
Thanks to glitterballs for the kernel.
I take not credit for this, except putting it together in a single flashable zip for you guys.
If you don't know what CyanogenMod is, you should probably sell your android device and get an iPhone
This is flashable thru clockworkmod / rom manager.
Flash Cognition first, enable voodoo, boot up completely, then flash this.
Have fun guys...

Nice work DG! As eugene says, community = progress.
Ehh...just thought I'd ask, but you didn't just drop the kernel into a zip right? There is a step where /data /dbdata etc are converted from RFS to ext4 right?

Look around man, there have to be at least a half dozen i9000 ROMs where people are successfully using the 850 band. If I recall you had to enable it on JI6 or maybe it was JG8. I only had to do it once and it was...a month or so ago by now.
This seems super snappy! But, why is there no Market app?
Also FYI, after first boot it would not recognize my external SD card until I ejected it and replaced it.

Before the Best Stock 2.2 froyo rom gets lost...

For last 4 days I am using ZSJPE with Speedmod K10I
This is after having used JPO, DDJPA with all sorts of combinations.
Just as I was expecting that this is going to be a hit JPU hijacked the scene.
But ZSJPE vs JPU
ZSJPE is stock while JPU is leaked and still buggy
ZSJPE has everything fixed just like JPU
ZSJPE is completely bug free, and simply flys, JPU is having few bugs being reported
Kies connects, and no problem seeing internal and external storage on PC mac
Issues fixed in ZSJPE
GPS
Battery Life
Second Capital in Swype
Missing alphabets in contacts
Lag (nearly gone), quadrant without lagfix was over 1000.
As I researched, The XML files on apps from /data/data/<appname>/shared_prefs/ to /dbdata/databases/<appname>/shared_prefs/
According to Kalpik in post in thread JPU post 688 this could be the reason for the faster ROM.
Installation for trouble free and possibly best performance.
Backup apps through apps like titanium/mybackup
factory reset or full wipe.
go into download mode and flash using Odin, only PDA single file, NO PIT, no repartition required.
allow full boot and let full initialization, you will have to keep pressing next in setup wizard because it is in east asian language,
go to setttings>>location (from Square icon with A)>>Select 1st option>>select english.
shutdown
boot into download mode
flash speedmod kernel K10i
reboot
reboot into recovery
flash "simple root" installs super user and busybox.
flash 2e recovery
reboot
boot into recovery
apply lagfix (optional, as even without lagfix this rom flies), apply tweaks the top 4
reboot completely>>shutdown>>charge till full>>boot into recovery>>advanced CWM>>Clear battery stats
reboot and enjoy the NEW improved SGS experiance.
Do not expect quadrant scores over 1400-1600, but absolutely amazing phone.
Hope you will be able to find the ZSJPE and Speedmod Kernel in the forum.
Go Get It...
ROM (Thanks to clubtech for original release http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861446&highlight=zsjpe

ZSJPE is as fast and smooth as XXJPU. ZSJPE has not given me single bug over last 5 days of rigorous use (rather misuse) to my surprise. ZSJPE is official HongKong ROM available through kies as well.
XXJPU is leaked ROM and various bugs are being reported. Worst of them is the poorly optimized browser, which is being reported to show checkerboard pattern while zooming in or out.
Hope I have clarified the point.

I will try to attach the pics ASAP, for now I would say
Idle use, like overnight with only 2G and no data it consume 1% in 7-8 hrs
Day time idle use with wifi on, sync on, screen off, no calling, I get 1/2% to 1% per hr
With browser 3G or angry bird it dropped 15%-20% per hour.
I do not like to compare the total time on with light/moderate/heavy use because these are subjective and relative terms and often confuse.
Please Wipe Battery stats after Flashing and go through full charge discharge cycle at least twice before you should Assess or Comment on the battery performance.
I use this ROM too, Just amazing. Never had any trouble with it.
My steps to install were:
1 - Backup Apps with mybackup.
2 - Odin only PDA, no repartition.
3 - Factory Reset (+ Deleted/Formatted Everything)
4 - Language English.
5 - Changed input method to Samsung Keypad to get rid of Chinese.
6 - Flash Speedmod Kernel K10i
7 - SuperOneClickv1.5.5
8 - Restore Apps & Data.
Enjoy a really good phone.
Circle battery mod

(Remember THIS IS ODEXED ROM, so not all .zip would work.
The one that gets downloaded from online kitchen is to be modified by replacing AndroidManifest.xml and META-INF from the Original framework-res.apk into the cooked framework-res.apk for it to work. So be sure what you are doing.)
The attached here is ready to be flashed straight through recovery.
Attached also is the original framework-res.apk which may be flashed through recovery to revert.
I am not sure whether it matters but I flashed it on virgin (fresh flash) ROM.
thx mate gonna try this firmware. gonna reparation with pit 512 as my phone has a virus.
You are welcome?
This post would have served its purpose if few users are able to reap the benefit.

Steps may wary, but I emphasize to reboot after installs. Aim was to give slightly elaborate method for safe install for people like me.LOL.
No need for step Super one click. For root, speed mod kernel recovery had option for root.
I prefer to use least no of tools to modify system ' cos at times tools may conflict.

thanks topgnat, have been trying to update through Kies......Indicates battery insufficient even with 80%.....Will try again once I am at home
Frustrated with the force closes on JP6

Though it may be updated through kies, I would recommend you to follow the steps in first post. This would ensure 'clean' install which would ensure trouble free performance. Through kies it would not result in full wipe and may bring with it 'errors' to your new system.
Think about it.
So this is also a 2.2.1 release like JPU? Someone post a screenshot that proves it.

I have no where suggested that this is 2.2.1.
The title clearly says "best 2.2 rom".
Then you really shouldn't claim it's everything jpu is, and bug free at that. JPU is 2.2.1. And the jpu bugs you are reporting have not been a problem for me, I'm on docs ultra slim.

relax dude, hes simply stating an opinion and comparison is clearly given on first page..if the jpu bugs havent affected you they might have affected others, so i think its nice that there is another option out there.

Lol, it was not my intention to flame the guy, and I was pretty neutral in my wording, but it has to be allowed to clarify statements that are stated categorically and simply aren't correct. Even if bugs are a problem for some people, this thread gives the impression that they are pretty universal for the jpu, and that just isn't so. Also the fact that this isn't 2.2.1 is a fair thing to point out, if you ask me.

People often refer to Froyo as 2.2 regardless of whether it's 2.2 or 2.2.1. I figured it was only 2.2, but the fact that you were making direct comparisons to JPU had me wondering.
Hows the GPS? Locking time and accuracy?
Whats the difference between 2.2.1 and 2.2. anyways.... more speed?

[ROM] Captivated Vibrant-AOSPish

This is just the Vibrant-AOSPish rom with captivate parts. This is not my work i just swapped the modem and kernel out on it and removed some of the T-Mobile stuff.
This is just to see how the JK2 would boot on the captivate with a captivate kernel and a modem widely used on the captivate. I know there is not a big demand for froyo roms anymore because of the gingerbread look-alike froyo roms. I take no credit for the initial parts of this rom.
Specs on the captivate version 1:
-changed modem to JK4
-changed kernel to Hardcore's Speedmod K13C
-changed bootanimation and shutdown to that of the stock captivate firmwares
(second and after boots, boots too fast to play whole thing, may try to fix if anyone else
wants to use this version of this rom)
-added stock captivate boot sound
This is the actual Vibrant rom link:

This is the captivate version 1:

Ya know I was just looking at that tread last night wishing someone that was less lazy than I am would port this to the captivate lol. Downloading now.
yea let me know what you think. this rom would boot on the captivate without any changes but you dont get 100% out of it.
i tried dg's firebird kernel on it but there was a slight flicker in the screen but the i didnt get
this with the hardcore kernel
Perfect SpeedMod is better IMO anyway lol. The bootsound is a little early. It goes off when the ATT 3G bars fly in. Initially this is awesome and just what I wanted thank you lol. I'm stoked to tear this apart lol.
Yea I'm going to work with it some more.its not where I want it yet as far as the captivate goes.
Noooo nowhere close. I've ripped it apart and added some other apks and such and removed a lot of ****. It's very nice though.
Yea ill try to work on it more tonight and repost it. I'm finding things that need changing for our usage.
excited to see the progress on this
Yea there is still more captivation I need to do on this rom
I'm getting a FC when trying to DL anything from the market.
Is there a particular app that is making it fc??? I'm not getting any fc's.
nope it's whenever I try to DL an app it FC's. I'm gonna try swapping out a couple thing and see if it fixes it.
Ok let me know what you do. Did you swap out the market app?

i havent downloaded this, but make sure you have edited the build.prop and the fingerprint
So the FC happens when I start installing an app from the market. It downloads then as soon as it hits Installing it FCs and restarts my home screen and yes i changed my fingerprint.
EDIT: So I tried replacing the Vending.apk with the one from JS5 just hoping it would work lol and it didn't. Quite inconvenient.
Very intrigued to see this have been waiting for an AOSP ROM out there eventually.
Just a question I flash ROMs over each other by just wiping data cache and dalvik cache and disabling cache, this is no different than other ROMs as I could just flash this over a ROM such as Paragon.
I always got the jig and Odin nearby its just really tedious for me to go back to just JH7 haha.

I'm sure you could but it's always safer to flash back to stock first just to cover all your bases.

Yes I understand that but talking to a lot of members recently and testing it out myself with my jig.
I havent run into a single problem moving Darkyy-->Andromeda-->Phoenix-->Serendipity-->Paragon. By just doing all those things I said about wiping and disabling lag fix.
I havent had a single FC or any other problem.
But Im just making sure this isnt like a completely different beast haha.

Well it is a ROM based off JK2 which is for the Vibrant. Since you've got the jig though I wouldn't really worry about it. Trial and error lol.

Hahaha thats what makes having the Jig and odin so much fun I kinda hope the next time will be the time I get the boot loop and conquer it. I guess its an internal defeat and I can feel good... hahahha.
Hmm but ya that is a good point im loving Paragon which i just flashed today.
Im for sure watching how this develops right now .
