Problems with the included HTC Music Player - HD2 General

The included HTC Music Player (latest stock TMOUSA ROM) seems to have serious problems with its database.
Of course there are other options--such as the included Windows Media Player, and freeware solutions as TCPMP, commercial music players, etc.
But I like the HTC Music Player, how it plays from your home screen.
I like what happens when one turns the phone landscape, and sees a shuffle of album covers. Is that a gimmick? Yes, but I like it. Kind of fun to choose an album that way, like shuffling through CDs at home, rather than from a list like in WMP.
Yet, the app seems to have serious problems with its database. Although I have tons of music on it (more than 10 GB, all on the storage card), sometimes it cannot see any music at all.
Sometimes it shows no cover art (which is especially crucial for that album shuffle view), although the cover art is embedded in each song, and if one looks at the .vin file that HTCMP put in the folder, the cover art is there too, put there by the app. But somehow, it often doesn't read it. I do the "download cover art" thing, it shows a connection to Gracenote, but some albums never display their cover art, although it is already right there embedded in each song on the album.
What is going on with this app and its database?
Ia there any fix for it?
Is HTC aware of the problem, and working on a fix?
------------------------
While discussing the HTC Music Player, one other thing I am curious about. The phone also includes an HTC Video Player, in the windows folder, but with no link in the start menu to it, so most people will never discover it. (They do call that video player, though, to play the included "Transformers" movies, rather than WMP.) Why did they include their own video player, yet not even have a start menu item for it? Does it have any advantage over WMP for playing video?

As far as the data base goes it has a problem reading large amounts of music. Still on the stock SD card? Is HTC aware of this.....Most likely as it has been a prob from the start, is there a fix....not that I have found. The video player works from the albums tab as it pics up the movies and displays them in that tab.

Yes, I use the stock 16GB SD card. Why? Is there a problem with that?
It is unfortunate, since that album art landscape thing is so cool, yet the HTC Music Player does not see the cover art of many albums, although it itself has created the .vin file in each folder, which is a renamed .jpg of the correct art.
And sometimes it cannot find any music!
I sure wish there would be a fix.
No registry fix or anything, that will help it?

No there really isnt a prob with the stock SD card except it is a class 2 card so it reads and writes slowly, alot of my issues were fixed when I got a 16gb class 6 off ebay. Make sure all your music is in this format, Artist\album. the album art is handled my the id3 tags so make sure those are all set right. there should be 5 .jpg files in each album folder. I have uploaded a folder with the album jpeg files for you to compare yours to so hope it helps

Thanks. I am downloading your 7z file, and will take a look at it. I have only seen one .jpg in each album folder, which the HTC audio database renames to .vin extension.
Most of the time, that ,jpg is the correct album art for that album. Funny thing is, even so, with many albums the cover art does not display.
I have found a solution (in another thread here) to the problem of when one opens the HTC Music Player, go landscape to see all the albums, and it says something like "no music found", then starts a long search for your music.
It seems like the app forgets its databse every time you reboot the phone. Then when you start the music app, and click anything needing access to the library, it then starts searching for your music to put in the db.
If you add a link to the audio manager file (something like audiomanager_en.exe (in the Windows folder) to your \Windows\Startup folder, that will make it recreate the database on startup, so it will be ready when you want to play some music.
Seems an unnecessary waste of memory and boot time though, to have to do that. You don't need to do that with WMP. It remembers its database, and is there and ready when you use it. If you have added music, you can click rebuild library, and it will then rebuild it. But it does not need to rebuild after every reboot.
Makes me think of stopping the use of the HTC music player altogether, and just use WMP or alternatives like TCPMP and Mort. (Although the latter two don't use library at all, don't know why, just files and play lists.)
But there are nice things about the HTC Music Player--its integration into Sense, and that cool landscape cover art thing. I just wish they would fix the bugs, and get it working properly! (Anyone know if HTC will issue an update for the music player?)

Just looked at your .7z file. As you say, there are five album art .jpgs inside that folder.
It makes me wonder--what phone are you using? I think your HTC Music Player is different than mine.
The Music Player on my phone only creates one .jpg cover art file inside each of all my music folders, including those that work in showing cover art, and those that don't. (I guess it looks at the art embedded in the music file tags, and extracts the cover art in a separate file. It is a .jpg file, but renamed with the extension .vin.
Five cover art files, as exists in your folder, is non-existent on the TMOUSA HD2.
Funny thing too---In albums that do not show the cover art in the music player app, the .vin file the app created inside the album's folder--is still usually the correct album cover art. So the app can read the cover art embedded in the music files, creates its one folder ,jpg renamed .vin for the art, but still does not display it in the app.
Hey HTC, fix this app!

I wonder if it might have something to do with the resolution of the cover art?
While it might be able to read all cover art, and make the corresponding .vin (.jpg) file of it in the folder, the app only displays cover art that is in a certain pixel resolution, or a certain range of resolutions?
Could that be why some cover art displays, and others do not?
Anyone know?

I was using the HD 2. I copied the folders from my music file on my pc to my phone. so that may be the reason for the extra image files. but as it always showed the album art I left them there

HTC audio manager shuffle problem
Hi Guys,
This old issue is still unsolved on the last update 3.14, and it is really driving me crazy.
Have you been able to solve it?
Have anyone tried the latest OBOE 1.18 files?

How to display Album art ?

Does anyone know what I need to do to get album art to display in the Music Player ? I have tried placing image files in the same folder as the music and have tried naming them with the name of the Album and also with the name "Folder" all to no avail.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Rename the "Folder.jpg" to "hTC_AM_AlbumArt.jpg".
If you use itunes just drag an image into the album art box on the show info dialog box then copy the mp3 files to the phone. You can select all the songs in the album and do them at the same time. Don't use itunes' built in get album art feature, it doesn't work. I drag and dropped them from amazon.

Is "hTC_AM_AlbumArt.jpg" the folder I need to find in order to solve my problem detailed in the link below? If so, where can I find the damn thing to empty it?

Or use something like Media Monkey - Download Here. It's free and works for me.
I had a similar problem with my touch pro - ie i synced my music via windows media and the artwork never appeared. However, after inserting my memory card into the Touch HD, strangely all the artwork appeared! Not sure why it didnt show on the touch pro, but i guess its the same issue with the HD?

will it work if I place this folder in microsd?
I put directly album art in each mp3/aac file with mp3tag software (i do it in batch for album). I have no pb to see it in htc music player.

How do you use MM to put the album artwork in place though? I've taken my micro SD card, put it in my PC, added it to MM library and then a few tracks I've selected auto tag from Web. When it asks about album artwork I've selected to store it in the tag. The artwork shows in MM, but when I put it back in the HD it seems to have not worked

Been at this for hours today but so far this worked for me . . . .
I took the SD card out and put it into my PC via a micro reader - went to the 'My Music' folder on my SD Card. Made sure I was using MM from this point on. . .
Then I Right clicked on a track - chose 'properties' then went to the 'Album Art' tab - to check that the art has indeed gone there. I then went to my SD card - making sure that 'Hidden Folders' were displayed and deleted the 'once hidden' existing art files stored in the same folder as the MP3's. Shoved the SD card back into the HD and it worked ok.
My problem was that I had different art for the back and front artwork which was causing confusion both for me and the HD but I've learned that there is a lot more potential info stored on MP3 tags than I previously realised.
Nope, that doesn't work for me I still get the htc standard image.
When I put the memory card in the PC it could see the album art by the HD apparently can't?
Anyone else got any ideas?
How to get proper Album Art behaviour in TouchFLO 3D on Blackstone
So, just to make it even cleared:
Code:
SD CARD
--My Documents
----My Music
-------Artist
-----------Album
---------------Track 01.mp3/wma
---------------Track 02.mp3/wma
---------------Track 03.mp3/wma
---------------Track 04.mp3/wma
.
.
.
---------------hTC_AM_AlbumArt.jpg
hTC_AM_AlbumArt.jpg needs to be a 256x256 pixel image.
Do the same for other albums, there will be NO problem at all.
A good practise is to back up all your music from SD card to PC, delete everything music on SD card and recreate your music library from scratch, this time respecting what I outlined.
Cheers!
EDIT: Do not use embedded album art (i.e.: embedded pictures in tags) as it will only mess things up. Clean audio files with hTC_AM_AlbumArt.jpg file in album folder, together with the audio files.
EDIT 2: There are some Manila versions that use Folder.jpg as an album art reference. Other versions use ~htc_Albumname.jpg files. I've found this solution I described above to be the best solution.

Sorry mate but will post again if I come up with anything as some of the album art on my HD remains incorrectly associated with the respective MP3 and therefore needs further investigative work.
Perhaps someone more aware of the internal machinations of WM 6.1 & the Touch HD will be able to direct us to where the phone actually stores the info used by TouchFlo in relation to Album Art & MP3s.

You can find that info in Application Data\HTC\Audio Manager.
If you use my method and copy and organise files the way I described it (by simply copying them to device, via USB Storage Mode), there will be NO problems.
I have 50+ albums from 20+ artists and I keep changing the content, it updates on the fly, not a single glitch.
There is for sure a bug in the cover art of touchfow3d. It should use the embedded images in the MP3, but it does not. It will do that for only one file and all other files within that folder get the same cover art.
Of course you can work around this by grouping an artist/album in the same folder, the problem is that in my case I prefer the folder ordering done in time. It's of the 90's, 91's, 92's and so on.
Apparently the software thinks we all group our songs in albums so no need to scan the other files in that folder. Just reuse the same image found on the first MP3. I consider that a bug...
At present I don't store 'albums' on there, just individual tracks that I like, so this is a bit of a pain in the bum.
Setting up a folder for each track would be rather annoying...

Agreed - whole albums are something I store on my 80GB iPod not my phone.
However, as this is a 'bug' then it means I can stop trying to find a solution & just put up with naff album art being displayed alongside the MP3 being played. For me it's a minor issue on a phone that I am, overall, impressed with so far.

Even if you have singular files (rip from CD or whatever) and you update Album information from most players, they will regroup the in Artist\Album\Track order. Try to follow this.

OK - I couldn't resist and did exactly as you suggested. I did the following :
- created a folder in 'My Documents' on the SD card called 'My Music'
- for each track I created a folder named with the artists name
- inside the artists name folder I made another folder with the album name
- finally copied the track into the album folder
and all appears to be fine. I used Media Monkey to find and attach the album art to the MP3 and so far the correct album art is being displayed along with the correct track.
Thanks for the tips tnyynt - much appreciated & as all my other tracks (on my itunes/ipod) are already in the artist/album/track format then adding files will be a lot easier from now on - I just wont be able to drag and drop individual tracks into a single folder & expect the HD to organise itself.
What are the chances someone might find a 'fix' to this 'bug'? I really don't fancy all that messing about to be honest. Each time I have a few tracks I want to add, I have to be creating all those folders too

AARRGHH! 1.5 HOURS to finally get all of my Album Art on the Xperia??*RANT*

No matter if I used media sync with Windows media, or my iTunes interface program....I would only get about a 1/4 of the album art to load and show up.
Even using mp3 tag the Xperia wouldn't see but maybe 1/2 the albums.
So I had to sit there and "update album info" over and over on the PC's windows media player. Each time it may or may not grab album art, or it may only grab a little bit of info, or it may or may not create the folder.jpg file.
So I ended up having to open both sets of folder and transfer the folder.jpg for every album one by 'effing one.
I am just complaining so sorry for the b*tch fest. I know others here feel my pain so it is good to complain to people who can sympathize.
BUT GOOD LAWD can't Microsoft improve such a simple, stupid function?
Pants isn't it...
At least it's the windows side rather than the mobile side that's at fault for a change.
I tend to find the album art on amazon, (the mp3 off the USA site has decent cover art) and drag it to the cover in WMP. Is a bit quicker.
FWIW there's a PPC prog to do this automatically, it's not perfect and can get a bit confused.
adn on the pc this post might help..

i didnt find it too hard, i just use itune to grab the album art, and copy the entire itune folder over to the storage card, all album arts showed up fine
I have tried different apps (Windows Media Player, iTunes, Tag & Rename, Winamp and so on) and I have found one app with perfect handling of album art: Easy CD-DA Extractor. It adds album art perfectly within the ID-tag and the file. No problems with "folder.jpg" and such things.
It works perfect on my Xperia X1 with Pocket Player and OggVorbis. And I have tried MP3 and AAC with it without any problems. Even album art and eAAC+ works perfect both on X1 with Pocket Player and my Nokia E90 (who has strict requirements regarding album art, other apps canĀ“t add them correctly but Easy CD-DA Extractor can).
Try that app and be happy.
I tagged mine in the latest version of mp3 tag. It embeds them and they worked fine, for some reason media monkey and the previous version of mp3 tag couldn't do it so they would appear in the media panel (or my ps3)...
Shame about media monkey, its a really nice media management software...
WMP, Mortplayer and S2p all fine, but media panel(orig or pubba prog) only see similar to urs...1/4.
My music is on SD and synced directly from MP11..
Any solutions?

??? I can't comment on the phone, but I use Media Monkey to tag my MP3 with text info and album art, and it shows up on the PS3 fine... Maybe it's a setting somewhere? I just use the defaults for adding album art in MM.
I only use MP3Tag to label the filenames; I find MM allows me to tag more info to an MP3 than MP3Tag does.
media monkey works for me too - I can see album art in wmp, core player, tf3d and media panel.
I guess it is all depend on how the images are stored and referenced on your PC? some players just read folder.jpg, others look at the id3 tags instead, if you make sure you have all bases covered, ie tags point to folder.jpg it should work
Your problem is not with the Xperia then, your subject title is misleading. Use tagscanner to apply the album art, works on every file.
mp3tag
Same, I use mp3 tag, because I have 4 monitors I just sit there with amazon on one, mp3 tag on another, xperia on another and my music folder on another. Drag the art from amazon to mp3 tag, use the music folder to drag the stuff i want to change to mp3 tag, then when done drag it all to xperia.
I gave up trying to get automatic album art a long time ago, I do it all myself for old music, anything I download normally has the art embedded and when I'm ripping CDs i never seem to have a problem with art.
But I guess not everyone is legit

TF3D Music Player- Help its killing me!!!!!!!

I am having a nightmare with this hunk of brown steaming excretia!!!!! Firstly you have to load songs through Media player-WHY!!!!! What was wrong with dragging and dropping it onto the memory card like I used to do with my Touch.
Second Having waited whilst windows makes me grow older loading toons on the card, having play ok for a week, its just decided it will only play the first 2 seconds of a song any song then lock up!!! It lets me see all my songs, artists, albums, artwork, everything but the bl00dy tease wont let me play em. Worst of all the windows media player on the phone plays it all fine!!!!
Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you can drag and drop the files
thats the way i do it and i usually play via tf3d , but iv never had a problem of the music stopping
Do you keep your mp3s in a particular file on the sd card and do you "treat" them in any way album art tag edit etc? Cheers for the answer, this is driving me mad!
I drag and drop directly into the storage card. I avoid WMP when possible - it seems to take forever.
The only problem with drag and drop approach is that sometimes TF3D does not seem to see the update. So, you might have to stop TF3D and restart it - this forces the music player to rescann available files.
How do you stop Tf3d, and how long does your HD take to update the list when you restart it?
even though i use tf3d when i start the music player i always go in library option then choose my music through that
I created a folder on my SD called Music and dragged albums to it. Play them via TF3D and point the library at the SD. It scans the entire card to find the music. then lists them. Only problem I had is when I removed some music from the SD and they still appeared in the TF3D.Resolved it by finding the library file, deleting it and then rescanning card........
Don't bother with the WMP
quick questions for the pro here.... how can i have only one folder showing off my storage card. for example i hate having it scan all of the card, and having ringtones mixed in there.... i wish i could have music and ring tones separate how ever only full songs on the player

This is not something I do often but in the settings, personal, today you can deselect TF3D and then reselect it.
It seems that TF3D does not have a special "scan" button so the best way is to stop and restart TF3D. I have also Pocket Tunes and Pocket Player - both have scan options. But, I generally use TF3D.

Cheers to all the guys who answered the original question
Stopped using media player, wow what a relief.
Got a new problem now though After spending a night finding and adding album art, I loaded the mp3s, stopped and started TF3D, cool it saw the mp3s fine. Not so cool, it has "stuck on one of the album pics and wont move!!! the song changes, the title changes but the picture stays the same!!!
marmin you are not alone. I have the same problems with tf3d player and its almost killing me.
my k800i was perfect in this disciplin.
1.
I copied all my mp3s on my sd card (no activesync). I have 4 songs with different integrated covers and my player shows all the time the same cover.
2.
The other frustrating thing is the thing with ringtones. Somebody already mention it. I just want to say tf3D: "hey only scan this folder. the rest is none of your business. nothing else." but it scans all the time my whole device including ringtones.
Here is the file I deleted prior to a rescan (as mentioned in my previous post) .......
My Device\Application Data\HTC\AudioManager_Eng
although you could just rename it so you can change it back again if a problem arises.....
When I scanned afterward it recreated the entire music database from my SD including the assoication for image files to their respective albums.

i haven't tried this idea, but I think it would certainly be worth investigating (I'd check it for you guys but a bit busy till the weekend arrives). But for those that know how to edit the registry (really simple), try and add a new key to the respective TF3D music player folder called "Ignore". In the new key, add a 'string value' for your descritption (name of folder would do nicely). More importantly, set the "Data" to the full path of the folder to be ignored (something like "Storage Card\Ringtones"). I think this might work as it works with the TF3D album (forces it to ignore the folders which you tell it to and all its sub-folders). Please let me know if you try this and if it works or not (if no one tries it I'll try to give it a go over the weekend)
Good Luck (and hope it works)
Album art in the TF3D music player.
I am having those issues too. My problems started when I embedded the art into the MP3's. It not only hangs on the art, it also will only play about 2- seconds of the song before stopping. I can play the songs fine with the Windows media player though, so I had to put it on the programs tab so I could get to it easy.
Anothr thing about the HTC player, is it doesn't seem to go into sub folders very well, where the Windows player does. But like you said, it picks up on EVERYTHING, and that's extremely annoying.
Thought I'd give a shout out to S2P, a great freeware music player, which some of you will know of but other's might not:

As others have said, Nitrogen and Pocket Player are also great players

Music album art in gallery

I tranfered some music folders from my computer to my SD card and now I have Album Cover Art in my Gallery how do I fix
Best
BoogieTilt
google "android .nomedia" and read the guides from there
I used ".nomedia" and it works like a charm.
It's possible the music folders had image files in them along with the music. Depending on what you use to play your music on the computer, the image files could very well hidden files on your computer.
For example, Windows Media Player does this when it looks up song info to fill out the ID3 tag info in a file.
Although I'm not sure if a Windows file attribute of hidden would affect how it displays on Android.
Make sure your album art is in the same folder as the music relating to it and rename it 'albumart' (it has to be a jpg file). That way the gallery will ignore it.
Easier way to prevent this issue would be to not have album art in the music folder, or simply save the art to the ID3 tag. Album art info should be in the MP3 file itself if your did that.
Otherwise, what C.Slater said works best or use the .nomedia trick (which is still annoying to do).
Some players wont display embedded art.
Had the same problem, just deleted all the music album art jpgs from the sd card and that fixed it. Album art is stored in the files themselves it seems so they are not needed.
My old touch pro 2 stored album art in jpgs so that's where the problem came from.

Album Cover Art

Can someone please tell me the best way to save album art? Everytime I update or change roms I lose the cover art. Now I am currently using "Cover Art Downloader" which will automatically find the covers in batch mode when you want, but I was wondering if there is a way to save it with the music on the ext. sd card. Does anyone know how to do this?
I am using the same app. I don't think there's a way to save them. Every time I flash a new rom I have to redownload them too. Its a pain!

If you sort music by album, there's a way to do:
You can grab the album cover pic from amazon, scan it yourself, or search, and put it to corresponding folder with audio files.
I did the same thing and I have album cover on every album folder.
I use mediamonkey to organize my mp3s and it has the ability to embed the cover art into the mp3 itself so it always stays with the music. Media monkey also has the ability to sync playlists using the media player usb mode on the phone.
where do you get media monkey? i don't see it in the market.

Yea, you wouldn't - it is a PC application.
It also has the ability to reencode all your music on the fly while transferring. I keep all my music in archive quality MP3 and Flac files, but I don't want it to take up that much space on my phone, so I have it automatically transcode everything to 64Kbps WMA on transfer, which sounds ok in my cheap earbuds anyhow. The downside is that I lose my embedded album art, so keep in mind that the embedded album art and the transcoding to save space are mutually exclusive if you use Media Monkey. Both features are great, you just have to pick which one is more important to you.

Just be aware that if you do this, all the album cover pictures will now show up in the gallery which kind of sucks if you have a lot of albums.
what does music player look for?
Where does the music player look for album art, and where? An image file with the same album name? It is ok with embedded art too?
If you use poweramp it will just re dl the set for you or you can manually do it through album art app. I know this didn't answer you exactly but it's a solution
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.

I had this same issue and my way around that was to delete all of my old cover art and then use "Album Art Grabber" from the Market, which collects everything automatically and puts it into 1 folder.
In the end, I have 1 folder in "My Gallery" with all of my album artwork and everything is nicely organized in one place. I also think you can choose the folder you want to save your artwork to....At the very least, you could always copy the artwork folder and place it wherever you want (SD Card or Internal HD).
Hope that helps!

Won't that also keep your MP3s in the folder from showing up in the music player?

If you guys dont mind spending a little money Poweramp does all this automatically.

I listen to mostly hiphop and r&b and the audio is great. I plug it up to my car auido jack and sounds amazing through my ported subs. Also really good thru headsets.
I personally started using this program when stock android and touchwiz music player was playing the audio from installed games, ringtones, some videos, movies, and podcast.
This program only plays music form the folders you select. THis works great with the vibrant having 2 seperate memory cards. Because I have music in the internal/external.
Edit: I also wanted to add that cover art got on my nerves when I have atleast 100 albums on my sd cards. Its not always simple as adding a picture to the album folder. You usually have to rename them to Cover.jpg/Cover.jpeg/Albumart.jpg etc. I have majority of my music on my external 16gb and it had compatibility problems when having certain albums in the same folder. Poweramp takes care of all of that. I dont pay for a ton of apps but this one I would recommend.
if you get the "donate" version of cover art downloader, there is an option in the settings to "embed cover art into id3 tag (mp3 only).

I don't believe so because it is a flag used by the gallery app, not the music player app. Any application can behave however it is programmed of course, but most picture apps honor the file and most multimedia apps don't.
The best way is also the biggest pain-in-the-butt way.
Use a computer program on a desktop computer to embed the album art into the mp3 itself. Then transfer the mp3 files back to your vibrant.
I use MP3 Tagger, which also lets me correct MP3 ID data.
It is a work in progress for me. I have done all of my mp3 files beginning with 'A' and 'B'.
At my current pace I should be done in about 5 years.

I'm positive the .nomedia file will keep audio from showing up in the music player. I did this to keep lets golf sounds and other game sounds from showing up there. So that file would keep the image from showing up in the gallery, but also the mp3's wouldn't show up in music player either.
