[Samsung Moment] Root Instructions

1) Partition your SD Card to have first partition as fat16 and second ext3 [this tutorial assumes you have this setup exactly as stated]
2) Boot in Test Mode with Call+Center+Power
3) copy root into your tools directory of the sdk
4) adb push root /system
5) adb shell chmod 0755 /system/root
6) adb shell /system/root
7) unplug usb, remove battery, reboot into test mode when instructed
8) adb shell
9) /system/bin/btld_testmode
10) /system/root

Excellent. It work!. Just do exatly the steps above. Thanks for putting all this info together.
FYI... Samsung post the source code of the samsung moment.

Is this temp or persistent root? For temp root I don't think partitioning the sd card is necessary or at least I didn't partition it when I temp rooted my Moment.

Was a long time WinMo user, I was stuck with a Moto Q9c on sprint for way to long. I'm still stuck with sprint, but got the Moment in hopes of having a badass Android to start with.
Night and Day compared to my Q, the root is key though, custom rom's were so easy on the Q.
soooo im a newb to android, same question as johnbarry3434.
does it stick?
I've got two Moment's(thanks sprint for shipping me 2 and charging me for neither) ?maybe one for test purposes?

I cannot get my samsung to root
I have the updated cupcake cl14 and when I boot my phone with talk+center+power, I boot into a test mode that lets me test the screen, keyboard, and so on. I did copy the root file (supplied from the instructions ) to the main part of my card on both partitions, and partitioned it just as it stated in the 1st step. I don't understand what the "adb" is and how to use it. Can this only be down with windows because I'm am using Ubuntu. I know adb is advance debugging bridge but after some google searches I still don't know how to use it. I now a little about chmod 0755 because of Ubuntu but any "hand-holding" instructions would be great thankyou to everyone who is willing to help me and others out with this problem.

Is there still no "real" benefit for root access for the Moment? As in no good reason to root the phone? My girlfriend has one and I was hoping that it was at least close behind my Hero by now in terms of root access benefits....TIA

My sister, wifes sister, she has the Moment.. I have always wanted to root this just cause of the 800mhz processor... This was the first device to almost meet up with the Nexus before it was even thought up..
Is there Roms, Themes, Kernels, etc.. I see nothing, but a root, useless, without an accommodation, thanks anyway, always good to have the key to the door first..

yes this info is way outdated. just flash the kernel with speedyrabbit's or joeykrim's kernel and you'll have persistent root, plus a much faster phone.

also, speedyrabbit's kernel has wifi tether and flash_image support. you can download from www(dot)sdx-developers(dot)com.

[Q] New to Root

So, I used to run WinMo way back when, and I'm familiar with flashing, HardSPL, blah blah blah, whatevs. I haven't done the rooting process yet on my phone because I'm finding it hard to find a few key things that I need.
-What is the effect on my phone when I root, in regards to data? Do I need to backup? If so, can I backup on my SD card or is everything wiped? What program could I use to backup?
-Are there any crazy little tweaks or tips that anyone has to help guard against a brick?
-I've read the pros and cons list, but can I get more details from someone? Can this help with battery life, allow me to flash my radio, increase general connectivity, etc.
All help would be greatly appreciated, and I'll plan on doing a donation today. I've just been out of the loop (running WinMo 6.5 style out of the loop:/) so some advice to a rook would be great. My goal is to get out of school and come home and root and fiddle with things with little to no problems. Thanks a ton everyone.

The process of actually rooting doesn't mess with any of your stuff.
I use Titanium Backup to restore apps after flashing roms.
In general, most of this stuff COULD help your battery life, here there are Devs that will help - with sprint you get their tech support.

Well, I DL'ed TB and it says that I have to root first? Am I missing something here? Is it ok to root or will it delete all of my apps and what not? I mean, if it does, it isn't really that big of a deal, considering I can just download them again, I'm just looking for input.

I'm pretty new, too, but I think I can answer your questions. Rooting (at least with the One Click Method I used on my Epic) doesn't destroy any data/apps on your phone. It simply gives your user root access to the underlying OS. Once that is achieved, you can modify things and tweak things. Titanium Backup will let you backup all system files and data, but only AFTER rooting.
This is not a ROM flash or anything like that from the WinMo days. I haven't gotten that far on Android, so I'm not sure what the flashing options are yet, but rooting is harmless on its own. It will let you royally screw things up though, so once it is done, be careful what you do.

Well, I tried to do a few things like listed in the One-Click root thread, but I guess I'm just not getting it. Now that I know the effects of the root, I'd like to be able to actually do it, but I don't have enough details. I haven't ever rooted before, and I'm finding it confusing. What was listed in the one-click thread wasn't specific enough for me, I don't know if I need to run from SD card, what the ADB thing is, nothing. I was a WinMo master and I'm finally coming to Android which is literally worlds away from my comfortable norm.

what os are you running? the one click comes with everything you need. theres an osx version the windows version that noobnl updates and the linux version i maintain

I wouldn't exactly call root harmless..in itself it is ok..but if you give root access to a program that program has FULL access to your system..aka anything inputed on your phone or stored on your phone can be accessed by the program with root access. Though generally its not a problem..just careful which programs you allow to use root access.
Also, at what point are you getting stuck? did you install the drivers? are you getting any sort of errors or etc?

There is also some good reading over at SDX Developers.
I have hacked and rooted before, WinMo, Palm, HTC Hero, but this one was tough. It basically took me two days off and on, but it worked - finally.
Downloading drivers is a b--h, they are finicky and I needed all of them, kept
hanging on 2. They are slow, and kept looking for sources.
Search here, there is good info, then look there (above) I used OneClickExploit 2.2.4 which finally worked. It had some of the same files
in other methods, but this one worked.
I'm not changing roms, did on Hero to 2.2 because they weren't getting upgrade but I'm just going to hang and wait for Froyo.

Download and unzip the one-click archive in to a folder. Double-click the run.bat. I had some problems where it would start and then hang. I often had to kill it and rerun the batch file. Sometimes I had to end task on the adb.exe process. Eventually after rebooting the phone, etc, I was able to get it to work. Not sure what the exact problem was. I think part of it was connectivity to the phone via usb. Connect through a port on your computer, not a hub.
Also, the batch file is just a bunch of commands. You can open a command line in the folder where the batch file is and run each line in the batch file individually from the command line. That will give you some idea of what is happening and where it might be failing.
Like I said, I had to stop and restart a bunch of time before it finally got through to the end of the batch file correctly. When it did, it was fast. Not sure what was happening.

When I try to install the drivers I get this message:
"The MSS InstallWizard was not Completed for SAMSUNG USB Driver for Mobile Phones V1.3.450.0
The MSS InstallWizard was not successfully installed SAMSUNG USB Driver for Mobile Phones V1.3.450.0. Click Finish to exit the wizard.
And I'm basically stuck there. I've searched around and can't find any drivers that will work. Like I said, I'm on 64-bit Windows 7 with a clean OS and no previous negative install history. Not sure what the issue could be?

Found the drivers and everything that I needed and I'm rooted, but now I have one more question. I don't plan on flashing any roms, I'm alright with the stock rom, at least for now. I wanted to know what rooting will do in regards to over the air updates on my phone. Will I be able to OTA to FroYo when released? Any info would be great guys, thanks.

where did you find the drivers? I am having the exact same problem that you had where the installwizard cannot download finish installing the drivers for whatever reason

Let me start with admitting that I'm a newbie, a green one, whatever you want. I've bought my WF, my first smartphone, one week ago, and after a day a was confronted with my first limitation: I can't make access to the cisco vpn that my university uses.
I've started looking on the internet, and my only hope is a program called VPN connection, which needs root access to work. Not only the fact that I couldn't install that specific application, but also the disappointment of a discovery that the open-source OS was in fact closed, made me want to root my phone.
So I again started to do research on the internet, mostly by night, which makes me sit like a zombie in lessons, but I've learned a lot. However, there are still a few questions, which I just can't find the answer for.. So I'm hoping one of you would be so kind to help me out a bit!
- I've come to find out that rooting te WF just changes the read/write access of the root directory. So rooting an sich will not change any of the files or settings, nor the language (Dutch). Is that right, or is there an install of a complete "customized" (English) ROM which make the cellphone look brand new?
- I've done some research on how to unroot the WF (I'm having a 2 year waranty..). I know you can download the original ROMs here (shipped-roms.com/shipped/Buzz/) but first of all, I don't know which one to pick, and second, will there be a Dutch one there? Because I'm not sure that they will accept the statement that my phone is suddenly turned English.
Those are in fact the only two questions I have (for now ). Thanks in advance to help me entering a whole new world!

The Android OS is a linux. And for such OS, there is a user account with UID 0, thats the "root" account, who got all privileges on the system.
If you root your phone, you will give your "user", thats the user that runs the android OS, the ability to gain root privileges. Those are necessary to do administrative changes to the OS, same as on a usual linux OS.
So the root user is able to mount devices in read/write and do other stuff.
Most official Updates are multilanguage and they are official updates from HTC so even on warranty issues there should be no problem with it.

Thank you very much for giving me this explanation! But when you talk about "root your phone", I still have a question. If I root my phone, it will be by the method of Unrevoked (Unrevoked 3.21). I understand that the user now has root privileges, but how is that being accomplished? Do they flash the phone with a new ROM, who has "build-in" extended privileges, or do they really change the privileges of some maps on the ROM that originally came with the phone?
In extend I want to make sure about something: so if I install an original UK ROM from shipped-roms.com, I can just install it with the clockworkmod on my device and do an official update, witch will make my phone dutch again?

It will not change any of the settings, I myself had it in dutch too. It will be the same as you shut it down, only thing that has changed is the recovery mode (entered by holding the volume down and press the boot key)

I dont know either which one to pick, but I _DO_ know that if I pick the right one, it will include dutch, together with several others including English.

[Q] eLocity a7

After installing dexter's 1.3 mod, i still do not see market....I know mod works because of sound volume change...I checked sd card on tablet and it shows update.zip.zip but on laptop card reads update.zip only...is that where the problem lies? I'm not sure where i should be finding the market app...or , is there something else I should do?

Not quite. If you do that on any of my workstations or laptops you will end up with a file
named just 'Update.'
It all depends on the settings you have in Windows File Manager.
If a user is going to be dealing with file extensions then the feature that is set to
'Hide File Extensions' needs to be disabled, Hence the link to the post on how to do that.
The instructions in the posting do not need clarification, File Manager needs tweaking
and that is how it needs to be configured to eliminate confusion.
It's rough that MS still realies on file extensions. And then when users are trying to do
something that requires that detail it gets confusing.

Are you serious? Get off the cheap drugs, the expensive ones won't $#% you up so bad.
I think you are actually the one that started me on that rant that I linked (that went into enough detail that it described, and gave instructions on how to fix people's common issues from TWO OPERATING SYSTEMS!) You keep telling people "just name it update" you are wrong, dead wrong. the file NEEDS to be update.zip and your generalization will only cause issues for people that wouldn't have had them otherwise... So it looks like you are the one that posts instructions that need clarification.
I posted the link because it had already been answered, I am not going to type until I am blue in the face just because some people don't have the gift of search.

I just received an A7 that I purchased for my wife. Want to add the marketplace and the ability to tether with an EVO. Have been reading and am worried that I may do more damage than good. If anyone has the time to help a beginner, I would be sincerely appreciative. Thanks and have a great day!

1) Install elocitymod 1.3 on your A7 (install instructions are at the beginning of the thread for it in the A7 Development section)
2) Wait on the bluetooth fix to see if you have any problems (I am running without the BT fix and running fine, others have issues and the BT fix helps them out)
3) If you don't want to pay Sprint $30 extra a month you are going to have to root the EVO
3a) Use unrevoked3 (quick google search)
I would recommend doing it from a Mac just because it is easier, PC you have to install drivers.
3b) Once the EVO is rooted, install "Wireless Tether" from the Market (on the EVO)
4) Profit.
This is pretty much my setup and I love it. I have done other modifications to my A7 and my EVO, but nothing that would alter this.

It downloaded five different files, which one should be renamed to update or update.zip? Downloaded pda.net on the evo and on the laptop and it worked fine. Just wasn't sure what to download for the A7 to make it work. Thanks again and have a great day.

the file ElocityModv13.zip should be update.zip
Make sure Hide extensions for known file types is OFF in Windows.
I'm starting to suspect that the micro card reader in the A7 might just be finicky.
What size and type of Micro SDCard are you using?
Do me a favor and do a 'Properties' on the Dexter Mod file and post back what size is reported.
Try formatting the card this way: -=- LINK -=-

I think the ELocity only supports the micro SHDC cards not vanilla micro SD cards. Someone else in another thread had a problem with update.zip and it turned out it was on a vanilla micro SD card and when they used a micro SDHC card it worked.

i'm a total beginner in these things of smartphones, but i'd really like to upgrade it and put a 2.2 or 2.3 version of android, but i'm not so sure how to do it
i searched for topics and guides here but none of them were too clear of them, and any of them were for my especific telephone
so i'm asking the obvious haha, anyone could help me and post a step to step guide for installing a custom rom in this especific cell phone? please, i kinda hate this right now, i can't install anything XD
and well if not, or in addition, if someone wants to help me step by step through pms or msn or somethign like that, it would be great too!
and well, the last one, if i can get a guide to do it, wich rom could you recommend me? to get all the potential of this cell phone XD hah

My app root toolbox will flash a recovery image, all download links in my signature.
For root access use z4root. Don't update to 2.1 because z4root doesn't work on some versions of it.

Also have a look here before you change roms/unlock fastboot

Nice to see you're still on 1.6 , We really need your help right now!

If you haven't already rooted , Follow these steps :
1. Download http://bit.ly/9wAKC5 and transfer to phones SD Card
2. Download Astro File Manager in Market (Or any other file manager)
3. Open the file manager and locate the application you downloaded
4. Click on the File and Install the Universal Androot .apk
5. Run Universal Androot and select Superuser for 2.0 - 2.2
6. Click 'Go Root'
7. Follow any restart prompts
8. Go back into market and download Terminal Emulator
9. Follow the instructions from the CODE box on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123968
10. The files will be created in the backup1.6 folder on the SD
11. Using a computer, .ZIP these files and upload them to the filesharing site of your choice
12. Share the link to us
13. Be very proud of yourself, you've helped us all
Then after , I would install 2.1 using LG Software Updater (Easiest Method)
But EVERYTHING is deleted , Including contacts and SMS when doing so. To backup contacts , click Contacts , Press Menu and press Export then Export to SD
To backup SMS I recommend SMS Backup and Restore from Market.

and you told me to upload to official 2.1 android through lg site,, i am known that 2.1 is just, mmm , as 1.6 XD i mean, you have problems to install things in the sd, and many apks does not work, and the flash is dead x.x haha
but well, i'll do that first before upgrading to another version!
