[Q] a few media playback questions - Galaxy S I9000 General

Been an Iphone user from day one and pretty much know the ins and outs of everything iphone but next to nothing about Android smartphones, so before I take the plunge and get a Galaxy S, I have a few questions that only XDA guys can fully answer.
1.Can the Galaxy S smoothly play 720P MKV's (via the 3.5mm TV out) and can it show embeded subtitles?
2.Does the media player have slowmo (FF/RW) options?
3.Can the Galaxy S capture screen shots (like the iphone home & power button screen grab ability) ?
4.Which Sat Nav software is highly recommended (I'm using NDrive on the iphone which only cost less than £5 when it was available on the app store) ?
Bottom line, The iphone has too many media restrictions, so I'm hoping the galaxy s will be a full portable media device.
Thanks

Anyone ?
Oh, is it able to play MKV's with DTS audio (does it down downmix) ?

1. yes, no, no, need another player software
2. same as above
3. yes, use the shakey shakey app to capture, very easy
4. i like CoPilot, other likes IGo, there are many many more to chose from, there are even open source freewares

Are you saying it can't output 720p mkv's to an external display via the 3.5mm output plug?

The adapter that lets you output video through the 3.5mm headphone jack is a standard composite RCA cable (red, yellow, white). This type of A/V connection is not HD capable and can only output NTSC or PAL (basically 480i res) to an SD television. If you want to do HD out you need to use DLNA to wirelessly stream the video to a supported player (or the just announced Samsung DLNA streaming accessory) or use the microusb-hdmi adapter that has been announced.

Micro USB to HDMI For 720p output.

I understand it can't output 720p res via the 3.5mm but will it output a lower res composite mirror video if it's playing a 720p MKV ?

RE the sat nav.... All android phones have free turn by turn nav using Google Navigation.. Its one of androids best features.
Yes you need data but who gets a smartphone without data?
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App

I've found "over the air" sat nav is never as fast as having a program with maps already stored on an SD card.
Is there an affordable app (like NDrive) that doesn't cost an arm and a leg over it's iphone equivalent but really shows off the capability of the Galaxy S?
Thing is, I'm coming over to Android from an iphone background but find that Android users are asked to pay over the odds for equivalent iphone apps.

there are a few open source ones (that uses downloaded maps), forgot the names
personally i prefer CoPilot for Android, it's the best one out there at the moment

I dunno what you've tried it with but google nav flies. It also dls everything it needs for the trip you set at the beginning of the trip so that it's not pulling it while you're driving. This improves speed and also keeps the nav working if you go out of service mid trip. However, google nav/maps always flies on 3g for me so you shouldn't be concerned. I also found that a lot of equiv apps are actually cheaper on android, not more expensive.

Not sure what you mean by "As fast as". With 3G i have never had google maps not keep up with my driving.
I used to have a Tomtom and ditched it when I got this. Useless to me now.

Using x7500 as a PMP. How does it perform?

Hi everybody, I am an hi-tech fan from Italy.
I discovered this incredible device, and I am seriously thinking of buying it to replace my WM6 based smartphone (eten m700) and my multimedia player Archos 605 wifi.
I would like to know:
1) How many hours of continous video and audio playing can I get with the X7500?
2) Do codecs for VOB, AC3, OGG, and every other audio/video format exist in WM6?
3)How good is the audio quality with earphones?
4) Is there a program like Videolan for WM6?
5) Can I dowclock the cpu of the device to gain some more battery life?
6) Is there a way to install windows XP or a distribution of linux on it? Ok, 7aybe it is Sci-Fi....
8) I am also thinking to equipe it, if I will buy it, with a 16GB sdhc card. Is the file transfer from pc fast?
9) Does the x7500 have an USB Host function? If yes, is it USB 1.1 or USB 2.0?
10) Am I asking too much to this device or can it be a good PMP?
Thank you very much for the help, folks
First of all, welcome to the forum.
1. Couldn't say exactly. I've watched 2 full movies once and can't remember how much battery was left, but for sure it can play at least 4 hours of video.
2. I'm not sure about VOB files, but everything else you've mentioned work fine.
3. I'm not an audiophile to say the least, but I find the sound quality to be very good.
4. TCPMP is kinda like VLAN (free and can play almost everything), but not the same.
5. Yes, but video performance would probably suffer from that.
6. Actually, there is a linux project going on, but don't know how close is it to become a reality.
7. Hey, there is no 7.
8. Have no idea.
9. It has a USB host cable (4-in-1 cable), but its 1.1
10. I'm using it as a UMPC/PMP. while its not perfect for each task seperately, I believe that it's the best all-in-one device today.
Hi Mauveron and welcome also, as Kramerica2 said Its a great device but I would hold out until the x7510 comes out. Its suppose to have some of the bugs fixed and more storage capacity IMO. CIAO...TJ

Stock headphones doesn't sound great. But the best thing in this device is a 3.5mm audio output jack where you can plug normal earphones. If you can get a good quality one, then along with Pocket Music Player or CorePlayer, you can get the best music!
Video playback is best when files are optimized.
File transfer from PC is not fast. It's better you have a card-reader to transfer them or why bother?

Carty..

7) was:
- can I output video to a composit e input (red, white and yellow coaxial cables)?
I've been looking on eBay for an usb 11 pins to composite adapter, but I cannot find it.
EDIT: answer found. I can use the 4 in 1 cable with an s-video to composite adapter!
what about the gaming??
has anyone tested FPSECE with whe monster? Do the games run smooth?
And Scummvm? Does it support 480x640 res?
What about the other emulators? Can I play snes/genesis/neogeo games at full speed on the x7500?

I am also interested by that.
Any ideas?
Basically, I would like to know if TV out is possible to connect it to my car entertainment device that I am planning to buy :
Din 1, 7 inch with DVD, GPS, Bluetoth, USB.
This will transform this device to a mobile device with a large screen from where I can surf, chat, play games etc...(launch all apps from the HTC HD2)
Any ideas?
It's not possible. Sorry, but it really is that simple.
Thanks for the answer.
Is this because of the harware that does not support it or is it because there is no driver developped by HTC?
i really think thats a driver problem only Maybe there is a way to stream video signal over wifi or bluetooth? it's kinda strange thing to do but i think it's possible using a software?
I read in a forum that via the 3,5mm jack it might be possible to video out (it was for another phone).
If Hardware does not support it via micro USB, we are stuck I guess,
If it is a driver issue, xda gurus might develep one,
If micro USB does not support it, what about the 3,5 mm jack?
I am not an expert at all, but I am just brainstorming...
Any thoughts?
This is the message I got rom HTC Support
Thank you for your enquiry about HTC HD2
To answer question 1 and 2, the HD2 does not support video out as it does not have a built in video out socket nor would you be able to achieve this via the 3,5mm jack.
It is not a built in function to handle this via bluetooth I could only suggest you try to look up some 3rd party program, but I could not provide support for this.
Best regards,
Dennis
HTC
Well actually, the HD2 does support video out! Using myMobiler you can display in full screen on your PC what's going on on your HD2. And if in turn, you connect your PC to your TV you could also watch your HD2 on your 50'' Full HD TV screen
OK, I'm joking here, the quality would be terrible, but still, it goes to show that it's possible to have video come out from the micro USB port and be displayed on a much larger screen, so maybe someone will go one step further!

Mon pot
I basically wanted to connect my HD2 to a Car Entertaniement device which has a 7 inch touch-screen, 'genre auto-radio', (7 ' Din1, DVD, GPS, Bluetooth, USB) in order to take advantage of all features/applications from the HTC (Google maps, dictionnaires, enclyclopedia, 3G, opera, chat etc).
Mymobiler will not help at all.
The HTC Touch Pro supports the video-out; The HTC DH2 does not support it as it is now. I have seen on http://wmpoweruser.com/ a guy making a video out cable for this LG eXpo. Check the video. Why can't we do it?
It shouldn't be difficult to make a video out cable...
Via a redfly?
If you were really committed, you could grab a Celiocorp Redfly, wait until they release the HD2 driver, then use the media cable to output to video...
Then, for the transmission of the video, you could use either bluetooth or micro-USB.
So it's technically possible with the right hardware...
The closest thing you'll get to TV out on the HD2 is the ability to set it as a media server, but that will require some kind of media browser client. I've done this with my PS3 and a Nokia N95, but the software is currently under development for the WM platform.
See here...
http://mobileosgi.blogspot.com/2009/08/dlna-media-server-for-smart-phones.html
Incidentally, they use a PS3 on the demo video, but that is not required. Also, you can use this to stream video, not just pictures.
problem is
phones that output through the 3.5 jack have an extra connector inside the socket to carry the image channel so there is no way to adapt a standard 3.5 output to carry video regardless of software. (not taking mine apart to look if its 2 or 3 chanel of course hehe)
as for through the usb im less sure but i'd guess it would only be able to send to host devices and not client peripherals. course, I'd be more than happy to be told otherwise.

The processor has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not the device can output video. It needs specific hardware to do this and it is not included in this device, neither through the USB port or the 3.5mm jack socket.
It is 100% impossible to implement a "fix" for this with software because the device simply does not have the hardware required.
Actually, Snapdragon processors DO support TV-Out. The Acer s200 (neo touch) and Toshiba TG01 both run on Snapdragon and support TV-Out. What I think the problem is, is that the hardware is there, but HTC just haven't implemented it. Meaning that they simply have not connected the function. Which is actually a shame as this was the only thing the pushed me away from this spectacular device and choose the Omnia B7610 instead, because it is a better all round device.

You need a lot more than just processor support for TV out functionality, so the hardware is not there. Some of it is, but only 1 small part.
Exactly! That's why I was disappointed with the HD2. Seeing as Acer and Tosh both implemented the tv out functionality from the core, why didn't HTC do the same? Surely it wouldn't cost them THAT much more would it?
As far as I understand, this is a hardware related issue and not driver related? If it is driver related, I am sure one day this driver would be coded and made available in this forum.
I was palnning to video out to my car DVD entertainment touch screen device in order to be able to use google maps, opera, dictionnaries etc..
This plan will ne be feasible then...
You can use the hd2 as an usb-stick. With that function i can view movies and listen to music on my Alpine touchscreen radio.

Samsung launches official Galaxy S website!

Here the link:
http://galaxys.samsungmobile.com/
You can view the specifications and the user guide.
There the outside of the phone is explained -> no LED flash light.
hehe i love the website and the "video" nicely done!
Has anyone seen a link for a downloadable version of the Manual?
According to the spec sheet on the website, as well as DIVX and XVID the Galaxy will be able to play back h264 files in the MKV container! To the best of my knowledge, this is an absolute first for a mobile phone. As someone who watches a lot of video whilst travelling, this is fantastic news.
this will be definitely my next phone! Even if it has no flash light for the camera, but it's not an important fact for me...
And when that thing gets (hopefully) rooted, I will get rid of TouchWiz UI ;D

I can confirm: this works great! Though the tested file had variable bitrate up to 5 MBit/s and that was a bit too much for the Galaxy S. The video was played back without complaint, but it skipped frames, sometimes less, somtimes more. Still amazing. Another 720p file in an MP4-Container and fixed 1MBit video rate was flawless and stunning to watch.
The sound is also great. This tiny speaker is loud enough and not at all squeaky. Headphones still prefered, of course.

I believe this is what you're looking for?
Hasn't anybody noticed that it will ship with Flash Lite in the browser? I know it's not full Flash 10.1 like with Froyo, but still is better than nothing.
Also, reading the user manual I spotted a really interesting website: samsungdive.com
It seems that you can configure the phone to alert you when the SIM card changes, or locate the phone if you lost it, very similar to the wavesecure app. I don't know if this was available to previous samsung phones, but it seems a pretty cool addition to android, don't you think?
I'm loving even more this phone!
sounds like a pretty cool feature
It just gets better and better.
The manual also reveals that there is a TV out feature. Only PAL/NTSC via headphone jack, but better than nothing. And we still have AllShare.
Wow TV Out, I didn't spot that the first time. It's nice to be able to just plug the cable to the TV, as mine is a bit old and doesn't seem to have DLNA.
Anybody knows if you can output HD video through the headphone jack, or just standard definition?
Like I said, PAL/NTSC, which are the trusty old standard definition TV formats. The quality won't be very good also, because it is a composite signal.
Devices capable of DLNA, like media streaming boxes, are getting ever cheaper, though.
It mentions an 'optional multifunction cable' for TV out.
Erm... it seems we are not reading the same manual there. The only thing multifunctuinal in the manual is the "multifunctional jack", which is just the USB port.

Yes, the multifunction connector is a USB port, I don't deny that.
What I am saying is first on page 88 item 5 it says:-
"Ensure that the TV is on and connect your device to the
TV with a TV out cable".
The later on the following page which is page 89 item 3 of the manual it says:-
"Using an optional PC data cable, connect the multifunction jack on your device to a PC with Windows Media Player installed."
Correct, and the next step on that list is "synchronize music files". Now what have these points in common? Nothing at all.
The TV out function clearly describes the format (PAL/NTSC) and the connector (A/V, which means composite). That is an analogue connection, which is provided on the analogue headphone jack.
Does the galaxy s support x264?
Oh come on! Didn't you even read the tiniest fact sheet?

[Q] Use Nexus Q as an external amplifier?

My Nexus Q is slowly collecting dust on my entertainment center. It looks pretty, but being limited to Google Play or YouTube content only just bites. I've already got an iOS device and a receiver that supports Airplay (which quite frankly works much more reliably), so I don't have a reason to leave it plugged in beyond the novelty of it.
What I'd love to do, however, is use for the "audiophile quality" amp it supposedly has in another room with some vintage Bose 301 speakers I have and my desktop PC. Is there any way to get audio in on this thing? It's got optical audio out, would installing CM10 allow me to change that port to optical input instead? Or how about USB, would any hack or rom allow me to plug it into my PC and use it as a USB-Audio device?

The only thing I could think of would be an app that makes it a Bluetooth audio reciever. But it doesn't appear to have one. Last I tried cm10.1 the amp didn't work. Just HDMI. You could sell it

what you think about your shield?

just bought 50 inch 4k lcd tv, brand is tcl
it plays anything i tried so far (with exception of dts audio, but this is easy to convert with avidemux)
the thing is - smart tv functions is pure [email protected]
around 1 minute to start, 10 seconds to open youtube, and 30 seconds of buffering
what is most annoying is just 360-480p video with no settings to change that
so i need to buy some android box that will:
play all 1080p media smoothly
play 1080p youtube videos
run skype with external camera
allow me to run some games etc.
there is plenty of solutions but shield seems to combine decent specs, good design and reasonable price
can anyone confirm that it will work ok with external webcam (both video and microphone?)
PLEASE DELETE THIS POST... I believe the OP was complaining about the functionality in his TV.. Not the Shield
I have no issues whatsoever playing any 1080p videos from the net or from my home network.
I'm guessing you are running wireless and / or have a slow internet connection. Try putting a 1080p video on a usb stick or memory card and playing it from there.
I'm running wired gigabit and have a 100Mbs Internet speed and this box really shines, even with 1080p Game streaming through their service.
my only issues with the Shield TV are:
* It only comes with a North America-spec power adapter, with a proprietary device-side connector. I think you can change the power pins, but it only comes with an american one in the box (not really an issue if you live in north america)
* The controller is a bit rubbish
It's very fast, and it plays all the media I throw at it through Plex, although with some of the high bitrate stuff, it complains about low connection over wireless - it doesn't seem to connect via 802.11ac all the time.
The games are just your standard Android fare. Games & apps can be installed from the Play Store website if they don't show up on the built-in one. Be aware though; some of them say that they work on AndroidTV but don't actually do any such thing.
I love mine, I got it to replace an old acer revo which was running openelec.
The apps I use the most are Kodi (all in one media streaming app), Retroarch (an app which allows you to play various emulators), Youtube, Twitch, iPlayer, and Gamestream. I havent tried the subscription based game stream option that Nvidia offer as I have the majority of the games which they offer. I do use the option which allows me to stream games from my pc. This runs superbly at 1080p over homeplugs.
The device is very quiet and very fast. I also like having a headphone socket on the remote and joypad.
I would like to see some more UK based media apps on the store (4OD, 5 on demand, Sky), my Xbox One is better for this. Kodi does have addons to get around the lack of this.
The google play store does seem a bit limited for android tv at the moment.
I did have to root mine to enable me to write to the sdcard (for Retroarch).
I would highly recommend one if you want to use Kodi or Emulators.

I agree with this. In fact, I now remember this was my major reason for buying it. It emulates pretty much anything up to and including the Sega Dreamcast, but once again.. it has a pretty rubbish controller. However, it does support the XBox 360 pad if you have the wireless adapter for it, so that's an improvement, and I'm pretty sure it'll natively support any controller that Linux does - so all your USB adapters for your NES or PSX or whatever controller will work.
Gotta throw my opinion in since I've only had it for about 2 weeks now...
Its fast, and I must much better interface than what i was expecting. I bought it for primarily playing PC games from my computer and it does so without any problems at all. It even will pass through full surround sound from the games (which I was NOT expecting).
I also use KODI more than anything and it works great. I do have some sound sync issues here and there and it can be annoying to remedy. But, if you put the time in and use KODI's audio delay correctly you can fix it. (the Wiki will say to use the Shield's built in HDMI-Audio Sync feature, but it doesn't have an overlay for when you are setting the delay. So you basically have to base it entirely off the bouncing ball which doesn't help at all when you are trying to sync voices to the actors mouths. Plus, I found that 0ms works great for all audio syncing through shield (netflix, youtube, etc) and the KODI sync lets me sync JUST KODI.
I only paid $150 for mine since I got in on the controller bundle and they never sent me the controller so I got the $50 refunded. I still would recommend it at $200 though. Once the MM update comes out it will be much better for customizing the start screen.
DO IT is my short answer.
As a media player, about the only thing it lacks is Amazon Prime, though there is a workaround and rumors of official support later. I've been able to play high bitrate rips, Hi10p video, a 1440p VHS 10-bit rip, and everything else with no issues over 802.11ac. It's by far the best player I've seen for SlingTV, also.
Anything that doesn't work natively, you can just cast it to the Shield TV and you're in business (HBO Go, specifically, because Comcast is stupid).
Games work well enough as long as they have controller support. Most of the higher-end and big developer games do. There's Nvidia game stream you can test for 3 months, but I don't have any use for it, honestly. I think you can also stream games from a PC with an nVidia GPU, but I have AMD.
Basically they've built the best video player on the market, hands down. The next best thing is a full-blown HTPC, but the price and lack of a simplified UI (IMO) puts the Shield on top, again.
