Going to USA...how do I force disable Data? - Galaxy S I9000 General

I am going to the USA later this week and don't want to get stung with huge data roaming charges. Is there any way to force data to stay off, with an option to use wifi if needed? I used to use a program on my windows mobile called NODATA...
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

Try this:
1. Type *#*#4636#*#* on your dial pad
2. Select "Phone Information"
3. Press "Menu" soft key
4. Select "More"
5. Select "Disable Data on Boot"
6. Reboot
Now data should be disabled (you won't see E/3G icons in the notification bar) and you can use WiFi whenever you want.

you can use my app "data on demand" for that (in the market). i would also recommend turning settings->wireless and network->mobile networks->data roaming OFF! this always worked for me!

I was just going to post the same thing...
Don't anybof the standard system settings provide the functionality to do the same? e.g. limit to 2g only and/or turning off data updates and/or data roaming etc. ?
Will check the app out though... If you do the keypad option, how do you then reenable or does it just come back on with a reboot meaning you have to do it each time you turn the phone on...?

Setting 2G only wouldn't stop data use, only high-speed data (though that would curtail the rate at which you can accumulate it). There is a setting to not use data while roaming, which should work, though entering incorrect data in the APN settings as I think these programs do would work too.

Settings->Wireless and Network->Mobile Networks->Uncheck Data roaming
That will disable any data use on networks other than your home-network! No other settings/configs are necessary!

Good. That's what I was hoping for/assumed it may do.

this topic should be stickied

Install APNdroid. You can place a widget on the homescreen to turn on, off APNs:

Thanks guys, much appreciated!

I was wondering this also as i am due to go away, but i still want to send and receive MMS (as it is included in my allowance) whilst away. So the question is, if i choose not to have data whilst roaming will this also stop MMS as this is also data? I have a suspicion that it would, so, would the only other option be to just put some bogus APN settings in for internet but keep my MMS settings as it should be? Any ideas? Thanks a lot.

Don't know why people are going into this vast overkill....
Just go into your settings, wireless networks, ensure "Enable data while roaming" is unchecked. In fact, it will be unchecked by default, at least in the Bell rom.
This setting works perfectly (I just went to the US this past weekend), so i see no reason to screw around with the APN or reboot the phone or install other hacky apps. If this box is unchecked the instant you switch to roaming your data is disabled.

[Q] Simple software to automatically disable GPRS/UMTS data while roaming?

Hi out there,
searching for a while now. Found nothing, but CommMgrPro which is way to much.
I search for a simple software to automatically disable GPRS/UMTS data while roaming and enable it back when logged into my provider again.
Would be nice to have more than one "home" provider.
Any hints? Thanks and happy holidays.
the simplest way is change your mobile while roaming
i was surprised that my htc touchpro activate
data communication automatically while i
had disactivated data com before.
Modaco NoData
Thanks. At least a simple way to enable and disable.
My problem is that i live close to the boarder (germany/france) and that i flip into roaming here really fast.
An automatic solution is needed very urgend.
Locking to my provider is ok, but the htc asks me what provider to join, when back.
All that sucks.
I cant believe that there is no solution.
Is CommMgrPro able to handle that?
Nobody?
Nobody else who got this problem and nobody who got a solution?
Is CommMgrPro able to handle that? The documentation is bad.

Maybe you can PM danielherrero.
He's the creator of CommMgrPro.
I am very interested in this as well - and from my searching seems a lot of others would be interested in an automated system.
My network provider automatically roams to another specific provider when in a non-coverage area (small pockets within metro areas and rural). The problem is that the data cost when roaming is ridiculous. I use Push Email for work and while on roaming want GPRS access to be disabled until I am connected back with my provider.
I've installed NoData by MoDaCo which is good but this requires the user to remember to enable/disable GPRS.
*EDIT*
I found exactly what I needed after a more searching - Wombat's PhoneRoam Script (Stay Connected to High Speed Networks Only). Will see whether it does the job

I agree to have more that only one network provider. Here in Belgium we can subscribe to Vodafone passport that enable to use "free" of charge the data on any Vodafone network, but when I go in France it switch to other provider and in that case my push mail is expensive... I'm also in the boarder of France.
So basicaly :
1/ A very very simple prg that disable the data automatically if roaming.
2/ A version 2 that would put all permited network provider even if roaming.
Thanks
This thing exists for the iPhone. Its a simple switch in the interface.
You can select "Data-Roaming" on/off, thats all.
Where is it in WM?

Modaco is fine but when you are at the border is quite difficult to follow your carrier and disable data time by time...or even remember you are switching to another country after few km and you always have one app trying to connect (Tomtom, weather, opening a mail...)
Modaco it's what I use actually but let me forget stressing an unwanted roaming data connection...
a+
Used NoData and application is still able to connect...
Hi,
I switched off all data connections in the registry (using frost Advanced Config, than also tried NoData) and in general windows mobile apps aren't able to connect... but I have a one third party application, which is somehow able to ignore that and connect even when the data connection is toggled to DISABLED...
Any ideas how to REALLY disable data connections (for roaming)...
here is the automatic solution http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=503131
this will automatically disable ALL data in roaming and re-enable under home provider without any user configuration - nothing to toggle

Disable Data and stay off!

I do not have Data on my contract (orange) and am quite happy using Wifi at home and work, but I find my phone likes to switch over when it feels like it to HSDPA etc.
In options I switch data to off but my phone likes to overide this! I have to race to switch it off to avoid an enhanced monthly bill!
Does anyone know how to stop this?
Thanks
Your phone will use which ever is giving the best signal - I would imagine wifi by default...
Or Try app like NoDate
omg, this is the zillion time when somebody ask that question
why don't you use the search option? as somebody said, "search is your friend".
ok, i will write here what can you do, beside use nodata or other application
maybe a mod can add it to wiki...
so:
settings-connections-connections-advanced-select networks
go to "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet..."
on the pop up menu chose each option that includes your phone network operator (in my case is Orange and one of the options looks like "Orange Internet") - edit - proxy settings and here uncheck the box "This network connects to the Internet"
repeat the procedure for each option that has your operator name included
a soft reset may be recomended but not absolutely necessary!
after that the network icon (G or E or whatever) will be gray and no data transmission will be allowed. if it is not grey, then your settings are not right.
et voila! There you are!
good luck!

Turn off data roaming

Hi!
Going abroad and dont want to risk a huge data roaming-bill. Is there any way to turn off data roaming? Preferrably Wifi would still work, but if that's not possible then all data off.
HD Tweak is a nice little application which includes an option to disable data connections all together. I'm pretty sure this option will prevent you recieving data even if you tried to (ie not just background tasks) but will still allow wi-fi to work.
NoData

You might want to give "NoData" a go. This very small application (.cab) install creates an icon called NoData in programs. If you select this it runs the small app and asks what data connection you want to disable or re-enable.
It is ideal for what you want and many use it. Take a look at Paul's work here on Modaco (another good WM site): http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility-nodata/

Deactivate data connection on HD2

On my Diamond, I had a handy little application called NoData which deactivated data connections so that I didn't get charged for using mobile internet by mistake.
Is there any way to do the same thing on the HD2?
Thx.
I am also looking for an app that can do this.
I'm off abroad in a couple of weeks and I am already having nightmares about the bill I may have when I return if I can't find a way to deactivate the data!

Just use the same app
Grtz,
Degake
there is a app out there called...................nodata
oh, are you sure it works on the HD2?
nodata works fine but i use bsb tweaks to disable data connections manually before crossing the border so i can enable it just in case
Since I have no data plan with my carrier i disable connections not referring to WIFI alltogether, I just go to Settings, connections, menu, connections, advanced, select network, and put "work network" (or something, I have it in italian) to both.

there is a vey simple way to deactivate the data connection: long press the on/off key and you will get a little menu: one of the menu items is deactivate data connection. Press it and it's done.

That terminates it, but it doesn't stop it coming back on when an app tries to use it.
Is there a reason that no-one has suggested airplane mode?
no cab needed, the answer is on the HTC site:
How do I disable my 3G/GPRS Data Connection?
Follow the steps below to ensure that your phone will never connect to a GPRS/3G Data Connection.
1. Go to Start > Settings > Menu > All Settings > Connections > Connections
2. Tap Add a new modem connection > then under Select a modem, select Celluar Line (GPRS) > Name the Connection "Offline" >Tap Next.
3. In the Access point name text box input "Offline" and tap Next.
4. On the next page tap Finish.
5. On the second Connections Menu, tap Manage existing connections and select "Offline" then click OK.
Re-enable the data connection if you want to connect to the internet via 3g/Edge.
1. From the home screen, slide to the Settings tab, Wireless Controls > Data Connection.
2. Select your Country and Operator
3. Tap OK.
4. On the subsequent screen, tap Yes.
The phone will automatically configure itself with the appropriate settings.
Note: When disabling the connection in this way, your phone may report errors when trying to connect to "Offline." The error is caused by the phone being unable to connect to a data source due to the settings, and is normal.

This is what i want to know. How can we auto disconnect data connection after certain period of time. For example if i set up my device to update weather every hour using EDGE, it wont disconnect automatically but i want it to auto disconnect once the weather is updated regardless of i notice it or not. How do we achieve that?

Hey thanks man!!!
That was really helpful!!!
quicksettings app is nice to on/off 3G
I've tried varies APN apps and Quick Settings.
Some work some don't. Quick settings stops mobile data but quite often the connection would not re-establish when I turned it back on.
Now I use quick settings to quickly get the the APN list and select an APN I created that can't connect.
