Data and Voice at same time on Samsung Vibrant - Vibrant General

Has anyone had success in being on the phone using voice, and browsing the internet, using data, at the same time on the Samsung Vibrant, with T-Mobile?
I was able to perform this most of the time with my HTC HD2, with T-Mobile.
I searched, and can't really find an exact answer.

It worked but i was using wifi
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

Yeah, mine probably works on Wifi, but I am talking about mobile data, such as 3G. My HD2 did this most of the time.

If you are on 3G then yes you can.

This really only works well with a fairly strong 3G signal. Otherwise you may drop to 2G during the call and only be able to access data over wifi.

It works for me some times. Each
time I try I get different results some slow some fast or not at all. I am in the same place so its not my location. Its odd u was tempted to post a similar question.

Yes, I can use google maps, drive my car, and talk on the bluetooth all at the same time. The Vibrant works great. Only when it drops to Edge speeds, then ya lose the google maps, but the call keeps going.

Mine works as well, I've had my laptop tethered several times downloading large files, and answer a call and it keeps downloading no problem. I haven't noticed if if it's just a 2g/3g thing though as it usually stays on 3g for me most of the time.

I have no probelm doing voice and data both wifi and 3g.

wtf is up with ppl and the HD2.....

wired tether+phone calls

I just found out today that you can be tethered to your PC and still receive and make phone calls. This is especially useful to me because I dont have internet service but use tethering for my only PC service.
edit: sorry the only reason it worked was because Hulu was buffered. I had almost a 10 min conversation while watchin tho so I was excited, but then as I thought more about it I realized it was not possable. Sorry if I got anyone hopes up.
dang you man!!!
I dont know if this is new or not, but with my previous phone (hero) i was not able to use MAPS, GPS while talking on the phone. I drove the other days using MAPS and I was talking on the phone and did not lose GPS directions.
Is that something new? Can someone confirm, cuz as far as I know, Maps uses your 3G to get directions.
It either cached its data or your are on 4g

Web browsing/data while on a call

I can usually browse the web and use data while I'm on a phone call.
Tonight I tried it and had no data connection until disconnecting the voice call. Can anyone who has not installed the OTA verify that it is still working? Or anyone with the OTA? Maybe I'm just crazy and am remembering something that didn't happen? No, I'm sure I could do both before.
I would hate to lose it this feature.

Works for me.. I've heard people say this happend before the update too, but I've never had any issues with it. Best thing to do is call tmobile to help you. It might have something to do with a weak signal, or not enough signal to handle both at the same time.
Have you tried using wifi calling and then browse the web through your wifi? That would prove it was somehow related to network signal.

My net won't work on Edge during a call, and is kind of laggy on 3G.

U can only use data and voice with 3g/4g.
Edge uses the same stream as voice so you cant do both on edga data.
But I always use data and voice, mainly when looking up addresses or phone numbers

So maybe it was because I was on an Edge only network at the time of the phone call? I'll have to experiment more. To tell the truth I hardly make any phone calls with my cell phone.
This was all during a 35 minute trip across town so it's hard to believe it's on Edge the entire time since I have really good H access around town.
I'll call T-Mobile soon if it doesn't fix itself.
I've also been using a SIM that came with my Sidekick which was two phones ago. Going to also ask them if I am on the best web plan.
Thanks for the help.

I have noticed this problem on my HD2 for a while now. I am sitting on a nice 3G signal and the moment a voice call connects, my data connection dies. it does eventually drop to Edge or GPRS but bounces back the instant I'm off my call. it's really consistent as in the moment I connect, it goes.
I've seen this behavior on both my Windows and Android builds on my HD2.
I'm starting to think this is either a hardware issue or perhaps a greater T-Mobile one.
Any thoughts?

I'm pretty sure now it was because I was on Edge. I've been able to use web while talking just fine recently.

T-mobile's network took a dump

Anyone else having issues with T-Mobiles network? I can't download anything, stopped getting FB stuff, Twitter doesn't work.

I switch apns all the time. In quicksettings I use the apn switch but leave it on apn.droid instead of disabled (which actually DOES disable it) if I switch to apn.droid then it actually changes the way I connect to tmo... epc.tmobile.apndroid.com...(instead of epc.tmobile.com) I swear I get faster speeds.

This happens to me on jl5. Didn't happen on ji6. It will still have bars, just no data. I have to switch to airplane mode and then back to get it working again. Happens a couple times a day.

That's odd. I've had JL5 since a few days after release and haven't had a single issue with data until today. I see full bars, data activity doesn't do anything except the green "out" arrow flashes but nothing comes in. I just disabled Data network and re-enabled it and now it's worked fine..
Please use proper language when making a thread. I modified the title of this thread because of it. Thanks.
I have similar happen on JL5, after a day or two (or an unknown set of actions). I will no longer be able to receive calls, but will get the VM alerts and be able to dial out. Data connection will then be hit/miss. I put the phone in airplane mode and take it off airplane mode and it works again.

Yeah, its a known froyo bug,it was even brought up several times in google's forum for the nexus one. it wasn't an issue in 2.1,but 2.2 (pretty much every build I've ever used on the G1,N1,vibrant,HD2,and Intercept) has the issue.
i think my phone's radio is broken.. now it doesnt switch between edge and 3G anymore.. stays on 3G
but download speed is really slow..painfully slow.. i was actually happy to get 3G in my room, but it's actually broken? LOL
i installed the signal app by imperial.. it stays on H - 93 dbm with the 3G symbol on the signal bar and consistent 3/4 bars.. what the hell..
hmmm..
maybe tmo 3g coverage has gotten better? but download speed is slow.. my phone may be broken.. ughhh
Check to see if you have it wcdma only. Settings->wireless networks->mobile network. It should be on wcdma/GSM (auto).

This also happens to me, I'm at JL5. Sometimes when using 3g my speed is lower than 100 kbps. I have to reconnect to make it work.

they dont switch anymore.. from what i have observed, it stuck on the 3G symbol, but the actual download speed does switch between edge and 3g.. someitmes rendering a page is faster and sometimes it's slow..

im using the stock j16.. i already reset my phone, even reverted to stock jfd and flash via kies last night.. same issue
i haven't even dropped my phone at all.. not a bad drop at least..
I have the same problem on JL5. I just flashed Nero V3 this weekend as my first Froyo rom and I see today I cannot get online at work where 3G is iffy. If i switch it manually to GSM, then data works.
I actually flashed a custom rom hoping to fix an issue like this.
Back on stock my network data just stopped while browsing web pages or anything really. It would give the outgoing arrows but nothing would come back. After about 30 minutes or so it would start working again for a while.
Flashed to nero but it's still as prevalent as ever (maybe for a different reason now lol). Not sure if it's the phone or Tmo's network anymore, but it's not too big of an issue for me so I just have to remember to activate wifi if I need constant data for any period.
I have it set to GSM only because I don't live in a 3G area...

[Q] Simple mobile slow data

I hope Im posting in the right place.
Im on simple mobile.
I have htc g2. i unrooted it with gfree .5.
I have vision ginerbread 3.3
IM having VERY hard time getting anything over like 40kb/s
I dont know what to do. I cant get on youtube, or even download an app from market without getting an info window that tells me something is wrong with my connection.
i have android version 2.3.3
baseband version is 12.22.60.09_26.02.01.15
kerner version is 2.6.32.28-cyanogenmod
mod version is cyanogenmod-7.0.2-vision
build number gri40
Could someone with simple mobile give me advice? i keep reading how you guys are getting 1.5mb/s and i cant even reach 100kb/s lol
thanks in advance
Are you on 4g hspa+? Did you change your apn settings?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
ever since CM7 7.0.2 i have not been able to connect to HSPA either, I have tryed new roms but no luck. I just ordered a new one under warranty.
hi, i did change my apn settings. but its still super slow.
its going to be your radio then, mine had the same issue, until i updated the radio, my speeds were so slow, then hspa+ finally kicked in and now i get about 2Mbps to 6Mbps
I have simplemobile as well, purchased it for work (to tether in a pinch) and while I am not exactly "happy" with the service + phone, I guess its passable.
I get HSPA as well, using Ultimate Droid + the .16 radio (I've tried every single one, this is the best) I get 2-6mbps download with this combo and simplemobile. My biggest issue is the horrible reception and the data dropouts for no reason. I take public transportation and trains for my job and can never hold a tether for longer then 5-10 mins if I am moving. Also for some reason I am unable to use voice and data at the same time, as well as the annoying issue of hanging up a voice call and having what seems like the radio "rebooting" ie: going to zero bars, dropping the data connection and 5 seconds later getting a radio lock again.
I have finally gotten good APN settings to enable me to use hspa as well as MMS (finally after 3 months i have mms). I would be happy to share if needed.
that be awesome!
btw, how do i get an .16 radio, i looked around a bit and couldnt find what i was looking for.
thanks
Share your settings, I would like to compare

me too. im resetting to 26.04.02.17
i do have ril files, but i cant find a way to put/flash them into my phone.
anyways, i get only 40kbs on 4 bar edge network. i heard it should be more.
my settings are 216.155.165.50 and 8080
what do u guys think?
ill be willing to donate $10 (to whomever or developer, if its allowed) if i can get this thing fixed. ive been working on it for like 3 days now with no success
I get about 2Mbps down and 600kbps up on hspa not sure if its 3g or 4g I was able to hit 6Mbps at 3 in the morning
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
Seriously? Even on 3g it shouldnt be sos slow i feel like.
could you guys who have g2 and simple mobile post your "about phone" stats so i could compare? Cause this is what i did. i unrooted. than rooted back, upgrade to version .17, changed apn settings (under tmobile data) to simple (i didnt create new simple apn setting). and im still getting like 30kb/s on edge or like 40kb/s on 3g
Hmm go to the development section and use the ril, radio Matcher

Int'l Note with Straight Talk BYOD - how STABLE is your DATA connection?

A quick background:
- I have an International Note - factory unlocked
- I signed up with Straight Talk few days ago - ordered the AT&T SIM Card
- Voice, text messaging and MMS works
- I am in Northern California
Problem is, the data connection is very UNSTABLE. I will have full bar, can browse the web and then.... BOOM! Suddenly no data, even though my phone show 3G and full bar. The only fix? Turn ON Airplane Mode, Turn it OFF or REBOOT, which is clunky and time consuming at best, especially when you are out and about.
This is not just an annoyance, but makes the phone almost unusable since I need data for my Exchange email, Google Navigation, etc. I DO NOT use the Note for tethering.
My APN is as folllow:
APN 1...
Name: Internet
APN: att.mvno
APN type: internet
APN type: default
APN 2...
Name: MMS
APN: att.mvno
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: proxy.mvno.tracfone.com
MMS port: 80
APN type: mms
Fast Dormancy: Disabled
For those who use Straight Talk, could you tell me:
1). If you experiences the above
2). Where you are at
3). What APN do you use
4). Do you enable "Fast Dormancy"?
I am trying to figure it out if this is my Note or just ST flaking in my area.
I had the same problem with fast dormancy disabled so ok re-enabled it and it has been fine since.

Same issues here with an att sim and tried both single apn settings that came with straight talk and the two separate ones as you have. Also tried both fast dormancy enabled and disabled with same sketchy results. My location is Milwaukee, WI. Seems prone to disconnect right right after I connect to the market. Turning on and off the data connection re-establishes the connection though.

I used to have the OP's issue constantly here in Southern California too until I re-enabled Fast Dormancy and it's been pretty good since for me as well. Also have better luck with the 2 separate APN's that you're using.

That's interesting... it seems that I have to ENABLE Fast Dormancy for a stable data connection. I will try that and will update here.
I wonder if it has something to do with which tower I am connecting to...
Its really odd because everywhere I read AT&T doesnt support fast dormancy..
I still think its something at&t does to prepaid because my gf's SGS2 doesnt have that problem and I dont seem to notice it when I used her sim card..I'm on ICS and theres no way to turn fast dormancy off or on.

Yeah, I was thinking maybe some areas had upgraded equipment that supports it or something? Like you one of the first things I did was disable it per the instructions in the ST thread and never tried with it enabled until recently just out of curiosity.

I'm in the sacramento area, using the same settings with great results. Occasionally I have to toggle data, maybe once every two weeks, but not too inconvenient.

I turned ON Fast Dormancy and I was getting even unstable data, so I turned it OFF.
I was driving to another city today for lunch and I noticed my data connection was pretty stable. I had been doing a lot of testing: Google Maps, Email, Pulse News app, etc.
However, one thing is consistent: everytime I open Android Market (Google Play now), it will load UP until where I want to DOWNLOAD an APP (for testing - small apps - less than 2 Mb), the data connection shuts off....same problem as what I posted above.
I tried doing so about 4 times in 3 different location: home, work and lunch place, each location is about 5 miles apart. Same results.
Is Straight Talk monitoring and BLOCKING app download?
I'm using straight talk on my gf's S2 with tethering and its blazing fast (6 Mbps down and 1.1 Mbps up) and stable right now. Although I'm in Michigan atm (heading to California tomorrow). I plan to switch from AT&T's price gouging plan to straight talk when I get back so I'll let you guys know how it is in Modesto.
I have the same issue with market and sporadically, otherwise.
I don't think this is a straight talk thing. It doesn't make sense.

Even when my data connection used to be flaky with Fast Dormancy disabled before I re-enabled it, I was always able to install & update apps from the Market. The weird thing is that it was pretty much only NON-Google apps that gave me problems with the data dropping out.
I would call ST Tech Support tomorrow if I were you and see if they can check your account and stuff.

I am in Northern California as well, Fremont to be exact. I have not noticed any problems with data while out and about here. I use the exact setting as posted in post 1 in this thread.
While at home, I just turned off wifi, and tried to connect to the Play store, No Connection - Retry. So I turned on/off Flight Mode, went back to the Play store, and was able to download a couple of things no problem.
This is pretty the same thing that would happen to me on my last Android phone, so maybe it is more of a Android thing than it is a Straight Talk thing.
Other than this, my Straight Talk data connection seems to be fine when I'm out and about.

Thanks for the info. So it seems more of Android OS problem.
The thing that intrigued me is that this issue doesn't happen to my 3 other Android phone, which are running on At&t, Verizon and Virgin Mobile.

Same here. I've been using nothing but Android since the G1 and I've never had these issues until the Note on ST, so I don't think that it's an Android OS issue UNLESS Samsung has a bug in the OS on the Note.
When I have time I'll do a search in the Galaxy Nexus forum or something to see if there are any problems with people on ST there...

W/ that said I installed the Chinese ICS Leak when it first came out and I had worse signals than on the GB rom's. Could have been the radio I flashed.
