anyone going to or considering dell streak? - EVO 4G General

So dell streak is now available in the US, any evo users been able to play with one (uk version been out a while) or considering switching?

Nope under contract. Its another 9 months before I can get another phone.

The Dell Streak is very enticing, I would love to see one and play around with it for a while. The two drawback in my mind are pocket-ability and that it's only running Android 1.6. The UK version is on 2.1, so there is good hope they'll have 2.1 updates for the US version shortly.
In conclusion, I don't see myself trading the HTC Evo in for a Dell Streak, however, I'm intrigued by it's hardware. HTC Evo makes for a well rounded, every day device and I see potential issues with the Dell Streak making it as an every day use device/cell phone.

Dell Streak

Hi there,
Jst got my Streak on Friday. It's totally amazing, you won't be dissapointed when you get one. There is only slight problem in that it's doesn't play AVI files, if it did then it would be 10/10
Does anyone know of an AVI player for Android
Many thanks and go out and get a streak!
yxplayer plays avi, but not very well and it costs money. There is also a chinese one that plays avi, but its really too buggy right now and rarely actually works. Are there any phones that can play high quality AVI files?
I think your best option right now is to convert to MP4 format.
PS: Go here for an active Streak forum! Hopefully XDA will get a dedicated forum soon!
Many thanks
Hi there thanks for the info,
I thought that converting them to MP4 might be the only answer, shame as I've always been a Windows phone user and never had the avi problem. But then been waiting n waiting on the streak and decided to take the jump to Android. Have to say LOVE IT! you have to love the STREAK.
YOu must have left the link of to the Streak thread, off to look for it.
Once again many thanks

Congrats! I'm a big fan of the Streak =)

Yes please. The phone was just released and just in the UK and as such wont be extremely popular until its released more worldwide. Already though it has been rooted and it would be nice to have a forum here for that information along with rom releases.
+1 for this please !
Very interested in this phone myself. Would love to see a section for it please.
Its a mighty thing, but needs the 2.1 or 2.2 update to be fully realised. This will happen soon andi cant wait for it.
Here it is next to an HD2, its big, but still pocket friendly..ish.
Its the size that I'm interested in. I'm partially sighted and the HTC Touch Pro is to small for all it can do I think.
Its either this the Desire of an iPhone next.
Forget the iPhone then. The new one may have a huge resolution, but the screen is puny.
The Dell screen is about the same size as an entire HD2 or Evo. Its very big and essy to read.
Its ok in daylight, but no better than most LCDs id say.
The 3GS iPhone is OK, I liked the clarity of the screen and it works good in daylight. Mate has a Desire and says you can't see anything in sunny light on the screen.
I've not seen a Dell in the flesh yet.
Were can I buy the handset without plan?

This is a gsm phone correct? I bought my htc hd2 in the uk and use it on ATT in the USA. Will this work the same?

yes. Streak will be released in US next both ( ATT version)
I don't want to buy the dell Streak from ATT. I like being carrier independent. I like using my MIFI from verizon for my internet.
Any smart phone bought from ATT forces a ATT data plan on the user. When I buy a non carrier GSM phone I can just slip in the sim card and go.
My MIFI from verizon is a WIFI device. This enables my phone for data, and lets me use it for many other uses.
The price differential is $9.00 a month.
So where can I buy the Dell Streak carrier independent?
Dell will be selling a unlocked version on it's web site soon.
Yes I love my dell streak had it for a week now and ever since i had it i haven't used my 3gs much apart as an ipod. I think its still very early stages and hope dell can push some updates out as soon as possible.
I believe only running froyo 2.2 will do it any street justice. It will be complete after that.
I'm thinking about dell streak can it be unlocked easily un the UK? Plus ant idea how much dell will be selling unlocked version?

Dell Streak not available in the US...

...buy why?
I've been following the Streak for as long as its been rumored, and I haven't seen this brought up.
Why do you guys think that Dell decided to go to the UK first, and so much earlier, than in the US? Seems weird for a US-based tech company to release what looks to be a very high-profile device outside of the US, so much earlier, and not even in a comparably-sized market (if they released in "Europe" first that might make SOME sense...but in the UK only?)
The ONLY thing I could come up with is that they are using the UK as a test market, either for the hardware itself, or for their incarnation of Android. Perhaps an update to 2.1 on the US launch? Though that is rumored to be coming in January 2011, not on launch date.
Any other theories/facts out there?
I have a Streak and it is very good! I don't know why they released in the UK first, but I am pleased it did.
When it gets to the US it'll only increase the follwoing and developments will rocket. So I for one am looking forward to it too.

2Gb per month? On O2 (and Vodafone - dunno about the rest) we get 500mb a month for the £5 a month data plan. Then another £5 per 500mb thereafter.

I personally think that Dell is just way behind with their mobile phone department, being completely new to the game. 02 was probably the first real and successful partner that decided to pair up with Dell. Considering they are so hush-hush about the US release it makes me think the only reason for such a delayed launch is a delay in partnership. Or it could be because whoever their US partnership is has to wait until a previous contract is up. Or it could possibly be that nobody in the US wanted to partner with Dell so they decided to release it in the UK, to see potential interest/outcome around the world. Rumor has been going around that the US maybe released with 2.2, which wouldn't matter. Software is always upgradeable, hardware (which I think will be the exact same as the UK models and beta models) is not.
As for the Beta Streak's (from Texas), what an absolute joke. Dell has done a terrible terrible job at keeping their US customer's happy or in the 'know' thus far. And then once they decide to give it some publicity, it is to such a wide ranged age group that is mostly physically active. Now I am not saying most competent high-end phone owners are not active, I am just saying that most do not run races. (I would for a free Streak!)
Considering they have a page on their store for the coming-soon 'Aero', why not do the same for the Streak?
And if it is due to none of the above, then maybe the US is in for a big surprise with their model. But I highly doubt that. Everyone else currently with a Streak would be extremely upset (I know I would).
.
dell streak i have had for 2week now its the most awesome device i have ever had the chance to get my mutty paws on and i have had alot of devices with froyo 2.2 this will be unstopable and did you know there is a micro sd card x 2 in this device yes the other one is hdden inside to instal apps on 2gb and can be chnged to a 32gb if pleased plusa another 32gb external how about that then.
I think you should change your plan my friend, I get 3gb per month and unlimited wifi at the cloud with o2 for £15 per month although this is the data only plan.

That statement is damning. Six months ago (late 2009/early 2010), the hardware in the "Dell Mini 5" (Streak) was cutting-edge, top-of-the-line. If they'd released then, they'd have had the fastest smartphone in the world. Now, we have the EVO, Nexus One, Incredible, DroidX, Captivate (in a week), iPhone 4, etc. The Dell Streak will be nothing more than your average high-end smartphone in a controversial form-factor, with an antiquated operating system.
I dunno, we'll see what I do. I was all-in for the Streak, because I really want the form-factor (larger screen, HDMI-out on the side for docking) and for Dell selling it unlocked (I don't want to buy through a carrier, or even have a contract, other than a month-to-month with T-Mobile or something), but the Streak is already looking pretty long in the tooth, and it hasn't even been released yet.
I think Dell really messed up on this one.
I think the worst of all is that you have this VERY passionate base of hardcore tech enthusiasts who really want this phone in the US, then Dell turns around, releases this phone in the UK, and is absolute silent about the plan for the US.
If they had any brains (which I really question at this point), they'd go to GDGT.com or something like that, find every person who has the Streak listed as a device they want, and ship them out. As of this moment, that is only 208 people. At $500 retail (though probably more like $300 at-cost), that's only about $100,000. I think Dell can afford that, and the good-will that it would build, from these extremely passionate users who will then go out and convince all of their friends, families, and others to buy this device, would more than recoup the cost.
Oh well. Over at StreakSmart, a LOT of people are looking at getting the Captivate now (or something else), and I have to say, while I was locked in for the Dell Streak, I'm going to be keeping my options open now. Every week that passes by, that 1GHz Snapdragon hardware set is getting older, more cool phones come out, and they have better versions of Android. It's going to be hard to seriously say "Dude...I'm gettin' a Dell!" too much longer...

Aye, I need the talk plan as much as I do the data. In any case, I took the Streak back - very little media codec support, shoddy audio quality, and lackluster graphics power eventually won over the 5in screen... I'm off to get a Galaxy S from either T-Mobile (coverage dependent) or Three, if Three get their fingers out of their ar$es and make the Galaxy S available.

Crap, you better move over to the Captivate forum ASAP! For some reason, making any decision to go against the Streak here will get you flamed big time! I haven't seen that type of behavior on this board before so I was left scratching my head when I made the same decision.
As long as you take a balanced look at it the I don't think it should be flame worthy, but I know what you mean.
Apologies for the thread hijack as well - but it's not like there's a specific question being asked here.
Anyhow, I did really like the Streak for what it was, it's just that it didn't live up to the expectations of what I needed from it. FLAC support and decent audio quality is very important to me; the click and low level hiss in the background when the Streak played any audio was something I just couldn't live with.
I'll miss 5in of screen space, it must be said. Browsing on the Streak was a great experience, but seeing Quake 3 and the newer games coming out on the Galaxy, as well as integrated HW decoding of the major codecs (decoding 1080p on the fly? crikey!) are just another nail in the coffin.
Oh, and £54 for a dock so I can have HDMI out, and £25 for a USB charging cable? That's just rude.
Unfortunately those are things we haven't been able to compare here in the US. We have to rely on reviews until we can get them in hand. I'm sure that if I get both units in hand and the Dell strikes me as more usable, I'll buy it. I'm definitely going to be more critical of the Streak now that the Captivate will be out at the same time.

For better or worse people are emotionally invested in their purchases so they take it personally when you say "F#ck Dell and their stupid Streak" like you did in the other thread, hence the flaming.

Still worth buying?

With Gingerbread and the new dual core CPUs on the horizon is it worth it at this point in time to invest $600 to buy a Streak? I really love the idea of the large screen, but there are even rumors of dell's successor to the Streak (Opus One) with a dual core snapdragon and higher res screen on the way. I'm looking for peoples opinion, should I wait or go for the current Streak?

I'm in the same boat and have the same question. I'll probably be using a more camera orientated phone but will probably wifi tether so I'm looking for a tablet to carry around. Galaxy tab and what nots seem nice but I like how the streak is a smaller size and easier to carry around. So is it worth it? Or is there something better for the price?
There is always something better coming on the horizon and like anything in tech, it is old news once you have bought it.
What you have to ask yourself is will the tech that is around now suit your needs and if so, buy it now. By the time those specs arrive in the shops, something better will be on the cards.
Did the 2.2 update bump the WiFi from G to N? (Otherwise, no, it's not, IMHO.)
Agreed 100% Once I started using this thing, my X10 looked like a mini. Even with the 4" screen.

It's not worth buying a new one as it's 5 months old (if that makes any sense).
Why don't you buy a used one at $430, then it's worth it.
Can you stand to wait longer? I would wait it out, depending on your situation.
The Streak has been out around 5 months, and 5 months is a LONG time in tech and CES is right around the corner.

Sure. If you don't mind waiting a ~year for the device, you can wait.
(It's been over 10 months from the initial Dell Mini5 rumors to the actual device available on the market.)
Best buy in U.S has it for $100 this week. You could always try it for up to 30 days, then return it after you find out whats in store for CES.

This is not true.
Dell completed their 2.2 on August 30, 2010.
I purchased my Streak on October 1st (This was the first day it came out here in Australia) and the first thing i did was update to official 2.2 in the car on the way home.
The update is completely OTA and painless.
If you haven't got the update it is probably because you bought your streak carrier locked on a contract, therefore the bottleneck for receiving updates is the carrier not Dell.

Very true. I got mine, as well, and the update was available right off the bat. It was turn it on and "update available!" lol. I love the streak. It's very usable still. Battery life is way better than my iphone 4, and the screen is awesome (I just need apps to be able to make text larger! Because as is it's very tiny!) I think the Dell Streak is great ^^ Camera sucks tho. It's got HORRIBLE shutter speeds.
Yup, Jump on ebay and get yourself one cheaper then $500. I got mine used for $450 and the guy sent me Dells invoice and I have the warrenty information and all. So be cautious as to who you by from.

Carriers, especially At&t are holding the streak back.

Same old blah blah, carriers are bad/holding back android/adding bloat/etc.
I just got my hands on a decrypted 339 update, did anyone notice that it was android 2.2.1? With it being launched simultaniously with 340 it wasn't given much attention since At&t users are more vocal than rogers users (or something)
Breakdown:
Oct 22 -> 305 (Unlocked 2.2)
Feb 8 -> 340 (at&t 2.2)
Feb 10 -> 339 (Rogers 2.2.1)
Feb 11 -> 341 (AWS 2.2.2)
---
Feb 21 -> 344 (Softbank 2.2.1)
The breakdown pretty much explains itself. It took months for 340 to come out and it didnt get 2.2.1. 2.2.1 and 2.2.2 are stability/security updates, not feature updates. So it matters which you have.
The biggest mistake Dell made with streak release was to have it tied to ATT in US.
I am an ATT user , but just hated how ATT went about it . Its not even available in their website...
My guess is that they are still testing to see if they will offer it through their portal/site. I'm with att also.... well until May 15, 2011 when the legacy/old blue side (att wireless mmode) gets cut for the 4g network when it goes live.

Carriers such as AT&T are well known by that, they cripple phones and hold them back. They do the same even with the iphone.
Carriers cripple, hold back the potential of phones, in hopes that you will buy into their "this new model fixes that" BS. So far, it appears the masses are buying into it. iPhone, iPhone2,3,4,5
Until Google puts it foot down, and controls the releases of software, it will continue.
Dell deserves the brunt of the blame for availability of this device. Apparently they think they can sell smartphones direct from their website.
Are you really going to basically blame each carrier for the Streaks shortcomings? Dell doesnt have experience in the the smartphone game. Isn't that the bigger issue?
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
I agree the problem lies with Dell as well.
Sure, ATT isn't helping things, what with the ATT stores not even knowing this thing exists... but Dell marketing is almost non existent.
Getting past the fact that they call it a tablet and market it as a tablet and then do nothing to raise consumer's awareness of its existence, they really need to market it as a phone. And, they need to actually pop a buck or two to that end.
I've sold at least 5 of these things just using it in the last 3 months day to day. And, like all of the other Streak users, I'm sure, I get no end of "is that your phone?" comments or "wow that's big". No one knows this thing exists. Heck, I'm a phone geek from way back, and until my girlfriend found it at Best Buy I didn't know it existed and we almost ended up with WinMo7 phones.
Dell needs to pick it up on the marketing side of things. If they do, ATT will be forced to acknowledge its existence and support will increase.
If you go into the bestbuy mobile in our mall, the streak is up front with the tablets and not in the att section of phones.

Will the AWS 2.2.2 work with an AT&T Streak?
I recently purchased and received my Dell Streak through AmazonWireless. I recently updated to the AT&T 2.2
Currently, I have:

2.2
Baseband Version
GAUSB1A134031-US
Kernel Version
2.6.32.9-perf
OEM Version
GAUSB1A134031

I am curious if the new version AWS 2.2.2 is worth loading, or if I should hold out. Based on what I've read, AWS 2.2.2 is generally available, but is not being published to AT&T subscribers (and others). Is that correct?

I'd get Mom to switch upgrades.
In the UK, O2 would not even sell the display model in my local store. Thankfully they had a few left through the website.
who knows... i just ordered 4 last week without an issue. They are back to their original prices... I think they have started to pick up steam with froyo. You will probably still see them for the next 3-6 months.
I will hold on to mine as long as I can. Removing all the junk and keeping it lite with 354 has me very very happy. I was playing with a thunderbolt and it is so clunky compared to my streak.

Relavance of streak
Have been using the dell streak for the last six months.
I feel that it is an ideal combination of portability and functionality.
The froyo 2.2.2 is great to use.My device is rooted. Love the smooth as silk functionality. I feel that the 1ghz processor is good enough for most of the current requirements. A dual core processor, though, nice to have, is not an imperative need. I do not foresee any "essential" application currently available or likely to be available which needs dual core power and I would much rather watch a 1080p video on a larger screen.
---
I may be naive about the upgrade process but I'm not sure how you would upgrade to the Streak. You cannot buy the Streak directly from AT&T and I thought you had to go to AT&T for an upgrade. If I'm wrong about then I stand corrected.
There was a leaked timeline from Dell about there Streaky products and if I remember correctly it had the current Streak available until somewhere around Nov 2011 when Opus comes out.

Some stores/websites still sell them otherwise ebay is your best friend...
There are PLENTY of brand new unlocked streaks on ebay...

My problem is that I don't have much money. I want to take advantage of the best buy upgrade price of $50 without having to go to the route of paying hundreds directly for the phone off contract. If I had to do that, i would just upgrade to the htc infuse.

Since Amazon is out of stock, I think the next best "deal" would be just process your upgrade at dell.com for $99. Else like the previous post, check ebay for possible lower price.
