Vibrant can't download through web browsers? - Vibrant General

Hi everyone I just got my vibrant from tmo last week and I'm loving most of it so far.
I tried doing a search and couldn't find anything on this but maybe I missed it, so if I did, can someone help point me in the right direction? Thanks!
Basically, I am trying to download .doc and .ppt files directly from my class website which my professor posted up. I tried through the default web browser, dolphin browser, steel, skyfire and xscope. I am unable to download the files through any of these browsers except for xscope. Even through xscope though, the file is downloaded, but when I attempt to open through thinkfree office, all I see is html code in the document. Also, if I use documents to go, it says that it cannot be opened because it is actually an html file.
I have verified that through my laptop that the files on the website do work and can be downloaded to my pc.
Thanks for the help!

I've got a Captivate and I noticed the same thing today... using Skyfire to log into WebCT (or "Blackboard) and couldn't get it to download .pdf files or powerpoint files.... wonder if its related, or if maybe its the WebCT/Blackboard system itself.

Try installing a file manager like Astro and enabling the browser plug in. then you should be able to download any file.

Same for me, my uni also uses Blackboard (but thankfully i hear they are changing system next year or so). I've tried stock and opera browser.
Hard to tell where the problem is tho.. blackboard is fairly crappy software, doesn't work half of the time.

Like posted above... Download Astro (free from market) and open it, go to settings and enable "Enable browser downloader" and then you can download anything

Thanks, gave that a try but I still haven't been able to download the files off the website. I noticed one more thing though actually, I'm having trouble downloading say a .docx file through my yahoo mail, but the same file will download through gmail...

You might also give Opera a try. I ran into a similar issue when downloading from a campus webdav server, and Opera was the only browser that worked for me.

there used to be a download helper app, but I can't seem to find it in the market anymore.

Download Crutch Lite has always worked for me.

Thanks for suggesting opera, I completely forgot about that one and direct downloads from websites has been working for my current needs so far.
Is download crutch lite for the default web browser?

Its a stupid limitation most likely imposed by the carriers. I couldn't even download a mp3. I reconciled the problem with a.program called bytetornado from the apparently market. It does away with the restrictions.

I'm on a different ROM on Vibrant and I don't think that ThinkFree is no longer on my phone. I need to find which ROM has ThinkFree because having those options is a must for me.

yes i have just seen those including "steel" and what i am installing with high hopes the firefox/fennec beta!
fennec opens and closes (not force) on its own oh well
Do people not like the stock browser? My votes is for the default web browser since it's the best I've tried so far. Firefox looks promising too.
i dont mind the defualt but i cannot download no files that are .apk even after doing the settings change to allow them. this is why i switched browsers. i really wanted to try this fennec except it doesnt launch...

LMAO! Wait... don't make me add you to my blocked list!
Have you flagged Allow Unknown Sources in Settings-->Applications?
Doing so default browser should download .apk

yes i have but it still dont work but does for other browsers.
1) use Download Crutch for default browser to download anything.
2) Tried default one & Skyfire 2.0. Didn't like Skyfire - jumpy zooms, videos play only partially and can't be navigated (forward/back), etc. Still keeping Skyfire just in case, but using default one.
The only serious quirk of the default browser - lack of proper visual tab interface for selecting between browser windows (you have to switch between windows based only on their titles).
I haven't seen any reason to switch off of the default browser. It has a very Chrome-like feel to it, and has outperformed the other browsers I've tried (Opera and Skyfire so far) by a large margin. I feel like Google did a good job importing a close rendering of their fantastic desktop browser onto the mobile market.
Another solution is:
Install ASTRO FileMenager and flag Enable Download from Browser. You can find this option in Preferences
I've tried all of them and so far XScope has been the only one I use. Love it and always getting better.
So let's make a list:
Native
Opera Mini
Skyfire
Xscope
Dolphin
Steel
Is there any other?
I suggest to copy and paste the list and add him to it so in the end we get a whole list.

Doesn't that only apply for the market?
Pretty sure we'll be able to DL anything in the next CM update which will render all the other browsers (aside from the stock one) useless. At least for me.
And I agree with the above poster that the only quirk are the tabs, or lack of. Add those then we are in business.

Open PDF in Browser

I have a rooted EVO and have installed the 8/01 Cyanogenmod nightly build rom, and I like it. But I can't open PDFs natively in the browser (or a popup) that are on my website by just tapping.
Can anyone point me in the right direction. I've tried the default browser, Dolphin HD, Xscope and Skyfire. All the browsers want to save the file rather than open it or they can't do anything with the file, like Xscope. I'm willing to install any rom.
Thanks a lot.
Yes, what's the deal with that...using a pdf viewer on my joomla sites. With the google pdf browser viewer solution, it renders using dolphin but not with other pdf embed site plugins? ??

Adobe Reader in market for free
I used to have the same problem... I have to access alot of PDFs through my schools website(d2l). Where the pdf should have appeared, it was just blank. Unexpectedly last week when I tried accessing the files, it started working for no apparent reason. The only thing Ive downloaded recently that could or could not have something to do with it is the Adobe AIR app in the market. Wish I could be more helpful this used to frustrate the hell out of me. Im running Skyfire BTW(Quickest in my opinion)

Stock web browser force closing???

So I fixed my battery issue, but now web is just closing on its own. Damn I suck, sorry guys gigantic noob. I don't want to download another browser cause I honestly don't mind the standard browser. I've rooted and done the GPS thing.
Please, help out a struggling peon???

Closing as soon as it opens or after some use? If the former, is your home page set to Google.com with location access enabled?
It's an Android software problem imho. I was just entering a reply in a different xda forum USING OPERA and before I could finish the f'n browser just f'n closed on me. Didn't save where I was browsing or anything.
Has happened to me several times and I don't think it's only the stock browser.
Yeah, google is set as home page and location finder is on.

o noticed that with the lag fix i applied, the browser freezes up or just wont load all the way. I removed the lag fix and everything works fine. I don't even know if there is a way to delete the cache on the ext2 partition. cache cleaner doesn't fix it so it just builds up and builds up

I bet that's your problem. To fix it, try to get into settings before the page finishes loading. Clear location access, and until Samsung releases a fix, don't allow Google.com to have location access.
If you really like the local search feature, try "places directory" from the market in the mean time.
this happened to me everytime i tried to go to flash intesive websites. it wasn't too often though, i ended switching to xscope is the best browser i have used on a mobile device(personal opinion).
give it a try.
stock, dolphin and skyfire all crash on me if i go to some web pages with flash. Turning off use plugins in the settings fixes it.

[Resolved] Browser doesnt download files that "arent supported"

I tried to download a pdf earlier and the browser refused to download the file saying that its not supported...
Is there a way around this annoying issue?
Edit: Astro File Manager allows you to override browser download restrictions in its preferences. Problem solved.
That's weird, I havnt run into that and I have been downloading all sorts of crap from both browser and dropbox. Do you have a pdf reader installed? Try installing a reader and then downloading.

Had same issue use alternative browser and its fine
Thats kind of silly that samsung gimped the native browser so badly... I mean, are there any browsers that are better from a speed perspective?
there are some that are faster but buggier
i personally like xscope and skyfire
dolphin browser hd used to be on my list but lately its super buggy and laggy
Simple fix: just install ASTRO.

Astro lets you override browsers from preventing downloads on unsupported files. It's in the settings/preferences.
Ah ha. Thanks guys.
I stopped using Astro cause it didnt support 7z files...
I guess i should support those guys again
Hi, as another option I like using other file managers besides astro so I installed download file crutch it is not available in the market but you can find links for it here. Right now I am using that with estrongs file manager and it is great.

[Q]Why I can't load this site in my s5?

Po.st/
It seems that I can't access this site with any browser in my phone, I don't remember when it still but it's really annoying. It's a link shortener service used by many pages on my facebook timeline like news, men's health, music......
I've tried to access this site with facebook browser, Mozilla and chrome but even the home page of po.st/ gave me an error message
So, any idea how to fix this?
I'm on lollipop but I remember having this problem with KK too.
Thank you
Do you use an adblocker? If so that's probably why.
Edit... Im assuming your rooted. You can use the Hosts editor app and open it and search www.po.st and select that file and delete it then you should be good to go.
