Samsung Flavor - Vibrant General

Coming from the Nexus One, running cMod6, I can't describe how choppy and over-themed this software is. Please, for the love of god, someone develop a Vanilla Android rom!!!! PLEASE!!

Hang tight. Good things are right around the corner.

Use launcher pro for the time being.
Sent from my awesome Vibrant using XDA App

The "theme" is as light as it could be for a complete overhaul. You need to look elsewhere for the reasons why your phone is choppy, it's certainly not TW overall (maybe the widgets, some of them are extremely laggy).

Do the lag fix. World of difference

+1.
@ OP: Eugene's ROM is probably the fastest and most stable out right now. Besides, why wouldn't you have just downloaded ADW by now? Isn't that the stock Launcher on all CM ROMS now-a-days??? I would suggest following some devs on twitter too, you'll see that things are coming around nicely.

Yea, I couldn't stand it either. Way too colorful for my tastes.

Just remove all the widgets from your home screens. Instant fix. At least it was for me.

Yea, I dont get the hate....

The only thing that is really overly slow, is the cold boot-up process (media scanning, especially). Other than that, I find TouchWiz to be my favorite of all Android skins. There is a noticeable lag when launching an app for the first time (two seconds or so), but I'm willing to deal with that, even if there is room for improvement.
Not having some of the TouchWiz customizations is what keeps me from jumping to another Android phone. I couldn't live without these iPhone-like Calendar and Clock apps.
But you think TouchWiz is bad? Christ, go try scrolling around the home screens of the Droid X or the EVO. Those phones feel so antiquated, to me. Though, I'd like to see if 2.2 makes them usable...
In other news: GPS and Compass are still completely broken, with no word from Samsung.

not hate tw lags like a ***** is all.

Really? I thought that had more to do with the I/O performance. Stock Android is going to be snappier for sure but there is no reason why the Vibrant can't handle TouchWiz, which a good portion of is just different colors. My eyes are bleeding after looking at stock Android on the Vibrant. I know some prefer it but I can't tell you how many people think TW is just the "iPhone launcher"

simply put, if you don't like it, don't use it when we release it...

That's not what I was saying at all, and I won't. Simply put.

I'm sure most people wouldn't mind it if it wasn't so damn colorful and a blatant copy of iOS. Besides the vibrant already looks very similar to an iPhone no need in making it look like you are using a knockoff.
To be fair TW has some very nice additions but at a price of ugly.

Wow, I thought having a verity would be nice... If you up tight, please don't use anything I post.. There is no point in being high and mighty...
Some don't like tw, some do... Some like plain jane.. I like both so I don't care, but have source we can work from? Well, we'll never have tw source so be grateful anyone is working on stuff from source.

Gotta get rid of Touchwiz right off the bat

My android progression was
G1->Behold 2->G1->Nexus One
That behold 2 had great hardware and just god-awful software. Touchwiz blows, we all know it.
Priority One- Get this phone to stock. ASAP.
Yes I agree and using Odin flasher sucks. I'm hoping for better development here on xda.

Touch wiz 3.0 is looking great. Its getting very good reviews. I don't have any experience with earlier versions though.
Been big fan off sense long time, and last samsung i did not like the Touchwiz, but now on Sgs with 3.0 i like it quite alot, and was fast as hell in begining but have slow down a litle bit now after a week use with more apps and stuff. But other then that it looks very nice and working great. With a task killer it helps speed it upp tho
Sounds like a bunch of baseless garbage. TouchWiz 3.0 looks extremely nice.
Again, ths isnt touchwiz 2, its touchwiz 3. Touchwiz 3 is fine and so far I havent seen one person or review who have said they dont like it, not one.

I think it's fine! the app menu is very good. The only problem are the lack of a few widgets compared to sense. But they can be produced or downloaded from the market.
I'll give it a shot I guess. Someone's porting it to the Nexus, so I'll try it there. Obviously we need at least 2.2 though.
I guess I just don't trust Samsung after the Behold 2 debacle.

I am a HUGE fan of TouchWiz 3.0! TouchWiz sucked really bad on my i8910, but I gave touchwiz a try on the SGS and it's a great introduction to Android.
It basically marries some of the good features of the iphone with Android. I like it.
youtube.com/watch?v=xAqZ5Hk96QY&feature=player_embedded
LOOKS BAD ASS! best UI ive seen on any android phone.
People are so quick to bash Touchwiz 3.0 without even knowing what it is.
Its a completely different beast from Touchwiz 2.0.
Id take it over Sense UI, ive had Sense for over a hero on my HTC Hero.
That look awesome, i wonder where is this build came from.
Maybe some one could get hold so we can try it too.
Its a Froyo and doesn't look like a same UI we are using now on Éclair.
Yeah they somehow got the samsung widgets to work, with launcherpro, it looks fantastic though, and from the video, galaxy is handling it like a champ. that GPU does wonders for the live wallpaper.
plus im a big music head, Samsungs music player is far superior to any other music player available on android.
My bad i thought its a Froyo
Id also love to know how he is running a launcher over touchwiz....looks awesome.
you just download launcherpro off the market place....
people are all stressing about this touchwiz 3.0 and saying they dont want the galaxy because of the touchwiz....
you can easily replace it....i dunno what the big deal is about it.
Plus touchwiz adds a lotta other cool features besides the home.
but i heard running a launcher stops touchwiz from running? or was i mis informed?

Froyo running w/ Sense on Desire, can we get a port?

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=720294
Check out the thread there. 2.2 w/ working sense on the desire, I know our hero guys can do the same.
I don't like sense personally!
I loved sense....now I c how worthless it is
sense is what makes the hero "the" hero. i love sense.

Agreed I love sense and people are dead set saying sense is the reason there rom is slow. I disagree and think they r retarded. They just have no idea how to use it and add speed to their rom
Any AOSP ROM I've ever used, JIT's, overclocking and all, is WAY less smooth than Sense.
My gf (iphone user) picks up my phone and tries scrolling through the home screens in ADW Launcher, and goes 'your phone is so slow, what's wrong with it'?
SenseUI is wildly smooth in comparison. Responsive to swipes, the screens scroll smoothly, and it looks a lot better.
SenseUI is what makes these phones better than iPhone for a lot of users.
The functionality of Android is already better IMO, but SenseUI makes it prettier and smoother.
I ALWAYS go back to SenseUI no matter how much I try to show my love to AOSP ROMs.
Sense FTW

U think so. So lets see um my rom for instance hmmmmm......has sense plus 2 other launchers...has oc...has a2sd...is huge file(147 MB download LOL)...installed I have over 100 MB free and running sense as the launcher the rom is blazing fast. Maybe as fast as darchdroid. It has nothing to do with sense. It has to do with slow SD cards. Non overclocked roms. And not knowing what ur doing. U can go ahead and run around and make statements like the ignorant ones I see u paste all over but just know that the people out here that actually know how to get a rom running fast and stable and actually produce work know the truth

First Gingerbread details

According to this article (http://phandroid.com/2010/10/18/exclusive-first-android-gingerbread-details/) there is an early build of Gingebread in the wild. If this is true, I believe a leaked rom won't be long away.
That image could be anything, not a great article.

My toughts exactly. I bet this explains the rumors of Gingerbread not being the tablet optimized 3.0 OS version we were waiting for. It will be a cleaned up version of Froyo with hardware accerlation. Which sure isn't bad but I'm afraid a lot of users will end up being dissappointed.
Of course the picture can be fake but the source seems pretty solid.
Unless they fix some of the big issues in their current "features", they will have a max exodus to WP7

WP7 will be a damn train wreck. The Kin's production was haulted a month end because it sold only a few thousand devices. They should probably just call it what it really is, Windows Mobile 6.6
Enjoy your decade old technology with a mediocre gui slapped on top. It's the Microsoft way.
As for Gingerbread, I hope there are alot of behind-the-scene updates. Gui updates can wait if you're cranking things up under the hood like they did in Froyo.
I think that the article has some truth.
It mentions that the Android Green is going to be much more prominent throughout the OS which I think is correct. The new Market has much more green and in the latest Gmail app, when an email is deleted the undo bar that appears is the same green as the green used in the Market.
All this talk of there being a totally brand new UI (like WP7) is wrong. There is nothing wrong with the look of the homescreens so that it why the blurry image looks pretty similar to Froyo. The UI is going to be refreshed which means the UI is going to be consistent throughout the entire OS and apps created by Google.
From what I have seen, the new UI is going to be similar to the current Gallery app and the Android Green is going to be much more prominent throughout the OS. At I/O, a music app was shown which had the same UI as the Gallery app. The latest Car Home app also has the look of the current Gallery app.

Nothing wrong with this at all. I always wondered after Eclair why Google didn't make more of the OS elements look more like the genie widget or the gallery with the 3Dish grey look. Now if they can get a decent media player and have studios continue to give Android respect and porting good games to our OS I think I'll just keep my eye off that shiny new Dell Venue Pro

He's hardly trolling. Google need to change more than just invisible behind-the-scenes stuff, although adding Flash support was a fairly big deal. Android needs better support for large screens, a much better media/music player (Gapless support is way overdue if nothing else).
I'm perfectly happy with my N1 with 2.2, but Android can't stay still, most of the changes since 1.5 have been background things, tweaking and quite incremental. Hopefully 3.0 has something really good in it to justify my waiting for a decent Android tablet.

That's what I'm sayin. We just need a good music player, like the one in the youtube link a few posts above, and more quality apps. I must admit I was pretty excited about WP7, but I'm in the air bc I'd be losing flash for a few months, as well as all the cool *cliche* customizations. Updated Video: Trigger V2.1.1

Thought some of you may like to see this amazing ROM in action:
Edit: watching this from your phone, watch from the embedded video. Mobile youtube doesn't show annotations, which I prefer.
Update V2.1.1 video added:
http://goo.gl/f9s65
in the videos you should start talking the song is annoying as hell for me since i'm a teen and i'm used to some rock lol.
Muted it and put on some eminem (cool kid yeah!)
I do that because "I Found my Baby".... the rom. Grow up and listen to real music every now and then, it wont hurt. I'm 30.
My suggestion was for you to talk, instead of annotations, yet you tell me to grow up.
What does growing up have anything to do with liking which kind of music?
you like that kind, sorry i can't tell what it is, i like rock, pop, rap etc.
Grow up and learn to accept that all people aren't the same.
Definition of music: an artistic form of auditory communication incorporating instrumental or vocal tones in a structured and continuous manner
Yeah i'm sure rap has that, oh look, so does rock omg.
I guess every music is "real"
you said the song was annoying as hell... for you... b/c you were a kid.... hence what i said. Talk about the video/rom.... leave music out of it. FYI, non-teens like rock too....

All the roms since nero 5 have improve on gps, speed, and data. That alone is enough to change rom. I've always found the TW releases to be very underwhelming to the eyes. Ugly black and green. Trigger looks terrific and performs like a champ. Great work edt.

^ pretty much exactly my thought
How could anyone be annoyed by that music? That does look very sweet. Now let me read the whole thread and see what I'm looking at.
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.
^ they just released V2.1... I'm holding off until all the mods are updated (today/tomorrow) b/c I just love the semi-accurate battery mod that much... also, not sure how the rom could really be improved much to be honest.
edit, thought of one thing... seems like all froyo roms recently are limited to 4 windows in the browser, not sure why this is.
Who's the artist? Sounded a bit like Ray Charles then he did some George Benson type guitar scat? I watched on YouTube mobile so no notes, just to be sure this is what rom? PS can't you just use the battery mod app or theme the battery icon through metamorph?
Don't blame me, blame my keyboard's autocorrection algorithm.

What's the big deal with Sense UI?

And why does like every other ROM for this phone (along with certain other phones) have it? Is it purely a graphical thing, does it increase performance, or what? I've generally used plain/unthemed ROMs (like CM Nightly) and then customize them the way I like (keeping them as minimal/lightweight as possible), but I'm considering switching.
Also, does it generally scale with LCD density changes? I can't use a rotary-style unlocker when I lower the LCD density, for example, because it looks messed up as a result.
Not another of these posts.
It's a point of personal preference.
One of the biggest reasons I use sense is the integration with with various apps.
I also like the looks of the sense camera
THe dialer is also pretty big for me. I can punch in the numbers based on where the alphabets are on and it deduces who I want to call. say I want to call john, I punch in 5646 and it looks up contacts that contains 5646 or the letters that correspond to the alphabet. So 5646 will also pull up everyone named john as well...
apart from that, i also like the looks of it as well.

Sorry, didn't think that this question would have been asked before, especially the LCD density part - which, speaking of, anybody know if it would work with a screen density of, say, 140? Most people seem to stay at 190 or above, so searching for the answer hasn't been too successful for me.
LOL one thing is for sure it DON'T speed up phones.

but it does still run smooth.
It's kinda obvious it wont make things run faster when you're adding another layer you know...

Lockscreen, dialer, camera, HTC Sense Sync, contact linking, widgets, the ability to do a search before post a repetitive thread...
Sense usually doesn't get along too well with LCD Density changes especially with the default Rosie launcher. Sense is great though, looks nice and well integrated with the apps.
As said, personal preference. I'm using Cyanogenmod now, but beyond it's appearance*, Sense covers for a lot of Android's functional deficiencies. For example, the above-mentioned T9 dialer is essential and I can't believe Android doesn't have it built in. The camera app is WAY better than the stock one. I believe you can copy selections WITHIN text messages, which is nice - in fact Sense had the Gingerbread-style text-selection functionality before Gingerbread. The clock app is also much better (and there's no use of Clockopia, which is possibly the worst font ever made by man or beast).
Newer versions allow you to launch apps from the lockscreen, which is nice.
Of course, it's pretty heavy, and all the deep twitter/facebook integration is pretty useless if you're not a big social networker.
*I find Android to be a horribly ugly operating system, but Sense isn't really much better imo. I theme every ROM before I flash it
useful, get everything u need at ease, bunch of widgets to choose from
see everything u want at glance (time, date, weather ...)

you're quoting the wrong person.
I'm not the OP
I used to love the look of AOSP roms like CM and others, but I left that for MIUI.
I have used Sense for a bit but couldn't get into it. Roms like CM are made to be light and quick with little optimization. Roms like Sense and MIUI are meant to be heavily optimized, not as quick, but run smoothly non the less. As others stated, it's all about preference.
Sense is just "quietly brilliant" IMO

That always makes me laugh. Because HTC Sense is the loudest, most useless waste of space stacked with gobs of chrome UI I've ever used.

You either love it or hate it that's just the way it is with sense. I personally don't like it, but it is nice to know if I ever really get bored I can try it out and try to like it lol.

I feel a hint of cynicism... I'm not an elitist because I think that Sense is bloated. And I know I'm not alone in this thought. I'm not saying Sense is bad per se, I'm just explaining how I see it. You can talk trash about stock android if you want, but I don't think you'll get too much support on that front. I don't hate on Sense exclusively by the way, I'm not a big fan of any skins. It's not that I'm opposed to the idea of the skin, its just that no company has made a good one yet.

Agreed, lots of people are loyal to Sense. That's the idea, HTC wants it to be a consistent experience people get attached to, and they've spent a lot of time and money to create it.
I have a nandroid of a Sense ROM on my G2 right now. I switch to it now and then, but I go back to my normal ROM within the day. It is quite polarizing.

Yeah, you got the cynicism. I said I can talk trash about anything else but just because I can does not mean I hate it or I think it's bad so don't start putting words in my mouth.
But your previous comment was as helpful as me saying "omglol touchwiz blows monkey chunks lolz!!!! Oneoneelventyone"
Sense may seem bloated to you, but no other company has come to an integration with other apps as htc has yet and still look good doing it.

I pretty clearly expressed how I felt about the UI concepts that HTC has created (bloated, useless, too much chrome).
Everything you're saying to defend it is just as subjective as anything I can say about how bad I think it is. UI concepts are not universally accepted. Just because someone likes it doesn't mean everyone does. You may think that they've done a good job with app integration, but I really see no usefulness in Sense, and it really doesn't 'look good doing it' (which is my first point.).
I think its pretty clearly put that most Android skins are pretty polarizing, you either like it or you don't. And this polarization will obviously be strong with a very customized and long-going skin like Sense.
I just don't understand why your word is better than mine because you like Sense and I don't. You've given no more examples of how great it is than I have given of how I don't like it (although I have given a few). So really, I think you need to settle down. I said that Sense UI is bloated and full of useless crap, and you said it isn't. What an argument.
