SGS 3 days on...... - Galaxy S I9000 General

Now that I have had a few days playing with my new phone I thought I would leave some feedback.
Firstly the screen is amazing! I have had several iphone4 owners grovelling at it.
Swype is a touch of genius! I am using it now to type this and its fast as hell!
The battery usage is pretty severe compared to what I expected! Does apps like juice defender work?
Gps is flakey! My tracks was bouncing all over the place, so I guess I am joining the rest of you praying for a firmware fix. I will try co pilot tomorrow to see if its usable.
Lag was a problem, however have been using advanced task manager and it seems to help. I know rooting is supposed to be better with autokiller, but I believe rooting invalidates your warranty? Also, when I reboot my phone I have about 150mb free, but after a days use using adv task man I only have 55ish.
Anyhow in all I am happy with the phone, just need to work on the gps and lag.
Btw, how do I figure out my firmware number?

in settings, about, and somewhere down the line.
You should be really restrictive when killing processes. Use the ignorelist for just about everything that might be used somehow by something.
Example, start the camera and it can take 2 - 4 sec to be ready to shoot. Have it idling in the background and its up in a split second. This goes for everything.
The onlu thing I kill is games, market and some other useless stuff i tend to run sometimes. Remember: you dont need a lot of free memory, for a quick phone you need your often-used-apps idling and loaded in mem.

Similar to my imrpessions in the first days. Screen is outstanding, the only reason I keep wanting to keep the phone. Swype is nice but didn't get used to it.. still type faster on my Nokia E72...but that is a matter of practicing.
GPS.. *sigh*. No comments. It is useless.
Also the lag was annoying but I won't complain much on that since I never tried any of the unofficial fixes.... still, out of the box it is a problem, definitely something Samsung didn't polish well enough.

Plenty of lag and memory fixes available.

is lag really a major issue out of the box?

yeah theres a decent amount of lag out of the box, but TONS of fixes available

About the battery, OP, wait untill you pass 5-7 initial charge cycles. Battery time increases twofold or more.
On my first battery cycle, it wasted out in around 11 hours.
Now i get more than 2 days of heavy use, and up to 6 of light use.

Your SGS must be really different from mine, perhaps even one of the 6 units that were released in proper shape worldwide. Hang on to it.
Not only you have no GPS issues but you also have no lag.
Mine has no GPS and it lags on the stock ROM (JM2)
Sure. There are lag fixes. And you can always buy an external GPS unit for only 150€ or so.
I just have the nasty habit of presuming I won't need to fix anything right after unpackaging and booting or pay more after spitting out 599€ for a "cutting edge" smartphone.
Customers... always so ungrateful and never pleased. /spit.

It also varies based on your applications though. With some applications running, phone can't sleep properly.

I really hope your right, as mine is still not great tbh.
I will try ultimate juice to see if that helps..
Should I be doing anything in specific in the charge cycles? i.e letting it fully discharge, or anything else?
Ref Lag;
I did experience it out of the box, but only after using lots of multiple apps. I found that task killer fixed the problem, and I have not tried any other fixes.
However I still cant understand my RAM usage.
150MB free on boot, which then decreases to 130MB after say an hour.
2+ Hours later I am down into the 90's...and after 8+ hours into the 60's.
This is using task killer regular enough...so not sure why it happens.
Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated.

Mine could sometimes take up to 10 seconds to open the phone app on the stock rom. Very annoying. Especially when there's an incoming call and you can't answer because the answer key just won't show up. Now I'm running the jg5 rom and samset 1.6 rom. And everything is lightning fast now. Faster than my iphone 4.

Using the Galaxy S as well for a while now. The phone is AWESOME. After the lagfix this is the best android device I ever messed with. I thought I would want to change the launcher but after getting used to the iPhone like design, touchwiz is actually one of the best skins I have seen. Rotates both ways, you can change the order of the homescreens easily and you can have as many as you want up to 7. It offers some cool widgets just like Sense does and the menu can be all reorganized and not be mixed up by alphabetical order. Even the built in keyboard is awesome for me. Fits with the rest of the design and its multitouch enabled. And you have Swype preinstalled if you want that as well. The camera is awesome and despite the lack of flash you can still take some really decent pics with this if there is some light around.
The screen is just on the sweet spot. 4" with Super AMOLED. Im in heaven really lol.
Even my mum that is a complete iPhone addict is now surrendered to this phone capabilities. Nice job by samsung and obviously by the genius who developed the lagfix and 1 click root.

It's worth noting though that Beowulf_pt complained that reports of poor GPS and lag were the things holding him back from purchasing this phone (so I'm honestly wondering why he purchased the phone in the first place). Especially since purchasing it every post he has made seems to have been complaints about the GPS..
The Lag exists, but it doesn't make the phone unusable. Agreed it could be better, but whether it really affects anyone is questionable. It may be mostly fixable by switching scheduler and caching better. Remember, phones such as the Nexus one might be better currently, but they also shipped with a deluge of problems which are now fixed too.. Even the iPhone 4 did..
The GPS does have obvious issues (the accuracy indicator is still wrong, which to me suggests software), but other than the GPS, I am still happy with the phone. Also remember the battery issues depend on what you are running (some apps don't let the phone sleep properly).
I'm still happy to give them until Froyo to fix it. If Samsung doesn't fix it properly by then (and instead does something silly like tell us the "signal strength indicators are wrong"), then I'll try to get a refund. But at the moment, I'm willing to give them a chance.

It is surprising to read people who have no gps problems or lag issues straight out of the box, either they are very lucky and have bought fully functionaly sgs or are quite used to devices which take awhile to respond (I think it is the latter)!
Certainly there are fixes out there to improve the gps and lag issues but none have completely resolved the problem. I'm using JM5 which is working brilliantly and gps seems to work quite accurately especiallywith co-pilot no-other fix has been applied (to scared to!), the lag has also improved significantly but it does occassionaly freeze.
I'm also willing to give the boys at sammy a chance till 2.2 version is out or till Desire HD is launched, which ever comes first. Till then this is the best device out there inmho.

I too didn't notice any lag, until I installed the fixes, then the lag was noticeable as the phone was MUCH smoother.

My SGS Experience and some queries

Hello everybody,
I didn't think I'd be writing this thread. I mean, owning a SGS is a dream come true for me. But I came to know that the reality is not as good as my dream.
First, let me start with the PLUS/Advantages
--> Obviously, the best screen I've ever seen till date.
--> Feels very thing and light, though a bit large, definitely its pocketable and handy (IMHO).
--> Android 2.1 interface rocks! Superb Visuals unlike iOS and very user friendly.
--> Android Market
--> Superb Default Browser
-->Very Very Responsive, just like the iphone.
--> Great hardware - Still couldn't belie it is able to play 720p videos with more than 6mbps bitrate.
--> Excellent Video camera - 720p video recording is so cool!
--> Excellent NIGHT mode!
--> Dedicated SGS section at XDA
Now, the MINUSes/ Disadvantages.
--> Initially I thought, only the lack of flash and the iphone like model are the only bad things about this phone.
--> LAG, LAG, LAG, LAG! As the usage days increases, the lag increases gradually. And I'm unable to get rid of the lag.
And what's most annoying is that, even the telephony and messaging application is lagging (android could've atleast reserved some permanent resources for both of these apps, as they are the ACTUAL PHONE apps.)
--> Battery - Still I'm not sure whether it is a good battery or not. But I'm definitely disappointed. All of my friends used to have a probem with their smartphone, if they use the features of their phone, the battery won't even last a day. But before buying SGS, I read in various reviews about its great battery life. So I thought, I can use all the features of this phone and it'll last atleast a day or more. But if I use the features of this phone, then battery won't even last for a day. But if I use it like a normal phone, the battery is good (But who wants that? I need to use those features, that's why I've put so much money into this box )
--> Samsung. I guess I'll be stuck with what I have. No official updates, no fixes, no nothing.
P.S: If any one of you can help me out with my problems with LAG and share some tips on battery improvement, IT'D BE GR8!! (Of course, I did see the threads regarding tips, but still...)
lag fix
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=724251
Battery
Fully charge battery, then use it until it is completely discharged, recharge fully, that is one cycle.
After you have done five complete cycles your battery should be conditioned and give you longer between charges.
My phone lasted about 8 hours when I first got it, after three cycles it's now lasting 24 hours between charges.
Hope that helps.

@ AllGamer - Thanks for the link mate. I've seen that earlier, but I'm too noobish to try that out. I'm waiting for an OFFICIAL samsung firmware update. So that, if anything happens while updating that firmware, I could still claim my warranty

Just update your firmware to JM2 and all your lag problems will be gone. Seriously, i had 4 different firmwares and can honestly say, that JM2 is lag free. It also comes with a samsung provided task manager(long press home now includes a button to sammy task manager).
Updating firmware is so easy, and you can't brick your phone(honestly).
There's no harm in flashing, since there are now stock firmwares available, so you can go back if you want to return the phone in future. Why wait for the official update?
@buddy01 - thats very convincing. I'd like to do that. But this phone is my 3 month salary - I wouldn't dare to spoil it in anyway. Of course, it makes sense, when you say 'NO BRICK + REVERSIBLE FIRMWARE'... But still . . . .
BTW, is the thread mentioned by AllGamer ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=724251) is JM2 firmware??

No, that's the mimocan lag fix, which in my honest opinion is not needed anymore since JM2.
If i were you, i would just go with the JM2 and see if that's fast enough for you (is for me) and if not then try the lag fix.
All i can say is that im 99,9% sure you won't brick your phone if you flash your firmware like everyone else.
I am running JM2 with the lag fix. And my phone is still laggy as hell.

Must be some crappy configuration, app, something messing it up. Mine is Flash Gordon fast. I don't know if the fact that i use launcherPro instead of Touch(lag)Wiz, make any difference. It might also be that something is changed in latest (JM1,JM2) firmwares in such a way that mimocan fix is actually a burden now. Who knows, but im lag free, honestly.

Strange. I too use Launcher Pro. What I experience is this.. I press to open an app.. The app starts to open but seems to freeze midway for a second or two, sometimes longer. Even when I try to enter the settings menu I get this lag.
Another strange thing is that sometimes when in an app the screen returns to home screen as if the back button has been pressed. I reenter the app but instantly I am returned to home screen. I try another app.. Same thing. Only when I turn the screen off and on again will I be able to open an app..
Very weird..

Something is definetly wrong with your setup. i would do a factory reset and/or do the flashing again with re-partition and forget the lag fix.
Only app that takes 2 to 4 seconds to open in some occasions is gallery, and that is if i open it the first time (fresh boot or killed with task manager). everything else i commonly use, such as dialer one, handsentSMS, app draw, camera, gmail, market, youtube, browser, maps, contacts ... all open instantly.
The other problem your experiencing, i have never heard of. Must be some app acting wrong or things got messed up because of the mimocan fix. Honestly i would do a factory reset and then re-flash JM2 and forget the mimocan fix.
Yeah perhaps you´re right. I think I will.. Thanks.

I repeated the procedure this time with mimocan fix on EXT4. I now rate 1592 in quadrant and the phone is smooth as hell..
I haven't tried mimocan fix yet sounded very good, but rather complicated and requires Odin's flashing the phone.
My current galaxy is rooted and I install AutoKiller to better manage the memories. So far so good, lag are kept at the minimal. This procedure to me is far simpler and give acceptable performance.
Mimocan is the most complicated because in addition to odin flashing the kernel (not the entire firmware), you must also partition an external sd card and make some changes to the filesystem with an terminal program.
Mimocan gives you the best quadrant score atm, but after seeing a video of it in work, i can without a doubt say that my phone is just as fast with the newest jm2 firmware only.

Lag? What lag?

Is it me or has this so called lag been blown completely out of proportion with the SGS? I used to have a HTC Hero, I tell you, it's like going from riding a snail to a rocket fuselage. That phone was so slow, a phone may I add which only a year ago was seen as the 'iPhone killer'.
Please are there any previous HTC Hero users who now own a SGS? You have to speak out!
I mean sure, I've used a HTC Desire, it's very fast. But the only difference I have noticed is that on the SGS sometimes Apps take around 3secs longer to open than they should. That's it!! I mean, why are you all complaining so much! It's just as fast as the Desire except that point.
I have now had the SGS for 2 weeks, I haven't noticed any considerable slowdown. It works great! Why are you all complaining like babies? Have you installed Crysis 2 on your SGS or something, obviously your phone would never work again if you did that. Before anybody asks, I have made no changes to my SGS. I have an unlocked SGS, still on Touchwiz, no flash, no root. I don't even use task killer for God's sake. Please would someone explain to me what the big deal is?
What you have to realise is that it's not an always persistent problem. The phone in general is extremely fast, however with earlier firmwares the phone does not free up memory effectively. 3 seconds is nothing, but I recall sometimes waiting 10-15 seconds for the Dialer to launch. And when the memory is really really clogged up, it's a complete pain even pressing the home screen button (waiting 10 seconds to go to home isn't pretty either). For a phone with so much power, do you really think this is normal?
The difference must just be that I'm not a heavy app user. I still have the stock firmware the phone came with. Never had a 10 second delay with anything. Never noticed any sort of build up of lag. It works great! Do you guys install like 50 apps on your phones or something? Clearly that must be your problem.
I have never had any problems either (other than with flaky GPS).
Someone told me how to replicate the lag issue, and it boiled down to having 8-odd apps running in the background at once. I would expect the same on my multi-core 4GB RAM iMac, let alone a phone with 256MB RAM.
Not saying others are only having problems with the above situation, but it does seem like there are specific factors that cause it, which is why a lot of people have had no problems.
The phone has 512mb ram.
Just that currently, HiMem is not available (will be in froyo as a default, and if we're lucky, in the JF6 firmware as well)

And although I am not a really heavy app user, I am a heavy user, and it wasn't hard to make the phone lag quite heavily at times, so I'd say no, it has not been blown out of proportion.

Tachikoma_kun,
Please understand that Android does not work like the Mac OSX on an iMac, and that, if you open 8 odd apps in a row, you should _not_ have them all running in the background at once.
Android's memory management should close applications and free memory as needed. Processes will start if needed, be set to inactive as long as possible and killed if necessary. This works fine with other Android devices and obviously not with the Galaxy S.
You can read about the life cycle of Android Components at
http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/fundamentals.html
Using a task killer to free up memory might make your Galaxy S faster than not using one, but this is still a lot less efficient than it should be. In a working Android system you should use the most out of your available memory and the system should stay fast as you open and switch between applications. You should never have to think about which applications are running or not running.
Again, this works just fine with other devices. If it does not work with the Galaxy S then this is a serious flaw in the system. The flaw might be related to the slow I/O on the internal SD, or maybe there is a firmware bug besides the I/O. But it is currently not working correctly.
If you have access to 256mb memory of RAM, and you use a task killer to always keep 100MB free, then you use your device like it only had 156MB.
I also do not believe that the average customer without a technical background is able to use a task killer without shooting himself in the foot. Without knowledge about what each application and service does, and how android manages background processes, how should a normal user know what he can kill and which services he should keep running?
lag problem blown out of proportion. May be froyo update will satisfy the hunger of these power hungary geeks.

Perhaps whether a person thinks it's slow or not depends on what that person was used to?
That is exactly what i was telling people.
I come from the HTC Athena, and OMG... that thing is like crawling on sand, even with its super duper 625 Mhz CPU which by then was supposed to be the state of the art.
yet everything i did was sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow, using the SGS was like smooth flowing water, everything is perfect in this phone out of the box.

Im not a SGS owner but i keep noticing the reference to the desire. I did own a snapdragon device until about a week ago. (Droid Incredible). Switched to droid x. The only real reason i believe there is lag on the samsung is the touchwiz. The cpu&gpu in the SGS IS FAR SUPERIOR to that of the desire. Htc just has the most polished custom ui. If u get launcher pro id be willing to bet that lag is gonzola in a hurry. Maybe give this a try? Just trying to help my fellow androiders out. Goodluck fellas

what made you choose a Droid X vs. a SGS i9000?
the 2 phones are almost identical, except for the camera.
the lag is very real.
try opening Dolphin HD and then closing it again .....about 8+ seconds to do either, and that's with nothing else open.
instantaneous on the nexus with 2.2.
some apps are much slower than others, some there is no difference, but even the default samsung apps such as phonebook have a good lag when switching between tabs.

I agree. I'm guessing you haven't used/owned a HTC Hero? If so, you haven't experienced the PAIN!! lol.
On my side I don't have any heavy app, I don't do games, or HD stuff what I expect from my phone is to be able to show me my mail ... and that's where I have plenty of lag ( not all the time but everyday for sure).
Lag to open the mail, lag to delete the mail, lag to come back on the homescreen.
Up to 15 sec to come back from the settings menu.
My benchmark is the iphone 3GS but also the HTC P3600 and the HTC diamond which are not that fast
I have never been waiting so long in front of my phone.
Excuse me if I am working with my phone and I don't want to wait 10 sec all the time.
And stop insulting people who complains please
Oh and the comment about installing 50 apps .... please learn how android is supposed to work. I should be able to install 1000 app without any problem. Who care about the number of app installed ???
By the way, when I have a lot of lag I go in systempanel to see what it my amount of memory and it's around 30-50 Mb so it should not be a problem.

For those concerned about Vibrant's speed

I don't get it. I have compared my Vibrant to my Nexus one and 95% of the time the Vibrant is just as fast. Two exceptions, the market and speedtest.net app. Other than that, it flies! I will say before I did a hard reset the phone was in fact slow, it was a day and night difference after the reset. I get no lag, fast swipe through screens with TW launcher and apps open fast!
I have no lag that I can notice, but then again I don't bog my phones down with a ton of apps and games I will never use.
No lag. Stock rom, haven't factory resetted either. No GPS problems either without GPS fix o.0
Guess I was just lucky. I applied lag fix for the benchmarks for the hell of it though.
How speedy a device feels is very subjective and varies under different conditions.
I do have a Nexus One too ( in fact two) and in some respects it feels more responsive (mostly the menu, home, back and search button). Applications open faster as well.
Now, the comparison is not fair, ad the N1 is running Froyo and doesn't have the bloatware services installed by TMo (visual voicemail, my account, et al)
Browser and rendering speeds are much faster in the vibrant. Noticeably.
Download speed are much faster in the vibrant as well. Using Speedtest.net the vibrant scores 6 mbs vs 2 on the N1, same place, same time, same servers.
I think the biggest issue with the vibrant (other than the compass and the gps) is filesystem access, probablu due to using a large flash-based memory for storing apps.
I expect that when (if) the Froyo update arrives, the phone will fly.
In the meantime, and depending which apps people have installed and how they use the phone, some will continue to have better experiences with the N1, others with the vibrant.

I don't have an N1 to compare to, but, there was definitely a lag. Tolerable most of the time, but it would be completely frozen during a single install of an app from market. And don't get me started on a phone reboot. I wish I had timed it to be exact, but it must have been 5 entire minutes from reboot to when I could open and actually use the camera again to record something. Opera loads probably twice (maybe 2.5 times) as fast. Engadget would literally take 5 seconds to come up and at *least* 5 seconds *per page* to load, if not more. I would hit the arrow and have to wait..and wait..and wait. Now, I can hit the arrow repeatedly and it scrolls through news (both new and old)
Maybe not all phones lagged, but mine certainly did. Hope froyo helps some so I'm not forced to run a hack to get around poor rfs performance (or whatever it is).

Would really like to know when people without gps or speed problems got their phones. I bought mine the 19th of July from costco.
Also, the, "take off all your apps and games you don't use regularly. Don't use any widgets on your screens. Don't use all 7 screens for apps or widgets" comments are counterproductive. The phone was DESIGNED for this kind of use and if it doesn't perform as designed. Well, that's a problem.
One more thing - people like me who post about perceived problems are not HATERS. I love the phone and its potential with future upgrades to the software and firmware. That's why I come to this forum, to gets thoughts from the android community. Besides, if everyone who loved the phone and had zero problems with it posted all the time there would be no room for those of us seeking advice.

I wanted to say that I did the lag fix via the update.zip method and everything flies now including the Geniewidget which would rarely load articles. Samsung needs to or has fixed this (not sure, we don't know until we get an official update) but.. I can use the TWLauncher now.
Coming from a G1 I don't see any lag compared to what I was used to. Running Launcher Pro I personally feel its a bit smoother than TW 3.0, but still works perfectly fine for me.
I often wonder if people just look for something to tweak because they simply can't leave things alone and constantly want to improve because they simply can.

There is some lag that was very noticeable which happened every time you tried to use the market place and some random apps(the market was faster on my mt3g before the lag fix), after the lag fix the loading screen is gone if not instant.
Just did this update and I went from 983 to 2187! Awesome difference!

Same story for me. I've never seen this lag that everyone is talking about (except for the one person that mentioned some lag when installing apps - EVERY Android phone lags for a few seconds while an app is installing). I run the standard TW home and rooted and uninstalled a few of the bloatware apps I'd never use. Don't really see any reason to do the "lag fix".

tmobile vibrant works great and no complaints

I must be the only one in this forum with a working t-mobile vibrant.
Works great and never had the gps issue either.
Keep up the good work T-mobile!
You're not the only one.
my compass was wonky though, but the JI2 Rom fixed it for me.
glad to hear your's works fine.
I am on my third Vibrant...
My first one was perfect: GPS worked, no lag issues etc. Unfortunately the menu key became nonresponsive...
Mine works great also
My Vibrant is just fine
My Vibrant is working just fine...
Maybe its because I haven't tried to mod it.
At $300, I don't want to "brick" it.
Enough said.
Working great here too.

Never have lag issues just GPS issues. Other than that this thing has been wonderful ....
The one that I have currently works great. I returned my first one because the home button quit working, gps also sucked on that one as well. I knew that there was a problem because my wifes vibrants gps works great.

It's nice to see a thread complimenting this wonderful phone instead of complaining. I also love my phone. Rooted, applied the GPS flashable .zip, and lag fix, but since then, everything's been flawless. Well, the battery life could be a little better, but I get through the day. And the fact that I can't sync with my Google Groups is kind of annoying, too. Haha. But it's cool to see my iPhone friends drool over the greatness that is my Vibrant.
Cheers.
A good amount of people with problems are the ones that hack up their phones. I don't install garbage roms on my phone and I don't have any "lag" "fixes" on my phone and it works great. I updated my phone to JI2 and performance is exactly where I want it to be. Battery life is excellent, EVEN BETTER - despite the fact that I have Tweetcaster, Google Talk, Tweetdeck, Google News&Weather, Fancy Widget AND Feeds & updates syncing every hour or 3. 13 hours of time unplugged right now @ 60% left. Slept for 10 of those hours, left it alone for 2 and I've been used it for maybe 1 hour. Now I'm going to really wake up..
LOVING my Vibrant.
The people complaining are people who expect more from the hardware. This phone is a monster when it comes to specs, but its not showing it software wise, yet.
Personally, coming a blackberry, I don't notice any lag lol.
How you got install JI2... to make the phone run smoother. If you don't mind.
Love mine too...even more after rooting and debloating

Using Ji2 also. I haven't bass much problem with my phone, except for lousy 3G, which got better with Ji2, but is ultimately a network problem in my area.
GPS and compass were wonky, but Ji2 fixed that. I have never had the supposed lag that everyone talks about. Did they expect a beowulf cluster of MIT supercomputers under the touchscreen?
As some others have said, those who have problems tend to also run extensively modded ROMS and overclocked kernels, etc.

And those having problem with the battery life tend to talk and text and email..., you know, they use it too much like a smartphone....
I switched to the Vibrant from the iPhone 3GS since the contract was finished and I couldn't be happier. This screen leaves the self-promoting "retina" screen in the dust. Black is black on this phone, period. Looking back at the iPhone, the colors now seem to be washed out. The Vibrant is really so vibrant and so light that I can put it in the shirt pocket and don't notice anything. However, after two weeks, I start seeing some worrisome symptoms. Occasionally, the phone becomes so sluggish that only a reboot will fix. I can't let the phone running constantly for many days without rebooting to get the responsiveness back. Even when a call comes in, the screen just not responds to touch until 10 sec later. The System Sound turns itself back so loud that when you reboot the phone, you have to keep the finger on the loudspeaker hole in the back to keep the sound down in the office and then set the System Sound down again for quiet shutdown. In side my house, the signal strength drops to around 0. Many time the phone just does not bother searching for signal any more. When I get into the car and drive out, the phone does not refresh searching for signal. I have to manually turn off and then on the flight mode for the phone to wake up, search for signal and lock it. This relock is very quick, but it's annoying that I have to remember to give the phone a kick to search after it looses the signal for a while.
All problems above are small problems, but they remind me the symptoms of Microsoft Windows before Windows 7 finally came. Any one has the annoying problems that I have? Note that I have Android 1.2 update 1 and I do not have any issue with GPS. Overall it's a much better phone than the iPhone, since I don't have the feeling of locking into ONE company for hardware and for software and I don't have to jailbreak it to get what I want. Thank you for all you guys writing great software for the Android platform. Samsung did a good job with this phone. Maybe Android 2.2 fixes all issues above. Can't wait.

How's your battery life?
I love the screen, too, but after two months with the phone I can't wait for 2.2 to hopefully fix some of the issues, and 3.0 to revamp the UI a bit - it's just not as smooth as the iPhone. And I hate the battery life compared to the iPhone.
But, the screen rocks.

WidgetLocker

Have anyone tried WidgetLocker? What are your impressions on it? I've read is kinda slow on some phone, but what about on the Epic?

I purchased it shortly after I got my Epic, and after using a warez version for a while. It's pretty great, and isn't slow. It's not 100% seamless, but it's close enough to where you won't notice. The ability to hide the notification bar is great for privacy, its sliders are better than stock, and of course the ability to add widgets is nice. I'd take a screenshot, if I still had it set up (I haven't since I became a ROM developer ).
I also would like to say it is a very nice program and it is not slow runs great, I like the way you can have custom unlock open program sliders for fast access.
Cool, thanks for the replies
Its real nice, u can do a lot with it. The dev is good with support and its not slow.

I read somebody saying that widgetlocker increased his battery use and therefore was good but gave him trouble because of short battery life. It could be a single case or it could be a issue. What is you guys experience who used it?? Did you notice any increased battery drain??
I love widgetlocker! Total +1 for me. It cause a little slowdown back on my 528 mhz cliq, but even on that horrible phone it wasnt that bad. On the epic I agree its 99% flawless. If you go through the list of settings after buying it and set it up to your own personal specs, it dosen't use all that much battery.
As for the battery issue, Widgetlocker does cause a service to run all the time that it is enabled, but to be honest after looking at battery stats it dosen't use a whole lot over the course of a normal day. Especially not enough to be a dealbreaker unless your a total minimalist/battery nazi. The guy mentioned above probably have tons of other issues with his phone causing battery life to be ****ty IMO.
I recommend people set the "Root Bypass of 5 second rule" in the advanced options menu, then you dont have to run the icon in the notification bar all the time, nor do you have to use widgetlockers "homehelper" (If you never used it and have no idea what i'm talking about, no worries, just do this if you try it lol)
Other than that though it's great. Have had it on my Epic since day 1 when I installed my apps back. Always worked great. Updates have added some newer looks also. Tons of possibilities. Love love it.
Question for you guys I used it for awhile but even with the 5 sec root bypass it still took about 2-3 seconds for the lock to appear after waking my phone. You guys come across this?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
i use it and i havent had that problem. also if you want to theme your slider, there is a thread in the android theme section on how to do it.
