X10 coming to AT&T, 2.1 in Q4 - XPERIA X10 General

http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010...n=Feed:+TheBoyGeniusReport+(Boy+Genius+Report)
Not good news...looks like Q4 for 2.1.

Why do you say that? "Coming weeks" falls in line with the end of Q3 schedule quite nicely.

AT&T is too late.
x10 isn't as attractive than evo 4g or droid x or galaxy S.
Not to mention Iphone.
I don't see their sales will go up. Now if x10 was released in feb or match by At&T that's another story.

What do u mean x10 isn't attractive?Galaxy S is just another iphone ripoff, evo 4g looks like a brick sent into a squashing machine and while the droid x doesn't look too bad, it doesn't compare to the X10's design

what? are you serious ?

Sadly, North americans are people that sulk in pursuing numbers and names. Not their functions nor design.
If not then Iphone wouldn't be sold so many here. which iphone user actually looked into and compare the function of Iphone against other before buying an Iphone.
And evo 4g isn't really 4g (from what i read). But everyone think it is 4g and buy it out.
While functions, x10 lost to all the latest phones. The only thing that is attractive enough is SE's brand name, which some of us bought it because of it.

I'm not into names, numbers or looks, only function.
Bought the X10 because it was/is the largest screen Android phone in Canada with North American 3G. (wasn't going to pay $800 to import an N1)
Happy with Android 1.6 but wish it did BT Voice Dial.
Don't care about looks which is why I stuck a 2600mAh battery in it's butt
BTW, I also never understood the iPhone attraction.

x10 is very good looking in white or black, It fits in the hand good not like the hd2. Soon or later 2.1 would come, and I don't care about 2.2. Anyway, all I want to say is x10 is good and just give it a try.

Sorry, but your posts make no sense. The Evo 4G is 4G, which is available only in a very limited number of major American cities.
The Evo 4G is not a true competitor for any other phone because it is such a niche product.
The Galaxy S, Droid Incredible, Droid X, and Droid 2 are the X10's biggest competition, but I assume that AT&T will price the X10 accordingly (i.e. lower than the others).

hmm so where is HondaGuy? Any answers for doubting me that the X10 is coming to AT&T since I was the first to state it a while ago?
The AT&T logo appears only in the back on the cover, we get to keep our XPERIA logo on the front
And 2.1 will be ready near the end of Q3 in September, the Q4 one is something else Let's just say we will be happy 2 more times with our X10 before the year ends

As late as the x10 is coming into the game for the american market, I feel that it is still plenty competitive with other flagship smartphones. There are only few minor issues with the x10, being the lack of MT and the lower built in ram and rom.
If at&t markets the phone correctly to those looking for a high quality camera phone, I think the x10 can make a great impression. While looks is an interpretive concept, I have heard a lot of positive comments about the phone's design and imo is currently the best looking phone available with android. For those reasons, I think the x10 will definitely get some crapple converts.
Sent from my X10a using Tapatalk

The way that the 4 is selling out everywhere, no "crapple" owner is going to convert.
However, plenty of RIM users will jump onto the Android train.

These are hish wash here in the US. You go to ATT local store all you can see is selection of 10 crappy phone which they have put four of each in every corner (4x10 - 40 crappy phones) and a stand with iPhone on it. I have been ATT customer for 4 years now and I have never bought a phone from them. Phone Company in the US suck with no options. People don't care about the phone, as long as it has iphone options or some cool other feature or even if it doesn't.
We see the phones as gadget many people don't see it that way.
I wish t-mobile could bring their European policy here in the US.$0 for phone anything you like.
Let them be happy with their iPhone. as long as they are not using it for their pregnancy test.

Some reason I think X10 will do great in US.
When X10 was realesed, I doubted that it won't really do well in front of HTC and Motorola as it was Sony Ericsson's first Android device and no multitouch with 1.6
When I bought, I was amazed. I think the user experience is Brilliant!!! Top notch phone with hardware specs. The problem is not X10, it's the Sony Ericsson's delays with upgrades, but not to forget they are catching up. It's not they are not doing anything about it

Will the EVO out sell its upcoming competitors?

Love it or hate it, the iphone sells! Do you think the HTC EVO will be able to out sell its up coming rivals? We've had wind of 2 big ones so far, iphone 4g and Motorola Shadow. Battle of the titans... what do you think?
I think the evo will sell extremely well, but i doubt it will outsell the iphone. I expect it to be one of, if not the highest selling android phone so far though, outselling the droid or the incredible.

Agreed, the Droid was a success because so many people already had Verizon, but now people are actually switching over to Sprint just to get ahold of this handset. So yeah, it'll definitely be up there among high selling android devices but the iPhone? No way.
Millions of brain-washed Apple hipster followers will buy the iPhone without question. I think the EVO has potential to be the best-selling Android device for the upcoming future, but no way will a single Android device outsell an iPhone.
I agree with everyone else. It will not outsell the iPhone.
By the way OP, you made the poll multiple choice (?).

It really is sad how people think the iphone is such a godly product and buy it only because it will make them look cool...
Not going to lie, i LOVED the iphone for a while, but that was only because for a time period i really liked the OS, not so much the hardware specs...but they are alright... think it is still a great device. But, then i was introduced to android, and i never looked back!
i dont know how many of you have noticed how much baaaaaad press apple has been gettin in the last few months...
most of my friends who used to swear by Iphone are starting to second guess themselves
im not saying it will outsell the iphone but unless S. Jobs comes out with some Off the wall type **** here in July i think the Iphones "deathgrip" will begin to decline
Come on serious. they sold a million ipads in just one week. the ipad is just 10 ipod touches put together.
So like you said, love it or hate it. i dont think the evo will out sale the iphone 4g or iphone hd whatever it might get call, but the Evo will sure sell enuff to be the top selling android phone at the moment
|I think the Evo has a good chance to beat out the new iPhone. Honestly, the ONLY thing the iPhone has going for itself is the App store. Whenever someone compares a uiphone to another phone, they always bring up the Apple App store, but what they should really bring up is the specs. The new iphone will probably have 2 cameras, just like the Evo. But I doubt one of the cameras will be a 8MP camera. Also I don't think the new iPhone will be as fast as fast as the Evo. I've had all versions of the iphone. I also had a Moto droid, HTC Hero and now the Evo. And let me tell you the Evo blows the iphone out the box and all those other phones. I think the Answer lies with the Service Providers. Att has a lot of customers and a lot of them have the iPhone. Would they be willing to switch over to Sprint? I think that if they actually had the chance to hold the Evo and play with it for awhile they'll be sold. I sold my iPad wifi version to get the iPad 3g/wifi version, I then sold that to buy one of these Google I/O Evo's and I don't regret any of it.
I'm going to go out on the ledge and honestly say, "I think the Evo will out sell the iPhone" in the States. And the reason I say in the states is because the iPhone, iPad and touch is all sold overseas as well and I think, the Evo is only sold in the States.
I agree with the majority here. I just sold my iPhone to beat the rush of them on the market after next Friday. I can hardly wait to get my Evo. That being said, I don't think the Evo will outsell the iPhone. Wally World is selling 16GB 3GS phones for $97 and the 4th generation will be released next month. Add to that the possibility of a Verizon iPhone...
No chance of outselling the iPhone, Android just doesn't have that reality distortion field yet. The gap is ever narrowing though, and the EVO has gone a very long way in bringing Android to the forefront of people's minds, even to non-techies.

Why doesn't T-mobile ever step up.....

On things like this to offer their customers.......WTF???
http://phandroid.com/2010/09/03/sprint-to-get-the-samsung-galaxy-tab-this-november/
Even if Sprint does NOT get it why doesn't Tmo say "hey we'll take it!!"
When it comes to agreements between 2 or more business goliaths, I don't think its as simple as we'll take it. Lots of legal matters to get sorted out. Just look at all the drama it took to get the iPhone on AT&T to start with. They battled over details for awhile and still had issues after the release. Don't even wanna go into foreget tablets. Can we at least get a good list of smartphones on T-Mobile? One great phone and one very respectable phone (see Vibrant then MyTouch Slide) does not make for good choices when time to upgrade.
I was extremely excited about this Galaxy Tab, but in reality, the price is kind of a dealbreaker, and as far as I can tell, there is no wi-fi only version. I am not paying for another device on the network.
But as far as why T-mobile doesn't step up: it is just like mmalott says. Contracts have so many intricacies, so many things that have to get ironed out.
But for what it's worth, you don't know that they won't make it available for T-mobile yet. Maybe Samsung will go to all 4 carriers with it, you never know. We'll have to wait and see.

The price is way to high for what is. For that price I can get a small fully functioning laptop that folds into a touch tablet.

I'm happy that T-Mo is not trying to get all these first-gen experimental devices but focusing on the few solid and core devices along with providing great services.
This is what a normal consumer really needs.

that. plus there's the fcc approvals needed for each band/network it supports.
I've seen websites saying Verizon is getting it to, it's not unlikely that they are just releasing on all the carriers like they have with the Galaxy S series. They aren't even out of here yet are they? Didn't this happen before with the Galaxy S series, one company said we are getting it then the others followed?

My man/girl where on earth did you get the notion that I was Sprint fan? I have been with Tmo for 7+ years and would not even think about switching services!!! My original point being is why doesn't Tmo "make a play" for things such as the Tablet or even a good , better, best smartphone, even if we do not get them?
Granted given the response by "mmalot" looking at it that way I completely see why Tmo has taken the path it has.
I am happy with Tmo no doubt but I just wish their aggressiveness would equate to a better selection of phone choices, granted the Vibrant which I love is no slouch even with it shortcomings is still a great phone in its own rights.
Regarding a phone such as the G2 which has not come out yet I am sure it will be a worthy opponent I am NOT bashing Tmo I am suggesting that they become slightly more aggressive.
Make sure you have a valid point or even comprehend the statement that is in front of you before you go "bumping your gums" and comment such as you have done.
And in closing I do not have a problem with Tmo as I stated have been a loyal customer for 7+ years (when they were voicestream wireless)and will remain a customer but I like everyone else am entitled to their opinion and I will exercise it at will "heygrl", so please do not try and come at me like I am coming from left field, it was a "freedom of speech" moment.
I do know that a lot of the times the carriers have to bid on the phones/devices that they get. Depending on the manufacturer/device. Would you rather have a g2, mytouch hd, and possibly 2-3 other big devices by the end of the year, or would you rather have a galaxy S that is a little bit larger, without the Super amoled? Do remember that T-Mobile is dropping a ton of funds on rocking out the HSPA+ across the country super fast, and they're the 4th largest carrier. They have to choose a lot more carefully about where to invest then the others.
If someone has a vibrant now, the g2 wil be irrelevant by the time they have to upgrade again. Should not be releasing phones so fast, imo.
Also I may etf my contact and move off android because the fragmentation and slow updates/buggy devices are unbearable.
Almost regret not staying on at&t and getting am iphone. This is ridiculous.

If you like locked down fancy looking feature phones and a barely working network then ATT is for you, and they'll gladly take your money, enjoy you iPhone 4, we don't care, it's your money
At the end of the day the real reason we're all with tmobile (don't lie) is because of their great plans/ pricing and awesome customer service. If that wasn't the case we'd be all on verizon. I think their approach with the vibrant/g2/faster network this year will play out very well for them.
I hate when people get offended if you tell your opinion about a company. Heygrl the way you reacted on the last page was childish. Grow up, I dont understand why people pledge loyalty to a company then act like blinded fanboys if you tell the truth about them.
T-Mobile obviously needs to step up. Whether they get this tablet or not isn't a dealbreaker for me. Especially if there is no wifi only version. However they need more phones, more high end state of the art phones. Verizon and Sprint are rumored to release 1.5 Ghz phones this year, they are not slouching. The G2's hardware will be completely obsolete by 2011, it will be a new generation of hardware. People seem to think this phone is the best ever because of HSPA+. What happens when you never reach those plateaus of speed and the first dual-core devices drop this year? Gonna feel buyers remorse huh.
It's also rumored that Samsung is working on the Galaxy S2 phone with a 2Ghz processor, 4gb of rom, 1gb ram, super amoled2 and 340ppi. Now THAT'S a revolution, but you ignorant fanboys would never see that because your devoted loyalty to a company makes you think the G2 will be the best phone ever. Such a joke...
HTC has a conference in a week or so, you think their best announcement will be the G2? Come on now. They are working on 1.5-2ghz phones, new battery and screen tech, and dual core devices.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Even though I don't always agree with Tmobile's business sense I do like their more conservative nature. I don't need 3-5 phones with 2ghz cpus and the latest greatest iPhone at the cost dealing with the stereotypical corporate giant. All I ask for is at least 1 -2 comparable smartphones (MyTouch Slide & Vibrant delivered beautifully), good customer service, and keep your hands out of my pockets. I think T-Mobile has done an outstanding job at doing this. Dealing with Tmo has been a personal experience as compared to dealing with AT&T which was the usual your-the-little-guy thing.
Tmo has left me in wonder plenty of times. Where I live just got 3g but they were trying to sell me a 3G phone prior to that? Why are you guys selling the MyTouch Slide for only $20 less then the Vibrant? Am I missing something there? You guys are rolling out 4G!? But... there's plenty of places that don't even have coverage, EDGE, or 3G yet? Just some of the things that make me scratch my head sometimes but in the end, AT&T and Verizon don't leave me with the satisfaction that T-Mobile does.
Personally I don't want or need 20 smartphones to choose from. Too many problems for the network, the consumer, and the manufactures which will leave more often then not unhappy under the quantity over quality method of thinking.
At the end of the day its your choice based on your experiences and opinion. And this is a forum where people voice experiences and opinion. Just wish people could be more civilized about it so that others can hear/read them without the annoying gibberish.
I guess the real reason that people are so upset with T-mobile is because T-mobile was the first with an android phone and the first with the Google Nexus One phone, and they have lost that crown.
After Sprint got the HTC Hero, T-mobile wasn't the only android carrier anymore, and when Verizon got the Droid, they decided to buy up 95% of the high-end android smart-phones for the next 1.5 years.
AT&T rode iPhone popularity to the top. T-mobile failed to do this with Android. Looking at Android growth & popularity, locking up a few high end exclusives over the next 2-3 years could have propelled T-mobile into 3rd place in terms of subscribers. If I were to guess, then I would say that this is the reason why the CEO got the boot.
T-mobile is not doing that bad...what they aren't doing is beating out the competition with any of their handsets. Everything they release is done bigger or better by another carrier.
Its not as exciting as a 4G release, or a heavily marketed branded line of android phones like Verizon does... but clear away the smoke and mirrors and you'll have to admit that T-mobile is probably tied for 2nd at best (with Sprint), or at worst 3rd overall on android handsets.
The only thing they are missing is a 4.3" high end device to be the definitive 2nd place android carrier.
As for being #1... it won't ever happen. Verizon has 3x the subscribers and charges 20% more for service. They have the cash to burn to stay on top in terms of handset selection.... which they pretty much have to because iPhone lovers will never leave AT&T until the handset is available elsewhere

AT&T Snags New Android Gingerbread Smartphone

AT&T seems to be a roll ever since its lost exclusivity to the iPhone 4. In their build up of high-end Android smartphones to match the lineup of the Verizon iPhone and Droids, AT&T has already delivered us the HTC Inspire 4G, Motorola Atrix 4G and shortly the Samsung Infuse 4G. However a recent FCC filing of the Android 2.3 Gingerbread Sony Xperia Arc shows that AT&T has another high-end Android headed its way.
Sony Xperia Arc joining Motorola Atrix, HTC Inspire, Samsung Infuse
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc packs a super slim body, 4.2-inch touchscreen display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 512MB RAM, a microSD slot with upto 32GB storage support, 1500 mAh battery and the icing on the cake, Android 2.3 Gingerbread preloaded.
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc passed through the FCC sporting GSM AT&T bands (including HSPA/HSUPA, UTMS 2/5).
Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc release date and price tag unconfirmed
AT&T has yet to announce the price or release date of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc but word on the street has speculated an April release date and $750 unlocked price tag at this time.

Anyone think Arc has a better chance than X10 on AT&T? I still prefer the style of X10 over Atrix, HTC Inspire, and Samsung Infuse but I doubt the common customer will care about SE's Arc just like they didn't care about X10.
I've been mostly using SE phones (X10) every since I got W910. After reading about Samsung Infuse here , I am seriously thinking to jump from SE train as to me Arc already looks outdated compared to many of the Android phones already out there on AT&T and T-mobile. No front camera, no dedicated Search button, less RAM compared to the other latest phones, etc, etc.
If Infuse is no different than the other cheap Samsung crap, I might still be back to Arc but just can't get why SE still keeps announcing their phones way ahead of release date and then make them look outdated when it finally gets to the customer. They should have at least got a front camera on Arc to attract new customers instead of just SE fans. I know most of us here don't care about front camera nor do people who really care about it probably won't use it but if they want to sell phones, this is almost mandatory these days.
must admit I would have gone for the neo, if I wasn't so seduced by the look of the arc.. Front camera would be good. SE said they couldn't fit one into the body of the arc.

I really don't get why everyone wants a front camera? Does anyone ever do video calls? It's bloody weird talking to your phone, holding it in front of you! I've honestly never seen anyone do it, even though we have nationwide 3G and a lot of people have a phone with a front-facing camera!

It's not about using. It is one of those features that is usually one of the top features listed when comparing features. Front camera's were quite common few years back in SE's dumb phones like W910. Since it's being hardly used they probably decided to leave it out. But once, iPhone 4 got that feature everyone (even the freakin media) talk like iPhone invented it. But iPhone 4 sure did a great job in making it work on WiFi.
Maybe Arc not having front camera is good for us as SE has to price it low or drop the price pretty fast as it will be a hard sell for them when compared to the competition. Especially on AT&T as most common people will fall for dual-core/front facing camera of Atrix, huge screen of Samsung Infuse, or low price of HTC Inspire. So, it will be X10 all over again for Arc on AT&T. I hope it can be purchased for $399 without contract like I got X10.

Aha, so it's more due to the stupidity of the average American customer
Well, if you want a simfree contractless phone you could always have one shipped from Europe! Don't count on $399 though, $499 would be more in line with the EU prices.

AT&T dropped Atrix 4G no-commitment price to $499 and HTC Inspire is only $399. I hope they get Arc soon. It definitely has to be $499 or even less as Moto is much more popular seller for AT&T than our beloved SE.

They want to give more money to ATT. In the past ATT charged extra for video calling and had special plans in place. Now you will have to have wifi connection or huge data plan to use video.

HTC EVO 4G is Q2′s Best Selling Android According to NPD

Wow!! I think the XDA Developers have a lot to do with this!
A recent NPD report hit showing the best selling smartphones of Q2 and guess who’s number one, well sorta. The HTC EVO 4G is arguably one of our favorite smartphones of all time and it came in at number three on the list, but was the top selling Android of Q2. Coming in behind the phone with the fruit (iPhone 3GS & iPhone 4), which makes sense when you consider the iPhone 4 relaunched on Verizon and the fact that AT&T has practically been giving away the 3GS. Such impressive sales numbers makes it hard to believe that the EVO 4G released well over a year ago, especially when comparing it to some of the smartphones of today. This really makes us wonder which phone will overtake the original EVO’s run as Sprint’s most successful selling handset? These stats also make us want to chant, “we’re number one, we’re number one!” Well not exactly, but you get the point viva EVO!

What's crazy, is that the Evo is on "end of life" status, meaning they aren't producing it anymore. I would still take the Evo for $100 before I would spend $200 on the photon or the 3D.

Yea that sux, I can't believe they are getting rid of it. I love my OG Evo...
As solid as the phone is, I feel the developer community with the myriad of custom roms and kernels help put it on top. Well, I should include Sprint's pricing plans as well. Outstanding value combination!

AT&T - Atrix at "end of life"

Interesting post from the Moto forums today. This makes perfect sense given the way AT&T has been going the last few months:
"posted 3:08 PM by billsite34
I was at an ATT store this morning inquiring about a laptop dock for my Atrix. They couldn't find it on their website(discontiued), then they said that the original Atrix was at "end of life" as far as ATT was concerned. I take this to mean that ATT will no longer support the Atrix and not push for ICS from Motorola for it!"

ugh. F motorola.
next phone won't be a motorola. sadly. don't much like any of the other phones.
Sadly I will probably go with a Samsung. If I were to get one tomorrow, it would be the Skyrocket (there's LTE here).
Yeah, I would go back to samsung (skyrocket) I had a captivate before the ATRIX.

And just because Att will not carry it anymore you think it's the end of the Atrix?

Eh, get used to it. Buy whatever is the best phone at the time and understand that it will be completely outdated in 6 months.
Oh, and don't buy the hype that the ATT store salesmen sell. Some of them are a little dense.

Couldn't agree more. I have a close friend who works at a corporate store and all he says is that they are told to push IPHONEs. I tell him Fkuc you my friend, and then we have drinks.

Its one thing for a carrier to stop selling a phone after that, but if the phone is only supported by the manufacture for 6 months, there is a serious issue. Especially given that a bar has been set for about 2 years by both Apple and Google on Nexus devices, and that 2 years is the length of the average US contract.
I think this is being read into wrong though. AT&T most likely is just no longer selling the OG model, not Motorola discontinuing support.
I have not given up on ICS yet, but I think it is unlikely to come to the Atrix 4G. I realized that when I recognized the Atrix 2 was a cost reduced version of the 4G. My theory is that MOTO marketing f'd up big time when they over priced the Atrix and accessories. The Atrix 2 was doomed because the Atrix name was damaged beyond reclamation.
I don't see any new phone presently available that is significantly better and some worse. Posts like the one that started this thread hasten the day when I say, "enough already" and install cm7/9.

Following up on myself, I don't understand why Moto won't just say what their plans for the Atrix 4G and ICS are and take the heat and get it over with.
The guys who run the forum at moto remind me of the man who played piano in a cathouse and always claimed he never knew what was going on up stairs.

Atrix, dead in a year. 3GS going on 3 years. Makes me sick...

I'm a little surprised Atrix is getting dropped cause it was such a big deal when it came out. If Apple makes the iPhone 5 with a bigger screen, I'm getting it. Atleast Apple won't drop support for it. That's one of the reasons Android pisses me off. Stop making 200 different Android phones a month, and concentrate more on updates. You've got phones coming out that people forget about in a month.

so much for a device demoed and praised at CES..
Time Line:
Q1:
CES Jan 2011: Demonstrated and Praised as one of the best devices at that CES.
Feb/March 2011: Launched
Q3:
GB update
Q4:
Still GB updates
end of Q4:
EOL
im not purchasing any moto devices on older OS anymore..
should have not purchased Froyo atrix while GB was around and shall not purchase GB Razr when ICS is around..
/* Rant mode off
I still do not regret purchase of atrix; thankful to QUALITY of dev support it is receiving. Even pre-Betas for atrix are more stable than final releases of my older devices (captivate and vibrant)
But for a general user who wouldnot think of anything beyond rooting...this is kind of abuse :-/
Guys its not MOTO. ATT has final say on all updates for its phones. Only way around it is the Icrap and A Nexus.
Once Google slows the OS updates down to once maybe twice a year like they plan it will be less of a prob

ATT is not the only vendor but looking at the update history so far, it would be too late to expect ICS for atrix considering delay in GB update.
I believe the statement this guy posted is true regarding the Atrix 4G and AT&T. If you look on the AT&T website you cannot buy the laptop dock anymore on either the regular store or the premier store. AT&T previously told me that when an item is removed from there instead of being marked "out of stock", it's gone for good. AT&T is selling off Atrix accessories, and I do believe they are done with the Atrix. Will they still sell it?...............sure, until the stock is depleted.............will it still be around for a long time?.............sure............the refurbs will be going round and round for years to come.
What is perturbing is that this phone lasted a measly 6 months or so, as was already stated. Nobody disputes that phones come and go, new models are released, etc.............what is messed up is that people who purchased "the most powerful cell phone on the planet" were lied to about the specs by both AT&T and Moto, one case in point being 1080p recording which we never got, and have suffered lack luster support from both entities.
I love my Atrix, and will keep it as long as devs are putting out new ROM's, etc., but I am up for an upgrade again in less than 2 months, and will look for something with more support. Unfortunately I am stuck with AT&T for the time being because I have a family plan with 5 phones on it, and who would pay early termination on 5 phones?
This is my 4th Android phone. Like someone else said, 3gs was supported for least 3 years. I think I want to try an apple phone next. We shouldn't have to rely on outside people/unofficial support for the next version of Android.

The reason they push a new product every 6 months or so is reflected on the attitudes of most android forums; never satisfied, always desiring something more from their devices. People make lateral device changes (Atrix to Moto RAZR for example) instead of upgrades because there is some level of constant dissatisfaction with their Android device. Companies such as motorola are catering to this, and making tons of money in the process. Why bother support a device for multiple years when people are willing to shell out gobs of cash for Android's 'flavor of the week'? It makes more money for the company and the carrier.
You have to remember that the carrier not the device manufacturer decides what phones make it to market. Apple was wise to keep their warranty and product support in-house, and their quality and support reflects as much. Other phone manufacturers are bent over the carriers' knee. The carrier dictates how long the phone is supported, what accessories are available, and how software updates get pushed. Apple was wise to circumvent all this BS, and look how many iPhone accessories there are in every store, how Apple pushes software updates via their own program, ultimately you get an overall better product that is supported for much longer, while still maintaining profitability.
I love Android as a product, but what an abysmal business model for an open source-based OS. The only thing that keeps me going on Android are the occasional product gems such as the Atrix and the unofficial support provided from devs around the world.
Lets face it, Android owners still look to Apple as the golden standard.
