OTA Update issues - EVO 4G General

So I have Unrevoked3, and want to update OTA, I don't need root anymore.
However, when I update it goes to start the update, then I get a yellow triangle with an exclamation point and an android, it just sits there til I pull the battery.
I want to be sure this is just an issue with needing to unroot, and not something else.
If its just an unrooting issue, how do I unroot from Unrevoked3? All the unrooting topics I've found were for toast or simpleroot.

Btw, the RA is Clockwork recovery.

Pretty sure all you need to do is put the update on your SD card, flash it, and then you're done. You'll lose root, but it should work that way. YMMV and all that.

I'll try it when I get home, hopefully it'll work.

any word? I too am having the yellow triangle displayed on my screen when trying to install the OTA after doing Unrevoked 3

Nevermind, Im downloading now.
Im also downloading the 1.47 RUU incase I need to start from scratch, which Ive heard works with revoke.. Im just not sure how to reflash the stock recovery image and get rid of Clockwork Mod and Unrevoked.
I ran flash sdcard:update.zip and so far its updating with no issues, will wait for boot up to see if it took.

I think using the ruu is the only way to reset the recovery, anyway thats what I did and d/ling the OTA now.

Worked fine. Booted up took a bit, but Im used to that with all updates, Im now running Android 2.2
As a side, is the FroYo update supposed to wipe apps/settings? Mine werent.

well mine seemed to work, I didn't care about reseting so my process went like this..
completely stock+unrevoked3 root+clockworkmod
RUU_Supersonic_1.47.651.1_Radio_2.05.00.06.10_release_CL195459.exe
OTA d/l and installed over 1.47
ota installed successfully
factory defaulted with 2.2 in place

Im running 2.2, but none of my settings were reset and all my apps are still there.

Does running this : RUU_Supersonic_1.47.651.1_Radio_2.05.00.06.10_rele ase_CL195459.exe erase all of the phone's previous memory?

Yes.
It does not erase your sd card tho.

So unrevoked 3 users can't use the Froyo OTA update?

I was still rooted... Maybe the server's being swamped...
well it finished downloading. so i dont' know. tried doing unrooting with one click but not working so no im stuck. bootstrap or any app i need to uninstalled?
anyone extracting update.zip?
same here. i tried to install the update file but i reboot into clockworkmod recovery and it tells me i failed to update
Working good, now we'll need to divide the forum questions Before Froyo BF and After Froyo AF. No bugs yet, though flash doesn't quite match lip sync, not too sure if it's the site or not.
Worked great, tried flash and that works beautifully. Phone sure seems to be a bit smoother. I had rooted the phone and I unrooted it before performing the OTA update.

Ok, my way worked. All you need to do, is to hard reset, reactivate your phone, and download ota update. It totally worked!
Noobie here..when you say hard set, what exactly do you mean. Do I need to unroot the phone first and then hardset, then go to (with verizon) *228 and ativate?

Well... I tried factory reset and reactivated.. still gets hung up and resets after its reboot to the recovery screen. Comes back with "update failed"
The only thing I had done at one time or another was Koush's Clockwork boot and root.
I had unrooted and uninstalled Kouch's stuff.. then factory reset and reinstalled, same thing. The update will download.. boots to recovery screen, get 1/4 way, error triangle, reboot, "update failed"..
Any ideas? Is there something from Koush's stuff that is hanging around, evern after an uninstall?
I'd really like to get the OTA update!!
Thanks!

Anyone know if I need to backup first? I haven't rooted it, I just have a couple dozen apps installed and don't want to lose my text messages and any other information.

Re root incredible after ota?

Is it possible to re root the incredible after you apply the OTA or is it still broken?
if you have s-off, its just update, place the recovery image on the sd card, reboot into into hboot, and hit yes to upgrade and then itll flash the custom recovery and all is good
I am curious of this too. As mine is s-on and now I can't reroot. It gets to the part where it says it is "waiting for root" and never goes any further.
as of right now unrevoked will not work after the latest update is applied.
Do NOT update if you want to keep root....
If your running a rom built with the latest version this update won't come to you anyway.
If you see the update then you are using a rom that is built with old code.... tell the rom developer to update his shiat! If HTC can come out with updates faster then your rom developer can.... should you be using his rom?
And I assume there is no other way to root other than unrevoked?????? Surely the developers of unrevoked are working on finding the loop hole? I hope anyway. I miss my root apps that I had on my droid!
You can root without unrevockeds method. I can't remeber the exact procedure as i dont even know what i did wholly. But it involved unrooting but leaving the app and su. Upgrading to the proper baseband. Receiving the ota then pushing su again. I did this a few months ago though right after the 2.2 ota update. Took me like 3 hours to achieve root. If your interested i can try to repeat my method tomorrow and report back.
Sent from Conical. 07
or just downgrade.. reroot, have s-off, then update, then reroot
I like the downgrade idea. But I come from the motorola droid so I know the procedures are a lot different. I am not a noob by any means on rooting but I am to this phone. Could you please walk me through it and point me in the direction of the files??
Man I wish I read this thread before doing the OTA manually. I upgraded the OTA last night and my phone had S-on. Everything was ok, until I tried to install the payload zip and Superuser zip from Clockwork afterward. Before I did that, I was able to boot in the phone after the OTA even with Clockwork but after applying those 2 zip files, my phone will go in a loop after the droid animation and back to the HTC screen and forever stuck in reboot. I was so freaked out but with clockwork I just flashed wipe everything and installed Virtuous 3.1. Everything is working fine now, but if you do the OTA, do not install SU and payload in Clockwork
So you can do the OTA on a rooted phone running a custom rom?

Not sure if the 10/13 build of Virtuous 3.1 already have the OTA or not. At this point, I kind of don't really care, just glad I have my phone up and running again. Plus unless you really want Bloatware, most of the changes don't seem to be that signficiant. Here's the change log
* Updated Flash Player with security enhancements
* Visual Voice Mail Wifi improvements and removal of incorrect service messages and post-call notifications
* Better support for Yahoo IMAP e-mail
* Update to Slacker Radio app
* You can attach files larger than 5MB
* Updated Cox POP3 e-mail settings
* Updated Comcast POP3 e-mail settings
* Play YouTube videos in the YouTube app (that's new?)
* Seamlessly switch between portrait/landscape in Google Maps
* Search key and other buttons displayed in the correct order (what's the wrong order?)
* VCAST app lets you bill apps to your Verizon account
Yeah. Lots of Bloatware. I just flashed the 10/13 "almost"stock ROM over my previous ROM and everything works fine. Battery life is great with the new stock kernel. I'm not using setcpu. Quadrant speed is lower but the phone is very fast. BT connects much better although I find BT volume to be low. 3G is very stable. I had to go back into ADB and remove VCast, VVM etc but that's not too big a deal.
ok so i have s-off and cant reroot using the unrevoked3. it hangs at the waiting for root screen. can i just apply the clockworkmod update zip and call it a day to get root again
I can't seem to get a clear answer on this: Do I need to have the stock recovery to successfully install this OTA? I have S-OFF and Clockworkmod, and so far I haven't figured out for sure if I should accept the OTA through the dialog, or if I can apply it through ROM Manager, or if I can apply it through Clockworkmod. Can anyone clear this up for me?

The update will go through HBOOT, you can update with clockwork and s-off. though it seems from what i've read in this thread if you do you will no longer be rooted.
I remeber what i did for the 2.2 update. What i did was restore the stock recovery but leave su and superuser. This makes the phone look stock without root. Then take the ota. Reflash clockworkmod. Su and superuser apk should still be there. Then use a super usr app. Im pretty sure thats what i did to reroot
Edit. This process assumes that su and superuser.apk are on the phone and not removed.

Gingerblur to Gingerbread

Ok i've searched the forums and am getting more and more confused. I have gingerblur 3.1 installed currently and would like to do the ATT ota update. Can I just download it and install from the system update? Or do I need to wipe the whole phone clean and start over? Thanks and sorry if this is a duplicate.
I am wondering this too...

I'm in the same boat, I got GingerBlur 4.5 installed and I would like to install the Gingerbread 4.5.19 OTA update. Are there proper instructions out there? I can't find any. I'm assuming I may have to go back to Stock 1.8.3 and do an OTA update. But can someone please confirm. Any instructions would help as well. Thanks
The directions I seem to need are...
Un gingerblur
Un root
As an aside, I got notified of the ota and it failed.

Make sure your battery is fully charged so that you don't run out of power during the upgrade process.
To install the upgrade:
Copy the file to the SD Card
Your phone is on the latest Android 2.2 software (Blur_Version.4.1.83.MB860.ATT.en.US)
From the home screen, press Menu, select Settings,
Scroll down and select About Phone.
Select System upgrades.
After a couple of minutes, your device will confirm the upgrade is available.
The Copy prompt will appear. Select “Copy”
The Install upgrade prompt will appear. Select Install Now.
Your device will power off and display installation progress.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Please ensure you are aware of the following information after the installation of the package
It will then power up and stay on the carrier logo for up to 5 minutes before powering on to the home screen.
Please do not interrupt this process.
Contacts and email from Google and MOTOBLUR may take up to 60 minutes to synchronize. The phone may appear slower during this initial synchronization process
I am in the same boat as that guy with gingerblur 4.5 .
I don't have an sd card around me atm so would putting the file on the internal storage work or not?

i tried to install the OTA update, it failed... tried to install it manually and it didn't work either. i tried to install it using android recovery and it didn't work.
Im using gingerblur 4.5
side note,
can any one of you please provide the full name of your system version? mine says "Version.4.1.83.MB860.ATT.en.US ", thing is, I tried to flash a stock sbf to roll back to motoblur, RSDlite fails every time with a message "sec_exception febe 35 35", my phone isn't recognized as 'NS Flash Olympus', it shows 'SE Flash Olympus'.
is there a thread to fix this issue?
thanks!
I figured out how to do it. First I unlocked the bootloader and then followed the directions on here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163342
Worked fine
You need to flash back to stock, i.e. flash 4.1.26 or 4.1.57 or 4.1.83. OTA update to 4.1.83 if you are on an earlier version. The update will not work if you are modded in any way. You need to be on stock 4.1.83.
My god, how many times does this have to be said!!!
So let's just say that you are a moron (like me) and just did the OTA over Gingerblur 4.5 and now you have the exclamation point triangle and android on your screen and it does do anything... is it safe to battery pull? or did I just brick my phone?
EDIT: nevermind...
Is there any guide how to flash back?...

Well you could use rsd if you've never installed the GB ota.

I was on gingerblur 4.5, rooted, sideload enabled.
used RSD to flash 4.1.83 - successful - booted - checked mail - etc...
went to Motorolla.com and DL the official firmware
copy .zip to sd
settings/about/upgrade
let it run
followed instructions to the letter from Motorola
30 minutes now on the Rethink Possible screen - seems like a fail?
Help?
Update - she lives, just needed to wait about 45 minutes

Concerned about rooting

I'm concerned about rooting or modifying my Atrix a second time. My first Atrix that I had rooted stopped working when I tried to update the OS through the wi-fi download of the update. Mid-way through, the Android mascot and the exclamation sign came up and I had to pull the battery. When I rebooted the phone it said the modem failed to start up. I don't know the reason for it but I went to the store and used my insurance to get a fresh one. Since then, I have only sideloaded apps and now with the Gingerbread update I don't have to use a USB cord to install apps anymore. I'm afraid to try to root or modify my Atrix again.

Rooting should not have given you that problem. I've rooted numerous A4g's on froyo and they are all running GB fine after the ota. I also re-rooted them all now that they have GB. No issues. Also if your atrix didn't give you a boot error right when you turned it on you could have manually flashed a build and wouldn't have had to use you insurance.

Alright, that eases my mind. Perhaps I just had some hardware failure.
How does rooting affect everything? Like you said, you are able to update via OTA when rooted and everything is fine. I also have a question about how to root exactly. I saw the sticky but it only mentioned the leaked release of Gingerblur and not the OTA version. Does the information still apply?
Its a little more involved if don't have your bootloader unlocked. Follow the post mramirezusa has about automatic unlocked bootloader and root.

Actually, thats not true. I was running on stock 8.6.5.6 rooted, and was able to update sucessfully. I verified the update in the settings. I have also verified with root checker that i am no longer rooted, as i was before the update. I bought my transformer only a few weeks ago. It came with 3.1 and i updated to 3.2 before rooting. Wonder if that or the rooting method has something to do with why i was able to update while rooted.

Same happened to me. As I understand it just rooting doesn't prevent future OTA updates, hence why I was prompted to download this latest, but why it now after failing it tells me there is no longer an update available is beyond me. I can only think ASUS has pulled it for some reason.

Hmm interesting.
Which method did you use to root it?
Maybe we can pin point why the updates are failing for some people after rooting. I would like to root mine if it was 100% that the OTA updates would still work, even if I had to root it again after each one.

I'm having problems with OTA updates and have used Brk's ASUS Transformer HC3.2 RootKit Script to root my device.
I probably did something very stupid...in which I factory reset the device, but noticed that "superuser" is still installed in the apps list. I'm wondering now if i have to re root the device to uninstall superuser and then do another factory reset and then see if the OTA update works? suggestions appreciated
I always look at the updater script in the package before I update. This script contains a bunch of asserts that check the integrity of certain files before it will apply the update. If you can get the update package just open " \META-INF\com\google\android\updater-script" with notepad and that will show everything that's happening when the update occurs including the file asserts it makes. If you've modified these files then it will not update. 8.6.5.6 initially didn't work for me but by checking the script I found the problem was my srs_processing.cfg file because I tried to fix my speaker balance and this was a file that the script asserted. After restoring the original file I was able to update with stock recovery even though I had modified other system files. As long as the specific files the update checks are ok the update will proceed.

You can re-download the update if you clear your DMClient cache.
Follow the instructions in this thread.

I had the error with the Android + exclamation mark so I unrooted (reflashed both the stock ROM AND the stock recovery - to get rid of clockworkmod) then cleared the DMClient cache and was I able to update OTA.
As far as I am aware the OTA will not install if you have clockwork Mod flashed for recovery. But if you have rooted without flashing over stock recovery ie clockwork mod not installed the OTA should work but you will lose root by updating.

Same thing happened to me. Tried all the above, and can't get the update to come back.
Have any of you changed original system files whilst rooted? That's why it was failing for me. I managed to get the update again but it failed. I got it once more after it rebooted but took a copy first, unrooting made no difference. Unlike the downloadable firmwares from the ftp site which I checked out, the update script checks the integrity of a ton of files mainly the system apps that cannot be changed without root. If any have changed the script aborts.
Unfortunately even though I had backed up all of them with Titanium Backup, it wouldn't restore them and TB just hung. I tried all its options but nothing helped - a little worrying.
In the end I copied off the TB backup directory to a USB stick and used the NVflash recovery to restore back to factory. I then performed the upgrade again to both the tablet and dock without issues. Four hours later I have it almost back to where I want it.
Hope this helps some of you, even though it's not the best process, but the update imho is worth it
