Sprint Launches 4G Coverage in Delaware, Florida and Michigan and Extends 4G Coverage in California
Modesto, Calif., Stockton, Calif., Jacksonville, Fla., Wilmington, Del., and Grand Rapids, Mich., Launched Today
OVERLAND PARK, Kan., Aug 02, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) --
Today, Sprint (NYSE:S) unveiled 4G service to populous areas of California, Delaware, Florida and Michigan. With today's launches of Modesto, Calif., Stockton, Calif., Jacksonville, Fla., Wilmington, Del., and Grand Rapids, Mich., Sprint boasts 48 metropolitan areas enabled with the new mobile broadband service, which allows for Internet traffic at super fast speeds. Unlike competitors, Sprint is the first national wireless carrier to actually launch wireless 4G technology in cities across the country. Wilmington, Jacksonville and Grand Rapids are the first cities in Delaware, Florida and Michigan to offer 4G service.
With 4G, Sprint customers experience fast mobile downloads, streaming video without the lag, and turbo-charged Web browsing. This new wireless technology boasts download speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G.1 Users can video chat with friends and family via the popular HTC EVO(TM) 4G, America's first 3G/4G wireless smartphone. And in the near future, Sprint customers will be able to purchase Samsung Epic(TM) 4G, the company's second 4G enabled smartphone.
With the Overdrive(TM) 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot by Sierra Wireless, users can create a 4G hotspot on the road or at home. With the Sprint Free Guarantee, customers can try 4G for 30 days and if they are not satisfied, they can cancel service and have the opportunity to be fully reimbursed.2 Sprint also offers simplicity and savings vs. competitors with Everything Data plans, which include unlimited Web, texting and calling while on the Sprint network for one low price.
"Sprint customers are the first in the country to use 4G with either a smartphone like HTC EVO or one of Sprint's other 4G devices like the 3G/4G Overdrive Hotspot to wirelessly connect a laptop to the Internet," said Matt Carter, president of 4G, Sprint. "Later this year, Sprint will launch Boston, Miami, New York and Los Angeles, enabling millions more to harness this powerful new service."
As summer travel continues, people will find that 4G is available in many markets across the country: California - Merced, Modesto, Stockton and Visalia; Delaware - Wilmington; Florida - Jacksonville; Georgia - Atlanta and Milledgeville; Hawaii - Honolulu and Maui; Idaho - Boise; Illinois - Chicago; Maryland - Baltimore; Michigan - Grand Rapids; Missouri - Kansas City and St. Louis; New York - Rochester and Syracuse; Nevada - Las Vegas; North Carolina - Charlotte, Greensboro (along with High Point and Winston-Salem), Raleigh (along with Cary, Chapel Hill and Durham); Oregon - Eugene, Portland and Salem; Pennsylvania - Harrisburg, Lancaster, Philadelphia, Reading and York; Texas - Abilene, Amarillo, Austin, Corpus Christi, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Killeen/Temple, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, San Antonio, Waco and Wichita Falls; Utah - Salt Lake City; Virginia - Richmond; Washington - Bellingham, Seattle, Tri-Cities and Yakima. ^^ bad link

Yay, Corona, CA. It's about damn time too. Although, if I drive barely 5 miles west I get 3g and also get 3G at my workplace which is in Los Angeles county. It's only at my house where I only get Edge connection.
edit: 3rd quarter, so that means I will be getting 3g in my city sometime between June and September, nice...looks like I will no longer have to turn on wifi when I get home.
Damn this 3g thing sucks (lack of).
If I go the nyc The speed is beautiful. In westchester too. I get to Stamford and get a weak signal by UBS and nothing anywhere else. In norwalk, I get a 3g sinal once in a blue. random times in the evening. And when I realize it the speeds are horrible. Damn T mo. I know you can dish out the signal...Hurry/
I waited so long, but 3Q for CT seems so far away.
When they add 3G coverage to a city how big of a radius is effected? I'm about 40 miles from Manchester, NH and 50 miles from Portland, ME (both second quarter upgrades according to the link). I know those distances are quite large but using the Boston 3G as a reference on Tmobile's coverage checker (which is currently down) it covers a pretty wide span.
Will I notice a difference?
There is a possibility youll see a difference, just depends on location i.e living in a Valley etc, im not overly familiar with the US topography as i only know the tourist destinations of Florida, California and Vegas Baby!!
Im from England,, where Bump mapping was something Cartographers used to do to their wives
all i can say is im with 3G and i live about 40 miles from Manchester (UK) and 15 Miles from Sheffield (UK) so where ever there is a big City, for me there is 3G
Its good to hear 3G is rolling out for you!

Cool, it's reasonably flat between me and Manchester NH so finger's crossed.
I'm from Blighty myself by the way.
None in Columbus Yet
So, it says Q2 for Columbus, OH and I'm yet to get any. I wonder just how reliable that list is.

Where are you from? I'm moving back to Manchester in a month, I'm excited about 3g . I live in Nashua now and there's no 3g till around Lowell and south and it's blotchy. As it is in Manchester Edge is blotchy and at my moms house I only get gprs, but near Elm street and east I get Edge. I was working in Beverly mass and I get some 3.5g out there. 2nd quarter is april - june correct? So I should be getting 3g real soon.
There were quite a few blind spots in the 3G network in the Minneapolis/St Paul (Minnesota) northern suburbs, but this past Tuesday, T-Mobile turned on their new 3G towers. It's great to have 3G at work now, and I can actually do some webbrowsing on my breaks.

What happened to Sprint's initial WiMax rollout?

I live in Indianapolis, and I do not want to pay for 4G when I don't have it here yet. I researched it online, and it looks like way back in 2007 Sprint "Motorola is prepping service for Chicago, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Indianapolis, Kansas City and Minneapolis; Samsung will develop Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia, Providence and Washington D.C.; and Nokia will work on Austin, Dallas, Denver, Fort Worth, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Antonio and Seattle." Does that mean that Indy or any of the other cities on this list will get rolled out soon?
EDIT: Forgot my source... http://mobile.engadget.com/2007/03/26/sprint-fills-in-a-few-more-wimax-deets/
I don't think you should really trust a three year old story on trying to figure out when your city will get wimax... phone companies are always late rolling this kind of stuff out and plans change constantly

4G Coverage - San Francisco Bay Area

I live and work in SF and I've yet to see my Evo kick into 4G.
What buildings, intersections, etc have you seen 4G coverage?
4G has not been launched in San Francisco. Go to Sprint.com/4G. We will be getting it before the end of the year.

There are spots of 4g, but the only area I know for a fact is in the south bay...
http://developer.clear.com/innovation
You can see an overview map there, and if you click the city names lower, you get a much higher quality map. I latched onto a 4G network while driving but... was driving so I couldn't test it.
South Bay, Santa Clara, some of SJC down town.
Just pockets of 4g. i guess they are building it these days.
4g in Fremont
I get 4g coverage here in Fremont. Weak (1 bar) signal, but consistent. 7.81 down/.65 up speeds according to speetest.net

4G coming to Hampton Roads Virginia!

My girlfriend had to exchange her EVO 4G yesterday at an official Sprint service center, and she was told that a lot of the problems we are having around here is because they've been working on the towers to upgrade them to 4G. The guy said they were doing it 'quietly, not announcing anything yet'.
Hope he's telling the truth! So far the closest 4G to here is Richmond, VA. It will be nice to see if this phone actually does 4G, or if that's just what they've been telling me.
I think your GF was feed a load of ____!
Clearwire hasn't been expanding due to money problems and a spat with Sprint. WiMax also runs at 2.5ghz and it's separate from Sprint's CDMA network. Clearwire wouldn't need to touch Sprint's hardware to launch WiMax in any area.
Now if it were Sprint upgrading their base station with their Network Vision plan, that could cause outages since all new hardware is being installed. Still that wouldn't be it because Sprint has publicly stated they will not start those changes till the 2nd half of this year.
If you're lucky, it could be Sprint making the change to Network Vision, in your area, for testing. I doubt that's it though.

False. Clear water is still expanding for the first half of the year. After that they are out of money.

You should have better confirmation before you make a post declaring the 4G is coming Hampton Roads area. I've been getting that same line since I bought my EVO in June. And now since Clearwire is broke and they CEO just resigned, it doesn't look good for WiMax rollouts.
I got all hyped when I read the thead title. Come back when you have something official.
WAVY 10, our local news channel did some investigating in reference to the crappy sms and web service we have been dealing with. What they found was that Sprint network in our area can't handle the amount of new smart phone customers they have signed up with the evo and the epic. They are fixing the system and expect it to be back online correctly by April 1st. We will see!
They have been saying that forever too. Whenever there is a problem, give it a few weeks....then two months go by, and nothing.
4G is already in Hampton Roads. Downtown Norfolk has testing going on. It's not the greatest but it's something. I used it about a week ago while I was on Colley Ave. Coverage was in and out as I drove through downtown but it is working.
I too have been told, by a Sprint Rep in Norfolk at the JANAF shoppong center, that the network outages are caused by the area being upgraded to 4G and for support for more 4G phones. He told me that areas of Norfolk have 4G up unofficially for testing, and an announcment will be made in April.
I decided to test the 4G at a StarBucks near Colley and Princess Anne and it connected. The connection was spotty and Speedtest.net would not connect. The trajic part is as soon as I drove away from the Starbucks I lost the 4G connection and it told me disconnected but radio antenna still on. Its not like Richmond but its a step in the right direction.
We ahve it here in Raleigh and I enjoy it in the spots where it is available. Yeee Haaa, post #10, now I can actually post something usefull.
No 4G in VB yet..at least at lynhaven area 3G data speeds are horrifying though.

Hampton
i havent gotten any 4g service they few times ive been to norfolk lately. Im in Hampton and i cant wait for 4g. But i honestly dont care if we get it. im sure i wouldnt use it alot cause of the battery anyways
look at clear's coverage map.....it shows a section of norfolk and gloucester as having 4g coverage
I live in Norfolk near the airport. i have never gotten any 4g connection. This weekend, I drove all through downtown and still did not get any 4g connection despite the claims in other posts. I will say that my 3g service has been really crappy lately. so i contacted sprint and they told me 4 towers were being worked on and should be fixed by april 1. The agent told me that she was annotating my call in my record and will be giving me a discount on my next month's bill because of failed service. She couldnt say how much but anything is better than nothing Yall should call as well. I'm just saying!

This is true. Whenever I get off work and I'm stuck in traffic going westbound through the downtown tunnel, my Evo connects to 4G with full bars. The speed test results I saw were nothing special though. I only pulled 2.5Mbps down, but that's still better than my 3G speeds of around 200kbps....

It is true! It is true! There is 4g downtown Norfolk. I followed Tidewater drive... to Little creek... made a left on Grandby. I followed Granby to 27th then Colley. The second I hit Colley I had 4 bars at 4g. I pulled over at the Golden Nugget Chinese Restaurant and ran a couple of speed tests. The results 7m down 2mb up Wow! That is awesome comparing to Norfolk's typical 3g service ranging from 200k-700k! I had service from the original find of 9:30 PM to 9:45PM then the signal died. I am not sprint so have no explanation why it went away. I confirmed that it was not a wireless connection..it was in fact 4g. Sprint, when is it coming to the rest of Hampton Roads?
Have you tried to tether with wimax? if so what speeds do you get? The reason I ask is because while downtown i connected to 4g, turned on tethering, then connected with my ipad 2. i was getting crappy crappy speeds like 200k while on the phone i was getting 7mb simultaneously

Or you can look at Clearwire's coverage map. As of today on the Peninsula it shows Clearwire / Sprint 4G coverage in parts of Williamsburg, Gloucester, and Newport News. In SHR it looks like there's some coverage around downtown Norfolk and in Virginia Beach (around Town Center and Oceana).

Celebration in the Florida Panhandle

Well guys, I don't know how many of you (if any of you) live in the Florida Panhandle, but if you do, you would know that for years our area has been very much behind the rest of the nation in terms of upgrading to newer and faster wireless cellular networking standards. Well, we Panhandlers can now rejoice!! Our years of painful waiting have not been in vain.
On the GSM side...
T-Mobile
After years of dealing with the painfully slow Edge network, T-Mobile users in Pensacola got both 3g AND 4g coverage in limited areas this past week. I was not in town when it got switched on apparently (was in Louisiana where they already have 4g), but was pleasently surprised to see the HSPA+ indicator come on when I got back. It hasn't been turned on everywhere in town yet though, or at least not according to my phone. North, Northeast, and Central P-Cola are the areas I've tested thus far, all of which are served by one tower in the North Central section. Downtown area and Southeast side (East Hill/Heights) still running on Edge. No official announcement from T-Mobile about it though (which is weird, hope they're not just doing a large-scale beta test). Apparently 4g has been switched on a 100 miles east in Panama City as well, per the T-Mobile website. Also per the T-Mobile coverage locator, 2 new cell towers have just been added to the local Pensacola network (one in the northeastern suburb of Pace, and one on the southwestern beach town of Perdido Key), though I haven't been able to test if these are in fact 4g/3g towers yet.
AT&T
AT&T is still in the baby stages of rolling out their 4g system, with little information about when and if they are going to upgrade their infrastructure here in the Panhandle. But they have had 3g here in Pensacola for a while now, and it is decently quick. Much better than Edge, at any rate. I REALLY hope the T-Mobile buyout doesn't go through...I can't stand AT&T. But if it does, then AT&T will absorb all of T-Mobile's infrastructure, and therefore inherit whatever 4g systems T-Mobile has in place here in the Panhandle. This may, in fact be the reason why there is no news/rumors/anything about AT&T releasing their own 4g in the Panhandle - because they aren't planning to. Hmm...
On the CDMA side of things...
Sprint
Many unconfirmed reports have gone around that Sprint is testing their 4g network in and around small parts of Pensacola as well. I confirmed this (at least for myself) by testing out a friend's Evo 4g near the Cordova Mall area where there had been 4g spottings. Not very fast or strong, but we did pick up 4g. However, no one knows for sure when they will finish testing it and fully switch it on. But it's encouraging to see they're definitely working on rolling it out.
Verizon
Verizon just officially launched their 4g LTE in Pensacola and 50 miles to the west in Mobile, AL. Unlike T-Mobile, Verizon has made this event quite a public affair, with even the local news reporting on it: LINK. As Verizon is proudly displays their true data coverage map that breaks down the types of data networks by the different "g's" (unlike some other type of company i know *cough*AT&T*cough*), it is easy to see that their 4g coverage envelops all of Pensacola proper, with most of the surrounding suburbs/small towns getting 4g as well. There are a few 3g gaps here and there, but the overwhelming majority of all the urbanized areas now gets 4g service. It is by far the most expansive 4g network in the Pensacola area, and also covers most of Lower Alabama as well (Mobile, Daphne, Gulf Shores, Foley, Dauphin Island, Theodore, etc.). Panama City and most of the other Panhandle areas are not currently covered by Verizon 4g (save Tallahassle). However, according to THIS article, all other Panhandle areas will be covered by sometime in 2013. Not bad Verizon, not bad at all.
So, all in all, we now have 3 different cellular providers that offer (at least limited) 4g in Pensacola and other parts of the FL panhandle. All 4 providers now have at least 3g coverage in most urbanized areas. And at least two providers have documented plans to keep expanding their current 4g system deeper into the Panhandle.
I feel this video is appropriate for our current situation:

About time
I hope they run in by the base. I was at the Carmike the other day and BAM!!! 3G
