Froyo don't have a edit selection text! - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Friends help me if possible,
In Desire Build V5 .... to select a portion of text, we have a selection method like iphone, that alowed to stretch and shrink, was better than iphone, because we can send it to google tradutor or even to twitter or email.
Now, in Froyo this method of selection dont work...we have one like WM....and is wast we just can copy!!
What i'm talking is what who can see here just after the 1 minute mark:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H30u4q3Omkc&feature=player_embedded
For exemple:
How did you select a portion of text to edit bold, italic or underline??
I give my centims to, who can, make the a phrase like mine up with Froyo Darkstone V1 in HD2
Is any option off? or is it a app, which?
if not, it's possible to port the method selection of Desire in Froyo??
or is anyone working on porting the magnifying glass from the latest desire rom?
we just have this in FROYO:
Select text
Figure 19: Select Text
This is an area where the iPhone was far better than the Eclair and unfortunately still is with Froyo. The gap though has decreased significantly.
With Froyo I can now select text from say an email and paste it somewhere else – even a different application. The Select Text option is hidden under the More menu button and once selected, it creates a small mouse pointer. That is the start of where it will start selecting (Figure 20).
I simply point to the top left area I want to copy from and drag my finger diagonally to end up at the bottom right of the area I want to select. This will select the text in a very appealing pink color and as soon as I lift my finger from the screen it will copy the text on the keyboard (Figure 21).
The technique on the iPhone is better but not by much – as I wrote the gap has decreased significantly. On the iPhone you have a magnifying glass where you can pinpoint exactly where you want to start copying (or inserting text – same functionality).
Figure 20: Mouse pointer
Again unfortunately this functionality (the one with the magnifying glass for selecting text) is patented by Apple Inc. and will not be seen on an Android based phone but I am sure that the Android developers will come up with something that will give us the same if not better user experience.

I do not understand how people do not worry about not being able to edit the format of your texts.

hi everyone does anyone know where i can get the large menu in this picture (right picture) or even just its name...i do no its from the touch hd though
btw this picture is from cmex's rom
that one up here should be part of the touch HD SIP (software keyboard)
however, u can get something similiar for other programs. its called "finger menu".
This is it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=459125
I'd be careful with it on the X1 though!
It is still under development
I tested it on X1 and there's a problem with the background transparency because it uses alphablend
alpha sometimes worx and sometimes it doesnt. in general ... high potential, but loads of minor anoying bugs.
Works perfect for me. be sure to install it on device memory, and soft reset.
perfect? i doubt it!
try to copy/paste Numbers in your Contacts.
try to select folders in files exlorer (upper left menu without installing plugins to fix it)
some programs simply dont work
perssing the OK button while finger menu is open screwes the Program and closes Finger menu ...
thats far from perfect but pretty good start
my advice, go to advanced config, open interface and increase the "popup menu fontsize" to 1000 or ore more.not nearly as nice but works like a charm so far.

If you use portrait more than landscape then try 1200 and the use the light font that gets installed with Yota contacts (don't think it's available seperately, but I'll extract it later on if you want)
That looks really nice, is even more finger friendly and the font looks very crisp..
thanks for the info, i dont think will try finger menu yet, maybe at a latter stage in its development!
changing the pop-up menu font size works perfectly, exactly what i wanted.
fards if you could extract the better font for me when you have spare time that would be brilliant,
Thanks everyone

Thanks! And if you have any feedback (requests, etc) just let me know!
Just tried this on my Fuze. Works great, but could use more features. Like more voice bubbles to choose from, more resizing options, and maybe some different fonts to choose from. Nice work.

Thanks for the feedback!
When you say "more resizing options"... what do you have in mind? Currently the resizing is simply dragging the corner of a caption/bubble to resize. Are you thinking of a "size to fit text" sort of thing?
Tried this on my Omnia i910 with WM 6.1. Didn't work. The trial version loaded, but when I selected a picture to load it crashed every time.

I hadn't tested this on a device with a screen resolution the size of the Omnia's (240 x 400). I'll see about getting a rom image setup with that resolution and test on that.
Thanks for the report!
This looks really cool. Can't wait to try it.
have not tried it, but does it support speech bubbles with curves instead of rectangular? eg oval, rounder corners etc
I've updated this to version 1.1 (see the first post, primarily to add the "Guidance dots" to make it easier to know how to resize the bubbles and captions.
Also includes a few various bug fixes.
If you have any requests just let me know! (Additional bubble types and a few effects are in the works...)
I will try this, but currently, it is very plain.
Add more bubbles (thought bubbles, transparency, etc.) and fonts for the words. The more the better!

SMS Text selection

Hello,
Our Leo's have the new text selection method in sms (where you drag a arrow to where you want to select text). The problem is that this selection is not recognized by input methods like SlideIT or Swype.
So I cannot edit/add words trough selection like I should be able to. If I use a simple text editor that uses the old selection method (like Pocket Notepad), I'm able to edit/add words in SlideIt.
So, is there anyway I can use the old selection method in SMS?
The ideal would be using the new selection method but making it work with SlideIT...
Bump bump bump
Lemme make sure I'm understand this - you want to highlight a selection of text in sms and bulk add them as good words in SlideIT/Swype - so that wheh you slide out a word the ones you added are now valid words?

Yes, also remove and edit a word...
But Swype/SlideIT can't see that the text is selected for some reason...
In the new version of Slide it you CAN highlight words in sms text box.

That looks like the HTC Message word selection and not slideit selection, but I could be wrong. But that does not allow you to add or remove the word from SlideIT dictionary.
But despite that, how can you select a word without using the long press + cursor sliding thing in HTC Message?
sorry for slow reply, lost the thread.
1.Maybe you are right, can you reccomend a program to try it in?
2. To do the above, i press screen (on the word) and the box pops up with the options,

Is there a way to make a shortcut or some button that will take me straight to the sms screen that i get when i press the "all messages" button, and the "inbox" one for email. The preview thing that you can flip through is neat and all, but not the best way to shoot off a quick sms. Running touch x-treme rom btw

Yes, in your start menu, there's icons for "messages" (not "messaging", that's different), and "e-mail"...you should be able to create shortlinks for those just like any other link that's in your start menu. I just tested it on mine and it worked fine. If you have multiple e-mail inboxes setup, clicking that link will first ask you which inbox you want it to take you to...but otherwise those both will bypass the pretty-but-useless Sense interface for those
Thanks for that, I got the email one, but for the life of me cant find the messages icon you mention, there is no mention of it in the start menu. I was gonna flash roms again tonight so i wont worry too much about it untill i find the one i like.
i was looking for this too, thanks!

Hmm, I'm guessing the ROM you are/were on just had a different msg client on it that didn't put that link in the start menu. I notice on my TP2 the icon with the same function is called "texts", so look for that maybe...?
If you look in the /windows folder on your phone, you'll probably find either "messages.lnk" or "texts.lnk" in there, copying whichever one you find to /windows/start menu will make it possible for you to then create a quicklink to it.

You do realize that when you are at the messaging screen that shows the fancy animation you can hit the button in the upper right to make a new message, without having to drill down into all messages and find the person
I like it when it shows me the different threads i have with different people, like it did on my g1, and i only have a few people at a time that im messaging so its not very hard to find the name i want.

How to turn off long-press magnification?

Usually, long-press is for selecting text, but on this Xperia it's popping up with a magnifying glass instead. Is there any way to turn this off?

I haven't found that to be the case. Usually long-press on Internet page selects text. You might be experiencing a function built in to a specific app...
Xichael talks about this. When you select text in your input there is a zoom.

Yes, mine is like that, but round. An easy place to try it is in Chrome's address bar.
EDIT: Actually, I get the rectangular one too. They seem to take over in any text input field.

It's not linked to an app. If you write a text somewhere and try to select it, the zoom will appear
Magnifier is useful for selecting special place for cursor on small screen. It's a feature on fields that can be edited/written in.
If you want to select a word, use double-tap.
I use Gboard's space bar swiping feature to reposition the cursor. Really hope there's a way to disable this. It makes selecting text inconsistent, and I truly have no need for it.
Settings > Accessibility > Magnification
Disable
I don't have that option. There's something called "magnification gesture", but it's already turned off.

Which version of Android are you using on your X Compact? Nougat has the magnification bubble when editing text but this seems to have been removed in Oreo.

Which phone is that? I only know of iPhones, Xperia's, Asus Zenfone and some early HTC phones having the magnification bubble to edit text. Shame more phones don't have it, it's very useful.
