Headset jack in Mono...not stereo?? - Vibrant General

Hey guys! Thanks for all the help you (the community & XDA Dev. Team) provide to n00bs like me! I have a weird issue with my brand spanking new Vibrant. Bought it yesterday.
For some reason, when I plug in the headset that came with the phone, I only get a mono sound coming out from the jack, not stereo. I also tried 3 other headsets both with 3 prong (phone-style headset) and 2 prong and messed with plugged (plugging it in slightly then pushing it in and twisting it) but still get a mono sound from it.
Does anyone know how to fix this? Anything in the settings I need to change or maybe a defect of the phone? I am brand new to Android and loving it so far!
Thanks for any help.

Not trying to be demeaning but did you push the connecter all the way in? I messed up the first time I used headphones and didn't push it all the way, resulting in a much lower volume.

I also did this. It clicks in twice onthe vibrant. Easy to miss

Looks like that worked.
Thanks for both of your help. I didn't have a pair of headphones at work with me, so I borrowed someone's here and it worked in stereo. I wonder if the headset that came with it are faulty. Anyone else have an issue with them??

i dont have any problems either...also i agree with the others, the final click is a really hard one, i almost thought i was going to break the phone getting the last click...just make sure you cant see any more of the headphone plug metal, and you know you got it in all the way

Guilty. I'm another one that didn't push the plug in all the way the first time.

You're not crazy. My firs Vibrant had a faulty headphone jack that would short out to Mono if the cable was touched at all. The second one works find, but like others said: you almost feel like you're going to break the headphone jack with the amount of force it requires.
Try exchanging the phone.

lol wow I'm glad I read this thread. I haven't used the headphones much after the first day if not pouting it in all the way. I would get stereo but it would cut out every once in a while

I thought I was crazy....
It's all good. I came home and actually tried the headset that came with the Vibrant and pushed down a little bit harder and it worked. Thanks for the "obvious" suggestions guys. I guess I was a little bit nervous pushing it too hard might break the headset jack. Glad it works just fine!

speakers not working anymore

suddenly, the speakers of my wizard (Qteck 9100) doesn't work anymore.
When playing mp3's or making a phone call, I just can't here anything anymore! When using my headset, everything works fine.
Since there are 3 speakers, (2 stereo for music and 1 for phone speaker) which doesn't work anymore, I suppose this is a software error and not my hardware.
Is there anyone with some ideas for registry changes or so to make it work again? Else I will return it and let them fix it (still in garantee)
thanks!

the main speaker on my 9100 just quit one day while it was sitting on my desk and hasn't worked since. Hard reset didn't help. New rom install didn't help. Gonna take it apart and look around soon.

I've had this happen to me. What I surmised was that the phone probably thought the headset was still plugged in. I had to do a headset exchange with T-mobile USA.
There's a known fault in the wizard headphone jack socket switch which stays open when the head phone jack is removed. Plugging the jack in and giving it a good "waggle" sorts it apparently.
PS "waggle" is an old Swedish word for moving something back and forth while having your left trouser leg rolled up to your knee.
eek
this actually happened to me when my headphone jack's tip broke off and stayed in the connector. if you pop off the battery, you can see the tip. just make sure nothing's there, to verify that your problem isn't physical.

I tried the "waggle" but it didn't work. I ended up replacing the headset since it was still under warranty with T-Mobile USA. However I use the headset plug quite a lot since I use the phone as an MP3 player during my work commute, so this is a cause for concern.
I had never used the headset and never put anything in that jack. Still the speake stopped working.
found out what was wrong with mine. Turns out that the ribbon cable that connects the lcd part to the keyboard part got snagged on something and had a couple of mm gash torn in the side. I noticed that sliding the keyboard open made kind of a crumply noise. I thought it was some flaw in the slide design, but it was just the broken cable rubbing against something. Still not sure where to get it fixed though (other than germany)
I had the same problem with this f*** headsets... I tried since two hours to "waggle" it and it didn't change anything... I'm going to try with other headsets tomorrow if it's the only solution
This happened to me again with my replacement MDA. This is what I ended up doing - take off the back plate and remove the battery. If you look at where the battery used to be towards the bottom of the phone, you'll sorta see the headphone connector. Use your stylus and wiggle it around thru the slight hole. That might do the trick.
Thanks,
I could solve my problem too this way, just kept moving in and out the headphone jack till it worked.

One question, How many times you did it to make the sound work again ?
well, i think it took me some time, just wanted to give it up and suddenly it worked (play some music while trying, so you here it when it will work)
I also pushed and turned a little bit with the headphone jack into the headphone input connector, but be carefull with that, the headphone jack could break and parts of it could stay into the headphone input connector, and I assume that would make your problem bigger than before...
anyway, if it really doesn't work, you should return it asap, I should be replaced ...
good luck
This fixed my speakers
Incase someone wonders over to this thread:
I very gently wiggled the headphone jack whilst playing an mp3, and it worked.
I am so relieved that I dont have to take it in to be repaired.
If you cant get it to work straight away, try blowing into the socket, or use a toothpick. But remember to be gentle.

Nexus One's Headphones - Broken

They were working great with the phone, I unfortunately had to get my phone replaced due to dust and still don't have it back, but I tried them with my computer and the sound is distorted. Tried another pair of cheap headphones and it sounds good.
How did they become useless after a little over a week...
I'll see how it sounds when I finally get a new phone back, my guess is that it will sound just as bad.
Anyone else have their headphones break?
Nope haven't had them break, but then again I've barely touched them since they're so infinetly terrible.
i think there is a short or something in them... mine shocked the **** out of my ear from the right bud till i finally bought me some other buds... they sounded horrid anyway
I have to assume your computer uses a 3.5mm jack with only 2 (3?) contacts... the n1 headphones are designed for use with 4... for the different pause/skip things I assume. I have to have them like half in to get them to work right on my pc... I suggest using normal headphones for the pc.
It is possible your headphones are in fact broken though.
What Wobblebonk said. Don't wory about the earphones, they're fine (unless you fried them with your computer, but that's highly unlikely).
They weren't designed for a 3.5 mm stereo socket (which only has three sockets) and as a result the computer probably just feeds one of the signal to the wrong contact on the earphones. That's why a "half-in" trick which Wobblebonk suggested, works (the contacts happen to align in just the right way).
Okay cool, hopefully I'll have my phone back soon then to use them again.
Too big for my ears, but thats okay, I have a far better set of ear buds anyway. And for when i'm feeling extra nerdy, I got my AKG studio's

[help]Phone outputs sound only in right ear phone

As title says, it used to work properly with both left and right headphones working properly, however now only the right earpiece outputs sound no matter what I try, played music, games, video and all have the same problems.
Could have been something I did with the phone, could have accidentally made it output in the right earphone only. if so, how do I fix it...
Tried other pairs of earphones and all experience the same problems too, the contact should be working as when i insert a earphone, i can hear the electrical contacts being made on the earphone
You can isolate instantly whether it's software or hardware by just reinstalling the firmware.. Then you'll know for sure (when I worked at a Apple reseller, restoring iPod's was the first action I told everyone to take if they didn't know what was wrong)
But I have yet to have seen any balance controls.
Are you using the Samsung earphones that were supplied with the phone? Samsung, and Nokia, use a different configuration to most phones as far as the four-pin socket is concerned, so if you are using any other make, the chances are that only one channel is connected. Also make sure you are using earphones with a FOUR pin plug, not the standard three pin supplied with mp3 players.

Standard stereo mini-jack is a universal wiring standard, i.e. tip and two barrel contacts for ground and left/right channels. The fourth barrel contact is usually used for composite video.
If anyone decided to wire their socket differently then you'd never get any earplugs/headphones to work without an adaptor and it would be a totally stupid thing to do.
To the original poster, check whether you've adjusted balance settings to only one side. Not sure how you do that since haven't got mine yet.
Using stock headphones, have not changed any settings to output in right earphones only.will try re flashing when I can
This may sound a bit dumb but you checked you actually properly pressed the jack into the socket? Just asking because the first time I listened to something on my SGS I had the same problem just to notice that the socket was actually tight enough so that the jack wasn't completely in, once I pressed it the missing 1-2mm in the whole thing changed

though that this could have been the problem as well, pushed it all the way in but stop no luck.
Reflashed firmware, still have the problem.... This is already the second problem with my phone, if you have been frequenting this forums you would know that i have also posted a problem with my camera.
So gotta bring down to Samsung svc centre again?
Is there any way i can ask for a 1 to 1 exchange since i have gotten a lemon device...

Yes I'd assume if you describe to them that some key functions don't work properly they should give you a new one, for instance the audio output isn't only for listening to music but also works as the handsfree socket so it is rather vital. You just got a bad copy so go and ask them

Just went down to Samsung svc centre today and described my problems, asked for a replacement and all they replied was "sorry sir, we do not do 1 to 1 exchanges"... Damn was really hoping to get a new phone, anyway now its with them and hope they don't screw anything up with it.
Sound Problem
You solved the problem? I have the same problem sounds to me more slowly in the left side of the headphone. I using Dark Knight 3.
I had such a problem with my old k800i mobile. After buying new earphones, the problem was solved.
Sound Problem
I tried, but no results
the sgs ( GT-I9000 ) uses a different type of wiring for the headphones, is the same nokia uses for the N95, the sgs2 headset wont work! the galaxy tabs headsets wont work, the iphone/ipod headsets wont work!!!!! why??? because the wiring is different!! why?? ask samsung!
ok, are you using the same headset? if yes, try to use them in someone else sgs (gt-i9000) if they work then it's your phone, if they don't ask if you can use his headset in yours, if they work then is your headset, just get a new one keeping in mind what i just told you.
if you narrowed it down to your phone being faulty.. (it happened to me too... ) and I just saw that you are waiting for it to be fixed, just wait until you get it back... ( i hope they will fix it for you too)... in my case they changed the logical board, so it's basically a new phone on the inside.
good luck.

Headset issue

Another of my little niggles, and hopefully you guys can help me out again.
Today I had cause to use headphones with my SGS and found something kinda weird. I plugged in my old head set, a skull candy fmj, and found that much of the music was just 'missing'.
Music plays fine, but vocals are totally inaudible. Not distorted or broken, I mean literally not there, but the track plays underneath. If I listen to speech, then practically nothing comes through. Very very faint.
When I use other headphones or the stock head set or speakers, everything plays back fine, its just that one set. It works fine on my blackberry just not on my sgs.
Any thoughts whats wrong here? Id hate to have to get a new set, not because they were expensive or anything, just because it seems there's nothing really wrong with them!
Thanks guys

I had the same problem. I was being too timid pushing the cable in all the way because I didn't want to break it. You're probably pushing it in all the way, but something still may be wrong with the connection. When I didn't push the plug in all the way I got the instruments but vocals were almost completely drowned out, but they were there.

Headsets with a built-in mic that use the industry-standard pin order on the 3.5mm jackplug don't work with the SGS, as they have reversed the 3rd and 4th bands on the jack.
The easiest way around it is to use a Nokia headset adaptor (as supplied with eg the N95) and then plug your headset into that. I'm not sure if the mic will work in calls or not, but you'll at least be able to use your headphones to listen to music. The sound quality is good, too!
If you use regular headphones with it, you won't have this problem.
There are other postings about this on here.. search and you'll get a much better explanation than my gin-addled brain is capable of giving at this point in time.
Well that's nice of Samsung.
TY for the info, I guess I'll shop for some new headphones then.

Headset Jack broken?

Well.. I've got a problem:
Today I wanted to use my Samsung headset that came with the S2, plugged it in, and the music sounded wierd. Like there was an echo, or if all my music was a karaoke version..
Turns out:
Non-Headset headphones work perfectly, but the "3-ringed-jack" headset does not work! I do not have another headset to test this, but the headset works @my pc (got a connector for that..)
So the 3.5mm jack at my S2 seems to be broken?
I will try a software reset (right now I am @stock rom+root) and then send it to Amazon. Anyone heard of that problem or got some ideas?
Breece
[edit]
Reset didnt help, but the headset does *not* work on my Nexus one (same problem) but my BH905i do not work on both phones with the 3.5mm jack (the one that has "3 rings")
Did you push the pin in far enough?
For 3 weeks I didn't know I had to push it hard into the jack, until it clicks. After that, it was perfect. I'm using Ultimate ears 220vi, 3 ring.
That has to be the pin. you must give it a good press to seat it properly.
The SGS2 headset jack is a bit 'finicky'. Some aux cables / headsets work, some sound funny or do not work and yes, one has to ensure it is really pushed in firmly.
I pushed as if my life depended on it Just last week the headset worked...

The same thing happened to me, but I noticed ealier.
I re-installed the firmware but nothing seems to help. I guess its hardware..
Will send it back to Amazon today...
Maybe the headset is broken after all, who knows
Just an update:
Has been @ the amazon repair center for two days and apparently something did indeed brake in the hardware... atleast it says on the homepage "being repaired"
Now I hope the S2 will be back soon.. want to flash 2.3.4
Shoot I was just about to ORDER a replacement Audio Jack, until I read the second poster reply. For me, my headset worked only by wiggling the cable around into the audio jack in order to finally hear sound (had do this every single time and was very annoying), the audio did sound distorted and the mic would never work :-(
I personally thought that I inserted the cable in the audio jack as hard I could (after many attempts having this phone for 2 months)
but after reading kaotickelly's reply, I noticed i never EVER heard a click before inserting the cable in the jack throughout many attempts.
So I put my "trying to over protect my phone" ignorance aside, and FORCED the dam thing in, and it clicked!!! not only did I forced it, but I didn't scratch or break phone as i feared, Headset sounded correctly without any distortion and microphone worked!
Unlike Breece, my audio jack now works and I got to UPDATE to 2.3.4! (Don't take it personal)
GOOD-LOOKING OUT KAOTICKELLY!
