[solution]robotic voice on incoming audio in calls - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

we all know the robotic voice on incoming calls is mostly ROM related rather than RADIO related..
while cooking my roms i have discovered that its the base OEM which matters (OEMdrivers most likely, although not sure)
so here is my small list of base rom OEMs which i have tested and work
=>leo 1.66
=>tmous 2.10
and a list of those that do not work which i have tested
=>leo S 3.04 (havent tested 3.02 but i think its similar so might not work)
=>tmous 2.13
note that this is my test, although it would be weird if it only works for me
so tell ur fav chefs to make a special "android compatibility" rom (if it does not fall into the above category and doesnt work)
incase any other base rom works do post about it so that i can update the list
p/s mods i did search and there was no clear information on what exactly was causing the issue currently, so i thought i would post this for those who would not like to flash to the recommended working roms (no offence to those chefs, but all of us have different taste)

sry if i didnt get you wrong.. i was not referring to microphone problems, but rather listening to the person at the other end of the line(sound coming from other caller)

thanks for sharing your experiment.
I also did some testing and i just want to confirm that i got robot voice on base 2.13 and 2.14, but i took your advice and cooked a base 2.10 rom, now the voice is very clear.
thanks

cant find the exact post, but there was one which shows the things to replace in OEM to solve robot voice in any rom..
You need to use CAD.dll, dsm.dll, oncrpc.dll, remote_apis_clnt.dll, wavedev.dll, audio_cal.acdb..
(you can copy these out from the 2.10 OEM)
so u have the freedom of choosing any base

Is there a "SIMPLE" way to access the information on how to get rid of the robot voices? I just downloaded the androind system to my htchd2 with the guide of a youtube video and I am now lost. Please help if you can!

Crackling distortion on calls

I recently got my HD2 from O2 UK.
Not content with the factory ROM, I began to enter the world of tasting different cooked ROMS. Soon also began trying different version of radio roms too.
I soon noticed my calls, my end only, began to get wierd crackling background noise. I first thought this was down to bad reception or caused by the other end. Making test calls, it appears to happen on my HD2 only during quiet parts of the call or when a sudden change in volume occurs e.g. start of a word. If I mute the far end, i.e. complete silence, then no crackling background is heard. Is like the noise is attributable to the auto gain control circuitry.
Doing a forum search I found others had the similar problem with crackling distortion but seem to attribute this to certain radio roms.
I've tried different radio roms to eliminate the problem without success. However I did notice some cooked roms didn't have this problem. After trying alot of different roms it seems like only cooked roms which support 576MB ram had the crackling distortion. For example, Miri wm65x_23529 which supports 576MB has this problem but not Artemis WWE 207_23529 which doesn't support 576MB. All WM6.5 roms (as opposed to WM6.5.x) don't have the noise problem either.
I would like to use a WM6.5.x cooked rom with 576MB ram but so far haven't found one yet.
Has anyone else found this too or know what's causing this?
Does anyone have any more info regarding this issue. I seem to be having the same problem. I'm using XannyTechROM Pandora 1.5 ROM with 2.08.50.08_2 RADIO. As first stated by the OP, I too have tried most of the other cooked roms which support 576MB ram, and so far I've had the same crackling distortion issue as described above.
What is interesting is that the OP is on O2 network and I'm on Orange; however, my friend who also has a HD2 is running exactly the same combination of radio and rom as myself, yet he's not experiencing any of the said issues what so ever! What could be causing this?
Any advice, ideas or input would be greatly appreciated!
Duart
I also have this crackling problem, but with original ROM. Haven't found any good solution jet.

I wondering if people not having problem with 576MB roms have non UK sourced HD2.

Got a UK O2 HD2, currently on a 576MB cooked rom (see sig) and radio 2.07.50.27_2.
No issues at all with any aspect of calls. (or any other radio function), no crackle, no echo, good volume.
the crackling noise is one of the biggest problems on hd2. there exist a lot of threads about this. i also have this problem and it is really annoying!
at first everyone said it is a software failure but after testing different roms, radio rom versions and software i come to the conclusion that it is to 99% a hardware problem. even if the problem exists with headphone means that the hardware radio module has a malfunction! that's my theory...
anyway, i hope that it is just a software error which can be fixed. a lot of people already contacted htc with this problem but all they can say is:
"please make a hard reset..." or "we never heard of this problem"... that's a lie! i think they will gain some more time until warranty times expire
p.s: i have rtt shock rom rc3 and radio rom 2.07 installed, provider is o2 germany

Jepp i 100% second that !!! Seems to be problem with the radio module. Tried douzens of radio-rom combinations and the crackling is still there. Even hurts my ears when calling my girlfriend (female voices seem to make it even a bit worse). By the way: This is my third Device with this problem...
I don't think I can hear much crackling but do get a wavy distortion. It sounds like waves then a sudden stutter with no sound then the wave comes back.
I wonder if I need to install Rilphone.dll?
I heard somewhere when you flash a new radio you need to flash/re-flash the ROM after the radio flash for it to recognise the radio properly?
I will try out both when I get the time.
I had this issue with my unit in both phone earpiece and headphones.
It was a duff unit anyway (severe crashes and not booting up) and so i have another one coming tomorrow.
Will report back if the new one has it

The noise is so annoying to use as a phone now, it makes my old iPhone sounding like HiFi quality speaker.
Mine is only a few weeks old, maybe an idea to see if O2 would replace it as it seems a hardware related problem. Only problem is I don't have the distortion problem with the O2 rom to convince them with.
A couple of the radios had some really bad issues with sound quality. FWIW, I'm running 2.08.50.05_2 and I have no issues at the moment, but it seems to be different for you guys across the pond.
If you flash that and you still get bad sound quality, try flashing one of the 2.X.51.X radios. You won't have the extra RAM enabled - but what matters more, using your phone as a phone or some piddly ram?
And if that fails, I'd revert to one of the radios before these TMobile ROMs came out... they ARE geared for US networks and rev 3 of this brilliant phone...

did you had the crackling issue at high frequency (female voices) before 2.08?!

doesn't help in our case... i had this issue with all radio roms. from the stock one of 1.48 (doesn't know the version), to 2.06, 2.07 and 2.08!
i thought of giving it back, but on the other hand i don't want to wait for weeks just to get a phone with the same problem and maybe more of them like bad screen alignment or a more ugly touchscreen behaviour.

One of the radios... 2.06? perhaps? I had some really bad sound quality. Went away after I flashed off to another one.
these improvements of sound quality depending on radio rom version have nothing to do with the problem i (and a lot of other people) have.
you have to talk to a woman with my phone. after that you should know the difference betwenn my problem and yours
maybe htc will release someday a small fix to filter the high frequencies but i'm not sure if this will be possible anyway.
i got my 2nd hd2 today and can confirm that this unit does not have the crackling. hardware issue imo

MY solution for crackling speaker... BUT...!

hi there. i made an interesting experience today:
i tested several roms to satisfy my needs while i always used radio rom 2.07. this was the best for me in battery life and sound quality... but like on all other radio roms i had the annoying cracks while i speak to my girlfriend (or every other woman).
some days ago i found the right rom for me: rtt shock rom rc7i german. i still tried to use radio rom 2.07 but there was a problem with it:
i can't hear the people talking on other side and my hd2 freezes when ending a call after that i gave one of the newest radio roms a try. it's 2.08... with a _02 at the end, and korean or chinese setup! my problems were gone.
but i gained another problem: the quality of calls was decreased - i have much more noise when talking to someone than with other roms. but what can i say:
i phoned several times with my girlfriend and all the cracklings are gone!!! i'm very happy and confident that there will be a radio rom and rom combination that will have no crackling and no noise.
maybe you just want to try out my combination (as there also exists a wwe version of rtt rom!) - but surely i can't promise that it also works for you! on the other hand you maybe share my confidence for next roms developed for our hd2!
thx for your attention!
p.s: excuse my english - as you can read above i'm from germany
radio 2.08 is optimised for T-Mobile USA and therefore some performance degredation can be expected in Europe. The poor call qaulity has made me go back to the 1.66 radio.
well i thought there will be more interest on this topic since there have a lot of people the crackling speaker issue!
but i'm not sure if i stick with the 2.08 radio, not because of the poor quality. it's the faster battery drain and the changes from hsdpa to GPRS even if i stay at the same place.
hopefully there will be a better radio soon!
even if nobody cares, i have to inform you that i found a good compromise
just installed radio rom 2.07.50.27_2. with it the battery drain is much better and call quality even has improved!
heard of a new radio rom 2.08.xx coming next week! it always can be better so i can't wait for it!
Have tried 2.07 and 2.08 radios and problem still there. I am just trying to live with it until a solution is found

Yeah but the fact is: I also tried this radio several times and the crackling didnt disappear. But it DID in combination with the RTT ROM. Dont have any clue why but there are some users in a german forum reporting the same... Maybe you want to give it a try... Do a FullBackup, flash RTTs ROM and the Radio... If it doesnt help go back and use your Full Backup. I dont know how annoyed you are of the crackling but this might solve it even for you
@Fruchtfliege: Taking it over from pocketpc.ch to the Devs huh? Good idea Always nice to meet the same people in different forums

i don't know if it works for everyone in combination with a different rom, but maybe i would give it a try. the main reason why i have posted here (and on other forums) is the fact, that it is possible to fix the crackling since i thought long time that it is a hardware issue (posted on different forums too )

nice to hear that it is fixed for you too! i thought it only worked for me until now.
I've tried two separate ROM now with the 2.08 radio and the problem is still there. Guess we'll just have to wait for a radio optimised for the UK/Europe...

[Q] Does it really matter which WM Rom is used

Does is really matter which WM rom is used when using Android on hd2?
If I understand correctly WM is "shutdown" when Android is booted, I think only the radio version is important. Or am I missing something?
I know some of the earlier roms suffered from a robotic voice syndrome.
If that can cause a problem thens its possible that other minor issues may a rise but hard to pin point.
The rom you got is important since android still relys on wm for audio... You need a rom that is android friendly or just has the right audio drivers to avoid sound issues in android... As for radio version a .50 is recommend the new 2.14 seems to work just fine with performance increase but battery life is the trade off.

can you elaborate a little more on this i think maybe this could solve my issue with my install and recommend the best WM rom is android friendly thanks sorry to jack
The majority of wm roms work perfectly fine with android. Several are stripped down to boot quickly and have android boot managers built it. They are designed to cut the time necessary to get to android and so you can power on and boot to android without any user input.

ok so with this effect how phone calls and such take place my problem is i cant call out and when i receive some calls i might get to answer or error out if it works then robot sound any ideas or help on it
Robo Voice is caused by the WM rom, it isn't radio related. If you're getting it, try either one of the roms in the android section (if you want a stripped down winmo), or, if you are a winmo user as well as android, I'd recommend Miri's roms, or elegancia roms (only two I've tested, i'm sure there are more).
Radio is more for reception and sound quality. (Some report difference in sound quality, for example, between radio 2.10 and 2.12.50, personally i've not seen a difference in either. I have noticed a dramatic improvement using radio 2.14, at least for signal quality (I don't see any difference in sound quality, though, but that could be just me.)
I've been using the setup in my signature for months now with no issues apart from the ones stated in builds.
Hope this input helps
I am using the following configuration for running android on my HD2 :
Rom: stock
Radio : 2.8
Every build i have ever used worked perfectly. No robot voice, or any other issues.

elegancia rom and omega WM rom gives you robo voice if you are using hyperdroid 1.6 nexus one froyo rom but it works with the chunky rom.
i have been mixing and matching the roms alot lately but because the chefs seems to be updating their roms so fast i have not been keeping up.
I have designed a "kitchen" build available for download It is completly android friendly and I have not had any problems other people have had.
You are more than welcome to download the kitchen and build your own rom to your on specs. It comes with both 6.5 and 6.5.5 You simply choose which you want to build, press start and then flas the rom!
Here is the link: to the thread where I store the kitchen build!

[Solution] Robot voice issues - NAND Builds

I believe I have found a fix for robot voice issues. I was playing arround with several builds and could not get it fixed. It did not seem to matter what type of build, sense / non sense / kernel was used, but randomly I would get robot voice.
I know this has happened to a lot of people but I think I have found the root cause and a temporary fix.
The problem seems to be stemming from the dial pad sounds. I noticed that before I heard the tone from the keypad there would be a weird click sound. Then the robot voice would appear. If you then tried to dial again it seemd to crash the phone.
To fix the issue simply go into Settings -> Sound and disable Audible touch tones. I disabled Haptic feedback as well but do not think this has anything to do with the sound. (May differ slightly on how to disable on certain builds)
After I have done this I have done multiple reboots and have not had any futher issues with sound.
Sorry if this has been posted before but I just wanted to let you guys know what I have found out
Cool!
so simple...
It worked for me. I falshed sevral radio version and was about to flush the whole android adventure down the toilet.

Upgrade just the radio, and nothing else, did the trick for me.

[Q] Radio ROM or microphone problem??

Hello,
My friends complain about my call quality. They tell me that my voice repetitively gets extremely silent, so inaudible they often ask back so I need to repeat myself multiple times which is weird and aggravating at some point.
I have an EU HD2 with radio 2.15.50.14 and Rafdroid HD 4.0.2 NAND + data2sd. I had this problem back while I was still using wm65 Energy ROMs or my own custom built wm65 ROM, so I'm 99% sure it's unrelated to the operating system.
BTW I'm on T-Mobile Hungary. Gonna try my phone with Vodafone too, just to narrow things down.
Oh, and no, I'm NOT covering the microphone with my hand. I always hold my phone in my right hand when calling.
Anyone else had a problem like this?
Thanks,
Jay
Bumpity bump?
If you had the issue with the Energy ROM and your current ROM plus you have the most current radio version installed it my just be a issue of bad service in your area. You could try down grading your radio starting with the radio under the one you have and systematicly work your way down from there with the radio versions to see if you can find one that works better in your area. Go to the HTC HD2 Master Radio Thread to get the radios.

Thanks for the tip! Will try that.
I have exactly the same issue on my HD2.
Radio 2.07.50.27_2
Energy ROM: Energy.Leo.29007.Sense2.5.Cookie.2.0.Dec.27
I think for me this is a hardware problem, but it occurs very randomly and usually sound is ok again after some seconds.
JayMore, did you find a solution?
I have had this problem for quite a while also on older Energy ROM (same radio), but I never called very much. Now it is getting worse or I make too much long calls and I'm ready to RMA.
Try using a different microSD card, since I've switched, nobody mentioned this problem. Sounds stupid enough to actually do the trick...
Help!!!
My HTC HD2 is giving me problems....everytime I receive a call the caller gets a echo of his/her voice.....is there anything I can do to fix that????
Same problem here.
Usually when people phone me. If I phone back it seems OK.
Gonna try and rollback to an earlier radio to see if that works.
