Transfer of videos to the X - Droid X General

Okay so I have the phone defaulted to go to PC mode everytime I plug it into the computer and I have Windows 7. When I transfer movies over to the Droid X, Windows 7 asks me if I want to convert the files or just transfer. I have been converting, but I have already encoded the files using handbrake and was wondering what is it converting the files to. Is it just optimizing the resolution or what is it doing?

tricky to say, I don't know what software your using for encoding obviously if you optimism for the same rez as the phone it will probably run a bit smoother because it doesn't need to scale, though if it's not encoded in some kind of a mp4 H.264 thingy you'll probably need a different media player to play it, like that xyplayer (does twister player do other codec?)

I connect and select usb mass storage, created a folder named Videos and just copied my downloaded episodes and movies there. DoubleTwist plays xvid without any problems. Just watched Ne episode of entourage on my way back home from work on the train.

Adding movies to streak

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had any luck adding movies to the streak. Ive tried to put a digital copy from a dvd I bought on it and it never shows up. Can someone please help. And sorry if this is a repeat question.

I usually upload vidcast (video podcast) to the /video dir in memorycard. Works like a charm.
It is probably an codec issue...
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Use Rockplayer if your codec doesn's get recognized.
Otherwise I like Meridian player most.
Doesn't this type of movie have digital rights that only play on certain progs. I.e windows mob. Media player? I know I've had this issue with loading movies in this format to a phone before.
Is it in MP4 or avi? As the stock player wont play avi files N I would also recommend rock player.

Thanks I will give rockplayer a try.

VPLAYER seems to be the new kid on the block that plays all
DVDs on the Streak
The best solution I've found by far is SPB Mobile DVD. This software allows you to put a DVD into your computer's DVD drive, run the software, and it will convert a full length movie into an .avi file of about 500megs that plays really well with Rockplayer. Just copy it to your storage card and enjoy!
I got SPB Mobile DVD when using my former WinMo phones (came to the Streak from the Tilt2). Most of the SPB software I used on my windows phone is forgotten now with Android, but this gem really works well! Hope this helps!
can I bypass the download security on the stock att Dell streak so I can just put movies on it from the wed.... like from 4shared... when ever I try to download from a site it says unknown download not aloud..... any info would help

OK so now I have dolphin browser on it and rockplayer and still can't get movies off of 4shared it downloads really fast and its not the hole file.... man all I want on this sick 5" screen is some really nice movies. love the phone have had it for two months this thing is just awsome...... just really would like some movies.. PS no CPU any more need to be able to do it from my streak
When you say no CPU, do you mean you don't have a computer to move stuff from?
BTW, you won't be able to play digital copies from bought movies on the Android platform. They only work through iTunes devices or Windows Media Player. Since Android has neither, you can't play the file no matter even if you get it onto your phone. DRM will stop it from playing. I would see if you could find a DRM stripper, or just download it, or use a DVDtoMP4 or something program.
ya no computer to move movies on to the streak.... oh well thanks anyway im just going to pay someone to put movies on my sd card....
I hope I don't incur the wrath of the mods here, but if you have an unlimited data plan, you could always go to one of the well known forums that i'm not allowed to mention, where you will find rapidshare/megaupload links for hundreds of movies that have been converted for watching on smartphones. Of course, before you download any, you need to check you own an original copy ;-)

I used dvdfab, amazing program, converted a movie that i used to have on my ipod, it was set to mp4, converted it to mp4 for general devices, used rockplayer, works like a charm.
I tried playing it on streak player, it works but everything seems choppy.

Get a program (of your choice) that will rip a DVD into mp4 format. Choose the resolution of Android 800x480. Easier said than done sometimes, since DVD copy protection can sometimes be a factor. WHat I find is the best way is this.
1. Get ImgBurn, and DVDFab (for the copy protection). if this is not legal here, I apologize. Img is free, dvd fab has a free version
2. create an ISO of the DVD.
3. Get Elaborate Bytes Virtual Clone drive also free.
4. Mount the ISO you just created.
5. load up your DVD to mp4 converter
6. convert to mp4 with the android settings of 800x480
7. copy the resulting mp4 file to your streak. the default video player will play the file without issue, as well as any other program (rock etc) that supports playing mp4.
the program I use at home for the conversion to mp4 supports most major devices by name (i.e. iphone) but the streak is not listed. In playing around with it, I found there is a specific setting for "Android 800x480" and it works perfectly. Aiseesoft MP4 Converter Suite is what I use, and it allows for the conversion of DVD to mp4 and the conversion of basically any other codec out there to mp4 (xvid, divx, avi, wma, etc)
I've successfully converted the Hot Tub Time Machine, Night of the Demons, some Voyager shows, and all play without fail.
if you need more info, email me, I'll help where I can.

Epic, DLNA, and transcoding... settings help.

I currently have a couple of problems...
I have a collection of music that is in WMA Lossless on my Windows Media Center. I am using Winamp to trans-code the music before it is sent wirelessly to my Epic. The music will play on my epic, however I get errors sending it over DLNA, saying that the format is not compatible. I have tried WAV and HE AAC for trans-coding. I am running DK17 and the Quantum Rom.
Also, I cannot seem to get handbrake to convert DVD rips to a playable format on my Epic which also function over DLNA.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to which formats I should be trans-coding to, to get these files working both on my Epic and over DLNA?

What you play over dlna is decided by codecs on the playing device not by the phone, whatever the destination device is you need to check the codecs for that. Note that there are more to codecs than just the extension name there are settings that may have to be matched.
Since it seems like a good chance you are using a pretty basic device you best bet is basic codecs. Xvid and mp3.
If those dont work then you should probably start saving for something like a ps3 where dlna playing is quick and pretty easy

I used handbrake to rip DVD in mpeg4 format (I believe I used H.264 codec with .m4v extension). DLNA streaming from PC to Epic works using allshare.
K lite Codec pack FTW
What OS are you running on the PC?
I have been using K Lite Codec Pack for years on XP, Win7 and a few Vista machines its my favorite codec pack, cccp codec pack is another good one to check out most people swear by one or the other.
Just as Masterface7 said its a codec thing on the target machine. DLNA (All share) has yet to fail to play any file i have thrown at it when playing to systems that are loaded up with all the codecs and are set up to play the same files local of there own HDD or from LAN.

I think OP is trying to do the opposite of what you described. He's trying to play PC files onto the phone. In other words, the PC is the source and the phone is the target.
Unfortunately, even if the file can be played natively on Epic, it may not be playable via allshare.

Mmm ic ya that's kinda sucky then. i have not tried to play many video files "On the Phone" But i would like to no the answer also if some one figures it out but i have a feeling we would need a new DLNA.akp
after searching the forum for my question this one sort of nailed it on the head, I have the same issue
Using allshare from my phone to play video files from my pc using the intel viiv media share I can see the video files but when try and open in my phone to lay the video files it says unspported file format. i record tv through my pc it can play it in windows media center and windows media player but will not play on my phone
does anyone have an answer for this issue?
To make a note, All Share will not play any content that has DRM...
Maybe I missunderstood samsung but it seems to me that allshare only half works if u can't play files both directions. There always seems to be some video file that will not work but the fact that NO video files work makes me think that allshare sucks. Its to bad xbmc can't run on ARM chips

[Q] watching movies on the nook

hi,
I want to know whats the best way (format & quality, an app) to watch some movies on the nook. It no need to be in best quality but it should work.
;-) just for my wife to kill time before getting the baby in the hospital ....
do you have any suggestion?
thanks for your help!
My wife uses netflix, works great. What is the status of your nook? Stock or rooted?
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk
If you're running CM7...
I just did a lot of this for my wife who was convalescing...To covert to a format I can watch on the NC, I use AVS Tools video converter, but any converter will work fine for media you have rights to; there is an M4v* conversion preset for the iphone (720p) which works great on nook color (I run CM7 & use standard movie player). NO tweaks really needed, but I set the frame rate to 29.97 to match the source. Smaller video sizes don't seem to make much difference in file size. With CM7 the google videos you can dnload work great on Nook Color.
For loading, I suggest transferring via your SD card, wireless transfers of movies takes forever.
* Nice format as I can then load same files on my wife's ipad. Yeah she gets the cadillac tablet, I get the tweakers tab...
If running CM7 -
I suggest mobo player with the moboplayer codec for armv7vfp3 (two separate apps on Google Market). I've had extremely smooth playback with software decoded files that I was too lazy to convert to a supported format.
If encoding for Nook Color in general (CM7 or stock):
MP4 container, H.264 baseline profile, up to 854x480 resolution. Technically the screen is 1024 x 600 but NCs have a hardware limitation for decoding higher than 854x480, YMMV with that.
I use DVD Catalyst 4 (paid software, was $10? I think) which has several Nook Color presets (and updated recently for Nook Tablet) as well as other tablets and phones, such as the Xoom. Just easier to click the preset, adjust for subtitles/alternative voice track if needed, then set a whole batch of videos to recode.
I've used free applications like Handbrake, for which you can get a preset profile for the Nook Color. I just like the ease of DVDC4 for converting both digital and hard media.
on cm7
moboplayer decodes and smoothly plays back every movie I've ever "obtained" from the internet
no need to convert anything
The vlc beta works really well. I like mobo too, just had some syncing issues with a few of my xvid avis.

FREE: Handbrake with some preset profile, there were a few here. For a basic, no-frills, very customizable encoder, it's very good. And it's free.
PAID: IMO, DVD Catalyst 4. $10. I'm in no way affiliated with the company, just have been a very happy customer with the ease of use/results. With minimal tinkering I've gotten better results for some tricky conversions (e.g., multiple episodes, multiple sound tracks/subtitling options, widescreen) than with Handbrake. For me it's worth the money not to have to spend time tinkering with test encodes, tweaking settings, etc. so I can just batch jobs up and do other things.
YMMV, of course.

streaming videos from share to Nook Color
I "stream" all my videos to my Nook Color via 802.11g using CifsManager and VitalPlayer software decoding. Occasionally the video I'm watching will be hardware decoded by VitalPlayer if the codec is correct. And occasionally, if watching a big .mkv file I get a little chatter with only 54Mb 802.11g, but that's very rare.
It beats the hell out of copying video files to /mnt/emmc or /mnt/sdcard over wireless.
1) grab VitalPlayer from the Market (free version is OK, the ads only show up when the controls are visible)
2) grab CifsManager from the Market.
3) Configure your share on any old computer/NAS and put video files in it. Know these things: the workgroup, the share perms (username/password) and leave the NTFS perms at Everyone Full Control.
4) on your Nook Color, use Terminal to create folder /mnt/cifs
5) fire up CifsManager and connect to your share point, mounting it to /mnt/cifs, remembering to specify the path, workgroup, username and password. When the dot in CifsManager is green, you're mounted.
6) using File Explorer, or Root Explorer on your Nook Color (any Android file manager will do) browse to /mnt/cifs/[share name] and browse your video files. Select the video to play.
7) Select VitalPlayer if asked, and set to default if desired.
8) Wait a few seconds for VitalPlayer to start your video. Usually it will display "Software Decoding" before it starts playing.
I've never met a codec that VitalPlayer didn't like.
OR you could just download ES File Explorer and Rock Player from the market, and browse your Windows Media Server(s) on your network, playing files through Rock Player (which supports almost any file type for wireless streaming).
I use Mobo for the NC.
However, I do have a strange problem. On my Xoom, I can reach my NAS using ES File Explorer and it will stream to the Xoom.
If I use the NC to the exact same file, it will try to download the file and play it locally. I'm assuming that it will also only work for files that are re-encoded for the NC format and if its not, it will just simply chock on playback.
How does an app like Netflix do it? Do they have various encoded versions or is there some transition layer within the Netflix APK?

Not sure - I have used ES File to access movies, and they stream. If it's the wrong file format though ES File will open a browser window. So make sure it's a m4v of the right dimensions etc & it should stream.
The player is what supports the streaming Not the file explorer. Rock Player is the only one I've used that worked for streaming. ES media player would try and cache the file locally first.

viewing really wide screen movie
For those born before 1970, there's a great movie called How the West Was Won (HWWW). The aspect ratio is wider that 16:9. When I play on NC, the aspect ratio is wrong. Yet viewing the m4k file with VLC on my PC, the aspect ratio is correct.
TV shows and other movies display correctly on NC.
Why does the native movie player or the ES Explorer view change the aspect ratio. Any suggestions?

Moved video files to my phone, they were shrunk down in viewing size

I switched from iphone to android and wanted to load my videos to my phone. I dragged and dropped my videos onto the camera roll, when I did this it asked to convert them so I said yes. I do still have the original files. I am on Galaxy S4, but figured it was more of an android thing than a Galaxy thing. Here is a pic to what it looks like
http://i.imgur.com/nKW4nce.png
This is what it looks like, I do know the GS4's screen is bigger, but the size of the video on my GS4 is smaller than what it looked like on the iphone, so it clearly did get shrunk
The iphone video file is .mov and the phone converts it to .wmv
You didn't mention what kind of computer you were using our if you were using a program to copy over the files. If it asked to convert the videos, would it still copy if you said no? I would think all you need to do is copy the files from the iPhone to the computer then from there to the phone. I can understand you needing a program to get them off the iPhone to the computer but you shouldn't need one to go from computer to android. Need more information in order to give better advice or instructions.
I'm on Windows 8 and no program. When I drag the files into the camera folder on the galaxy it asks to convert them. If I say no, the files copy, but they don't play.

You connect your phone to your home Wi-Fi network. Fire up airdroid. Enter the URL it tells you into your PC browser. Then you can just copy files that way without anything tampering with the files.

That won't work the problem is that the native media player for the s4 doesn't support mov videos. When u do the transfer select no then download MX player as the person before said and load it up and when it ask u tell it to always open in MX player

I would imagine that airdroid didn't care about the file type. I also thought that the iPhone recorded in m4a file format, which is just another name for mp4 encoding. Not to be confused with avi divx mp4. The videos I made on my 4s looked like cack on other hardware.

Nah all iphones record in mov I figured that out when I had to burn a lot of videos into a DVD for someone. The reason y the 4s videos look good on that phone is because of the screen resolution. Think about it. The ps2 had amazing graphics on a old TV but when u hook it up to a full HD TV its not as good unless upscale the game.

[Guide] How to play smooth 1080p MKV with DTS audio on the HTC One

I have been experiencing persistent difficulties playing high definition 1080p MKV rips on my HTC One, since day one. The video playback frame-rate always drops and the lag was apparent. My HTC One is rooted, so i was able to install FPS Meter to test the frame-rate during playback and it would always oscillate rapidly between 10 and 30. I always used MX Player Pro for video playback on Android, so i stuck to the latter and in order to enable DTS audio support, there's the settings option in-app to download the required custom codec (it's the ARMv7 NEON for the HTC One), which coincidentally opens up a link on XDA where a developer has been compiling the DTS audio codec. Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2156254. You can download and extract the libffmpeg.mx.so to any folder on your phone. Then, in the MX Player Pro settings, point it to the location of the libffmpeg.mx.so file. But in my case, even after all that, the lag wasn't solved. I thought that maybe the Snapdragon 600 SoC wasn't powerful enough to handle these bulky (around 10 GB) 1080p MKV files. That is, until i came across the following FREE media players which solved the lag completely!
DicePlayer
1. Download and Install the FREE DicePlayer app from the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.inisoft.mediaplayer.a
Try to play your video file. For me, the DTS audio was supported right out of the box. Maybe it was due to the custom DTS audio file that i had already installed previously for the MX Player Pro? In any case, you should first try to play your video file to see if it's fully supported.
But if you get no audio, follow these steps:
2. Download the DTS Audio Codec to your PC: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7909146/DicePlayer-DTS-AudioCodec-libffmpeg.zip
3. Extract the downloaded zip file.
4. Transfer the extracted libffmpeg.so file to the root of the internal SD card on your Android device. DO NOT transfer it to a folder or sub-folder. Make sure to place it in the directory of your phone's internal storage.
5. Launch Dice Player on your Android device and open the Settings Menu
6. Scroll down to Custom Plugin and check the box
7. Go back to the main menu.
8. Select your video file. You should now be able to play DTS audio on your HTC One!
Archos Video Player
1. Download and Install the FREE Archos Video Player app from the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.archos.mediacenter.video
2. Download the Archos Video All Codecs Plugin to make sure that you have all the required video and audio codecs: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.m4rk3t.libcopy2
3. From the main menu, select "All Videos" and then choose the video file that you want to play.
(Credits to @spawndk for suggesting the Archos Video Player and its codecs pack)
VLC for Android
1. Download and Install the FREE VLC for Android app from the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.videolan.vlc.betav7neon
2. From the main menu, just select the video you want to play.
3. Enjoy!
Note: The video file tested has been copied onto the phone's internal memory via USB, so if you stream the video file from your PC or online, the result might differ. If your video contains embedded subtitles, the video playback might lag in VLC and the image itself might appear corrupt (that would also depend on your video file). Since the VLC for Android player is currently in beta, some bugs still need to be ironed out. However, in DicePlayer and Archos Video Player, the subtitles play without any issue. Conclusion: use DicePlayer or Archos Video Player if you need subtitles. I tested the smoothness of the playback with power save mode on and off - it made no difference, so you can leave power saver mode on (when enabled, the power save option lowers your Snapdragon 600 CPU frequency which could cause lagging and stuttering if there is a high-enough CPU load).
Since there are many different types of codecs and bit rates used in 1080p MKV files, here is the exact video file that i've used for this guide (just in case anyone wants to replicate the steps in this guide to verify if they get identical results with the exact same video file):
Pacific.Rim.2013.1080p.BluRay.DTS.x264-PublicHD.mkv
Runtime ............: 2:11:17
Size ...............: 13.8 GB
Video ..............: 1920x1080
Bitrate ............: 13300 kbps (H264 [email protected] CBR)
Audio 1.............: English DTS 5.1 Ch 1510 kbps
Audio 2.............: English OGG 2.0 Ch 64 kbps -Commentary By Director Guillermo Del Toro
Chapters............: Yes
Source .............: 1080p Blu-ray AVC DTS-HD MA 7.1-PublicHD
Subs ...............: English French Spanish Portuguese
Using MX Player Pro, that same video file would lag all the time. No amount of tweaking in the settings would fix it.
Disclaimer: I own that movie on original Bluray disc, but instead of re-encoding it myself (my PC is too slow and i'm far from being an encoding wizard to know the best settings for optimal compression while preserving image quality) to play on my mobile devices, i got it from torrents. I am in no way promoting piracy. If you like a movie, definitely buy it.
I also tried playing the same thing with mx player .. it played video but no idea .. then added dts codec from xda and now no hiccups at all
Dts is patented and the company that has the patent doesn't want to license it to any Android player, last year most players played Dts out of the box until they got trouble from the patentholder.
Software patents suck but to ban reverse engineered playback

HD mkv on HTC One
Hi, would just like to ask all poster above the following:
When playing this large HD mkv / 1080hp file where are you actually playing it from?
1. Are you streaming from PC to phone?
2. Is it stored on the phone itself?
3. Are you streaming it from the internet?
I ask this because I have been pulling my hair out over the last 3 days trying to get a 1080hp HD mkv rip of several different movies (between 3 and 5 gigabytes in size) to play successfully on my HTC One (M7). Movies are being streamed from a Synology NAS DS213j
NAS is connected to a VirginMedia SuperHub router.
This problem only happens when I try to stream over the internet via 3g to the HTC One.
Streaming over Wi-Fi over my LAN works perfect - can stream from NAS to Windows Laptop, my HTC One, the wifes iPhone, the kids P.C running XP four different movies at once or the same movie to all devices.
Tried bucket loads of different Video player for the HTC but nothing will play these movies stored on my NAS without buffer, lag, stuttering, choppyness whatever you want to call it.
I have done lots of research over the last few days and I am not sure whether it has something to do with Transcoding the movie on the NAS before being sent over 3g internet - really would like some clarification on this from an expert please!
According to a speed test, I am averaging 2mbps upload speeds on the virgin router - would an HD movie require more than this?
Thanks.

... I don't think 3G will be fast enough to keep up. What speeds do you usually get with 3G? There's also the horrendous latency as well which could be causing the problem...

Not really sure how to measure my 3g speed or about latency?
I don't seem to have problems with mpeg4 or avi up to 1.5gb haven't tried anything larger though yet?

Hi, would just like to ask all poster above the following:
When playing this large HD mkv / 1080hp file where are you actually playing it from?
1. Are you streaming from PC to phone?
2. Is it stored on the phone itself?
3. Are you streaming it from the internet?

I updated the post to add that the video file tested in this case is copied onto the phone's internal memory via USB. I haven't tested any of these video apps relative to streaming from PC or online but the limitation is not set on the HTC One in this case. It's most likely a bandwidth throttling or low performance decoding issue.
Thank You so much!
I am so glad to have found this. I actually used new MX Player Pro and downloaded their custom Codec directly from them and configured.
I have DTS and am streaming over my network on 2.4ghz on Shield Tablet (5ghz is an issue). Beautiful and stutter free.
I use ES File Explorer to browse my SMB shares and it launches MXPlayer to play the files. Everything is instant! I tried Dice Player because I own it from my first Transformer Tablet. It is painfully slow browsing SMB shares and crashes on file launch if using ES File Explorer. A shame really, back in the day it was great app.
I actually switched to a Win 8 Tablet just because I wanted to be able to watch ANY file on my shares on the tablet. Well that Win 8 tablet is now getting given to my daughter (who keeps "borrowing" it anyway) and I am getting a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2 to replace it.
Thanks again XDA-developers!!
Somtimes you may meet some problems, some MKV files playback without sound, while some MKV files even can not be recognized even with popular Android MKV players like BSPlayer FREE, Dice Player and MX Video Player.
The real reason behind that is MKV can be encoded by different codecs, some of those codecs are not compatible with your Android tablet or phone, so you are unable to play MKV videos on Android successfully. To get those MKV files to play nicely on your Android phone or tablet, the easy option is to convert MKV to Android commonly supported file format (H.264 encoded MP4 is highly recommended).
