HD2 Linux/Android Q&A Thread - ASK YOUR QUESTIONS HERE!! - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

ATTENTION!!
I am looking for someone willing to start and maintain a DETAILED FAQ post at the beginning of this thread. The person who chooses to take on this undertaking will assume the roll of OP in this thread. I will re-assign this post to the user who decides to do it.
If you are interested in taking on this assignment, please send me a PM.
I am also aware that there may be other FAQ's elsewhere but I do think that this is really the best place for it. What better place to have all the most frequently asked questions plus their answers then the top of the Q&A thread?
Hope to hear from you guys soon!

Ok i will hopefully be first.
Has anyone else noticed a fault when loading android. It isnt the normal fault where the os cant find the rootfs. Its basically a bunch of lines of code that look like this

I thought it was cause I had turned off the lighting control in windows mobile. but that had no effect. Btw it doesnt happen all the time.

I can't figure out how to get past the HTC screen using darkstone Froyo v1, Tried formatting but no go.

hopefully not the stupidist question that will be asked here!
do i have to have hspl in order to run the Android on my hd2?
if so, what is the advantage, other than being able to change roms and void my warranty (if i can't remove it) of having hspl on my phone.
also, if i install hspl does it wipe out my stock ROM?

1.you technically dont need hspl for android.
2. about what you said. changing roms and radios. it can be removed for warranty. search it.
3. hspl doesnt wipe anything. just kinda "unlocks" the possibility to change roms and radios.
hope this helps

Honestly the difference Is dependant on who you talk to. Winmo is considered to be for professionals.
Android has an active market. A lot of people consider windows mobile 6.5 to be dying as microsoft is coming out with windows phone 7.
As for benefits everyones likes are different. winmo doesnt have a twitter widget like android does. Also the android interface is easier for me to navigate. Winmo isnt hard I just prefer android.
The biggest thing is Windows mobile is really ugly. Sense is all over the phone to hide winmo's windows ce look.

Froyo_26.07.2010_by_DarkStone & HD2
Hello,
I downloaded the froyo build and the dual boot program.
I can boot one time into android, and when i try to boot again the device will never finish. I only see the boot screen with the linux logo and many lines....
It takes hours but it never boots into android.
After i completely removed the dualboot progam and all android files from my sd-card I can boot it one time.
My HD2 (with latest NRG ROM") freezes when i press the restart button in android.
Does anybody have a solution for this strange behavior?
Thanks for you quick respones in advance...

thank you. think i might wait awhile till i try it . after lookin through the treads it looks like some r unstable with apps.

I have installed andoid on htc hd2 6 different versions
my question is after u get the program up and running and its running good the whole day, the next day i reboot or turn the device on the program will not run again. I did notice that every time i install android the next day it will not boot up
So what makes me so crazy is i know its not fully ready but Man it ran great for the whole day. So all it does now is just hang with all the number and letters scrolling down and after a min or so will keep repeating the same line of numbers over and over again and the penguin at the top of the screen just like fall the others did with the black screen background.
the last build i tried was ----
HTC Leo: HD2HD2 Android Development
[BUILD] [27.07.2010] [mattc Leo + Froyo w/Sense RC1.1] [Kernel: Cotulla 2.6.32.9 #71] Radio is 2.10.50.26 g15.39.50.7u D2 egergy 8G on my tmobile phone now.
To me it just looks like every time i reboot the phone i lose android. so now i am going to reboot every single time install something in android i will reboot and see which one of the programs i install is messing me up.
Wow i just wish i could figure this out and i am having a great time trying all of the different versions from day to day. i know if not fully ready but man two different version ran just great on my phone for one whole day. any thing i left out just ask me and i will try to explain what i mean or what i didnt remember to say here. But man this is great and i am Great-full for all the people here doing all of this great work on this project, I think these people here are the best of the best... Thank YOU!!!!!

what about sip change on the htc sense builds of android? I install a keyboard but the htc ime still pops up

Does anyone believe that the android builds will be perfected, but also to work with any radio? or am I going to have to install hspl and then install a new radio no matter what? and finally how safe is installing a new radio? I have a uk orange hd2 radio software 2.06.51.07, only tweaks are to the ui such as cht so im pretty much stock.

I have the same problems sometimes. as you can see at the first of this thread. I honestly think it has something to with either the backlight control or the g-sensor. Just keep retrying it eventually starts working again. atleast with me it does.
Give them sometime to get sorted they are being bombarded with question to the point that people are even joining the irc channel to ask questions when they shouldnt be.

im using miris rom and eclair senseless right now.
how do i install bigger apk files?? it keeps saying something about parsing errors.. i searched the forums for "installing apps" but didnt get many answers.

People Tab

Hi all,
Newbie here
EX iPhone 3g user now HD user
I would like to ask, is it possible to change the People Tab on the HD to one like on the Touch Pro2 as an example.
I would prefer to have squares of faces than the flip faces that there are now.
all the best...
Any help is appreciated.
chill.
If I understand you correctly, you are referring to the difference in Contact tabs between Manila 2.1 (also known as HTC's TouchFlo 3D), and Manila 2.5 (known as HTC Sense), which will come out on the new HTC devices such as the Leo (also known as the Touch HD2).
As far as I know, the only way to use the new interface is to flash a ROM that has Manila 2.5.
I currently use Dutty's Leo R6 with WM6.5 and Manila 2.5. I really like it.
You can find it here. You'll have to register to be able to download it.
BTW - Welcome to the forum!!!!!!
Thanks Chris Cross,
This is what I am looking for.
Hope I have explained it right.
Not sure what Manilla 2.1 or 2.5 are, but thanks.
If I was to install the Dutty rom, would I loose any features ? Could I return to Original rom if I needed ?
Sorry for too many questions..
chill....
Yes, that is a picture of Manila 2.5.
Okay, I'll explain what Manila is.
Windows Mobile phones have a generic windows interface. HTC came up with their own layout and called it Manila. The more common name was TouchFlo. First was TouchFlo 2D, then came TouchFlo 3D, and now the new one is called HTC Sense (I guess they wanted to change the name now. ). In terms of your phone, you will see that the name Manila is still used (for example in registry settings etc.).
So, when you start your phone, it automatically goes into the Manila layout from HTC. In other words, the whole concept of having the slider at the bottom which takes you to the different tabs (and each of their sub-menus) etc.. is the Manila interface. Other Windows Mobile phones that are not from HTC don't have that (unless they have tried to copy the concept).
So, Manila version 2.1 (=TouchFlo 3D) had a Contacts tab with the little slider on the right, to switch between contacts (or you could flip through them too). Now, Manila 2.5 (which ships with the new HTC phones) changed that layout to look like what you are referring to - i.e. the big square pictures. You see 9 right away, and if you flip up, then 6 more appear for a total of 15. That is just one of the layout changes that are new in Manila 2.5. You will also see a new change in the Home tab, where below the clock, you now have Quick Links. They also look like squares and you can link them to a contact or a program for quick access directly from the home tab. Like I said, there are several new changes like that in Manila 2.5
I'll leave it at that for now. I need to stop for a second, but I'll come back to this same post and give you some info on flashing a new rom.
EDIT: see post below for info on flashing roms

Flashing a new rom means that you will completely erase the entire drive on the phone and you will install a brand new system. So... yes, you will lose everything that is in the internal storage (but not in the SD card).
You can go back to the rom your phone came with (referred to as a "stock" rom). To do that, you would have to flash (= install) the stock rom, and once again, you would lose everything you have at that point and you would end up with your phone as it came out of the box.
There is also backup software you can buy to backup all your programs, files etc.. in case you ever flash the stock rom again and you want things the way they are today. As far as I know, you cannot (or at least - should not) use that backup file on a rom other than the one that was installed when the backup file was created.
I have had my HD for 11 months. I flashed a new rom for the first time about 2 weeks after buying my HD. I think it is totally worth it. There are a lot of rom cooks out there that do a great job at making solid, stable roms. Dutty is definitely among the most well known and respected for the quality of work he does. He tries to keep his roms as close to stock as possible, but he makes changes that improve the speed and overall user-friendliness of the rom.
You do have to keep in mind, that if you flash a new rom with Manila 2.5 and Windows Mobile 6.5, some things might not work 100% right away because those are new releases. Dutty is constantly updating his rom to fix any known issues. Whenever an update is made, you flash that updated rom - and once again it means you lose your settings. But, the benefits of having a nicer rom outweigh the cons of having to set up your phone as you like it again. Eventually, the rom becomes really stable and you can go months without needing to flash anything.
If you are interested in flashing Dutty's new rom, let me know and I can give you links that explain how to do that.
All sounds very interesting. I'll chew on this a little.
Its not like I am unhappy with the HD, but just the People tab is a little frustrating to use.
I'll have a good look over at the roms section, and if I do give it a shot, I'll be knocking
I have flashed a HTC Touch before. A bit scary doing it, but went OK in the end.
The phone was freezing up, and was out of warrenty, so nowt to lose.
If its a similar process, then not to scary after all.
thanks
chill......
Yeah, it's the same thing. It's not too scary, but you just have to make sure you read about how to do it the first time, so that you don't make big mistakes. Technically, you could turn your phone into a brick (i.e. permanently dead), but that's really only if you somehow cut power to the phone during the process (e.g. if you unplug the cord or start with a low battery). If you just follow the steps - you'll be fine, and it will take about 10 minutes of actual flashing time. Once you have done it, you realize it is no big deal.
Check out the ROM threads - especially this tutorial!!! Depending on what type of ROM you have right now, you might need to do extra steps before flashing a newer version ROM. It is all explained in that tutorial. And Dutty's latest Leo R6 ROM can be found here. You can follow any developments or bug reports and fixes etc. regarding Dutty's Leo ROM in this thread.
Also, you might want to look and see if your stock ROM is available for download (in case you later want to go back to it - but I doubt you will). You can also go back to other stock ROMs if you want.
Just ask if you have questions.
Thanks a lot.
I've only been here 5 minutes and all this help. Nice place here.
There are Lots of Roms, so would need to chose carefully. I have been trying SPB Mobile Shell, which is quite nice. Not a full replacement rom, but a nice touch.
Thanks again, I will read on.

[ROM]1-20-10 WM 6.5.3 Build 23518 by egzthunder1

Hey fellas,
Since everything has been very quiet around here, I figured I would try to apply my newly acquired cooking skills to try to get something going for the BA. Now, cooking for the Vogue and cooking for the BA are two very different and separate monsters. You see?, there is a ton of info available for newer style kitchen, but very little info for older style (let alone on porting a rom). So much crap to go through (XIP, SYS, modules, files, aghh... my head hurts already). Long story short, after two weeks of persistent reading, trial and error, I have finally managed to get a good, stable, really fast port of 23518!!!!
Now, keep in mind that this is a hybrid xip (meaning I had a part of a 23001 rom, which was "injected" with stuff from 23518 to make it into that).
COME N' GET IT
Thanks to:

Bug List
1. ActiveSync doesn't sync.
2. No SMS through Outlook. I used SMS through PocketCM and it works fine (both send and receive).
3. Not really a bug but worth mentioning anyways:
Edit the registry
HKLM\controlPanel\Input: Erase the "Redirect" entry
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\DeviceBeta: Erase the whole folder - This will get rid of the "Beta" that will show up in the home screen. The shell has already been patched, but this have to be removed from the reg by hand.
I would include these changes as a cab, but I still need to learn how to do that
4. Wifi works ok, but there are no notification bubbles. Once Wifi sees a network, you will only see a blank square. I think this might point me in the right direction towards fixing the other bugs since I believe they are related.
One for the road...
omg that's so cooooooooooooooool
looking forward to see your ROM
P.s: no SMS? (

Hi Egz,
Although I'm not really using my BA much these days since I got my TP2, I wish you much good luck and success with this new ROM. When you release it, I'll certainly give it a try and critique . Its great to see more people getting their hands "dirty" digging into the innards and inventing/remodeling. I wish that I had the free time to indulge in this too. I can well imagine the thrill of having a new ROM successfully boot!!!! Again, Best of luck!!

Thanks a bunch, moti! The only couple of issues I have left are ActiveSync (same issue that xplode had a while back) and SMS from Outlook not doing squat. So far, I have read a few suggestions:
*Replace sync.dll's from the Shell (and replace tmail somewhere else) (trying out right now)
*Use a patched version of core.dll, which I believe is what xplode did on his.
I will keep you all posted...

d-two faced the same sync issues with 28008, and he has overcome them, maybe he is willing to help. and when you say sms with outlook, are you talking about the big outlook or pocket outlook, because it would be a major buzzkill, if sms wouldn't work on the blueangel, but no loss at all, if it concerned the PC. btw. if it is about the pc: how is that done in the first place. i installed office 2010 lately and haven't had much time to really look into it.

Hey Chef,
I had already pm ed d-two before I started building my rom asking for some guidance, but I never got an answer from him. Maybe if you ask him....
As far as the SMS, it is poutlook that does not want to compose SMS. I have been able to send sms via PocketCM, so if anything I can cook PocketCM .29 in the rom (which I personally like more than the pim app from MS anyways) and go about it that way.
Edit: Pm ed him again today. Hopefully, he will reply soon... I am fresh out of ideas and I have already asked in several different forums about it.
Thanks for this ROM
Hi egzthunder1,
I initially tried your posted ROM nk.nbf. it has many bugs. One thing though it has SIM Manager and SIM SVCS (STK??? i though no STK since WM5). Should you continue cooking this please spare this function.
Funny in this rom i could not make NEW SMS message.
Thanks and more power...

The only constant in this world is change....

Why a cooked ROM?

I am a MOD at a blackberry hybrid site where I used to build hybrid operating systems for blackberry devices. This winmo stuff is like "greek" to me. I don't see a point in a custom ROM here for anything more than looks and a few tweaks that I can do on my own.
Are there leaks with ROMs frequently like there is with blackberry?
Would you suggest a Droid ROM or winmo? and why?
Droid ROMs can be fully loaded to a winmo device correct? Why not if you wipe the device and reload it?
Lastly, I constantly am getting the user name and password pop up for my yahoo email, but I keep entering it and clicking save but it never does. Why?
I forgot to mention that I have switched and now have the HTC HD2 and love it!
Cant really beat the HD2 IMO
anyway,
People cook their own ROM's for there needs, jazz them up a bit make them look pretty, update to the latest versions of the software and apps, take apps out to save space so you can install on the sd card, cooked ROM's are more stable faster, look better, check out the ROM thread once you flash you'll never go back stock.
Droid or Winmo, lol you got no choice mate!! (on the hd2 anyway)
email, I set mine up with .co.uk instead of .com once and it for ever asked me for user-name and password till i twigged on.

Ok, so nothing like building a Blackberry OS. I meshed and played with 1300 files to make a faster smoother operating system. Looks had nothing to do with it. I see that I will stay stock. I can delete my own apps and tweak my own reg files.

Thats exactly what ROM-Cooking for WinMo is about as well (apart from the tweaking and optical stuff). And besides that, the cooks often have builds of SoftwareElements that havent been released yet.

People cook their own ROM's for there needs, jazz them up a bit make them look pretty, update to the latest versions of the software and apps, take apps out to save space so you can install on the sd card, cooked ROM's are more stable faster, look better, check out the ROM thread once you flash you'll never go back stock.

Amen to that.
I've had my HD2 for about 6 months now and it is my first WM device, when I first got it I thought the same as you, couldnt see what all the fuss was about with custom roms.
I'm still on a stock rom just now but the more I read on here the more I'm getting the itch to flash a custom rom, I'm putting it off though because I know that once I try one I wont be able to stop myself.........
Trust me you'll get the itch sooner or later.........
I went custom about 2 months ago and I have to say I honestly have not had to reboot the phone at all whereas on the original stock ROM the phone would lockup and freeze almost daily!!!
ALL HAIL THE MASTERCHEFS!!!!!!
NOOB - T-Mobile UK HD2 unlocked - no O2 connection..
Mong, sorry really long day......
Hey dubie,
As a lot of other people have put it, cooked roms are generally of a better quality than the stock roms. However they are still winmo roms so dont expect them to be as stable as their less customisable rivals. But thats just the small price you pay for a far better overall operating system.
Going back to your some of your other questions.
Currently it is not possible to run Android on the HD2, however there is a group of people feverishly working to try and fix this situation, I would like to see this done, but I am quite sure I would stick with winmo as my main os.
Unfortunately due to the varied nature of the hardware within winmo phones there is no current android rom that just works on all winmo phones. Some phones have android ports but many others do.
You mentioned about "Droid ROMs can be fully loaded to a winmo device correct? Why not if you wipe the device and reload it?"
I think you are talking about the use of Haret to run android roms from windows?
Haret is generally used in the developing stages of a linux rom to avoid having to flash a possibly buggy os. I beleive it is possible to flash a working linux rom to a winmo phone but it is usually not done, it is far more accepted to use haret to boot linux roms.
Thanks for all the replies. As a blackberry hybrid builder I made many builds that were way better than stock and more advanced so I can understand what you all are saying. I just am not seeing it yet in the posts. The ROMs I see made by people all have the registry tweaks I have already done and visual changed from the stock look. That's it. Am I not seeing something?
Yes your not seeing the full picture. Most cooks will use newer build components then what you will find in a stock ROM. Yes some of these components can be loaded through cabs but some can not. It is usually better to cook main OS apps and app components into a rom then loading them later. This tends to make things unstable and buggy. Yes a lot of cooks make theirs ROMs full of eye candy but that is only the icing on the cake so to say. You are coming from a phone that had nothing in terms of eye candy and was solely built for for function/productivity a newer WinMo phone is built to have both productivity and a pretty wrapper to go with it.
Don't worry the more you dig into the more you will understand and the more the urge will hit you to try a custom ROM.
Ok, so what ROM do you all recommend and why? I would like to test one out. I'm not interested in eye candy, just performance. I do not care about many apps either. Only twitter and Opera basically. I don't face book or use gmail.
Let me know what you all think or suggest.
I do have another question. Why do I keep getting this email user name and password popup? I keep entering it and checking the save password box but it still randomly pops up frequently. I have already tried deleting the yahoo email and resetting it back up.
You can start looking through them. There are some stripped down versions here and there but most will have other apps on it simple because thats what the cook uses.
The best idea for finding a rom that is right for you is just to browse the roms forum, look at what is included/removed from each rom and find one that matches the applications/functions you need.
make sure you follow this guide(or the one this links too if you have the american 1024 hd2) for updating your rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=609477
most of the time the cooked rom is not faster than stock, but it got the latest updates on all applications, and thats nice =) bugs are fixed. Some cooked roms have a lot of bugs, so try a couple and find one you like
Ok, WTF now. I have read so many posts and searched my butt off here and all for nothing? Seems I have this SPL 2.10 whatever that is and cant load that HSPL program so I can flash a custom rom. WTF? how many darn steps do I have to go through to load a ROM on this phone? Why is this so complicated? If the phone is wiped, why can't whatever I want be loaded on it?
So what do I do now?
What is a hard and soft spl?
Why would I want to downgrade just to load this hspl?

[BUILD] Froyo_Sense at HTC HD2 >Full build<

go to www.windowsmobile.com/getstarted
download step 2 and 3 if you don't have that
then just follow the instructions
start microsoft activesync on your PC and connect your device

Then,
download HSPL, install it and open it, now you can see at your mobile it's installing
don't shock if you see ''we've hacked it'' that's good
well, that's done
now download CustomRUU and place it on your desktop
after that download an RadioROM that's higher then 2.08....(the first downloads)(this link is for the HTC HD2, for other HTC phones just search it at Google) and place it also on your desktop
your mobile must still be connected with ActiveSync
use CustomRUU and follow the instructions, press next enz
then you come to a menu with a button UPDATE, press that one
now i'ts updating, first on your mobile you see the colour screen, then just wait
then on your pc and mobile you see a progress balk, just wait till 100%, and you mobile restarts
now that's done, you can start with android stuff
download the Froyostone_Sense.7z
unzip the file, then place the folder ''Android'' to your mobile's SD card
wait till that's done and the folder is on your mobile
then unmount your mobile from your PC
go to the file manager app on your mobile,
file manager>storage card>android
then tap the file CLRCAD, sometimes there comes a little install screen, tap YES on that
well, after tapping CLRCAD, nothing happens, so that's good
then tap the file HARET, then there comes a progress balk with ''booting linux''
well, then you just need to wait
your mobile's screen turns black, and first there come little white numbers enz, that became bigger ones later
well, just wait a few minutes till your mobile restarts
first you see the white screen with HTC in the middle
then after a minute or something there comes a black screen with Android in the middle
now you're done, and you can start figuring out how everything works

what is the difference between this thread and others?
i dont want android on a sd card but i want to replace the whole WM system by android and use the phones main memory and ram. To do this you can use the architecture of the HTC Desire HD, because it is almost the same product.
What the h....?
This is very old stuff from Darkstone.... 7th of August? What kind of joke is this?
The ops better close this thread.
You mean I will be able to run Android on my HD2 then? This cannot be happening! What a Christmas present...

waste of my time reading this stupid post...what a dumb guy...who allowed him to post this stuff? I think you better stay in the bathroom and do what you really good at...
You could easily instructed: Copy Android folder into SD, and Click on those two files...and wait.
It make you looked so stupid by writing three pages on something that can be said and done via just one line....
My opinion - if to do faq for beginners that to do properly. Why in a cap it is told that it is necessary to establish custom rom and hspl? When it is possible to update simply an firmware on last official? I met many posts where people complained of those or which other problems at me was not. And at all these people stood custom firmware. Conclusions do.
Sorry for my english
please Screenshots

you have a good intention, but you're just too funny. you're making a guide in a forum full of similar guides that are more comprehensive than yours.

[Q] Why not to install Android?

Hi!
I would like to switch to Android on my htc hd2, since the rest of my family now has Android. But there are some questions I simply can't find answers to in the forum! I realize installing Android is on my own risk, but:
- is it legal? I am guessing so (since it runs on Open Source Linux and Open Source Android, I think...), but can't really find an explicit confirmation of this. Somewhere it was written that htc Sense is copyrighted, does that mean you can't legally use the touch screen on htc hd2 without the predelivered Windows Mobile version???
- Are there any parts of the phone that don't work with Android? I am thinking about gyro sensors, GPS...
- If I decide to switch, I want to switch completely. But as far as I can read the installation descriptions, it seems they install Android on top of Windows? That you actually start Android from Windows? Doesn't that slow down things unnecessarily?
Thanks for any concrete answers!
my friend....there are really two things u can do here...
1) either go for a SD based android rom which u can boot from win6.5 (and its not slower at all)
2) go full android by installing a nand version.
benefit of both is, you can go back to stock win6.5 anytime and every thing will work just fine.
Also dont worry about legality - most of here use all sorts of roms...
And all parts of the phone works in android...
So the difference is that in the nand version you have to totally reinstall Windows, while in the SD solution it's never even deleted?
Yup
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App

i had it on my sd card about 18 months ago, then saw a video on youtube about nand versions instead,i didn't like the sd card version cos everytime i rebooted the phone it would load windows mobile and i was sick of putting zimage & intrid files on my sd card.i REMOVED windows mobile 6.5,got all the required things such as recovery, the right radio, the right hspl version, then flashed my rom via recovery using magldr 1.13.once uve done it once, you'll never look back again lol
THE HD2 IS A BEAST................TREAT IT LIKE 1 LOL
HOPE THIS HELPS................FEEL FREE TO HIT THANX
NAND Android installed
Now that was really easier than I thought, thanks to the excellent guides in this forum! I've already received messages and a phone call, within 1 hour of deciding to go for it!
Hopefully the good feeling will last, I never quite got Windows Mobile on the htc hd2 to work as I wanted...

Glad to see you installed a NAND ROM instead of and SD ROM. My experience with NAND is that they seem to offer a bit better battery standby life over SD and are smoother operating. You may want to try a couple of ROMs and see which one you like best. I am currently using Tytung's Nexus HD2 v3.0 with his newest r12 kernel and it has been very stable with everything I need working perfectly.
htc hd2 + android = best phone i have ever used
working flawlessly
