Found a Mytouch Slide

Okay guys, i have a Samsung Galaxy S Phone. However i went camping this wekkend with my girlfriend and found a mytouch slide, a few scrathes but it turns on after i charged it but the imei seems to have been blacklisted. since it has a password i was unable to check anything or contact information but the phone itself does not work after reading that once an ime gets blacklisted, there is no going back.
so my question is.
since ill be going overseas, it would make a good present somehow if the imei is only blocked in the US. So id like to comfirm this that whenan imei is blacklisted, its only in the us and will work in other countries such as ecuador which is where im going.

You could turn it in, as its a serial numbered product it has a decent chance of making it back to its rightful owner. If you lost your phone would you want someone to try and get it back to you or to take it to another country to give away as a "gift"?
Moral speech over... The list of blacklisted IMEI isn't normally shared across countries, I would imagine it would be fine in ecuador.

Hmm. Well it could make it back but will it really?? If i go to tmobile you think they will really return it knowing it wont work any longer and there is no way it will get unlisted.

I have no knowledge of t-mobile, but I had an ameritech phone lost once and yes, someone turned it in to them and they mailed it back to me.
I can't image t-mobile would just pitch it in the trash and say ta hell with the customer.
If the person filed a police report and you turned it in to the police it would also make it back that way.
Lost/stolen property does often get returned when recovered. Its just that most stuff gets thrown away, sold on ebay, used, or given to someone else instead of being turned in.

Belive me they will get it back to the owner. U should turn it in like the other dude said wouldnt u want someone to do that for you.

I'm no expert, but I'm sure once a phone gets returned to a carrier and they return it to the original owner, they can PROBABLY un-blacklist the IMEI number.
But seriously, if I lost my phone I would be eternally grateful if someone were to turn it in.
Just do it for the karma, man.

Just for the fun of it I asked T-mobile and they said that they DO and WILL return the phone to the owner if one is mailed back to them. The girl said they will contact the owner if they are still one of thier customers. If not they will mail it to the last known address. Just a FYI. Return the phone and don't be so cheap to give a gift that someone else paid for..

I assumed as much, thanks for clearing that up for the OP. Hopefully they decide to return the poor persons phone. Who knows what kind of information they have on there they would like back.

I Stopped by the tmobile Corp today since i was buying a case for my phone and getting an unlock request made for my vibrant. Anyway i gave the phone to a Store Manager but i dont think they were able to log in since it has a password. I guess they will figure it out how to get his information.... Anyway. Job done. I saved the Day and now off to get ready to leave the country and get wasteddd all day, everydayyy. Hahahaha

I work for T-Mobile. They will definitely try to get this phone back to the owner. This would make someones day - do the right thing and PM me if you have any questions.

Ok, so as dodgy as this is going to sound to some people, its the truth....
I lost my DHD a few months back and got an insurance claim to replace the phone (thank god, id be lost without it)
So.... 2 days ago my friend was cleaning out their car and found it down the back of the seat (where they promised they had checked before) and gave it back to me.
I went to the shop where I filed the insurance claim (Carphone Warehouse) and tried to hand it back to them, they got the manager who said "This doesn't happen much, we can't take it back, just keep it"
But the phone is blocked, only from calls, it can still be used to access the Android Market etc. Is there any way around this block so I can sell/give it away.
P.S. I promise this isn't a lie and because I tried to give it back, I'm pretty sure its not illegal either.

There would be no legal way for you to unblock it as far as I know, they lock the phone out with it's IMEI number.

It has nothing to do with carphone warehouse, if you return the device to working order, you will be defrauding there insurance company! Imo you should just throw it away.

shakadamus is correct. Once blocked they cannot be legally unblocked.
I'm pretty sure it would be blocked to most of Western Europe now as well, as databases are now shared.
EDIT: Read your insurance documentation, I'm pretty sure it will mention "if you find your phone, return it to us, as legally we now own it" or words to that effect.

My phone stopped working around New Year, after many weeks of new SIM's, sending for repairs etc it turned out that someone else had lost their phone, but T-Mobile blocked MY IMEI number. Although it was their mistake it took several weeks to get them to reactivate the phone, so it can be done, but it was not straight forward. As the insurance company has already paid out on your handset, they might not even entertain reactivating it, but it's worth a go, you have nothing to lose in trying.

Keep it for spare battery and covers/other parts
It would be a loss to just throw it away not to mention stupid.
If WIFI still works and they don't wanna take it back maybe you could still sell it or use it for urself.

if the insurance company say you can keep it, just stick it on ebay or something, as long as you are clear that it is a black listed handset you should have no problems, you might be surprised a what some people will pay for some things on there.

That's what I'd do, I'd strip the covers, battery and even attempt to remove the main board from the unibody case then sell it all as spares, minus the main board.

Throwing it away is pretty stupid lol, like the others said strip it for parts ..

but my xperia has been stolen, most likely by one of two coworkers. i don't have any proof other than i left the phone at work and neither one of them found the phone. i work for a verizon inderect btw.
so i don't know what to do go to the owner and explain and possibly get fired or ostracized, i have no proof, and i'm pretty sure the phone was wiped. though i did call verizon and they told me they can blacklist the esn though i recently filed paperwork for my employee line with that esn so that will be interesting.
any suggestions, i'm really pissed and don't know what to do, i really don't want to think i work with such ****ty people that they would steal from a co-worker, and i really don't want to think i work with people stupid enough to think i won't catch them.
any suggestions?

I don't know if they can but can't they track it? I mean I am almost sure they can use the GPS in it to track it. If you work for verizon shouldn't they understand?

yeah they do, thing is i hadn't activated it yet, had just submitted the paperwork last week, and i am 99.99% sure i left it at work on the fourth, both the employees (one of em my manager) said they hadn't seen the phone.
thing is verizon can't track it if it's not active, and i'm also very sure the phone was wiped, as it's not showing up in the market as far as i can tell.
even if it does get activated by them (i.e. verizon) it has to be *228 option one for the phone to take the activation. but i can't believe that the employees would be that stupid to steal it, what are they gonna do keep it? and me not notice. plus i'm gonna report the esn as lost or stolen so it'll be a bad esn.
i must have just lost it but i have looked everywhere and can't think of where else it could be but one of them having taken it.
just venting more than anything. sorry for cluttering the forum up with my personal **** btw.

Hey, you gotta release your stress somewhere . I was always under the impression that the carrier can be tracked your phone easily but don't do it because you are on a contract and need to buy something new from them.
Two years ago I bought a phone, used it for 15 minutes and then switched back to old phone so that I can return the new one without going over the 30minutes return policy. The customer service rep can distinguish exactly how many minutes were used on each phone the previous night. This means that they know which phne is using their services at all time. I'm with rogers gsm network

I think I read somewhere in this list of comments that you were sure the phone was wiped. Any chance that it isn't? You could try something like LookOut's "Plan B" from the Android Market web page, and if it is on your account still, you can tell it to install on the phone. When/if it does, it would start tracking it and tell you where it thinks it is.
If the phone has been wiped, then it is pretty much down to the procedures you described. Block the ESN/IMEI, report it as stolen, etc. If you can't prove it was the two other folks, then don't say it was them. Simply state your phone has been lost and/or stolen. Say you already did your due diligence of reporting it gone. I guess this is also the place to make sure that you have backups of your SD cards, as well as always to install some sort of remote-control-and-location service on your phone. If it doesn't get wiped, then you can do so. If it is wiped, then less to worry about other than your loss (and documents on the SD card).

well the least you could do is put a poster where it was stolen and offer a reward.
Also ask if you can look at the security camera feeds if the location has cameras.
Makes sure you ask to check the camera as soon as possible they are usually deleted after a while.

Keep checking Craiglist in your local area? Some stolen merchandise end up there.

Getting the ESN on the lost list is a great step but if they work there too couldn't they take it off the list? Keep that ESN and keep up with ebay and craigslist. Thats mess up, gotta be some kinda low to take from a co worker. They had to know you were gonna report it lost, they stole a paper weight.

If you have the box it has your serial # on it. Verizon has a record of your phones serial number also. They take it down when you activate it.

Repair Shop that stole my phone

I'd like to share a word of caution so hopefully you don't have to go through what I have.
About a month and a half ago my phone was having touchscreen issues so I was looking around and happened upon repair shop in Orlando, FL that was selling screen repairs on ebay for $80. They had good positive feedback from other people who had sent their phone to them so I decided to do it.
Long story short, for an entire month they had my phone and kept making excuses on why my phone wasn't fixed yet and informed me that the digitizer was not the problem but a cable between the digitizer and the motherboard was, but they had already fixed it and needed $30 more bucks and were going to drop it in the mail as soon as they got the money for the extra part, they had got a shipping code and everything.
Given the choice, I would've told them to send it back without fixing it but they already had, and since I had been a month without my phone I just said fine and I paid them again. And that's when they ceased all communication with me. I opened a case with eBay and after a week they decided I deserved a refund of my $80, however there was nothing they could do but politely ask the ebayer to return my phone.
So, as a warning, do not deal with this ebayer

Don't suppose you know your IMEI number, or S/N of the phone? I wouldn't be surprised if it wound up on EBAY for sale again.

unfortunately not I forgot to write them down before I sent it off..and yeah I've been keeping an eye out for it, but I'm sure they would be smart enough to do it through a different account..

have you tried notifying the carrier you use? sometimes they save the imei of the device you use when you make a purchase or even just trading sim card, although few do it that way.

Treat the situation as a stolen phone. Contact your carrier and tell them it was stolen.

I would definitely do the same thing as well. Theft has all forms so if you are prepared to do some work then you should even call the police on them.
Have you read their Terms and Conditions? Is there anything that you can go to the police with? Do you have a record of your shipment to them?
I was very sorry to hear about you experience.

It's difficult when this 'shop' had good reviews on Ebay. That typically says it's okay to send something to them as you're going to get it returned, but what I read is ridiculous. Since I haven't seen anyone else recommend it, why not A) report the phone as stolen and B) report your stolen phone to the police.
Granted it's just a phone, but even then it's property and it sounds like this repair place is in the same area you're in, though I could be wrong.
I hope you get your phone back. Sorry to hear it even happened. :-(

Don't know the shop and don't know the guy posting this problem. We should trust what the OP says because? Just saying! Nobody should go calling anyone. If what the OP says is in fact true, then there is legal recourse if he has proof someone has his phone.

Just called my carrier and they said they can't really do anything except suspend my service, but since I took my sim out before I sent the phone, I don't need that. They didn't have record of my atrix's IMEI number, so no luck there.
Anyways, I'm saving up money to get another atrix(because I just love this phone) so I'll be getting another one soon..

Thanks for the suggestion, but those are long gone

Should have installed avast and enabled the anti theft option.
at this point you could have totally locked the phone down and even if he factory reset somehow it wouldnt matter

Just always remember karma is a really you know what and what goes around comes around

My problem is, that I think that phone was lost or stolen by previous owner and I´m afraid, that police will go after me and they´ll took that phone back. My friends told me that police can track lost or stolen phone so now I´m afraid of it. I paid 200€ for phone plus 50 to my friend for fixing the screen. If they take that phone back I would simply lost 250€.
Is there any way to change IMEI or to do something for prevent police of track that phone?
I tried this method and IMEI is "changed", but I think that is only the mask and real IMEI is still saved in phone.

They will do nothing, stop being afraid, and mod the imei is illegal. don't be scared if they catch you it will not be about a imei of a phone.

Really? I know some cases when phones were given back to their owners, and if I spend 250€ on phone it would be just money thrown in air... Also, I don´t mind about ilegality of changing IMEI, my trade wasn´t legal at all.
And what do you mean by - don't be scared if they catch you it will not be about a imei of a phone? - They can localize me by IMEI number or?

xda is a legal website, so here nobody will tell you how to change imei ...
and they will not call fbi for a phone ... they have others things to do !

On my old old HTC phone i got broken imei or efs files after flashing roms and kernels and I wasn´t able to connect to GSM network. Someone fixed it by changing these numbers or something, I really dont know, I´m not into these things at all...
Maybe I should better use my old Z1 compact, I got worries now. :/ Anyway, thanks for all responses....

Check out this thread, this is as far as you'll get on this site. XDA is an american site and changing IMEI is illegal in USA, hence no one's allowed to give you a concrete solution. Don't ask me because all I know is in the below thread.

If this "dude" is a shop then I would take it back to him for a refund. You bought this in good faith so he is the one who will get the police after him (if at all). The question is why do you have reason to believe the phone is lost or stolen?? If it was then they would most likely ring their provider and have the IMEI blocked.... if that has happened then the device is as good as dead. Changing the IMEI is illegal in almost all places...

Well, that dude is shop, but he sold me that phone without papers, warranty etc. Price was really good. New S5 cost around 400€ at my place. And I think it was found or stolen, otherwise he would give me warranty papers and all those things... And I think, that in my country they cant just blacklist IMEI. I´m going to visit that man after christmas and we´ll see....
