Strange phone issues with Samsung Galaxy S - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hi,
I bought a Samsung Galaxy S about a month ago, and have been having odd problems with it since the off. Has anyone else had these sort of symptoms:
1. I occasionally lose my data connection - the icon disappears from the top of the screen and whilst I can still make and recieve calls and text messages, I cannot download anything in any app. The only way I've found to get my data connection back is to reset the phone. This happens maybe a couple of times a week.
2. My WiFi seems to suffer from a similar problem. I can be browsing the web on Wifi, then suddenly I'll not be able to download anything anymore. The wifi icon is still visible, but I'll basically be unable to download anything until I switch the wifi off and back on again. Then, it starts working as normal again.
In both these above scenarios, I think I've narrowed it down to primarily happening after I use the Android Market, but it's difficult to tell as it's very intermittent.
3. A couple of times since getting the phone, I've been unable to make or receive any calls. Even switching the phone off and back on didn't help - my signal bar was showing I had a signal and my data connection was still active. Couldn't tell if this was a network problem or not though as there weren't any people nearby on the same network as me. After a while, it started working normally again.
4. The email client randomly lost all of my email settings. One day I was receiving all my emails, the next day I had no email accounts set up at all.
5. I installed Sensor Dump and Phone Explorer to see what data was coming in from the sensors, and have noticed that the light sensor never sends any data. Is this normal?
I also have the usual slow-down issues, etc, but the above have got me stumped as I can't find anyone else reporting the same issues. When I first got the phone, I went crazy installing a load of Android apps, so initially I blamed the software I'd installed. After a reset and being a bit more selective with the apps I install and use, I'm still getting the same issues. I just can't pin down whether this is a faulty phone that I should return, or if there are software issues either relating to the way I'm using the phone or just with bugs in the firmware.
Has anyone else had anything like the above happen with their Galaxy S?
Thanks,
Chris.

I've experienced no.2 several times, wifi just stopping all data traffic. Not found out what causes it though.
As for the other problems, I haven't experienced any of those. Do you use automatic brightness on the display? If not, problem no. 5 might be caused by the sensor being turned off.

thanks for the reply - at least I'm not completely alone!
I have the automatic brightness turned on - which is why it seems odd. To be honest, I've never actually see the auto brightness do anything. It always seems to be the same brightness to me.
Cheers,
Chris.

Strange Problem
Hi,
I've experienced no.4 some times. My inbox did not show some older mails.

I think it might be normal that older mails disappear from the inbox after some time? My problem was that everything went. I had three email accounts set up, all downloading emails every hour. Then, one day I went into the email app and there were no accounts at all! I had to set it all up from scratch again.
I hear there are better email apps available for Android, so I'll probably switch to one of those soon.

Hi,
I bought a Galaxy S on Orange UK in July. I'm having the same problem as 1. quite consistenly now.
I thought it might be related to the green power battery saver app I had installed, but i've removed this and still having the problem.
I'm using the phone in several central London locations so I think it's unlikely to be a problem with the data network.
Any suggestion would be welcome since I'm often without data.
Thanks
Nik

ive 1 and 3 but very rarely so far
rebooting fixes it for me
running froyo jp3
for email i use K9, it's almost the same as the integrated mail, only much better (PUSH imap)

I'm actually getting this happen a lot now. It seems to be getting worse, which makes me think it might be a hardware fault. I generally lose my data connection once or twice a day minimum, but some days the phone is virtually unusable.
I have found that it's more likely to happen after using Wi-Fi, so my other thought is that when coming out of Wireless mode, the phone may not switch the normal 3G/HSDPA data connection back on. Most of the time I can fix this by putting the phone into flight mode and then back out, but sometimes it needs a complete reset.
The other problem I've noted with the data connection is that sometimes it seems to rapidly switch between HSDPA and 3G - the data icon at the top of the screen keeps going from '3G' to 'H' then back again. I guess it has something to do with signal quality but it only seems to happen when the phone is showing a good signal strength (four bars). The problem I've found when this happens is that it virtually locks up any ongoing data transfers, making it impossible to download a webpage or check my emails. Strangely the only way I've really found to stop this happening is to move somewhere where my signal strength is weaker, such as indoors, which then seems to make the phone stop attempting to use HSDPA. I can't find a way to switch off HSDPA from within the phone's settings while leaving 3G on.
I really am now finding that using this phone is an increasingly frustrating experience. I've found even more weird faults, such as sometimes my text conversations show the wrong people's names up against them, and then my replies go to the wrong people. It's like an insane, shiny mess of a phone!
Chris.

I am indeed experiencing same problems above..it just drive me crazy with a need of complete reset everyday..
turning on n off flight mode won't change anything..
I really hope someone can bring a miracle to solve this problem..
I'm on XXJPC

setting the APN parameter(Setting-->Wireless and network-->Mobile Networks-->Access Point Names-->New APN) to 2G only seems to solve the 'lost data connection' problem..
I am connected 24/7 now..
Give a try guys!

Phone freezing

Hi,
I have a big problem with my Tytn (sorry if this is already been posted). Quite often the phone freezes, making it impossible to turn on again. The only thing that works is a soft-reset. What is worse, is that when the phone is in this state, although the green light is regularly flashing, it is unable to get phone calls even if the caller gets the normal ringing signal. No trace is left of the call, neither in calls list! This is a really serious issue: please, let me know if you have an idea of how to solve the problem.
Thanks!
I am having the same issue. I haven't been able to isolate it. I was havign to0 restart 1-2 times a day. Same systems press the power button nothing. Lights blinking everything looks ok. but nothing on the screen. and i miss calls. really pain in the ass. I loaded mobile secretary and it hasn;t locked in a day or two which is odd.
I also sometimes have to rpess the power button two times for it to wake
me too
It's happening to me too. I will lose service and the phone doesn't go out and poll automatically when service should be good. It may show 1, 2, 3 bars then when I try to make a call it hangs, and then get an x and a Y!, then searches for service. I have the GSM only hack installed and the activesync workaround and it still does this. It is not useable as a phone.
do a search in this forum.

With all due respect, there is no solution where the link leads to.
I am having the GSM problem also. Just from time to time I am noticing an exclamation mark near the 'antennae' icon in the top bar. When I tap it, I read 'Service unavailable' in the balloon. From that point I may either soft-reset, or switch GSM flight mode on and off, which brings the PIN code keyboard and the phone works again.
I really don't think it is related to power saving, as it happened a few times in the car with TyTN on external power.

I think warmkiwi's link may be relevant to jimwormold's original post, which may not be related to your and angled1's problem of failing to poll correctly after dropping it's signal.
Mike
yes, it was. sorry, i should have quoted the original author (jimwormold)
well, sorry for being so picky on you :|
Now when we have defragmented the conversation I wonder if the GSM problem is reported more widely? and what is supposed to do in order to isolate the problem and fix it...?

Sorry to do a "me too" posting, but I experience the exact same symptoms. There is no obvious pattern to when this happens, but it is a major problem, as there is no way (other than trying to switch it on) to distinguish whether the phone is working or not at any given moment.
I am running the latest (South African) ROM on my Vario II.

Given this thread now appears to have two distinct issues running together I better be clear that I am referring to the lock-up/freezing issue not the dropped GSM signal issue!!
To be honest there are quite a few possible causes for the freezing issue(s). I would suggest searches and the wiki on such things as (and you may or may not have tried some already):
1. Use of a Task Manager to properly shut running programmes otherwise they contiue to run in the background
2. Proper shutting down of Active Sync in addition to any task manager you may have, as it can re-start itself automatically (particularly overnight. Look for the "Fake Server Trick")
3. Always shut down Wifi when not in use (vital particularly overnight but also good practice to avoid lock ups)
4 For overnight and possibly other quiet times you can consider having your device automatically perform a soft reset to clear any running programmes that may block alarms/receipt of mail etc. Look for such things as xbar or SK schema

Yes indeed, although I think that both: a Phone App problem, and a GSM signal problem, are indeed the same, maybe only differently percepted and described by users affected.
I need ActiveSync to be running in order for DirectPush to work. If it conflicts with the phone, it makes the device unusable concerning push email functionality.

I agree they may be cause and effect for some folks. Although I don't believe we can say that all the freezing and lock-ups are due to dropped GSM signal and freezing when failing to re-establish it. The items I list either taken together or individually have been found by others to work in some cases.
I appreciate that if you require Active Sync running then this is not a solution for you. I think the issue of crashing on loss of signal requires more analysis and I'm not aware of much discussion of it - though I could be wrong!!

I was fiddling with the phone yesterday and today, and I have a hypothesis that my problem is related to PIN entry screen that won't pop up but is silently awaiting a PIN underneath.
I was trying to ucheck the "Require PIN when phone is used" box in Settings but with no luck, my PIN is then refused with "Unknown SIM Error" message. Maybe it wants a PUK but I don't have it on hand to try.
My plan now is to:
- uninstall all Phone-related applications (PhonePlus, Dark_Blue Buttons, EZDial),
- request PUK from my office and try to uncheck the box,
- try prepaid SIM card which has no PIN
To observe symptoms I need two-three days, so I will rather not be posting until solid data is collected.
ps Mike, it is a pleasure to be on a board with people like you.

I'm on day 2 of my replacement phone from Cingular and the problem with losing gsm signal is non existent. The problem was hardware and fixed by calling and getting a warranty replacement phone. I'll let you know if the problem returns. Oh, and I have not been using the gsm only hack. I'm trying to see if the phone will work as designed first.

Good news - hope it continues to work well.

I am reporting from the test field that my problem persists, despite uninstalling all phone-related extenders.
I have noticed that freezing is paired with disabling Bluetooth. So after switching the phone off (flight mode on) and back on (flight mode off), I also have to turn on Bluetooth.
EDIT: I was grounded for last few days at home and freezing problem was not occuring. I am now thinking that it may be related to switching band between GPRS and UMTS. My next step will be disabling UMTS for good. It saves a whole lotta battery, by the way. I am for the third day mostly on standby, with a few calls made, and I am still on 70%! (no 3G in the area)
I have contacted my vendor and asked about replacement policy, they are "checking this with the importer". It's a beauty of living in not-so-western country. Poland is the name.

I'm having exactly the same problem, very annoying because the staus LEDs keep blinking as normal. I too think the problem is UMST-GPRS switching related, as I also have problems when phoning while I drive with my car from a UMTS enabled into a GPRS only zone. The voice call is interupted and I get a loud noise, sounding like a scrambled voice, on both sides of the connection. At home my UMTS signal is very weak, so I think it happens when I move around the house to a place where the TyTN switches to GPRS.
I've put my TyTN to "GSM network" only now to see if this helps, but I use UMTS frequently so this is no long term solution for me.

[Q] Random Internet Connectivity Issues on 3G

I surely can't be the only one having this issue. It doesn't seem to be related to any particular firmware, as its been an issue ever since I got the phone, and I've since had quite a few different FW on it. Someone I spoke to on another forum with an SGS said theirs did this as well...
Basically, I can be happily surfing away, and then randomly, a page will not load - "Web page could not be loaded" message. Refreshing does not work. At best, turning the APN off or switching to Airplane mode and then back on seems to fix it most of the time. At other times, a full restart of the phone is required.
Most of the time this will happen once or twice in the course of a day, but today it happened on several occasions and it's getting annoying. I had to switch to GSM today for several hours - though that could have been my network provider, but its strange how other Vodafone users in my office were having no issues at the same time I was having issues, even when using the same APN settings.
Any ideas? This is quite a frustrating bug at times.
Unfortunately I can only be here for you , cause this is also happening to me. It is extremely annoying. I did not try the Flight mode switch though, I always had to restart my phone to fix it.
Tried a new rom with updated modem file? Could help
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
stick to only WiFi or only 3G
you will get those hic ups when the phone is changing between WiFi & 3G
it goes to either side depending which one has a stronger signal
it will have preferences for WiFi over 3G
WiFi is not as stable as 3G from personal experience, so i turn off WiFi and use 3G most of the time

My Omnia 7 keeps loosing it's 3G connection

My Omnia 7 keeps loosing it's 3G connection. To restore it I have to restart the phone. T-Mobile say that this happens from time to time, but it's happening every day now. It's annoying as it stops my push email from being up to date, and of course prevents the use of any internet based services until the phone is restarted.
Has anyone else noticed their phone has switching to GSM?
Had mine for 6 days.Been fine up until today, then I had the same problem.Only the once so far.
Confirm loosing 3G
Confirm loosing 3G connection, and also have phone call failures.
Factory reset did not solve the problem.
Bring it back to shop
Blackstone is back now!
At first this was occasional with my phone, then more frequent, and it's all the time. If I want to use the Internet I have to restart the phone. My house is covered by full HSPA, but the only way to get it is to take the battery out while the phone is switched on. I can sometimes get 3G by a simple restart, which I lasts about 40 minutes.
I like the phone, so I'm going to hold out for a software update. All it needs to do is check available networks and I think that, if this is a wide spread issue, Samsung/Microsoft will fix it. Hope so.
Please post here if you have this issue too.
I have also been having this issue... sometimes it doesnt come back straight away when i restart it but after about 10mins its back.
When I activated it with orange I was told to expect a few txt msg's that would need deleting and the phone restarting... I only got 1 msg, maybe this has something to do with it, maybe the phone hasnt been sent enough updates.
I also have this issue and have done for weeks. Orange couldn't solve it either.
It only happens overnight at home. I either need to reset the phone / rescan available networks or turn flight mode off and on again for the connection to restore.
I was thinking it may be an issue with t-mobile since it only happens at my home where orange signal is poor and i roam over to t-mobile.
If i stay in an area with good Orange signal i don't get the problem.
Good to know i'm not the only one with this problem. It's very annoying!
Hi y'all.
I had the same problem: 3G was lost every time. I was fed up restarting the phone every time, so I looked for another way to get 3G back. I found out that disabling and enabling SIM security (phone > setttings) got me 3G again... for a short while.
But: after disabling SIM security permanently, 3G kept on going (in fact for over a week now).
I think that changing the PIN to some other number, might cause this. I haven't yet tried changing it to the default PIN again, to see if using that for SIM security solves it. For the moment I'm too happy it works again.
I have suffered from poor reception issues ever since I got my Omnia 7.
It seems like the reception comes and goes. I will receive e-mails, which proves that the phone has been connected, but as soon as I try to use data myself, by visiting a web page or refreshing an app like facebook, the reception disappears and the "no reception" symbol drops down from the status bar.
Also, often when I try to send an SMS, it will appear to have been sent, yet 10 minutes later I will receive a "Can't send...try again" message. Once I have received this, the SMS will never successfully send. However, in the meantime I can receive SMS messages, which shows that the phone has been getting a signal.
This is SO frustrating and is ruining my experience with the phone.
I have posted requests on the Microsoft Answers forum and the only suggestions have been to reset the phone or turn WiFi off. Neither of these have had any effect. I have never enabled SIM lock.
I have heard that there is a firmware update due soon which includes a new radio stack. I am desperately hoping that this will improve the situation, as at the moment I cannot rely on my Omnia 7 as my only phone.
Alex.
Hi Loco,
You are right in saying that social answers doesn't really help much .
Luckily there IS a new firmware from a couple of days ago! Check out the Omnia 7 Dev section. There are only a few posts.
And here is also a good link for you. You are right to assume that it comes with a new radio stack which improves on performance.

Finally found a thread on this... I have been having a similar problem since I got my phone from Optus here in Australia. I took it back and they replaced it for me but the new phone is exactly the same. I don't lose the 3G icon but anything data related just ceases from loading. Right now I'm trying to refresh the Facebook app and it just comes up with 'Unable to connect', even though I have full 3G reception.
I flashed it to the newer leaked firmware and it hasn't changed anything, problem still persists unfortunately. This is a major problem that isn't getting enough attention! It seems quite widespread and Omnia 7 specific.
Had similar problems, but after I changed my provider ( O2-Germany), 3G is stable.
For the people having this problem, have you tried setting the phone to prefer 3g? Details of how to do this are here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=915813

Same here man. On Optus and my reception sucks with this device. What the hell is samsung doing? FIX IT!
I have been having this problem with my Omnia 7. The frustrating thing is this is a replacement phone I had for an LG which I had replaced THREE TIMES due to random resets. So now I have a phone that I have to turn off and on EVERY MORNING in order for the data connection to start working again. Needless to say I am very frustrated. I am on Orange in the UK. I suspect it could be related to when being an a poor reception area and it tries to switch to tmobile. I am going to try turning roaming off. Please, if anyone finds a solution to this let me know.
Thanks

My problem got worse with the Mango update. I'm now on my 2nd handset after having a replacement from Orange warranty. This one still loses it's connection but much less frequently.
TBH i don't think it will ever get fixed. I started an MS Answers thread months ago and lots of people had the same problem but we never got a response from MS.
Conisdering the age of the model now I doubt Samsung care, well they didn't seem to care a year ago so they won't now... For this reason I will not buy another Samsung phone. It's infuriating.
Looks like I am stuck with it until December then when I can upgrade to a Nokia lumia. A long wait :-(
i have this issue, too.. but for me i only have to set airplane mode on and off. sometimes i deactivate data connection, go to a random website, get the 'no connection' error, then activate data connection back and it works.
however, after installing the latest drivers & firmware, i get this issue A LOT less frequent. like once in 2-3 days.
i hope ms or samsung will fix this because it can get really annoying. especially when you need eg. a quick google-search..
Just flicking the flight mode wouldn't be so bad but that doesn't work for me, I have to restart the phone each time. I love WP7 but this and the other problems with the LG is driving me nuts. Almost wondering whether I should have just followed the crowd and gone for an iPhone.

Same as me - Flicking flight mode on-off doesn't solve it, needs a soft-reset.
Like I say, there are quite a few with Omnias on Orange with this problem.
I'm in the same boat, I've had this for months now so I guess I'll just deal with it until I can upgrade the start of April and get a Lumia (hopefully the EU 900/910 will be here by then!). There is no way on this earth Samsung are getting any more of my money. Nokia seem fully commited so they can take my cash next time!
I have the same problem with the data stopping working on o2 in the UK. But I also sometimes cant receive calls even though the phone has service, then there are the times where it site there going GPRS/3G/3G+/No Service and you cant do anything with it apart from pull the battery.

Phone sometimes disconnects when using WIFI

hi, sometimes when i look at my phone, usually after being on wifi the phone shows no bars.
sometimes it comes back on in a min, i tried airplane mode but it wouldnt work. so i restarted it and worked fine.
not sure why it happens, does anyone else have this? could it be due to some Wifi calling setting? not sure why phone seems to just cut off.
anyone have any idea why this may be happening?
does it turn off radio for wifi calling somehow or? just random.
I have a similar issue, but not equal. Sometimes, when I try to connect to the network I always do (home), it simply doesn't work. Scanning - disconnected - scanning - disconnect. Only a phone reset fixes this.
Sheep ROM 2.0
AbyssNote Kernel 2.5
I had a similar issue a while ago and sent Mine back to the seller but the seller claimed neither they nor Samsung could find a problem with the phone. Thankfully The seller sent me a replacement which no longer gives me this problem so it may be the handset, though it could also be the setting/Conflicting app. Someone reported here his problem Was solved after adjusting a w ifi regulating app
i have a 3-day old gnote and i started noticing this problem after i have my phone rooted. the wifi icon stays on but there's no internet connection. turning the screen off and waking the phone after a minute solves the problem but its annoying to be losing connection when you're needing it. i'm on stock KKA.

Not a user error so need to contact Samsung-don't think is anyway
I have a somewhat similar problem. When I am using wifi for somewhat long time, I am unable to connect back to my 3g. Or if I was on 3g connection and I move out of coverage area for a little more than 10 minutes, I can't reconnect to 3g. Only 3g connection has this problem though, everything else works fine.
If I restart the phone, I can reconnect. Setting to airplane mode and resetting doesn't help. Neither does resetting the mobile network operators.
Yes, the problem seems to be software related since there is no actual problem with receiving 3g/phone.
yesterday i drove back 10 hrs and streamed music/radio the entire way with only a few tiny interruptions in reception.
but often still if i just take my phone out of my pocket, the "phone" part will be off and usually turn back on within 1-2 mins.
but this is quite annoying since sometimes il literally be waiting for 1-2 mins to place a call.
my phone is "not" rooted.

[Q] Dialer / Keypad Lag or Massive Delay when making call?

I have a Canadian Rogers Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N900W8) running the latest software update (as of last night).
Any time I dial someone's number, there is a full 10 to 15 seconds delay/lag before the phone 'reacts' and starts to actually make the call. This lag/delay happens regardless if I am:
using speed dial (though it is especially obvious then)
manually dialling a number
sliding to the right on a person's contact (quick dial)
pressing and holding on a contact's number to dial
I've tried adjusting the Google Sync settings, turning on/off the "Sync People details" as well as my Samsung account's "Sync contacts". I've disabled Facebook/Linked In "Sync Contacts", based on my theory that there was some sort of hiccup being caused by these apps' attempts to pull data on the contact immediately upon me placing the call.
The other issue is that Contact photos/names are also severely delayed when receiving an incoming call, for example when my phone starts ringing, all that I can see is their phone number at the top of the screen (almost as if it's the 'raw' cellular data), and not their name or picture (as normally would immediately appear on say my Galaxy S 3).
I've searched all over but have yet to see this issue pop up. This seems really strange. Any ideas or solutions?? Thanks!
Edit: I tried a second battery pull and hard restart and this seems to have fixed the issue for now. Weird!
If it's any consolation, it's not just your Rogers Note 3. I'm having the same issue with the Note 3 made for T-Mobile USA. I'm going to try the battery pull like you suggested and see if that resolves the issue, as well as some alternate dialers. I'll post my luck once I've tried this.

I have found this problem (delay dialing) for 2 weeks.
When I connect to internet, by wifi or mobile data, it is corrected. But whenever the internet connection is disconnected , it apears.
I'm disappointed from Note 3 because of lots of bugs that has got especially after update to kitkat
-delay dialing
-not working any auto call recording app.
-not working properly it's sensors.
And etc
Same bug here. 4.2.1. Phone was fine, never used to do it. randomly started doing this around the same time as I started getting multiple duplicate sms messages. Dialing delay goes away when wifi is on.
Very annoying. I'm open to suggestions!

At least 150MB of phone memory should be free..
Else, it'll lag..
I removed a few apps and now am having 200MB of free space on my Phone Memory (internal), and there are no lags..
Phone is running smooth..

Thanks for your reply! I have 1.1gb RAM free pretty much all the time, 1.18GB ROM free, and 20.99GB internal SD free.
Not sure this is the problem.
I got the same problem and i realized after i read this post that it doesnt happen if im connected with wifi. There should be a way to fix this, its a 500euro phone there shouldnt be such problems...
Had the same problem with a Samsung Relay, after a few updates. Had a chat with Samsung, after a hard cache clearing left me with the option to factory reset. Which I'm not very interested in. Uninstalled a lot of applications, then by chance connected to the wifi and sent an email. After that, it seems to be working now.
Didn't fix the problem for more than a few hours. Actually I believe hooking on wi-fi did it, because I connecting again this morning solved the problem again.
I installed a firewall and denied permission for all apps, let's see if this works...
No, the firewall doesn't work.
After connecting on wireless it works for about 3-4 hours. Then again bull**** happens. Don't know why, but this relation is interesting. There is no actual traffic sent form the device, since the firewall blocks a lot of the system bull**** apps from communicating, but after enabling it it works.
I see that enabling wireless even for a short while (3sec) is enough to get it back on track. Why might this be so?...
Prey
Factory reset, reinstall everything, then encryption. 4 hours. Tested during the procedure to see if it dials fast. It dialed, until the end, when it started to have the same problem again.
Then I got the wonderful idea from above to check if there is something wrong with Prey. A software to block your phone if it's stolen. And guess what, as long as it's not connected to the Internet, it hangs and won't open. Maybe this was creating the problem? Don't know, but for now I uninstalled it and it seems to be working. I remember it did an update before the problem occurred, maybe the update is the problem? Will write again if the problems persists.

Seems I'm having the same issue on two of my Prey-enabled devices (HTC One X+ and HTC One X) after upgrading to latest version. Happens with Data-off.
