Removing Stock App Icons

I've removed a bunch of the crap apps that come pre-installed on the Galaxy, however the stupid icons still show up in my app menu. Anyone know how to get rid of these icons??

You can make a custom app draw and place the apps in the order you want. Not sure if you can fully remove an icon but you could create another page and place them all on that.
Edit: How did you remove the stock junk? I've looked in the Setting > apps menu but uninstall was grayed out.

you need to r00t it then use adb shell goto data>app> then use the rm -r command to remove anything u don't want....
I don't know how to create a custom app drawer, can you elaborate?
There has to be a better solution than that btw, anyone else?

open app draw > menu > view type > customizable grid > puts you back at app draw.
Menu > edit > move app icons at will and create multiple pages, pages can have as many for as few icons as you chose.

You need to be root.

1. Grab ADB from the SDK from Google and put the tools dir somewhere easy to access via command line
2. Install the USB drivers (I had to install 3 drivers)
3. Root the phone
4. CMD to wherever you put the tools directory
5. Run "adb remount"
6. Run "adb shell"
7. (inside of the shell) "su" to root (only if you get a $ prompt, if you have a # prompt skip this step)
8. "cd /system/app"
9. Delete the above apk's
Do not enter any quotes above, only enter the command inside of the quotes.
Any suggestions on any other apk's to delete?

Simply reboot! That's all I did after I removed a bunch of apk and none of the icons show up anymore

I removed them and now it tells me that my camera doesn't work.

just wanted to post an alt method for those that dont like adb (we're out here, i have yet to install the drivers for this phone lol
Alt Method
1. If you’re rooted, purchase Root Manager (a must have tool for rooted androids)
2. Open Root Manager
3. Select System apps
4. Select App Remover
5. Seleck .apk files you don’t want and remove them.
6. Reboot the phone immediately after
7. Now go to menu
8. settings
9. manage applications
10. you will see apps that have their long name/path name “com.xxxx.xxxx.xxxx” and no icons
11. those are the remnants of the apk files you used to have which were locked (hence needing Root Manager)
12. uninstall these like you would any other non OEM/3rd Party app
13. You should be done!

i've removed telenav, mobitv, amazon mp3, and slacker radio so far
Let me know if this works for you guys or if i've missed anything (i am here to learn from this great community as well)
P.S. I had a hard time with Slacker Radio because i deleted the .apk as mentioned above but still had app in the app drawer and it still launched when i selected the icon. Turns out, I had updated it with AppBrain. When i went to uninstall Slacker through manage applications, it removed the update first then gave me a "uninstall unsuccessful". However when i went back to the list of apps, it did remove the icon and revert to "com.slacker.radio" in the apps list, then i went in to uninstall that and it worked fine. So, if any apps have updates on top of "factory", keep that in mind

I have noticed that the slacker radio and layar from samsung/TMO are quite gimped and don't really function very well. They seem to be tied to TMO and wants to charge your TMO account monthly for something. (I didn't really look close, I got to the "we want to charge your account" part and canceled.) I deleted them from the phone and then went to the market and downloaded the "real" apps... Yeah, there is none of that crap on the real apps.

Most of the other TMO/Samsung apps did this as well, but I deleted most of them pronto. So if you want to use layar or slacker radio... Do yourself a favor and delete them, and grab them from the market.
I actually use Amazon MP3, so I kept that one.
When, oh when do the CMs a come!? Get along little doggy. Yehaw. *Bullwhip* (Yay, we got Cyanogen!)

I'm just uninstalling them with Titanium Backup (root needed). Things that I think I MAY want back, I just back up... I found that some after uninstalling, you can see in Settings->Applications->Manage, right under 3rd party at 0 bytes. I just uninstalled from there and it appears it removed all traces.
Note: Titanium Backup is acting flaky with restores, apps go back but it FC's before restoring data. Then I have to go back and restore data only. I felt better just reinstalling from market then restoring data only from TB. But that is another thread

couple of noob questions for you, that addtohome thing, if you uninstall that, what happens when you long press on an empty space on a home screen? launching addtohome brings up the same menu as a long press so i was wondering. Also what are the .odex files and what do they do?

long press on home screen brings up.... add to home menu
I believe removing that apk just removes the icon in the app draw, Similar to the Avatar APK which is also just an icon with a link... Not too sure about odex but read they should be removed also. When I "removed" items it was more move to a backup folder on the SD card just incase.

Jeez, I found another one. The kindle app (which I use) was not uninstallable. It had a "remove updates" button instead. I click on remove updates, and it basically uninstalled the app, but left all of the shortcuts on the home screen and the app menu orphaned.
I had to install it from the market, uninstall it from the market, and install it from the market again to get it working correctly. Now I have a proper "uninstall" button and market updates for this app.
It seems to me like every T-mobile/Samsung pre-installed app has something wrong with it. I can't wait until we get a real rom for this phone.

vvm-signed.apk - T-Mobile's Visual Voice Mail (If you use this, I recommend deleting this version and installing from the market instead.)
All of the stubs are basically shortcuts to the market to install the real apps. That one is the stub to install the T-Mobile "My Account" app. I removed all of the stubs. They just get in the way IMO.

The addtohome apk just puts a shortcut in the app tray to bring up the same menu as when you long press the background. I found it annoying, so I removed it. Removing it does not effect the menu that pops up when you long press an empty space on the home screen.
As I understand it, Odex files are there to speed up boot and to lessen the dalvik-cache usage a bit.

Please help me, i Lost my "Accounts &sync"

I was using Titanium Backup to uninstall some of the apps that came with my Vibrant. I made sure to hit the back up button in Titanium Backup before I un-installed "Accounts & Sync" (I wanted to uninstall it because the icon in the app draw was annoying to me). So i deleted it and now I cant access my account and Titanium Backup wont let me restore. I was wondering if someone could please help me. Thank you..

The app was only a shortcut to Accounts & Sync.. just go into settings -> Accounts & Sync.

Thats my problem, It isnt there in the setting app..

Thats weird because I uninstalled it and it was still there even after i rebooted the phone.
You could always use ADB and push the .apk back into /system/app

How do I do that? And where can I find the .apk ?

Mhmmm thought you backed it up? do you have a ADB environment set up properly? It'll take a little bit of time to fully set that up.

Once that's done and the SDK environment is fully setup by Droid Explorer. Make sure it downloads SDK files and such.
1. Settings -> Applications -> Developement.. make sure that USB debugging is enabled
2. Connect phone via USB

It'll take some time to set this all up and when you finally do just put AccountAndSync.apk and AccountAndSync.odex to /system/app and it everything should be good again.

^^ for this to work place the two files in the .zip that i made into the root of /sdcard/ (14GB not the 2GB)
After looking around.. you could possibly get a app called Root Explorer (paid app) and have the same result.
* In Root Explorer, copy the apk file you want to put in /system/app
* Navigate to the /system/app directory
* Tap the Mount R/W button on the top right
* Tap Paste
* Scroll down to the pasted apk, long press on it and select Permissions (you'll see 9 check boxes when you do this)
* Check the Read and Write buttons for User, and only the Read boxes next to Group and Others, then tap OK (once you're done, the read/write permissions under the app name should be the same as all the other apps listed (rw-r--r--))
* Reboot.

I tired using Droid Explorer but that didnt work, so then I went and bought "root explorer" and did everything as you said but it didnt work.. I dont know if this makes a difference but when I went into the properties for accountsandsync it said Owner: System
Group is sdcard_rw
While everything else in the /system/app folder says
Owner: Root
Group: Root.

I am in the exact same place. I used Titanium Backup to remove Account & Sync and now it is missing completely. I did do a backup from within Titanium Backup, but when I went to use the Restore feature, it wasn't available. I found a support page for Titanium Backup (http://matrixrewriter.com/android) and FAQ #10 states:
#10: Why is the "Restore" button disabled for some system apps ?
◦System apps are part of your ROM, so Titanium Backup will only backup their data (not the apps themselves). For this reason, if you backup a system app, and then switch to a ROM where that app is missing, Titanium Backup obviously cannot restore the data for it.
I just wish it would have made this more clear when I was doing the backup in the app.

At first, after removing Accounts & Sync using Titanium Backup, the option was still available from Settings -> Accounts & Sync. However, when I actually tried to go into it, it failed to start and it was somehow removed completely from the menu.
I have followed your steps for setting up Droid Explorer. I can get it to communicate with the phone, although it does show a '$' instead of a '#' when typing "adb shell" into the Command Prompt. I have copied the .apk and .odex files from the Zip you provided into the root of the device.
When I attempted to use the adb commands you listed, I get errors for all of them. For "adb remount" it says "remount failed: No such file or directory." For both "adb shell cp /sdcard/AccountAndSync.apk /system/app" and "adb shell cp /sdcard/AccountAndSync.odex /system/app" it says "cp: not found."
I then moved on to trying the Root Explorer app directly from the phone. I found the .apk and .odex files in the root of the /sdcard folder. I tried to copy and paste them into the the /system/app folder, but they never appear to paste correctly. It does not give me an error, but it never shows up in the correct spot, either. One thing is that you said I must press Mount R/W, however the system/app folder already says it's opened in R/W. The only option on the top right is Mount R/O, but pressing it doesn't appear to do anything.
I'm not sure what to do from here. Any help would be appreciated.

Okay, I figured out what happened. Titanium Backup shows two "Accounts and Sync" apps... one is the actual app and the other is the icon that links to the app. I had removed both accidentally. I downloaded the AccountAndSync.apk someone posted in another thread and installed it with ADB. It brought the icon back, but not the actual application. Could someone please upload the .apk for the actual Accounts and Sync app?

Thank yogi for reminding that there are two apps for accounts and settings. Been busy and didn't look now in depth and the other night I was pretty tired. Only the settings need to be installed. But I included both for the hell of it.

Android Commander.

I just want to give props to a program for windows called Android Commander. I am not sure if its been mentioned on the Vibrant forum yet, but it got me out of a major jam today.
Android Commander is basically ADB with an easy to use interface. It lets you pull and push files to and from your pc to your Android device.
Story:
I tried to MM the Androdena theme but it seems the framework was corrupted and caused me to keep me in a forceclose loop not letting mount or boot or really do anything. I did make a nandroid backup but some how deleted the CW update zip from my sd at an earlier date and could only boot up into the stock recovery. I was ok with having to reflash the stock rom using Odin, but needed some important pictures that I took for work. Needless to say I starting freaking out. I have ADB set up but only know a few basic commands and I'm sure what I needed to be done could have been done from there. I started searching for solutions on Google and found this awesome program.
I was first able to move the picture folder from my sd card to my pc, then move and rename the CW update.zip to root of the sd card in turn letting me boot into CW recovery and restoring my nandroid.
The only thing I needed to do was to make sure my device was online through ADB and Android Commander was able to find the device and show me all my files and such. Its a great program, and I highly recommend it if you are not familiar with ADB.

I will need to check this out when I get home. I want an easy way to remove the bloatware on my phone.

it seems like an interesting program, and would be good, but for me it doesn't show that i have root. it tells me "root no" and when i use the console in it and use the su command it tells me no. but still a good program over all, i did some looking around and i believe it will only show you have root access if you have an APP2SD installed. i might be wrong with that, but atleast if anyone else has the same trouble with it please let me know if you figure a work around.
ps, you can view root files and folders just not push or pull anything from them.

Yep, I am seeing the same thing.
I did some research on Google and this is what I came up with:
"adb remount and adb root are protected commands and need either a rooted kernel or a flashed recovery model to run" - Source: Rastaman-FB

ah I see. That's good to know. I guess ill be sticking with just the normal ADB. But I think the program will still be very useful for other stuff considering we don't have to mount the USB so no rescan media after the unmount. That alone is a keeper for me. Thanks again for the information pal.

Stupid question. I accidently deleted my update.zip file and I attempted to reflash another rom. Of course now I'm stuck at the Vibrant Logo and tried to use this app. It says its trying to connect, but never does. I have SDK installed, but I think its the version from when I was tinkering with the G1.
I got into Download mode with the BIG yellow triangle, but my PC never seems to show anything connected via USB unless I try connecting via Recovery.
This app sounded like something would help me since I'm not very good at ADB, but I guess I'm having issues getting over the first hurtle is seems. LOL

I'd say it's ok at best. I don't know of any other ADB GUI tools but this one doesn't work well with my Vibrant.

I'm going to have to agree with this. Is nice to have but doesn't play nice with the vibrant.

It sometimes is very slow in reading internal sd memory on samsung vibrant and it loads up as a blank screen. Disconnecting usb cable and refreshing does the trick for me.

(GUIDE) Aria Superthread

Install Drivers:
Download required files HERE
1: Plug in Aria with supplied data cable to install standard drivers
2: Install HTC Sync (we only need this to get appropriate .adb drivers)
3: Install H Boot Driver - Detailed Guide HERE
a: Power down Aria
b: Hold Volume Down button and press Power (this brings you to bootloader)
c: Wait for SD Card diagnostic (about twenty seconds)
d: Plug in Data cable - at this point Windows will say driver didnt install properly
e: Navigate to Device Manager and update driver for Android 1.0
f: Select "Browse Computer for Driver" and open "Android USB Driver" folder and click next
You now have all the Necessary drivers for your new Android!!
Rooting Your Phone
Credit goes to all the great devs at XDA Developers, including Attn1 and shad0wf0x for their great work
With all the Drivers installed you can now Root the phone!!
1: Go into Menu/Settings/Applications/Development and check the box for "USB Debugging"
2: Plug in phone and choose Charge Only, check box for "Dont ask again" and DONE

(as per unrEVOked instructions uninstall any s/w that communicates with the phone(ie: HTC Sync, Doubletwist, etc.)

Un-Rooting(Restore to factory)

3: Run Aria Shipping ROM.exe as Administrator

Install Custom ROM's
Once youre Rooted you can install custom ROM's from Clockwork Recovery;
1: Copy a custom ROM to the SD card
2: Power down phone
3: Hold Volume down key and press Power to enter bootloader mode
4: After diagnostics run, choose "Recovery" from the list and press power button to select it
5: In Recovery menu choose "install zip from SD card"
6: now select "Choose zip from SD card"
7: navigate to the custom ROM and install
**NOTE: Before flashing a custom ROM it is highly recommended you Wipe Data/Factory Reset in Recovery first
it is also good practice to make a Nandroid backup before flashing any custom ROM
Install Custom Font

**ALWAYS make a Nandroid Backup before attempting any Mods
-Things you will need:
-True Type Fonts(both Normal and Bold .ttf)
-ADB Tool and knowlege of use
-Required Drivers for proper communication between PC and Android
1: Copy both fonts (normal and bold) into folder named Androidfonts
2: Rename fonts to DroidSans and DroidSans-Bold
3: With the phone off Enter Recovery mode by holding Volume Down key and press Power, select Recovery from the list
4: Once in Clockwork Recovery choose "Partitions" and select "mount system"
5: Connect Phone using Data Cable and run ADB Tools in CMD (c:\Android\Tools)
6: now in CMD window enter the following command:
adb push c:\androidfonts\DroidSans.ttf /system/fonts/DroidSans.ttf ENTER
adb push c:\androidfonts\DroidSans-Bold.ttf /system/fonts/DroidSans-Bold.ttf ENTER
7: Now exit CMD, unmount phone in Partitions menu, Go Back, Reboot Phone, Disconnect USB cable
Enjoy your new font!!
NOTE: Respectively you can backup your current fonts by entering the following in ADB:
adb pull /system/fonts/DroidSans.ttf c:\androidfonts\backup

1: Un-RAR Android folder to root directory on PC (ie: C:\ )
2: Open CMD Prompt and type CD\ and hit Enter
3: Now type cd\android\tools Enter
4: Plug in Data cable and choose "Charge Only" on phone (always choose this)
5: Now in CMD prompt enter this command: adb install barcodescanner3.4.apk and press Enter
The SDK tool should install the Barcode Scanner app on the phone. Yay!! Success!!
**You can use this method to install .apk downloads onto the phone. For this demo i had already inserted
the Barcode Scanner app into SDK tools folder. the actual command should read as follows:
adb install c:\path to .apk file (ie: adb install c:\apps\filename.apk)
**I chose this app because you can use it to install other apps by scanning the barcode
found on many HTC App sites.
How to apply ringtones over 300kb limit:
Short story first
I wanted a nice free app to manage files, so i installed Astro File Manager using Barcode app from above.
While moving some files around i discovered the option to set mp3's to ringtone... and it worked!!
This is good because i was not happy to see there was a 300kb limit to ringtones. There may be another
or better way, but this is how i did it
1: Go to Astro app website HERE
2: Scan the Barcode with Barcode scanner app to install Astro Direct link HERE
3: Open Astro, navigate to SD Card\Mobile\Music
4: find the music file you want set to ringtone, Hold on it until menu pops up
5: Select "Music Options", select "Apply as Ringtone"
or if you dont wanna go through all that hassle, install Rings Extended App. Direct Download HERE
How to remove unwanted Stock Apps using SDK:
1: Once your phone has been rooted with Clockwork, boot into Recovery(hold volume down/press power)
2: Open CMD prompt, get to the "android\tools" directory
3: In recovery window highlight "Mount System"
4: Plug in data cable, in CMD type adb remount
5: Now enter adb shell
*you can view the list of apps stored in the phone by entering ls
6: To remove an app enter the following: rm whateverapp.apk, then enter rm whateverapp.odex
(example: rm HtcFacebook.apk ENTER then rm HtcFacebook.odex ENTER)
7: Type ls again to confirn they have been removed, reboot phone.
*NOTE: you may get 0.0dip listed in Widgets menu. simply go into Manage Apps and locate HTC Sense. Open it and "clear data". your display settings will be reset to factory, but it gets rid of the false data.

Sorry, there has not been any procedure documented for rooting the Gratia with hboot 1.00. If you search this forum you will find some posts and references for things to try, but nothing concrete has been published yet.

CMD = command
CMD is the command you type into run (Start - Run) to open a command prompt.

If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, this is the black command window that allows you to enter commands such as "COPY", "DIR", "XCOPY", etc.

tested it out on my Aria first, everything worked perfectly.

You might want to add to the Font section that you can change your LockScreen font using exactly the same method, but the font for the LockScreen is named Clockopia.ttf -- I'm sure anyone who changes their fonts will want that one changed too.
Also, on the pull command to back up your fonts, you need to add a \ after backup. I did it your way and it wrote the fonts into a file called backup. Then each time I entered it again to back up another font, it overwrote the previous one. Maybe the pull commands should also be moved up into the actual instructions instead of a footnote too, in case someone doesn't read all the way through before starting the process. It will be too late if they have already followed the instructions in their current form.
These are just suggestions, not criticism. Love the thread, thanks a lot for creating and updating it!

Thank you so much for this thread. It made rooting my Aria and putting on the latest liberated froyo ROM super easy. I was a root/custom rom virgin before yesterday!

I'd also add a rom list so people can stay updated.

[Q] Crash after root and renaming framworks-res.apk

So, I wanted to delete my google account in the first place. I found this tutorial with video. It says:
Basically this was done on a rooted phone. We used the program called Root Explorer and navigated to /system/framework. Make sure that is mounted r/w and not r/o (read write vs read only). Rename framework-res.apk > framework-res.apk.bak. You might get an error after this (force close). Just go ahead and force close it. Immediately rename it back to framework-res.apk. Reboot and you're done. Enter your new main Google account.

I rooted the phone using the Galaxy S II Root Guide on this forum. I put the XWKDD_insecure.tar on my phone, succesfully. After reboot i rooted the the phone using SuperOneClick. Everything went fine, it asked me if i wanted BusyBox > clicked 'Yes'.
I rebooted my phone, left it in USB Debugging (you never know what happens). I launched the application Root Explorer (v2.14.2) > some message asked me if i allowed the app acces to my root > clicked yes.
So, Root Explorer launched, i navigated to /system/framework and clicked "mount R/W" (read/write). I renamed framework-res.apk to framework-res.apk.bak. TROUBLE STARTS HERE
All kind of processes started to crash and asked me to do forced close the tutorial says this can happen, so i force closed. But the errors kept popping up, and i kept clicking force close. In the end there were 3(i guess) processes which continiously kept crashing one-after-another.
The proces system crashed also, so the creen was black. I was able to slide the top bar (system tray?), the icon of my advanced task killer was there so I tried to launch that but it crashed too. So I gave up, and long pressed the powerbutton.
Big trouble
I tried to reboot, the samsung galaxy s II launch image appeared. That's it.. nothing left. After a lovely cursing-session i put on the KE2 original kernel. (again, just like the root guide says) Rebooted but it's still stuck at the launch image.
Kernel version:
2.6.35.7-I910XWKE2-CL187606

Just go into download mode and flash again with whatever rom you want (FULL ROM not just kernel). Should be fine I would think as /system is not essential (well, for to use it as a phone/pda yes) but not for flashing again. Should be fine then.

Although i'm new to the flashing stuff, i understand what you mean. I'm going to find a full rom and download it to my phone, and be back asap

I too did rename framework-res.apk and bricked my Kindle fire; need help
I too did the same dumb thing.
I already rooted my kindle fire, downloaded android market I loggedin using a google account. After that I was unable to change the google account. Browsed web and I saw the post of the video. I followed the instructions in the video.
steps followed: using root explorer, went to /system/framework and renamed framework-res.apk and and after I completed the renaming, the device crashed (or I clicked something; hence crashed?) and stuck in blank carrousel page.
So, I rebooted and all I get now if boot logo of 'Kindle fire'. It doesnt go any forward.
I connected to PC and I am able to see the device in ADB. But no root access in shell. So, any adb command I give I get back errors like: no permission; read-only folder, etc.
When I use the Kindle fire utility v0.9.3 and try to do temp root or root, I get
Error type 2 android.util.AndroidException: Can't connect to activity manager; is the system running?
adbd cannot run as root in production builds
PC detects the device as 'Android Composite ADB interface'. But cant do anything in adb. I can push files to /data/local/tmp folder. Thats about it.
when I do
adb shell mv /system/framework/framework-res.apk.bak /system/framework/framework-res.apk
I get:
failed on '/system/framework/framework-res.apk.bak' - Read-only file system
Can someone help rename this file back to original framework-res.apk?
