Dell streak faq's - Streak 5 General

DELL STREAK FAQ;S
What Android build is currently on the Phone?
The streak has been released with Android 1.6.
When will Android 2.2 be available?
Different sources have said that an OTA (over the air) upgrade will be ready in September.
Can I load custom Roms onto my streak?
Yes, See this link. LINK
Can I root my streak?
Yes, Yes see this link LINK
Can i use an ipod cable with the phone?
No, the ipod cable is very different despite its similar appearances. Although some people have reported that the ipod cable fits, it can cause damage to the connector on the phone. It is rumoured that the Streak uses a PDMI connection, currently people are looking at testing other cables.
How do I rename a folder?
Press and hold the folder until it turns red. Press the Menu button then select Rename Folder. (Thanks Grizlore)
How do I delete a folder or widget?
Press and hold the folder icon or widget until it turns red. Press the Menu button then select Remove from Home or Uninstall. (Thanks Metoo)
Why is my touchscreen unresponsive?
You may need to calibrate it.
If you have not install Koush's recovery then you start the device from a cold boot holding down the camera button.
If you have installed Koush's recovery then you do the same but hold down BOTH of the volume control buttons. (Thanks Popetodd)
How can I sync my itunes library with my streak?
Doubletwist or iSyncr Lite seem to work for people.
Does the streak support Multi-touch?
Yes and no. Yes the streak does as can be seen from the browser; however, Android 2.x is required for other programs to use multi-touch.
Why does the dell keyboard not auto-correct?
You need to enable word suggestions. To enable this, go to settings, locale & text, android keyboard settings, make sure show suggestions & quick fixes are both enabled.
How come multiple key presses are not recognised in games or emulators?
Multi-touch is required and will be coming with the 2.2 update.
My streaks battery cover is loose...
Press hard on the sucker and it will go on nice and tight.
My battery drains really quickly, even when I'm not using it.
Make sure you don't have apps open in the background that constantly use data. I found fring and sometimes dolphin browser will use data in the background and significantly reduce battery life. Look at what you have installed recently and uninstall things until your problem is fixed, then reinstall stuff and try to determine what it was.
Can I unlock my streak?
Not yet.
Can I change the orientation of the home screen to portrait?
No. BUT you can use a different launched like ADW launcher in the market.
Why does the streak have a 30FPS frame rate limit?
We think its because of the HDMI out, hopefully Dell or some intrepid hackers will resolve this...
Can I use my streak as a wireless hub, or to tether?
If your streak is rooted, most programs in the market seem to work fine. Barnacle works very well for a wifi hub and easytether works well for just plain ole tethering.
Can I make video calls on my streak using the front facing camera?
Yep, Fring works well.
I hate the stock email client, what are some good replacements?
Maildroid works very well, as does k-9 mail.
Can I change the time it takes for the Streak to divert calls to my Voice mail
Yes dial this from your phone dialler
**61*901*11*??#
Replace ?? with the number of seconds required
e.g. **61*901*11*30#
Will make the Streak ring for 30seconds before it goes to Voice mail, increments can be set at 5secs intervals
How To Delete Search History In the App Market ?
Use a Tool Like History Eraser it Free in th Market Look HERE
The list of FAQ'S is a working progress and please PM me if you have any changes and thanks to COURTLANDRE over at MODACO for compiling this

Questions From ex-Treo650 user

Ok I had gotten board with the lack of wifi and decent web browser on the Treo 650 that I decided to make the move to the 8125. I knew about the speed difference and some of the other issues discussed in these forums because I researched the device for months before making the move. Therefore I wont say much about that. Unfortunately I have a few issues that I can't seem to find answers for in this forum and I was hoping other users out there could help.
1. Is there any way of making the navigation pad useful? I cant access anything on the taskbar and it would be great if I could. I installed magic button so I can close apps and switch back to home when I want. Furthermore there is almost no documentation on how to use the nav pad. All application instructions say tap the icon. It's very convenient to have one handed use. for example i have yet to figure out how to get back to the location bar in Pocket IE so I can enter a url without having to tap the screen.
2. Is it common that some applications just freak out when you switch to landscape mode (scroll bars not working and such)?
3. As mentioned I installed magic button but is there an application that will pop up a list of running tasks so I can switch between them easily with the navigation pad.
4. Backup. I may be very wrong on this but I fear that active sync does not actually backup my entire device like palm does. Could someone clear this up and if I'm correct is there a way for active sync to do this. I have more programs on this device than what is on my add/remove prog screen.
5. Notification reminders. I see a feature to have the led for a period of time but it would be nicer if it could be set to play its sound also. Like the pagers of old.
6. Notification of lost service. This phone never tells me I have no cell service. Last thing I want is battery draining searching or worse assuming I have service and miss all calls.
If anyone could provide some info on the above it would be a great help. i have already found many other programs that make up for the lacking features. Below is a list of what I have installed please make any suggestions you think would be helpful.
1. AnthaVPN - easiest and fastest to install
2. TN520 by mochasoft
3. Pocket Putty SSH client
4. Eyes On Call - Callfilter like program with many features still limited but the developer is very quick in implementing suggestions.
5. Info sharp - same developer as above but this provides sms capabilities that are very impressive. He almost has chat style sms with the way this program works.
6. OMAPclocker - for clocking to 220. I actually see the difference.
7. IM+ - Sametime/AOL instant messenger client.
8. Info apps I have Metro, Ereader, Bdicty, VadeMecum
9. TCPMP
10. Registry Wizard
11. Calc98 - the built in calc app is a joke.
12. Xpressmail - dont care what anyone says this app does what it says it will do. Pushes email to your phone.
Thank You
- Richard

[Q] Initial issues from a WP7 newbie...

Hi everyone... I'm having some initial problems with my new Optimus 7 device and maybe someone more experienced can help me...
1) After 1min of inactivity, my screen goes totally black... and I cannot seem to unlock it! The only way I found is by holding the camera button, which opens the camera app and then the phone is unlocked... but for sure there is a simpler method! When I try to unlock right after it has locked I can do it by "scrolling up", but after it has gone totally black, it does not work anymore... Is this a bug or am I just stupid?
2) I would like to know the MAC address of my phone... I saw a tutorial for the Samsung Omnia 7 using the MFG app, but the MFG app in LG is different, and I cannot find the MAC there... is there a way to discover the MAC of this device?
I'm sure many more questions will come, but that's it for now...
Many thanks!
Leo.
Alright, it is totally understandable that you may have these issues. First of all, in order to take the phone out of standby, you need to press the 'Power' button at the top right of the phone. It may seem too small at first, but you'll get used to it. When you press the button, the screen lights up and you can scroll up to unlock. As you may have discovered, the 'Camera' button also unlocks the device, but that is a feature to quickly take a photo, not to unlock it.
Secondly, have you installed the MFG app on the LG Optimus 7 yet? If not, bring up the dialer, and dial ##634#, wait for the app to install, and then it will be available like any other app in your 'right flick' list. You can even pin it up to the Home screen if you choose to. Then, enter 277634#*# for the password to enter the app. The following is the path you must take:
7. Engineer Menu > 2. Device Test > 8. WIFI Test > 1. Net.Info.
At which point you should be greeted by the Net.Info. screen showing you the MAC address and the IP address of your device.
Hope this helps. Ask any other questions you have here as well. Welcome to the WP7 Club.

Thanks very much! I was going crazy with this lock screen problem... I think they should state this flow more clearly somewhere... anyway, thanks also for the MAC info, I got it also!
For now that's everything! But I'm sure there will be more in the future...
OK, one more small thing that is bothering me...
Does IE (on WP7 of course) has any means to store passwords and auto-complete them? I even looked for some apps, but they didn't seem to integrate with IE...

As of now, IE does not support any plug-ins, ActiveX (thank God), or any of the regular functions you are used to on a desktop browser. However, I believe autocomplete will come soon. For now though, you should upgrade to NoDo, and use a password manager (I use 7Pass, and Passkeeper), and copy username/passwords from there to your browser...

OK, I was afraid of that... unfortunately this didn't come with NoDo (I already have it
It will be a long wait until the next update (Mango, if I remember the name correctly)... it would be very nice if MS would release smaller updates like this more often... this way maybe they could even deploy it faster, since the changes would be small and so would the probability of a grand failure (I guess)
Anyway, one more question came up yesterday: is there any way to show my contacts birthdays on the calendar? I had this same problem on my Nokia... I never understood the reason to have a birthday field on the contacts if they didn't show up on the calendar!
Thanks!
Leo.

Xoom Tips, tricks and just helpful information.

Figured I would consolidate the info into a single thread. I will add to it as new things are discovered.
APP BEHAVIOR / USAGE
Q: My Xoom is showing web pages in mobile format, is there a way to show the full page instead?
A: Yes, type About:debug in the browser's address bar, then under settings go to UAString and select desktop. This will not stay however, but hopefully someone can figure out how to make it stick. It stays in desktop mode on my droid X unless i change it. Some suggest using the Dolphin HD browser as an alternative.
EDIT: Android team has given me some more technical details about what's happening here: In Honeycomb, the browser's default user agent string is "Android"; in previous versions of the OS, it's "Android Mobile." This is meant to serve as a way for Web sites to differentiate between large-screen and small-screen Android devices and then respond appropriately. Thus far, however, most Web developers haven't implemented support for the two strings, which is why both are currently being treated the same.
If you have a site that is still loading into mobile format, then post it in this thread, and everyone should contact that site to tell them to fix it. If we all contact them, then they will fix it quicker.
Q: How do I kill an application in Honeycomb?
A: There is really no need to use a task killer application in Android, but if you need to force stop an app for any reason (just like in the phone version) go to Settings->applications->manage applications and then find the app then hit force stop.
Q: My gallery wont update unless I add something new using the camera, is there any way to remedy this?
A: ZBoater had same issue. He installed SDRescan from Market and says it works great.
SYSTEM / TABLET BEHAVIOR
Q: The Wifi on the Xoom will not connect to wireless a or n, does it have the ability to connect to the 5GHz band?
A: Yes, and here is a post from Motorola that might help some of you:
julienB
- Xoom supports 5GHz A & N.
- It is true that it can not go to 300Mbps rate. I am not aware of any mobile device that can reach this rate. Please let me know if you know one, that would be interesting data.
72Mbps is in the expected range for best N rate.
What may explain why Xoom would not see your 5GHz A or N network (or only use low rate)?
- In WiFi Advanced settings, frequency band setting should be "Auto" or "5GHz only"
- Your router should broadcast its SSID. (If another device that was never connected to your router can see it, it means this is ok)
- Xoom supports only the main channels in 5GHz band: channels are 36 40 44 48 149 153 157 161. Can you try to set your router to one of those channels?
- There has been new requirements from WiFi Alliance: we can not support WEP and WPA-PSK in N-mode.
This means that if your router is set in N-only mode (does not support A mode), you should set its security to open or WPA2-PSK. If your router is set in A & N mixed mode and WEP or WPA-PSK, Xoom will not use N rates and max rate will be 54Mbps.
Please let us know if any of the above helps or not.

You can read the whole thread on the Motorola support forums There are some great resolutions on the page if you are having connectivity issues. The Motorola Reps have been actively helping people through the process.
Q: Am I really only able to see the last 5 apps running?
A: Brotip, turn to portrait, and you should see more. Hopefully they will scroll soon.
Q: OMG my micro SD card isn't working!!! HELP!!11
A: relax, Google is working hard to get this implemented into the Xoom. We have no firm date as of right now, but rest assured I will update you as quickly as I hear the news. I love being an early adopter! Get to watch Honeycomb grow up... How I remember when it was just a G1, now look at him!
Q: How do I stop Honeycomb from automatically creating shortcuts on my homescreen when I download apps from the market?
A: Go to the market app. Then My Apps. Then the top right corner settings menu. Credit: Stinkyjoe
Q: How many points of multi-touch does the Xoom have?
A: According to the Multi-Touch Tester app, there are 10 multi-touch points. Ixobelle has a video posted here of it working. According to the multi-touch visualized app, there are 8 multi-touch points. Someone needs to use their nose, or have a friend help them out using the Multi-Touch Tester app, because there could be 10+ I have no friends...
Q: Can I do wifi tether?
A: Yes, it is built in to Honeycomb, and you do not need root. Also, if you want, you can tether it via bluetooth. There is a topic on it posted here by ixobelle
Q: Why is the charging LED not working when I charge the tablet?
A: It only comes on when the Xoom is powered off and you are charging it.
Q: The LED notification light doesn't turn on when I get a notification.
A: The notification LED is on the right side and will blink only when you receive a notification and the screen is off.
Q: How do I disable 3g service?
A:Settings/Wireless & Networks/Mobile network settings/Data enabled. This will keep your radio on, but if you want to completely disable the radio, put your Xoom into airplane mode and turn on wifi.
Q: I'm trying to copy files from/to my computer, but it isn't finding my Xoom... what ever shall I do?
A: Try unplugging then replugging the Xoom into the computer. Try not to use a usb-hub if you continue to have issues, as this could be the reason.
VIDEO CAPABILITIES
Q: What kind of HD videos can the Xoom play?
A: according to the Motorola forum manager Matt, as long as the bit-rate for the 720p video is 20Mbps or less you should have no issues. The file extensions it is able to play are dependent on which 3rd party apps you use, but the bit-rate needs to be 20Mbps. If you only wish to use the stock video player, check out the official Optimal video settings FAQ
If anyone has good information about the HD capabilities of the Xoom, or experience with some apps working better than others then post it in here, and I will add it in.
ROOTING/FLASHING/HACKING
Q: My Xoom is locked up / stuck on the Fast-boot / Dual Core screen - any ideas?
A: hold the Up Volume + Power button, this will reset the Xoom.
Q: What do I do if my Xoom is bricked? Is there any way to save myself from a very expensive paperweight?
A: If your Xoom is possibly bricked, then grab the SBF file from Multiupload here. To use the file, grab the latest version of RSD Lite (4.9) from Multiupload. Credit goes to LegionTHEFecalExcretion for the SBF File.
Q: Can i unlock my Xoom and flash it?
A: Yes, it is easily unlocked, however it will void your warranty. Here is a great guide on how to unlock your Xoom for flashing.
Q: How do I root my Xoom?
A: here is a great thread that will help you out.
GENERAL QUESTIONS ABOUT THE XOOM
Q: What is the size of the battery? How long will it last?
A: According to Motorola the Xoom actually has 2x3250 mAH batteries, and depending on the review it lasts from 8.4-9.5 hours with video running constantly.
Q: Am I eligible for the LTE upgrade if I root my device/not on contract?
A: Yes, just make sure to re-lock your device before you send it in just to be safe. the software they need to install will probably need to wipe the device, that is why they tell you to back up all of your data. It is after all adding a new piece of hardware. I will update this area as soon as more word comes from Motorola.
If you have anything to add, or also have a question then post it in here, and I will incorporate it into this post.
If this helped you out, then hit the thanks button!
On the stuck in fastboot or boatloader its press vol up + vol down + power to force restart
Doesn't it already have the tether and wifi hotspot in wireless settings since it's stock android? I saw it was there but didn't go in and check it out.

It'd be good to note that this isn't permanent, it won't stick around after you close the browser out.
An alternative is to use a browser like Dolphin HD or Dolphin Mini which let's you explicitly set your UAString permanently.
The Xoom has just the one Battery. It is an 3520mAh Unit.

it is 2x3520 mAH they are just packaged together. there is no way this device could last 10 hours...
I even posted a link to the motorola rep discussing it on the official moto forums. i read the ifixit article also, and I saw the photo. It doesn't say x2 but i doubt an offical motorola rep would intentionally put out bad info.

3250 not 3520
When I was in fastboot I just did power up + power and it rebooted.
Also, if you're hooked up on USB /fastboot just type fastboot reboot
How would one go about disabling the 3g service manually when not in use? Galaxy Tab you can do this by long pressing the power button.

Any way to set up Text Messaging on this? Tried setting up an APN with no success, didn't think it would work..but tried it anyways. Honeycomb can obviously handle the Messaging Service. Any ideas on this?

Or you could just put the Xoom in "Airplace Mode" ... will disable all mobile network use and still allow the device to use wifi...

I am kind of confused over this also, because when I bought mine on vzw.com it offered a texting package to add on. I still don't have mine yet, but why would they offer it if the ability isn't there. Can anyone give some insight into this?
HELP!
I rooted my atrix and am using barnacle as well as two other hotspot applications but my xoom does not recognize any of them does any one have any suggestions? I don't want to return this great device but I think I am going to have to because there's no point in paying for the service when I have a phone that enables a hotspot.
Use wireless Tether (for Root Users) and use the Bluetooth option (in the menu).
Works great for me!

[Q] new to Android: some question and would like some app recommendations

So im finally there, i have to switch to Android. I was using a windows mobile device before, so i probably expect a lot of functionality wich Android might not offer. But there are a lot of questions left i hope some of you can answer me:
General usage:
- is it possible to remove that "slide to unlock" thingy, i dont see its use, the phone has one button to toggle it that wont get pushed in my pocket
- battery symbol, i see a lot of people having an additional battery symbol with the exact percentage of the remaining power, i think thats bull****, i dont need 2 battery symbols, just one thats working the right way, is it hard to change the battery symbol in the noticication bar?
- can i bind the hardware keys, for example long press of a button starts the recording for voice control, short press opens a taskmanager
- is the copy and paste working 100% and is avaiable in all programs?
- can i have the device in USB mass storage as standard setting (not asking everytime i connect it)?
- can i have a shortcut that would check all my registred mail accounts when i click it (no automatic checking, i decide when the device connects to the internet)?
- can i create shortcuts to html, doc or excel files?
- can i use java programs in android?
- is there a program that would display a symbol for calls, sms and emails that would change their apperance when i have a missed call, new message or mail?
- is it possible to active bluethooth or wlan by shortcut or voice command?
- are there USB host drivers so i could connect USB mass storage devices?
Applications needed:
- i would like a simple task and program manager, to switch between them and close them if i want to, i thing it would be best suited in the drop down bar (since its there..why not use it)?
- SMS, call time and data counter for incoming and outgoing, is there something like that? I suppose i could put it as widget on one of the homescreens
- backup software for settings, SMS messages, emails and installed programs and their settings, is there something like that, are there backup programs that work after updating to a newer Android version?
- my device will have a Snapdragon CPU, what about a CPU speed manger that underclocks when in standby and has profiles for programs so i could run it at half speed in general but for some specific programs get the full CPU power?
- TMC data for navigation: i think there is no such thing yet, right?
- a decent file explorer with all features expected from a good explorer (it should be able to create shortcuts for html, word or any other file that the phones software can handle)
- a program that insertes local holidays into my calender, with support for birthdays wich are not in my contacts
- a good serious photoeditor: with serious i mean i dont need any effects bull**** wich comes with most camera applications, i need the ability to open large files, crop them, maybe even display tifs with layers, something like a pocket version of Photoshop
- videoplayer is there something like VLC is for windows PCs and CorePlayer is for windowsmobile? A player thats is capable of playing everything
applications i allready found and will probably use:
- as office solution i suppose i can use the programs from Softmaker, dont know if there are android drivers for my BT Freedom Keyboard
- multimessenger with MSN, ICQ, Jabber, Facebook: maybe palringo, at least it was good on windows mobile
- navigation: i think there is TomTom and Igo
- calendar that can display a whole month with visible icons for appointments: should work with pocket informant, because it does on windows
Dumb questions?
General usage:
- is it possible to remove that "slide to unlock" thingy, i dont see its use, the phone has one button to toggle it that wont get pushed in my pocket
I believe this is only possible if you have root
- battery symbol, i see a lot of people having an additional battery symbol with the exact percentage of the remaining power, i think thats bull****, i dont need 2 battery symbols, just one thats working the right way, is it hard to change the battery symbol in the noticication bar?
again, I believe you need root
- can i bind the hardware keys, for example long press of a button starts the recording for voice control, short press opens a taskmanager
pretty sure you can do things like this with root
- is the copy and paste working 100% and is avaiable in all programs?
it's always seemed fine to me.. just try it out for yourself.
- can i have the device in USB mass storage as standard setting (not asking everytime i connect it)?
I don't know of any way to do this.
- can i have a shortcut that would check all my registred mail accounts when i click it (no automatic checking, i decide when the device connects to the internet)?
go to settings-> accounts & sync. then click on the account and disable "sync gmail". Then, when you open up gmail, you can manually refresh.
- can i create shortcuts to html, doc or excel files?
I don't think so.
- can i use java programs in android?
I believe htc sense phones can but it is not included in AOSP
- is there a program that would display a symbol for calls, sms and emails that would change their apperance when i have a missed call, new message or mail?
there's lots on the market. Personally, I use launcher pro (homescreen replacement) that includes this by default. I highly recommend it.
- is it possible to active bluethooth or wlan by shortcut or voice command?
have you tried the power control widget?
- are there USB host drivers so i could connect USB mass storage devices?
It's certainly possible but it might require a custom kernel or something. I'm not sure. It depends on your hardware as well though. Many/most android phones cannot output power through their usb port, which makes this impossible. USB drives need power.
Applications needed:
- i would like a simple task and program manager, to switch between them and close them if i want to, i thing it would be best suited in the drop down bar (since its there..why not use it)?
task managers really shouldn't be necessary. android can handle it just fine itself. I do have one just in case. I like "Advanced Task Manager". As for switching between apps, just long press the home button. if it's not there, just open it from the app drawer again.
- SMS, call time and data counter for incoming and outgoing, is there something like that? I suppose i could put it as widget on one of the homescreens
phonalyzer does what you're asking for, I think.
- backup software for settings, SMS messages, emails and installed programs and their settings, is there something like that, are there backup programs that work after updating to a newer Android version?
I really like mybackup pro. However, it's impossible to backup app settings without root access. You can backup apps but not their data (progress in games for example).
- my device will have a Snapdragon CPU, what about a CPU speed manger that underclocks when in standby and has profiles for programs so i could run it at half speed in general but for some specific programs get the full CPU power?
setcpu is great. requires root.
- TMC data for navigation: i think there is no such thing yet, right?
no idea. google navigation has traffic updates of some sort.
- a decent file explorer with all features expected from a good explorer (it should be able to create shortcuts for html, word or any other file that the phones software can handle)
I use astro file manager. I don't think it can create shortcuts though. I have no idea why you would ever want this..
- a program that insertes local holidays into my calender, with support for birthdays wich are not in my contacts
google calendar can do this by default. I have no idea what you're talking about with birthdays though. Just add them to your calendar...
- a good serious photoeditor: with serious i mean i dont need any effects bull**** wich comes with most camera applications, i need the ability to open large files, crop them, maybe even display tifs with layers, something like a pocket version of Photoshop
never had an urge to do this. "Adobe Photoshop Express" might be a good place to start though.
- videoplayer is there something like VLC is for windows PCs and CorePlayer is for windowsmobile? A player thats is capable of playing everything
I don't really watch videos on my phone so I don't know.
applications i allready found and will probably use:
- as office solution i suppose i can use the programs from Softmaker, dont know if there are android drivers for my BT Freedom Keyboard
never even heard of softmaker. documents to go is supposed to be good
- multimessenger with MSN, ICQ, Jabber, Facebook: maybe palringo, at least it was good on windows mobile
I like meebo, personally.
- navigation: i think there is TomTom and Igo
I don't know why you would pay for these when you can just use google navigation for free..
- calendar that can display a whole month with visible icons for appointments: should work with pocket informant, because it does on windows
what's wrong with google calendar?

go to settings-> accounts & sync. then click on the account and disable "sync gmail". Then, when you open up gmail, you can manually refresh.

Only gmail? I would like to check severy pop3 accounts.
Didnt know there is a taskswitcher included, alawys thought id had to go the long way via homescreen.
I will check phonalyzer out thanks.
Will also check out mybackup, even though apps come from the market and a re probably newer version than in the backup, saving settings would seem more logical.
SetCPU, thanks again.

Because there are some excel and word files i often use and of course in want them fast. So shortcuts on Homescreen or where the other applications are. Speaking of that list. Is there some way to organzize it? Change the order, put some in subfolder? The way they are now it sucks.
For the birthdays i need to remember some birthdays of people that dont have phone, mail or anything. So creating a contact would be pointless. But i want to see their birthday everyyear with the info how old they get.
Will look at Adobe Photoshop Express.

It just doenst show me what i want to see.
As far as i understand google voice command (even if it would understand anything else than english allready) decodes the spoken commands online. So when i tell it to open my excel file i would first have to wait till my phone connects to the internet. Is there any voice command software that works on the device and not in the cloud. Like voice command for windows mobile did?
i recommend the app Trapster.
I switched from WM to android not that long ago, so I kanda know where you're coming from. You do have to unmount your storage from your phone every time you want to transfer things, I usually just send things over the air and avoid plugging in. WM loved to be attached to your computer, but android would rather be connected to the internet. I think if you're running sense you can transfer stuff with HTCsync without unmounting every time, not 100% though as I flashed sense onto my N1 a couple times but never downloaded HTCsync.
I think you'll want a rom with sense on it. Sense has the 'sync all' button that you can put on your home screen to sync all of your accounts on demand. They also have a partnership with TomTom for offline navigation. There's also a nice calendar widget, and unread counts for your messages, etc. If you were using touch flo on WM, HTC have kept a lot of the nice features in sense on android.
Android isn't as friendly for key mapping as WM was. You can get onscreen toggles for most things, though. there was one rom I had on my N1 for a while, I think it was CM6, where there were toggles on the drop down menu. This made it possible to switch settings in-app, which I missed from WM. For app-switching, just long-press home to bring up your MRU list. One of the other things I miss from WM is having the battery bar that runs all the way across the top of the screen, just on the top few pixels. Only 1 rom I tried, the MIUI rom, was able to do this. It was a lot easier to mess with in WM.
Programs:
file manager - Astro
IM - IM+, nimbuzz, fring, etc. there are lots of them. im+ does skype
backup - I used SMS backup&restore for SMS, Titanium takes care of everything else.
Calendar - google calendar lets you set a repeating event for birthdays, automatically adds the holidays you tell it to.
Also, USB host is possible, but you need to use a powered USB hub to power the device you're plugging in. Doesn't seem to be another way to get power to the port. If USB host is really important, a hacked kernel and a powered port should get the job done.
I hope this helps, and don't worry. Once you've used android for a while, you'll see that it's really user-friendly. I'm sure you'll grow to love it.
Try Jorte calendar if your don't like the Goggle one.
If you get a phone that's rootable, try Root Explorer for file explorer.

Jorte isnt bad for displaying texts each day in monthview, but symbols would be better.
Never cared much for Sense, to much graphics to little information.
IM+ sounds good, all in one +Skype would be great.
What me really bothers is that USB thingy, cant it unmount in backgroud without bothering me, even winmobile was able to do that.
Another question: Would trying out a lot of apps polute my OS like it happens with windows (leftover files and registry settings after uninstalling). Or ist Anrdois perfect in this matter.
If not i guess i would have to test a lot of apps till i find the ones i like, then hard rest and make a clean install, or wont this be nessesary in Android?
From what I can tell, if you uninstall an app, everything is cleaned up with the exception of maybe a folder on your sdcsrd. And this generally only happens if the app has an optional setting that allows you to specify that the sdcard be used for backups or downloads, etc.

Pretty much true.
the sd card thing is really frustrating. sometimes apps add stuff to seemingly random folders on your sd card so you don't know if you can delete it or not. Apps should be forced to only create folders with the same name as the app. Also, I think you should be able to implement an "onUninstall" method or something in your app, with which you could delete all of the files that you created.
Not everyone has data...

[Q] Can Android Market be installed on a non rooted KF?

I have a few questions and they are probably answered here but I'm at work so its very hard tor me to get on my phone.
- is their a way to get android market on a KF even if its not rooted? I really would just like to install apps that are not in the amazon market. A new launcher, etc. Do you have to be rooted to install apps from android?
- What is side loading apps? I keep hearing people talk about this? What is it for?
- is there a way to text people from my KF? If so can anyone tell me a good app?
- how can I change the amazon keyboard to say swiftkey or something?
- any way to play movies on the KF? Could I drop a mkv, avi, divx, etc. movie from my pc onto my kindle? Or could I stream it to my kindle somehow?
- last question to now...is there a way to improve the touch screen response? I have to repeatedly touch icons, links and whatnot. I thought I saw an app that improves the KF screen?
Thanks everyone for the help, its greatly appreciated.

1) No. Market needs root to install. Some other launchers work without root, but you now have to side load them. You can add other non-Amazon apps in many cases, but without root, you can't use the Android Market, so you would need to side load them.
2) Copying the APK install files via download or via usb or other means.
3) The Kindle Fire is not a phone, there is no radio in the device so no text messaging. You can use things like Google Talk but you need root to install it. There are some web based txt stuff, but that is not really on the device.
4) Need root to do this
5) There are other video players that will do this. Like MX Video player
6) Not really.
6 In particular is starting to get on my nerves. I think its an OS/Kernel issue because tapping stuff elsewhere seems to be ok, but that bar is a headache. Hit back 5x and you see it light up each time.
Also I dont know if its dolphin browser or what but a lot of the times I tap a typing area like google search, after 2-3 letters it just hides the keyboard.
Also I've been having more issues where you click a typable area and start typing, but nothing shows. Keyboard is showing recommended words, but none will actually show on the screen.
Oh, also if you're watching a video on a site, good luck moving the time bar. Sometimes I have to press and hold my finger 2-3 seconds for it to trigger.
Seems to be a little worse since 6.2 imo.
Once the kindle is rooted and the entire market is installed does the kindle act like an android phone? Do you get the android home screen? With cm7 does your tablet act just like phone obviously without gos and so on.

The market is just an app that you use to get more apps.
It will still look and feel like an out of the box kindle fire.
And last I recall the market wont show up in the standard kindle launcher, so no one would even know it was there.
You have to take additional steps to even utilize it.
CM7 would make it act like an android device. there are tablets with CM7 so it has nothing to do with phones. Gos I assume is gps, and some tablets have that so it isnt phone only.
Hi,
Please refer to the article below. It will give you a deeper understanding of what rooting is and some tweaks you can do to the unit.
http://www.terracode.com/KindleFire/KF_Review_and_Tweaks_P1.html
If you have google voice linked with your Sprint number, you can send and receive texts via Google Voice
I have the Market installed but for some reason there are tons of apps missing for the market. Is their way to fix this?
Apps like Yahoo Fantasy Football to Google Maps or Google Earth are not there.

I think you can send/receive a limited number of text messages as well as make /receive calls with a free Google Voice account. I have not tested this with the Kindle Fire, so someone else may correct me.
There is an app called TouchScreen Booster that may help you adjust your screen sensitivity.
the following is from an other thread i don't remember (thanks to them !)
additional settings in build.prop:
# Rendering User Interface With GPU
debug.sf.hw=1
# Increase overall touch responsiveness
video.accelerate.hw=1
windowsmgr_max_events_per_sec=150
debug.performance.tuning=1
MAKE BACKUP COPY !!! - CAUTION WITH MODIFYING BUILD.PROP !!!
if your not sure - leave it !
i made this settings and i'm satisfied ...
Go to Kindle Fire browser Google search for "applanet". Under the link will be on the left "familiar interface" I tried that one first and it didn't work. On the right of it is one called "Version". I clicked that one and it directly started downloading an app. Tap the upper left part of the screen where the notifications are and when it is done downloading tap on its notification. It will install. (prior to this you need to go to settings - device and turn on download from unknown sources) install it and it creates an app called Applanet Market. Go to the Amazon market and search for ADW ex. Download that. You may find apps on Applanet that are not in Amazons.Search for any application you want. Like youtube, earth, gmail, whatever. When you're done playing with applanet hit your home key. It will give you a choice of ADW or stock. Check off the default box and choose ADW. Go to menu at bottom and go to ADW settings. Advanced. Set columns to 6 and rows to 6 and return back. At the bottom middle you have the ADW 3 button controller. I opened the app drawer (middle button) and dragged the Kindle Fire launcher to home screen and then long pressed it and dragged it over the area left of the appdrawer button. It will stick here and with it you can get to the stock KF home screen. But whenever you tap home, you will go to ADW. If you ever want to change that, go to settings. Applications. ADW. And at the lower area you can choose to release the default.

In response to this and OP's earlier question, MX is good. Moboplayer is good too, but I've been having full screen problems with Mobo. On streaming, you can use Dropbox or Sugarsync (I use SS, there is a thread on it in the apps category). For streaming though, I've found that MX doesn't work great and Mobo is better, which is why I use that for streaming, although I still have the full screen issues. If you stream using SS, just make sure that file is encoded in a quality to get a good stream. There is also another thread on how to setup files to do this in apps category as well.
