Skype for Wildfire - Wildfire General

Does anyone have skype for Wildfire?

no skype for android so far.
there was a skype lite client but i think they stopped dev. on it.

I use Nimbuzz and works great,
i heard there is no skype for android but i wan't sure

hmm now i found this here http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-mobile/skype-mobile/android/ iam really confused now ???

Isn't it only available for specific phones listed on the website, is it?

Yes it seems so. I read somewhere else that till the end of the year there should be out a version for every android device. Hmm strange anyway.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App

Its Not Yet available for HTC wildfire. Even for Android they seem to have versions specific to phone models. I would suggest that everyone can visit http://m.skype.com from phone browser..and they can check periodically.

It seams that skype is out for android devices but I cannot find it on the market in wildfire...
Is there some problem with skype and this device?

Yes, not suppprted display res...

Can somebody provide the apk file?

I also installed it with appbrain (and fastwebinstaller)
It opens fine, I can login en view my contacts, open the dialer, get a notification in the status bar whenever someone skypes me,
but when I try to press a contact to chat it just crashes...

I managed to install it also, but same problem here crashes all the time, uninstalled...
Too bad for skype, => sipdroid is the best program for me...

I've got it on my wildfire....had too download it from 3 mobile to get the apk file though

I used an old Skype lite

Zorkman, That dont really matter though, means you can use it anywere and mobile net is pretty cheap in the uk.

The thing is, the Skype looks ok on the Wildfire. I mean, i didn't notice any problems related to low resolution, just the Force Closing ones. Which is strange, because as far as I know the original response from the developer was that Skype DOES NOT support Wildfire's Low Resolution, and it DOES. 'll be waiting for someone with more info.

that might be right for inhabitants of the Empire, but I don't live in the UK, or a country with cheap mobile internet,
so it does matter to me

Gmail Phone Calls

Hi, I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, but here it is anyway. My brother has gmail and so do I. He has Motorola Droid whereas I have x10. In gmail he has option to make phone calls and I don't. Not sure why? Does it has something to do with the phones we are using or something else?
thanks
Bikram

The update of 2.1 will be here in our life time!!
I am gussing it's Google Voice.
No, its gmail phone call not google voice.
It works for me (in Canada), try going to this link and installing the voice plugin, then see if you can do it...
http://www.google.com/chat/voice/
I don't understand why this works in Canada, while Google Voice doesn't...
Edit:
I tried it in the morning on the office computer and after installing it didn't come up. I just did it and it worked at home's computer.
I thought you meant at first that you have it on your phone..
You are probably referring to this: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/08/25/MNGI1F37PS.DTL
Google announced yesterday that people can now make phone calls from within Gmail (not Google Talk). I think this only works in USA and Canada, and maybe also a 2.1/2.2 feature.

I called my cellphone from Gmail on my laptop this morning. I'm in Ottawa, so either Canada's been annexed by the U.S without anyone knowing D) , or it works for Canadian clients.
No idea how to get it to work on my X10 though. The link posted by chris_knows seems to download a Windows client plugin (or at least it does in xScope Browser), not something that can be installed onto Android.

It works for me too...but when I try calling myself, it gives me a California area code, so I think I'm just gonna stick to calling land lines haha.
But for the X10, my understanding is that it can only be done through Google Voice, which is only available in the U.S.
Works in Canada from the desktop same as Skype does. This is not Google Voice.
Since the Google Voice app is available in the Canadian app market though (don't know why) you could try going to the Google Voice webpage and creating an account if you use a VPN with a US server. That's how I got my Sipgate account.

Again, all the articles state it's only available in the US, but I (and others) have used it here in Canada (though as chris_knows states, it gives a US phone number as your source number).
Anyone know if users in the US have any way to make such calls via their Android phone, or is it purely desktop-based at the moment?
Still waiting for Google Voice in Canada... hopes this brings it soon.
I tried from the same computer, but my account didn't work whereas my brothers account works. Still didn't get why its not working

Looks like to call from android phone, you need to use google voice application. Too bad google voice not available in Singapore yet.

I have Skype running on the JPO rom (Froyo) it's running reliable and hasn't force closed once for me.
Try looking at the development forums to find out how to flash Froyo on your phone.
Thanks , which Skype version you have ? I have Froyo rooted, ext. sd 8 GB. I always get : out of space " can't install....I have enough space in all memories. Any tip please ?
Is there a new, hacked version of Skype that allows 3G calling in the US without using your mobile carrier minutes on a Galaxy S with Froyo?
It still doesn't have video calling which makes it useless to me.
i dont need video calling

Not with Skype. But it works with the latest version of Fring.
I am not so worried about the audio function of skype as 90% of the people I voice call with, I dont pay for in my networks contract anyway. I am curious about video calling. I suspect (for Ireland at least) that it is disabled due to specific agreements with other network providers.
But in theory, the data connection from 3G or HCDP (I probably mixed up those initials), there should be no problem with a video call.
Unfortunately, that is only something to think about, because, until Skype provide an official Android version that supports video calls, there is little that most Android users can do about it (Unless someone knows of a 3rd party app that works ).
[edit] Oh yeah, this works with fring, I forgot.
I have skype on my SGS and SG Tab. Works a treat when i wabt to chat with the wife when im working. Works well on 3g aswell which i was happy about.
I read online that skype and facebook were looking to merge in the near future...

[Q] New Market?

new market update? does anyone have any idea if this can be implemented by end users, or whether it will need to be cooked into ROMs?
see article

I am presuming that it will be delivered to us as an updated version of the android market app. once it is released.

Just thought I'd chime in & report that they're apparently pushing the new market out already. I went to download some apps earlier & found the new market on my phone. It seems a lot faster than the old market.

Mine too.
Think you just have to enable the accounts & sync background data and voila it gets updated unknowingly through data so wifi should not be a problem as well.

Skype with video on XOOM

I don't know may it's stupid request, but may could change somehow apk for Thunderbolt that it works on our XOOM devices? I tried to install apk of Skype with Video on my XOOM WiFi, but without success.

I would LOVE to have this working on our Xooms!
Yeah! That will be pretty neat. I'm not a dev, but truly believe that this apk isn't just sighned for xoom, and that results in "app not installed" message
I tried to install it too, didnt work ;-(
There has to be something within the files that only allow it to work on the Thunderbolt. I opened the apk and searched through the files, but did not see any type of device ID or anything that read "thunderbolt" or HTC. I remember when I used to make BlackBerry hybrids, there were "device IDs" that could be modified. I am uncertain about Android.
I am going to try and install it on other model phones running Froyo and see what I can figure out.
The only other thing I could think is that it is just not written to be compatable with honeycomb as most apps arent.
It won't install on my Evo either

Yes, at least I'm check it, but it doesn't help
Tried installing that APK on Nexus 1, Galaxy S and Xoom, none of them work. There seems to be a lot of buzz about this but not too much info beyond that.
Skype really needs to release a Honeycomb video chat client. With so many HC tablets in the works, it would really be a killer app.
However, I think I can understand Skype's hesitation. Can you fellas imagine the massive amounts of traffic that would hit Skype's datacenters?
I just tried G-Chat Video chat, and it works amazingly well if you guys haven't tried it. At least as a temporary alternative.
Why don't google hurry up and update talk with video like when using gmail you can video chat?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Google's video-chat already works on the Xoom.
Is that a tablet only thing as it's missing from galaxy s?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Google talk video was released only for Honeycomb.
It cross platform Google solution because it works with PC and mac running Google talk.
Unfortunately, there is no such thing for Froyo.
Is there a way to use Google Talk for calls with Skype users?
FYI this program works on XOOM and available for Android and iOs system.

Facebook via Android

Hi,
First of much love to Android and may it be the best (and better than Apple)
I use Facebook additively and I installed Facebook for Android via Market.
Every time I post a status update or a check in using my HD2 I get " via mobile " instead of "via Andoid"
I would like to have "via Android" so everyone can see who great and versatile Android is.
I have uninstalled the Facebook app that came with the rom (HD2 NDT GINGER ROM Version 16.0) and downloaded and installed Facebook for Android via Market.
But this did not fix the problem so I checked my Facebook account settings and there wasn't anything there.
Does anyone know how to get "via Andriod" on Facebook?
P.s. I know you can change status via 3rd party apps and I prefer make the app do what it was designed to do.
FYI the android facebook app sucks ass even though everyone uses it...including me...

I have used the xda app but it clearly says "via xda" I would like via Android as I did installed it.
Account Settings are ok and there's nothing there to suggest there is a problem.
In fact, there is no suggestion I have Facebook for Android installed which is totally strange.

Basically, this letter means XDA developers should run Facebook as they are complete idiots.
I know it used to say via Android instead of via mobile but it seems there was an update of the app at one point and it disappeared. To test if you want you could install an older version of Facebook on your phone by finding it's apk file online. This was done by Facebook though but at the rate their app is developing and the quality it is, it shouldn't come as a surprise to us that they make stupid mistakes. Facebook is a huge company that could easily make a better Android app and I don't understand why they don't care... I encourage you do give them a 1 star rating on the Android market and write what you think of their app there.

I second that one. FB app for Android is huge pile of bull ****. I'm using it myself and the number of bugs is enormous.
I remember I was seeing "via Android" signatures before but they must have changed something so now it's gone.

It's really weird that on my wall it clearly states "installed Facebook for Android"
So I have no idea what's going on!
I was running Windows 6.5 stock but Windows Mobile app is totally useless and had no Places feature. And then, I installed XDA app but that was not that impressive and gave a "XDA Windows Mobile" tag. As much as I like XDA I don't want it as a tag on all my posts.
