Sprint will have the slowest speeds in 2011? - EVO 4G General

Interesting... I was reading this article (http://androidandme.com/2010/07/car...ons-why-t-mobile-3g-is-better-than-sprint-4g/) that speculates that Sprint will have the slowest speeds by the end of 2011.
Of course, the primary purpose of the article is to pit T-Mobile's 3G against Sprint's 4G... but also goes on to talk about AT&T and Verizon. I'll summarize what I gathered in the article.
Sprint's "4G" WiMax speeds have a theoretical limit of 11 Mpbs. I've personally been able to hit 3 Mbps. Some people on T-Mobile's 3G HSPA+ can apparently hit 5 Mbps with a theoretical limit of 21 Mbps.
AT&T will also upgrade to HSPA+, but with a theoretical limit of 14.4 Mbps (still faster than Sprint). The article specualtes that Verizon will have the fastest 4G available, but not until a year from now.
Do you think Sprint will up their game? Is that even possible? Did I choose the wrong carrier when I went with the EVO?

In two years switch to the fastest network. Why worry about it now...and really are you going to have same phone in two years?

Alot can happen between now and the end of next year. I believe you made a good choice being that Evo is a kickass phone and Sprint has the best plans and service (imo). This article may very well be accurate or not so, either way I give credit to Sprint for pushing pretty hard to get 4G to out as fast as they did even if is not as fast as they make it to be. Anyways...the Evo will be old by the end of next year regardless so you can choose again I think sprint will adjust accordingly to the market when that time comes.

Unfortunately this article falls short in a number of ways:
Sprint's current WiMax standard (802.16e) has a max theoretical downspeed of 144Mb/s. 802.16m, the future revision of WiMax has a theoretical max of 1Gb/s.
HSPA+'s current max speed is 56Mb/s, and the future revision max is 168Mb/s.
Nobody's network right now is even close to those speeds. Sprint has a head start, and the existing infrastructure to build off of in terms of subscribers and towers.
T-Mobile has Deutsch Telekom's money to build off of, but their existing 3G coverage is grossly lacking.
Granted both parties are trying to build as much as possible, but in the end I'll stick with Sprint.
Your call.

Let's just keep in mind that that these are theoretical maximum transfer rates possible under ideal conditions. Once you take into account the real world signal conditions, tower loading, and backhaul capacity it's a completely different ballgame.

Your totally right. Think about it Wireless N has a theoretical speed of 300mbps, but for the most part you'd be lucky to get a transfer speed over 180mbps (at least in my case, some might get a little higher) because this is theoretical and could someday reach that potential. The same goes for 4g. Everyone has their own speeds and systems but in the end its just a matter of who has better coverage. At&t and t-mobile might have "more bars in more spaces", but in my experience sprint and verizon have far superior data networks and I don't think thats going to end anytime soon. So for me I'll stick with Sprint.

For me the important thing is Sprint has the fastest speed RIGHT NOW. I live in Seattle and average 3-5 with 4G (recently got a lot better). A year or two from now I may move somewhere else but for now my friends look on enviously.

Agreed. Besides, to me the most important thing right now is how long sprint's going to keep the unlimited data option. Who knows,in two years with everyone capping data, might as well go to the provider who's gonna fill the bucket fastest. Who exactly is going to be the fastest? That's anyones guess right now, but it doesn't really matter because alot can change in two years.

based on my experience, AT&T's 3G performance (latency aside) with an HSUPA-enabled device is excellent and trumps Sprint's 3G by far. I constantly pull 3.5 mbit/s down, 1.6mbit/s up on my phone, which is comparable or perhaps a slight tick below Sprint's WiMax performance levels.

N1 users on Tmo raped us in speed tests still.. so sprint is still slow.. I get usually 2-3mb down most of the time, N1 users are boastin 5-10mb+ down on tmo 3g.. =\

I average 3-5Mgs here in Chicago on 4G

Stupid argument since Sprint/Clearwire is switching to 802.16e Enhanced by the end of the year, with a software update and a few hardware changes. Research the stats for it, and then see if you agree with that post.
Sprint will be using LTE, one way or another. They've already contacted suppliers a few months ago.
Sent from the Samsung Fascinate with Verizon.

Heh. This is why I posted this thread. Just about everyone is more informed than I am. I love my EVO but everyone was looking at me like I was crazy when switching to Sprint.
I'm mostly concerned because I do find Sprint's current 3G-4G offerings to be pretty slow... and my reception isn't as good as my Fiance's who is on AT&T. She points that out all the time...
I'd prefer to have a balance between good reception and good internet speeds. These are phones, after all

If you stick with a smartphone long enough, you'll realize that at the beginning of the year one carrier might be dominant, but by the end of the year the title has changed.
Stick with what you've got (unless your on Cricket ), and you'll be alright.

It also comes down to unlimited data vs limited data. The other guys are all changing their data plans (tmobile and sprint aside).
What its the point if slightly faster speed if you can only use it half the month because of data caps.

I'm happy with mine. I got this speed while using wifi tether on my laptop
Also note I used the browser to test this speed

I was thinking about this yesterday while stuck in the car streaming Pandora. I am glad I don't have to worry about how my music I stream for fear of running out of data.
The Everything Plan is what will keep me on Sprint, even if they are a bit slower.
The compression and technologies (html5, silverlight) are going to provide better performance streaming with less throughput. So are you really ever going to need more than 3-5mb on your phone? You arn't going to hit many sources that can provide you data faster than you can download.
(I can see needing more if you are tethering multiple devices)

I just worry that their speedy push to 4g is going to leave there 3g network in the dust. Let's face it there are still plenty of places that do not have even a 3g network, at least in my state there is. If someplace doesn't even have access to 3g there is no way they are going to get 4g.

Atrix Wireless Speeds and ATT disabling HSUPA

Many of us saw the abysmal wireless speeds posted in the Engadget review.
I have performed some additional research and I believe ATT disables HSUPA (the faster upload connection) on all phones except the iPhone. This obviously also affect download speeds as the TCP responses are slowed down.
http://emuneee.com/2011/02/is-att-disabling-hsupa-on-its-4g-devices/
I know everyone has asked 88 Million questions about the encrypted bootloader, and we really won't have an answer until the phone is released.
However, my question is, can the HSUPA limitation be removed such as by flashing a new modem.bin? Perhaps using the modem firmware from the international version?
When I read "I believe ATT disables HSUPA (the faster upload connection) on all phones except the iPhone" I thought about it for a second and did a speedtest on my Captivate.
I have full bars in my house, on HSPA.

Upload speeds faster than download speeds? WTF?
Here's Engadget's speedtests on an iPhone 4 on AT&T. (On the right)
Obviously something is a little off.
Cool, well I hope it isn't an issue then.
I searched for more reports and it looks like this may have been initially reported because of an error in AT&T's network?? But may have been fixed around August 2010?

Plus there was this whole mess on another forum:
http://androidforums.com/samsung-captivate/137436-how-enable-hsupa-captivate.html
Based on your results it looks like this may not be an issue and I may just be creating rumors. I guess I should be patient and just wait for the release day.

They disable hsupa on all phone except the iphone eventhe captivate, you have a non stock fw and probably a tl3 modem flased to your cappy, btw im running darky9.3
I think this is a an issue.
The speeds are nothing close to 4g, and the tests on the atrix are consistently under 2mbs.
That sucks.
i get 4 down with my capt and 2 up
busy around 2.5-3
I got to play with an Atrix at a bar a couple weeks ago (friend of mine reps for Motorola), and the download speeds were consistently under 2 megs even though the H+ symbol was active. I hope this gets sorted out on or before march 6th.
Also I do recall seeing a speed test video of the inspire 4g getting speeds over 3 meg down so it could also be an issue of where I am using the phone.
On my Aria it's not uncommon for me to hit download speeds at or above 3 Mbs, granted it's been running CyanogenMod since the first day I owned it, so idk if the custom ROM has any effect on AT&T disabling anything...
EDIT:
On another note, when I was checking if my local AT&T store had demo Atricies p) today, I asked an sales rep about the speeds and all she said was that the inspire was getting much faster speeds then her iPhone 3GS. After she walked away, I proceeded to turn off wi-fi, download the speedtest.net app and run it. Sure enough it got 1.5 Mbs down though :/
I think this is a major concern.
There is no evidence what so ever that the Atrix gets anywhere near "4g" speeds.
And I think the whole "but AT$T hasn't finished the build out" is a BS excuse my captivate running a rom gets better download speeds. That is just unacceptable.
I think you can hope in one hand that AT$T will improve the speed on the ATRIX and **** in the other and see which one gets filled up first.
The only way it will get fixed is the same way the captivate is running Froyo, you will have to root it and then flash a faster modem. Hopefully flashing a modem will be possible with locked down bootloader.
Lol, I would LOVE to get 1.5 mbps down. I'm in the capital of the free world and I hardly get up to 500 kbps on my Craptivate, with a JK4 modem.
Seems difficult to imagine AT&T shooting themselves in the foot with their first "4G" branded phone by limiting the upload.
I am hoping they fix it before launch and maybe that is why there has been just a trickle of reviews on the phone so far.
AT&T are indeed disabling HSUPA on all their phones expect the iPhone for an unknown reason.
This WILL result in slower upload speeds AND slower download speeds due to how TCP works.
All the above above me saying they are getting fast upload speeds are running none stock at&t firmware with none stock modem firmware.
It was also shown that the "Inspire 4G' has been crippled with having HSUPA disabled and is having slower speeds as well.
This is a really big issue for me. I'm on an iPhone 4 and I live in chicago, I get about 5.8 Mbps down and 1.3 Mbps up. That inside my condo. My upload is always consistent around the city, the download can dip to 2 Mbps here and there. But what I'm getting at is I have really excellent speed on my iphone 4 in chicago.
I've seen reviews on the htc inspire and the atrix, and I don't know if it's the part of the country they're in or AT&T is actually limiting, but the upload speed is horrible on these "4g" phones.
I can't live with slow data speed, I just refuse. I have an unlimited plan and pay 30 a month for it. I'm tired of getting dicked around with the evil carriers. They want our money, but they don't want to give us service to match.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
You are not going to get the speed that you are getting with Iphone I agree that it really sucks.
I think the fact is that the reason the atrix does not have lte is that AT$T is behind in their lte roll out.
HSPA+ is bs as far as I'm concerned. The whole thing hinges on the fiber connecting the towers, which is the major thing holding up LTE. You aren't going to see better speeds until the fiber is laid and who knows how that will take for them to do?
I was just at my local att store to check and see when my upgrade was available so I can get myself an Atrix 4G and I noticed on the new HTC phone they offer, the inspire or something, the radio was indeed not set for the higher speeds. The baseband version on the Nexus One is 32.50.00.32U_5.12.00.08 and the "U" denotes the use of the higher speed 3G, whatever that is called, and the phone in the store had the "H" in place which means the slower of the two.
Easily fixed in the build.prop, but kinda interesting to see they artificially limit speeds even in their newest "4G" phones.

I was excited about the atrix too but now I'm sitting back and watching also. I'm pretty happy with my flashed captivate at the moment. ATT in my opinion is quite deceptive in their practices. They just hope people will not notice. I am now waiting to get the Galaxy S II international version which supports ATT HSPA+ so I can bypass all the ATT restrictions. I will buy it straight from samsung unlocked. Another good thing is that you most likely will not have to worry about a locked bootloader and since it's international it will have good XDA support hopefully. Just look at the i9000.
Yeah, I have been torn too about the Atrix. It is without a doubt a sweet phone.
But I find it completely unacceptable that it is slower on download speeds than the iphone 4, that is a crock of ****.
And AT$T is supposedly rolling out LTE in just a few months which is real 4g speed, not the Bs HSPA+ AT$T is selling now.
Why the hell doesn't the Atrix support Lte?
What is going to suck is buying the Atrix and then having AT$T rollout lte in your town, but being stuck on their crappy half ass HSPA+ crap for 2 years. Fact is their HSPA+ marketing is just a cheap ploy since Verizion is beating the **** out of them on LTE rollout.

No, it doesn't. The first LTE phone isn't coming out until much later this year.
Every "4G" phone that's coming out untill Q3 is HSPA+ or WiMax. The ones after Q3 will have SOME LTE, but even those aren't going to be faster than the HSPA+ or WiMax phones for another 2 years or so.
For the earlier poster, the test was done in New York, which is overcrowded for frequency and carrier space. I always get like 2-3x what they give in the reviews (I live in Chicago too).
I'm sure you'll have tons of examples of the upload and download speed in a week, but I'm gonna bet it's better than iphone 4 if you aren't in New York.
I smell a lawsuit here.
You can't sell a phone as "4G" in its title, forcing people to move to "4g" data plans while not only not providing 4G but actually disabling full 3G (i.e. disabling HSUPA).
That is just fraudulent and i honestly don't see how they are going to get away with it this time.
Until now they got away with it on the Captivate and other phones because they didn't commit to anything, but with the Atrix and HTC Inspire 4G they are actually defrauding the customers by disabling HSUPA which disables HSPA+ (4G) as a result.

Sprint Xoom

For anyone wanting (or waiting) for a Sprint version of the Xoom, it looks like it's going to be a real thing.
http://www.bgr.com/2011/03/18/image-of-sprint-branded-motorola-xoom-surfaces-online/
It also appears that it will have the silver back.
While I would have probably preferred a Sprint Xoom, since Im already a Sprint customer, I'll be satisfied with the additional accessories that will probably be made available (if not by Sprint, then simply due to manufactures catering to a larger market).

Yeah I was looking forward to the WIFI xoom.. I might hold off for now.
I'm actually glad I went ahead and got it with Verizon. Many times I have two totally different signal strengths on my phone and Xoom. Hopefully this means I will have better coverage at any given moment... plus Verizon's data is definitely faster than Sprint's in my area.
But yeah, please let's get some more accessories!

I hadn’t really thought of it that way, but you raise an interesting capability. Armed with my Sprint Evo and a Verizon Xoom, you would then be able to pretty simply wirelessly tether one to the other… based upon whichever had the strongest network where you happen to be.
UGH. How much does it cost to add an additional device to sprint's unlimited plan, anyone remember? I'm still probably getting the wifi.
Sweet! I was already planning to return my Verizon Xoom today anyways, but now I know I can get one again when the Sprint one comes out.

Well with the Sprint Galaxy Tab, you have 2 options:
2GB for 29.99 or
5GB for 59.99
And of course if this is a 4G device, they'll probably slap on the $10 Premium Data fee.
I have an evo as you can tell by my sig and I live in a 4G city (wimax and lte), first wimax sucks unless you are stationary. You can take 3 steps or just walk inside and lose signal. I'm definitely going to love having lte over wimax. This is just my opinion as I've tried wimax and lte here in my city, bring on this lte upgrade for my xoom

Have to agree. I had the Evo from release till January and the 4G is just not useful at all. I used it on 3G 99% of the time. I bought the Evo because my city was one of the main launch areas with "full 4G coverage". The problem was, if I was inside my apartment, I couldn't even get a single bar of 4G, no matter what the coverage map says (said I was in 100% strong 4G area). Even downtown I could get 1-2 bars inside, and maybe 3-4 outside. The problem is that the 4G speeds required me to be outside generally, and not moving because the service was so spotty I'd get choppy performance.
Not to mention that the 4G radio crushed my battery, and the speeds were mediocre. I got about 3mbps down/1mbps (capped) up. Not worth the drain for speeds only 1mbps more download vs. 3G speed.

VZW LTE vs. Sprint WiMAX

So my girlfriend picked up a Thunderbolt, and I have to admit I'm pretty jealous of the 4G speeds and coverage she's getting. In our building, I don't get any Sprint signal at all in the basement (I always roam on VZW), meanwhile she's speed-testing at 18mbps. In fact pretty much everywhere we've gone in the area, she gets LTE coverage both inside and out, much unlike the EVO's pretty-much-outside-only WiMAX coverage...
I've found WiMAX to work pretty well if I'm outside or in my car, and I'm sitting perfectly still. Of course I can't leave it enabled unless I use my extended battery, or else the phone will be dead in short order.
I guess Sprint's 9 months of being the only provider with "real" 4G phones was nice while it lasted, but VZW is really kicking ass now when it comes to 4G speed and coverage, to the point where I'd say they're pretty much the only player in town.

Well, yeah, your lady is going to get blistering speeds because there might be 1000 people in your whole city with LTE right now. Verizon says it expects 5-12Mbps on "loaded cells." I just touched 10Mbs in Manhattan -- on a loaded net. Not saying WiMax is perfect; far from.
Here's the thing: it doesn't matter to me if you go to VZW -- in fact you're one less connected user on WiMax, so I'll be incrementally faster. If you're gonna go to Verizon, do so once you see what performance of both the net and the device is going to be -- in real world, saturated network situations.
Realistically even when the network gets loaded itll still be faster than wimax. Just like with twice the users the 3G is better also. It just is what it is.

Same thing here. I am ok living with sprints lesser service for the price difference.
The frequencies Verizon has for LTE are fundamentally better than what Clear/Sprint are using for WiMax, at least in terms of building penetration. The higher frequencies do have some advantages, but to me they're *completely* negated by the fact that I go from an "Excellent" 4G signal in the parking lot at work to alternating between "Poor" and "No signal" as soon as I walk in the building. VZW could put Wimax on their frequencies, or Sprint could put LTE on their frequencies, and either way, VZW would win. If Sprint deploys LTE on the Nextel frequencies, we'll have a much more even race.
That said, I like what I pay for Sprint and (especially with the AT&TMobile thing) I don't want to see Sprint fail. I'm sticking with them for now. But 4G on Sprint has been very, very disappointing. There is a point in time -- yet to be determined for me -- when I'll suck it up and pay VZW's prices if Sprint can't improve the 4G network in a major way.

Realistically even when the network gets loaded itll still be faster than wimax. Just like with twice the users the 3G is better also. It just is what it is.

This isn't necessarily true.
As a standard, WiMax has potential for higher speeds than LTE. Significantly higher -- like 30% higher. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_wireless_data_standards
The question is, implementation, as always. Of course, it may be a moot point, as Sprint may cut bait from Clear (because of their mismanagement) and go with their LTE plans with LightSquared in tow.
My point remains, leaving Sprint now, based on VZW's LTE speeds NOW vs what they may be when fully-loaded might be a grass-greener-on-the-other-side move. And you know how that usually ends up...
My house is small and my work has thin walls, I get awesome 4g speed pretty much all the time. I guess if where your at you don't have the same results switch. You'll probably be happier.

Yea and 10 times out of 10 we will NEVER see wimax speeds that high.. not if Clear is responsible for deploying it. And honestly the grass is greener not only interms of 4G speeds, but coverage and 3G speeds as well. In terms of VZW vs Sprint you pretty much get what you pay for. In terms of data I rarely even use the evo anymore. Turning on my wimax is pointless honestly unless im close to a tower. Even if VZW's speeds get chopped in half, which I doubt, itll still be faster than wimax here. The biggest factor is if you look at how many towers VZW has here as compared to Sprint, it makes sense as to why you can get LTE pretty much everywhere you go in in Metro Atlanta as compared to Wimax.. where once you leave downtown you're not really guaranteed to get it at all.
still love Sprint...
Long time Sprint here my self..
But 89.99 + 20% discount for unlimited 4G with Verizon was only $10 more than what i was paying with Sprint..
I love Sprint to death, but until they use their 800MHz spectrum for 4G then i'll be staying with Verizon..
I mean look at these insane speeds...

I just made this exact post in another thread lol. VZW is NOT that much more than Sprint anymore. Especially since Sprint made the $10 premium data mandatory for all smart phones. And im telling you now, if VZW does decide to make that promo that they ran for the any mobile for the same price, its gonna get ugly.

VZW is not much more for an individual user, but with a family plan its a lot more. Total for my 4 smartphones was 60 more a month. Not worth it, especially getting 10Mbps down everywhere I go. 15 vs 10 is just not a big deal to me.

my plan three evo's after tax and 22% discount is 167, verizon for two phones not three after tax and discount was 189!
But like it was said if vzw did anytime any mobile. I might consider it. but then again 90% of people we know are on verizon so maybe it doesn matter.
these are the same customers that complained about the $10/fee
they aint going to pay $10-20 more ...
i agree sprint wimax signal is a joke.. i am in DFW (one of the major oginal wimax cities).. and it sucks!... so much so that I use a ROM that does not even have wimax support!.
i sure hope that sprint has real plans to fix this asap with wimax...not lte.
OP here. I switched from VZW to Sprint for the EVO, so I knew what I was coming from. When we got WiMAX here (DC/Baltimore area) it was at first very spotty, and it's still moderately spotty. I suppose I was expecting to see the same from VZW's LTE offerings, at least for the next year or so, but I was surprised to see how... good it is. I'm sure once the network gets a little more saturated the speeds won't be as good, but still, having 10-12mbps everywhere on VZW is quite different from having 3G in most places and 4G in a few select places like I'm used to now with Sprint.
I'm not saying I'm going to switch back to VZW... I hated the way they nickel-and-dimed everything... I like Sprint as a company much better. I just hope maybe they'll at least increase the back-end WiMAX speeds a little so they can be a bit more competitive with VZW LTE at least with speeds (I know the penetration isn't going to get much better...)
I will never go back to verizon for any reason. I don't really download that much on my phone that I can't do when I have wifi. Since having 4g on pretty much kills the battery, I leave it off most of the time. I love the evo, and if sprint improves things then it's even better.
same here, i have had them both, but sprint has been the best company for me. and where i work i roam the WHOLE time . but when the end of the month comes and that bill is in front of me i remember why im here!! o and of course the EVO !!! FTW

Sprint better buy clearwire out...not looking good

http://phandroid.com/2011/04/14/analyst-sprint-must-buy-clearwire-or-move-on-without-them/
I agree I've had a 4g device for almost a year now with 4g not even driving distance away...I have to travel about a little over an hour, maybe a little more, to get 4g in the city, they got to do something or have a backup plan...I don't think the kyoceras working...
I though it was Sprint's plan to move on without them? I read an article a couple weeks ago that a bunch of Sprint execs had resigned from Clearwire's board. This was just before they announced (or at least rumors began) of moving to LTE.
Doesn't surprise me that Verizon will have their 4g reaching more customers in 1 year than we have now.. I love Sprint, but, they are behind at&t/verizon for a reason.
I have had an EVO since launch and only used 4g on a brief trip out of town. It now looks like I will be upgrading to another phone without ever really using 4g on my EVO. That's sad.
I guess people thought VZW was lying when they said they'd have their entire 3G network covered with LTE by 2013.
Same here. On a trip to pa I used in pa in a certain spot for about 5 minutes

its not that big of a deal
Clear has been having LTE tests in AZ and the wimax equipment as I understand it will be super easy to upgrade to LTE - then sprint releases the LTE devices and BOOM LTE is everywhere that WIMax Was..
http://www.clear.com/blog/size-matters/
sprint always tries to bring new tech first...
but always seem to fail in the follow through.
What spectrum was that phoenix testing done on? 2400mhz??
What speeds does Wimax have when there's only 1 user on it?
That video seems very promising considering how those speeds were faster than my Uverse.

That's part of the problem - there isn't much coverage and where there is coverage, quite frankly it sucks. I live in Houston and leave 4g off because the coverage is so spotty.

I would rather have the expanded backend like T-Mobile has, where a normal 3g phone will pull down 5mbps. 21 mbps down is nice but what would I need that bandwidth on a phone. Embedded in a laptop nice, used in the middle of the country where alot of.people don't even have internet access that would be amazing

It is almost embarrassing how many people have not gotten to use their 4g on their Evo. I went to San Diego from Phoenix and I still wasn't even able to find any 4g connection. I've really enjoyed the rom experience with the Evo, but I was really looking forward to the 4g stuff.
Luckily bay area has 4g. It is amazing how just a few years ago dsl was screaming fast now my phone can blow it away.

I agree with this, in my area Sprint consistently pulls about 200-400 kbps down on 3G. A friend with VZW showed me his 3G speed test results - routinely around 1500-1700. If I had speeds like that, I wouldn't ever even want or need 4G.
I like Sprint, but man their 3G is very disappointing. During lunch hour on weekdays, I've seen it drop to nearly 50 kbps. It makes me yearn for the days of blazing fast dialup modems... :/

This is what I used to say about T-Mobile where I live in Utah. I average what your friend is getting on Verizon with Sprint's 3G network here.
Speed test sitting at my desk at work right now (about my average 3G speeds, usually a little higher):

And with a really weak 4G signal:
Further north 4G I can hit up to 6,000-7,000. Not that I ever use it.
EDIT: Interesting that the upload speeds were the same lol

[Q] 1.83 Speed still capped?

Anyone else having random upload speed? I will consistently get 5-6mb down, and for a while was getting 1-2mb up. Now Im back to 300 up, while occasionally jumping to 800.
It does appear to be still capped, but now it is capped at 1.275mbps up. I did have some issues last night with it wanting to limit my spead, but it seems to have sorted itself out. It doesn't matter what I do now, I'm stuck at 1.275 max up.
I had this problem with the telstra radio flash and it is the reason I flashed back..wanted to wait for the official hsupa update. Doesn't sound like the problem is fixed in the official update though. My iphone 4 never had it's upload speed dip like the atrix does.
Please go to your dialer and enter *#*#4636#*#*
Under Phone information what does it say for Network type?
This phone, per Motorola, supports up to 14.4 Mbps (down) under HSDPA. HSDPA is limited to ~350Kbps (up) - Most people do not get these speeds on HSDPA for the reason that your carrier does not support 14.4 Mbps HSDPA everywhere. Different locations will be able to support different categories of HSDPA.
HSUPA is the same deal. Same with HSPA+
Also your signal to the tower will have a factor in the actual speeds you are getting, as well as how congested the networks from your phone to the speed test sites are.
From what I've seen, my local provider AT&T is only allowing HSDPA category 4, whereas the phone supports up to category 10. Unsure about HSUPA as Motorola's website says nothing about HSUPA (and I have not had the update yet). However, Wikipedia shows that the Atrix should support up to Category 6 HSUPA once it is enabled through software, which is 5.76 Mbps - it sounds like your local carriers are capping you at Category 3 or less HSUPA.
If other model phones which should support Category 6 HSUPA in your area are getting consistently low speeds in your area as well, it's just your carrier not supporting higher speeds for anyone, hopefully they will upgrade their network. But if those phones are consistently getting much higher speeds (as they should) then your carrier is still discriminating against the Atrix, and capping it at lower speeds. Submit a BBB or equivalent report against the carrier, email your carrier's executive/corporate offices and complain, do not stand for this. This is unfair.
In the past we had uncapped HSDPA speeds (anything higher than HSDPA was limited - not capped, and not all carriers support the higher speed HSDPA in all areas), anyone who was using HSDPA would have gotten the same speed as us. But if we are being capped based on the model of phone using the same protocol/category network as other phones - THIS is unfair.
I'm with Telstra in Australia using an AT&T Atrix running 4.1.83. I used to get ~300Kbps up, and now get ~1.25Mbps up, which would indicate it is still capped, albeit at a higher rate.

I'm not sure what's not to love on Verizon's LTE?
My upload is often faster than your download on AT&T's "4G" phones.
Download often hits 50+mbps... Get real.
Mmhmm.... and how often do you really ever say to yourself "Man... i'm SO glad i'm getting 50mbps so i could download that file on my phone."? Exactly how much could you POSSIBLY download on your phone that 50mbps is that important? It seems to me more like an e-p*nis extension than a necessity. Hell, i hardly ever really find a need for a 15Mbps connection on my computer, except for the rare times i actually need to download a file that's a couple Gigabytes.
Also have to remember that AT&T doesn't even have their 4G network up yet.
And also have to remember.... if you don't have an Atrix... don't like the Atrix.... or don't even use AT&T...... why the f*ck are you even in the Atrix discussion? i smell some troll's a coming.
edit: Oh... and fsturbo.... i don't know where you get the "crappy voice quality". If that's what you're experiencing... it's more than likely your phone, as many people have discovered. The locked bootloader isn't all that bad, and will probably be cracked sometime soon-ish. And... i'm pretty sure Verizon is also ditching the unlimited data packages in exchange for a tiered platform just like AT&T did.
On another note... you MIGHT want to leave the "i'd rather have unlimited data" arguement to those who uuh... DON'T have unlimited data. I do... and i'm pretty sure there's quite a few here that do, too.

Oh well, our perception of a mobile smart phone is definitely different. I see it as a cable modem in my pocket, always ready to connect to my laptop and tether. If not, EVERYTHING on my phone is snappy, don't have to wait to buffer, or ever use WiFi. And noone is putting limits on how much data I'm gonna be using, or capping my upload speeds.
Per AT&T's PR CES announcement (January 6th 2011), they HAVE their "4G" deployed to ~100% of their footprint. Now, the fact that they call 4G deployed jsut because the software is enable is something the customers should question not me. But if you're happy, I guess it's all good.
And I don't mind Atrix. Not a bad phone. Motorola certainly ain't my favorite but there is no denying that Atrix is a powerful phone. Too bad the network is pulling the whole experience down.
Well.... "powerful phone" and "fast network" are two different sides of the table, really. And i don't recall seeing any statement about their 4G deployment other than that it's only available in a select few cities at this point in time.
And i guess our ideas of a smartphone ARE different then. I've never thought of my phone, be it my previous iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, or current Atrix, as a multimedia device. Rarely ever watch youtube video's on it. Only ever web browse on it when i'm away from my computer and just want to check something quick, or if i'm driving about and need to find a phone number or something of the sort. Don't have a laptop or much of any portable device other than an Archos 70 250GB tablet... so i don't have much of a need to tether, and as i already mentioned... 15Mbps is fast enough for me on my computer. The one convenience feature i really like with the Atrix is the HDMI output. Nice to sometimes pop a video onto my phone to play it on the TV. Then again... my Archos tablet can do the same thing... and has 250GB of storage space.... so even that's a toss up as to which i'd rather use.
So i'd say the network pulling the experience down is arguable. Just about the only thing Verizon has going for them over the Atrix is LTE. If you're not a major speed freak, which i don't imagine makes up the majority of users, then it's not really all that different between the two.
Would be good if someone running the leaked Telstra SBF on a non-AT&T network (preferably Telstra) could post their results. That would confirm that there is something in 4.1.83 that is limiting uploads to ~1.25Mbps.
As I said before, I am using 4.1.83 on an AT&T Atrix on Telstra's network. I know Telstra is capable of much more than 1.25Mbps upload speed, so something on the phone must be limiting it.
yeah, I'm not sure what is going on. Sometimes I can't get above 300kbps upload, and sometimes I get above 1.25Mbps
just before the below test, I got 2.5 Mbps down and 231 kbps up...

To me a bigger argument is what is special about the dual core phone at this point in time? What do you plan on doing on your phone that will absolutely give you amazing experience and speed over your previous Apple products?
And why is that more important to you than AT&T's network that's clearly a bottleneck for the overall user experience in the age where everything depends on the internet latency and network QoS?
