so are our phones considered to have "classic status" now?

How about "The best Android device, ever" Status?
...and "No, you can't have one!" Status, LOL

Hehe
We now have one of the best phones no one can get and in limited numbers. There going to be worth some money especially is we get Android 3.0 first. .

the end of an era!

I don't understand how people can keep thinking this... NO THEY WON'T. It's a phone...not a fully restored '69 Lincoln with suicide doors. If it didn't sell in droves, then there wasn't that much demand for it, and that's why it was cancelled. People aren't suddenly going to be wanting one now that it's sold out on the website. There are phones with similar specs out now, and in 3 months there will be even badder phones out. It's life... deal with it guys.

hey look, my (insert phone here) is the best phone ever because (very specific pro of phone here)!!!!
but really, the n1 is a good phone but its already been out for almost 8 months. a new iphone comes out every year and i doubt apple keeps making the previous model until the last day

i think it has some additional historical value as the first and possibly only "google" phone made

Do to coverage issues I had to switch carriers, and moved to Sprint. The Evo is only a consolation prize and a OK now that Cyanogen is working on it. However I did post up my MINT Nexus on Ebay last night. Hope the people out there get a ravenous .
Missing My Nexus

not sold out
you can still buy the phone from a provider. see the help center link and choose your country....
i don't care if it's sold out or not. I have mine!

So if my N1 craps out then theres nothing I can do to get it replaced? I think I'll be putting it away for selling purposes

Erm. Quick problem with that. Wasn't the G1 the first "google" phone? >_>
And I agree. About the n1 being underrated. In my personal opinion (imo), I think that for a phone to still be on the cutting edge, and still holding its own 8 MONTHS after it came out? That's pretty B.A. In my personal opinion, that is.

It just goes to show how far ahead of the market it was at release!

The sad thing is that the N1 still is the best unlocked phone you can buy in the US. This is the first time I see a phone get canceled before something better comes around. Unbelievable. Better take good care of your N1!

Well, me being on AT&T, the Nexus the best phone I can get! I personally don't want or like the Captivate because of it's UGLY design and being manufactered by Samsung. Everyone thinks that the Nexus was a flop because sales weren't high but, the whole reason it was created was to excel Android OS. All the advertisement it had was just a small ammont of internet ads. In my opinion, it was a success. Before the Nexus, the best phone, hardware wise was the Milestone....

Yep, the sophisticated users quickly bought up the rest because it's a developers dream device and will continue to be to some extent!

Sorry Guys; Nexus One comming Tuesday...

Not that many of you will care seeing that my greatest contribution was the occasional answered question and quip with a slimmer of humor and once or two of Jameson.
I am getting my Nexus One on Tuesday, and will be parting ways with my beloved G1. Hope to see many of you on the other side sooner rather than later. I figured for once I would be on the front end instead of tail end of a technological advancement, and luckily I had the money too(thank you December commission check!).
This is me hating you. I looked forward to some of your posts
I will still stop by on a regular basis. Lots of good stuff and knowledge over here! Plus, what little I can do is help answer questions, and it would get kinda old answering the same n00b questions over and over again for the nexus... how do I root? What does root do? Did I brick? What does my phone not boot past the Hero logo, and just keeps repeating the HTC-->Hero thingy over and over, am I bricked yet or should I try flashing the Hero's SPL and then the Radio from the Droid first?

I am a hardware KB freak myself, but I got to test a N1 for 24 hours and found that I would be able to live. The onscreen is really, really good, and it has the speak to text stuff where all I gotta do is talk and it does the typing, and it does it extremely well!
I have loved my G1 the entire time I have had it! My lady might actually be taking it from me, as long as I flash back to dwang for her(currently running a 2.1 ROM to get ready!).

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, NO!
Don't worry, I will tell you this much... up until the N1, the G1 was the best smart phone I had ever used, from BB 8900, 9700, to HTC Kaiser, Touch Pro, even the Touch Pro 2 did not live up to the G1, IMHO.
I sell cell phones for a living, and like to have a phone that I can use to not just enjoy using myself, but I can tell a customer to go get and they will find equal joy out of it. I used to carry a WM device for myself, then have to explain to everyone why I was selling them a BB... now I have my Android, my carrier has Android, and all is good! I will say, a BB does beat Android for those most hardcore business users that only do email, phone calls, and calendar... but anyone that wants a phone to do multiple solutions, heck move surf the web up the list from where it is with a hardcore business user, and there is no touching Android.
Android, as an OS, is IMHO the top smart phone OS hands down! And don't forget the G1 has damn good hardware... 528mhz CPU is still the gold standard. Sure, not as much RAM as we would all like, but it has a physical KB that is top notch!(one of the best I have ever tried). It has a good camera. It has a capacitive touch screen. Nice looks, IMO. Good battery life(subject to personal use, but just shy of a BB, and way better than any WM device).
Just wait, I am willing to bet money 2.X makes its way to the G1 officially.

Not really... I am a tester for the cell phone company I work for, so I get to test a lot of different phones. As well, when we do decide to carry a phone, I usually get to carry it for a week since I help write tip sheets.
Personally, I have owned a BB Pearl 8110, a BB Curve 8310, a BB Curve 8900, a HTC TyTNII, and a G1.

I will tell you this much, the best times with my TyTNII was when I started running Android on it... so I guess it would have to be the BB 8110! In seriousness, I could type faster on the 8110 than any other phone, hands down. My favorite has been the G1, until the N1 came across my desk, er kiosk... the verdict is still out, a little bit, but I am pretty sure I made the right call for my first brand new and up to date smart phone.

I dont understand though didnt you hear about the Scorpion that's gonna be in new android devices, plus why buy a phone in the beginning of year when you know something way better will be out in less than 4 months. Plus the Shadow and all those other andros will be coming out. I ended up giving mines to my pops he was using a BB-Storm2

There will always be something better in another 4 months... actually, if history repeats itself, the next round of HTC Android will be this June with "mid grades" and then this fall with the "high end" ones. And what are the chances any of those will be for sale at the price of $530, brand new, unlocked, without contract?
Where do you work lucky sir?

Probably... I wouldn't be surprised if google launches a N2 sometime this year, probably with a keyboards, and what not. But for sure, next January there will be a new release of the N1 with better specs.

Eh, if the blogs are right (they've been wrong before) the "N2" is supposed to be the Motorola Shadow. It's not worth it as I have NEVER seen a decent moto-keyboard

I had a question and I'm not sure you could answer it, but maybe someone else could give me a little insight. I'm 14, turning 15 in september, and I saw that at my local t-mobile shop they had a seasonal sales rep job open. Do you think I could grab this for the summer? I would consider myself a phone/xda forums/android/computer addict. (the computer part being since I was 3 thanks to my dad)

When will our Nexii become old news?

Im getting my N1 tommorow, and I feel like regretting it for some reason.. not for "some reason".. just because I feel like it will be old soon.. and after I just got it..
When will our beloved Snapdragon device finnaly become nothing? If there planning on releasing a 2GHz processor for our phones soon, i'd say maybe next year. Though hopefully not..
Other than that, this phone seems to have an incredible lifespan.. the only way I could see a better Android phone coming out is that it has a better processor (as stated above). Or more RAM, of course.. which has already been done.
Really, I just need some reassuring that such a costly device isnt thrown in the garbage simply after a few months. My mommy didn't want to get this for me as is =/
Alas, there is no way to cease innovation.
The hardware on this device is underutilized. The nexus is the snappiest phone out there. With the g1 and mytouch I could feel the lag, but on the nexus the nexus the UI is snappy, I don't know if I need a device faster than the nexus. If Google addresses the software issues I think this phone can become noticeably smoother and better in so many areas. With adequate attention from android this phone can be relevant for years. I think video calls will become pretty standard as will much better camera hardware and that will eventually put the nexus towards the back of the 'superphone' pack. The nexus camera is disappointing but from what I understand it can vastly improve with software updates.
Basically the phone is performing below its capabilities which is exciting but also disconcerting in that there is no dependable indication that Google will address the minor and major issues that make the nexus somewhat disappointing. Only time will tell, the potential is there, we just need to motivate Google.

Resell for $300-$400 and buy the next phone from www.google.com/phone unlocked and off-contract and BAM, back in business.
Google selling phones off-contract = most awesome thing ever. It's sure to shake up the US mobile industry.

I didn't know/think someone would buy the phone for such a price with it being outdated at the time of selling. Guess it doesn't matter though, I will use your advice.
And thanks for the thorough post Maverick, your typing did not go to waste - I read it all. Didn't know the Nexus was performing under expectations - or not being fully utilized. Quite exciting, actually. Can't wait to see what the future holds for this device.

Oh trust me, people are definitely willing. Especially people that don't follow tech news.... Muwhahahahah!
Case in point, I sold my G1 last month for $160. I posted on here about it and others said they sold it for $200+. The kicker is that I got mine for $99 on Amazon, so after using it for 10 months, I even made a profit
Considering here in Australia, the best android phone you can get is a Hero, my nexus one is going to be top of the pack for some time, the best thing that has been annouced here will be the desire in april. But the specs are nearly similar, and there are pros and cons to sense UI.
This phone will last a while if it is properly supported by android updates.

Paid 50 for my G1 because some stupid guy at work thought that he liked his shadow much better, in January of 2009. Sold my G1 for 200 on craigslist February 17th, made huge profit. Too many ill informed individuals to take advantage of...... I guess it works for me.
That is all actually interesting! As a matter of fact, I have a G1.. I didn't think if selling it for 200$ or more though. I couldn't anyways, its in mint condition.. but I broke the screen. While it is still usable, I doubt anyone would want it. I'll just sell it cheap, lol.
Taking advantage of the not tech savy people, a new way for me to make profit I see.. niceeee...

Protect your screen! With a screen protector ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=618006 ) or a case! My G1 was in 99% perfect condition when I sold it (I dropped it once and the corner was a bit gummed up).
A few bucks on either yields a few hundred when it's time to sell. Worth it, isn't it?
You know what the sad thing is.. I have a case, the perfect case that would've caused the screen not to break.. but I was getting tired of having a case on all the time, and a few weeks, or days, after I removed the case - I dropped the phone face down - and that was the end of it =/ I would've been devastated if I knew I wasn't get my N1 anytime soon.
I learned my lesson though.. the hard way.

The software is horrible, but the hardware is pretty good. The iPhone is popular because it's easy to learn and has more apps than any other OS. Oh, and guess what's in the iPhone. A Samsung processor.
No matter what Apple comes out with I will never get another one of their products. The thing that really sets Android from iOS and the iPhone is there is only 1 phone with iOS and there have been over 40 released android phones with atleast 12 more confirmed to be released and over 10 rumored phones.
I still believe that Android will out sale iPhone no matter where it goes.
Apple provides no freedom to its subscribers other than the reveled "App Store" that's about as varietal as it gets for them. No alternate phones to use, no alternate homescreen, GUI (unless jailbroken i suppose) just the same tried nd true iphone with a faeclift and some hardware changes from time to time some for the better, some for the worse lol. I love their PC's nd laptops but i will NEVER own an iphone.
If anyone here really has that big of a boner for the Iphone4 I'd be really suprised. It's not a bad phone but I just hate apple, and it doesn't do anything that the EVO or any other phone coming out can't do. I'd take an EVO over that any day. I'm android from here on out.
This video sums up this entire thread lol!!!
http://www.break.com/index/iphone-4-vs-htc-evo.html
Its still the same iPhone4 just a new radio. As the Android Phones continue to evolve it will still be what is out right now.
I work with a bunch of people who all have Iphone's and talk amongst each other and it kills me, I think it's safe to say I'm an android snob. One could say that I think I'm better for owning an android phone and having it rooted. I might argue at first, but honestly I can't help it. Apple to me is like owning a prius, and Android is like owning ****ing Optimus Prime.

Haha optimus prime. I actually have him as my lockscreen just cause i feel that exact same way. I wouldn't be surprised if I woke up in the middle of the night to find my phone in the backyard having a meeting with all the other local android phones on how they are gonna get rid of the iphones.
But seriously, I too feel the same way, I'm a college student and everyone rich kid and their parents have an iphone and think that they are so cool. All i can think when i see them, is my phone is better than yours. And i have a hero! a phone that in the rapid pace phone world, is obsolete.

And yet, i agree with this. While i would never own an iphone willingly, i do have a macbook and i couldn't be happier with it. I can do anything i want on it and it never fails me. No crashes, no freezing, no viruses. Nothing. Its solid.
But at the same time, i don't carry it around with me everywhere so everyone can see my macbook. I don't go sit in coffee shops just to surf the internet. I chose a macbook not cause it's the cool thing to have, but because I believed it was the best choice i could make. So I'm not an apple hater, I just think that if I'm spending a considerable amount of money on a tech device, it better work to its complete and full potential.

i used to hate android when it first came out, that's when winmo was the hot seller back in 2007-2008. yes it is the most popular os out there "right now" but im sure something will trump android in the near future. what im waiting to see is the next webos device.
If the iPhone was available for Sprint.... I would buy it. The only reason I didn't get one in the first place is because AT&T makes you pay out the ass every month. The iPhone 4 is the best phone on the market right now. The only downside to iPhone is that you can't customize it as well as Android, but... you can put Android on the iPhone! Again, the iPhone is the best phone you can buy right now.
The way it looks now, HTC, Motorola, and maybe even Samsung and LG are going to all be putting out phones that will be directly competing with not only the iPhone, but each other also. That's cool that Apple busts out hardware that puts all these companies in there place for a minute, but on the software sides of things, I'll take Android any day. The nonstop onslaught of Android phones coming out makes me think the Iphone4 won't be on top hardware wise for very long. They seem to be up against almost every phone manufacturer now.

Didn't think I've EVER see anyone say this on xda forums. But to each his own.
Still, !!

Nexus S stands for sucky!!!!!

When I saw a picture of the Nexus S, I thought, what a ugly phone. Then, I saw that it's made by Samsung, nothing against Samsung but to me their phones are cheap The phone doesn't deserve the Nexus name. IMO HTC makes the best phones. I have three friends that have Galaxy S's, and their always asking me for my N1, to use my navigation, and make phone calls, because they're always losing their signal, and their GPS is screwy, plus they have ****ty battery life, so they live on their chargers. I keep telling them to root, but they want me to do it for them, I stopped rooting peoples phones who refuse to educate themselves about rooting, because they're always calling you with problems, because they don't understand. Another thing, I was thinking about buying the Evo, but my friend has it and the resolution is crap, the colors are dull, almost to the point of transparency, I think HTC focused too much on having the biggest screen, so I won't be buying that crap, I thought that all the high-end android devices after the N1 would blow us out, but have done nothing except confirm that I made the right choice with my Sexy Nexy, so we'll be together a little while longer. I thought the N2 would go in the direction of the Desire look, that's a classy phone, that has a professional look for older gents like myself, I'm very disappointed that Google gave Samsung the contract.

You're a professional guy who needs a classy phone. I get it.
I too despise helping people not as smart as I. It's so monotonous dealing with the simpletons.
Lol! A sore loser. Your nexy is outdated, it belongs to the past. Face it, accept it, move on.

All the time, brother!
Apple 3G ---> Apple 3GS for "speed?"
Nexus One ---> Nexus S for "speed?"
After going from Nexus One to Evo to G2 I have to say that the G2 is the true successor to the Nexus One

Cool story, bro.
it was only a couple of weeks ago when most people on here was up in arms that samsung was rumoured to be making a nexus.
now your all lapping it up. whats happened?
I wanted Vibrant once, but I can consider NS instead, and it's only better!

Maybe it's the rumored Orion CPU which if true will be able to compete with any mobile CPU/GPU through 2012.

hmm yeah that will be it. so samsungs crappy build is no longer a concern.
the "ill never buy a samdung" brigade have scuttled back under there rocks.
Is it possible its something as simple as google wanting to continue use of a amoled screen capable phone for dev. phone purposes? I mean thats one of the main interest points ive noticed when anyone sees my N1. Everyone says "wow the screen is so crisp". Seeing how samsung took amoled away from everyone else just kind of makes sense on googles part if that be the case.
Nothing against HTC, they make great phones but i just wonder if use of amoled is more paramount than most give credit for. Look at it this way, all phone makers can more or less make the same kind of phones hardware wise. Only difference being is samsungs ability to use amoled. Just a thought , nothing more.
i read on here that HTC said the N1 would be thier first and last phone designed for a non carrier and that is why google had to go else where. I'd have prefered motorola, but samsung is an ok 2nd choice. HTC would obviously have been my first but they are out of the question. All i really care about is vanilla android with updates from google, a nice sized screen, good hardware, and a nice design.
the nexus S has all of the above minus the nice design...but it has helped me realize that the design weights a lot more in my purchasing decision than I had previously thought. I dont see myself buying a nexus s if it looks like the leaks orion processor or not

Is the Atrix that Bad?

This is the phone I was waiting to get. Received good reviews at majority of sites.
But reading about all the nightmares on every forums, all the bugs, everyone returning/exchanging it,etc.
I played with one at store for over an hour and it seemed very quick with not too many problems. I liked but its not enough time to see all the problems.
The Bell store here is selling it for $0 now on a contract. That's how desperate they are to get rid of it.
So in 10 days the price was already chopped twice.
Am I really going to have to go thru 5 units to find a decent working one?
I can live with a locked bootloader for now but everyday a new issue seems to be coming up.
It seems like this phone is a year away from being done/updated.
What are the main problems/defects I should check on before exchanging for another to make sure I'm not stuck with a crappy model.
Thanks.
Wished Motorola would get their heads out their asses with all their products.
Come out with something good then they do everything they can to **** it up somehow. You can tell them you'll sell millions of their crappy stock and they still would not unlock the bootloader. That's how seriously stupid they are.
btw, I'm actually a Motorola shareholder. Thankfully Motorola Solutions is not a complete loser.
I came from a captivate and Nexus one. I dont have any glaring issues - theres ALWAYS *****ing for every phone whenever its released. Take everything you read on forums with a grain of salt.
I've never had one issue with mine. People just like to ***** no matter how great the device is.

I have had ZERO problems with my phone out of the box. Same goes for 2 other people I know personally.
One just doesn't like Blur.
My brother used it as his primary computer since he got it and can't stop extolling the virtues of Webtop.
He's an IT professional and coordinated a 13+ site migration from one network to another ALL from the Laptop dock.
Some of the sites he was at didn't have wifi so he was using webtop over AT&T for his ONLY connection.
Said he spent more time trouble shooting his laptop the one day he forgot the charger for the Laptop Dock then he spent troubleshooting the phone or laptop dock for the entire 2 weeks.
If citrix is a big part of your life this phone could revolutionize your life.
No problems here. I haven't experienced any bugs except for the touch screen wigging out after a 12 second hold in one place.
It is a little disconcerting that Bell has decided to drop the price only a few weeks into launch. I hope the community stays strong because I intend on keeping it.
Ditto for me -- I'm using an unlocked AT&T version on Rogers network in Canada --- absolutely LOVE the phone. Came from a Galaxy-S, Captivate, and iPhone 4 before that.
This is the best one by far, and the best android implementation so far for me.
$0 on contract!?! holy ****. just get it!

andy2na and captaincanada84 are right, some people will ***** just to *****. With that said, I have done my fair share of "complaining" but it's based on my opinion. You really can't go to a forum and ask people if you should buy something because you are going to get both sides of the fence. Just browse the forum and pay attention to what people are praising about and what people are complaining about and try to decide from that. It's really going to come down to YOUR preference.
I love my atrix.
My only problem is the facebook contact sync because of moto blur, I am having some issues with it not updating my contacts pictures.
Battery life is awesome I am sometimes in disbelief how long the battery lasts 1 day + with everything on and actually using the phone which is a must..
My phone doesn't randomly reboot I don't know about other people.
As for the locked bootloader I'm not in a rush. I have launcher pro and root so thats all I need.
Previous phones. G1, Nexus one, Dell Streak.
Dude what Bell store is that? It's still $69.95 on the Bell site.
You just need to remember that nobody goes to a forum to state that everything is working perfectly, they only post when they have a problem. So, you have to keep that in mind.
I've been running my Atrix since it was first released and it's been very stable. My only issue is it seems to not like my AT&T microcell too much. I get dropped connections when on my microcell. Works fine eveywhere else. It's a huge improvement over my Nexus 1.
Also think about how many people are using the phone that don't read forums... So far I am extremely happy with this phone. I usually hate upgrading because there is always another phone better right around the corner, but you'll find yourself waiting forever in that case. My only dislike is the facebook integration in blur breaking contact syncing.

Yes, please tell. I know a lot of people looking for an Atrix right now and would kill for that. If I weren't on a great retention rate plan with Rogers I'd get that in a heartbeat.
Thanks for replies everyone.
I think a lot of the negativity is people trying to trash a new device or envy. Plus it gets popular to trash any locked phone these days.
I've been waiting to get this phone since it was announced. The 4" screen seems perfect in size. Had no problem looking at the pentile graphics.
Its just scary to see the price drop so fast, it rarely happens here in Canada unless something is a super flop like the Samsung Tab, idk.
But I'm mostly going to get it in a few days and hopefully there's a good future with it and developers on here. Always learn something new. Some people are just to lazy to play around with the phone to get the max out of it.
How is the overheating? It seemed rather warm at the store.

It was in a Bell store in London Ontario.
Dude at Future Shop said he'd be match the 0$ too.
Makes me think twice when stores do that compared to whinny kids on forums because money talks and its obviously not selling that well.

Yea I asked Bell why the price drop to $69.95 and they said "because we like to give our customers a discount", which is total BS, but it's not like they're going to flat out tell me the device is a flop.
If you want to pick it up I would suggest getting it soon because according to the Bell reps I talked to the sale ends on March 31st.

Patience All devices are judged pretty harshly at the beginning.. You just got to reap from the benefits with a slashed price!
I'm completely happy with mine- it's fast, the screen is beautiful and it's got more internal storage than I need. If you're not a fan of motoblur, gingerblur will make you happy!
Go ahead and take the plunge.

Its hard to believe they'll put it back to the original price after the "sale" with all the new other smartphones coming but who knows.
More worried about Bell taking forever with updates. This with 2.3 and then 2.4 will just scream.
i love this phone to death.
best phone i have ever had.
The ability to turn into a PC is the biggest plus. This phone has so much potential. Honestly what motorola does with the bootloader and such sucks, but so long as we can at least root/sideload, personally, I am completely fine with that.
Motorola also stated that every one of their phones in the future will have webtop. So I will be sticking with motorola android phones (specially once Tegra 3D comes out) for a while until a better company has a similar PC like feature embedded on the phone. Can't go wrong with the powerful atrix! Emulators and games run SO smooth... love it.
