Screen Keyboard.... - Droid X General

Will I get used to the keyboard on the screen??? I purchased an X yesterday, but wont receive it until 7/27... so they say.
So I went to the Verizon store to try it out... I had heard that the keyboard screen was easy to use... hmmm..
Not sure if its just me... but not one word did I type without errors... couldn't hit the keys right.
I hope some of you that are using the X now... will confirm that I should get used to it...
Please share...
THANKS!

I came from an iphone and now use swype! Switch to it under settings and you will never go back. Its truly a great innovation! Just b a bit patient and u will learn to love it!

I switched from front- facing keyboard, and I it took some getting used to. Mainly I kept over-reaching the keys. It got better pretty quickly. Ultimately hard keys will always be better, but modern virtual keyboards, like on the DX's, make the trade-off for more screen space worth while.
You may also want to consider the voice-to-text input available on Android. I tend to just use the keyboards, but it's good to have the option.

download and install the high res HTC_IME keyboard, it will be just like the eris keyboard, and can change from the qwerty to the regular one. Requires no hacking Works perfect for me! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416

If you were disappointed once, do you come back again?

Ok my fellow nexus one lovers... I had a Nexus one for about a month, and upon first opening the phone, there was dust, so I immediately got a replacement. I thought it was cool that next day when I show up at work, they had sent me my replacement so I was quite suprised on the service. Anyways, the phone was great, loved every aspect EXCEPT when texting, it wouldn't register my delete, and instead, a stupid smiley... in a way, I was getting pissed cause google was "smiling" at me when I was trying to do something else.
So my question is, I really want to go back, or wait for the HD2, but I feel the nexus is a better fit, especially when I use almost all the google features... but the texting/screen issue is a factor... I know people all over have this issue, and there isn't a resolution yet (that I've found) so what do I do? Wait? Suck it up and get it again? What are your suggestions???

It took me 3 phones to get all my issues fixed. If you're worried about fast customer service, get a phone that is supported directly by a carrier (Mytouch3g, droid, etc).
I have a good friend who just got a droid after being a huge crackberry fan. He loves it.
The nexus one is a pilot program so there will be growing pains to endure.
In terms of the touch issues watch your other fingers around the edge of the touch screen. I notice whenever my screen goes wonky a finger that shouldn't be touching the screen is.
Keep in mind you can get other keyboards than the stock that are agruably better anyway.
Good luck and thanks for supporting Android.
Didnt realize you were talking about screen issues, since using Cyanogen I havent expierenced them, but I dont know if they've been fixed for regular users.
hmm I didn't pay any attention to it after I rooted/flashed cyanogen... guess I'm going to have to think about this one a little bit. but overall I loved it. Do you guys think it will be fixed.... someday?
Well its an issue that theyve been made well aware of on their support forums so I would assume theyre working on a solution, I dont know why they wouldnt be.
just curious, but are you using the stock keyboard?
No, im using better keyboard right now and use smart keyboard and swype from time to time, just like to mix things up every once in a while, I type so fast on this thing now that smart keyboard and better keyboard have pretty much made swype useless to me. Smart Keyboard is free in the market and Better Keyboard is like 2 bucks and is pretty similar but is theme-able which I like. I also dont use auto correct or suggestions or any of that stuff so I dont know how they work for those.

Smart Keyboard and Better Keyboard are really just the stock keyboard with minor differences and more customization (but nothing innovational), if you really want to enjoy your typing experience - I suggest installing the HTC_IME, the typing creation cooked up by HTC for their Sense UI phones.
Nothing really beats it, I don't see how anything could. Swype though, is lovely.
I still feel like I type faster on smart or better keyboard, it could be I just havent gotten used to HTC IME yet, i used it all the time on my mytouch but ive just gotten so use to these keyboards that I dont even have to look to type, like typing this whole thing for example. I guess in the end its all just personal preference.
whats the "htc ime" ? link? seems interesting

So Just ordered my Vibrant but i have Q's

1.Hows the battery life? How long will it last with music and internet. Basically heavy usage.
2.Hows TouchWiz? Laggy? Fast? Finger friendly?
3.I understand root just came out but what can you really do with it at the moment.
4.hows the camera? Is it good? bad? Average?
5. Multitouch On kb outta the box? iFail KB status? Or G1 status?
6. What comes in the box? Accesories?
Thanks! My first powerhouse phone so im a little nervous.
2. TouchWiz 3.0 is a huge improvement from its previous version. It doesn't seem that bad anymore but can be replaced (at least the home screens) with ADW Launcher or LauncherPro (your choice). Fully removed when custom ROMs are available.
3. Root came out before the phone was released, takes <2 minutes to do. What can we do?
- Remove bloatware (A lot of apps such as Kindle, MobiTV, etc are NOT THE APPLICATIONS but an application that tells you to download the app from them market -- some are also subscription based so they are advertisements).
- Access to apps that require root access such as (SetCPU, Root Manager, Titanium Backup, and many more)
~ Custom ROMs are probably not too long from now. Recovery is in beta stages and CM6 is being worked on.
4. Camera is really good.. people exaggerate that there isn't night mode but it isn't needed. AndroidSPIN did a really good article about this located here: http://androidspin.com/2010/07/23/samsung-vibrants-camera-why-you-will-love-it/
Nightmode: http://www.tmonews.com/2010/07/is-the-samsung-vibrant-night-mode-a-worthwhile-replacement-to-flash/
5. kb? Phone has multi-touch on stock.
6. Includes:
* Samsung Vibrant phone
* Alternative battery cover
* Battery & charger
* USB Cable
* SIM card
* Stereo headset
* Start guide
* Terms & conditions
Video of unboxing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xirQWMInFIQ
Thanks Dude! Well im not nervous anymore. Im acctually excited now
zephiK kinda skipped over #1 so I figured I'd chime in a bit. Battery life isn't the greatest, but it does last me all day and that's really all I care about. GPS (Google Maps Navigation) seems to drain it a lot, otherwise it's really good on power. Although if you're doing music and internet, I'd give it about 3 or 4 hours. We should get better life though once CM6 is out.
@zephiK, which keyboard is MT? I've tried all the stock ones and even some downloaded ones and haven't found any to be MT. Is there a secret I'm missing out on?

I skipped #1 because I wasn't 100% too sure about it yet.
Droid X's keyboard is multi touch: http://www.androidguys.com/2010/06/25/droid-xs-multitouch-keyboard-ported-21-phones/
I haven't tried it myself because I'm addicted to Swype.
I am getting much more than 3 to 4 hours. More like double that, and I've been out of work all week texting browsing and gaming. I also question if we'll se more b battery life with cyanogen's rom. The evo is getting less than stock (though cyanogen recently found whatever was eating the battery).
Buy the phone. It is amazing.
Yeah, I heard it had been ported but I think there was supposed to be a problem where the text on the keys was too small. Oh well I'm gonna try it anyway. Thanks for the link!

I just decided to test this keyboard as well and the text on the keys are extremely small. I have been trying to find a great onscreen keyboard. I am coming from the G1, so I almost never used the onscreen keyboard prior so it is new to me.
I loved the Samsung keyboard, especially the button layout/size, but in the end I could not put up with it. So I am still using Better Keyboard. It would be nice to put the Samsung and Better Keyboard together.

keyboard issues any1 ?

not every input on the hardware keyboard is recognized & I know this is an issue with the epic as I've read quite a few folks experiencing it around the web but I'm curious if any1 who frequents this site has it & maybe found a fix or something. its a real p.i.t.a having to constanty fix what I'm typing because of this issue. epic #2 because of this not trying to make it #3 to only happen again
+1 I have the same issue. No solution that I know of, maybe we are just too fast for it. LOL, hopefully we will wee a fix when the developer ROMs start coming out. I don't know. On a similar note, the spelling correction doesn't happen for me either. And I have the rocking screen. Although I'm not worried enough about any of that to get it swapped for a new one.
I am having the same issue... every now and then the keyboard doesn't recognize certain inputs especially hen you start typing pretty quickly on it...
BTW I typed when not hen just showing it is doing it now haha.
I use smart keyboard pro to allow the text prediction and edit to occur.
Hope this is a software issue not faulty keyboard...tried to take it in to sprint and the only thing they said they would do was do hard reset on the device and wipe all data.... ya that wouldn't do crap

I thought it was just me typing too fast. It seems like it doesn't register when two keys are hit too closely together
I actually noticed that when typing really fast, sometime the keyboard freezes up.
It SEEMS like its because the keyboard registers a button long press, because the phone opens up the little addition letters popup.
Either way its really annoying because I don't use any of the additional long press symbols! I'm hoping when custom roms are created, they can remove the button long press menu!
I think you guys should write down what buttons exactly aren't registering. If you all have the same issues with the same buttons, then its probably a fixable issue - or its hardware. If its issues with different buttons, then its probably going to be harder to fix.
it really isn't any certain buttons its just once you get to typing pretty fast it just can't keep up and will RANDOMLY miss letters... so my report would be that it isn't any certain letters at all just dependent on how fast your typing...
Another thing is that sometimes it isnt just when typing fast it happens as well when I'm typing slow

exactly .. and its annoying !
I'm fairly confident it's a hardware problem because if I press the buttons firmly (not hard but firm if that makes sense) it will register the letters regardless of how fast I type.
Yup, I've experienced this as well. It's annoying but not a dealbreaker, yet.
I feel like tipping my hat into this topic. I just switched from AT&T to Sprint, got the Epic, been a happy camper thus far. I have noticed the same exact keyboard issue, and I've noticed that it isn't getting as much coverage as it should be.
With my epic, it's COMPLETELY RANDOM. It'll happen 500 times in one sentence, and sometimes, it won't happen for an entire hour. It doesn't seem to be a hardware issue, because no matter how slow I type, or how firm I press down on the keys, the problem will rear it's ugly head.
I'll wait this out until the end of the 30 days. On the 29th day, if nothing's been done, via Sprint/Samsung or XDA, I shall swap for an Evo.
I use the keyboard constantly and have never experienced this.
I do routinely experience *extra* keypresses because of my giant fingers.

same here... had my epic since launch and never had or even heard of this issue until now...
I do however have issue w/ the onscreen keyboards auto correction feature and the fact that i can be difficult to go back and edit w/o arrow keys... but thats my gripe w/ swype... not the epic ... lol
Then I'm guessing its worth it to get a swap since not everyone is having this issue.

I would consider it a defect and as I use the keyboard pretty much exclusively for typing (I still can't figure out how the heck anybody uses a virtual keyboard - that's why I bought the Epic), I would definitely return it if I had any issues with the keyboard that I thought were caused by either a hardware or a software bug. If the second one I got was the same, I would return it again and get a different phone entirely, on a different carrier if necessary. That's how important I consider the keyboard.

Unfortunately, I have only two choices where I live now. Verizon or Sprint. And seeing as Verizon made me famous on the internet, I won't be going back to them anytime soon. Plus, their only good, keyboarded Android phone, the Droid 2, has the same crappy-feeling keyboard, and Motoblur/eFuse is the dealbreaker. (I do hold high hopes for the enV touch 2/enV Pro or whatever they're calling it, as the voyager form-factor is pretty neat, and the keyboard was actually decent)
Sprint seems to be batting a thousand when it comes to good Android phones. Not to mention their service is cheap and effective here.
Plus, not all bad. I think an Evo + Better Keyboard would be SWEET.
I'm actually having the same keyboard problem, where it misses a LOT of keypresses (depending on how fast I type). Is it really a defect in the phone?
I am having this, too, but I it seems like not everyone is. Guess it's going back to Sprint tomorrow.
5 phones since launch day ... all swapped for brand new ones because all have the issue. some weren't as bad as the others and since getting #5 a few days ago I seem to only have had it happen a few times .. folks claiming not to have it do u use the physical keyboard or swype for majority of inputs ? maybe ya just don't notice lol

Like I said, I use the physical keyboard exclusively. Never had this issue. I use it for searches, texts, personal emails, even business emails to customers. And I type fast enough that when Samsung put out that "world record" commercial with the guy using Swype a while back, I was like "that's supposed to be fast?"
I wonder if there is some service or app that is interfering with the keyboard on some of you guys' phones; something that's taking over the whole system for a half second every once in a while.

In south Africa. No paid apps in the market. Downloaded mymarket. Can find 8pen but when I click install nothing happens. Mymarket works perfectly for free apps. I am willing to pay for 8pen. Any advice?
Wow that looks just terrible. Typing a single letter with that takes like 10 times more time compared to a qwerty keyboard. It might be less error prone when you get used to it but it's still slow as hell.

Suggest you email dev and he may allow you to purchase via PayPal and send you the app. Problem with that is you always have to check his official app site and remind him to email you any update released. I purchased a To Do app called DueToday like that, oh, and also Tasker in a similar manner. Sucks but what can we do?
BlindType looked so promising and I was waiting for it to get released. Then Google bought the company out! So you'll definitely most likely see BlindType as default keyboard on Gingerbread (Android 3.0)...conjecture...

The same here, I think it will take a very long time to learn this. I use swype at the moment, but I will give it a try.
I will post my findings.
Thanks! They are not coping with their response so that wont happen soon.
I like the idea of an inputmethod that does not involve pressing small keys, but what about lanscape mode? i've got swype and it works great, and if i want to type even faster, i can just go to landscape mode, and i bet landscape mode isn't gonna be easy to use on the 8pen keyboard, which makes it difficult when typing long texts, i don't think this little program is going to have a promising future...
I am using it now and it is very difficult. Swype is much faster.
It is horrible, try it yourself!
I tried it and although I was excited about it at first, it's not a very pleasant experience. It takes too long to spell words and you have to learn a keyboard all over again. Layout could have been better I think. I am not fan of swype, but I think that is a much better experience. This is better than the WinMo6 small keyboards, but nothing compared to the keyboards found in any Android, WP7 and iOS device.
Tried it, wanted to like it, didn't like it.
Uninstalled and refunded.

i have sweaty palm and i live in humid and hot climate. dragging finger across the screen is just nightmare for me any type of input similar to 8pen or swype never work since sweaty finger just create enough drag to really make the finger almost stuck. Normal input work much better.
Same principal as in "letter board" for people who lost their speech like stroke patients
20:50 First forum post using 8pen.
I have always struggled with a qwerty keyboard & I can't find swype on the android market.
perhaps I can get use to this.
I will see how it goes.

Swype - I used to love you

Hi! Is it just me or has swype become almost unuseable since a few ROMs back when it went from popping a box up to horizontal suggestions above the keyboard.
I'm not talking about the aesthetics, it seems as though the dictionary selection, accuracy and changing of half typed and corrected words is just terrible.
Prior to the update I used to breeze through, now I'm lucky to swype in a few words without an epic correction struggle against its will to correct and change.
Swype, once a selling point and a joy to use now just plain sucks for me, and the thought of using it turns me off productive tasks.
Just me? Bad settings? I look forward to peoples input. I can't exactly remember when the change occurred, it was when it went horizontal instead of pop up.

I don't intend to hijack, but I couldn't have an android phone without Swiftkey X on it... only complaint is that I have to use the gmail app for my email instead of the Samsung email one because it is very buggy on the Samsung one....
Same here. Old swype was more accurate.
I did two things:
1) Remove swype that comes with the rom, install the beta from swype.com (its newer)
2) Disable autocorrect
I absolutely love the new one. Much better than before and just as accurate.
The new Swype rocks! Especially with the horizontal word choice window. I can't even consider going back to 2.7. No problems with accuracy whatsoever with the new version on my phone.
It's not just me! Latest Cognition 1.50 just released and Swype has been reverted to 2.x, Designgears said the following:
"I think the new versions suck too, it is no even usable anymore, I can type my message 3x faster with the stock samsung keyboard."

Quit the bull - if you didn't mean to hijack, why are you doing it? Is this an accidental hijack? Jerk.
On topic - never been a huge Swype fan, but been playing with it a bit this weekend - and I concur with those that say the new version is hopeless.
Still a noob with it, but my accuracy was much, much better on the old version.
Not sure I'll stay with Swype anyway - old dog, new tricks....
Make sure you check your Swype accuracy settings. I put mine closer towards the error tolerance end now. Still works fine.

I don't like it that much, have to swipe twice/thrice for a simple word like 'or'. I used T9 Trace on my S8500 before and it never had any problem, even if I swiped on some wrong letters it ultimately gave me the right word.
I am on 2.72 version, at default setting.
Regards.
Yep same here. Spent more time struggling with auto-correction than actually swyping.
I use TouchPal's keyboard now. Surprisingly accurate even when you mash the wrong buttons, high degree of customisability (you can even use the classic numpad keyboard), and they will also be implementing the swyping functionality in the next major release (hopefully more usable than the current version of Swype).
I've found, disabling auto correction helps a million.

I absolutely agree with every word you said. Please if someone can tell me a way of downgrading to an older version, i will be ever grateful. Its terrible now!!
from my perspective.. swype 3 is better than swype 2 .. well the horizontal word suggestions eats up a line, but in exchange it's easier to scroll down (or right ) for the words.. it's true that it's not perfect when selecting words.. but overall.. it's still the best keyboard...

How do you disable Auto Correction? Can't find it in settings!
Swype 3 beta says you can't install it on a phone that was shipped with swype pre installed. Anyway to get the new 3 beta of swype on official firmware?
Is there any way to downgrade though?
