Dell Streak worth it? Is it any good? - Streak 5 General

I've just seen that i can get the Streak for £60 with a £30 a month contract on O2. I'm very tempted... but is it worth it? What don't you like about the phone, what do you love about it?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated
Cheers!

Naw... its a terrible phone and no one here would ever buy one
What dont I like about it? EVERYTHING
What do I love about it? NOTHING
Might as well get a locked down iPhone am I right?

I did that very deal,
As to whether I love it or not, well that's a tricky one, but easily demonstrated by the realisation that I haven't touched my hd2 Since... and those who know me will know how much Time I used to put into hacking that one..
The one review of the streak summed it up for me perfectly;
It has its foibles, its never going to be mainstream, it could easily become a classic, and if you're The kind of geek who likes experimenting, tinkering and improving things then this is the device to have.
be aware its more pda than phone though... it works fine as a phone, but its not its primary function..
Almost polar opposite to MS and their stooped winmoan 7 philosophy....
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk
Edit, I should also point out that I rarely use my laptop at home anymore...unless its attached to the streak and I'm running a adb shell investigating how it works...

I'm not entirely sure what you're getting at?
I've been using android phones ever since the G1 was first released and i'm thinking about getting the Streak, I was just curious as to what it's pros and cons are.

Haha, it definitely sounds like my kind of phone
I still have my Nexus, so i guess if the Streak seems a bit too big for me to take to the pub i can take my nexus out instead
Although, from what i've seen that doesn't seem to be a problem.
Thanks for your help!

I picked one up on the O2 deal for £35 a month and nothing to pay on Friday so have had a weekend of playing with it.
What do I like? I LOVE the big screen and I love Android. It's so much smoother and faster than WinMo. I don't care it's running 1.6 as I know Dell are spending time on making sure that 2.1 works properly for us. Aren't you Dellboys?!
I was using an HTC Touch Pro 2 until I got the Streak. The TP2's still got my old sim in (waiting for a PAC code) I have hardly touched it since getting the Streak - and every time I pick up the TP2 it feels like a slow clunky toy in comparison! (and winmo keeps crashing...). Interestingly the Streak is the easiest 'phone' I've ever connected to via USB on my laptop - it connects straight away every time (unlike WinMo!)
The Streak is really nicely engineered - it feels well made and looks it too, it's very comfortable and easy to use in both landscape and portrait mode.
The only real problem I've had is finding a decent calendar program (still searching) and I thought my camera button didn't work, but you have to press it hard to activate the camera, then it focuses with a little halfway press and you have to press it harder again to take a pic.
As I primarily use the Streak as a PDA, browser, music player and ebook reader - the phone function is almost secondary for me although I text a lot. I'm having a few problems adapting to the keyboard although I do like the numberpad that everyone else seems to hate!! I'd recommend Swype or SlideIT as they offer a way faster way to type than pecking one key at a time.
I am really impressed with my Streak - I'd say it passed my expectations by about a mile. I think it is a brilliant piece of design, it's fast, it does everything I want and there's loads of free and cheap software - what else is there?!
I guess I'd better update my signature!!

Try calwidget or pure calendar widget they are awesome. Ive been using Calwidget since the day it came out. from G1 to Mytouch to Nexus one and it will be on my streak as well (if it comes out for TMO)

don't forget we expect you to get involved in hacking it then as soon as you get your grubby mits on one
I'm learning rapidly (although I do have a background in *nix) but I'm still way over my head at the mo..
adn louder volume fix through the speaker would be good (if possible)
RE: the size as long as you don't keep it in a pocket that will put pressure on it(like any 3"+device) such as a jeans pocket, then it should be fine at the pub.. although obviously you may lose friends when they get fed up with you playing with it all the time...
if you're in manc then nip and get one of those cheap cases from superetrader, they work fine..

If mine broke today I would go and get one tomorrow, if you are getting it from o2 I was reading that they now have a 32 gig one but I don't know if that is on contract, the article just said o2 were selling a 32 gig for £449
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App

I recently purchased the Texas beta device and plan on purchasing the American unlocked device when Dell releases it (if hardware change is major). I really hope some great ROM development comes to the phone and I will be hooked until WP7.
But really, it all depends on personal opinion for any device that is 'worth it'
.

I think most people who have found the Streak disappointing (or just too big) have done so because they bought it as a phone instead of looking at what they really need.
Dell and O2 don't sell it like that - it's a just about pocketable web tablet with secondary phone functionality (think N800/N900 with much better hardware) - hence it being offered with a data only plan.
I bought it on that basis and it works really well at what it was designed for. Perfect screen for lazy eyes, good battery life, good audio, no lag to be seen. Gets used for web/mail/videos/audio round the house, SatNav in the car, and for access to non-corporate stuff at work.
There's no way I'd expect it to replace my main phone (BB 9700), if I did, I'd probably end up smashing it up like that bloke on Modaco.
Shame accessories are so ludicrously expensive but hopefully that will improve after the US release - as will app compatibility once 2.2 comes along.

Thanks for your input everyone.
I am now the proud owner of Dell Streak
Now as soon as O2 activate my account (could take 24 hours ¬_¬) i'll be able to play with it properly. Cheers guys

TAKEN THE FINAL WALK :) Athena has to go

After much huffing and puffing i have finally put the nail in my ATHENA experience for the past 7 months.
I have really enjoyed using it but it just falls short in a few major areas for me to continue.
1.Its just TOO BIG as a phone, its ok when im sat down but at weekends and evenings its just too annoying to carry about, removing the sim is like surgery so i dont want to do that too often
2. Its just TOO SMALL to be a half decent laptop, The browser sucks and how ever much you dress up WM6 its just Not XP!
3. I dont drive a car so GPS means nothing to me
So my missus has kindly given me her LG viewty upgrade as a early xmas pressie and today i finally won a bid on ebay for a black EEE pc so thats that.
The viewty is a cracking phone and it feels really weird to hold something so small again as a phone.
It can teach the athena a few lessons as well.
1. It plays back DIVX PERFECTLY full screen no jumping out of the BOX! why the athena is so crap at this is beyond me.
2.It streams movies and TV much better via ORB .. NO BUFERING!
3.Its compatable with Mobile TV .. SKY FOOTY for £5 here i come. You can even connect it to a TV like the Athena.
Obviously theres loads it cant do but too be honest i feel like i have dropped a burden carrying that thing about
with me.
If i was a regular driver and would use the GPS i would keep it, i dont really use any of the Office apps either.
So up on EBAY it goes , superlight weight LAP top and almost feather like phone here i come

Your contributions on these forums will be missed despite the idiot who posted the previous wasteful and utterly pointless previous comment.. i am considering a move away too and i have a choice of phones to keep and the sale of my Athena will fund my next purchase just waiting for reviews of the shift to see if i want one or not!!! Enjoy the eee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm thinking of trading in my Athena for a Viewty or N95 8gb, but they don't seem to be going for very much. I'd have to supplement my Athena (or rather, Ameo) about 90quid at Cex to get a Viewty.
How much did you get for your Ameo Spacecat?
I am still using the Ameo for mobile internet at which it is great, as a phone it is useless to be honest so I still use the Artemis for voice related stuff.
What I want next is the Touch Cruse as this has everything to die for as far as I am concerned, I have just got the wife a Touch (elf) and its a great bit of kit, add the extras the Touch Cruse has on board and this has to be the best combo unit going.
I very nearly got the Viewty yesterday, but I found the attraction of the Touch better - all I need to do is teach HID to use it! (this could take some time) - Mike

if you are rude after this is a permanent one.
Sold my Ameo tonight.
Traded in a DS Lite and some games to get myself a new handset at Cex. This shop is not my ideal choice, but they offer a warranty that lasts a year and covers the phone being blocked (something that Ebay can't do). This turned out to be fortuitous.
I decided I quite like LG Viewtys (after initially deciding I don't). It was either the Viewty or the N95 8GB. Nothing else really holds a candle - sorry Sony Ericsson but you SUCK for web browsing and you DOUBLE SUCK for video recording quality.
I bought one Viewty, tried to make a phone call: blocked. Manager tested device; definitely blocked.
Second device: blocked
Third: blocked.
Unfortunately a man who turned up after me and immediately before I found out MY phone was blocked managed to obtain the ONLY ONE that WASN'T blocked. I cursed under my breath.
I now have £270 worth of CEX vouchers, valid for a year on any product. I wondered if perhaps someone could offer a suggestion of another handset besides the N95 8GB and Viewty which has....
A good browser
HSDPA
Decent camera with VGA movie recording
Those are my only requirements.
Please don't say the standard N95 - I gave the last one away to my fiance so don't wish to buy another.
Thank you

yes ive looked at that but it will be a long time before Cex have one of those for me to exchange my vouchers for.
Just out of interest, what is it that prevents the possibilty of hacking Vga 30fps capability into some of the newer windows mobile devices?
Is this capability entirely hardware driven?
Cheers Pawel

I went for the N95. I know I had one and I know I gave it away to my fiance, but I kind of missed it....
I've just installed the very latest firmware and I'm super impressed. The camera shutter and processing speed is IMPRESSIVELY improved and therefore much more useful than it once was. There's updated maps software, 30% higher battery life and everything just seems great. To be honest I prefer the reassuring tactility of a keypad to touchscreen impact, and for £100 less than the Viewty I don't think I'm missing out on it.
I will say that on second impression I did really like the Viewty, and if it wasn't for a gang of insurance phone blocking scammers operating in derby I would be using one right now, but maybe it does pay to go back to your old club.
I bought a Nokia N800 yesterday on Ebay for no less than 100 quid. Now with the official upgrade release of OS2008 on this device and the fact that the N95 supports SAP, as does the N800 I'm hoping the two will work together and give me a multimedia combination to rock the Athena's socks off.
someone else had the same idea....

Thinking of switching from Captivate to Streak...

I bought a Samsung Captivate over a Dell Streak a few months ago when I was looking to make the jump to Android (largely because the captivate had 2.1). I was able to overlook the many small issues with the Captivate (including gps probs), but I've already gone through two of them thanks to hardware defects. I'm giving serious thought to switching to the Dell Streak now that 2.2 is out for it, but I wanted to hear some thoughts from you guys since you've all been using it for a while. Are there any major issues plaguing the Streak? How is the GPS? Does it ever encounter any power problems such as the random shutdowns that occur on some of the Galaxy S phones? Is it awkward to hold while talking?
Switching to Android was one of the best things I've ever done, I just wish I had known ahead of time about the hardware probs with the particular phone I chose. I'm stuck with AT&T since I'm on a family plan, so I'm really hoping the Dell would be a better option for me since it's the only other phone they have that compares in terms of features.
Do it, its the best phone u will ever have.

I have to agree.
I've had my streak a little over a month and love it, most this time I've been using Steve's 2.2 which is very usable.
If you can swap, have large pockets and don't mind looking a bit of a fool with what amounts to a brick stuck to your ear then go for it! I personally got for function over fashion and the streak is very functional.
To answer you questions:
*Gps is very fast especially when assisted with 3g/gsm location services.
*Battery life is phenomenal I have wifi and 3g constantly swiching all day whilst polling my server monitoring software every minute (Nagios), have 3 mail boxes being pushed (emails every 10 minutes) as well as playing the odd game, web surfing, Bluetooth (on and off) etc.
*I am a medium business user and rely on my phone to manage my business. I wouldnt swap my phone even if it does resemble a paving slab .
In short if you can, get one.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
+1 to that!
What an incredible device. There really isn't much more I need it to do tbh. Just get your head around the overall size of it (you get used to it very quickly) and you will, I think, really enjoy the experience! Ooo that sounds a bit dodgy dunnit....
I didnt realize how much I missed having working GPS until i switched over to the Streak...
Also, I am not missing the long swipe action required to answer a call.
I have my Streak doing everything I had the Captivate doing with the exception of Flash, which should all be rectified within a couple of weeks with the 2.2 upgrade...
The only regret or pause I have/had was shelling out the 6 bills for the Streak, cuz I don't think the cappy will bring much more than $300 on a good day...
Well another concern I've had is that the Streak doesn't seem to have as large a userbase as the Captivate does. There aren't as many mods and tweaks floating around, not as many options in terms of custom ROMs or support. And (at least here in the states) It seems like no at&t reps or anybody has any clue what the hell it even is. It was only in the last month that Best Buy actually started carrying them in stores, affording me the opportunity to play with one first hand (definitely jealous after that). Do you guys ever feel restricted? Or is it simply that the phone doesn't need as much crap to get around stock appearance/settings?
Oh, and How's Angry Birds on that huge screen, anyhow? =)
I had the Samsung Galaxy S for 2 months now and decided to sell it. The lag issues, poor JIT compiler and still un-released Froyo 2.2 in Australia was driving me nuts.
The version of Froyo I had (JPO) was pretty ordinary, and had to be lag fixed by changing the file system from RFS to EXT4. The only problem with this was the reliability, and I was starting to get errors.
The only bonus I can see with the SGS (including Captivate) is their ability to play DIVx (avi files) straight off the bat, and in any resolution easily. I'm not sure if the DS can do it, by the looks its only WMA/MP4 H.263 files, and no DIVx (same as the Nexus One)
Dell seems to have got their act together with this device. I can't wait to get mine tomorrow.

i have the captivate and hated it before i got my streak and I REALLY Hate it now - Dell's software is TERRIBLE and so is their engineers and support is worse, BUT the hardware WORKS and works WELL and with Steve making the Dell team look down right grade schoolish you can't miss with the Streak.. The only thing i dislike(d) about it was the bluetooth volume on calls (Dell Software Issue again), but Steve has taken care of that also (just Read and Read some more until you get your Steak on 1.4.5) and it will be down right BEASTLY.
Now back to the captivate and samsung - software imperfections can be forgiven and worked out in the future, but hardware problems and LIES from a company telling you they fixed a problem that can only be fixed with a MASSIVE recall is WRONG! At least Dell just won't respond Samsung is contantly coming out with more and more overpriced products like their previous products were something to brag about - Dell stinks, but they seem to at least be putting effort into addressing the Streak's shortcomings before selling us something else (though i will say this in closing - If Not for Steve My Streak surely would have gotten returned 2 weeks ago) oh yeah a lot of ROMS to chose from are cool, but JUST 1 that actually works -PRICELESS!
I just sold my captivate 2 weeks ago to get the streak. Do it. You won't regret it. Everything on the phone just works. Sure its slow out of the box, but I've got DJ_Steve's Rom up and running on it and its awesome. GPS, which did "work" on my captivate is simply perfect on the streak. There just aren't a million, "how to fix your gps" threads here for a reason. When I use the gps I feel like I couldnt get better performance out of a Garmin. For real.
The extra screen real estate is a pleasure to have. Just the extra inch vastly improves web browsing, movies, etc. It is bigger than the average phone out there, but I do not feel at all awkward making a call on it. I don't care. I like the phone so much that wether or not someone thinks I look silly on it does not show up on my radar.
There are no "lag fix" conversations around here either. For a reason. Not needed.
There are no "memory leak" threads either. For a reson. Not needed.
It literally reminds me of someone being in a room for so long and not realizing they were breathing stale air until someone lets them out and they get a breath of fresh air.
The lack of custom roms is refreshing, not having to wade through 50 different roms and then feel like I have to flash every other day to try to fix something that is borked and then have to reinstall all the apps again, sign back into google, restore all my settings on the phone and in apps, etc. I finally feel like I just get to use my phone for what it is, a tool and a toy and not always be looking at it as a project that needs constant improving. Not that flashing a new rom isnt sometimes fun, but DJ_Steve has enough frequent updates and add ons that if I get the itch it seems there will be something available. Also Cyanogenmod will be out for it soon also.
Just do it. Best money spent in a while.

Do you guys ever feel restricted? Or is it simply that the phone doesn't need as much crap to get around stock appearance/settings?
Oh, and How's Angry Birds on that huge screen, anyhow? =)

Angry Birds is the best on the Dell Streak. I love playing it on this phone and it is better than when I had my iphone, captivate, and nexus one.
I totally agree with how you feel about Samsung.
Right on, thanks for the input everybody. As of this moment, Samsung has had my defective Captivate (2nd one, mind you) at the warranty center for "repair" for over a week. Everytime I call for a status update, they quote me an even longer turn around time. Assuming they actually fix anything, it's going straight to ebay once I get it back. Can't wait to make the switch now, my experience with Samsung and their support center has been utterly appalling. I appreciate the recommendations and will definitely be swapping out my xda captivate bookmarks for dell streak ones so I can get back here asap. =)
Oh, hey, one other question.. Are any of you using LauncherPro on the Streak? I've become accustomed to using it and was wondering you can still lock to landscape orientation on the Streak even though LauncherPro locks to Portrait by default when used on other phones with Auto-Rotation disabled?

i use LauncherPro - if you disable auto rotation is will lock in Landscape (i think because the Streak was suppose to be most landscape), but if you enable auto in the preferences it rotates whatever way you want just fine

Nice, that's exactly the answer I was hoping for. Thanks! =)
I hope u make your switch soon. I had the Captivate for a few weeks, and sold it. Loving my Streak with 2.2, nothing better in my opinion.

[Q] Are you returning the phone?

After dealing with all the delays, non-existent support and updates and failed promises to ship the phone with next day shipping, I decided that I had tolerated enough and demanded my money back. Hopefully that is easy.
Here's why Dell Venue Pro sucks:
1. Too big. Usually big is a 'good' thing according to the trend of 2010. However, when it's big but also thick, it reminds me of my iPAQ from 12 years ago. With the Otter Case it gets even worse.
2. Horrible Camera. It's slow to activate unlike the Focus, and it takes blurry pictures even in just slightly dim light. I know that no camera phones can take pictures in dim light well, but DVP's camera is blurry even in a room during the day. My T-Mo G1 can do better than that.
3. No 4G. Just a UI change is not enough to switch phones and pay more per month as I had been using Android, and all the newest droids out there have way faster speeds that can even do video chat.
4. Keyboard is not that well integrated. Turns out the "fn" key and "shift" key are highly unpredictable, since it doesn't have any indicator that it's simply on or locked on. I mistyped more password than I did with the soft keyboard. Therefore, it's not worth the bulk.
5. Thoroughly unhackable. No SD Card slot access. No tethering trick. No screenshot trick.
6. Bottom buttons are capacitive. Looking back, the dev phone was perhaps the only great phone because they have hard buttons for Back, Windows and Search keys. Using touch buttons for these important commands make the OS experience finicky. For example, it's too easy to hit the Bing button accidentally while taking photos. It was also way too easy to got kicked out of a game - and having the resume afterwards makes things worse.
7. No confidence left for Dell Mobility, or even Dell in general: They folded the mobile division already. Their updates for Dell Aero and Dell Streak took months and months to fulfill, so how will the DVP be any different? We had already suffered through the lack of information on shipping, and I would expect firmware updates not to be any different.
8. This thing crashes. Unlike some other users here, mine crashes even when Wifi is off. The crashes are all random and not confined to Marketplace or 3rd party apps. If Dell was not so irresponsible, I would ask for an exchange instead of a return, but this is a dealbreaker to me.
One thing I am glad about it is, I had waited long enough to find out about Samsung's Omnia 8, and probably better phones to come in CES and Mobile World Congress.
Thanks, Dell, for being awful, and ruining what would be a good phone.
I plan on giving Dell one more shot. I've been waiting a week now for my replacement. I'll wait for that replacement (even if it takes another week or two) and if the replacement is unstable or has any other problem then I'll return it and pick another phone.
You are right, this phone could be near perfect. It just seems that Dell rushed it.
I'm in the same boat. I love the phone except a few major problems.
1- WiFi Crashing
2- Bluetooth not staying connected
Below are WP7 issues
3- Cannot sync with Outlook
4-No mass storage
5- Cannot connect to hidden WiFi networks!!!!
I miss cut and past but can live without it I need the rest fixed if I'm going to be able to keep it.

I don't know....my WiFi lags but doesn't crash. My BT is fine. Outlook syncs fine, but I've been syncing cloud stuff fine. Storage, I have 16gigs. Will I use more..who knows or cares. Hidden WiFi...something strange about that. Its hidden for a reason, if dvp could see it, ITT wouldn't be hidden. Seems like homey reasons to quit to me. But then again , you're not me. I got what I expected. Is it 100% perfect? Nope...but I wasn't expecting it to be. I wonder if iphone4 people are returning it because of the alarm...to me the best reason to return a phone is...i don't like it. All other reasons show up on most other phones too... Just my opinion
this phone has more problems now that i think about it. but mines a keeper. i like the windows UI and the look of the dvp. its rare and you cant just buy it at, say, tmobile stores. =D
I love the phone but you know as much as I love it I can't use a phone that doesn't work. When I pay $550 for a phone I think the least it can do is work so as much as it kills me I called them last night and told them I want my money back. I gave them a week or so to see if they would give some responce to the problems posted on the forums but nothing which means they're not going to fix the problems or they're going to be real slow about it. And the whole 30days thing you guys have over here means I cant really wait around to find out so I'll have my money back thanks!
The problems I had with the phone were numerous:
- WiFi crashing constantly
- bluetooth constantly disconnecting from car kit
- 3G signal loss and complete network loss
- white noise in earphones
...and then to top it all off, and this is a WP7 issue more so than a DVP issue - however the marketplace works and because I used my old windows live id to setup the phone, M$ basically still think I'm in Ireland for whatever reason and as a result I can't download any of the good stuff eg: Netflix, LastFM etc... and some apps I download are for european region instead of US and so are completely useless to me.
Anyway all in all I had no choice but to get a refund. Bummer!
This venue pro will be going back for the same reasons which have been found in this post.
1. No 4G. Just a UI change is not enough to switch phones and pay more per month as I had been using Android, and all the newest droids out there have way faster speeds that can even do video chat.

I no longer feel confident with DELL. Furthermore, I dont like how we were treated throughout this launch, especially in a economy when spending 500+ dollars on a item is a luxury. I have purchased phones outright before and have never gone through a process like this.
I wanted to believe that this phone could of been more but if I wait until my 30 days are up I will be s### out of luck. I'll see what CES has up its sleeve.
This venue is definitely going back unless something miraculously happens with DELL or Microsoft regarding the phones OS. I doubt it though.

The phone syncs with Exchange not Outlook, 16GB is good for storage if all you want is music and videos, forget if you want other files and there is no explorer to find files anyways.
My company hides their SSID as many companies do, if you have the settings you can connect and my WM5 phones would connect but I can't with the latest and greatest from MS while people at my company with Android and iPhones connect with no issues.
For the money I spent I wasn't expecting a beta unit because this thing was not ready for primetime.
I'm keeping my 8GB model. I don't have any crashing issues whether or not WiFi is on.
It would be nice if the cam were better and there wasn't some slight hissing through headphones during quiet segments of music, but neither of these are deal breakers to me. Supposedly Dell is working on updating the cam software, but again, not a huge deal to me.
It it going back.
Dell support is no good and rude, most don't even know what the DVP is. Every step of my dealing with dell has been a pain from getting my phone to the 4 hours it took trying to get it activated with the rep from dell who kept trying to get me off the line so he could "call me back."
The phone is very nice but so not worth the hassle. Dell has given me the worst customer service I have ever had, no way in hell I am gonna be stuck dealing with them for the next 2 years.
Mine for some reason would not turn on unless I popped the battery multiple times. Kept losing service on the 2g/3g switch, photos were absolute trash.
I will miss what could of been, but this thing is going back. On to my iPhone.
Thanks To You All
Hi Ladies and Gents
I'm fairly new to these forums and just wanted to say thanks to you all for the great feed back on the DVP!! I'm from Canada, and as you all know we can't get the device up here unless we provide a US address...I've been working around this issue which I finally resolved, and now for the past 2 weeks or so have been going back and forth between the DVP or a Nexxus S. I soooo love the form factor of the DVP, but have decided that it's to risky to take a chance on getting a somewhat flawless device to work up here...it's going to take a lot of time and effort to get either of these devices, so I want to make the correct choice the first time....I to have had issues calling Dell just to try and figure out how to ship the darn thing, and have been bounced around so many times!!! Their CS is garbage...none of them know anything about the device!! I was willing to get it even with the RAM issues and the no multitasking/cut and paste, but all the other issues are just to great of a hurdle to jump. I know the Nexus S has it issues but it being pure Google, I know the support will be there...
Thanks Again for making a very hard decision that much easier, and good luck to you all whether you keep your DVP or send it back!!
Cheers!!

This is not true, there is a symbol next to the (left) battery indicator, an arrow for caps and keep pressing the arrow button for caps lock, the icon changes
same way there is an icon for fn key

Thanks for the tip. I was used to Android where the indicator is right at the cursor.
Already shipped it back in favor of my nexus S. Got tired of the constant crashes and decided I didn't want to be an early adopter of W7

think its interesting, well actually I think its funny really, and anyone on this thread with a long device history on this forum can attest, the actual reasons people give for liking or not liking a device. I extend that comment to the iPhone and nexus brands, as well as others. For example:
Crashes: every phone crashes. Everyone. Read the Engadget review about the crash macine....sorry , the nexus s. they all crash somewhere
..period
Camera: they all suck. If you're using a Dell but expect a Nikon , then your expectation sucks. Some are better, but none are good.
Configuration: don't even sit there and tell me what great configuration schemes Android has. The configuration is just as spacey on those devices too. How easy is it to get hotmail on iPhone? As easy as Google maps on wp7?
Cloud stuff: huh, what? Bottom line is it takes understanding and preparation. Once done, its done. Don't trust the Microsoft cloud, but trust the Google cloud...good luck with that.
Support: did someone sat Google support? I call bull****.
Best reason for returning the Dvp I have read so far is, "I tried the Nexus S, and it worked better for me". Great answer!!! Guy just stood up and said it. Cool. Not some bs answer like WiFi crashing...someone will find you over in some other forum posting about your other new phone crashing ...you know its true.
BTW, I heard the iPhone alarm still doesn't work, and what's this I'm reading about the latest undocumented feature on the Nexus. And the Incredible is doing what?? Droid!!! Great commercials.
I just like my Dell. I like my HD7 too. If you don't,that's fine...just watch the excuses...sorry, I mean reasons.
I want the one with the WiFi and most gb's.
Sorry for the rant...check out the other forums here and see if what I say isn't true!

Classic and spot on! The DVP isn't perfect, but its not the first, and won't be the last buggy phone to be released, and certainly if someone isn't happy with it they should return it. I tried an hd7, didn't like it and returned it, no fuss no muss. And I should say, I'm happy enough with mine and am keeping it, worst case scenario I use it for six months then get some other wp7 AWS device, if there ever is one.

Lol, this is your best point? An alarm clock?
How about WinPho 7 alarm not overriding the music volume and not even going off?
As for crashes I can count the amount of time my iPhone has crashed on 1 hand and the amount of time my nexus one has crashed on 2. I apologize if I want something to work when I buy it. The DVP wouldn't even power on in some cases without pulling the battery. I'm sorry but if the phone is a headache just to turn on then I don't want it. Perhaps you disagree, but there is no need to come in here on a high horse trying to dictate what we should expect from a phones camera, or general usage.
Do I expect a nikon?
No I expect something that can take a decent shot ala the iPhone/Nexus 1/Nokia N8. Obviously there are phones on the market capable of taking great shots,so why should I as a consumer expect lesser performance? If you like a half-ass phone then so be it.
It the DVP the worst phone on the market?
No there is much worst out there, but once again there is much better and as a consumer I am going to go with what is best. I returned mine and hopefully another company gets it right eventually. But honestly the argument that there are buggier phones is pathetic.

With this kind of reasoning you might as well be happy buying a Vertu.
"Hey, this thing takes photos, and can read gmail too!!!!!! I just like my Vertu. If you don't like it, you have a problem!!"
All that I said was that the DVP is bigger than I need, and the keyboard is not as advantageous as I thought it to be. The camera is objectively worse than many camera phones out there, and Dell does not inspire confidence on whether there will even be firmware fixes or not. It's all pretty logical, IMO.
Seriously, don't get offended when people compare it with iPhone or Nexus S. I already tried to be fanboy-sensitive by comparing it to Samsung Focus. But if my post induces potential buyer's remorse on you, it's not my problem. This thread is to be shared with those who already had our remorse.
I love this phone but am hoping that they fix the issues. Most of the bugs that people have should be fixable with a replacement device. The crazy thing is that the initial Engineering Sample that I had seemed to have the least issues. The 16GB model I have in my hands now crashes all the time so I am hoping that it is just a bad phone and when I get my replacement it works as expected.
I expect many will return their phones because of the whole exchange process which is frustrating to say the least.
personally as a non standard smartphone user i plan to keep the device barring hardware malfunction
not really a big talker or texter and i dont mind the crashes as long as they only happen once a day
i can see how a person might be upset though if they spent half a grand on a phone they can only use on tmobile that has issues
glad i didnt buy off contract even though ill be stuck on tmo for 2 years i can always get another phone that uses tmo bands at full price

on the fence about buying streak

I have an iphone 4 im a little bored in terms of customization etc for the phone, i have an upgrade available. I have two options
wait for the motorola atrix or
someone is selling locally a dell streak white locally for $300 and i wait for the quad core stuff by the end of the year. figured someone might help me out and give a suggestion
OK there are many post out here about this dell streak is amazing in all aspects except for the camera. The size, weight, OS, brightness, wifi quality....
The camera is not even close to the iPhone 4 camera.
So if you are a big camera person and don't go for the streak. If you not and you enjoy working with more realstate, and want to customize the phone that way you want, this device is for you.
It is also true that there is only one person developing android Tom for the phone but this guy is really good. I am have been running the latest version of his rom and haven't faced any problems yet.
It's ur call.
P.s. 300 is a steal for this phone.

i do take alot of pics, is the camera THAT bad?
I would describe the Streak as a small tablet that is also a phone. If you want a portable all-in-one device it is very good. I use mine for reading Kindle and Nook books, browsing the internet, and keeping up with emails more than I do as a phone. It is also my music player and navigation device.
You state you are bored and want more customization options. If you mean multiple custom ROMs then the Streak is not for you. If you want to explore the customization options that Android brings then the Streak can fit the bill.
For some the size is a detriment and for others a plus. It can be both. I love it when I am reading a book and miss having a smaller phone when I want to tuck it into a pocket.
If you can get your hands on one that's not tethered to a store display you will get a better feel for the phone.
This the first phone that I have had in a while where I don't feel like it's a placeholder for the next big thing.
Some may disagree, but I would compare it to the camera on the original iphone...maybe iphone 3g, def NOT 3gs.
yea im wondering if i wait and go for the atrix, knowing the bootloader is fubared so i dont know

The camera is bad. Just is. National Geographic isn't clamoring for my photos anyway, so it doesn't have much bearing on my affection for the Dell.
I think now is a very good time to be off-contract - there is a lot of interesting stuff coming along and I'm not about to rush into a contract with any phone. I'm past my two-years on ATT and am content to wait. (My Streak is unlocked from Dell - my previous ATT phone was/is a 3GS.)
If you can get a Streak for $300 in good condition, I think you'll love it - it is a great, great gadget. Tinker around with it, enjoy it and when the killer phone that catches your interest hits the market, you're free to jump in.
lol...maybe it's bad if you want to use it as your primary or professional camera
yea i am waiting to see how xda deals with the bootloader issue and see if they can crack it and start the custom roms, if they cant im gonna sit tight until supposedly tegra 3 hits at the end of the year
Motorola locks their bootloaders so I hear there's no custom roms or the cooked roms don't work 100%. That and they have a terrible track record for actually supporting their phones.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/03/cliq-xt-wont-get-android-2-1-upgrade-motorolas-word-as-good-a/
I did very little research before I bought the dell streak. I just wanted an android tablet with a 5 inch screen. But I'm very happy with my purchase. It makes the iphone 4 look like a kids toy.
It did take a bit of reading to get a custom rom loaded but now I have everything set up.
You'll probably want to take a look at the threads showing off the dell streak to find out about apps like launcher pro & beautiful widgets. Customizing it can take some time.

you could always jailbreak your iphone.
ill say go for it, every one and his mother have iphones, blackberrys and Xperias. but the streak its the king of the hill, the big screen is awesome. i use it for everything, i get like 120 emails daily, i use it to SSH into servers, remote RDP, as SIP phone, to track my expenses, my gym workout, i know u can to this with any phone but the screen is so big that i makes a pleasure to use it.
people will mock at you when u take a call or u carry it in your pocket but it worth it.

Lmfao you got that ish right. Lol right next to his light savor.
I have two cell lines, one is my primary and that's an iPhone 4. The other is my play / hack / toy line and that's currently a Streak.
Personally, if it wasn't for the 5in screen on the Streak I would hate Android having come from a jailbroken iPhone world. I know most wont agree with me, but I find Androids faults (for my use) hard to stomach.
Your iphone is going to have better app selection (100x over on games), better Exchange e-mail support, camera, screen, VPN etc etc.
The Streak has a 5in screen with good quality and as a geek a love playing with custom roms and reading twitter/kindle/comincs on that large screen. Hell, I am just a platform whore who likes having access to everything lol
Even so, I could not live with Android as my only phone, not just because it doesn't meet my work requirements - its just not as polished. As a back up I love it and I think people like DJ_Steve make it so much more useful or we would never have OS updates.
I think you'll love a Streak but highly recommend keeping the i4 for awhile. Get a micro sim to normal size sim adapter and switch out phones based on mood. I do that now, but since I have two lines its super easy to do that.

awesome phone!

just come from iphone and HTC sensation
both excellent but I wanted to go back to windows phone (had a HTC HD7 before) but with a keyboard
I must say this is the best phone I have ever had
The construction is beautiful, the keyboard is the best I have ever used (=BB), its lighteningly quick, the IE browser is better then webkit (I can enter some forms in ebay and on forums that I could never do on iphone), the screen is super sharp and marketplace is full enough for me (flight control & angry birds ).
I really hope that Dell brings out a non-keyboard version (as this is more popular) and markets these hard to service providers come mango.
Dell showed it could make great handheld hardware with the old Axim range, and now the venue pro.
I really hope Dell make a success of their smartphone business, they really deserve to!
I strongly recommend these phones to people that want a beautiful phone with keyboard. Especially as Dell is occasionally doing various forms of discounts on these now.
Yeah it really is a great phone! I have one and I recently put Mango on it...makes it even better. Have you a case for it?

using an old case
I have a terrapin pouch on order, looks nice
I also might get a flip case. Looking for one that doesn't go into the slider Grove as this might damage the phone
I'm in the market for an armband type case for working out. Lemme know if you come across anything.
