Question re: 3g hotspot on Droid X

I just got an early upgrade notice from VZ (really early, like over a year early, but I'm not complaining) and I'm planning on checking out the X after work and probably ordering it. Now, my question is with the 3g hotspot functionality. I see that it's apparently available now but VZ charges extra for it... Is that some sort of VZ app that provides the functionality? Froyo isn't out yet for it, so I'm wondering how they're providing it, and whether anyone knows if they'll continue to charge for it once it's available via Froyo. Thanks for any information!

You will always be charged. However do the one click root and install barnacle then it will be free.

Makes sense...it's not like VZ doesn't try to limit functionality on any of their other phones and only provide the functionality through their own pay features...
I mean, I realize you may use more bandwidth using your phone as a mifi, but you're already PAYING for that bandwidth.

Technically this does work. It will not however, be free. You will be violating your Terms of Service. *If* you ever get caught, you will likely be billed, or have the line terminated, etc.
Don't get me wrong. I'm rooted, and have the Wi-Fi Tether app on my phone, and it's unlikely that VZW will make much of an effort to stop the small minority of us who get that capability. However, one can never be certain. If you take these actions, you should do so knowing full well that it isn't "free".

Agreed. I also don't tether to the point that I hit 5GB that might cause a flag. Now i you tether a laptop daily you will likely get caught. I have hit 3gb on my droid an it was via streaming and downloading.

There is no way for VZ to find out that your using services that are paid for free, unless you root your device and take it in for repairs without unrooting it.

i just cant seem to get tethering to work. i mean i can connect to the phone and computer to connect, but not web access. tried the wifi tether app included with 1 click root, and barnacle. nothing

yes there is app built in from vzw for there hotspot app. it cost 20$ a month and u only get 2gb. on the palm free it started out as a paid app then went free. there is tethering on 2.2 and when you use it it takes you to vzw.com and you have to add this feature

Quick Question about sprint hotspot

Ok, I just baught the phone 2 days ago and I'm pretty much a newb when it comes to smartphones.. That being said I rooted my phone this morning and wanting to play around with things tried out the sprint hotspot. The hotspot worked flawlessyly and I can easily find and connect to it via laptop, but my question is this. Did this actually open up from me rooting my phone or was it already open for my access? I don't want to get my sprint bill and see this 30 buck charge for the hotspot tagged on.
Anyways just looking for a little info about the hotspot and root. Thanks again for any replies.

Dont use sprint hotspot! U will be charged! U have to download wireless tether, u can find the link if u search this forum.

here is the link for the wireless tether app. must be rooted for this to work which you are. this is free and dosnt cost unlike the sprint one which dose cost you money. just dont abuse it =p

I was wondering what is the easiest way to tether wirelessly without paying the extra monthly fee? I see there's an app for rooted users, but it doesn't seem to work very well.

I would like to know too. I use to be able to tether (via USB and Bluetooth) with my BB for free on TMO. I heard that TMO is now charging which sucks but I heard if your phone is rooted that you can still tether for free on Android but then I read some people with a rooted phone still got the text about the 14.99 plan.. So it's a bit confusing. So is there still a way to tether for free? I only use it while on the train to connect my netbook to just do basic stuff like surf the web(no video playback) and check mail so even a free tether via bluetooth option wouldnt be horrible to me but if I could get the wifi hot spot working for free that would be awesome.

if your just checking email and stuff why dont you just use your phone.? i mean thats whats its for. instead of trying to look for a way to cheat the system why not just use it? thats why your paying for it anyways.....
and people wonder why phone internet and the such cost an arm and a leg.

Because say if I'm on the train on my netbook or laptop doing work (non internet) and I want to check my email it's easier to just open a browser on the device I'm already using instead of pulling out my phone. And what's with the holier than thou attitude? I mean TMO use to allow it for free when other carriers didn't and people on all those other carrier's always found ways around it to get it for free.. so asking his question is a legit question since many many people have been "cheating" the system for years.. and cheating a carrier isn't really going to make me lose sleep at night.. especially because in many ways carriers have been cheating us for years..

its still not a legit question to ask. your catching yourself in a hole already. you said " tmobile USED to allow it and now they dont. end of story. and your saying that people always found a way around it. its all not legit. i dont really care if you dont care about cheating a carrier, but i doubt asking about it on here is going to be kosher. since this a forum about how to hack your phone to get more performance NOT about how to hack your phone to get stuff your NOT supposed to get for free.

I believe that you can still use the wireless hotspot feature on your phone. I dont think T-mobile is charging for it yet. They will just cap your Data speeds if you use more data than they allow in a month.

I've been using the stock Wi-Fi Hotspot app since day one on my phone and have yet to receive the text, but then I never even get close to the 5GB "cap". some people have had the same "luck" as me where as others have gotten the text the very first time they use it... so I would suggest trying it out and if you don't get the text you're good to go.
if that doesn't work try Barnacle (in the Market).
besides every time I have asked a CSR about whether or not they charge to use the built-in Wi-Fi Hotspot app they tell me they don't know anything about it, even had one tell me that the phone didn't come with it and to check with the developer that uploaded it to the Market.

hmm How long have you been with Tmo? I wonder if the people who are getting the text about the 14.99 plan are new customers or if they are exsisting customers.. Maybe they are new customers so there accounts are built in with the block from the get and people who have been with tmo for a while are either 1.grandfathered and doesnt apply to them or 2. Hasn't been rolled out to all exsisting customer's yet.
The grandfathered thing I bring up because I know TMO has a great loyalty program usually whatever you got when you opened your account(features/services) you get for the same price no matter how high it goes up.. for example I use to have bb. for years I only paid 19.99 when TMO raised the price to I think 25 mine stayed at 19.00. When I just upgraded to android they gave me the unlimited plan for what I was paying for my BB unlimited plan 19.99. Another example is I got hotspot at home with my BB that allowed me to make calls over wifi without it deducting from my minutes for an extra 10 bucks a month.. after a while they stopped offering this service but I was still getting it. As long as I never removed it from my account it stayed.
So maybe it's a thing where if you signed up after that policy for wifi(or right around) you will get banged with the "you need a tethering plan" message otherwise you're good.. That's just a possible explanation based purely on a hunch..maybe.. kinda.. sorta

I've been with them since 06.. I tethered on my BB up until 2 weeks ago when I switch to Android (I set my android up for wifi hotspot but havent used it yet because my netbook is being repaired) so it could possibly be that. I'm curious to know if the people who got this text message are new(er) customers and the ones that said they didnt get the text and have no problems tethering are older customers

I tried the built in wireless tethering feature about an hour ago and I haven't received a text asking me to sign up for the monthly add on. I wasn't expecting it to work for free and I assume it won't be forever.
Has anyone who has rooted their MT4G had success using the barnacle app to wirelessly tether?

yeah it was working for me, that was why I suggested it if you're not able to use stock. I just prefer the simplicity of the stock app, that and when ever I would tether with barnacle or the google code wireless tether my calls wouldn't come through but they do with the stock app.

Tethering On Gingerbread

Running liberty v.4 gingerbread on my dx. Yesterday I went to try and use my theathering application, and it directed me to the verizon page for 3g mobil hotspot and usb thethering. Is this a problem faced by all who use gingerbread? and if so has there been a solution posted anywhere to allow me to still be able to tether on gingerbread? I never had this issue until I went to gingerbread, and will flash back to 2.2 if I need to in order to be able to tether. Any input is always apprecitaed! thanks

Try using wireless tether from the market instead

Ive been using pdanet ever since the p3droid warning... Ive heard that people are still using the wifi tether app

I am using wifi tether, and it works, but when I want to get back online from my phone, it kicks me over to the verizon page telling me that I have to pay to tether, and I have to restart my phone to be able to search the internet.

I'm using the market wifi tether with the tbh patcher applied. Its tricky to get started, but once I do, it stays connected.

i flat stayed on froyo fission 261 cause it runs fine and i dont like being screwed with by processes i cant find or not being able to delete things i want to delete from the system....

If you are under contract with verizon (I.E. the one or two year contract offered in order to obtain a discount on your mobile device) then rooting your phone is illegal as well as teathering with out paying the service fee! If you are not under a contract then it is leagal to do as you wish to or with your own phone, including but not limited to rooting, teathering, and cloning another device owned by you (also not under contract) for your own use and purpose!!!

First off, this thread was not started to create an argument or debate on the legalities of tethering or rooting. Now that being said, how is tethering illegal? We should be able to use our "unlimited" data package however we wish. From my understanding, there is a difference between tethering and the mobile 3g hotspot which makes the way they both go about producing the wireless internet different. Again though, this is not the point, I was simply hoping someone could help me, if i wanted to be lectured on what I was doing wrong, I would have asked "hey, is this something that is wrong or not" can we please stay on topic?

Tethering and rooting is in absolutely no way illegal and does not even go against the terms of service. If you are against rooting then you truly don't belong on a DEVELOPERS forum.
Anyway, what I would recommend is trying wireless tether, if that doesn't work, you could try a wired tethering service such as PDAnet or easytether which is what I use

Rooting is not illegal. What penal code refers to this? It simply voids your warranty.

The fifth us circuit court has deemed there is no legal basis to prevent users from gaining higher level access to their devices. As for contract obligations, there are no stipulations against rooting, rather it voids the warranty, which is acceptable. Teathering is a bit of a gray area. There are two schools of thought. You obviously highlight one, but I believe in the other. That being that I signed up for a data plan at $29.99 a month that allows for my usage of as much data as I desire. (Unlimited, as in not restricted) As teathering is a feature of the android device I purchased, I am using my unlimited data plan in a manner I see fit. And lastly, I would love a direct quote of the verizon service agreement you draw this conclusion from.
Back onto topic, the TBH patcher works with wireless teather. The trick with the patcher is to flash it in CWM a few times, reboot, start teather, then flash it a few more times. Whatever the difference was, it works well for me.

IDK if FoxFi works but last night when my wife was picking hers up the VZW rep told us that he had a customer that was able to bypass the provisioning check & tether without rooting. Not sure how accurate that actually was but the rep seemed to have a firm grasp on the technology he was selling so take his comment with a grain of salt. If you want I can test it when she gets home to see if it works if no one else replies to you. Just tag me & I'll ask her to borrow her phone "for science".

FoxFi USB/Bluetooth tethering works, Foxfi wifi tethering doesn't. For native hotspot, if you're on unlimited plan and not paying extra $30 for hotspot service you will get an error if you attempt to use Wi-Fi/USB/Bluetooth.

Any progress on this? I appreciate your sacrifices for science, since I just put in an order on this phone, but didn't realize there wasn't a root option, and I'm going to need to find a way to replace my previous root tether, so I don't get charged $30/mo.

So has anyone heard if we will be able to use native tethering once our plans go up without needing root or the extra 30 dollar charge you guys are speaking about.
