Screw all the people who jumped ship to the Droid X just because of some benchmarks that have no real impact on everyday use.

wow, way to copy the at&t/iphone model. tiered data plans and having your flagship phone in a walled garden.
if this isnt proof that the iphone is coming to vzw, then i dont know what is!

Yep, that's why i buy HTC

Except you actually get 3G service with Verizon. Atleast they can justify charging more with a great network, AT&T on the other hand...

Verizon has a great network so they can at least justify the extra costs. Not att.
As for the digitally locked boot loader, it cost them my sale. I'll keep my evo and maybe get an epic. If not then something else later in the year.
This is foolish on motorola's part. They are one device off of bankruptcy, the droid saved them and the hacker community saved the droid for many users. Motorola lacks the apple polish so I'm not sure I see the closed system working as well.

Don't much care about DroidX, The EVO is better anyway Seems like people just cling to the droid name similiar as people clinging to iPhone. I got sucked in for a couple days but quickly came to my senses, once you get past the whole "me too" droid moniker you realize the EVO is really where it's at
I have to admit though Verizon really has the advertising down and Android likely would not be where it's at today without them. So I hope the droid x is succesful enough for them to continue the ad campaigns because I am addicted to Android these days!

This is just my opinion of course...
When I went to a local motorola plant to try and buy hardware directly from them, they kinda looked down at met and said they don't sell to the public. Snooty elitest that acted like they were the mafia or something. Christ, the monkey at the desk in the lobby looked like a 350lb bouncer. They had many of their products behind glass cases, but they didn't want my money. I had people I knew that worked at their assembly plants in the past. They said that the way they were treated was like you are just a number and we can easily replace you. They had a employment agency fishing for people to work there. If you messed up on just one thing in the long and tedious interview process, you couldn't reapply for six months. F them! They may have been "good" back in the day, but I think they can take their attitude and stuff it. Even some of the people that are in engineering have the attitude like they're better than everyone else. I don't care that they are slowly dying as a company. They shouldn't care what you use their product for, as long as you are buying their product. Idiots.

Calm down you two. What I meant was the fact that Verizon and AT&T both have their flagship phones locked down.
Also...when I was the Death Star, the 3G service was pretty good. I just couldn't justify the extra $30+ a month.

Never liked Motorola,Verizon nor at&t.but I'm hopeing one day t-mobile and sprint merge together as one carrier and bring out gsm/cdma plus LTE world phones to whip Verizon and at&t.hopefully by 2012.

I haven't closed my Death Star account yet... but I have to tell you I've had to use my AT&T phone to call Sprint 6 times since I got the phone on launch day. Why? Because my Sprint service was out.
And AT&T's 3G... no comparison. Sprint I'm lucky to get 500kbps consistently. AT&T I get at least 1.5Mbps consistently.

Most future phones are going to be locked down by the companies. That's until the devs get ahold of it. No phone is uncrackable!

It's just big company corporate thinking. They don't give a f if they're almost in the hole; they're out of loop with the rest of the world and most of the all, the end user.

On that note, there's something I've always dreamed of: A truly universal phone. Pentaband GSM/GPRS/etc., CDMA, WiMax, and LTE. Unreasonable now? Yes. Unreasonable in a year or two? Nope. Especially if the Sprint/T-Mobile merger works out.
I pity people who still have iDEN phones.

I just hope that all Android phone hardware developers out there are nice enough to let the consumer know if their device will be locked down before it gets released. When I had Sprint from 06 to Feb of this year, I got 2+ consistently... their network in Denver is completely shot now. I'm hoping its just because of the upgrades for 4G... But either way, I think its ironic I've had to call Sprint from my ATT phone for tech support.

Looks like Sprint cancelled the N1 as well...

Jesus, I already have my T-Mobile version and it doesn't hurt me but I really don't like Sprint (and Verizon) giving hopeful N1 customers the finger.
Its not that they just said no to subsidizing the phone... its that since they work off a CDMA network (non sim cards) they will just block the phone entirely off their network. Even if you had a Sprint compatible version and called them up to activate it they would tell you no. Greedy SOB's.
I wanted the N1 to become a smartphone standard across all 4 carriers so that Google would continue to produce it for a LONG time and come out with subsequent versions over time. But with just two carriers supporting it I am scared Google might abandon it long term due to low sales.

Doesn't matter to you or me. We've got one of 2 current gen standard bearers (other being the Milestone/Droid) and ours doesn't have to go through a carrier to get OS updates.
All the apps will be built with us in mind, so fewer bugs and possibly more apps. We're basically Android Dev Phone 3. Nothing wrong with that at all. This is a loss for Sprint customers only, and the size of that loss is debatable.
Sucks to be a sprint customer. Will the EVO be better than the Nexus One? On paper, yes.. however that has yet to be seen. Most (or some) of us thought the N1 would be overshadowed by the Droid Incredible but that wasn't the case at all.
EVO vs Nexus One .... coming soon.
I wonder who's decision it was to cancel these phones...
Verizon, Sprint, Google, or HTC?
Who's to blame here?

Good question. If it was Google, I think they bailed just before the vindication of the N1. I am reading about perceived "issues" with the Incredible and Desire similar to those on the N1 regarding 3g coverage. The N1 is a damn fine phone, and Verizon and Sprint users are missing out on an absolute gem with a better forward path than anything else in the hardware queue.

Its DEF Sprint's and Verizon's fault the phone was cancelled. Google could easily put in a different radio (like they did with the ATT version) but Sprint and Verizon can just refuse to activate the phone on their network like they did. ATT and TMo didn't have a choice since they use sim cards. Sprint and Verizon are evil companies that force their customers into more expensive options instead of giving them choices
Same reason the verizon deal fell through. both spring and verizon are very controlled networks. Googles wants to essentially turn the cell phone system into an europe-esque system where phones and service are seperate entities.
Each nexus phone has to be programs for verizon or sprint. They probably couldn't come to terms with an appropriate price and management. They'd have to have the phones programmed before being shipped out, one more step and one more cost.
Then you have the headaches of pushing out updates. We saw how long it took Droid to get the 2.1 update. If you want to update a sprint android phone you have to take it to a retail store to do it!
thats a damn shame
sprint cancelled (probably, i'm just guessing here) for the same reason verizon did. they have a top notch android phone coming out, for which they reap the benefits of sales. why would they chop that by catering to a phone that would only compete with their own sales, but they don't get sales money for? neither att nor tmo have a better phone right now.
btw, i love my nexus one. i can see why they would worry, lol. incredible is a nice phone, but the chick i'm hanging out with just got one, i played with it, and i prefer my N1, tbh
have to get a sprint phone for clinics though this june, so hoping the evo gets out early june phone n1, but evo for hanging out with and playing

If Sprint or Verizon doesn't want to subsidize the N1 because they want to push their own phone that's fine. But blocking an unlocked N1 from using their network just for the sake of being ****'s and forcing people into more expensive options? That's just bullsh*t and shouldn't be tolerated
Just because customers getting screwed happens in American business doesn't make it acceptable...

I partially agree with the OP here, it would be nice to have this across all carriers, but in all honesty, CDMA is just not something that is well supported outside the US. Having GSM is key since it is more the worldwide standard. I don't think not having CDMA is going to really hurt things for this device.

That makes no sense at all. Even if they didn't subsidize the phone, like AT&T, someone could buy the N1 100% with their own money, and then throw their money at Verizon/Sprint for the voice and data plans. All I could see is a net PLUS of subscribers on their networks. Now if someone reallly wants an N1, they'd be thinking T-Mobile / AT&T; a net LOSS of subscribers for Verizon/Sprint.

Verizon and Sprint have a much much more closed network than Att or T-mobile. They wan't entire control of what goes on the network.
I don't think anyone would care because sprint customers would probably be waiting for EVO 4g..
personally, i really liked sprint. i had a heck of a plan with them, i got a lot of free upgrades without contract, and i always had a signal, no matter where i went. i did sometimes have to roam, but i had free roaming, so no big whoop.
i only switched over to tmo for the N1

What the heck is Sprint THINKTIG?

I left at&t grandfathered in with their unlimited data because I wanted android, the the evo was the bomb, so it was a good fit. Now that I can upgrade, what will I upgrade to?
I don't think everyone has to worry about their contract. Sprint just put the final nail in their coffin.
How can you make a new phone that will run slower (yes it has a faster processor), but more work to do. No gingerbread, no front camera, no 4g and to top it off a crappy manufacturer. Microsoft has to love this.
I see HTC starting their own MetroPCS service and growing from there. Or even a Google HTC partnership.

ive been with sprint for 10 years now, and theyve had nothing but terrible phones, the evo has been the most worthwhile phone ever to come out of sprint.
im still happy with the evo as long as the devs keep supporting it and bringing out new features to keep me from getting bored with it.
im sure sprint will announce a new htc phone sometime this year, i hope.
Why would you leave a carrier because of a phone they announced? Sure, it's a silly phone that I have zero interest in but it didn't ruin my day or come to my house and kick my dog. People get so worked up over nothing these days.
I bet most you aren't even eligible for an upgrade anyway.
Sph33r,
Don't rain on our negative parade.
I've been up for an upgrade for some time, waiting for HTC to perfect the EVO and stay competitive.
Trust me, Sprint very well knew the EVO was their bread and butter. Why else do they still run commercials? Heck we all paid a bogus $10 fee knowing 4g was not coming any time soon. To add insult to injury, they now charge everyone this BS fee, instead of manning up and just adjusting the price of the plan. Do they think we are all that dense?
This announcement was just a kick in the ass, showing they are truly clueless. Worst off, if you are going it alone in the Wimax arena, what confidence do you have on the company you own by leaving it out of the phone. I think we all pretty much know they will be forced down the LTE path now that Verizon dumped Wimax. If they had any balls, they would have put an LTE radio in, to show they had any brains.
There comes a time when good price for a service gets trumped by bad management, lies, and sub-par offerings. HTC has been the Savior for sprint this last year, and they too were left out on the cold. Even if HTC makes a new phone on their own, Sprint's marketing dollars have just been pissed away.

Yeah this Kyocera phone blows. Don't get it. Hold out for the EVO 2 that will likely come out this summer.
I hate when people don't know what they are talking about. Sprint mentioned that they have no problem switching to LTE if it's the standard for the world, before they greenlit WiMax. Numerous times they made notions that will go towards LTE, (LTE World Conference, Clearwire changing their contract with Intel, Clearwire testing LTE with Sprint evaluating it, Network Vision, which will make sure the LTE switch is easy, Beceem creating an WiMax/LTE chip, Sprint stating they have the power to use both) How the hell did Verizon dumping WiMax forced Sprint to go towards LTE, if they were never going to that technology in the first place? Btw, you see that EVO 2 that people are convinced coming out this summer? It may drop in the 4Q. It's not the HTC Sabor either, so I think people need to ignore those specs. Just a little fyi.

I'm curious: if you left AT&T for Sprint to get the Evo, that would have been in like June? At the earliest? So.... how are you already up for an upgrade? Please share, I want upgrades every 8 months too!
AT&T drops the Atrix 4G in March, only to release news of the Attix 4G 2 in November. Verizon drops the Thunderbolt this month, only to drop the Thunderbolt 2 in October. It's stupid that people think the EVO 2 would be released in less than a year, but I don't blame you guys for reaching out in desperation. The other carriers give me numerous toys to play with, and not Sprint. It's not because of this worldwide claim that they are poor, it's because they think their strategy of not releasing a library of smartphones in one year works. You would be surprised on how many devices for different manufacters that Sprint has in the lab. If they continue this strategy, a buyout will eventually take place or they will become 4th.

So, I literally just joined this forum to reply to this thread.
This is by far the most ignorant thread I have seen on these forums in awhile.
The Evo Shift was NOT designed to replace the Evo. It was made for those people who wanted:
Slide-Out Keyboards
Smaller Phone Size
A good smartphone for less money
Not every phone that Sprint releases is meant to be the biggest and baddest "next" thing. Most people on XDA are in the demographic that looks for that, but despite being lost in your little world, there are some people out there that actually don't want such a huge bulky phone, and they miss the days when you could actually FEEL the keys on your fingertips.
The Evo Shift was created for those people, for the demographic who is NOT you.
And before the flames start, I own a standard Evo 4G, and would never switch to the Shift, but my girlfriend hates my phone, and would love nothing more than to be able to switch away from her Incredible, to the Shift.
Perhaps there will be a war of screens kind of like the war on number of razor blades on disposable razors. We might see a 5 screen phone in a couple of years.

How do you have 80 days? I am a new customer and I thought it was just 30 days.
Atrix4G Rooted!
yes i am goin to return the phone soon i am leaving this group..
I'm planning on keeping mine until Motorola rolls out the Gingerbread update; I figure by that time, if the bootloader hasn't been cracked, and Gingerbread doesn't address all the issues I've got with the phone...I'll unlock it and sell it on eBay and go for something else. I'm trying to be patient, but it does seem like there's been an mass exodus of Atrix owners on XDA. There's really nothing I'd want more than the Atrix on AT&T though.
I just got to this party. Why is everyone leaving? Inspire isnt that much better, if at all. Im giving this atrix a run and it feels snappier than my inspire I just returned and this is basically stock.
i was thinking of returning my atrix but i plan on doing the same as KaLiBLeeK.
nothing really seems to interest me right but i have until the 9th of april

Costco has a 90 day return/exchange policy.
considering i've loved the phone with just stock UI and Go Launcher EX, i don't plan on returning it. i have to stay on AT&T, and nothing is really better. the inspire doesn't have an FFC, it's too big for me, and I like using the webtop interface on my TV when I need to.
what i'm really disappointed in is AT&T's rollout; absolutely ****ty network and trying to re-market it as "4G" when it's clearly not even close to max 3G speeds, and their utter lack of marketing for the phone.

Duh, I knew that lol. Too bad they wont sell them outright. Tried to buy a Captivate outright from them for that very reason but the refused.

Where I live, AT&T's the only one with any real presence. Sprint and Verizon (Shockingly) are non existent. T-Mobile has very, VERY little reception.
Having it work at home is extremely important, so for all their faults, where I live, AT&T has been stellar.
Plus, I talk to some folks at a nearby store. Luckily, many of them seem to know what they're talking about. They know the difference between LTE and HSPA+ and all that.

I should clarify. by "****ty network" I meant it's performance vs. expectations. I've had AT&T since forever and on my BB it was never a problem because I didn't do any heavy actions, since the BB OS and browser is way limited. Signal coverage in LA is great for me. however, data speeds usually crawl (1-2 Mbps) and that annoys me as my roommate will easily get 4-5 on his T-mo HSPA+ network.
AT&T shouldn't have jumped the gun by marketing out 4G when it clearly wasn't ready and/or activated in most areas. Nowhere i've gone in southern california (from LA to SD to inland) have I seen anything more than 3 Mbps, which is pitiful unfortunately.

keeping my Atrix bought from at&t unlocked and using it on rogers in canada dvice and im coming from the nexus one and desire z and a slew of other android devices by far the best ive had and this laptop dock is so damn innovative i cant see my self with another device for a while.... even tho bootloader is locked i think moto really stepped up there game with this phone...
You would think that with this being motos most powerful phone they would want to push out 2.3 as quickly as possible. We have had this phone about a month and I have not heard anything from motorola. I hope they don't abandon the atrix because it wont be anythi.g more than a gimmick with the webtop functionality

This is my first Android device. Came from all of the iPhones. I am very impressed and plan to keep it. 3 weeks in and I am still learning things!

[Q] Well Sprint is giving me the boot!

Sprint notified me via letter today that I would no longer have service after the 5th of July. I moved out of Sprint's service area around September of last year and knew this was coming eventually. I am actually shocked it took so long .
As sad as I am to leave Sprint and my Evo; I must move forward!
That being said, what phones are on the horizon? I will probably switch to Verizon because they still have unlimited data. I'm not adverse to prepaid as those services have come a long way in the last few years.
I am liking the Thunderbolt, as it is the most similar to our Evos.
cool story bro...
joking aside, sorry to see you leave. gl with whatever you choose to go with

you can make your evo work on cricket wireless or metropcs wireless if either are available in your area. Check into it.

Nope and nope, bummer really. Not a lot of choices here in Arkansas, especially in a smaller town. I remember when it was just Alltel and $0.25 a minute lol.
When are dual core phones going to explode? There doesn't seem to be many on the market. I want something with some serious XDA support of course. There is no way I could run a stock Android phone anymore .

You could use it on virgin mobile, but they're a sprint mvno & you'd be using the latest sprint prl. And if sprint service didn't work for you before, guess it won't now.

ok... and when can u become a sprint customer again?
Of all the new phones coming out, I'm just wondering why you would go with the thunderbolt?
Wow... $250?.. really? nearly mint EVO's in my area are going for $150. something like that would be asking for a trade of a blackberry or HTC Magic. lol
ok, not to get off topic, but in other areas are people on craigslist asking for iPhone 3GS or 4's for "every better phone ever"?
it seems like whenever I go on, I see someone going "I'll trade my stupid, dumb EVO 4G for an iPhone 3GS"
and I'm dumbfounded and almost willing to trade in my iphone that has sat here for a YEAR in for another EVO...because I love this phone so much. lol

Harsh guys. You would notice if you read the whole thing it says OBO. I don't expect to get that much, I just had to put a price in. Thanks for taking to time to search Craigslist for the listing though!
Just got off the phone with Sprint and it turns out they are only canceling the line that has the most roaming usage on it which isn't my Evo (we have three lines)

I haven't really heard of any dual core on Verizon except for the droid bionic which probably will have a locked bootloader so it might get rooted or might not. At&t should have Galaxy S2 by then or the HTC Sensation on T Mobile hoping that its shipped with a unlocked bootloader.

Thank you for this

wow! one year with sprint! :)

so I log in to check my bill at sprint.com, wanted to browse as i am looking for another phone to play with.. LOl
it's been a year, got my deposit back! wahoot!
seeing a little credit in there is nice, I have to say form all the stories i have heard about sprint being on these boards for almost a year, I have had a pleasurable experience with them, the financing department is first class, had some billing issues with them and they were as pleasant as can be. I do feel their service can be better in their stores, as My trusty evo's charging port let go back in november, and i had some rough spots tryin to get sprint to help me, so i went to htc and they resolved my issue no problems, so in a nutshell i am a happy customer!
now, do i want a design4g, epic4g touch, or photon4g? LOL
Totally agree with you. I have had a very pleasant experience with Sprint as well. Had a couple small billing issues that were fixed very quickly and drop less calls now than with Verizon. I used Verizon for 9 years but the cost was getting out of control. So far over the last 20 months, I have saved $2256 by switching. Total win
Sprint is great for the price. Just wait til network vision rolls out and coverage increases.

hah +1 for sprint gotta admit cept i just moved and i have ZERO coverage
note its northern wisconsin so i shouldnt expect to much i wish my evo had a unlocked sim slot i'd just grab a voice plan from att (closest tower is across the bay and its att of course)

I have been itching for the epic touch 4g....
Grats! I remember when I got my deposit back...was stoked to have 2 free months of service basically. As far as upgrading your phone I would hold off on that. I just recently purchased the EVO 4G because I really wasn't too impressed with the newer phones. Granted they are better than the EVO but just slightly which to me isn't worth either the upgrade credit or the extra cash. Wait for some more ICS phones and then upgrade....i'm betting Samsung and HTC will come out with something great.

Which part of northern Wisconsin? I use to live in a small town(Miladore) twenty minutes north of Stevens Point.
@brad check out the epic touch 4G thats what I'm looking at haha. My one year with Sprint is coming up April 15th. I know I'm not elgible for an upgrade but I figure ill treat myself anyway haha.

I agree, I have had a pleasurable experience with them, their service is excellent.
Brad, I would wait until MWC. I am having the same debate, I am going to wait for my 2 years to officially upgrade but if I get the chance to try a different handset I will. My wife needs a replacement EVO but I am kind of hoping they wont have one and we will have to get something else... we will see. But HTC is going to be launching something BIG this year!
I'm waiting it out too. Galaxy Nexus, sure it has LTE but it is last year's technology. I have very high hopes for MWC and shall be revealed there.
Out of Design, Photon, or Epic Touch?
Design has basically no development community. Smaller screen, and single core just doesn't cut it for me.
Photon has Motoblur and it is a worldphone, if you're into that kind of thing. It has a small but quality development community, jokersax has put out some good stuff for them. Unlocking the bootloader borks 4G. You can relock to fix 4G, and you can't relock with custom kernels.
Epic Touch used to have Loss of Signal, which was an absolute pain. It is pretty much gone now. Took a while to get AOSP on it, but they have accomplished. They have the strongest development community out of the three. I think it is BML but I'm not sure. If it is, hopefully they will be able to convert it to MTD sometime in the near future.
OR wait
i can never wait for my upgrade i have about 4 months til my contract is up ... sadly i maybe switching to the evil empire (at&t) :/
thanks guys! think im gonna wait, love my evo to death, and i just got a kindle fire so i got a new device to hold me over haha!
you guys are the best

Hahaha I know that feeling all too well. I dropped my LG Optimus S a few months back and the screen just stopped working and I remember hoping I wouldn't be able to fix it so that I would be forced to get a new phone
I was a year and 6 months with sprint when they cancel my contact, for data usage when I was on unlimited data plan. Don't be, glad be sad haa ha

Have you considered calling them and letting them know that you have no service at your house. I was having the same problem as I live in a small town in southern california and they sent me a free airave. Granted its not the best solution in the world but it will provide you with coverage in your home as long as you have high speed internet.
I've had a few minor ups and down with Sprint as far as billing went, but next to nil issues with repairs or phone service. I wish it was my first year again. I've been with Sprint for close to a decade now.
As far as a new phone goes, I'm with one of the previous posters. There's yet to been a phone released that has made me want to make the switch. Especially due to many of the awesome ROMS that been developed for our phones in the past year or so. In some cases, it's literally like having a new phone every few months. lol

yes i have considered that but atm with google voice intergration i can still text fine over wifi so im content on waiting a little til i have more concrete plans and my internets its through phone company (it was through my cable in my previous town so i just hooked up a land line and/or use skype) thanks for the suggestion.
and my ex got the airave since it was tied to her plan damnit
I've been with Sprint since '99... And I've definitely had my ups and downs. Overall I'm very happy with my plan, unlimited, my Airave at no charge to boost signal at the house and my E4G that has a very mature development community... But I'm really hoping to see some quad core hotness released in the next few months...
