TV Out? - Galaxy S I9000 General

I know that the Samsung Galaxy is DNLA capable with a compatible telly for streaming movies, etc but I've also seen videos online of a TV Out function on the Galaxy S via the 3.5mm port on the phone but I was wondering if anyone can confirm this and has used it?

Yeah I bought a cable for the TV-out, it's not the prettiest picture on a HDTV as it's composite, but it is fine if you are in a hotel and want to watch a film or surf the internet from your phone. It's not good for gaming as there's some lag.

Do you think it would work ok for like a SNES Emulator?

Many thanks.
Do you know if this is the same link that Tachikoma_kun purchased from?
Reason I ask is I note Tachikoma_kun is in the UK the same as I and I'd like to hear if he purchased from either a UK retailer or on Ebay.co.uk.

I bought mine from eBay.co.uk from a seller called "Superetrader", it was a CA-75U cable for Nokia N95-N96-N97, etc. It cost £1.94 including delivery.

This is the one that I bought:- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400136001596
The seller also does a great pull-up leather case for the SGS for the vast sum of £2.99 inc postage which I bought at the same time.

Is it possible to get a usb mini to hdmi cable, an then some how use it to display hd vid to your TV...?

Probably not, you might be able to get a VNC client on the phone and view it on a computer, but I doubt you can output HDMI over the USB port as you would have to design the hardware especially for that, and it would be a listed feature.

The cables exist... but probably not compatible with Galaxy S...
http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/...l&subsubtype=data-cables-kits&tab=accFeatures
1. We need to know whether the hardware is capable.
2. If its hardware capable, then hopefully someone can build the software. If not... then we are stuck with composite lols.

I tried searching a bit, found a lead to some Japanese boards. So i opened a thread in 2 boards.
The guys over in DoCoMo boards in Japan and futaba/2ch claim it to work.
On the other hand, those guys are master trolls, i don't know if it would be wise to trust their word on this.
So i'd wait a bit more, but it at least gives some hope for it to be compatible.
Do remember that we didn't even know about the composite TVOUT when the device was launched.

Well, you had the manual before the launch, i didn't...
Anyway, this is wierd. I searched a bit on some sites, and tried to filter down everything to samsung phones that support HDMI.
No results. By specs, none of samsung's phones support HDMI.
So why the hell does this product exist, and why does it say on the product page
"by connecting your compatible SAMSUNG phone"
But... no phones is compatible, by official specs.
You confuse me, Samsung, you seriously do.

Do Samsung themselves claim HDMI support on the phone?
It can send files via DLNA, and you can connect it to anything that can display an input from a composite connection.
I don't see why you are so angry, other than the fact you assumed it would allow HDMI.

Agreed... there is no mention and never has been mention of any HDMI connection.

He's not that angry, though it's hard to judge someone's intent from some text... and anyhow, he's not stressed that the galaxy s doesn't support HDMI out, he's confused as to why Samsung appear to have a cable on the market for which no Samsung phone on the market appears to have a use for, let alone the Galaxy.

The way i put it down was a bit off, i'm not even a bit angry. there's no reason for me to be. I bought this device regardless of HDMI support.
I'm just very confused, as SquidgyB says.
It's very odd that such a cable exists if there isn't a single product that supports it, supposedly.
Though i didn't think for a moment i'll get HDMI support from this phone (and actually, when i bought it i thought DLNA was the only way i can get a video output, so even the 3.5 composite was a pleasent suprise), i'd be happy if it turns out to support it.
I think we will all be.

[PROJ] Full UI Via HDMI Out (need a tester)

Okay I have a few ideas on getting this to work, none of which are that difficult. I'm writing up an app right now to try it out, I should have it ready within the next couple hours.
However, I do have a problem, I have no HDMI cable! So can someone who has one get into contact with me on Gmail.
Just send me an email and tell me you'd be happy to test and as long as you'll get with me on GTalk once I send the app to you to discuss whether it works or not and any issues you have.
I'll update this post with more info when I'm done.
EDIT: First alpha sent to my 3 testers. Waiting for a reply from them before more info.
You probably got some volunteers already.. but I do have an hdmi cable and can help if needed.
Thx for working on this

Actually I haven't had anyone email me yet, so if you wanna hit me up so I have your GTalk for later feel free.
Also, just a little more info, this will probably KILL performance while it is running, since it'll be a loop constantly copying frames from buffer to buffer, but it will probably still be usable. I don't know yet.
Be prepared, it may kill your cat, blow up your house, and then take over the world, all while creating as much heat as a nuclear reactor. (Or it may just work )
Added on Gtalk and email sent. Ready to help you test
Sorry for the delay. Even with the Android dev I've done I've never done anything multithreaded. I have to run the copier in another thread to keep the system from freezing, so I should still get it tonight, but it'll take a little longer than I thought.
Added you to gtalk. Just tested SlingPlayer w/ Evo over HDMI, no joy of course.
Eager to test your app when available.
Thanks,
LK

Mini HDMI and Micro HDMI are different.
Okay so the first release is an epic fail. It tries to copy the frame, but it doesn't ever end up over HDMI. Also it takes too long to copy the frame to get smooth video, I can copy ~ 3-5fps max, which is ridiculous. There has to be a better way. And I may have it. Uno momento

[Q] Can anyone with the Epic 4G confirm the lack of TV OUT?

I read on another site that Samsung/Sprint removed the TV OUT function from the EPIC 4G. I am specifically referring to the 3.5mm to RCA cable that would allow you to view whatever was on your phone on your TV.
I know that you can use the DLNA function to stream to your DLNA TV/PS3/XBOX or buy the USB to HDMI to do this but I already bought the NOKIA cables that would allow me to use the 3.5mm jack to do the same thing (though not HD) like you can on the Captivate and Vibrant.
Thanks to anyone who can take the time to confirm/deny this rumor. I sure hope this is BS coming from an EPIC hater.
BTW: I ordered my phones (1 for me and 1 for my wife) through Sprint Telesales and now have to wait for them to ship otherwise I would check this myself

Okay, if the Verizon Fascinate has Tv-out his argument will be invalid. I guess we'll just have to wait for that or froyo to learn more unless someone else has anything to offer.
I've also heard that the epic has a different 3.5mm controller, so that may be one clue

i know my new sharp aquos quattron or whatever it is has a similar issue. i can play files via usb. i can send the tv pics/music.. but no video. ive decided to just have it link up with my ps3 instead as it can handle video streaming.
Verizon's Fascinate does not currently support TV out either.
Just for kicks.. has anyone tried hooking it up and see if the option appears?? i dont have a cable to test with
I got one on ebay and tried so without another compatible device, I'm not sure if I just got a bad cable or not. I even tried using white and red as the video just in case cable was funky, but didn't work. I swear I read somewhere that the option would appear after plugged in, but no tv out option appeared in sound/ display settings.

Cheap Wifi Video streaming from Nexus 7

Edit:
So it seems the consensus is that this will probably not have HDMI out (through a cable)
But obviously it can stream it's video over wifi (or bluetooth?)
So I want to know if anyone knows of a cheap solution. Like using Apple TV or Nexus Q (But MUCH cheaper)
Also, would wifi streaming, say Netflix, AND wifi streaming to the TV destroy the streaming quality of Netflix?
Let's figure this out!
So I don't think this has an HDMI port (Maybe micro to Hdmi?)
But does anyone know cheap wifi HDMI out solutions? Like Apple TV, but CHEAP.
This is one thing worrying me about this tablet. ($300 for the Q is horrible)

That's may not the same model that's shipping though. We may not get this feature on the consumer version.
Check out around the 9:00 mark of the keynote. Whether it makes it to production is to be seen but obviously they are putting video out.. also on the Google Play Store under tech specs they don't mention the Galaxy Nexus has MHL.. but it does
Once MHL is confirmed I'll probably have to order up another Nexus 7 to use as a media server. I'd just mount it to my stereo cabinet and run it through my receiver. Too bad the HP Touchpad never had MHL support, it'd give new life to my soon to be retired device.
The Q would upset and confuse anyone who didn't already know what it was if they saw it in my living room. I'm not very impressed with the amplifier on it either.
Yeah If they confirm MHL I'm in. It does look like they had special versons with hdmi though. I'd be saddened to learn that I can't hook it to a tv. It was a deffinate buy for me before but without hdmi I'm out.

So prbly no HDMI, and if it has MHL we won't know until it comes out. So we may as well prepare for it not having MHL.
If it has it, well then this thread could be useful for a different device.
If it doesn't, then this thread is important
Either way. This will help people feel better about their purchase if they know there is an HDMI alternative.
I agree. I hope there is MHL but if there is another HDMI alternative I'm all ears.

Actually I re-watched the videos, and the only cord they are using is plugged into the Micro USB SO:
A) There is MHL (at least on the display, but why not all of them?)
B) They were just keeping it charged while they streamed the video through the Nexus Q (more likely)
If only we could ask someone that just got one free at the event!
Edit: Just tweeted to Aaron Baker of PhoneDog.com who received a free Nexus 7 at the I/O to let us know in his full review if it has MHL/HDMI and Tablet support. We will see what happens.

Prototype Build TP with HDMI

So I just snagged a prototype/developer model Play that does have HDMI out on it and I'm wondering in advance what the best choice of bootloader and/or firmware to use for maximum performance and battery life without interfering with the HDMI out functionality.
I did my best to sort through the ten million "I wish my Play had HDMI out" threads and what I could glean from MAYBE legit prototype discussion threads sound like it probably has parts of its modem removed to make room for the HDMI (which is fine since I want it as a portable/dockable game device) and that battery life might have a problem, which I would guess is from constant signal search that can probably be disabled.
But does anyone here actually have one of these? I'd love to benefit from someone else's experience with them instead of having to make all the mistakes myself and figuring everything out the hard way!
Thanks!
Mind posting some photos?

I actually -just- won an auction for one of these off of Ebay... So I like the OP want to know, what's the real story with these units? I know they were display units for the stores to show off but besides that I mean. Do they have functional cellular radios? Are they unlocked? If I do a system restore through the normal menus will it screw itself over and never be able to use the HDMI properly? Does plugging in the HDMI turn off the XP's screen or does it splits its horsepower between the two screens?
Couldn't pass up on buying one, seems like a piece of history. I will post pics when it arrives (like a week) if that interests anyone.

LoL yeah me too! I'm not at all surprised the guy who bought the other one also came here straight away with exactly the same questions as I have. There's still one left, if anybody wants it. We haven't received them yet but you can see the pictures the seller posted on eBay if you just search for "xperia play hdmi". I agree it would be nice to see the actual mainboard and once I give mine a complete function check I'll probably open it up and take some pictures.
I think that you have something different in your roms/kernels what let your Plays to use hdmi. So there is probably now roms or kernels u can use without loosing hdmi. Only root and mods

I actually sold my Xperia PLAY about a month ago, sad to see it go but I moved on to a Nexus 5 in December and it took me all that time to let it go. Mine was not an HDMI model though, it was an early AT&T model without the branding.
For those curious I added the photos from my old prototype Xperia PLAY.

Thanks!

Would love to see some pics as well.
There are some ROMs out there that are meant for those without radios/cell planes, such as Xperia NXT Gaming, but your HDMI might not work properly.
There were stories a few years ago about someone who said they had a prototype unit, but not many actual cases. One guy even tried modding an HDMI in there.

Yep that's one of ours. I'm surprised we got them for the price we got them for, and that the seller described them to be "for parts" which would have been a shame. Unless I get some nasty surprises when it arrives I wouldn't sell it for twice the price I paid.

Three of a kind at best
Always wanted to get my hands on a prototype play with hdmi never could find one:/

The phone showed up in immaculate condition, as if it had never been used. The HDMI port is very rough as you can see, with exposed circuit board. At this point I haven't been able to get the HDMI to work - I can't find any options for it in the settings and trying two different HDMI cables on two different displays hasn't worked yet. It seems the seller was correct when he said the phone couldn't connect to its network, as putting my valid ATT Sim card didn't get me signs of life. WiFi works fine. If anyone has any questions or any ideas on how to make the HDMI work, I'm all ears.
You can dial *#*#7378423#*#* goto service test - hdmi test. Few options there to test.
I'm also curious about this, such a presious gem you have

Thanks for the suggestion, I tried that and the video test did not display on the one monitor I have access to at this hour.
The HDMI status options all show as being "unknown"
The EDID reading option/ Edid Hex Data reads as "unknown"
Maybe someone who used this model before you flashed soft from other Play version and coz this u lost hdmi drivers in rom/kernel

Also did you try the hdmi option in service settings?

yes
i had this phone with HDMI port 3 years age and used that for telecom exhibition
if you search on xda can find my post , i remember that i uploaded video and pictuesr both . but like always , some childish guys tried to say that was a lie ...
this is a real phone but is limited and just was for special offers to Sony-erricson like exhibitions .
I remember those posts everyone knew the phone was real lol they just didn't believe you had it because there were never any pics or vids that I remember anyway. But since you had the phone why aren't you telling him how to get hdmi working instead of sharing drama about how onetime childish people didn't believe you?

Well I finally received my phone, postage due I might add. It is indeed in practically new condition and mine came with retail packaging including headphones and a little dock but no charger for whatever reason. The HDMI output seems to be a Mac style mini display port aka "Thunderbolt". I'm a real Apple hater so I had to order an adapter. When it arrives, I'll post my results. In the mean time I am willing to pull the back off and take some pictures of the board if people are interested in that sort of thing.
It reports
Baseband version 7X30A-AAABQMAZM-1290_21-42
Kernel version 2.6.32.9-perf
Build number 3.0.1.B.0.270
None of which seems out of the ordinary for an early build I guess... Anyway, I definitely won't update anything - other than rooting - until I get my display port adapter. Hopefully it will simply send an identical 854x480p signal out the port as it sends to the screen and it'll be as simple as that - one can only hope.
