New to MyTouch, am I screwed? - myTouch 3G, Magic General

I've played with Android before on my Touch Diamond so I decided to pick up a used MyTouch from Craigslist. Like a n00b, I didn't do enough research. I ended up with a MyTouch 3G with a headphone jack (1.2). I only use TMO ToGo Prepaid and was thinking I could just pop in my sim and it would work. Unfortunately though, I can't get past the activation. Is there any way to get past this? Rooting it? I've searched and can't find any mention of activation hacks. Being 1.2, the 4-corners trick doesn't work. I can't find any way to force it to activate via Wifi. Screwed?
Also, mine shows no bars and an "X" on the bars. Is that normal pre-activation, or am I doubly screwed?

4 corners doesn't work on a lot of devices. can't activate over wifi. you should be able to root and flash a rom that doesn't require activation (cyanogenmod is the most popular). you could also just find a friend with t-mobile and data. and sometimes people at the t-mobile store are nice enough to let you borrow their card to activate.

Thanks, it looks like there's nothing I can do myself. I can't root unless I enable USB Debugging. I can't enable USB Debugging unless I root and flash cyanogenmod. Ugh.

try this: http://www.gotontheinter.net/content/faq-unlockingactivating-g1-or-adp1-without-sim-card
skip step 3 and 4, because they don't apply to you
this SHOULD let you turn on wifi so you can set up your google account
let me know if this works, I never tried it on a non-rooted phone

Thanks, but the reason I can't root is also the reason why I can't try modifying settings.db, that is adb can't work on my phone. To use adb requires USB Debugging to be enabled, and it is apparently not enabled by default.

I would suggest starting off by rooting with a Goldcard.
Refer to my signature.
Then you should be able to flash any 32b custom rom (such as Cyanogen).
Once you have root, you should be able to skip the activation process.
The most difficult part would be to making the goldcard.

Thanks, but that is the reason I can't root, because I can't make the goldcard without having the CID, and to get the CID requires USB Debugging to be enabled so I can run ADB commands. I can't turn on USB Debugging without getting past activation. Without USB Debugging = No ADB commands. No ADB commands = No goldcard.
Is there any other way to get the CID? I haven't found any. I can run FASTBOOT commands in FASTBOOT mode, but I haven't found any way to find the CID that way.

Not personally, no. I can probably drop by a T-Mobile store and beg when I find some time, but it's not real close. If I can get an unlock code for it, I could probably borrow an AT&T sim from a coworker with an iPhone data plan. I'd feel real awkward to ask because I'm not real close with the coworkers that I know for sure have data plans.

i am also stuck with the same thing...how did you do yours...
only being able to fastboot and not adb nothing can be done....i have friends with ATT data plans but since the phone is not unlocked cant use that too...
guess im screwed....

I'm on T-Mobile, and they will send an unlock code for free - they have certain requirements before they will send an unlock code, but I qualified, so they sent me an unlock code (took about a week and a half to get). With the code, I unlocked my phone and then borrowed my mom's AT&T SIM card to activate the phone. She doesn't have a data plan, but all AT&T plans apparently have data available in $2 increments.
Then I turned on USB Debugging, went through the whole rooting procedure, and upgraded to Cyanogenmod 6.
However, I'm screwed because my phone has no service with my T-Mobile SIM card. It worked fine with my mom's AT&T SIM so I have no idea wtf is going on. Hard reset, reflashing, nothing fixes it. Only idea I have is maybe my 1900MHz radio is shot and 850MHz still works since AT&T is on 850MHz and TMO is on 1900MHz. I don't even know if it's physically possible for that to be the case, but nothing else explains it.

Not sure if this would help but did you wipe before you reflashed? Sometimes a good wipe fixes odd bugs. I know one time I had trouble getting any service with T-Mobile for some odd reason. So I wiped and reflashed my CM5 ROM. The problem went away after I did that, however I noticed you mentioned hard reset. I'm not too sure what you meant by that. So sorry if hard reset is the same as wiping.

I didn't ever try wiping with the stock ROM, and I can't try it now because I'd have to borrow my mom's SIM card to activate again and I don't see her but once every few months.
I did try every wipe option in Amon Ra Recovery, many, many times, and none of those wipe options helped. That's what I meant by hard reset since I couldn't find any other way to wipe than through Amon Ra. If there are any other ways to wipe, I'd love to try.
I even thought maybe TMO blocked the IMEI, but I talked to them and they confirmed it is not blocked.

**HELP**Downgrading MyTouch/Magic to 1.5 to root

I got my mytouch(the older one, the one without the headphone jack). I have been trying to root it ever since then. but I can not do it at all.
1. I can not access my phone through adb NO MATTER WHAT, I have tried this in xp,7 and ubuntu. I always get no device found, but in fastboot mode, it is able to pick it up!!! Is there something that I need to enable on the phone? Or should the phone be in any special mode?
2. I have tried to downgrade to 1.5 using the sapimg, but it did not work at all. I would not mind using the goldcard method even though I have been advised not to do so. Even If I chose to use the gold card method, I could not do so since my adb method is not working properly!!!
Also my mytouch is unlocked, if that makes any difference.

I rooted my phone using unlockr.com, so unless you can prove things, dont start making statements about them.

This means your phone came pre installed with 1.6, you will have to use goldcard. There is no other way to root your phone.
Provide your phone information through fastboot. Turn off your phone, do back+power, then write your SPL (e.g 1.33.0004), radio (e.g. 2.22.19.26I), stuff like that is all on there. Then you can turn off your phone by holding down power again

Phone permanently locked to AT&T and need help!

I stupidly wrote down the wrong sim unlock code given to me by ATT on my phone and I guess I entered the wrong code too many times. I called ATT tech support and they said that my phone is locked permanently ATT now.
Is there a fix around this or am I screwed?
Thx

As far as I know, you are SOL and is locked permanently to ATT, unless theres a way to unlock it via the service menu after a code has been inputted wrong.
Go to Cellunlocker.net and talk to someone in support about getting a code that unlocks your sim-locked status. It's not the code to unlock your phone, it's the code that resets the perma-lock state of the phone.
I guess i am SOL i called cell unlocker and they said they dint have the software to do it
Did you try the method listed for unlocking your phone from the service menus - without an unlock code?
I have not seen it explained, but it appears to me that by disabling the SHA256 network lock, you are basically getting rid of the requirement for the unlock code that is cryptographically dependent on the IMEI.
I did it on my AT&T phone and plopped in a T-mo sim and it worked fine:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2285431
I am not responsible for anything you may mess up though.

You might have one other option that I know of that might work, might not work, or might make things worse. It is the "Free unlock" menu method in the general section. I am assuming you haven't tried it already. Normally I tell people to stay clear of it because of the slim chance it could screw your phone up, but in your case, I'd say it's already screwed up.
Follow the directions and see if restoring your "Golden backup" (NV restore) resets the cell locks on your phone. You can also try thing like turning SHA256 "On", or "Off" and see if it makes a difference. The reason the free unlock method works for some and not others all depends on what info resides in your phones NV backup. For some, it restores full phone functionality without network locks (sim unlocked), for others, it restores exactly what is already on the phone's NV memory (still network locked), and for others, it restores a backup that screws the phone up. There is a slim possibility that if you restore the NV data via the hidden menu, you might restore your phones original sim locked state and then be able to use the code with SHA256ON or maybe Off.
The risk you take if you try it is completely yours.
It might help, it might not help, or it could make it worse. Good luck.
Would flashing back to stock rom work? I am still fairly new with android devices coming from iphones so i dont want to mess with it if it has absolutely no chance of working. The phone is still working fine just can't unlock it.

Flashing back to stock is not going to cure your problem. You're kind of hosed at this point. Scott's suggestion is probably your best bet, BUT you could end up with no phone working at all. If you can still get phone service I'd leave it as is and give up ever unlocking.

How to enable HotSpot without a subscription and without unlocking or rooting.

You only need your sim tool and the phone.
1) open the sim tray but don't take out the sim card.
2) push the sim tray back in the phone.
3) wait 4-5 seconds and then activate hotspot in the settings->more->tethering
If these directions don't help you can see my video on youtube.
Don't ask how I found this but it works for Verizon and AT&T. I have not tested this on any other carriers.
This works by turning on the hotspot while the phone is provisioning. If you attempt to do this too soon or too late you will trigger the subscription check.
You will need to perform this everytime you want tethering if you turn tethering off or reboot the phone.
I can confirm this works on 5X connected to Sprint. SIM tool has now been added to my keychain.
Can you not just add the provisioning line to the build.prop to negate the need to do this?
It's worked since as long as I can remember.

You should be able to use ADB through TWRP recovery once you unlock the bootloader and flash recovery. Pull the build.prop, edit it, then push it back.
Edit: don't mind me, didn't realize this was if you don't want to unlock anything

To everyone else saying build.prop editing. It says in the title WITHOUT unlocking and rooting.
For T-Mobile, I'm able to do it while completely stock (non-rooted) but unlocked, simply by issuing the following command:
Code:
adb shell settings put global tether_dun_required 0
And also using a user agent spoof extension in Chrome to report that I'm running as googlebot.
Works like a charm.

I read somewhere that the latest update patched this. Not official, but stumbled across someone else saying it no longer worked on 6.0.1. Might have been from another post here on xda somewhere.
Hi guys, I have a question,
I have been able to use my data connection without any problem on my firefox OS device. Since I use my nexus 5X, the is not possible (a message it telling me to active this feature on att.com event though i am using H2o Carrier (which uses att network) )
So here is my question, how come the nexus 5x which is suppose to be unlock cannot do internet tethering ? Why did it work with FirefoxOS but not Android ? How do they block that ?
Cheers
O_S
Yeah 6.0.1 blocked it you can do it still but when you connect the device to it you can't get internet connection.. Sucks..
Hopefully there will be a work around, or Foxfi will get updated to work
Thank you OP for the tray trick !!! - works great (wait about 3 sec) on Moto X (2013) running 5.1 on Cricket (was AT&T b4)
Might need to root and make it permanent as it's not convenient to take case off and carry a pin around each time, but better than nothing...
Update: got a Nexus 5x with 6.0.1 and the trick works as well, though more often than not hotspot is on BUT no data/LTE symbol. But I got it to work at times. more finicky.

how can you write to necessary file without root access ? (from command shell I supposed)
When you mention chrome extension, how does that come into play (browsing on your computer, but how does it get wifi tethering access anyway ?)
Please explain (got Moto X 2013 running 5.1 non rooted originally AT&T but unlocked on Cricket now).
Hey everyone! So, I'm new to the whole Nexus and rooting thing but have used Android for a while (mostly HTC and Samsung stock devices). I came to Nexus because I thought I'd give it a shot and I'm super pleased with how it works, how fast it is, etc compared to non-Nexus devices. I went and downloaded the Android SDK tools, copy and pasted all the instructions, and got all ready to make this build.prop edit until I realised that the cable is a USB-C and it doesn't plug into my computer. The entire week I had this device I just assumed the charger was USB-A on the brick side and USB-C on the phone side, but alas, it's not. So, silly question, what cables are you all using to do this stuff? Is there an adapter on Amazon you recommend over another because I see a lot!
Thanks in advance!
Cheers!
Interesting the 5X is different from the OG Nexus 5 in this feature. I'm on the $30/mo t-mobile plan, and I just swipe down from the quick settings menu to turn on the hot spot. My Nexus 5 is not rooted.

yes i am still looking for a solution, i would appreciate your help
what i did is that i bought a service on eBay, he emailed me an apk called Quick_Fix.apk ( to show the hidden menu ) and these are the instructions
Look for the HiddenMenuCall app on your phone and open it, then scroll and select the following menus & sub menus within:
1-IOT(CDG2).
2-LTE setting
3-Operation Mode.
4-Lab Network (V20 will now restart)
Then Turn Off - Insert SIM card and restart and it will be unlocked
that is all i did, and it was supposed to work but it didn't on mine
I see. So you are trying to pull up a hidden menu on your v20?
What setting are you trying to alter? Wireless tethering? Are you rooted (I am going to take a stab here and say no, you arent)?
Are you trying to carrier unlock your phone? I'm just trying to figure out what you are trying to accomplish?

Bypass lock screen without root or ADB

Got a question that I am not sure has a proper answer (and yes I know this is a sus question to begin with).
I have an old s7 and I forgot the pattern to unlock it. Developer mode is enabled but since I can't get through the lock screen I can't whitelist my PC on the phone when I connect it. I need to access my google authenticator app because I want to export it to my new phone (use to have it on my new phone but for other reasons it got wiped). I've tried using the samsung service mode code to put it into service mode from the emergency call dialer but that doesn't work. Is there anything else I might be able to try?
use droidkit or drfone screen unlock? I think dr.fone has a free trial, maybe you can screen unlock with it. Or just look for any other 3rd party free screen unlocker. They usually don't need root, nor adb.
Ive tried both but both don't support the s7. At this point I would pay for one of these apps to get into this damned thing.
Is it's bootloader unlocked?

I wonder if there is a way to use Odin to flash TWRP for a single boot. It might be enough to push the ADB keyfile to the directory or to delete the sqlite keys for the pattern.

I wonder if I could mount the system partition that way or not bootloader aside. Unlocking the bootloader would kill all the data too which is a no-no.
It does seem possible to flash TWRP on some devices without unlocking the bootloader. How would I go about booting from it with fastboot without flashing it if I tried it? edit: nevermind I know how to do it.
I assume I would have to use the herolte img to try to get it to work since there isn't one specifically for the sprint variant.
Well I tried but I can't seem to read the phone with fastboot. I tried Odin and it predictably threw out the flash because it wasn't properly authenticated either.
Did you install the correct drivers? You need the samsung usb drivers for odin, and some adb and fastboot drivers for adb.

Yeah, of course. I have the Samsung drivers and I tried working with linux and had the same issue. Feels like my only recourse at this point is to setup a kali nethunter.
You also need to manually install adb and fastboot drivers for your device, which for me is pain, but maybe it'll be easy for you.

Yeah I have them both. For some reason though Fastboot just doesn't see the device. I tried pinging it with the linux version and its vendor id but it didn't do any good. Kind of a real pain this is becoming. I may just convert my old nexus 11 into a kali nethunter and try to brute force it.
Still haven't found a solution and now I am feeling the consequences. My Nintendo 2FA is on this damned phone. Going to try to call support and get it removed tomorrow but its a real big pain.
Metablaster,
Is there an update to this?
My wife's S8 is pattern locked, she didn't set up a Samsung account prior, and the Google Find my Phone web tool PIN option has been changed/ deleted. Maybe there's an older html version of this somewhere?
ADB keeps coming back that the device access is "unauthorized" even after reboot, so although I thought I enabled USB Debugging before giving her the phone (it used to be mine), she may have restored to factory without enabling it again.
Kali will delete all of the data like a factory reset so that defeats the purpose except to just get use of the phone at all again.
Is there anyone on here that knows of a professional grade service that can do this?
So frustrating...! Why , upon proof of ownership, can't something be done?
Please pm me, I'd want to try the MD-Next option first.
If I run the risk of losing her data than anything more intrusive probably isn't worth it.

MetalBlaster,
I did manage to get the S8 to boot into Recovery Mode, please PM me about trying the MD-Next step via USB bridge.

Have you already tried to unlock the device with a locked SIM?
