[GUIDE - YMMV] Fix light leak (and maybe screen separation) - EVO 4G General

Okay... I admit, I didn't come up with this, but I can confirm it, with some pics.
I had pretty severe light leak under the buttons, but no screen separation, so this may or may not fix that.
I bet you've all heard about the seemingly crazy idea about taking a hair dryer to your screen and fixing separation, but it works!
Here's how I did it:
Turn the phone off.
Put the hair dryer on HIGH! This is important
Hold it about 1cm (~.5") away from the area that effects you, I held it there for about a minute and a half.
Press down AS HARD AS YOU CAN on the affected areas, seriously, don't be afraid of breaking it, press hard to make sure it sticks.
Hold it there for about a minute or so, until it cools down
Turn the phone on and enjoy no light leak
Some tips, it should be too hot to touch. I couldn't hold mine without holding it in my shirt. Seriously, I heated the front of the phone, and the kickstand was way too hot to touch.
Anyway, if you had any doubts about trying it, don't worry, it works and there are no ill affects.
Here's a photo of the phone afterwards, sorry but I didn't catch a before shot, but I did have light leak. 003 Nova bought on June 20th btw.

Awesome!
Thanks for posting your results and even attempting it.

Hmm... but what if I have a ZAGG on my screen?. with this melt it?!.

Oh man, that is a hard situation. The HTC Evo's front screen is quiet tough though, geniusdog actually mentions taking an EXACTO knife to it and it held up against the abuse. If your light leakage isn't bad, I would just leave it be, but if you want to fix it, I would just ditch the shield.

I don't quite know the melting point of the stuff, but if it doesn't melt it, it will probably get a little squishy & stretchy.

Like he said. The screen is REALLY tough, I don't have a scratch on mine and I haven't been exactly easy on it in the month I've had it. I've been torture testing it since mine is getting swapped Tuesday anyway and I'm quite pleased with it's durability.
About the only ways I can think of to scratch it are some types of sand will tear it to shreds, and try and keep diamond rings away from it
I would guess this glass is ~6-7 on the Mohs scale, which means most things can't scratch it. For the non-science majors out here, the Mohs scale runs from 1-10 and is a measure of hardness. 6 is pretty tough, that means very few things can scratch it. Diamond is a 10, it'll tear it up, a lot of sand, especially white silica sand, is about a 7 or 8, so it will scratch it up without too much difficulty.
Look it up if you want, but most things won't scratch it unless you live on the coast & have a ton of bling
EDIT: By the way, yes I did do the EXACTO tests. Just because it didn't hurt my screen, doesn't mean you should take a knife to your expensive plastic & glass device Also, you should worry about the camera lens more than the LCD, the LCD seemed damn near indestructable to me, but the lens was as easy to carve up as a Thanksgiving turkey. Like seriously, it's REALLY easy to scratch, so I would cover it with clear tape like I do. It doesn't affect image quality, but it protects it quite well.

Hahaha, made my day. About to try this fix with some leakage in the lower right corner. Will report back.
EDIT: I can verify this works, but you need FINGERS OF STEEL. My fingers hurt from pushing down for so long. Also, check to make sure, and if it didn't work, just keep trying it again. Took me about three repeats.

Yeah it can be a bit of a pain lol. I thought about using a clamp but it wasn't worth the effort of tracking one down in my workshop lol
Also I did forget to mention it may take a few tries.
The first time I did mine it only fixed the center 2 buttons (where I was pressing) so I had to heat it again to get the outer two (pressing on the corners this time)

I found my own fix after trying several different things including tightening the torx screws, using a hair driver and clamps, and an expo dry erase marker. I read a post about using plastidip which I had, but unfortunately it was dried out. I then decided to use something else I had around. A fine tip black paint maker (Decocolor - LINK). I dabbed the tip on a piece of paper several times to get a little paint on the tip. I then carefully ran it across the edge where the light was leaking which allowed a very small amount of it to drip down in the crevice. I then ran a q-tip and a paper towel along the edge to make sure any that got outside of the crevice was removed. Now I have no light leakage. The paint is permanent, waterproof (not that I will be testing that) and will be easy to reapply if I ever need to. It also takes very little skill and the markers can be found at a local Michaels or arts/crafts store.
On a side note, the hairdryer/clamp method did help a little, but this paint maker did the job the rest of the way.

Yeah, I saw that video, quick question about that though, what version was he sporting?
I have the 002, but my girlfriend has the 003. her screen has light scratches at the bottom where the buttons are. So, with that, did HTC change out the glass on the front in the revision as well as the screen? (some of the screens anyway.)

I didn't actually make that video. I did the test myself yesterday.
I have an 003 and I couldn't manage to scratch mine no matter how hard I tried, and I tried lol. I used a kitchen knife, nada, scissors, nope, EXACTO, zilch, and a pocketknife, and once again, nothing.
I don't have any sand laying around to try, but I'm sure it could scratch it though. After all, sand is used in making glass, so it has to be harder

I figured you didn't make the video, I was just sayin'.
..what screen does your 003 have?. I'm pretty sure my girlfriends is the Epson, it looks more vibrant then my screen, so, I'm only assuming mine is the Nova.
if you say yours is the epson too, I'll be a bit confused as to how she managed to scratch the freaking screen. lol

with me i actually made the problem worse, well sorta.. i had the light leakage that really was only visible when the lights were off and thought id give this a try.. but i used a heat gun but not on a crazy hot setting, i had it set to 3 which is sorta like a hairdryer.. well i got the glass hot then laid a folded piece of paper towel on the front where the screen separation was and laid a flat piece behind the phone to prevent scratches.. i then put in into a vice and sorta tightened it but not enough to where id have to worry about the screen cracking.. i had it setting in there for around 3 minutes or so then took it out.. the leakage isnt really there anymore but now a have a bright dot of light around an inch from the bottom of the phone which can be seen with the lights on.. im like damn, i shoulda left my phone alone, the dot isnt too big probably the size of a period but its a bright one.. bummer me!!

I must tell my girlfriend I need her hair dryer now!

I have a Nova lol, but I really doubt they changed the glass. Does she have any diamonds? Sapphires will do it too? Near the beach?

Sounds like you put a little too much force into the vice lol. Whoops

no diamonds or rings, and about 80 miles from the beach.. sooo.. those aren't it. I think it's the little metal "things".. like, the little brass nubs on jeans?. when she slips it in her pocket. that is the only thing I can think of.

Just curious mainly, but isn't this direct hot heat bad for the screen?

I have light leakage below the buttons like you all, but I also seem to have some above the button row at the bottom of the screen. I notice it when I am reading my phone before I got to bed, if I have a paragraph of black text, the bottom row that is half on/half off the screen is faded from the light making it hard to read. I'm wondering if this fix would help this too.

change the angle you're looking at the screen. But seriously though I think everyone has this it's only visible when you're looking down on the screen when it's held at an angle.

Probably. That's why you should turn the phone off and not turn it back on until it's cooled down.

Hmm I'm not sure. About the only minerals I can think of that could scratch it are diamond (duh) topaz corundum & maybe quartz. That's assuming these screens really are ~6 which I'm assuming they are.

cool, I'm going to try this later today. I can't believe that guy put his phone in a VICE hahah, I will not be trying that one.

Don't carry in your back pocket... I've now got a damaged screen

not broken, just damaged - when the screen is off I've now got a multicoloured rainbow oil-slick effect along a strip about .5cm by 3cm vertically down the middle of my device which is particularly visible when you can see the reflection of light onto the screen (like the sky). Not quite as bad when the screen is lit (but of course still evident with the black homescreen background).
I think i did it by having it in the back pocket of my jeans while driving (never seemed to be a problem sitting on sofa's etc but i guess car seats are a bit firmer. Bummer. Side pocket from now on.
edit. To clarify, I'm not moaning, just saying...
You'd be insane to carry anything in your back pocket anyway, least of all a potentially €700 device... pickpockets love ass...pockets
You're in the habit of sitting on your mobile phones?
I feel for you I did the same with my sony X1
haha why did you have it there? Don't fick any phone made for that
Hahah reminds me of a past friend who went through 4 2nd gen. iPod Nanos because she sat on 'em.

Not even the side pocket is safe. Try the shirt pocket or just holding it when you walk (gets you the most awesome stares when shopping). I do it with my X1 all the time. There is a post about how the X1 gains this dude quite alot of attention, I can say I have had a taste of that too, but only by holding!
Edit, Here is the thread:

Hah, the same thing happend to my Blackstone after I put some protection film on the screen. I could'nt use the phone more after that as the screen got way less sensitive and did'nt respond normally. So I had to upgrade to a Leo
Too bad though that the same thing can happen on Leo, I was hoping that they had fixed that "disease"..

i recognise it is my own fault - but I have been carrying giant handsets around since my ipaq and SPV M1000 and this is the first time I have had this error. I usually carry it in my side pocket, not quite sure why it ended up in the back one - probably shoved it in while manhandling two kids.... hey ho.
On the bright side <trying very hard to search for a bright side> i'll have to upgrade sooner to a nice HTC Bravo....

Close, the actual text is "Do not apply excessive pressure on the screen and the device to prevent damaging them and remove the device from your pants’ pocket before sitting down."
I always put mine in my left pants front pocket. Never had a problem but if a devise it too large, it's not very pretty.
I also find putting this on the front shirt pocket a little risky as it tends to drop out when I bent over. Too bad there are no cases with a belt clip for this at the moment.

Wilbur,
Long shot this but it's a method I have used before.
Get yourself a very soft and clean old handkerchief.
Next put a little washing up liquid in a small cereal bowl of warm water.
Now dip a corner of the handkerchief into the mixture; make sure the cloth is damp, NOT WET.
With the device switched off wipe the screen in vertical swipes from top to bottom with the damp part of the handkerchief.
Once you have completed this get another dry, soft clean handkerchief and using the same vertical movements polish the screen. Make sure you don't have any grit under the handkerchief. Also make sure that your handkerchiefs are as old as possible as they tend to be at their softest then,
Once done switch on your device again and see if the screen is clear.
Has worked for me but no guarantees. Worth a try though.
Cheers

I'm not being funny but anyone who keeps a phone like this in their back pocket shouldn't be surprised or moan if it gets damaged. One of the unavoidable side effects is that all of your upper body weight is pressing down on the phone when you're sitting down. I have never kept any phone in my back pockets, and that includes work ones I don't care a toss about.
Bad luck but a lesson learned and all that.

Thanks - I'll try it anyway, but the rainbow/oil effect appears to be beneath the glass screen.
I would think it goes without saying to not sit on your phone, no matter what surface you might be sitting upon...I don't know anyone with an absorbent enough butt that can pull that off safely. It's one thing to carry it carefully there, or better yet in your front pocket temporarily but to sit on your phone!?!

Dust under the Screen!

Well, I just noticed earlier today that I have a bunch of dust forming in the bottom left had side of the screen. Looks like between digitizer and LCD. Already called in an RMA. Pics to follow (once wife is home with camera).
Here is the pic.
Bump, for everyone to see the pic.
I've heard of dust getting under the screen, but damn that's pretty bad. Have you tried calling TMO, and have them exchange it for a new phone? I just can't see why they wouldn't do it. Plus, you're still under the 14 day exchange period, no questions asked.

Yeah, sorry, to be more specific, for employees (me) you have to RMA the phone, then once received and verified, they will send you another. Yes, its a BS process, so as a customer, you don't have it too bad! Haha, anyways, process is in motion.
I thought I was the only one! While, not as bad as yours I have debris collecting in the same spot! I am sending both phones I got back. I am going to use this post to demonstrate that this is potentially a flaw in the design. What a bummer, I love this phone but I can't afford for there to be a gap for dust to enter under the screen. So glad I saw this post.
There are multiple light leaks around the plastic housing surrounding the touch screen. Inspect the seam surrounding the top portion of the phone carefully while the display has a white web page up. My wife's MT3G Slide has four big gaps that can bee seen on the seam of the plastic housing surrounding the screen. Mine has 3 of theses gaps one of which has already allowed dust in under my screen. I cannot believe that these flaws were not found upon inspection after the units were assembled. I am so disappointed; I was really enjoying the phone. Thank goodness I am still in my buyers remorse. If this would have happened in a warranty situation I would be stuck in a loop of refurbished devices with the same issue all while being stuck in a new 2 year contract. Dodging a bullet on this one.

You were dead on with this. I thought you were referring to the hard buttons below the screen. Speaking of those buttons; that is also a design flaw as it appears dust can get under the screen there as well. As one pushes down those buttons it exposes the edge of the touch screen. I should have taken your words more seriously instead I was dumbstruck by what is an otherwise great phone.
Just checked my screen in the sun ... dust everywhere under the screen. Bye bye beautiful Espresso; you are fatally flawed.
Ahh, I found a pin sized hole under the slide behind G button. Also if you open the slide, and use your phone that it turns on the light you will notice light inside the micro usb connector. I am not sure if this means that dust can pass through it also.
Will post pic of said pinhole later when it gets a little dark here. Will try blowing in some baby powder into that hole to see if it does get into the screen.
EDIT: Pics of pinhole behind G button at the back of the slide.

Just posted in the MT3GS defective thread: this might be a larger defect than just the Slides. There's a bunch of Evo people talking about the same issue with their phones on the htc forums and the androidforums: glass is separating due to potentially faulty adhesive.

Who's getting a Galaxy S? I'm not.
I don't think the light leaks are as big an issue as I thought, so long as the adhesive seal between the digitizer and LCD is intact there shouldn't be any way for dust to get into the screen.
Hey, what kind is and where did you get that case? Looks cool!

Thats the one offered by tmobile, black back, chrome front bezel. Has a removable belt clip, so that is why you see a little circle in the middle.
I had this happen to the first slide I picked up but luckily I noticed it fairly quick and took it back the very next day. Now the replacement I have is having the same issue, granted it's 1 spec of dust under the screen but I know it will get worse with time and I'm debating on whether or not I will just return it and go back to my G1.
Mine has it now too! Just noticed it in the sun on the way into work - Mine is going to get swapped out today too...
This is a major drag!!!
My nexus has this same issue so do many others. Some people are having a hard time getting HTC to replace because of unlocked bootloaders. On the n1 the bottom left corner of the screen feels like it is not glued down all the way and dust goes under. Some are using a hair dryer to warm up the corner and pushing down on the screen to help it glue down all the way. HTC fixed mine and then when I got it back the screen was even more loose and I have more dust now than before. I'm going to wait longer before I send it back again. Hopefully this mts doesn't start doing the same thing.
I started a thread about this over in the tmo forums. It appears that it has gotten the attention of a moderator over there. If you would like to add your story to it please feel free as well as post a picture or two of the dust your screen has trapped.
Apparently I can't post links because my account hasn't been verified. The thread isn't too hard to find over there, promise.

Well, I just noticed earlier today that I have a bunch of dust forming in the bottom left had side of the screen. Looks like between digitizer and LCD. Already called in an RMA. Pics to follow (once wife is home with camera).
Here is the pic.

holy crap stop hiding your phone in the litter box!
If you turn the back light off and shine a flashlight at the screen at an angle you see this very well!
Here is mine:
I don't work in a dusty environment either, probably from my pocket. Plastic pocket protectors anyone??

white evo sanding polishing painting mod

Just thought I would share pictures of what I did. I have like 10 different colors of jelly cases I use and only one of them went with the red accents on the phone. So I sanded down the camera ring to remove the red anodizing and then polished it to a mirror finish. And I painted the red plastic under the kickstands a gloss black. Looks good with my white and black back now, and looks tons better with all my cases.
CLICK ON THE PICTURE FOR TONS OF PICTURES LOL
I think it should have came like this in the first place, not everyone is a fan of red.... and if you live in Chicago you might get shot for sporting a black and red phone lololol.
Things you will need
800-2000 grit sandpapers
masking tape
Olfa razor knife
Krylon Fusion Black Gloss spray paint - Must be this brand if you want it to be permanent
Headlight polishing kit from an autoparts store (not what i used, but close enough it would work exactly the same, not everyone has a polishing kit laying around like I do)
What to do
Take battery cover and battery off phone
Pry camera ring off with your fingernails, it comes off ridiculously easy
Tape off entire phone for work on the kickstand area
Use multiple layers of straight tape around the ends of the kickstand recess, rather than trying to bend or curve the tape.
Rough up the kickstand recess with 800grit to make sure the paint has something to better adhere to
Spray light coats until you are satisfied, 8 minutes between coats, 2 hrs after final coat
Cut around recess very exactly and carefully with a very sharp blade like an Olfa to make sure the paint doesn't peel when removing the tape.
Take all the tape off of the phone
After 24 hrs you may lower your kickstand, until then keep it up. the paint will feel dry way before then, but you WILL DENT IT by lowering the kickstand and keeping it down.
After the 24 hours tape off the entire phone again including the freshly painted area
Sand the kickstand and camera ring with 1500-2000grit
Make sure all of the pink and weird color under it is gone from the camera ring and all of the brushed lines are gone from the kickstand
Polish with just the foam pad and water from the headlight lens polishing kit.
It will look like glass
Polish any tiny scratches out by hand with a microfiber and some sort of polishing compound. I used novus heavy scratch remover as it is very gently and made for hard acrylics, some of which are harder than his aluminum for sure.
Ask me any questions, it is late and I might have left some stuff out lol.

Why would you get shot for sporting a black and red phone? Its the colors of the blackhawks and the bulls?
Looks good. Good job.
I sanded down the bezel of mine to get the red trim a while ago. I'm starting to hate it though; looks too bright.
Really wish I did something like this instead. Nice work.
That looks pretty cool.

Just a joke about the black and red prominance of vice lords - a street gang in bad Chicago neighborhoods. I don't know how popular vicelords are now days. It might have been a 90s thing.
Thanks for the comments everyone, the camera ring is VERY soft aluminum so removing the anodizing is very easy and polishing took less than five minutes. I used 800 grit to remove the anodizing, but it had been used before and it worked more in the range of 1000 to 1200 and then just a foam polishing pad on a high speed drill and a little water for first Polish and microfiber by hand with a little acrylic Polish for final mirroring.
The part under the kickstands, I took the battery cover off and taped off the entire phone with masking tape paying special attention to the edges around the kickstands area. Then sprayed with krylon fusion gloss black. Make sure you put multiple layers of tape on the entire phone so spray dust doest get in any crevices. Use automotive masking tape for around the kickstands recess so it makes a clean edge when you remove it. Sand cut the paint with an olfa razor before peeling it off or it might peel the paint where you want it to stick.
You have some better images? The one posted is a little dark and washed out.
Came out great...you're right they should have made it like that in the first place...3 questions what did u use to sand down the red ring...what did u use to polish it and what kind of black gloss paint did u use for under the kickstand...I really would love to do this to mines

Yea...I did it a few hours ago. Its my pic...and painting the kick stand area doesn't affect it at all. Feels the same.
It will feel different and will be sticky for like a day make sure to keep your kickstand up for 24hrs after painting to make sure you dont dent the paint. it will feel completely dry, but will dent very easily for a day,
glad I could inspire you sam LOL. Sand that ring a little more and then buff it like crazy. I ended up polishing my kickstand too.
And I got moar pics up in the original post.

I got it done in about an hour one night, and then the next night took me about 15 minutes. The hour was for the painting, multiple coats. Polishing only took 15.
Oh yeah I forgot to mention, if you wear out the adhesive under the camera ring tiny droplets of any silicone adhesive will work fine, just make sure you don't put too much so it doesn't seep out. And if it does, since it is silicone adhesive you can just rub it and ball it up to get rid of it.

nail polish
i (read: my gf) sanded the trim to get it rough and then used dark red polish on mine. it turned out pretty well, though it was more of a quick job at the time and i wasnt going for perfection. after about 8 months it started chipping (also, i dropped it) so i sanded another trim down fully. i agree that the reds too bright. ill probably have her repaint it again, or might try some spray paint. i had tried that first (walmart had a good red, plastic paint) but didnt prep the surface so it didnt stick. im thinking that with sanding itd be good

Picture guide to DIY Galaxy Note glass and screen replacement

Getting out of the car, I made an awkward off-balance flailing motion with my arm, and clumsily flung my Galaxy Note down firmly onto a rock in the parking lot. It make a sick little "kich" sound...

I picked it up, and found that the screen under the glass still was undamaged, and the touch interface performed as perfectly as before. I found replacement glass online for ~$20, and assumed I could replace the glass alone...
Unfortunately, I was informed that the Galaxy series of OLED pannels is laminated to the glass, and I would require the entire screen assembly. This was $225 shipped.
I still had hope I may be able to just replace the glass, but now that I had both part options available, I felt I had strong odds I would end up with a fixed device, and I began to dig in.
Remove the back cover, batter, SIM, and uSD cards.
Using a #0 philips screw driver I removed the 9 screws from under the back cover, and started prying on the two halves. Its turns out, the whole back half of the case is 1 piece, and where I was trying to pry (where you would pry if it was a Galaxy S2) is NOT the place it can split, and you need to pry between the crome lip of the case and the outside of the glass' bezel. I found starting from a bottom side corner worked best, and I could work my thumbnail around popping the little clips as I went. I started the gap in the seam very gently with a pocket knife as a pry tool.
::::: The uUSB port area needs special attention to pry it back so it slips over the protrusion! ::::
In about 5 minutes of careful edging my way around, it was pried free.
There were 3-4 little black screws that are also #0 phillips to free the mobo. It's TINY! Blows my mind to think of all the computing and communication power that is crammed into this tiny little ~10gram PCB.
Remove each of the little ribbon cable connectors by prying up on the edge with your finger nail (there are 5-6 of them I think), and a single coaxial cable connector near the corner where the thin arm intercepts the upper rectangle of PCB. I missed that cable on my first try, and thank God I was being gentle, as I nearly tore it before I saw it was still connected.
Now we can see the guts of the MoBo. Too bad the pictures are such a crappy quality from using a POS Nokia E71 to take them...
So, the job isn't over yet, and the hard part is next... Prying the glass/display panel assembly out of the bezel assembly. It is not as easy as it looks.
I do not think my method was the best approach, but it got the job done. If someone has a better method, it would be great to share it.
I first warmed the glass with a hair dryer, than began looking for a place I could pry, not entirely sure of where or how it comes apart. It turns out, the glass has to lift up out of bezel plastic area, and it's got big thick pads of adhesive strip at the top and bottom edge.
After much tail-chasing in working my way around with the exacto-knife, I realized that I was getting nowhere, as the adhesive would re-adhere the moment I pulled the blade out to work on the next area... So, I decided I would need something to act as a shim to keep the area I had pried away from re-attaching at I moved forward. I found the spare blades in my exacto-knife kit worked perfectly for this.
Eventually it gave way! Woot! When it finally released, the OLED panel delaminated from the glass, and broke into about 8 chunks, and ended my hope of replacing just the glass portion alone. I think if someone were exceptionally careful, good adhesive heating, good careful thin shim material application, they MIGHT be able to replace just the glass portion alone and not break the OLED panel. This would allow breaking the glass to actually only cost $20 if you were some sort of wizard who could de-bond the panel and other things from the glass without breaking them.
So, now that my broken screen/glass is out, I flip it over and compare it with the new one... Umm!! WTF?? The old one has a connector my new one doesn't! Sh*t!!! At this point I'm thinking I might be $1,000usd into a device that isn't going to work.
So, I'm thinking I've got nothing to lose, so I start pealing away at the layers near that connector, hoping for a miracle. Things aren't looking good.
I keep pealing away, and hey! I got down deep enough that it's pealing that thing off with the connector! Tearing away some foam-like adhesive as it goes.
Hooray! I've got some hope now! I stick that thing to the back of the new OLED panel. The glue doesn't stick anymore at all, so it's more like setting it in place and trying to line it up as best as possible. I'm not really thinking it's going to work at this point...
But I put everything back together in the reverse order of taking it apart, and WOOT!!! It all works!!! The digitizer works perfectly even though it's not even adhered to the back, and it's positional accuracy is perfect too!! I don't know how that's even possible, but it works perfect!
No dead pixels or bad spots on the screen, and not even a scratch or knick anywhere on the phone. I'm VERY VERY HAPPY!!!
Any pictures of your finished product?
Good work, sounds like a traumatic experience!
I had something very similar with my s2, dropped on a rock, broke the glass but not the screen. bought glass off ebay but couldn't separate broken glass from screen. I ended up taking it to a samsung service center who charged me £50 to replace the glass using my Ebay part which proved the glass can be replaced with right tools and technique.

Yep!
They look awful though because they are taken on this damn Nokia E71 phone that makes me want to throw it on the ground and stomp it everytime I have to use it's awful camera, and awful interface to use the camera, and awful procedure for getting pics off it... lol I sadly had to buy it just to get it's unlocked SIM card so I could run my Note off a super cheap $40 a month unlimited everything plan with no contract.
I changed mine about a week ago and almost cried when i seen that connector on the back of the broken screen. I thought i had cut something when i didnt see it attached by a connector. Then i thought about the stylus connection and bam.
I did this at 3am when i couldnt sleep without guide.

Just how fragile is the Note?
I've had the Dell Streak 5 for 15 months and have just this evening suffered my 7th (seventh - not a typo) broken screen. it fell from approximately 12 inches on to a rug, onto its corner and the lcd has leaked.
My upgrade date is Friday so i'm going to suffer half a screen for a week, but i love the size of the streak and the only thing close to it is the Note, however i don't want another phone that is going to break at the slightest knock like the streak.
Any advice would be great!

Its pretty tough. Ive had my note about 6 weeks and dropped it about 6 times. Most recently this afternoon it fell about 4 feet to the ground out of my jacket pocket. It fell on concrete and luckily it seems perfectly fine.
I have a cheapo screen protector and a cheap TPU case off amazon.

Best way to avoid breaks is, dont drop your phone. I literally sleep on my phone 5 out of 7 days. Drop it a couple times a week from waist and barely ever got a scratch. But when my 235 pound body wedge my phone between me and my car door it finally cracked after 3 months of use.
The phone can take a beating but you should protect your phone as best as you can. And if your like me, and walk around with a naked phone, you have to be able to deal with the consequences of damage. Cant blame anyone but yourself. Scratches and cracked screens are not self inflicted, its user error.

Sanded, polished, etched the back case of my phone.

THE STORY:
Since I bought this phone I wanted to do something to the back cover, I just wasn't sure what. Plus I wasn't really set on the idea of doing something to risk damaging a perfectly good (and new at the time) phone. That was until about 2 months ago when I managed to put a small hairline crack in the digitizer. Since the phone was no longer undamaged, yet still 100% functional, I figured why the hell not customize it.
I read awhile ago on XDA about some users discussing what the phone would look like with a polished look but no one was willing to take the plunge. This seemed like a good/fun project now that I didn't care if I screwed it up.
First I used 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper to remove the anodization. While this method was working, it was painstakingly slow to get to bare metal. The interesting thing about 1000 grit though, it doesn't remove the anodizing right away yet takes out a lot of the minor blemishes due to everyday use. This could in turn be used carefully to remove any dings you have without removing the anodizing. In this photo it is hard to see, but the top half near the camera hasn't been sanded, while near the HTC logo it has.

Since 1000 grit was taking too long, I switched to 400 grit. This seemed to be a decent middle ground. It wasn't too coarse to tear up the aluminum but just enough to take off the anodization a little quicker. You can see I managed to scratch the camera lens cover a bit... don't worry FYI: anodizing can be removed via a chemical bath, but who would be willing to put their whole phone in a vat of liquid....
Now that I was down to bare metal I switched to 3000 grit sandpaper I picked up from O'Reilly's Auto Parts. This smoothed out a lot of the larger scratches from the 400 grit paper and gave a good dull, almost brushed, look to the aluminum.
Now that I had a mostly blemish free surface, I used Turtle Wax Polishing Compound to smooth out any remaining small imperfections. The final step was to use Mothers Aluminum Polish to get a nice mirror finish.
I was pretty satisfied with the result, however, I had to do more...
I recently stumbled across this article on Hack A Day which gave me the inspiration to do the same.
For everyone's information, after polishing the back, this is what your phone will look like after 2 weeks of typical use (for me at least).
Before I started the etching process I had to give the back cover a good re-polishing. Once that was complete I decided on the design I wanted. Typically in most DIY etching, people use some kind of paint or resist to block the areas they don't want etched. Luckily I have an awesome brother-in-law who recently got a hold of an old plotter. So I whipped up a design in Illustrator and he took care of getting me a vinyl cutout to use. Of course I had to go with the two sites I frequent the most as my design... (yes, I know it's a little off center. I got in a hurry ha-ha)
Instead of going with a vinegar and salt solution for my etchant. I decided on a mix of Copper Sulfate, Sodium Bisulfate and table salt. I used a 45% Copper Sulfate, 45% salt, and 10% Sodium Bisulfate mix.
The Copper Sulfate comes as a chunky blue rock/crystal. So I hit it with the mortar and pestle to make dissolve better in water.
After mixing everything in hot water it was time to etch. I used an old 12 volt 1000ma wall wart I had sitting around for my power source. I wired the phone by wrapping it with 1 foot of bare copper wire and tightly wrapping the wire with electrical tape to make sure it would contact the aluminum. I wrapped another wire around a cotton swab tip and connected it to the negative terminal of the wall wart. After making sure the phone was powered off. I connected the positive terminal of the wall wart to the bare wire attached to the phone, making sure it was in contact with the aluminum by testing it with a voltmeter.
Once satisfied with the etch, I cleaned the surface off with a damp paper towel. All that was left was another polish with the Turtle Wax and the Mothers Aluminum Polish. Here is the final result.
A couple of notes:
1. The phone "seems" to get warmer than what it did before (only while watching videos or playing a graphics heavy game). I haven't checked/compared the actual stats, it's just what I have noticed while holding phone.
2. The white plastic that separates the top and bottom will get a little grey from the sanding and polishing. Goof off seems to be a great remedy to make them white again.
3. The scratches on the camera lens protective cover were buffed/polished away while using the Turtle Wax Polishing Compound. Also, the scratches were never over the center portion and did not impact the picture quality while they were there anyway.
4. The speaker phone mic will get compound/polish in it, however a light tap on a table, with the mic facing down, while the compound is still wet removes most of it. Any residual stuff left in the small hole can be removed (CAREFULLY) with the tip of an exacto blade.
5. I have not had any issues with my signal, nor any issues with the mic on the phone since doing this.
I shouldn't have to say this, but anyone who tries this, be careful. You can seriously mess up the phone and I am not responsible if you follow my examples and something goes wrong. Do this at your own risk.
If you would like to do this and have questions or need help, let me know.
-Crack

kinda looks like the m8. Can you put a clear coat or something to seal everything so that it doesnt scratch so easily?
I remember I saw on a truck show there is a sealant that could be used on chrome wheels to keep them shiny and scratch resistant but forgot what the product was called. Without some type of sealant you will get scratches back in no time flat like the I phones do. This is a great idea of if you want a chrome look and the etching is icing on the cake. You are only limited by your imagination. Could really make your phone yours.

I thought about this since this phone is mostly an experiment before picking up the new M8. I forgot who made it, but there is a spray paint that gives the "appearance" of an anodized metallic look in different colors. I know that sounds counterintuitive since I removed the stock anodization, again, this is mainly an experiment. I was thinking of doing some kind of a fade between two colors and then a clear coat.

Will work the same. Anodizing only creates a hardened surface a few microns thick. The sand paper will rub through this quickly leaving the base aluminium colour underneath. The anodize process is what is used to surface harden and create different coloured aluminium surfaces. If your brother in law expects to have a polished black surface afterwards, he won't.

First look. After sandpaper i accidentally damage camera lens. But,i try a tip from youtube with toothpaste and now is maybe better than before everything. Just perfect solution for camera lens.. Now i only need to start polishing with some polish paste and we will see resoults soon..

Will work the same. Anodizing only creates a hardened surface a few microns thick. The sand paper will rub through this quickly leaving the base aluminium colour underneath. If I recall, those microns sure put up a good fight against the sand paper...

65-70 HRC..................yes...............very hard surface after anodizing. :fingers-crossed:
Sandpaper is also not the best medium for breaking through it either, but definitely the safest to prevent damaging the aluminium below it.

Hot damn this looks gorgeous just plainly polished. The chrome/mirror look is niiiice - might have get scrubbing this afternoon.
I kind of want to sand my One down and hit it with some automotive grade basecoat and a few coats of clear coat. Anyone have any experience? Will it give me the beautiful glossy finish I think it will?
