Day with a Droid X - Droid X General

Well Hi All. Madhouse here. A buddy of mine who is a firefighter is also a part time Verizon employee, he was gracious enough to let me carry a droid X demo for the day here. It's currently 12:37 pm here and i will have access to the phone for a few more hours here. I made a few videos and took some pictures, i will try my best to answer any requests made in this thread while i have the phone. A few basic principals apply. Obviously i will not be demoing any rooting or hacking type activities on the phone because it is not mine.
Look forward to the questions! Enjoy!
(Will be editing and putting links to the videos in a minute here)
This is a test sample of the droid x's video capability in 720p

Wow, lucky! I know this may seem dumb... but an alternate home (such as LauncherPro) can be installed, right?
Also, what's the screen like? Is it very responsive/accurate?

I'll check into the launcher thing for you and the screen is AMAZINGLY accurate, i'll have a video of the multitouch vis app test up in a minute. It makes the Evo (My phone) look terrible as far as touch responsiveness.

how loud does the "loud" speaker sound compared to other smartphones? Also do you feel that the dual leds are very bright? Do the hard buttons on the front feel like they are good quality?

Woo hoo! This is important to me, so I'm glad to hear that! Makes me even more excited for this!

Hows the keyboard working? The trouble I'm having with my touch phone right now is my fingers are too big and i'm constantly making mistakes -.-

It's definitely loud. It's about as loud as an Evo 4G's or Droid Incredible's. We have all three phones present. Tested them all.

I was going to make a video but im using the Evo to make the videos, but yeah, it is SPOT ON for the touch sensitivity, makes the Evo look like it's stuck in the mud. Probably due to the FPS cap or something for all i know.

It's big, it's especially big if you turn it sideways. I'm a big guy too (6'4" 268 lbs.) The keyboard feels natural too, it's of good size. It has a multitouch keyboard as well as swype for fast typing.

Any chance you have a micro-hdmi cable handy to test playing a DIVX/AVI movie on a TV?

Awesome to hear about the keyboard! It's the only thing im iffy about considering I really was looking forward to a slide out keyboard.. but if the keys are big then no worries

I can't seem to figure out how to get it to go to original launcher much less launcher pro. It's stuck in this motoblur hybrid UI

Swype works VERY well for people with large fingers because its just dragging it across the keyboard and yes the keyboard feels great.

So you can't install Launcher Pro from the market?! I don't care about the default one, just need to know I can replace it with something else from the market.
This is what should happen (in case you don't know):
->Install Launcher Pro
->Hit home
->A box should come up asking what launcher you want to use (if you get to here it works).

Does this necessarily mean Launcher Pro is running instead of Moto's default? Or can it be on top of the original (i.e. wasting mem/cpu, running both)?
The choice it gives on pressing the home screen is just that it recognizes there are 2 registered apps that handle launcher requests, right? It doesn't necessarily kill one for the other, does it?
Only had Android for a few weeks, so sorry if silly question.

Concept for messaging app.

Check this iPhone app out that was reported on by Engadget. Looks like a cool concept and maybe something someone is interested in integrating. Just sharing the info. Enjoy!
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/05/14/emailnwalk-iphone-app-finally-lets-us-leave-the-house/
Basically for anyone that doesn't understand this it uses the camera input for the background so you can watch where your walking while typing. I think this can be done but no for devices with laggy cameras it could be done for them but I think it would be pointless. Such as the kaiser. (Though HTC camera 6.8 reduces alot of lag) Im willing to help with the UI
nice concept
lol,awesome
i might add this to my fim if its possible to hook the camera view.
I'm sorry but.... It's a nosense app!!I mean the only thing I would see behind the texting gaps would be.... THE GROUND
Think about it... when you're typing a sms you do it lookig DOWN to your device so the camera would record the ground!!!

This is true. Anyhow, I sure wasn't saying I wanted or needed this developed. I just wanted to pass it along to the community JIC someone was interested.
Keep the info coming in, ya know?
I WANT IT PLEASE would be awesome for walking and if you could use the flashlight too
I don't know how useful would this be... but it would definitely be cool!
The main use of this app would obviously be while driving or riding a motorcycle.

Is our N1 screens that good??
Someone make a onscreen keyboard test...I'd pay 99 cents
wow that's almost as fast as my keyboarding...
No way I can do this on my n1 I keep getting so many errors especially with the custom Korean keypad I'm using, it looks the same but the voice button is replaced with korean toggle. And for some reason its a lot harder to type on than the stock even though they look the same

Supposedly the multi-touch and the word correction are better on the iPhone.
Just to be objective...

its like project natal for your evo

This looks veryy interesting
It seems un-necessary! why wave over the device, when you can just touch the screen?
Makes you wonder how fast using both cameras during awake time would drain the battery.
Just wanna say I can control my phone with my mind and freak a few people out lol
I checked it out on the marketplace and it seems like no one (of those who ranked it) didn't like it. 1 star when I looked at it earlier.

It isn't on marketplace...you were looking at a garbage app this isn't affiliated with this "eyesight".
It will be interesting to see what is implemented with it.
It would be nice to throw the Evo on a HDMI dock, load up a 720p movie and use hand-motions to pause/fast-forward/rewind/volume etc.

I gotta agree, Project Natal is changing the way you play games by not using the controller at all while this is pointless cause you could just swipe. With ther phones it'd make sense though.

Bell Canada Users: Come in here if you picked up an Atrix today!

As we all know, the Atrix comes out on Bell in canada today.... we need to find out if it has HSUPA disabled and has the locked boot loader.
Post up your results of a speedtest asap when you get one!
According to a post over at Atrixforums.com HSUPA is enabled.
Not sure about the bootloader, though.

I'm gonna go fiddle around with one over my lunch break (in one hour)... here are some concerns I'm trying to have straightened out:
1) Are the icons too small because of the qHD resolution + 4" screen?
2) Are the colors washed out?
3) Is zoomed out text pixelated in the browser (PenTile screen)?
4) How bad is the Motoblur lag?
5) How smooth does flash play in the browser? (I realize it's the non-optimized-for-Tegra Flash 10.1 running)
6) And finally, is it true that Live Wallpapers make it lag?
7) Outdoor viewability?

Agreed. Motoblur is not even an issue with Launcher pro installed. Some of the enhancements like the dialer are pretty nice once the junk launcher is hidden.

1. Definately not, seems the same as any other android phone
2. Nope, colors are vibrant and look great
3. I havent noticed any problems with text... I read alot of forums and ebooks on mine without issue
4. Not noticable.
5. Quite. Ive watched lots of youtube/flash video with out issue....... very smooth
6. No clue... i dont use them as they're a battery drain
7. Excellent outdoor visability. Probably not the best, but I havent had any issues.
I'll be picking mine up today, gotta do a few other things first though. Gonna head to the gym today in about 30 minutes (as I do every morning), then I have school till 12:30, then I'm off to pick up the phone. However, I'm getting from a Chinatown store (even though I'm not Asian) since the person there gives me a discount on the phones (on top of my renewal discount), but they sometimes do get phones a little late. If they do have it, the I'll get it, and if anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to test out and answer.
One question from me though, what does HSUPA enabled mean? I know what HSUPA is, but if it's enabled, does that mean we get full speed, or does that mean that the speed has been blocked (as with the ATT version of the phone)?

Is there a lot of bloatware on the Bell version?
Just played with one... it's a nice phone. Screen is nice, not sure why people complain about it and I'm very picky with screens. Although they're right about the yellows looking odd, and also green looks pixelated but it's not that bad.
It's decently fast, didn't notice much Bell stuff on it, just the normal Motoblur crap. Put launcher pro on it to test, very smooth so good alternative. Browser pinch to zoom was a bit choppier than my Nexus S for some reason, perhaps it's because it's 2.2 instead of 2.3? Also google maps was choppier when looking at 3D buildings (downtown Toronto) than the Nexus S, probably due to the SGX540 GPU in the Nexus S being as powerful as the Tegra 2's geforce but not having to display as many pixels as the Atrix. Still, it's not that bad, liveable I suppose.
The bottom line for me was do I want a 2.2 phone knowing how much more polished 2.3 is and also giving up 40/mo unlimited EVERYTHING from Wind to pay 55/mo for 1gb of data and only 200 any time minutes on Bell. Right now I'd have to say no, but this is the best phone in the Canadian market right now (I'm excluding the Nexus S).

get it from eCrater.com from Tech Direct i believe it's called... it will be $177 total (including shipping) but i got mine in 3 days.... I ordered Thursday of last week Very good seller
I have been emailing manufacturer's because they are apparently working on software to use with the device to pair to the phones. There are no current apps that utilize call handling from Phone to Watch so the device is more of a standalone device for now. Plays videos, good camera, touch functionality is good, it got a little bit hot while i was runing ADW launcher so i uninstalled that... stock launcher runs fine. Charges fast - FM radio feature is pretty damn cool however you have to use stock headphone it comes with as antenna, they plug in via micro usb. Overall great build quality... Looks like an HTC One LOL
Looks good

In the video, the person said that the battery will last 1 and 1/2 days. (Not a China dude but I still understand their Singlish)
Btw the battery life is probably the same for other similar smart watches unless they have battery tweaks like the Qualcomm toq and the pebble smart watch which reduces or fully disables touchscreen and colour
Well the battery life i don't know because i haven't killed it yet..... The battery meter goes up and down QUITE a bit though so i can't get a real good read on the battery gauge, which is kind of frustrating...
So far i've rooted and changed the boot animation with rom toolbox pro. I cannot get the stock lock screen clock and launcher to go away tho, even after changing the filenames in /System/App which leaves me boggled. I am running ADW and a large digital clock on my homescreen and would rather unlock to that then the analog clock.
If you guys are interested, i did a quick review of the watch i will upload to youtube tonight and make new thread with video

What are its capabilities as far as connecting to a phone
Short review
I just received mine in the mail and must say, I'm pleasantly surprised. Build quality is excellent. The screen is bright and hires enough to be able to read everything. Wifi is stable and quite good, in contrary top most other China devices I have (mostly JXD). Of course the keyboard is a bit cramped and hitting the right letter is a gamble but the screen is sensitive and it doesn't take a strong touch. The interface is very smooth and responsive. I have installed a few apps which work well. The only thing that keeps crashing is Skype, which is weird as it came with the watch. There seems no way to use Google Now either (it keeps crashing) which is a pity as I don't want to even think about searching with the on-screen keyboard. The loudspeaker is okay (not great). I haven't tried using it to call anyone yet, that will be next on my list. I just noticed that the watch doesn't take micro sim cards. That quite surprising for such a small device. Now I'll have to go out and buy a regular sim card. I'm not a big fan of adapters.

It looks like a nice device I'm torn between buying this watch or just waiting around for the kickstart project Neptune Pine. Which seems to be a much more polished product
I'm also thinking about getting this or the neptune but the Pine looks so big it will make my already small wrists tiny!
I like the idea of the Pine but think I might go for the ZGPAX....

The thing is that its recognized by bluetooth as a phone so there is file transfer capability but not call handling or notification handling until the manufacturer releases an app to provide support for this... I would advise anyone who purchases to try and contact the manufacturer and get this info. Ive been looking a week now for an app in the store but have found nothing.
