two tiny holes beneath the screen in the top right? - Galaxy S I9000 General

Hey guys,
I've been staring at the top right of the Galaxy S wondering what the two small holes are beneath the screen (just about a centimeter left of the ear piece), it almost looks like a hidden LED, but I can't be sure... Does anyone know?

Proximity sensor on tmobile touch pro 2

So does anyone know where exactly is the proximity sensor is on the TMOBILE TOUCH PRO 2. theres a website with some cool skins for the Tmobile version of the TOUCH Pro 2 and they have a cutout for it on the top right corner of the earpiece and i was telling them its not there and that its on the left side of the earpiece but i want to know where exactly is it at.
Its on the left side of the ear piece. You can test it by making a call, then put your finger near the left side, above the screen...the screen will shut off.

i went online and someone mentioned that the exact spot of it is just to the right of the "C" of the htc logo near the top of the phone.
Yep, right behind the HTC logo on the top left of the face of the phone. The sensor on the far left of the earpiece is the ambient light sensor.

curious about screen brighness during a call

no problems here im just perplexed at the moment
okay this is insane how the heck does my phone know to turn of the screen when im in a call, ONLY when my head is close to it, i held the phone completely still and when i put my head close to it the screen turned off but when i moved away the screen turned on, though it was the accelerometer at first but now i dont know!
It's called a proximity sensor.
HTC and others have put this in many phones to turn the screen off when placed near your head, so you dont press buttons with your ears.
These things will probably do everything for you 5 years from now.
Just place your finger over the top of the phone screen and do it yourself. lol
The proximity sensor is located under the glass in the upper right corner of the phone, above the screen. There's also a light sensor. You can see them if you shine a bright light.

Proximity Sensor not working properly...screen protector?

So I have a PhantomSkinz screen protector installed, and I've noticed that now when I use the phone in a dimly lit room and make a call, if I pull the phone away from my face, it stays blacked out. I have to turn the light on for it to wake back up.
I'm trying to figure out if this is because of the skin or if my proximity sensor is f-d up. Anyone else experience anything like this, with or without the screen protector?
Haven't tried peeling the protector off yet, but I probably will. I already did a hard reset, thinking that might solve it...
Edit: I pulled off the screen protector, and what do you know! It works perfectly again! Is this just my phone or is anyone else's doing this? If others are having this problem, I'll call PhantomSkinz and suggest that they make a cutout for where the proximity sensor is.
It may quite possibly be the screen protector, I've noticed a small cutout in the top right of screen protectors that are designed for the n1. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that is exactly where the proximity sensor is located.
The proximity and light sensors are under the upper-(Edit: left) corner of the glass, above the screen. Most protectors don't seem to take this into account, and cover both.
Negative... the proximity and light sensors are at the top LEFT of the screen. Long story short, I carefully removed the skin, trimmed off the left corner (a bit too much), and reinstalled it. (yes, this can be done even days later if you know what you're doing. )
Anyway, the proximity sensor works fine now. Just wondering if others are having this issue or is my phone wonky?
so (my dense brain is clear) the prox-sensor is on the "top left" of screen (and opposite side of the led) as i look at the screen. . thanks!
you can easily see the 2 holes for the light and proximity sensors in the top left corner if you shine a flashlight at it.

both sensors are on the top left of the screen. the only thing in the top right is the charge LED indicator.
Can someone take a pic of exactly where the sensors are and possibly how they have "edited" their screen protector so it works better?

appreciate both of your clarifying responses. (now if i can only be convinced that nothing will happen to my phone if i root it! currently tapping the heels of my feet and repeating rooting your phone will not result in defect karma)!

I don't have a camera (except the one on the phone)... but shine a flashlight at the screen's top left region. You'll see two round openings underneath where the sensors are located.
As for modifying a screen protector to work properly... well that requires cutting material off. Either trim off part of the corner, or if you're particularly handy with an exacto knife, try to figure out a way to only cut a couple of circles or a long oval that will leave the sensors exposed. I just hacked off a corner of my PhantomSkinz, to verify if this was the problem... I have a replacement on the way anyway since this one didn't install right.
If you really want to do it right, go with a Seidio, Martin Fields, or other similar clear screen protector, as they won't have this problem.

Just tested in a dimly lit room with the Martin Fields protector which covers the emitter and detector holes. Sensor works as it should.

Yeah, I'm not surprised. I think the Martin Fields and Seidio (and any other "clear" protectors) are the only ones that will work properly without modification.
Btw, would you mind taking some pictures of your screen with the MF protector? Specifically, I'm interested in how it fits. You can post it in the Martin Fields thread in the Accessories subforum.

Not that I don't believe you, but you tried it in a dimly lit room, right? With the PhantomSkinz, it worked fine when it was brightly lit, or outdoors... just not inside when I have the lights down.

Cool... thanks man. So far it's just the PhantomSkinz and Skinomi that has been confirmed throw off the proximity sensor.
I've got the Phantom Skinz screen protector and am noticing no problems with proximity on the Nexus One. I did set the skin to be flush with the bottom of the screen rather than the top (the skin does appear to be about 1.5mm short), could this be the reason I'm not experiencing the proximity issue, even in a low light room?

It definitely could be... I had mine flush with the top prior to removing it. Either way, I think these screen protectors should be cut to cover the entire screen. I messaged PhantomSkinz Guru to suggest that he/she inquire about fixing the size issue and maybe getting a small cutout to the proximity/ambient light sensor area. I imagine a nice elongated oval, like those on phones where the speaker is on the screen, would work well.
Is this with full body or just screen protector?

Samsung Galaxy S 3 Sensors!?

Hello,
So today i noticed on the left side of the speaker, that there are 3 sensors, both of them are together on the same place, which should be Light sensor and proximity sensor... but what about the other one more to the left? Seems pretty much like a Small LED to me.

I believe the proximity sensor and light sensor are both together, which leaves the left sensor... i wonder what it is
May be u r right, i am dying to find out!
I will test it with a Q-tip. I pointed a flashlight with high brigthness on the sensors now, the left one doesnt seem like a LED... so that option just kinda died
Ok tested it, qtip during the call shows that the proximity sensor is the one in the CENTER.
Used a black fabric for the light sensor... with my finger over the fabric covered the left and right sensors, result: RIGHT sensor is the light sensor!
Leaves: Left sensor.... what is it?
Center: Proximity
Right: Light
Left: ?

beats me i hadnt even noticed it!
I would probably guess that the two closest together are a Transmitter/ Receiver pair.
It could be emitting infra-red and using a receiver to detect how far away an object is based upon the light returned.
One way to sometimes 'see' this is to use a normal camera to look at it, if it shows a white spot, there is a good chance it's emitting IR.

Possibly broken Proximity Sensor? Screen always goes off when calling

Hey guys,
just yesterday I got my phone back from repair (I cracked my screen, nothing was working then).
Here is a photo of my old screen, which had a hole right below the upper loud speaker:
I think it might be that the drop broke the sensor, and not the repair itself?!?
Using an app like this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tigermonster.proxfinder shows that my sensor is constantly detecting something.
I'm not using any screen protectors or anything
For now I rooted my device and disabled the sensor by installing the xposed framework and then using http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.mrchandler.disableprox
Strangely enough, yesterday, like 3h after I got my phone back I called someone and everything, including the sensor was working perfectly!
Can anyone show me a picture of such a proximity sensor? Do you guys think a fix like in this video shown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPHsianYnqo, putting a piece of paper behind the proximity sensor could work?
You never ended up showing any images of the phone before/after the repair but if you have a screen protector fitted to the screen and it doesn't have a little cutout on the right just below the top speaker then the protector is constantly tripping the proximity sensor.

I don't think it has anything to do with that damage now tbh, because it was working well yesterday. I guess maybe the connector loosened itself?

Thanks for the info about the position of the sensor - I'll definitely do that when I'm going to disassemble my phone (which is gonna take a while since I'm waiting to receive a new rear housing from a seller in the US).
I'm planning to disassemble as little as possible, so I'm hoping it's easy to access the proximity sensor (but guessing by the pictures it should be).

Good luck. Hope you can fix it by cleaning it. Make sure to have some thermal compound on hand to replace the old stuff when you disassemble.
Hey one more quick question:
Do you think it's possible to remove the motherboard without removing the battery?
I guess that the problem is that the proximity sensor is either too close to the screen, or too far away (like there's some small gap between the proximity sensor and the screen). I will probably have to remove the motherboard if it's the former (if it's the latter I can just put something like a pice of paper at the back of the rubber).

You won't need to remove the battery to remove the main board. You'll just have to unplug it.

I don't know which type of proximity sensor this is, IR, led, electromagnetic etc. But all proximity sensors I know of have two "eyes" One eye emits ir, led, or electromagnetic field, the other eye looks for a change in the return field. I think you'll find a scratched, smashed return eye. Or debris lodged in the sensor housing. Use a magnifying glass and excellent lighting.
If you shine a bright flashlight at the sensor through the screen can you see anything blocking the eyes? Doesn't matter I guess, you'd have to disassemble to get it out of the way anyways.

It looks like the prox sensor comes covered in a rubber cover. In this pic the rubber is there:

I suspect the rubber could be missing, lost during repair. Or perhaps installed wrong.

I did what you asked: There is no light coming out on the back of the phone if that's what you meant.
Anyway, I'll have to wait until I receive my replacement back housing and then I'll try my best to repair the sensor. I hope the rubber is just misaligned.
Alright - so I did have time today to disassemble my phone (got the replacement housing last week).
I noticed that there was no rubber part on top of the light and proximity sensor, as well as on the device above the two (i don't know what that is).

Everything is working well again (there were some lints on the display right below where the proximity sensor is located, that's probably why it stopped working from one day to another).
I guess the main function of the rubber is to protect the sensor against dust and lints.
I also am very mad at myself for having forgotten to take out the NFC antenna from the old housing before replacing it, so I had to open my phone again after I did already close it (and now there are slight traces of an opening - again )
But apart from that everything's fine now and I hope it'll stay this way.

Glad you got it fixed! And yeah, unfortunately it's nearly impossible to remove the back cover without leaving dings at the injection site. When I put on my new top and bottom rear covers I removed most of the glue. So next time I can remove them without much trouble.
I am having similar problems. I just traded for a nexus 6P and everything works great except for the proximity sensor. The 6p was just OTAed to 7.0 and I only unlocked it and installed TWRP. No other changes and no root (yet).
There is no screen protector on the device.
When I make a call, the screen stays on. The screen turns off as soon as I cover the proximity sensor. The screen then does not come back on until the call is completed. I downloaded a bunch of proximity apps, including Proximity Sensor Finder. Proximity Sensor Finder (and others) report that sensor detects Far (5cm or more) and Near (value of 0 cm when the sensor is covered). The sensor doesn't seem to identify intermiate values. The odd thing is that the sensor doesn't seem to reset. If I cover the sensor (value of 0 cm) and remove my hand, the sensor continues to read 0 cm.
Does this sound like a hardware or software issue? The device appears to detect both the near and far states, but doesn't return to far after the sensor is uncovered. Thanks for any help.
Solved the problem. I downgraded to MM and the proximity sensor problem persisted, so I figured it was a hardware issue.
I took apart the 6P and the there were signs that repair had been performed. The screen was probably replaced previously. The little rubber gasket covering the proximity sensor was missing, just as the OP described. I cut a blue-colored straw and placed it over the proximity/light sensor. Works perfect!
I need to bump this thread cause a few days ago I started having the same problem that nickfuzz describes.
Now I've got my opened phone in front of me and tried putting a pice of a black straw around the two sensors, but that does not help. It reports 5.0 cm and if I cover the sensor it stays at 0.0 cm
Can anyone give me an advice about what to do now?
Update:
The light sensor is also not working properly: It is reporting way too less lightness, and tends to report 0 lux when I'm not directly holding the phone under a lamp (for instance).
After 5 hours of trying I somehow managed to at least get the sensor to always report 5.0 cm. That's better than constantly reporting 0.0 cm.
I put a piece of a wide straw (there are different sizes, you know) around the hole board on which the two sensors (light & proximity) sit on. I guess this is a bad idea.
I am now trying to get this rubber gasket from somewhere, but I guess I'll have bad luck since I'd have to buy a defective nexus 6p from which I could take it from
UPDATE:
Can anyone tell me why the screen is painted black on the inside, right where the proximity sensor is located? I scraped off the paint and painted it over with a black pen. That must be the reason why the proximity sensor is always reporting 5.0 cm (which doesn't make much sense, because at some point it would have to detect something if it's not broken).

Can you tell me if you put the straw around both sensors and their "chassis" (that black thing they sit on), or did you put the straw only around the sensors (i.e. on top of the chassis)?
I still need to find a way to fix my sensors
I tried to use some electric tape and put it on top of the sensors with two small circles cut in, but eventually I figured that the problem actually lies in the black paint on the inside of the screen.
I removed that paint a few weeks ago and I couldn't paint a new black paint on it that is not too thick, so I am stuck with a sensor consequently reporting 5cm.
I did try to use an Edding.
I had the same issue with the proximity sensory and a new 6P, but fixed it with this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobiledirection.proximitysensorreset&hl=en
Everything was still good after uninstalling that app too.
