Galaxy S or...... ?? - Galaxy S I9000 General

guys,
my HD2 Died the other day. lucky for me i had an insurance on the phone so now ik can chose any other one (within budget) and the galaxy s got my mind along with the desire, nexus one and iphone 4.
so can anyone convince me why i should buy the galaxy s and not the rest of them, or even a new HD2 ???
also, how is the s amoled ? is it that much better then normal lcd/amoled ??

It really depends in what YOU like most. The best features of the Galaxy S is the Super AMOLED screen that REALLY stands out, it is much better readeble than the others in the sun and is less power hungry! Also it has the best processor of them all (don't know about the processor of Iphone4 though). It won all benchmarks with a good margin against snapdragon. The Desire is good if you want a Nexus one with Sense UI. Nexus One is the best if you want the newest updates from android as fast as possible. And Iphone4, well... Get it if you want an Iphone, but I like android better .

well i dont like apple that much, just the specs of the iphone 4 are great.. thats the only thing.. i dont care about interfaces or updates that much, i want a fast and stable telefoon, if i dont like the interface il put a new rom on it or something..

The SGS is currently the fastest there is, and the strongest.
1GHZ Hummingbird, it's pretty much the same processor in the iPhone 4, but SGX540 GPU vs the iPhone's 535... it's really no contest, the 540 is a hell of a lot stronger.
If it's specs you care about, one SGS to rule them all.

how about the ram ? read something about the ram being an internal SD card and it was pretty slow, or is that on extreem events ?

I have just made the jump from the Hd2 to the Galaxy s. I think that the Galaxy s really is a better product. The screen, on board memory, android ect, and it just works, I really would recommend this phone. I was abit unsure about android having never used it before and always being a windows mobile stalwart, but I really, really like it. its certainly the best phone I have ever owned, you wont be dissapointed. even the price is good

i get 600 euro's back from insurance, and the shop wich i have to spend it at asks 600 euro's for the galaxy s 16 gb so thats perfect. well..
thanks for the info all, think the Galaxy is the phone its gonna be

Good choice mate! Mine is on its way too.

The thing some people don't mention is, while the screen on the Galaxy S is stunning, things like text, especially the regular black/white variety looks grainy compared to regular LCD's like on the HD2. It can be quite jarring until you get used to it.

Is it really that much of an issue???

I keep reading about this as of late. If this is such a big issue, why aren't there any tech blog reviews stating this? I believe you and the others, but why is it not mentioned more often. One would assume that the SGS vs iPhone 4 debate would have mentioned this a million times, in a strike against the SGS. This is one reason I'm considering not waiting for the Verizon SGS (best looking version of them all) and either sticking with my Evo or jumping to the iPhone although I'm having a hard time with the thought of leaving Android after I just got here and loving it.

well, the HD2 screen really came short when watching a movie, i got the X1 with Hangcock on SD-Card and when i played it on the HD2 it wasnt as good on the X1. but if its only small things like text on the galaxy s i think ill get over that

I still have an HD2 and when I play the Transformers movies that came with it, it looks perfect as in HD like perfect. Then I tested a film that I had ripped myself and it didn't look as good.

HTC Evo 4G vs Samsung Galaxy S (Galaxy has better CPU?)

I never thought I'd say this, but I was under the impression that Samsung's new lineup would be using their own OS (Bada) rather than Android...I've now heard different and done some snooping.
I've hated Samsung phones, but OMG...
http://alienbabeltech.com/main/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Cellphonehardwarecompari1.png
Just take a look at that!!!
I've got another two weeks that I can return my Evo...should I keep it or wait for Galaxy S?
I mean just look at that - less power consumption, AMOLED screen, much faster GPU, faster RAM
I just got this Evo and I feel like something better is already coming out...
Dude I'm in the same boat as you I just got it and I heard about the galaxy s but after doing more research it seems like my evo is already outdated in some aspects by the galaxy s. I heard rumors its gonna be on t-mobile too and I canceled my contract with them to get the evo. But as I said its better only in a few ways. I wanna see reviews for it but by the time the galaxy s is out I won't be able to return the evo. I'm in a dilemma especially after the problems with the evo like battery life subpar 8 megapixel camera and 720p video and the 30 fps cap (that one gets me pissed) .- I wonder what other ppl at xda have to say- imma be watching this thread.
im returning my evo for the samsung galaxy s pro (with qwerty keyboard) for sprint.
I'm also very interested in the Galaxy. I love the Evo but the screen problem has got me thinking twice and I'm not too happy with how thick the Evo feels to me compared to my HD2. I understand that the Galaxy has a CPU with the same clock speed but tests have shown it to perform better along with the GPU as mentioned. The much slimmer profile sounds very good to me and the lack of a camera flash is a letdown but one I could live with.
Samsung is known for not supporting their phones after release but they have confirmed that the Galaxy will be updated with Froyo. On 2G the battery is rated for talk time longer than the iPhone 4G and is of course replaceable. Also 16GB built-in + add a 32GB micro sd card and you have more storage than nearly any smartphone.
Here is the best review (9 pages) I've found on the Galaxy:

true the galaxy s has some great specs..
but you might want to do a little research on the Samsung support on thier phones. from what I have seen... it is a very big issue. they tend to push out great spec phones and then move on to the next phone to develop; and forget the old.
some times it is not just the specs. how the parts add and give you over all total performance. From reading on other phones.. (ex: hero vs moment).
But it's a Samsung...

That's better than htc who puts out phones with glaring problems and then stops supporting them. I haven't had an htc Pune since the tilt. I was hoping they had changed so I could get an evo, but apparently they haven't. I'm liking the galaxy s pro right now.

LOL....
True, but HTC's record is just as pathetic.
We'll see when we will have a bug fix release and maybe in 10 months Froyo...
The Galaxy is nice, but if you like the developing and deep hacking and customizing.
HTC is the way to go.
yeah you guys are right - i know samsungs phones tend to sound good on paper and turn out not that great after all. happened a couple of times before. wanted to love their phones, but just couldnt.
besides the galaxy s looks pretty ugly compared to the evo
ok is it me or does this thing REALLY look like an iphone clone? Don't get me wrong the specs are good, but that Touchwiz overlay is a huge negative for me. In addition the only advantages I see the Galaxy S as having is the internal storage (which doesn't matter to me because I haven't even filled up my 16gb card half way yet, so an extra 8/16gb of storage doesn't excite me), the screen resolution (I'd rather have less resolution and a larger screen though), and the processor (same clock speed but faster gpu, seeing as I don't do an extensive amount of gaming on my phone I couldn't careless about that. Not to mention the gaming I do with games such as Gangstar and Nova, which are 3d environments, run perfectly fine). The disadvantages for me would be: lack of 4g (I get great 4g coverage here in Atlanta and also get good speeds on it 4-8megs), lack of camera flash, does not come with flash (you will have to wait until froyo, or install a custom rom to do any browsing that involves flash), and below average speakerphone. The phone looks like a decent phone but it does not have enough advantages for me to make a switch. Just my opinion.
I'll pass on the samsung. I'm really not digging their skinning either. With their post support issues I think I'd rather deal with apple and the iphone or motorola and their new high end droid. That said I'm not going to go and get raped by verizon, I don't want to get raped by at&t either and I'm happy with my evo.

I agree about the looks! It looks way too much like an iPhone and the UI screenshots don't make it look any better. But have you seen the long demo video on YouTube? I forget which one it was, but I have to admit I was pretty impressed by the way it all flowed and this is coming from a guy who loves HTC Sense.
For someone like me, the extra 16GB would mean that I could ditch my iPod 160GB Classic and just have one device (I like to keep all my music and audiobooks on one device). Also reported by a few different blogs, the Galaxy screen is better and the hummingbird is reported too as being faster than the snapdragon in our Evos. And I guess I'm alone in this, but the super slim profile is a huge plus to me. But that back cover is pretty ugly. I'd really just like to demo this thing myself, with my Evo in hand and then decide. I'd also like to do the same with the iPhone 4G. These devices coming out on different dates, sure does making the choice making that much harder.........

I keep reading different carriers. Samsung has said they want the device to be on every carrier in every country and so if that holds true then it will be on all but my question is who will have it first late this month or next month as reported. I have seen some screenshots, showing T-Mobile account data on a Galaxy screen, but now I'm hearing Verizon and ATT as well.......

HTC has been spiting out awesome devices for a long time. ive been hooked since my Axim X50v. that was back in 03

I'm with you all the way on it, i like how motorola designed the droid X but not their software, and I wouldn't get a motorola anyways.

I feel stupid....did I make a mistake buying the N1?

I bought the N1 and its on it way, I was really happy and that was my final choice, until today I was checking out the Euro Version of the Galaxy S and it has 1900 mhz 3g which is used in my Area! I could have bought that and had a bigger/better screen, Better Processor, Better Camera, and Design (subjective).
I do like the N1 dont get me wrong but that Super Amoled Screen is mouth watering lol

Unless you bought it on eBay etc, you could just return it.
Also, Galaxy S = no camera flash (absurd), Android 2.1 (2.2 in 4+ months), and a crappy skin on it.
Yea I bought on eBay, Im sure its not a Big Deal, the N1 is a fantastic phone, I love it, but I just think the Galaxy S looks really nice! Haven't used one though.

I have used both, and while the Galaxy is a very nice phone, I can honestly say theres no way I would trade my Nexus One for a Galaxy S.
i wouldnt worry as much as you are. the nexus has a lot of advantages that the galaxy S does not. google updates, colored trackball, unlock bootloader, camera flash, superb build quality and materials and feel in comparison to the lightweight plasticky galaxy s, etc.
Thanks guys! Im sure the GS Is very nice but the N1 does indeed own!
ive actually been considering a galaxy s also and luckily my friend picked up one with his new contract a few days ago. after playing it with, i can tell you both are nice phones and you cant go wrong either way.
ive had my n1 for several months now so i have experienced many of the bugs the n1 has such as in rare cases, the n1 will send a text message to the wrong person (thought i did something wrong the one time it happened to but apparently its a bug; i text a lot too). i agree with the other poster in the feel of the n1 is better than all the other phones i have held and is only beaten by the new iphone.
my friend has the samsung vibrant, and for some reason, it doesnt have flash so if taking night pictures is a big deal for you, the n1 wins. however, i felt the the vibrant took better day pictures. the vibrant also has a night mode that is better than the other phones i have had, but is no replacement for flash. the same applies to video recording, vibrant wins during the day in both video and sound recording, and n1 wins in recording in dark places.
if gaming is a big deal for you, the galaxy s is the winner. i was playing psx4droid on the vibrant and although i didnt notice any speed improvements over the n1, i can tell you the vibrant supports at least a 3 finger multitouch, over the n1's 2.
one of the biggest flaws i felt the n1 had is the speaker. i am constantly missing calls and the quality is pretty bad, but somehow samsung managed to put in a worse speaker, or at least i thought so
Yeah, I don't think the Galaxy S is superior, more like on the same class.
Galaxy S has a better screen (larger, brighter) and more internal storage but no led notification, most likely no updates past 2.2, no camera flash. CPU is about equivalent. N1 seems better built. I just got my N1 two weeks ago and was also considering the Galaxy S but stock Android was what sold me on the N1.
It doesn't matter if the Galaxy S is better or not, a better phone will come along and surpass both phones. If you're not happy with the Nexus One now, you're not gonna be happy when every new big phone comes out.

Yup, but in six months when N1 is rocking android 3.0 and GS still has 2.1/2.2 you'd be much happier with a N1.

The N1 might be out shined in a few of those areas, but like others have mentioned, it will be the first to get Gingerbread. The Galaxy S probably never will. Samsung is going to expect you to purchase a new phone for 3.0 instead.

Ya but shortly after that, something else will come out running 3.0 that's better than the N1, its a continual cycle. I'm just happy that the N1 is an awesome phone in itself, another phone may be better but it shouldn't take anything away from what I can do with mine.

You are right, and I agree. My point is, in six months he might not be ready to get a new phone yet (like I know will be my case), and in that case it is better to have a N1 over the GS. That was my reasoning choosing the N1. Of course, there might be unofficial 3.0 roms available for both phones, so maybe it will be a non issue at all for the OP.
I agree. N1 has its own unique speciality. Galaxy S is better in may way (because it came out later) but Nexus One can be modified easily and there are a lot of developers for it so that u can customize it to ur liking
Everything on the nexus is awesome .. it's just the touch screen.. multitouch doesn't work well on games and emulators.. but other than that it's an awesome receiving all the love

I actually got my Nexus one recently and I'm fortunate that living in England pretty much all android devices are available.
I went there knowing the Galaxy S for instance can easily outperform the Nexus in most areas, especially in graphical terms.
I had a play with the Galaxy and two things struck me between that and the Nexus, I felt the Galaxy is too big and not easily pocketable and the 2nd was it just didn't feel like a precision bit of kit like the Nexus.
The Nexus just feels like it's in the top class when it comes to design and the Galaxy less so.
For me it's a no brainer, proper camera, beautiful device and it doesn't get all of the custom stuff over the top.
traitor
I am contemplating selling my nexus one and getting a galaxy s. I would be sad to lose the trackball wake and led flashlight that my fine rooted nexus brings, but I am tired of struggling to use my phone in the sunlight, and would be happy to have a more responsive screen and better GPU.
I had the Galaxy and it doesn't even compare to the quality of the Nexus one. The Nexus One is the best built device still today. The quality build is 2nd to none and the looks are just killer. I think the 3.7 inch screen is the best size for a phone. Go Nexus One. The only thing better may be the Nexus Two.

A friend has the tmo version. It is very nice. Smooth video recording with audio that is significantly better. No flash? As if the n1 camera and flash is anything to crow about. Lol. Photos don't have purple blobs in the middle on the vibrant.
But it was the video he got out of it that impressed me the most.
The n1 does feel better built.

cant make up my mind! galaxy s or iphone 4

Hi Guys
I recently lost my x10 and need a new phone.
This is properbly not the most objective forum to ask what to get
But maybe some of you have tried both over a period of time and can give your opinion?
I have never had an iphone, so I dont know how they are.
What I like with the iphone 4 is:
- The design is great!
- Hardware is equally good as the GS.
- Camera just as good if not better?
What I dont like is:
- Very closed OS
- Only 3,5 " screen
I do not mind the lack of microsd slot, as 32 GB is enouch.
The Galaxy s have a great 4" screen!! and a great OS.
I do not like the design though. looks cheap.
I there was replacement backcovers in metal or rubbery it would be a great step up.
I do not mind the lack of flash, since the night mode is good.
I would be glad to hear your thoughts
seems like you are leaning more to the iphone4 than not
might as well go for iphone4
if you can't find anything that you like on SGS more than iphone4, then there is no much point considering SGS
personally i like Android + SGS
- open to all developers, create what you want, and post it on Android Market
- 4' screen
- faster browsing than iphone4
- better screen colour and quality than retina of iphone4
- SD card slot
- more accessories to choose from
- i can use any software i like
- lots of firmwares to play with
- GPS works better than WM phones and stand along GPS like Garmin 205 or alikes
- great on 3G/HSDPA
- easy to drag and drop my music & videos to the phone
- great bluetooth A2DP Stereo
- i can swap the G7 battery any time, replaceable battery are very affordable on ebay,
- ultra slim smartphone
- FM radio to check on News,
- great 3D GPU for games and other stuff
- tactile and animated live wall papers
- much mucho software, so much that you don't know which apps to pick, and much more coming.
- Android Market is great, once you buy an App, or download an App, it stays in your gmail account, so if you ever switch phone, format, reflash, you just need to click on them again and they are all back!!!!
- system settings can be backed up to your gmail account !!!
- so in the same scenario, you can restore everything to the way it was before any major wipe or hardware replacement
- most apps are compatible with other Android phones, so if you ever get tired of SGS you can always go to HTC, or Acer, or whatever is on the horizon, and still keep all your apps with you.
- Wifi N, really fast, but iphone4 got it too... right?
- SGS can survive more drops than iphone4 can out of the box without protection (see sig for link), however iphone 4 screen cracks easily.
...well that's all i can think of at the moment of reasons why i prefer SGS over iphone4

oh yes! that was the most important thing, and i forgot about it

Google maps navigation?
Thanks guys!
I have not decided yet.
But the itunes thing I can run through Wine. I am a linux user.
I am dissapointed that the X10 did not have any sofware for linux. I had to use windows to upgrade! What is that about?? android is based on linux and I have to use windows!!
How is it with upgrades on galaxy s? Is it over the air or do I need windows??
it depends on the carrier for over the air
it is predominant in windows
but there is a Heimdall cross platform (win, linux, mac) app that is being develop to update via any OS
Played with an iPhone 4, did not like. First off, it felt like a brick. Secondly, it is plastic with the only alluminium part being along the side so no difference there. The retina display is overated and is quite small when you compare the Galaxy S to it.
Saying that the Galaxy S looks cheap, I've had many who say it looks rich. Only when it's covered in smudges does it look cheap, but what phone doesn't? Many compliment the screen quality, size and weight. Viewing web pages on it is amazing, the font is so easy to read without even zooming in. In the looks department, many compare it to the iPhone. It doesn't look like an iPhone when you put the two together. Build quality is solid and it is a very light phone thanks to the plastic. It only feels cheap when you take the back plate off.
The hardware is awesome. I've had no real issues with GPS so I think that is a problem for the American models. The standard Galaxy S works great out of the box assuming you disable TouchWiz and install a decent home screen. Customisability is also a great feature with the Android OS.
I'm looking forward for the Froyo update. What I'm hoping for is some improvement to the battery life. That's the only thing I dislike but that's probably linked to some application I've installed.
Either way, I'm sorry for your loss and I hope you purchase a phone that you'll hopefully enjoy.
Feel/Build Quality:
The iphone will need a case because of the antenna problem which completely negates allot of the money spent on the build quality
The galaxy s you will want a case to protect it and give it a premium feel
Result: Tie
Media:
For viewing media both phones have comparable screens, personally i BARELY see pixels on my ~166 dpi pc screen, and can see none atall on the 800x480 screen on the galaxy s even when holding the phone up close so the whole resolution hype for the iphone 4 is a load of rubbish.
Both screens are (i believe) 24 bit so the colour capabilities are the same
Galaxy S has better contrast, faster response, better viewing angles
Iphone 4 has sharper text if straining your eyes to read fully zoomed out text on a small screen is your thing
To be honest they are both comparable experiences, allthough the galaxy has a bigger screen which is a minor win, and the iphone 4 has a HORRIBLE aspect ratio, not sure what apple were thinking there...
Result: Tie
Hardware:
Galaxy S 1ghz hummingbird SGX540 gpu
Iphone 4 ~700mhz A4 (hummingbird) SGX535 gpu (30% the performance of the 540)
Result: Galaxy S
Software:
While the android os is getting much better the iphone still wins here, the galaxy s has lots of software bugs which although are easy to fix, are annoying to have to deal with in the first place.
Result: Iphone 4
Overall:
Really its down to whether you can justify the price tag on the iphone, as with all apple products you are paying about 45% more just for the logo
I got my Galaxy S for £340 in the UK, the iphone is £500
If money was not an issue then sure, the iphone wins due to the better software

Thanks mate
I used ADW home screen on my x10 and it was great!!
The thing I most dislike about the iphone is the screen size! going from 4" x10 screen to 3,5" may be difficult!
in my case i went from a 5" to a 4"
that's why going to a 3.5" was realy too much to lose
We all know why we like the Samsung Galaxy S, but why don't I personally like the iPhone 4?
1. If I purchased it depending on my usage, I would have paid almost twice for it that the SGS. I know, WTFMAN.
2. iTunes. Some people love it, then again, some people like being (insert expletive here).
3. Smaller screen. Played with my colleague's iPhone 4 and the first thing I noticed was "damn does that status bar look tiny" and it went on from there. Retina is way too overhyped. The colors, the blacks, and everything else (except the battery life) for Super AMOLED is great... ON a 4" screen.
4. App Store is biased against PR0N. Sorry, but some very good apps have been removed because some stupid Apple fanboy decided to use it for the wrong reason.
Bottom line for me is that there were just too many more negatives on the iPhone than there are on Android.
Thanks all!
I think I am going for the SGS Mony is not an issue though.
One thing. Is the metal ring real metal or just crome plastic?

Not a big price difference in Norway
personally i love my sgs but this is an sgs forum if we didnt we have a different phone by now
the iphone is more basic if ur less tech savvy smaller screen (better screen(i think apple tryed to get amoled but couldn't so went with 2nd best )apple is very picky about what u can and cant do
android phones in general you can do A lot more customization i personally like the lay out more has potential to be anything you want through custom roms
sgs amazing screen probally keeping alot of people from leaving after this recovery mode bs (i know it kept me) very fast very good for games
buggy/laggy at times but every thing eles makes up for it when frayo comes out wow the sgs is gonna be amazing
PS. Check every thing out before you leave i just got a new sgs today with recovery mode and now ive noticed its got a dead pixel 4th sgs here i come Q/A is terrible right now
its just chrome plastic

LoL. Great! If thing that comes up in your mind when it comes to buying a phone is iPhone. LOL.
Mate, get an Android, especially SGS.

Christmas miracle :')

Two days ago operator made me an offer of any smartphone for free, I narrowed it down to the most expensive hehe: Iphone 4, Desire HD or a sgs and don't know which to buy. This is a once time deal I can't wait for dual cores and whatever else comes out next year I need to reach a decision this week.
What should I buy? I have seen and used all OSs . The only thing I like about the ios is the app store, I generally dislike Apple and Idrones.
I'm relatively tech savvy (in the non-douchy kinda way xD
Except some minor annoyances here and there I love android. Can any one give some advice? Thx and ho ho ho
iPhones kinda nice but not as much for the geek in you.
HD Desire ??
SGS awesome phone. Too bad they're blowing up left right and center.
Android app store is choke full of goodies and I've found cool stuff my bro can't get on his iphone4
Imo the SGS, the screen is just beautiful and the processor is a monster compared to the Desire HD and iPhone 4 is just not my cup of tea.
SGS will most likely be more optimised after Nexus S is release, I realy think it's already fast and powerfull, and it will only get better!
Camera is amazing and Night mode is franckly pretty amazing, you'd get more than what you can see!
HD Videos is pretty good also!
Sync is all with your GMail account, so pretty simple and straight forward. You can sync your outlook with GMail if needed.
And if you need to access the files on the device, the USB can be mounted so it's pretty fast to transfer things.
Only down I can see on the SGS is the "sometime" flawing GPS, not all the time but can be anoying sometimes :|

Say whaat?
I think you should go for the Desire HD. It's got 768 MB of RAM vs. the 340 MB available (out of a claimed 512 MB) on the SGS. And it's got a bigger screen, almost an equally powerful processor, very snappy, and it's already got 2.3 Gingerbread.
If you need a powerhouse for games, SGS is the way to go though. Nothing matches it's GPU at the moment.

hmmm isnt that becouse of the ****ty samsung filesystem and/or bad kernel
and should i be concerned about only 339 ram?
Buy the iPhone 4, sell it for $600-$800 off contract, buy whatever phone you want. Personally I'd says Desire HD simply because Sense is much better than Touchwiz and it has the Sense.com features (free remote wipe, GPS tracking, text through phone through website, etc). However, the battery is kind of weak so I'd recommend a bigger one if you can find one.

They ported it from Nexus One to Evo, and Desire HD is basically a variant of Evo
Damm I'm more confused now than when I started...
Iphone: don't really like how it feels in my hand, really small screen, absolutely no customization whatsoever.
good things: apps, no major bugs and better shades of blue lol.
Desire HD: seems to have the worst hardware out of the three (cpu and gpu) piece if crap battery, seems if it falls once is over, ****ty battery and sim cover and imo the camera that sticks out like the evo is really effing ugly
Good things: most ram out of the three, htcsense.com, biggest screen (preferences but I think 4" is perfect)
SGS: plagued by software bugs apparently, random data corruption, no flash, needs most tweaking out of the box
Good things: best screen cpu & gpu, the nexus s is almost the same phone which means better development porting the works(here's hoping) and best battery life
By comparison seems that the sgs wins overall categories
Its easy. If you want the best smartphone the its sgs.
Iphone is not as good many say.
I did have one and i did sell it.
Iphone has more good games. That's the only good with it.
The rest is much better with sgs.
HD phone is not better either.
It has more serious flaw then both sgs and iphone together.
Sgs is a powerhouse and it got the best screen of all phones.
Sure sgs can be laggy out of the box, but that is easy to fix.
So right now there is not a phone that's has anything to compete with.
The sgs will win it all the time.
**Using my own JPU kernel, z4mod, 339MB Ram and ext2 filesystem**
My father has an iphone3g and my uncle has the iphone 4 I jailbreaked it for him honestly I wasn't that impressed with the phone. The only thing I like about it is the apps mainly the games are much more refined than on android phones
Also why has the sgs only have 340ram ? On every page I looked it says 512. Will that bite us on the ass later I mean the dhd almost has 800 and phones are moving on 1gb .are you telling me the sgs has as much ram as my old ass hero?

It does use a 512MB chip, but only ~340MB of it is visible after you're booted up. Out of the other ~172MB, there's around 40MB that's unaccounted for (we don't know where its being used) and the rest of it is "reserved" (even when the functions it's reserved for are not in use) for stuff like video playback, 3G calling etc.

I'd have to say i agree with Product F(RED)
Desire HD is the best phone on the list IMHO. But getting the ipoop and selling on will mean you can get the HD desire and still have some cash in your pocket
sgs is the best (imho!) it's a pain out of the box but that's why we love it so much, let's face it, most of us like tweaking and playing with our phones, it's half the fun. Flashing new roms, installing different lagfixes, uninstalling new roms, uninstalling new lagfixes, whoops I've broken it, nope, it's going again. The sgs is a geeks wet dream and in my experience it is very difficult to fully brick.
So if you want a phone that you are going to have to fiddle with, get the sgs. Jpu seems to have ironed out a lot of problems, I get perfect gps now, although it was pretty good before. I'm actually a little disapointed that jpu works so well, it kinda takes the fun out of it all
If this doesn't appeal to you then get the hd, it's a good phone, screen is not as good and it doesn't feel as fast as my tweaked sgs, but overall it's definitely a winner and you won't be disapointed
The iphone is also a good phone and not to be sniffed at, if you don't mind being spoon fed by apple.
i have to say SGS, because of the most powerful hardware, software is not important, because we can fix that easy , as surprise Samsung also tries there best, i think with JPU Firmware they show that they are willing todo everything, Hardware we can't fix, SGS has currently the fastest CPU + GPU specially the GPU!!!!! is amazing, why do you think Google went with Nexus S , because of Hardware, Speed, Quality, Availability.......
Nexus S and Android 2.3 Gingerbread was made to give game developers the best available Hardware and with Gingerbread many things which will make Game development easier and because of the CPU + GPU, which is almost the same as Iphone 4 has (SGS a little bit better), it will also make porting games from iphone to android pretty easy now.
About HTC Sense i agree it is a nice homescreen, but on the other hand it is a memory, cpu and battery monster! why do you think they have 768MB Memory and if we look at different homescreen replacements (ADW, Laucher Pro, Zeam,.......), then i really don't see the big advantage at all, but thats a taste decission
So for me i have to say i am very happy that i went with the SGS, i really can't understand users who say that the SGS is built cheap, i have the SGS now since the beginning, i don't use a screenprotector, the plastic is thin but it still looks like new also after falling on the floor (shame on me), compared to my previous HTC Units which where loosing color on there great metal casing and not by falling on the floor but because i used a leather case, the signal was often a issue for me (metal), dust was behind the screen after a short time,........
I have to say that the Samsung Hardware is such an improvement compared to HTC that i won't anytime soon look back to any HTC unit even if it would have a killler hardware.
But that are just my 2 cents on it
Go for the iPhone 4 unless you really need flash. It has the best screen of the three(the pentile matrix of the SGS is just horrible) and works correctly out of the box.

Care to elaborate on this? The iphone does have a gorgeous screen, but to call the sgs screen horrible is a bit like saying that Angelina Jolie is a dog. Sure there are better looking girls out there than her, but would you kick her out of bed? Most definitely not, unless you bat for the other team of coursee, in such a case swap angelina for brad or whom ever floats your boat.

I have just abandon One X and back to HD2!!

IMO, Disappointing "upgrade" to one X.. HD2 Still the king! So, I sold it off and is back to my trusty Good Quality Phone.
If there is anyone that is interested to know why, let me know. will be glad to post the experience here.
why oh why oh why
i was just dreaming of the 1X
We had an X1 on demo, our outcome was buying 20 new Andida cells for current HD2 fleet & aiming at another 12 month+ service life as nothing to offer but a IT hassle changing over to something with no heavy benefits & a big price tag. HTC handsets really need to implement better inovation & some clever reworking of Android ...
You are crazy man.... really.... HD2 is great but one X is the greatest ever....
Personally, I am not big fan of sense unless in the older times of wm6.5. I just favour HTC for their build quality and dev support for custom roms unlike some plasticky builds like ahem*..S*M***G
Honestly I must be blind not to read properly that OneX is polycarbonate.. As far as I remember, their higher end model have excellent built. Sadly, not this one though..
To go deeper..
I am only mentioning stuffs that I would be considered as an "upgrade" over the HD2 . All comments are imo. U may say I am bias but these are my true feelings and experience. My HD2 are usually switching between GB Nand roms in general.
Built quality- Polycarbonate=Plastic most of the reviews and even those in store are the white version which looked better.. but i am true to HTC, which usually produce industrial designs so, white will never be for me.. all my phone are black or dark colour.. I am truly shocked at the quality of the material used.
Screenwise- Honestly, I imagine the screen will be a huge reason for upgrade. 720p, SLCD2, gorilla glass, 4.7in screen etc. BUT, its really does not feel much bigger as the screen ratio makes it taller. I mostly use the phone in landscape so compared to hd2, it really only a few mm wider. abt 3mm at most. I have a HTC Titan as well, absolutely love the screen size and ratio. The only time I love the One X screen is when I am watching a movie on it.. any ****ty grainy video quality looks gorgeous on it!
Processor- Yeah.. so it have a 4+1 core processor, 1GB ram.. HD2 1ghz single core, 512mb ram. Day to day usage, its does feel faster BUT, Just by a few millisecs.. I can live with that.. Free ram for ONE X is pathetic.. 300+mb left after running sense. HD2, 200+ to close to 300mb without sense. (I mentioned b4, I hate sense on android). theres no way a phone can replace a computer for work. Its mostly for adhoc. So, its there really need for such a processor on a phone??
Battery life- Theres no need to comment further.. sucks. People will say that this is normal for a superphone. But imo, if HD2 can do similar function though millisec slower, HD2 is the superphone.
Camera- The biggest letdown imo. Stupid Autofocusing works half the time so what if it have zero lag...
Wifi/3G connection- For some reason, after the phone screen off, the data on both Wifi and 3g sleeps as well. Coz very often, when I wake the phone there will be a error message smthing like this " no network, pls check connection". This means I will be missing emails, whatsapp messages etc that works via data.
Minor irritating things- Super cheap quality headset for Flagship model is a joke.. at least include a in-ear type..pls.. Most of the time, I cant find the volume rocker.. It too darn small.
There are many more that I cant remember...
If I have so many complains, why did I buy this? Because my contract is up and I trust HTC blindly. And the dimmly lit shop doesnt help much either.
I am just glad this overhyped phone is no longer with me.
I am not a troll.. I am just pissed..

according to you weird logic, old CRT TVs are better then HDTVs
guys go the One X forum and check the tons of user reviews, so many of us are in awe with the One X, there are only the issues of build defects in early batches, everything else its an uber, brisk, super sexy device
HTC at its best
and the camera, well i don't need to argue check the pictures thread and you wills see for yourselves http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1585398 easy as hell to take gorgeous photos

Well.. That thread is all abt the best shots that users have taken with the one x camera. Naturally, all the shots will look good.. Mine does not have any hardware related issue and in direct comparison to the HD2, OneX is without doubt better. My point is that, is the One X that great a upgrade from the hd2 ? IMHO, call me strange or fussy, my answer is still no. Neither is it worth all the hype. Its just another phone with better or even great specs but in real life, the performance is subpar.. Entirely imo. Maybe I have too high expectations for it.
Mate,
One X is a great phone! You must've been smoking something special. Comparing the awfull camera of HD2 (mine is already 2 years old) with OX is absolutely ridiculous....

all the crazy bugs/glitches have been sorted by firmware 1.29, took them less than a month to clear them out
we still have only one issue which is backlight flickering when the phone overheats, seems related to Tegra 3's power saving feature called PRISM, which controls back-light dynamically to save power, HTC said its software and promised an update soon
so please spare me, the fastest and most generous Android updates provider is HTC, most of their end of 2010 devices are receiving the ICS upgrade too
I would have to admit the Note was better liked than he One X when had them on Demo ...
Samsungs efforts on Android seemed better than HTC for most practical phone use.
Sound quality on HTC still is very poor & the build quility & design of the current polycarbonate plastic handsets is not that good, no wonder 2012 sales are down ...
Yeah. With a history of sexy metal outfits on higher end device, I am deeply disappointed. I dun care if its polycarbonate. If its plastic, it just feels plastic.

You only need the speed for games. For the rest, when using an OS/UI a few millisecs make a lot of difference. But if you don't care for that, the HD2 will do just fine. I wonder why you are even considering an upgrade.

I wonder this too, just keep your HD2, 2012 technology just isn't for you.
I agree on Sense thing.
I just don't get why all those manufactuers are trying to make the user 'happier'.
Android is really customizable (unlike iOS ) so one can set his/her system according to personal preferences.
Pr0 users are going to root and install something like CM/AOKP anyway...
So... Why the hell manufactuers can't just release phones with stock unlocked bootloaders + plain, AOSP compiled Android, and whole vendor/build/kernel related stuff?!
I came from an HD2 too.
I take some of these points - but the One X is a evolution of the HD2, not a revolutionary device.
If I had paid NZ$900 for the phone to upgrade from the HD2 I wouldn't be that happy - I agree it probably isn''t worth it. But I took a 'free' upgrade.
But the bottom line is, it is the best Android phone you can buy.
Once the AOSP roms come, i think you will really see the One X pull ahead.
Still awaiting update to OP's blog. What exactly were you expecting from the phone? Holographic video calling? Concierge Service? a BJ whenever you felt randy lol?
I just had to post a reply to this post...
My personal choice was between three hadsets:
HTC One X
Galaxy S3
LG 4X HD
All have basically the same spec with minor variances.
I Pre-Ordered and recieved the One X upon release to great delight...
However, there were a couple of things i didn't like which were:
the 1800mAh battery
the lack of an SD slot
the unibody shell
More power is needed to run a quad-core handset & 4.3" screen comfortably for a day. Although it had 32gb, i currently have a 16gb in my HD2 and it's loaded. I like to be able to change my battery if i needed rather than having to send it of for a repair or smple change...as well as getting easier access to it.
Outside of these gripes, it is a great phone but it didn't hit me as oustanding as the HD2 when it was released.
My Galaxy S3 is also on Pre-order, but that wll come with a 2100mAh battery...which s also accessable. It has an SD slot whch can accomodate 32gb on top of the 16-32or 64gb on the phone.
These alone sell this phone to me and not the Samsung name or the screen which is on par with the One X apart from size...i was hoping HTC had something just a bit better than the One X.
Lastly there's the LG 4X HD not due till approx June...so a long wait.
I can't say owt apart from released specs, and they look good...it's a pity the phone is an ugly bugger.
To conclude, i wouldn't knock the One X comparing it to the HD2 they're a world apart. Although a great phone, the HD2 is outclassed in every way by the new crop of handsets...maybe not with build tho'.
However, in saying that...it's only now that i'm prepared to replace it. this says heaps about the longevity of the HD2. Long may it continue to show how it's done.
you have to be very carful when comparing different OSs across different hardware, several generations apart.
on paper the one x is better in everyway, I don't have one so cant comment on build quality, but I can say the HD2 has issues with the buttons and the digitiser.
however the real question is do you need it?
as you pointed out the 3 YEAR old HD2 runs absolutely fine, running WP in my opinion is as fast as you can get, the limiting factor in the UI is me, I cant move any quicker so having a better CPU or GPU wont make any difference.
So, does a quad core SoC make any difference? nope, not one iota when comparing it to an HD2 with WP and running day to day "phone" tasks
Will it (one x) run games better, of course it will, we have a S1 snapdragon in the HD2, with a very old A200 GPU, but that's irrelevant if you don't play games.
So I guess the question is, is the one x a worthwhile upgrade... for me no its not, will it be worth it for some people, yeah, if games are your thing.
Ive been debating about upgrading my HD2 to a real WP device and I simply cant justify it, and I think that's the point the OP is making, despite 3 years of "progress" there really hasn't been anything worthwhile if games aren't your thing.
Of Course we are talking about Android here, and if you compare android on the two devices then you have a different situation, I don't want to get in to an which OS is better debate but I think we can all agree that Android needs more horsepower to get it running well, if that's progress for an phone OS in your mind then so be it, but, that is that fact of the matter
Ah.. That's the word. " justify". It simply not justifiable to blow $800 to get a new hardware that does things a little faster or better. Theres no wow factor to this phone at all other than the specs. Maybe its not optimised yet, but the first impression is disappointing enough. I have to admit i am quite a htc fanboy but this device does not cut as a flagship. Camera is in a way better but the interface really screw up. Its simply a great challenge to get it to focus on something especially in macro. If u still have to get it done manually, I think this camera has failed. Android and sense combo is simply not a great combo looking at how One X runs on it. It still lags or daydream at times. mind u, hd2 hardware is 3 years old and day to day usage, its still performs well or on par. Screen resolution, colour, brightness on One x is way way better. I am just saying the ratio is wrong imo. If i want a bigger screen than the HD2, i would expect it to be bigger in all directions. And not just taller. i have to admit for HD2, when i am outdoor, i struggles to see the screen, which i really hate. My point is, as another poster has said. OneX is just like a evolution of the HD2. Not a revolution. I would love to one a One X again. But not at this kind of price tag and definitely at at this current stage of development.
To Reckless- i would want a phone to function as a phone. HD2 does just as well with 3 or 4 cores lesser. unfortunately, it doesn't do a bj. If i ever need one, i will pm U.
