It's in several reviews, though I can't remember which ones off the top of my head.
Its in the user guide that is out. HDMI is for user created content only (created on the phone). Definitely sucks, but not a deal breaker for me as DNLA is good enough for me. It's not like it is a feature other phones can do, then I would be pissed.

I was in hopes that being it reads divx... I could plug straight into the tv anywhere with my torrents : )
Damn. HDMI was my main justification for upgrading from Incredible. Now I am going to have come up with a new excuse. This is becoming harder since the X sounds like it is a bit baggy in terms of UI,even if it isn't called blur, and the DI has been rooted (although in a pain-in-the-ass fashion)

It should, they stated that it is only enabled when you are in the Gallery, so if you can play your movies in the gallery then you can use HDMI.
So it is not only pictures and movies you take it is all pictures and movies in the gallery, you just cannot use HDMI for your apps, IE Youtube, etc.

I don't have the device so I can't be certain, but the user manual for the device states only media created by the phone can be displayed via HDMI. So don't get your hopes up until you see someone doing otherwise.
With it being a signed bootloader i doubt we're going to have custom roms or drivers that fix this. Though who knows, once it's rooted, maybe there's just a config file that needs hacking. Depends on how deeply this is programed into the OS.
So are you saying that If I load a playable movie file into my telephone's video gallery......I should be able to watch it through the HDMI port? Kinda Confusing....cause I've heard some people say you can do it........others say you can't.

According to the user manual you cannot. So until someone posts proof otherwise, I would go with the user manual.

Me too, been on a old WinMo phone after I gave up my Imagio to an coworker to get their upgrade for this. Been 3 weeks of just using a phone as a phone, sucks!

More than likely anything you grab from a torrent isn't going to have DRM

So the FPS cap sucks, and the lag is frustrating, but I’m confident that these will be resolved as some point and I still love my launch day 002 EVO. Never had any of the physical issues that most other people had, with no screen separation or light leaks, and the last update seemed to fix the grounding issue (which was very rare and minor on my phone). The screen and size are just right for me. I’ve been waiting for this phone ever since I heard that HTC was working on a monster snapdragon phone at the end of last year. But I’ll still be trading it in for the Epic 4G. Why? DLNA.
I’ve been using an AT&T Tilt since it launched some 4 years ago (which is what I've been using until I got the EVO). It was great at the time, and has served me very well, what with loading custom ROMs and all. Even got Android working on it for a while (which was fun, but not very practical). One of the things I was able to do on the Tilt was the ability to map my shared home network media folders (which I use to stream media to my xbox360s) as a drive on the phone so that when I was connected to my home network over wifi on the phone, I could use coreplayer to stream all of my AVI files from my home network to my phone and watch them with virtually no stutter anywhere in the house.
I’ve yet to see any apps for android that will let me do that. Either you’re able to access the home networked files (with something like andromote), but it doesn’t play AVI files, or a decent AVI player is found (lovin’ Rockplayer), but will only play local files.
With the Epic 4G (and all of the Galaxy S variants, I think), not only can this be done, but it’s super simple through their Allshare app. And it plays AVI video files natively.
People say that you shouldn't choose a new phone based on possible future capabilities for your model of phone, that you're not even sure it will be getting - either through a hack, root, or an official update. The Epic is here, now (or will be soon), with my own personal killer app. So there you go. Why I’ll be switching to the Epic 4G on launch day.
It’s sort of win/win though – I’ll be giving the wife the EVO, and getting the Epic 4G for myself, so it will still stay in the family ;-)

Why, there are plenty of things you can do right in your own community. You can visit a dairy, and find out how milk is handled and prepared for delivery. Or plan a series of window displays on home safety. You can start a library. You can discuss with your dentist what you can do to make your teeth more attractive...

Tried orb - didn't care for the choppiness. With DLNA, we're talking same quality as loading the video onto the phone itself.

Now this is something I find fascinating, but in all honesty, this seems to be a much more complicated solution, and I would be willing to try it, if the solution on the Epic wasn't so elegant.
Question though - I have all of my media meticulously organized into various folders for movie genre and TV shows/seasons, which makes browsing to the right video file easy. How does browsing for the correct video file form the phone work on your end?

Tried enough to see that it was almost what I wanted. Unless I missed something, this will only allow you to stream from android to a DLNA device, but not the other way around. They also appear ot have a solution that will allow you to download files from the DLNA server to the andoid phone, but I don't want to download any of the files to the phone, just stream.

lol sure thats why they have released source code with drivers for the galaxy s before the phone was released. Thats why there cpu thats 1 ghz almost runs 2x faster then snapdragon. Thats why there code runs 20% faster then other android phone. Thats why they get 90 million triangles per sec and evo gets get 12. Thats why they have avi support and the best screen on any android phone because they suck right?
Anyway I am getting one as well and I would give my evo to the wife but she does not want it. She likes her N1 way better. I will never buy a crap htc phone again. I am so glad that Samsung has released the source code and are allowing us to mod the phone. I think they have learned from there past mistakes.

I never knew this turned into a bad mouth HTC thread. Go ahead and get your samsung, but don't come crying to us when something goes wrong, or you want features that you can get on the evo and not your phone.
Ok. So the media hub is out. Looks like you can rent and/or own movies depending on title. The renting is 2.99. I've found own for 9.99 and 12.99. I'm a little worried about paying DVD prices (or somewhat less for some titles) and not getting the DVD, or getting the ability to transfer to another viewing device, ie. dvd, computer. Anyone know what the lowdown is on transfers, etc? I know I've had a hard time trying to find a movie that I can actually put on this phone via dvd ripping from my own dvd library (if that's even legal) or for download from any legal source online. At least the media hub has that going for it.
Anyone know if there are other avenues to actually use the awesome power of this device to watch movies in my palm? Is Media Hub better than?
Ps. I think it is funny that Forrest Gump is listed as comedy. Nice job classifying that one guys.

Media hub payments
Ok. So I broke down and bought the latest star trek. Basically, you enter your credit card information into Media Hub the app stores it there (actually, I think it stores it on Samsung's server). I don't think there are any alternatives. Now, based on the current download rate and percentage, I should be able to watch it sometime next week.

3G? 4G? Wifi? On 4G, the previews always played for me instantly. Even the 2 and a half minute trailers.
I watched a few previews over 4g. I have to admit the video quality was excellent and playback smooth. This might be good for an occasional rental, but once netflix comes out for Android they can kiss this goodbye.

Well it looks like there is no AllShare support. Can't push this thing to my TV (actually PS3) for viewing. The movie doesn't show up in the AllShare list. I'm not surprised I guess, just disappointed. My guess is that the movie is not being stored in any meaningful format so AllShare couldn't read it if it wanted to. Of course, there could be a way around or some setting I'm missing. I don't think it's a setting at this point though. Media Hub has no settings anywhere that I can find.
The video quality is pretty awesome, no skips, studders, sloops, woops, or whillips. The sounds wasn't *bad*. It's a decent movie viewing experience - even for a big screen action blockbuster. Would be awesome during a long flight, or similar, without having to drag along extra electronics.
However, combined with there currently being no mini-usb to hdmi cable means no support to watch Media Hub movies on a bigger screen. Looks like I'm back to looking for another solution to watching movies on my phone. 12 bucks isn't really a good investment vs. the actual DVD/Blueray (3 dollars more on Amazon). If I was wealthier, maybe. I think this means I won't be using Media Hub, except for the one movie I already paid for.
About the download speed:
I didn't bother trying to watch it before the download was finished so I don't know if that is possible. I think it was a 1-2 hour download but I didn't keep track, maybe I could have started it sooner. Not to bad I guess (over wifi). I couldn't imagine doing this over 3g...definitely an overnight thing.
So i thought I would try to watch Avatar that came with my vibrant so I plugged in the microsd in the tab tried to launch the movie but all I got was that the movie was locked it asked me if I wanted to unlock it I selected yes but nothing happened, I the tried to play the trailer and it worked. What I also noticed was the the movie didn't work on my vibrant either I guess cause I am running a froyo rom the tab is also running froyo. Has anyone tried to play the movie? Any luck or suggestions.

You probably have to register your "Divx device", it's mentioned in the quick start guide that came with tab! (one of the first pages about licenses)
It's in the online manual as well:

ok maybe this will explain better what i was trying to say on my original post.
On the Vibrant we have a copy of Avatar which is labeled as follows avatar.dcf. now when you launch the stock video player on the vibrant the movie plays no problem. When i insert the microsd card from the Vibrant into the tab and i use the same video player i am unable to play the movie, as stated on my original post it states the the movie is locked and asks me if i want to unlock it but when i select yes nothing happens. hope this clarifies what i want to do.
sounds like it has some kind of protection on it which prohibits it from being played/copied to other devices...

Already, I was able to use Double twist to get my music off of iTunes and into my Xoom, that was pretty simple, and all is well.
I am going on vacation next Sunday, and I am going to need some movies to watch. Typically on my iPad, I can rent or buy a movie on iTunes and simply watch it.
I need to know the following:
1. Is there anyway to get protected movies off of iTunes and into the Xoom? I would rather not spend 10 hours ripping and burning a few movies.
2. What are my choices for movie download locations? Reliable, and virus free?
3. My experience with the Xoom has been a very positive one to this point, I just need a reliable and hopefully not a time consuming method to buy/rent movies, and/or a method to get movies already purchased from iTunes into the Xoom.

I don't know if this is the advice you are lookng for but you can always "barrow" movies from the internet via a torrent or download site like filestube. Although I haven't explored it yet, I believe amazon.com has some kind of video on demand service which would be comparable to iTunes video service I suppose. But until the xoom has flash support even that isn't an option. As far as the "barrowing" method originally mentioned, I wouldn't worry about viruses. The virus would have to be written for the android operating system and I dont think you will encounter that at this stage. This of course only applies if you are going to be downloading directly through three xoom. If you plan to use your PC first then transfer to the xoom, then I guess a little concern might be warranted, as always.
But the android market does have torrent apps, so direct downloads to the xoom is a viable option. Also torrent sites like btjunkie will have reviews/comments to give you an idea whether the file does what it says it should.
Also filestube can be used directly from the xoom. As far as finding good files, generally you want to look for results that have the movie name (or sometimes its abbreviation), the year it was made, "xvid", and that it its already in a watchable format i.e avi,mp4,etc.
These tend to almost always be bonafide files. Hope this helps.
Google really needs to get media support for their devices otherwise they will always border on the line of niche geek devices.

I have used a torrent client on my Nook Color to download a ep of Fringe it played flawless. It was only TV HD on not 720p but looked excellent. I think it took 10 minutes for a 325 Mb file no computer needed at all. I used rock player to play it. I would expect the xoom to have no trouble doing this.
Not sure what format it uses, but the Amazon Video market has an option for downloading for use on portable devices. It does look like you would have to start the process on your computer and then transfer the files to the device, but it might be pretty easy.

Stripping the DRM is something I haven't seen yet, however, on other Android forums, I've seen the program Tunebite mentioned a couple of times.
It basically records the file while it is being played on your computer (similar to what "other" drm removal tools do, but supposedly, it accesses the file differently, enabling it to run faster.
I have no experience with it myself though. I tend to stay away from those kinds of files myself.
It sure seems like there's a golden opportunity here for Amazon to be the Android equivalent of iTunes for purchases of movies, TV shows and music.

Amazon video on demand works right from the XOOM's browser. I haven't been able to copy anything to the actual device from the service, but you can at least stream all your Amazon videos.
Why do they make it soo hard to download movies and video legally? I've had such a hard time with DRM and such, that I've had to resort to other methods to get my media on my portables. I hate this soo much, I have no problem paying for my content, but if it is harder to pay them for it, than it is to "borrow" it, then why oh why would I pay for it? I would also like to see an answer to the OP. /end rant

A tool called requiem will remove the DRM. You're on your own to find it though.
#2 I grab my movies from tehparadox.com I have never dl'ed any viruses from that site. Plus its an active site if theirs a problem with at post ppl will always let you know before you download

I hate this soo much, I have no problem paying for my content, but if it is harder to pay them for it, than it is to "borrow" it, then why oh why would I pay for it? I am not sure, but here in the Netherlands downloading movies is legal. Uploading is not. At this moment usenet is a excellent source especially with Spotnet. Works like a charm after the authorities closed down FTD (database of this program was in the Netherlands, but was no longer considered legal). Spotnet however is new designed and has a database on usenet itself which is impossible to shutdown.
All movies, music, series can be found there in topnotch quality and downloading goes with 12MB (that is MegaByte per second), depending on your internet account ofcourse. We in the Netherlands have a maximum of 120Mbit at this moment.
Not sure if it will also works overseas, but you could give it a try.
Being that this dev community is the absolute best, I have to bring this to light.
Google Movie Support has just informed me that Google Movies will not work for rooted XOOMs. This just won't fly.
Is there anyone out there working on a fix or workaround for this?
I'd love root. I love movies. We shouldn't have to choose between the two.

I feel ya bro, and I'm pretty sure the devs are already looking into it. Since it is a DRM authorization issue, it is probably going to be a pretty good hack to get around it.
I'm confused by 2 things on this topic:
1) why does it matter if its rooted or not?
I would assume the answers is because root would allow us some magical privledge of copying a cache and possibly extracting video and then redistributing.
2) how the frig can it tell?

My guess is either one of: (1) checking for the ro.secure property being set, or (2) doing something "rootable", like being able to read a certain file/directory, etc.
If in the former case, I don't have an idea of what to do that wouldn't require the HC source, but in the case of the latter, it'd be relatively easy to ... wait- don't let me help El Goog out. It's not rocket science (think rootkit, but in reverse).
Well instead of listening I tried it as well with The Green Hornet and couldn't download it. Kept getting error but these developers will come up with the answers they have been nothing short of amazing when it comes to the Moto Xoom

This is the same with the blockbuster app on the Atrix. I can set SU to block requests from the app, but as long as I'm running rooted, it refuses to play (and tells you when you launch the app).
I don't understand the difference between this and running Itunes or Netflix on a "rooted" (admin capable) PC. Why is the phone different?

So did you still get charged for it? The wifi version won't even get the movies for awhile. I don't know why Google doesn't have it ready for both.
It isn't very surprising to hear. None of the major studios will allow media to be downloaded without some form of restrictive DRM and root access probably violates their policies.

? I saw the movie link in Web version of Market.
Yeah, you can order/get charged for it but it won't work. Need to contact customer service to get a refund. They told me they'll consider putting in a warning in the future before you buy it.

Strange, I have unlocked and rooted Nexus One and could play any Netflix video in official Netflix app, so DRM works on rooted system. So may be it's problem with something else?
If you order thru your web browser by going to the web based android market and play it thru your web browser it works.

Lol you're an idiot. It isn't googles fault they had to do this. If you were selling movies and wanted to make some money, would you want them to be distributed for free without your permission? I think not...
