Kindle on EVO - EVO 4G General

There is a new free Kindle version in the Market for Android.
I installed it, and I was thinking about buying a book to give it a try.
But in the Amazon store, there is a list: This item works for so and so and so, and lists most Kindles, except for Android. So I didn't buy it.
Maybe it would work, maybe it's just that they need to update their list of devices.
Has somebody used this application already?
Thanks.

I'd go try it on a free book first, and see if it'll sync over. I know a previous book I bought through the kindle store made it over just fine so I don't see why it wouldn't work...

Look up anything in the public domain. I think 20000 leagues under the sea, the adventures of sherlock holmes, that stuff..
it should all be free (was for me)
BTW - If a book lists nearly every device but left out Android, I'd bet a fair sum of money that's only because their website guys havn't updated the pages to included Kindle for Android. Again, not promising, but I'd bet thats what happened. They just need a few days to make sure everything is up to date and reflects the existence of Kindle for Android.

thanks all, I'll try.

Just use calibre to convert and book and use any book reader !

I searched "public domain". I found some $0.00 books. I selected one. they asked me for my credit card info, even though it's free. It downloaded it in a couple of seconds.
It looks great, a little bright to read, but I can adjust it.
thanks.

Aldiko Book Reader is free and it has a few free books, not sure if there is a way to save them and open them in Kindle, but it might be worth looking into.

Kindle app for Android works great and it syncs back with the Kindle. I just got a Kindle yesterday and had been reading like crazy... then I did a search for Kindle Android on Google and noticed they launched the app... downloaded it and it picked up right where I left off in my book. It puts all your books in the archive and downloads them when you decide to read one.
I just wish that pinch to zoom worked... or there was a zoom feature on the Kindle for pages that have diagrams and such...
One annoying thing - it locks the backlight at MAXIMUM brightness. Battery killer, hot phone, and too bright...

I used kindle extensively on my ipod touch and was anticipating the release of this app on android. After I installed, all my books showed up on my phone and I dl'd the last one I was reading and it synced up just fine and put me right where I left off on my ipod. I don't mind using some of the other free apps, but when I'm not at home and finish a book on the go it's kind of a drag to not have anything till I get home to convert another book to use on one of the other apps. With kindle, it's soo easy to just get another book off of the kindle store and have it right there on the phone with no conversion, of course everything comes with a price

Most if not all of the books in the Aldiko E-Book app are free, FYI

Are you talking about Amazon's/Kindle's "Whispersync?" It's supposed to support the Android app- I guess that info you saw was just not updated as the Android app was released...
That's my two cents

Its actually cheaper for Amazon to have people use devices besides the Kindle for their book purchases and downloads so they are trying to expand to as many devices and platforms as possible. I'm going to grab their PC app today and see if I can actually see the graphics in my books.

And yet another reason to get the EVO

I just saw that amazon announced that it is working on an android version of its kindle e-reader software. That opens up the possiblity of putting my kindle books on the evo. Of course you want to have a power cord or spare battery handy if you plan on doing much reading.

Classic. I was looking at the amazon software to see if perhaps I could sync the kindle with the evo. I am not sure if it can be done directly. I know I can sync the kindle to the pc and the possibly to the evo.

With Froyo, it will probably be wireless. That seems to be what Google is pushing now. Wireless everything.
it will be up to amazon to allow wireless syncing
I still want a kindle. If I read as much as I have few years ago, I would definitely get one. Or if the kindle dx drop to like 200, I will get one too.
I just don't read enough to warrant a kindle.

I had the money and i got a kindle for me and my wife even though I don't read that much, thinking it would motivate me to start reading, it did... for about a half a book... then I never touched it agian.
eventually sold it and got myself an iPad... I do actually use that a whole bunch and if I feel the urge to read I can, but yea... save your money if you aren't a dedicated reader. My wife is a huge reader and she absolutely adores hers. It's great if you are an actual reader, if you're not... don't bother. If to fill a gadget fix... look elsewhere the novelty wears off really quick on that one.

If the Android app is anything like the iPhone one it should sync to your Kindle/Amazon account.

Kindle

While the Kindle app runs, it is somewhat sluggish when page turning... definitely could use some work. This is the response I received from Amazon regarding it:
Hello,
I understand your concern regarding the update of Honeycomb version of Android.
At this point of time, we do not have specific information as to when this update will be made available. I have let the kindle team know about this, so that they will carefully review your suggestions and will regularly work on improvements to your Kindle experience.
Thanks for writing your valuable suggestions. We'll honor your commitment by continuing to provide the quality product availability and support you expect for your Kindle.
Thanks for using Kindle.

My original support request to them:
Comments:On the Motorola Xoom tablet, the application is very sluggish. I was just wondering when/if you guys would be releasing an update of the app to support the Honeycomb version of Android better.
Thanks!

I too am very interested in this update. Another point that could be greatly improved is when in landscape mode having the Kindle app show 2 pages instead of resizing one page to where its so wide its hard to read.
I am also very interested in an update to the Kindle app for honeycomb. A 2 page view for landscape viewing would be much better, it just looks goofy the way it is now. I'm thinking about using google books until Amazon updates the app, but I would rather have all of my content in one place.
Agreed. An update is very necessary. Two page landscape and performance are paramount.

Amazon is supposed to be launching their own Android app store this month:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/01/amazon-appstore-for-android-launching-this-month/
With all the attention they're going to get on Android with this app store launch, I can't believe that they wouldn't also be working on making the Kindle Android app shine on Honeycomb now that both the SDK and the first HW using it are out. I would assume it's just a question of time.
Amazon has been really goo about updating their apps, so I don't imagine it will take very long for them to get something out. With so many tablets coming out they won't want to miss out on that user base.
Yes I'm looking forward to a new tablet centric version of Kindle. I used the Amazon app almost exclusively on iPad it really shined there, it has to shine on Android tablets too. I agree that Amazon investing an Android App Market has to mean they intend to make Kindle work well with Android.
Right now I'm using Nook for Android until Kindle gets up to speed. I agree with the other comments the biggest issue right now is the lack of two page view in landscape. Reading books in landscape without it is awkward and reading it with the wide screen table in portroit mode is painful
Same here, looking forward to the kindle tablet app.
I have never used the kindle app on android before, but I have a quick question.
Does anybody know if you can hook up a kindle account to android if it's already linked to an actual kindle device? If you can, can you also read on both devices at the same time?

I believe you can. Kindle allows you to sync on any Kindle app. For instance, I have a book synced to my Kindle for PC, Kindle for Android and Kindle for Ipad.
Best part is it syncs your place within the book across all the platforms as well.

I have a kindle (3rd generation) that is linked to my Amazon kindle account.
When I ran the Android Kindle app, I logged in, and all of my previously purchased books were in the "Archived" section. I was able to open the book I was currently reading on the Kindle on the Xoom and read it without issue.
BTW, I haven't noticed any "sluggish" behavior from the Kindle app - but maybe I am just lucky.

Specifically the sluggish behavior is in the page turn. When you move the page it is really bad looking, which doesn't affect reading, it is more of a superficial issue. Just something they should polish when they fix landscape viewing (2 pages).
do not be surprised when Amazon announces that you will only be able to get further Android Kindle App updates via their App store.

As long as the app is free, I'll install their market for it. Then never use their market again. /shrug
looking forward to the updated kindle for honeycomb app.
when/if the amazon market comes, i'll welcome it. competition is a good thing...
i have a kindle and have a dozen or so books on my amazon account, so i definitely want to get the more tablet-friendly app asap.
hell, amazon is litteraly losing book sales from me right now as the last 2 books i bought through bn as their app is better on our xooms (though still needs to be updated as well).

I really can't grasp the new market

I might make myself look really stupid here but I struggle to use the new market
Al i can seem to get to is either
Top paid apps
Top free apps
Trending apps
Editors choice
Where's the tab to just take to the newest apps?! I don't want to see the same apps all the time!

You can get around that quite easy and get the free app of the day atleast! Glad I didnt miss out on all the popcap daily freebies!
well I've been trying to use the android web market page but it seems whatever I select (and pay for!) They state they will be downloaded to my tablet shortly.......
They never arrive, I then look in the normal market to get my purchase and the don't appear. I've had about 5 apps like that.

Are KFHDX used?

I just got the 7inch one, and it look brand new in the box shrink-wrap. But when I open the Silk browser, it automatically sent me to amazon. The weird thing is, when I check the Most Visited tab, it show me Amazon, Bing, Facebook, Yahoo and Wikipedia. I'm confused. I haven't gone anywhere except for Amazon by default. Did people at amazon use the device before they ship them out?
mine came that way to, most likely it was tested at the factory for quality control... just like a new car, they never came with zero miles on the odometer, they do get test driven a little.

No, your tablet was not used previously. They always come with those. It's Amazon guessing at what most people like and putting it in "Most Visited". That has happened on all of the previous Kindle Fires.

Amazon probably even get money for pre-populating the browser history like that.

[Q] Time to read customization?

I'm new to the NST, but I'd love to get a time left to read customization like the Kindle has. Is this even possible?

the kindle app for android has that feature, it works in my tablet, try it in your rooted NST
Surely Kindle isn't the only option we have. I found an app on the Play store, Moon+ that has the feature you are asking for blackeschiafone. It is currently not available for Android 2.1 though. Does it normally take the Kindle app >15 minutes to scan my Nook library? I only have 8 books.
