Don't BRICK your phone with the new update! - EVO 4G General

I think this needs a separate topic to get everyone's attention.
So after reading up this morning on various forums, there are two ways people are bricking their phone:
Being impatient and doing a battery pull. The update takes up to 30 mins. It will sit on the 4G logo screen for a while. Don't touch it!
Running the update again. There is a bug where it notifies you the same update is available. Only run the update once!!! A second time WILL brick your phone!

I like how you put that, good idea.

I just want to say that I'm completely stock, and the update didn't take nearly a half hour. Download plus install took maybe 15 minutes.

Yeah, same here but I read that some people are taking 30 mins. I just put it there to be safe.

I assume the reason it takes so long is because it is updating directly OTA?
If so, why doesn't the phone download the entire update, confirm the files and then update locally? Doing it this way should be MUCH faster and avoid this issue.

no one in their right mind would do a real OTA update, there are way too many variables to be transfering system files and updating at the same time. They download the update, confirm file integrity, then update from the file on the SD card.

Thats what I would have expected. So why does it take 15 minutes!! I have never flashed a rom that took longer than 3-4 minutes.
Edit: Don't forget also that no developer in their right mind would release an update that would brick the phone....and yet reports are that it is pretty easy to do!

idk, who says that HTC/Sprint are master coders and there are zero bugs in everything, there could be a bug in it that makes it sit in a few places.
there is a bug with this update that causes it to show up twice and applying it the second time bricks the phone.

Update only showed up once for me. No issues.

Yep worked fine for me. Also, easytether works fine with this update.

The reason the update is taking so long is because it's over 21mb. There's a new radio, updated qik, updated quickoffice, and tons more. That's also why the phone has to reboot 3 times also.

thanks for the information.

Unless the first two were silent... the process took about 15 minutes from start to finish, and I only had the bootup sound once, then it was done. No issues.

It is bricked. How to de-brick it?
As many others, I have inadvertently bricked the phone by installing the update twice.
Does anyone has a slightest idea how to debrick it? Waiting for a replacement might be quite lengthy ...

bump...
this is important to get back to the top with all the non-substantiated posts about "update = brick"...
this has facts - read them and follow accordingly... update = POSSIBLE brick

lol! an hour too late.
dammit.. my phone is bricked!
just when I start to like this phone....
On the phone with Sprint. The tech said they are getting a lot of calls about bricked evo.
Good job HTC! Time to sack those programmers.

Eris MR2 is live

Not sure yet if it is the same as the leak but here it is.
http://www.pcdphones.com/phone_downloads.aspx?bid=126&cid=1&mid=353&carrier=Verizon Wireless
Tip its the same as the leak.
Is this confirmed or OTA Pushed? How do we trust this website? Maybe they are just posting the leaked image.
MD5 of both RUU's leaked and this one match 100%
8B10DA4A49F762584D806AC398368D39
If That website is a "Reputable Source" then it appears the rom Football leaked is 100% Legit as is this. Windows EXE Matches 100%
that site is where verizon wireless hosts its updates, download a software update for any other HTC phone from vzw and that is where it will take you
Nice, Good to know then it appears all of us earlier updaters are in the good. Perhaps a Mod can merge these threads under "Droid Eris MR2 Update Official" or something of the likes, maybe a sticky with all the Updates and there MD5?
Do i have to wipe my phone and all of it settings for this update?
yes per the website it will wipe your device
So, I guess we are getting another update before we get 2.x on Jan 22, or is this the update on Jan 22. I was told by HTC and three diff VZW techs the update on the 22nd is some form of 2.x.
Who knows.... I hope your right but I won't be holding my breath.
Me too, I wish this MR2 is just a "incase build" theyll release it if there not done with 2.0 for our device? Either way, if there is no clear upgrade path from the MR2, I guess thats what phone insurance is for oops lost my phone!
Legit
It's Legit Folks heres from the VZW PDF, also VZW confirms over the phone. Heres the Fix:
"Rare instances where the display locked or
appeared to be in an out-of-service state when
attempting to wake up the DROID ERIS from
screen saver mode no longer occurs"
http://support.vzw.com/pdf/DROID_ERIS_Update.pdf
Another Confirmation...
The 1.17.605... software is 100% supported by Verizon. I had issues with my phone freezing and called them. They are shipping a new device with this update on the phone...
What a waste.. all it fixes is one thing, and not even the important thing.
Not even the important thing? I take it you were one of the lucky ones whose touch screen stopped responding? Mine did it several times a week. Sometimes during calls I was waiting for and couldnt answer, only had to yank battery and reboot... waste of 5 mins to call back.

Mine did it like twice the whole time I had it. Not as big a deal as, say, the WiFi chip never working, ringtone sometimes not going off, or how about the YouTube app never playing any videos? Or the constant switching from 3G to 1X after sending or receiving a SMS, resulting in slapping the USB cable into the bottom twice as often as you should??

OTA
Got this version as an OTA update last night. Hopefully what we heard about this being the update dropped on the 22nd was untrue; holding my breath for 2.1!
Just got the OTA as well. Forgot to grab a google link before i installed it though
Still don't see the new update on phone, even under the update section.

So it's Nov. and I still have no OTA update.

I got this phone in early Sept. Running it completely stock except using Launcher Pro Plus. Haven't rooted it because it's hardware locked. I read that all the customers will get the update by the end of October. Am I the only one that hasn't received their update officially over the air? Should I just wait a couple more days?
I just tried dialing *#*#8736364#*#* to start software update and just got connecting to DM something in notification bar. That went away after a couple mins. and tried start software update again. Got the same results.
I would wait a few days and if by Nov 1st you don't get the update then you can call your carrier and ask them to force it to your phone.
Or you could just do it manually, which honestly I suggest, because I just like many others , got a soft brick when I installed the update over the air.
You can use the software that Samsung put out, Mini Klies , to apply the update.
here's the link: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...ID=2&PROD_SUB_ID=557&PROD_ID=560&AT_ID=341559
I encountered a strange issue updating through mini kies. All went well, and my phone was running sluggishly so I did a reset and my build number went back to'eclair' but my baseband stayed ji6. I odin'd back to stock and I might just wait for the ota

I guess I can wait a couple more days. I waited this long. I'm just afraid of anything negative happening. My vibrant is hardware locked, so I'm scared to do anything to it. If the official OTA update messes me up, can I do anything to fix it, or get a new phone or anything?

Honestly, if you want to take an hour or two to read up on it, it's really easy to get rid of the hardware lock by flashing a fix through Odin. Yeah, it's daunting at first, but I took the plunge and now I'm a ROM-flashing whore. You probably don't need to read that much, but I did just because of my cautious nature. There's a thread in the Development forum with the fix and instructions.
My take is that it's far more likely the OTA will mess you up than using Odin (use v1.3!). Once you remove the lock, it's *almost* impossible to brick this bad boy.

Heh, I came from an ancient Blackberry, if that makes you feel better.
But yeah, using Odin is stupid easy (but you need to be on Windows AFAIK). Just to give you a quick overview of what you'll need to do, you need to download
1) the Samsung phone drivers,
2) Odin 1.3,
3) the hardware lock fix, and
4) the Android SDK (just for adb, which is like a terminal program that you use to boot your phone into download or recovery mode; since a hardware locked phone can't get into download or recovery with the buttons, you use adb to force it to reboot into download or recovery).
Use adb to boot your Vibrant into download mode, drop the right file into Odin and go. There are actually good Youtube videos on using Odin too (can you tell I researched the crap out of this before risking it?).

I am under the assumption that you can root, but if something goes wrong, you can't do anything to fix it. I was going to get a replacement with tmo, but heard this update will fix the hardware lock issue. I also didn't want to risk getting a refurb for my replacement phone.

Yeah, it's coming up on the end of the month and I haven't gotten the update either. I'm not closed to using the Mini Kies update, however the last time I updated something from Kies, (READ: JI6) it really ****ed things up, so much so that I'm still feeling the effects. Will the Mini Kies update prevent me future updates like Froyo, or will I me married to Kies and unofficial updates and flashes?

i know this is probably a really stupid question, and i'm sure i'll get comments telling me to do research before posting.
but i did look for awhile, and from what i gather, a notification should have popped up on my xoom.
but one did not.
so how do i update the dang thing?
You wait, leave it connected to the internet (WiFi or 3g), it will eventually download and prompt you to install.
I just got mine, all I did was wait patiently.
sent from the honey moto
well i've been connected to wifi for about 6 hours now, and i'm always connected through verizon, but i haven't seen a single thing to do with an update.
They won't roll out the update to all devices at the same time. They have to do it in batches so they can minimise any update related problems should they occur.
So basically, my device is going to start downloading this update, without any previous consent by me, and will just prompt me to install once the update is downloaded?
Well, if it's like any other OTA update I've had it'll ask you before it starts to download. But yeah, essentially.
You will get an icon in your notification window near the clock. Click on it and it will tell you a system update is available, and give you 3 options; Just click 'Install Now' and watch it go and in 10 min (or less) you will be updated.
Sweet deal. Thanks guys... I was seriously starting to get very distraught.
I only owned an ios device before... but my girlfriend has a Captivate... so watching her be unable to get froyo for so long was starting to get me worried about my Xoom.

While yes that what I would do if it were mine (My Incredible is running CM7 RC2), she doesn't care much. Just as long as it works for her then she is happy.
Yeah, my wife's the same. Luckily she's on Froyo (Desire) so it's not really an issue. I would forcibly update it to Gingerbread if I thought she'd notice.

Your device periodically checks google's servers to see if there is update. Updates are released in batches so your device may not see an update until some time later. They can be downloaded off of wifi. Don't worry you're not hosed.

That happened on my Rooted/stock ROM Evo. Every now and then it pops up asking me to install an update that it just downloaded. Easy enough to simply decline, but pretty anoying though. At some point, I'll wander over to the Evo forum to see about (perhaps) pushing the new Cyanogen ROM, but im finding it hard to get excited about the phone these days...

Think the stores have the updated Atrix yet?

I plan on exchanging my phone really soon (sometime this week). Resets randomly and has poor battery life when IDLE. Does anyone have an idea of how long stores usually take to get the updated system version of phones? Thanks in advanced!
why dont you just do the OTA update?
I've got the phone for about 2.5 weeks now and haven't had one random reboot till the update. Now i've gotten 3 random reboots so far. I guess it's just one of those things you have to live with with a smart phone.

Tried this and it worked! Thanks a ton man!
Motorola's software landing is extremely slow. When installing 4.1.57 through this yesterday prior to installing the beta update 4.1.83, I found it takes a loooooonnggg time even to search for updates, let alone install them. Also, I found it would not work (connect to my phone) unless I had USB debugging enabled, and mass storage selected. I also had to plug my phone in after I had started the update software on my PC. I did this all 3 times yesterday due to attempts to install 4.1.83 under different conditions, and it took longer to update to 4.1.57 than it did the flash back to 4.1.26.
