rooted froyo for galaxy? - Galaxy S I9000 General

hey, wondering how they create froyo roms for different phones and when we can expect one for the galaxy s. my friend just got froyo on his g1 and i know theyre no where near releasing an official froyo build for the g1. i've got a nexus one and waiting to see what kind of performance upgrades the galaxy sees after froyo. should be impressive.

Samsung update politics!?

Hello!
I have heard that Samsung is very very bad with update their phones and give them new and updated software...
Has somewhere an idea how this could go with the I9000? It will come out with Android 2.1 and 2.2 is now on the run!?
Greetings... Plattfuss

2.2 isnt even out yet, and alot of current phones from various manufactures have different dates for the 2.2 update.
But if you are talking about rooted devices ... guranteed that once galaxy s is rooted it will have froyo.
Besides that me persoanlly i dont really care for the 2.2 update. Im running a stock nexus one and the only thing i miss is wifi tethering. But that comes out of the box with the galaxy s.
According to gsmarena and another website (can't remember which) Samsung have confirmed that GS will get an update to 2.2, so if you're worried just wait until it is officially out. If it takes too long you can buy another phone instead.

How customizable is SGS?

I have been into HTC bandwagon for quite some years and I've learned that every HTC device that I owned have been hacked to run on new OS that isn't designed for it. I am wondering how likely developers can homebrew their SGS from Eclair to Froyo to Gingerbread, IF Samsung never leaks or release these upgraded firmwares.
Don't get me wrong, I'm still very much in love with SGS but I just couldn't make up my mind between HTC Desire and SGS, especially in its future software upgrades.

If you are looking for long-term suppor the Desire is probably bettor of since it has almost the same hardware as the Nexus One, and the roms for the nexus are pretty easily hacked onto the Desire.
If you check on the Dev section, you will see that Samsung have already leaked pre-beta copies of Froyo, and as for Gingerbread, until the specs are confirmed no-one knows if the hardware requirements are within the spec of any current phone.
As post #2 says, Desire would be a safer choice.
Even as of now, there are no available custom roms for SGS. Only mods of the existing leaks. That might change in the future, but let's comment on the current situation.
If you want quicker / faster Firmware release, pick Nexus One or HTC Desire.
Nexus One get the most latest update from Google OTA.
And HTC Desire is the little twin brother that born few months later with a very similar hardware space. + HTC Desire has few famous custom ROM writer that release nightly build firmware if you want to take the risk and challenge.
Now that SamsungFirmware has stopped the leak of beta firmware.
"Samsung NOT happy with 2.2 rom leaks for Galaxy S. We will wait for more sorry guys we dont want trouble "

hold my breath for this

Samsung Galaxy S and Samsug Galaxy Tab gets Gingerbread. (No info about other devices.)
It's possible.... especially with no timeframe, it is very possible. If you, hmm, catch my drift.
yea if we live in a magical land filled with roads of chocolate and gumdrops......
And where a Samsung-branded magical dragon delivers the updates to your phone personally, and when Samsung misses a deadline the dragon cries.... and his tears turn into Jellybeans! And those Jelly beans cure cancer.... err, I think I've gone a bit too far.
i'm guessing that samsung is going to release both 2.2 and 2.3 at the same time. everyone will have to listen to KSAM radio to get the update....

this sounds very plausible because the tab is just an oversize galaxy S, and the new phone they're releasing for ATT looks just like the vibrant. If those two devices gets gingerbread, it wouldn't be long until someone port it or samsung actually releasing it for the vibrant too. Just have to wait and see. This would be better than getting 2.2.
well me i would be more inclined to believe that one of the devs like team whiskey, eugene will have gingerbread before samsung or tmo delivers on all their broken promises.
Frankly I do not care at all, I see Froyo as a HTC upgrade, one that every HTC phone needs and should have. It really woke the hell out of my HTC Android phones up!
Now with the Vibrant? NONE of the leaks have made my phone any faster, in fact the last 2.1 I used was a lot more stable than the best 2.2 rom I have used so far (and I have used quite a few of them). The only advantage I have seen is much better GPS locks and faster internet speeds with the JL series modem files (outside only, worse than the 2.1 modems inside a building) and much better reception overall than the 2.1 modems.
So IMO Froyo update will only be a modem/gps/reception update, no real speed or any other advantage here.
Now gingerbread will be to us what Froyo is to the HTC devices, if we will get it at all that is

It is definitely possible that official 2.2.1 Froyo is optimized for the hummingbird (i also heard that it may have a newer file system), thus giving the SGS the same boosts as snapdragon devices... wishful thinking of course...
so possibly they will merge parts of 2.2.1 with 2.3 giving us a taste of both in the near future possibly before 2012
The tab needs 3.0 not 2.3...

hey samsung or tmo doesnt know that they're going to run the tab on 2.3 and promise updates all year long.

Anything less is fAIL, like it is now.
I do not really give a damn anymore. 2.3 would be really nice, but with the Roms from EB, TW, Master, Jellete, I could go on ...all these guys have done great things in the rom world. I have modded and tweaked this phone so it now performs like supped up BENZ.......... really only S2 will move me away from this phone. all this worry over Samsung delivering...... is just "old lady wring your hands complaining" ....like I said who really cares at this point?

Gingerbread to come out at end of march

i had talk with a guy working in samsung and he told me that Gingerbread will come out of testing in march/april i hope it will be available in april
This is good news!
But we know the update politics of Samsung. I think it would be around September ;-)
Darkyy 9.3b3 * DAMIANGTO Kernel * XXJPY * ADW Ex * SteelBlue 2.01 Theme
I can't wait!
I think it will come with Galaxy S II, not our I9000
@ragin: i dont think they meant gingerbread release in general, because its already available with the nexus s.
another one saying same old **** we wont get gingerbread its on nexus so we may get ice cream which is cross between 2.3 and 3.0 its ice cream sandwich 2.4 but only if we are lucky there is now galaxy s 2 so the end is coming

You saying that we won't get 2.3 is just as helpful as the OP's post - zero facts, just I think, he said, she said etc.
i dont think we will get it either, i think samsungs main focus now is the Galaxy s2,,
its typical of samsung to ditch its old owners and favour the new ones.. But if it wasnt for us Galaxy S1 owners,,, there would be no Galaxy S2....
Hopefully Cyanogen Mod will be stable before this 'gingerbread release' and thats exactly what im gunna use.
In my region we don't even have 2.2.1, I dare not think so far as yet.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
well 2.2.1 with speedmod and voodoo sound my phone is finally doing everything i wanted/needed of it with good battery and performance. so i am happy for the moment.. will be picking up an sgs ii hopefully bootloader will be unlocked or i may be selling it quick.
I believe we will get the 2.3. I've been running 2.2.1 since 27/12/10 so march/april would be about right for an update.
It does make sense that samsung would give us gingerbread. Afterall, right now, they are heavily promoting the galaxy S, even on the dawn of the galaxy S2 arriving. I'd say we'll be supported for some time to come.
i9000/JPY. fast n lagfree. good times.
What a bunch of useless haters are you!
Why don't you take the time to look and see how much devices HAVE 2.3 before dissing Samsung...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Android_devices
And the only way HTC has more devices with update is because of Nexus One, similar hardware = easyer update... But then, the desire (to name this one) just got 2.2 in the US...
Galaxy S, with a pretty much different hardware got it faster!
It's just hear say. I'll believe it when I see it.
What i don't understand is where are the leaked firmware like there was with froyo

Perhaps not ready for this particular device yet? Or they are keeping an extremely tight lid on it?
well as stated i honestly dont believe we will get official upgrade as nothing showing on open source or samfirmware they said in dec it will be out in feb here we are at the end of said month still no gingerbread think we may get ice cream 2.4 but much later in year ----looks as though cynagenmod 7 nearly there so be only way to get 2.3 been watching tried earlier release very stable so now waiting on codeworks as be waiting long time for samsung nw they have a new babie sgs 2

if samsung was going to update the phone past froyo why havnt the said it is getting ginger bread officaily to sell more galaxy s..if any body replys that samsung india twitter said it is.. they said ginger beard was going to be releaed for our phones i dont wait a beard on my phone and dont thing any body else does
If SGS is to get Android 2.3 it will be a few months after the release of SGSII. Because 2.3 is a selling point for SGSII. But SGSII really need Android 2.4 to get better dual core support. And 2.3 really isn't that big an upgrade.
So I would suggest that you forget about 2.3 and enjoy your great and fast SGS with 2.2.1 for now.

Galaxy s phone to get android 2.3 in march gingerbread!!!!

Please tell me does anyone Believes this B.S. lie by samsung. even if we do get gingerbread on the galaxy s. When can we expect it on our Vibrant. Knowing Samsung maybe never. Please Give me your thoughts on this my XDA peers.

Its like.the froyo rumors all over again. I am optimistic that we have better chances at getting gb than other competing phones such as the droid x due to similarities with the nexus s. Plus samsung and tmo said they would start updating more often if I recall correctly.
well considering thats for the i9000, i high doubt us U.S galaxy S folks will see it in march. I'd expect to wait the same amount from when european Galaxy S got 2.2 to us.
Well when Galaxy S is mentioned you must remember the i9000 had an official 2.2 several months before any US launched Galaxy S... So it is possible that the i9000 may get an official 2.3.. keep in mind however the Galaxy S 4g was just launched on T-Mobile and with 2.2.1... The i9000 has had 2.2.1 official running for a while... I could see the Galaxy S 4g getting an official 2.3...

but now i9000 roms run on vibrants witout soft reboots THAT SAID I9000 ROMS = VIBRANT ROMS = I9000 GINGERBREAD = VIBRANT GINGERBREAD .
Remember i9000 got FroYo in the beginning of November.
The Samsung Vibrant, the first of the other 3 US variants was the first to receive the FroYo. In January.
Leaks from FroYo to Vibrants appeared around November so around april we might get gingerbread leaks?

meh.... this is the froyo run around all over again. i've got gingerbread on my vibrant as of yesterday. sure it's not perfect, but the only downside's i've encountered is no gps and battery life isn't the best.
march? It will be out december.

Not true, we need the 2.3 source before we can get a kernel that fixes issues thats will come with 2.3 I9000 roms. What we have now is because of the recent 2.2 source release
Definitely not here in the states.
The march update is for I9000 which is the Korea/Europe edition.
Vibrant and any other versions of the Galaxy S here in the USA
will not be anytime soon. It was like that for the Froyo as well.
I really don't care because I use a custom ROM anyways
March 2012
