It does not have a pad. So you just have to be accurate with your fingers. It's not that hard by the way, because of the 4" display.

Thanks Axefield.
I've got a G1 at the moment and on some web sites the links are so small I have to use the trackball. My girlfriend has got a iPod touch (hiss - boo) and the smooth pinch and zoom feature means zooming in and then clicking a tiny link is easy. Does the Galaxy have smooth pinch and zoom via finger?
Thanks again

Yes, pinch zoom or double tap works very smoothly. But honestly, it's not needed most of the times because of the 4" screen.

Cool. Thanks for clearing that up.

Thank You for Your answer, but I am new in Galaxy. When and where could I press this button. Certainly, in sms mode it`s working, but in the game? I`m sorry for my ignorance ( so, for my english too)

Trust me there's not a game that needs the D-pad.
The emulators all have on-screen keys and they work fine. ( because it has a WORKING multitouch controller. )

Happy camper here. You do not WANT a trackball with your phone. They tend to get sticky and all and cease functioning properly afterwards.
This coming from a BlackBerry user for 5 years.

Solution for root
Some ROMs don't have dpad enabled keyboards, the TrueDvorak Pro keyboard has a nice gesture based dpad. Multilingual keyboard also has a press and hold to access dpad option, like the samsung one.

the screen of diamond isnt so big as iphone ...
there is only one keyboard to use with a diamond and that's TouchPal. have tried most keyboards and still looking for a better one. This is the fastest and best by a long way once you get used to using it.

Finger Keyboard VGA is the best IMO, especially if you need language specific characters like I do with Swedish. See link in my sig.
Touch Pal 3.5
Just love this keyboard app. The predictable text regarding word corrections and predictable word choice is phenomenal.
If you take the time to Read through this, then you will discover the hidden potential of this app
The video is great but Reading is Believing !

Disable pinch to zoom for FPseCE

How can I do that. When I use multi touch pinch to zoom activates and makes problems.
it is very annoying when playing a game but its useful when you configure the buttons n whatnot
Donate and get supporter version plus you get multitouch and no latency on the onscreen buttons

Well it would not be hard to enable it and disable when done but I do not have problems with config anyhow.

I have donated and pinch to zoom has nothing to do with FPseCE it is bloody rom's that do that. No matter which rom I use if pinch to zoom is enabled it does that to FPseCE.

Using BsB Tweaks, go to Menu, Pinch to Zoom, and look in the list for fpsece_0.10.exe
Tick the box and go Options, Remove selected apps.
If it's not in that list then you'll have to do it directly via the registry, but I believe that list is what's in the registry, so it should work.
Hope this helps

It is not in that list. I have found a registry that holds data similar to BSB in name. It is not there as well. I have added the app to blacklist no working.
that's odd, as on last few supporter versions pinch to zoom is not working anymore. btw: multitouch is working sweet now, we only have to wait a bit for onscreen d-pad.

Yeah - I got the latest version emailed to me yesterday and it doesn't pinch to zoom. Doesn't make sense to do so if you're using multi-touch to control the game.

I think it was there all along. I mean I play some games like crash bandicot where I use that?!
I think I do or am I missing something?
oh boy... look, now You can have emulated analog stick or four separate directional buttons. schtruck is going to add 8 directional onscreen d-pad in the future. this means, that playing any game from then is going to be a pure pleasure.

handwriting recognition

I tried installing handwriting recognition for sms (cant remember the programm), but removed it because it the screen wasn't responsive enough. I could only write a letter if i pushed down with my finger and not just with the tip. This is the same in gesture search which isnt so bad as you are only typing a couple of letters.
I've always had handwriting recognition since my SE P800 then P900 & X1. and it has always been really easy to use and responsive. was quite dissapointed that the X10 didnt have it as a standard feature for SMS out the box. Typing out msgs is a pain. Also tried the upgrade to the HTC keyboard which was better, but it says that after installing it, it could copy your passwords etc. So not to keen on using it.
Has anyone tried any handwriting recognition apps after removing the screen protector? or know of any good Apps?
Edit/Delete Message
Try using SlideIT. You slide your fingers over the letters and it works out which word you want to type. I can probably text quicker on my phone more than I can type on my keyboard. There's another product currently in beta test called swipe which will do the same thing. This thing make me smile every time I use it!!

Usually handwriting is not working (or at least not well enough) on capacitive touch.
On resistive is another matter
So, X10 has capacitive so, no, won't work as you expect it
One thing I do miss from my G900 is the handwriting recognition. I became quite expert with it and could certainly have written this text faster on my G900 than I have on my X10 !

So why all the hype about capacitive touch? for me its a big step backwards not having decent handrwriting recognition ability. I also could write alot quicker using it, after all whats more natural than writing. When the X1 came out with a physical keyboard I was quite dissapointed, it made the phone thicker than needed and gathered dust.

It seems to be what the public wants (or has got used to) I quite agree that handwriting recognition is far easier than touchscreen keyboards. My first thought on the iPhone was that it was inferior because it did not have the ability to do handwriting recognition, but the text input on the iPhone seems to have become industry standard...
Well, i have an 5800 XM nokia with resistive.
It has a stylus for handwriting ... i've never used it.
Also, on resistive the touch is not so ... smooth lets say.
You really have to press the screen
With capacitive a light touch is enough.
If you ask me, i prefer capacitive.
Way easier to use it ...

I find it the complete opposite with resistive I could use my nail, with capacitive I have to use my finger tip and press hard, which doesnt make good for quick writing. Ive had 3 SE phones with resistive. and my x10 & my walkman have capacitive.

problem with typing

The hd2 is a real nice phone but im having this problem. When i try to type a sms it takes me a lot more time then normal. I think this is because of the touchescreen which works capacitive.
But my friend recently bought the htc legend which has the same touch input and i can type very fast and accurate.
Im also having trouble if im surfing the internet and like most forums there are multiple pages on bottom right as 1 2 3 4 5 6 .. but those numbers are so small i cant click the correct one. If i want to go to 2 im either pressing 1 or 3 or4 and maybe if im lucky i get 2.
Is there anything to solve this?
The sms and keyboard issue is a well known problem on the HD2. It simply sucks, especially if you've got many messages on your phone.
Regarding the web browsing, you'll have to use the "pinch-to-zoom" (like on the iPhone) to zoom in even more so that you can hit the buttons. Remember, most webpages aren't made for tiny screens like on the HD2. They're made for like 17" or more.

Ah so fingekeyboard good?? I tried swype which works great but doesnt have dutch
I have opera 10 ye and i cant use pinch zoom, or do i need zoomer for this to work?

fingerkeyboard 2.1 is normal typing, not swyping.. i dont like that swyping thingie^.^
yea, if u use opera 10 and want pinchzooming u need Zooomer for that.. search it in the forum, im sure u will find it
just scan the entire device with zooomer and activate multitouch in opera10
I tried fingerkeyboard 2.1 just now and typed a sms without making 1 single typing mistake! I did some mistyping but with the t9 it was corrected perfectyly very happy with it
Im going to try zoomer now haha

Keyboard is not good. Missing letters some time.

I got my X10 2 days ago. Previously i was using iPhone. Everybody know iPhone user interface is simply awesome. I like X10 as well. the issue currently i am facing is that when i type my messages some times i missed the letter and i have to press the letter again. specially letter 'a'. I am using android keyboard. Is this issue is because of keyboard or it's software issue. i know touch is perfect because i can see zoom in image of the letter. I also tried to disable sound, vibrate, dictionary etc. but no luck so far.
though in landscape it works fine.
Can anybody guide me how can i solve this issue?
Thanks,
I had the same problem with both the Android and standard keyboards.
The only way I fixed it was to install the HTC Keyboard. Works fantastic and it has a calibration tool so you can make it even more accurate than it already is.
Search for HTC X10 keyboard on google, I think there is a tutorial on esato or se-nse.
I'm afraid that this has become old news when it comes to the x10.
At the moment I can only suggest a workaround or two.
I have installed the HTC keyboard which I find very accurate. It can also be customized to allow the volume controls to control the cursor whilst typing.
Personally I find this to be the best solution.
Better keyboard is a paid app that can be downloaded from the market and offers another good solution.
I have heard in posts that swipe keyboard is another good alternative.
Finally I have heard that upgrading to the latest firmware available may help things. I debranded and upgraded to 1.6 but I still used the HTC as its familiar.
Another option is the Smart Keyboard Pro
yo try the app called shape writer. Its simply amazing, u will love it
HTC keyboard.. easy & free
Smart Keyborad PRO & Swype are also good options
actually the true problem to this is the sluggishness of the touchscreen which you'll experience in most other applications as well. the only solution is to type slower since no matter which keyboard you try you will always experience some random unset delay after each key before it actually registers on the screen. that by itself will hinder your ability to type fast and will introduce additional typos.
If you use SlideIT keyboard then you won't have any problems with sluggishness. ( which I've not experienced anyway). Its not as attractive add swype, but I find it much more accurate.

Sent from my X10i,
using SlideIT keyboard.
You can have landscape size buttons in portrait with 'Big Buttons' keyboard from the market, it takes a chunk of screen but your typing will be perfect
Thanks a lot, i just trid "big buttons", love it, the best one for people like me who are not very handy with their fingers

make sure you correctly enable the htc_ime mod keyboard from the list of keyboards in the input method options.
to bring up the input method option, when your vr keyboard is visible, long press any area where you input text and select htc ime mod.
If the htc keyboard is not available from that list, go to settings, locale and text and tick htc keyboard.

It does not matter if you type slow. it's some other issue i can't figure out the reason maybe SE know it well. you can saw a issue which can't be replicated
I guess the problems of typing are related also to the protective screen

i don't think so. because other keyboards are working fine. the problem is with the firmware
I'm using shapewriter keyboard (free on the android market) ... perfect alternative to the swype keyboard & similar as well for those who arent able to get their hands on swype due to its limited beta release
Try ThickButton - it's pretty awesome - predicts what you want to type, and expands the size of appropriate keys, making the others smaller... You can also select how much they'll expand by (esp if you have really fat fingers, or type with your toes.)
