Postponing release until after 2.1 in Q3? - XPERIA X10 General

I got to thinking...bad sign.
Is there a chance you could pull an iphone dev team and hold off on release until the next major one from SE? Like how the iphone devs did with the 4.0 jailbreak where they waited so that Apple wouldn't patch the exploit. If it's relatively easy to patch it might be better to keep it undisclosed until 2.1 is released so they don't just patch it.

That's a long time to wait and see. SE themselves have pretty much admitted that their adjusted "Q3" release for Eclair on the X10 really means the end of Q3 (ie: late September), as they said the rollout would be Q3 through early Q4.
Also, what's the point in waiting. Root means ROM chefs can cook up FroYo ROMs for the X10, bypassing any need to ever install the official X10 Eclair release.

As far as I know we can downgrade our builds so it shouldn't be an issue.

Well the X10 is still being sold so it might start shipping with 2.1 after that release and if the exploit can potentially work on X8, which might ship with 2.1, it would mean that if it's released now SE might "fix" it making the X8 harder to root.

For now, but there's no guarantee SE won't start locking down updates so that the updates need to be signed for the update to even start taking place.

come on! if the are interesting to block root down they will!! we are talking about Sony Ericsson, you think they're weirds (at least technically speaking...)

Well - for what it's worth - SE did clarify on their forums that though they're not supporting rooting, that simply means they won't do anything to ease the process and not that they're actively going to try to prevent rooting from happening.
With that said, they could always fix the exploit used by the rooters and say it's a security fix, and... oops... it also happened to prevent the existing root from being performed.
I agree with the rooters decision not to release the exploit they're using, and hope they can mask it in their final public root process to make it harder for SE to figure out.

couldnt resist asking this question.....
for how many days can you keep this off?
how many 1.6 versions do we have for x10?
will it not take a week for SE to cover this exploit even after 2.1 and release a new version?
i am not against anyone or their ideas (respect the devs behind root and their master minds)...but just my 2 cents to this.... i dont think stopping the root for 3 months will gain us so much....if wanted SE can burry the root exploit in a week's update after 2.1.....

I thought that now we have a rootable signed rom even if SE patch the exploit in future firmware, we can always downgrade to the current firmware then install customizations from there.
I dont see an easy way for SE to block downgrading as the current signed firmware is hosted all over the web and it can be flashed using the debranding method without connecting to SE servers.
what will be interesting to see is whether root gives us a way of signing new firmware or flashing non signed firmware..
ohhh the possibilities !

There is only one version of 1.6. The rest is just changes made by the manufacturers.
From my prior experience with HTC, once you achieve root, you NEVER want to update your phone using their official Rom. NOT matter how enticing the newer version of the rom is. It is on the manufacturers' interest to close the loopholes.
For example, when the Rogers branded HTC Magic was upgraded to include the Sense interface, it closed the root. People had to wait like three months before someone could root the phone again.

I don't think SE will try to patch the root. Why do I think that?
(1) It takes them so long to even come out with firmware/OS to begin with, it's just too much effort for them to add anything else on the plate.
(2) Se knows that blocking any efforts will hurt their bottom line, they want to sell more devices so why hurt that?

SE could actually patch the loop hole or whatever in an update by accident anyhow.....

Exactly. Waiting for 2.1 to be released might be a fruitless waste of time.
The best option is to hide the roothack mechanism as best they can. There's only so much you can do.

I'd agree, were past decisions not to the contrary. If they really wanted to sell more devices, they:
1.) wouldn't have released buggy firmware to reviewers the world over, resulting in mediocre to poor reviews prior to launch.
2.) would have included multi-touch support in the X10 hardware, as they had originally stated.
3.) would not be taking their sweet time getting an OS update out for the X10 line, and would more than likely already have 2.1 available with 2.2 set for later this year.

......and perhaps SE would be secretly happy that root has been achieved so that moves all of us complainers off their backs so they can focus on updates for the majority of their users...

Of course not, but chances are that they'll start shipping the new phones with it already installed. Like the X8 or any X10 made after the release for that matter.

True, but some of the features included in Sony's update would be integrated into a cooked ROM update.

I'm thinking of being able to root the ones released with an update already installed. I doubt it will happen, it's just food for thought at this point.

quick question..
what's the point of them closing the loopholes?
i mean.. it's not like nintendo ds or psp where you hack it and you can d/l games for free and they lose revenue on that..
we just want to be able to use the phone to it's max potential ..how it was meant to be when built..
so why is this not supported by companies and why do they make it hard for ppl to root?

X10, will be updated Eclair or to Froyo? What do you think?

After the last news that they say that in May probably there should promise to be Android 2.2 (Froyo): what do you think that it will do SonyEricsson? Will it update 2.1 (eclair) or to 2.2 (Froyo)?
I think that if it updates Eclair(2.1) it will be an error because Froyo has many progress
Rgds
SE will not update to a system that is not available during the updateprocess...
who says it's unavailable? to you and me, maybe
Yes well.. It's still undergoing production and isn't done.
I bet that the update will be to 2.1: they have started the work on 1.6 and they have released the phone with 1.6 even if 2.1 was already available for months. SE will probably never update to 2.2.
i don't know...i wouldn't be so sure of it
even tho Froyo is "undergoing production" that doesn't mean that they can't be working together with google or whoever's developing it and test it on the way it's being done
if that weren't possible than that would mean that first we'd have to wait for Froyo to come out and then NO phone in general would have it for months until the phones are adjusted, that to me doesn't make sense
it's like saying windows 8 is awailable but none of you can install it on your system until we've adjusted it
if you get my point...

That already, it is logical, but SE has said that it will update 2.1 in September, that's why he was asking about it because it is supposed that in September Froyo 2.2 will have already gone out
X10 will be a constantly the 'last version' phone. We're stuck with 1.6 when 2.1 is out in the wild, and we will be stuck with 2.1 when all other phones have 2.2.

SE's comments regarding upgrades were all part of the below article: can you please tell me where in there Harold de Kort (Communications Manager at Sony Ericsson) states that the X10 will be upgraded specifically to Android 2.1, or where he mentions "September" as a release date?
Major update for Xperia X10 after Summer
In the final paragraph the writer even states specifically that SE hasn't stated which version of the Android SE will be going to with the X10:
Although Sony Ericssn has to make her own interface available for a higher version of Android, the interface will not chage a lot. Sony Ericsson herself does not make a statement on which version of Android the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will receive in the second half of this year and therefore doesn't confirm that it will concern an Android 2.1 update.

The info you are referencing comes from a post on Engadget from late last week which was unsubstantiated rumor from a "trusted" but un-named source who was wrong on in regards to his claim that 2.1 would bring multi-touch to the X10. I wouldn't put any stock in the rest of his claims.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. This means that we will always have a stable and well known platform. If SE would apply the policy to always updated the phone to the second last version, it would be great. But my fear is that, as usual with SE, we will not get too many updates, maybe only one major update and then a minor bug fixing update. Then the phone will be "abandonware"... like the Xperia X1.

perhaps not so much a problem with the X10 - being Android based it will be easier for them to upgrade the base OS.. unless they have a complete change of direction with their own overlay... (which wouldn't surprise me!)

Come on, it was not so difficult to upgrade the X1 from Windows Mobile 6.1 to 6.5, and all the buyers would have been happy. This way, SE has just collected a lot of unhappy or angry customers. Moreover, this has been always the habit of SE: abandon the development of their phone after the release and leave the customers with bugs and issues. I really hope they've changed they strategy.

To my understanding, most WinMo 6.1 devices weren't upgraded to WinMo 6.5. My iPAQ 910c certainly wasn't.
I'm not confident that the x10 itself will receive an update at all. This is my 3rd Android device and my first SE device.
As a result of all the nonsense surrounding MT and colour support I've lost faith in SE already.
I think there xperia line will have upgraded OS's, but I don't know about the X10.
I've never had this much trouble with HTC devices (but I guess that has been down to this forum).

You are right. However, it is not a good way to keep customers. And SE has already a constantly decrease in market share, and I think that the only way to reverse that trend is to build the reputation of a very high customer satisfaction. For smarphones, this means frequent and effective software updates.
Fair enough.
I just think that if they can take so long, to release their flagship handset in first place, and taking their supposed track record into account. Should we really expect 2.1 at least anytime soon?
After taking all those extra months to get the device ready for consumers, they release a device with a substandard input method, slow camera speed and poor in call volume.
Their famed customizations also have issues. Timescape is slow and on occasion I have to press keys several times for the system to register my input (mediascape).
We should be worrying about stability and and performance updates on 1.6 before we consider 2x.
This phone has so much potential but it still seems like a prototype to me.
yea it desperately needs an update. having said that, even though its running 1.6, it DOES have the latest kernel dosent it?
i'm hoping the fact that it comes with a 2 year warranty instead of the 1 year all other phones come with is an indication that we'll get reasonable updates past a year.
also- SE was the first to acknowledge the existance of 2.2, remember? when some guy mentioned the x10 will get 2.x
A Sony Ericsson rep confirmed to me that it will be a 2.x update in Sept.
She also said that their reasoning behind 1.6 was to ensure network compatibility so it could be sold across all networks, but I'm not sure if that makes much sense.
I am pretty sure that the gyus here at XDA will do something for us if SE will not give the right version in time. I had 6.5 on X1 for more than 9 months without any SE involement

I jsut can't believe that we still need to wait till Q4 while others already running 2.1 for some time already. SE really should speed things up a little bit! In Q4 X10 properly will be an out dated phone....

I thought about that too but I have since found out that the flash plugin could possible be made available as an app from the market.
See here:http://http://androidandme.com/2010/03/news/adobe-details-flash-10-1-installations/
It makes sense as it was originally understood that you needed 2.1 to run flash and not 2.2 (Froyo).
I guess having 2.2 means it's preinstalled.
Time will tell!
I guess that as 2.2 is not fully released yet, it is difficult for SE to say how or if it could be implemented. I've had SE phones for years and they are always very wary about promising things before they know they can deliever.
But I do agree that in this more open and enlightened age, SE need to engage more with their customer base...
I've always had issues with the Linux community releasing far too many releases far too often..
Very true in regards to 2.2 not being available yet. On the positive side of things SE can very well change their minds and go with 2.2 (if available). At this point they can only promise 2.1 although they should bump the timeframe up. Rogers is coming with the Acer liquid e which is preinstalled with 2.1 so SE needs to take that into consideration and bump the date up at least to june/july.

SE could change their minds but I think that if they have announced 2.1 it will be because they are currently working on 2.1.
Just as SE originally announced 1.6 and they delayed and delayed until 2.x was released. The launch was delayed so much that we all thought 2.1 could possibly ship with the x10. However the reason for the delay was down to bugs e.t.c. I guess they expect more of the same with 2.1.
If they were to change their minds and bring 2.2, we'd be waiting until the end of Q1 2011.
I just hope they are planning to support the device beyond the 2.1 OS.
I think they have said that they will continue to provide updates during the phone's lifespan (whatever that is....) But I guess they want to develop against a stable platform and no doubt don't want to develop against 2.2 until all the initial bugs are ironed out....
Hopefully they will speed up their development cycles, 6 months to migrate to a new baseline is far too long for their flagship device.....

No doubt!
They should have make it into 2 releases for 2.1: 2.1 w/ all existing features/SE apps + bug fixes tested by mid year (June-July time frame) and another one with all those nice and new apps + features in Q4. That way we can be on par with the other (newer) Android phones sooner.
They should hire me as their release manager
On the other hand there is no incentive for SE to keep up the pace for X10 when they will announce newer phones later this year/early next year

Well the 2.2 isn't even mentioned, i doubt we will get it in this year.
BTW, great news, so we will get the 2.1 somewhere near september, not bad.
We are of course very glad to offer this upgrade earlier than originally planned. Xperia™ X10’s position will also be further strengthened through the addition of HD video recording as part of the same Q3 upgrade. A further upgrade to the Xperia™ X10 in Q4 will make it possible to connect and display wirelessly content on your television and enhance the Timescape™ and Mediascape applications.

I really wish I could believe them when they say Q3...
The good thing is that we have a fairly functional Donut, we could've been stuck on a stock version and that would've been painful. When you avoid the cool but oh so slow stock apps like Timescape and add some stuff from the market it's a really nice OS.
What would be awesome though was if we could get vanilla images without all the extra stuff bolted on and the ability to customise it fully. But without root that's not gonna happen. :/
Sounds like the root news has scared them abit lol
Nice move SE
That's good to hear. I see where SE is going with this. Previously they planned one big 2.1 update on Q4 but after receiving numerous complaints they divided it into "2 phases" updates in Q3 and Q4. It’s clear from the announcement that the promised DLNA support along with other features will be postponed until phase 2 on Q4.

Wouldnt that be a little info?
At least it sounds like they're starting to listen to their customers "a little".
To survive on the market they have to provide smaller, faster update cycles. It's the new model to stay competitive. Releasing monolithic updates that take forever just doesn't work anymore because there are so many other alternatives available and people don't have to wait. They'll just move on and then all the work put into the update is wasted because no one is using your product.
So fingers crossed.

That's not how SE thinks and works. A more obvious explanation would be the Release of the X8 , so they try to push the Phone ASAP to the market and as both Phones, with slightly differences , have the same Specs they try to get the X8 on the market WITH Android 2.1 , so they have to hurry up and as they do 2.1 for the X8 they spend the update to the X10 a bit earlier. SE learned how the market reacted to their release of the X10 with Android 1.6 and I'm almost sure they won't do the same mistake with the X8.
SE is pushing new Models to the market very quick and they want to sell them all. When we get 2.1 we can be happy because i don't see a further Release of 2.2 or higher for the X10 , this will be exclusive for their new Flagships.
All android phones shall be getting updates.
The only way flagships shall differ will be through hardware.

It has already been stated numerous times that the X10 will not have an official release based on another OS than 2.1 ... What is the point of such a poll?
really....they also announced about no multi touch too
and if you see the hardware,it is capable of all OS...there are many videos showing with 2.3
for multitouch there was an official announcement explaining they found a way to enable it and it will be added in a future release against what they previously announced
I am well aware of what the hardware is capable of and I am absolutely certain that devs here will make a 2.3 build for the X10.
The key word though is Sony Ericsson. They have never had a plan to bring the X10 to a higher android release than 2.1 as new handsets are due for release in the next month and they will run 2.3 to show the public they are to replace the current handsets. It would make no sense commercially for SE to update its old handsets when new ones are available

There was an official announcement that the X10 didn't have the hardware support for multitouch(counting from dualtouch)...but any capacitive screen can do that, then they suddently said that they found a way to make it work...everyone knows that the dualtouch being used in our x10s is the same that appears on nexus one and HTC desire so they didn't discover anything, they just didn't wanted to work on it when they said that, so they "LIED" when they said their first statement.
Talking about android OS support, i haven't read anything related to "which OS will be the last one" from SE. Remember that some said that there will not be any updates for the X10 in 2011 according to that famous document showing future updates and we know now that it is not true.
Anyway i'm not saying that we will have 2.2, 2.3 o 100.1, i'm just saying that people on SE change their minds a lot
thati right.
Ok firstly i think it will be 2.2
secondly SE have never said they wont update higher than 2.1, they just havent confirmed that they are yet. the roadmap didn't state any higher than 2.1 but the roadmap didn't state end of support.
now sonyericsson have stated that they will suport phone for two years after release and the x10 was Released 2010, March this means they dont stop with software support until march 2012. so it highly likely well get 2.2
I think that we will at least get 2.2 before end of life, although, I'm sure that it'll run honeycomb just fine. I'm hoping for at least 2.3.

spot on there PiLoT. The roadmap was a 2010 roadmap, it showed nothing for 2011 or further because it was a 2010 ROADMAP! All people seem to remember was that it showed nothing higher than 2.1 by the end of 2010, and guess what...that is where we are at right now - bang on schedule!
i would think 2.3 if anything, and have voted as such
I hope we all get what we want...... Me I want 2.3 or some clever man from here to get a solid 2.2
Sent from my X10i using XDA App on the bog
Actually, the X10 would run super well with 2.2 especially with the increase in performance of 2.2. I would certainly hope the X10 would get AT LEAST 2.2. Getting 2.3 would be even sweeter but at least 2.2.
It's capable of running froyo and it would be a waste of a good phone without it since it is proven that 2.2 increases performance by a lot. So hopefully, SE, you can fulfill that.
I personally believe that the X10 will never be updated beyond 2.1. Yes, we will get multitouch but why would they give their old phones the same software as all the new ones that will be announced in february? All they want to do is sell as many new phones (the most expensive one they make) as possible. So for now they will keep feeding us info on all the marvelous things the X10 will still get to boost the current X10 sales and from the moment the new models come out they will just dump the X10 because they have a new flagship with 2.3 installed out of the box.
I can be wrong but I'm afraid this is what is going to happen.
Hi,
I voted (wishfull thinking) 2.3...

I think opposite regarding what it means to have commercial sense. If I believe that SE will support my investment for a period of 2 years, keeping the product up to date, I will be more willing and confident to buy again SE products. In a competitive market sticking passionate consumers to our brand is a key factor to prosper.
New products should get their share through new hw features explored by new sw apps rather than the supporting OS.

Alex
My skeptic side says that we'll only see 2.2.
But with news of the X10 mini successor running snapdragon and 2.3, it looks as if they would be able to get 2.3 running on our current x10 without too much extra effort.
And like what everyone else has said here, nearly all of the prototypes have been running 2.3. It appears that they're skipping 2.2; why bother getting it to run when it may be simpler to port it from the next x10 mini to the current x10?
I'm quite sure that X10 will remain a 2.1 device.
We will get a couple of updates (the promised dual touch and UXP update), maybe even some bug fix (but not the in-call volume, that's NOT a bug you hearing-impaired pests!), but not a new OS version.
For the morons in the SE board of directors a OS upgrade for a year old device would be just a waste of money.
not trying to be pesimistic but i don't see any update further than 2.2
Hi all, probably a stupid remark here pardon for am just a junior, just couldn't help my self, rather than just hoping, any way we could probably push SE on a clash action against them to update this lovely phone. any body a lawyer here. just to explore tho possibility, cause they promised a support at least patches along the life of the handset, and there are bugs on 2.1 that is pathed on 2.2, and this is minor revision, and another in 2.3 also minor. later on 3.0 that is Major.........
well just an Idea........
Sorry For the Bad english
next firmware will be harder to root
SE can't expect anyone who has the X10's to go out and purchase another phone, 1 year after the run around they have put us through unless they offer a trade-up program for those of us who actually paid money for these phones.
SE believes that it is offering the most stable firmwares of it's competitors and that this caution on it's part to make certain the 'experience' is better for the customers. While bugs do get through or some things get overlooked, SE has historically fixed many bugs in their firmware in the past (save the P1). The call volume will never be fully corrected in the phone, and the inability to use the phone in loud environments is because there's no noise canceling hardware.
UXP going lite? Well, it's SE's defining application and they released the SDK for the vortex et al. Lite I'll believe when I see it. You can tell it not to update automatically in the background and the widget can be removed from the Home screen. This app and the rounded cases with the hardware buttons is the internal 'style' of the phone. And if Timescape worked better and integrated with Twitter better, it is sort of neat. It's surprising that a company that has a much java experience as SE didn't see the performance issues.
SE claims to have submitted many fixes to Android (90?) and had about half of them accepted. There's some video from one of the developers at developerworld (I think) that says this.
Before I got my x10 I was certain that when the x12 or whatever it's called is released, the x10 would be updated to the same firmware level, and that would be the last update for the current generation (unless there were serious bugs that did not require a newer version of Android to correct). Today, I could toss a coin since I think SE's choice to NOT put a full 512mb ROM in this phone was as much about not expecting it to be upgradable as saving a few cents per unit.
Whatever happens, this is what I 'think' will happen.
1. No improvement in the screen colors. It's such a easy way to get better performance, not increasing the screen colors.
2. Any new firmware they release will have the standard Android rooting hacks blocked. SE really doesn't want you screwing with the phone, and carriers don't want you taking their apps off, even if you don't use them. Google's comments on 'wishing the phones were more open' came right about the time the little update to 2.1 was released that now with the still uncracked bootloader, makes SE the 'most secure' phone. This could be a selling point with all carriers.
3. AT&T may not ever release another approved version of firmware. This phone is not important to them, they've been trying to give them away 2 for 1, yet they have yet to offer a discount or sale on Captivates which outsell X10's by many multiples. Even SonyStyle was offering the phone for free with a new contract as if they were Amazon or BestBuy.
It may be best to move to a generic version to that if SE continues to release fixes or updates, it's available to you without the carrier's approval.

a new OS update just in 3 months is stupid!

We all know that we got our 2.1 update in end of 2010,around november and now its just 3 months and we are asking for 2.2 but wait in another 2 months we will ask for 2.3 ,I dont wana sound pro SE but its difficult for any company to provide a OS update in 3 months, I guess SE should work out and may be take some more time and give 2.3 instead of 2.2 now becuase i am 100% sure even if they give 2.2 it wont be a month that each of us will ask for 2.3 and i guess even SE knows this.
So
They wont update to 2.2 coz a OS update came just 3 months back
even giving 2.2 update wont make people shut up coz then we will shout for 2.3
they cant give 2.3 coz they are giving 2.3 with ARC and they dont want x10 to compete with ARC
Also if u guys check out bootloader cracking thread there is hardly any hopes of cracking bootloader coz SE had made sure that this time they encrypt it so that NO ONE can break into.
The ones who want the updates have the updates with their custom ROMs.
The most people know there won't be updates and use the custom ROMs or are happy with their modded 2.1 ROM (like me).
SE have their new phones with new firmwares to be working on. As far as se are concerned x10 is in their history.
Im more than happy with custom 2.2 rom. The devs here have done amazing work considering no open bootloader.

I think it would be better if devs try to develop 2.1 and make it as par with 2.2/2.3 becuase we all know what 2.2 and 2.3 lacks..!!!

No. It's that 2.2 is a significant update. Want the latest version of gmail? Exchange? Essential bug fixes? Flash (even though I don't particularly care for that one)? You better get 2.2.
The problem is that (weee, timeline time):
Android 2.1 came out around Jan/Feb of 2010.
The X10 was released in March of 2010
X10 competitors were releasing 2.1 phones.
Android 2.2 was released in May of 2010
Competitors release phones with 2.2.
SE promised 2.1 by the end of September.
SE promised 2.1 by the beginning of November.
SE updates the X10 to 2.1 for most by mid-November.
-Unless if you're on AT&T USA. I think they're still waiting for an official 2.1.
Android 2.3 was released in Dec of 2010.
SE states in January that 2.2 won't be coming to the X10 because they took too long with 2.1.
I don't understand the point of this thread... It's not "stupid" to release a new OS in 3 months when the previous OS was long in tooth by 6 months. But it DOESN'T matter. They've stated that 2.2 IS NOT COMING.
android represents something fresh and very advanced compared with previous smartphone's Os. This is why it need a lot of fixes in its earlier time. Problem with SE is another and well known since they had modded something that wouldn't need it to then got tramped by themselves when they find out that Android it wasn't just another symbian. Actually android was developed with freedom in mind so every user should be capable of upgrading its device's software just like we actually do on our PCs. But SE has blocked such function locking the booloader just like if MS get to your home to lock your adm PC saving its keyword for its dirty lucrative purposes forcing you to buy another machine to stay update with software and security. I think this is next to be an illegal procedure and Geohot is demonstrating it right now.
