HD2 on Verizon? - HD2 General

I'm just curious if there's anyone out there with an HD2 on Verizon? If not, is it possible to do it? The HD2 is a quad band device, so doesn't it have the hardware capable to be on a CDMA network? I was thinking that if I bought an unlocked HD2, I would be able to put it on my account with Verizon. I guess I would have to be running a different radio in order to do that though.
Anyone have any thoughts, comments, suggestions? I really want one of these phones, but I can't switch from Verizon because no other provider gives me 3g in my area. Plus, my Touch Pro 2 is getting dated compared to that 1gz Snapdragon!

HD2 is a GSM phone. Pretty sure it can't be made to work on a CDMA network.

Technology
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
WCDMA/HSPA: 1700 MHz (AWS) / 2100 MHz
Taken from the HD2 tech specs on HTC's website.
If it has a CDMA radio, why couldn't it work if it were unlocked?

Does Verizon have a sim card to put in the phone? If not, how can they make it work on their network.

Verizon does have sim cards, they use them in the Blackberry Storm, which is both GSM/CDMA ...
But It may be like the storm if it is activated via the IMEI that it may not require a sim card ...

rly? i never thought verizon would use sim cards...can we bring non verizon phones them from lets say ATT to their network?

Verizon has SIM cards for their GSM/CDMA world phones. Sprint also has world edition blackberries with a SIM card. The SIM card is there so the phone is able to roam onto a GSM network outside of the USA. As far as I know this SIM card will not allow it to roam onto a USA GSM network, since there are no roaming agreements in place between VZ and ATT/TMO
The WCDMA on the HD2 is not the same as CDMA that VZ/Sprint use.
WCDMA is the 3G standard that GSM providers use. CDMA is well as far as i know the same old CDMA network that VZ/Sprint have used for ages with whatever "bolt on" enables 3G on their network. I dont follow the CDMA standard so i dont know all the specifics about the tech.
Edit:
I just did a small amount of wikipedia research. What Verizon/Sprint use is CDMA2000/EV-DO
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CDMA2000
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution-Data_Optimized
This is not compatible with WCDMA,
Even though they both use "CDMA" family of technology http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_division_multiple_access
WCDMA is a wideband version http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WCDMA

Thanks for the replies guys. This is a bummer though. I was really hoping to be able to get an HD2 to use with Verizon. Oh well, guess I'll wait for the Droid X to release, even though I'd like to stick with WiMo.

euro hero on telus problem!

so, i tried my mothers rogers sim card and my EURO hero works fine. I could not get my newly activated telus sim card to work in my hero though, it has the right bands, there site says it should work too!
does anyone else have a euro hero on telus?
how did you get it working!?
I appreciate any and all help! thank you!
ps i had a rooted hero with modaco 2.9 and my own theme.. but i thought updating to the latest ruu from htc would fix it but apparently it didnt!
also when i go into menu - settings-wireless controls-mobile network settings-network operators-search networks... i only get rogers wireless and no telus.. so i went driving (passsenger seat lol) to see if i just wasnt getting reception... but no matter where i went i did not get service...
also i called telus and they said there network is fine and that my sim card is activated..
my phone has popped up a few times "telus : temp. me error" or something like that too
urghh, i bought an unlocked phone... but i never tried a sim card till after i updated to the newest ruu from htc... maybe its not totally unlocked?
although it works on rogers! but arnt they roaming partners? maybe thats why it works on rogers?
idk im pretty sure bell has the new network too, and they dont show up on my phone either:\
please helpp!
k now i have used flash rec to get the recovery image, installed t-mobile image because the telus check to see if my phone will work said it was from there even though it was "unbranded and unlocked" but when i pop my telus sim there is nothing saying that the network is locked or anything :s
urgh i will try a replacement sim tomorrow hopefully!
still would appreciate any info anyone has!
Does anyone have the europen hero on TELUS or bell?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but unfortunately the Euro HTC Hero will not work on Telus or Bell. Telus and Bell's new HSPA networks only work with phones that can support HSPA 850/1900. The North American HTC Hero (sold by Telus) has these bands. The Euro HTC Hero only supports HSPA 900/2100 (i.e. any 3G networks outside of North America). The reason you can see Rogers is because Rogers has GSM support (the Euro HTC Hero can only work on GSM networks in Canada - Rogers or Fido only).
I wish I had better news, but I'm afraid you'll need to purchase a North American HTC Hero (if you wish to use Bell or Telus' HSPA network), or alternatively, another cell phone that supports HSPA 850/1900.
but i read from htc site
HSPA/WCDMA:
*
900/2100 MHz
*
Up to 2 Mbps up-link and 7.2 Mbps down-link speeds
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE:
*
850/900/1800/1900 MHz
and telus site
Runs on 1900/850 MHz frequency bands and uses standard 3GPP SIM cards
so techinically i just cant get 3g, but i cant even get voice/text working
and im on pay as you go anyways
wait so your saying telus doesnt have anything but hspa and 3g going to their sim cards?
there website even says my phone is compatible! (after referencing my imei!)
it has to woork! i dont wanna use rogers.. even though thats who i originally planned on using before knowing telus was getting this network
It wont work.
timmacnaughton is right.
The euro Hero only has 2100 HSPA bands, which are not used in North America, Bellus uses 850/1900 (same as Rogers) for the HSPA network, however, the reason your phone is working on Rogers is because its on Edge (2G). Bellus doesnt have 2G to fallback on, only a 3G network.
2G bands are considered world frequencies, anywhere you go, if the carrier is GSM your phone will work with 2G, they use different bands but GSM phone are all quad-band 2G ready
So in all in all.. the european Hero will work on Rogers but Edge only and wont work at all on Bellus (Bell & Telus)
The best way to know if another device will work on Bellus, if you come from Rogers is just to see if you can use 3G on it. If your device cannot use 3G on Rogers, it wont work on Bellus.
ohh thats wierd, i thought telus was doing this because of the olympics, and if most people work on 2100, then they wont be able to use telus in which case they wont get the traffic from the olypmics :s
Lol, no.
Roaming contracts have been signed and delt with for a long time. Besides, Bellus's network cant even be used by a euro phone so yeah.
Anything that is roaming GSM will be on Rogers. even US phones, AT&T has a contract with Rogers for roaming.. in fact every GSM carrier has a contract with Rogers, they own roaming in canada for GSM. bling bling?!

Phones that work with CDMA and GSM

Here's the deal. I'm spending the next 12 months in Canada. I want to buy a phone on the marketplace here and use it this year on a month to month deal with Canadian service. They are mostly GSM on the same bands as AT&T. When I return to the US next year I want to be able to use the same phone on sprint. How do I identify phones that work?
They will say "World Phone" or under the specs you will see GSM bands and CDMA bands. were on most CDMA phone you see "CDMA EVDO Rev A xx/xx/xxx/xxx/" only.
EDIT: You were faster typing eck0728
They are called world phones.
As far as I know Verizon and Sprint have HTC devices that has both, CDMA and a SIM card slot for GSM.
Check your preferred models.
What bands do AT&T/Canadian carriers phones use for full 3g?
Thanks gentleman.

Samsung Epic 4G

Hi Guys, dose anyone have any idea if the samsung Epic 4G for sprint supports GSM networks??
as I know it's 4G phone for sprint, works on Wimax networks, and I heard that it's GSM capable as well, is that true?
Thx
I hope that's true... but I think It hasn't a sim slot
Isn't sprint a cdma Telco? Otherwise you'll be hearing ppl like me buying the epic and using it I'm aus. I would love a gsm sgs with kb
Sent from my Apple Newton 2100
I'm pretty sure it's not. Sprint are CDMA (and their "4G" is WiMax). Their phones do not normally have any GSM capabilities.
Epic 4G General Forum
No, it does not have GSM. It's CDMA only and specifically (at least currently) U.S. only.

Actually, the Epic 4G is CDMA/WCDMA capable. WCDMA being a hybrid of different GSM technologies. If you go into the Phone Info Test Mode (*#4636*1111#) > Phone Information, you can see how to change how the phone's radio interacts with different cell towers in the area. While in the US, there's no point in having WCDMA on because there are no WCDMA service providers here. However, when you go overseas... well, you get the picture.
The only reason this phone really isn't strictly GSM capable is because the radio isn't compatible, and there's no room for a SIM card to contain GSM network subscriber data.
"W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access), UMTS-FDD, UTRA-FDD, or IMT-2000 CDMA Direct Spread is an air interface standard found in 3G mobile telecommunications networks. It is the basis of Japan's NTT DoCoMo's FOMA service and the most-commonly used member of the UMTS family and sometimes used as a synonym for UMTS.[1] It utilizes the DS-CDMA channel access method and the FDD duplexing method to achieve higher speeds and support more users compared to most time division multiple access (TDMA) schemes used today.
While not an evolutionary upgrade on the airside, it uses the same core network as the 2G GSM networks deployed worldwide, allowing dual-mode operation along with GSM/EDGE; a feat it shares with other members of the UMTS family."

Droid 2 Global on GSM

Hey guys, I saw this Global edition is coming out, anyone know if it would work straight up on a GSM network? I'm on Rogers in Canada, same netwrok as AT&T and unfortunately GSM android phone selection blows and I've wanted a Droid for ever. Does the Global have a SIM card slot, would it work as a GSM phone or is it strictly designed to work on CDMA and work on GSM from time to time?
Please for the love of god someone tell me it will work as a normal GSM phone, I want a good android phone
Well here in america I know they have the black berrys such as the storm 1 that are gsm and also have verizon "sim cards" in them (yeah, weird I know..) so I want to assume that the phone will be coming with a sim card slot somewhere but honestly I haven't heard much either about the droid 2 we..when I first saw it I had no idea what a "we" droid 2 was lol...neither did google ...hahah

Hahaha thanks man, I'm going to wait till thing gets pushed out finally hopefully someone will tear it apart.
But if anyone else knows anything else please chime in. This could be sweet if it works
Like the global phones of yesteryear (Blackberry devices, a few Windows mobile ones and some feature phones), they come with a VodaFone SIM for use with global roaming. It is SIM-locked (subsidy locked) however and you'll need to unlock it. Verizon routinely does this for regular customers on contract but if you buy the Pro or D2 Global unsubsidized they generally won't and you'll have to unlock it via a third party.
Once it's unlocked: It's tri-band UMTS. I'm not an expert on UMTS frequencies around the globe. I know it'll work in a couple hundred countries outside North America but I have no idea if it'll work at 3G speeds on US or Canadian GSM networks. It'll definitely work for phone calls and 2G data on AT&T, T-Mobile, Rogers, etc since it's quad-band GSM - this is how the global BlackBerry devices work. My old Storm 1 is still in use by someone on AT&T and I intend to sell my current unlocked Storm 2 when I finally break down and pick up one of the new global Droids.
Just got a Droid 2 Global. It has a VZW/Vodafone sim in it, no idea if it's SIM Locked(I'm sure it is). Once you get it unlocked, it shouldent be hard to get working with a rogers sim.
http://www.verizonwireless.com/droid-2-global-motorola-nbsp.shtml
states:
# All–Digital, 800/1900, CDMA EVDO rev A
# Quad Band GSM – 850/900/1800/1900MHz
# Tri–Band UMTS/HSPA – 850 /1900/2100MHz
So according to this, if its unlocked, it should work for Rogers or AT&T 3G
Any ideas on how to get it unlocked ?
i'm sure a third party company can unlock it like how the storm 1s were unlocked, just have to wait and see since it was barely released from vzw.
I got my D2 Global SIM unlocked yesterday. Called VZW Global Support (1-800-711-8300) and they gave me the code (once you put in a non-VZW SIM, it will automatically ask you for the code.) As long as your line has been active for at least 6 months with no late payments, they will hook you up.
HOWEVER, it appears there may be more to the unlocking process. When I did a GSM network scan, no networks showed up. Others on various forums have been reporting the same issue in the last day or so. Normally when you put in a SIM into an unlocked GSM phone, you will see the roaming network options.
It's possible that they have blocked US GSM networks and foreign networks will work fine, but I'm hoping others can shed some light on the issue.

Not quite. If you look at the D2G user guide on the Motorola website, it says on page 12: "DROID2 Global by Motorola switches effortlessly between CDMA, GSM 900, GSM 1800, and UMTS 2100 networks, so you can make calls in over 200 countries worldwide."
So it seems that VZW has restricted use of the 850/1900 MHz GSM/UMTS bands, even though the device has the hardware to support them. Most foreign networks use 900/1800 GSM and 2100 UMTS but AT&T/T-Mobile use 850/1900, which is why no one has had any success with them yet.
Hopefully someone can figure out a workaround.
Yes - hopefully someone can find a workaround for this. The same is true for the Droid Pro in that even once the phone is unlocked it will not work on ATT networks.

Technical Questions

1. Why does CDMA 3g max out around 2.2 Mb/s while GSM 3g can be so much more?
4.4 Mb/s on VZW's strong CDMA network would be the greatest thing since sliced bread.
I have a Dinc2 that has an unlocked SIM. I can only get Edge/2G while in Canada using a local SIM card. I have set up the APNs.
2. Is this limitation in my phone, or do they have some sort of agreement with VZW to throttle my speeds in North America?
3. What is the max GSM data speeds a VZW world phone can achieve while using the GSM capabilities? I have droped a T-mob sim in here before, but have been limited again to EDGE/2g.
Thank you!
Most GSM bands worldwide are 850/1900 (like AT&T). It's possible that you were on a Canadian provider that utilized AWS bands (1700/2100 like T-Mobile). I doubt your phone is pentaband, which would enable you to use it on any GSM network and get 3G. I highly doubt Verizon would try to throttle you outside their network while on a foreign SIM.
As for speeds, CDMA doesn't have the speed that UMTS/HSDPA does. I'm not entirely sure why. I can get up to 5Mbps on an UMTS network. I'm not as familiar with Verizon's CDMA network. I've only experienced their LTE (which is smoking fast )
Wasn't me!! I didn't do it!
