[How To] Root

TGA_Gunnman created a one click root that new users will want to use, said thread is a sticky in Captivate Development. If you still want to use the old method (and install ADB) please use this one.
I followed my own guide! This works perfectly if you read everything and follow the instructions.
Also: once you are rooted, be EXTREMELY careful! Half of the new threads are people who have screwed up their phones by deleting this or corrupting that. Please, for the sanity of all of the devs and Android veterans, make backups and just be all around careful. Almost all problems that anyone has had are repareable AND PREVENTABLE with a little reading and care. Just to clarify, rooting does not automatically enable sideloading. Please follow http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=738376 to enable sideloading.
Follow these steps exactly and there will be no risk of bricking your Captivate, the worst that may happen is the phone rejecting the update.zip.
HOWEVER:
I take no responsibility if ANYTHING at all happens to your device that you don't like. Don't come crying to me if your brand new phone breaks in any way. Your warranty is also void, but you could have figured that out for yourself.
Now that that's over with, lets get to the fun bit. If you are on Windows, you can follow this procedure, or for TGA_Gunnman's one click root program (only on Windows), you can go ahead and skip to the bottom.
1) You may need Samsung drivers if you are on a PC, which you can learn about here: ADB Drivers at the Unlockr
For 64 bit Windows, you'll need these drivers: http://zedomax.com/blog/2010/07/14/s...iver-download/
Don't proceed until your phone is fully installed on Windows with the drivers!
2) Download the attached zip (at the bottom of the post) and rename it to update or update.zip if you are on a Mac. (If you are on a Mac, DO NOT USE SAFARI to download the file, it automatically unzips any zip file. Use Google Chrome or firefox instead.) Scroll down the notification bar and click "mount" to allow your computer to read the internal memory. Put the file on the INTERNAL SD card of the Captivate, which won't be tough to figure out if you don't have an SD card in the phone.
3) EDIT--There is an easier way to get to recovery, but do this step anyway. Turn the phone off, then hold power, volume up and volume down. If you still want the android SDK (which will be very useful throughout your rooted experiences) follow the old procedure:
This step requires the Android SDK, and Android Debugging enabled. You can get the SDK here: Android SDK. Just download the zip, extract it to something like C:\Android. You won't need the Java dev pack or anything.
You can enable Android Debugging like this: From the homescreen, press Menu, then click Settings. Navigate to Applications>Development and check USB Debugging. Now, hook the phone to the computer. Next,
On a PC, click start>run>"cmd" (in the text box) or on a Mac, spotlight "Terminal". Linux users, you know what to do.
The command you will use is in the tools folder of wherever you extracted it to (IE: C:\android\tools), so be sure your working directory of command prompt is in that tools location!
Finally, type:

4) Once the phone is booted into recovery, use the volume keys on the phone to scroll to "Reinstall packages." Use power to select what you have highlighted.
5) Give yourself a pat on the back. You are now rooted. You should see a Superuser application now.

Can we please have more detailed instructions? I don't understand the part where it says "type in the terminal"
I am very new to android as this will be my first Android phone.
Also, after rooting will we be able to install 3rd party applications? Or do we have to do anything else to bypass ATT's restrictions?

adb terminal is software you need to install on your PC , will probably need samsung drivers also , guide is indeed not noob friendly. This will help you get needed bits including ADB
Probably None of us have captivate , so writing a guide is a bit troublesome

Actually, you'd have to install a custom ROM for that. MoDaCo should be coming out with them pretty soon, and so will XDA. It won't be too long. BTW, once you have ADB installed on your computer, you can sideload apps all you want. The command is

If you cant get it to work on windows, try a ubuntu live cd. All you need to do is go to ubuntu and burn a disc and reboot.

Are there no Windows 64 bit drivers?

Edit 2- Just did the root. Seems to have worked (no errors) but how do I know if it did? How do I delete say, ATT Maps?

if you are in the directory above yes. the ./ just saves you from writing out the full path
lets say adb is in "/home/user/Downloads/sdk/tools"
you could type out "/home/user/Downloads/sdk/tools/adb command" regardless of where your terminal window was focused
or if you were currently in the directory "/home/user/Downloads/sdk/tools"
you could use the shortcut "./adb command"

OP I'd change your post based on my experiences... Here's a little more detail and I've rearranged it (you need the drivers before running these commands, for example).

Thank you to LeshaK, Justadude, and chaoscentral. Once again, I didn't discover how to root, that credit goes to LeshaK, bringing it over to the USA was Justadude's doing, and chaoscentral edited the file for use on our Captivates.

Ubuntu 10.04 - adb
Any step by step instructions just to get adb running enough on 10.04 to root and side load software? I'm getting command not found when I try to run adb, even after downloading packages.

Thanks for your helpful answer. As I'm getting my Cativate tomorrow, can you please just answer yes or no to each of my questions as follow ?
After Rooting will I be able to:
1- download any 3rd party Android application?
2- install any "Samsung Galaxy S" ROM on my Captivate?
3- Recieve any "OTA" update as a "Galaxy S" phone?

1. No. You will have to use adb or the database modification method (which having root access makes possible). Both are described in detail elsewhere in this forum.
2. Rooting means simply getting superuser permissions. Loading a ROM has to do with the bootloader and recovery partition. Unmodded Galaxy S ROMs probably will not work on the Captivate, but be patient.
3. Not sure what you're asking. You will still get any Captivate OTA updates as if you hadn't rooted, but you won't get, for example, the rumored Korean FroYo Galaxy S update OTA when it drops. You'd have to wait for the Captivate OTA FroYo upgrade (or there may be a ROM or patch you can flash by then).
Rooting is basically just allowing programs to run as the superuser account. Many programs like Metamorph, some screenshot apps and some wifi tethering apps require more permission than Android normally gives an app.

Thanks alot for taking all this time & energy to reply to me! WOW, it seems like everytime I wanna step up one, I go back 10 steps. All I need is to use my Captivate for installing a Stock Rom of "Galaxy S" & be able to get rid of any "AT&T" restrictions for anything on this phone, what should I do please?

The ATT stuff doesn't actually run so they aren't a big deal at this point. I also don't see Amazon MP3 background stuff like some Android devices have, so... There's really not a huge case for rooting yet.
That said, when Custom ROMs for this come out I'll still be getting one.

For those of you having a hard time installing ADB Shell, try this video. It worked for me.

I've just installed this and very impressed with it - forum.xda-developers.com, phonebook, messaging ect all remains black.

You can modify the bar so it's black, I've also just done that, but not sure how you would hide it completely.

But that is only for rooted ones, isn't it?

Ugh, more framework-res files. Its the same file with the notification bar files. The problem is I dont have ADB but my phone is rooted. Can I get that on my phone somehow?

Adb doesn't go on your phone. It goes on your PC. You use your PC to move framework files to your phone.

Once it cant find them select "Install drivers from my pc"
The drivers you need are in the Android SDK 1.5r2 folder (C:\android-sdk-windows\usb_driver)
Depending on your OS pick x86 or amd64
You ADB Android Device should now be installed! Good Job
For Android SDK 1.5r3+
1. Run SDK Setup.exe
2. If it gives you an error go to settings and click on "Force http//....."
3. Select all options and let it download and install

Check if your phone is detected by ADB
Open up Command Prompt (Go to run, type in cmd, press enter)

Now you are all set to run adb commands
Note: for a list of commands type in 'adb' in cmd
CONGRATS YOU NOW HAVE ADB FULLY RUNNING!

Why: Your computer has detected your phone but as a protable device and as a storage device.
Fix: This took me a lot of research and time to figure out so this is what your are going to do.
First download USBDeview - Here
Unzip it
Run USBDeview.exe as Administrator
You will see all drivers being used on your computer
Highlight and Uninstall all drivers with the description have HTC Android (Should be 3 of them)
Right Click on the driver and press uninstall
Once done, Unplug your phone and plug it back in
You should now get the notification of the ADB device
Follow the steps above to install the drivers
Thats it for ADB! Congrats and if you have any questions please ask me or if anything is missing or not correct please tell me. I got all of this from research and personal experience.

I was weery at first but is a straight forward operation. I also use ADB File Explorer, and had some trouble with that but posted how I got that to work HERE

NVM I used the actual ADB cmd and it worked. However, I am having trouble replacing the Phonebook.apk. I pulled the default Phonebook.apk out and now im stuck. Any help?
Also, does anyone know a framework-res file with a darkish/transparent notification bar?

I just pushed the new one over, however you do need to switch to the default dialler to see the change, and if you have trouble making calls like I did, go into manage applications, and clear the cache and or remove updates from the dialler and phonebook.

Edit your own, I use winrar, but don't close the archive, open it and extract the right file - statusbar_background.png - from drawable-land-240dpi, colour it, copy and paste it back into the winrar archive.

The phone says it is using 70% because the display uses the most energy at that moment. But 70% doesn't mean it is using much battery. It doesn't mean it is draining your battery. It only indicates how much more it uses compared to other things. It's normal and you can't do anything about it.

The problem is even after an hour of Asphalt 5 the display took 62% vs Asphalt which took 22%. However, I understand that all actions on the phone including Asphalt require the display so it will use up alot of energy. Was just hoping there was a way to decrease the battery usage.

Doubt an ebayer has a hacked version of the Sprint app, but he does say that this doesn't void your warranty (unless he thinks that rooting doesn't void warranties.)

Doesn't work on Froyo. My money is on a hacked version of the Sprint app.

Tempting to spend the $5. If it involves root, you can get your money back since it is false advertising.

You will see stuff like this all the time. He isnt selling the software, only instructions on how to do it. I really don't see anything wrong with that. People buy instructions on how to do things all the time. There really isn't anything wrong with that. If someone is too lazy to reseach it and figure it out themselves, oh well. That's the great thing about America. Everyone has a hustle, nobody is forcing anyone to buy it. Maybe it is some college kid scraping to get along, maybe not. Either way, no harm no foul. You don't like it, don't buy it...

Agreed. It's no different than someone accepting payment when someone asks for help on this forum and offers to pay someone via Paypal. I occasionally see threads like that around.

On a more serious note, I am just too curious to find out what he is selling and I think others are also. If I have to pay $5.00 to find out what he is selling, so be it. I spend more than that a day giving to homeless people on the street.

1. Now go back to you internet browser on your phone and pull up google.
2. Type in "android wifi tether" and click search.
3. The first option that comes up after the search called "android wifi tether - Project Hosting..."
4. Select the first option and let it take you to the web site.
5. Now the page will pull up and look for where it says "HTC Evo" under device and just to the right of that
you will see a link that says "download" click download.
6. Now click the link that says "wireless tether for root users 2.0.2.apk.
7. Click on "wireless tether for root users 2.0.2.apk" again.
8. Now click "wireless_tether_2_0_5-pre2.apk" and let it install.
******First set of Instructions******
(1) If you have the original unrevoked root installed, uninstall it by using "Menu," "Settings," "Applications," "Manage Applications" and scrolling to "Unrevoked" at the bottom. Tap it, click "Force Stop" at the bottom and then "Uninstall," "OK" to uninstall it. Then power off/on your phone just to be sure.

If you do this update, it takes up to 10 minutes so be patient and let the phone reboot (a few times) until it is done. Then once the update is done, power off/on one last time to get a clean start.
(3) Set your phone to "Charge Only:" "Menu," "Settings," "Connect to PC," tap "Default connection type" and select "Charge Only."
(4) Enable USB debugging: "Menu," "Settings," "Applications," "Development," and put a check in "USB debugging."
The process: DOWNLOAD THE REFLASH PACKAGE FROM http://unrevoked.com/recovery/ NO MATTER WHAT!
(1) Download the unrevoked3 install package: Go to unrevoked3 recovery reflash tool, v3.0 and click "Download for Windows." Save the "Reflash-bundle.exe" file somewhere that you can find it on your system.
(2) Using Explorer, run the "Reflash-bundle.exe" file you just downloaded. It'll ask where to install it. Don't just accept the default: change the install location to a folder you can remember: it's just going to unzip some files there: it isn't really a software installer.
(3) Once the files have unzipped, go to the folder you chose in the above step. You should find an "hboot driver.htm" file in that folder: double click on that to open the html instructions on how to install the drivers. Follow the instructions in the html file starting with downloading the actual driver files at the very top. When you download those driver files and unzip those, those are the files (the folder) you'll point to in subsequent steps in those instructions. When done with the html instructions, you should have drivers installed and shouldn't have to come back to this step.
(4) At this point, if you needed to install the drivers, you are probably still sitting at a boot menu on your phone. UNPLUG the phone from USB and select "Fastboot" and then "Reboot" to reboot the phone to restart it. Before the next step, your phone should be on and booted up in its normal operating state (not some boot menu).
(5) Now go to the folder where you unzipped the reflash bundle (step 2 above). Just double click the "Reflash.exe" file.
(6) You should get a window with "Unrevoked 3" on it (on the computer of course). Just follow the instructions in smaller font below "Unrevoked 3" to finish rooting. Note that when it says "Waiting for device," it wants you to plug your EVO into the computer via the USB cable. Note that it wants the EVO to be fully booted normally (not in the Hboot or recovery menus). The prompts at this point are very specific so no need to repeat them. If all works as it is supposed to, the only thing you really have to do is scroll to an item on the phone and select it when instructed. The rest is automated and should result in a "Done" message. The whole thing at this point took maybe one minute so it isn't something you have to wait for or stare at for a long time.
*****Second set of Instructions*****
All the instructions I've found for using unrevoked3 to root an Evo on a Windows PC seem to be piecemeal (all over the place and incomplete), so I thought I'd give a rundown of what worked for me. Some of these steps may be unnecessary but doing all of them should result in a "safe" root. This is written for those with little to no knowledge of rooting but with basic Windows/PC skills and knowledge of how to navigate the Evo interface:
Prep
Before beginning the process, I would recommend doing the following to your phone:
(1) If you have the original unrevoked root installed, uninstall it by using "Menu", "Settings", "Applications", "Manage Applications" and scrolling to "Unrevoked" at the bottom. Tap it, click "Force Stop" at the bottom and then "Uninstall", "OK" to uninstall it. Then power off/on your phone just to be sure.

While this may not be necessary, I know that some USB drivers get really mad if you try to access the USB port without admin privileges (sorry, I'm a coder so I run into that stuff and warn you so you don't have to) so I did it as a precaution.
(8) You should get a window with "Unrevoked 3" on it (on the computer of course). Just follow the instructions in smaller font below "Unrevoked 3" to finish rooting. Note that when it says "Waiting for device", it wants you to plug your Evo into the computer via the USB cable. Note that it wants the Evo to be fully booted normally (not in the Hboot or recovery menus). The prompts at this point are very specific so no need to repeat them. If all works as it is supposed to, the only thing you really have to do is scroll to an item on the phone and select it when instructed. The rest is automated and should result in a "Done" message. The whole thing at this point took maybe one minute so it isn't something you have to wait for or stare at for a long time so if something gets "stuck" for a while... there's likely a problem.
(9) Don't forget to turn your anti-virus software back ON.
Now, when I followed these steps on my Win7 x64 system, reflash.exe detected the phone and started working (we're in step 8 here) but about 4 messages into the process I got the "communications lost... try again" message that unrevoked refers to on today's Twitter. Some say that (contrary to step 1) installing HTC sync actually solves the problem. I didn't try that. After about 6 tries on my Win7 system and even pulling some "tricks" to try to pause reflash.exe at certain points, I gave up and simply booted my old XP laptop and repeated the above steps and it worked perfectly the first time. At the point of the failure, you hear the two tone usb-device-disconnected sound followed by a use-device-connected sound about 20 seconds later. Somewhere in between is where the "communications lost" message appears so it looks like some sort of USB ack/nack issue. Hopefully it'll be resolved soon. My best advice if you get that error: try a new machine. The XP machine that worked perfectly for me had never seen any HTC software. Maybe that helped. And maybe after I uninstalled the HTC software on my Win7 x64 system (the one that didn't work) I should have rebooted before continuing: I didn't because it didn't prompt for a restart and I couldn't find anything "HTC" running in task manager.

Alright here is the web site that you need to follow. First of all make sure you have USB DEBUGGING checked on you phone and UNKNOWN SOURCES is checked as well.
To do this go to Settings-->Applications--> check UNKNOWN SOURCES, then right below that click development and check USB DEBUGGING.
Now this is just as important you HAVE to uninstall any program that automatically comes up when you plug in your android phone (HTC Sync, DoubleTwist or any other program). If you do not do this it will not work. Trust me it took me 3 hours to figure this out but once i uninstalled these two programs it worked the first time. So if you follow all of the directions on the web site it will work without a hitch.
Go ahead and go to the web site and read it over one good time without doing anything JUST READ IT! When you do that come back and read the rest.......Go on read it but just read it don't do anything else till you read the rest of this email
You will need to do the steps below to get the app for wireless tether so you can do it before or after you install the directions from the web site above.

Those are the instructions for the actual app that will turn on the tethering.
When you go to the web site above you will need to follow the steps from where it says "instructions"
First download the software fromunrevoked.com for your hero or evo to your computers desktop, then make a new folder on your desktop and put the app that you downloaded from unrevoked.com and put it in there because that is where all of the files will extract too when you run the unrevoked program.
Second you will need to install the drivers, on the web site click on the install drivers hyper link and it will take you to the web site to download the drivers again just make a new folder on your desktop and extract the files into it, it is very simple if you just take it slow and follow the directions.
After you install the drivers you will run the reflash package inside the folder that you made on your desktop when you do that it will extract the files and you will finally run the application on your computer called ReFlash. Try plugging your phone in first and then running the program or vise versa. Let the app do its thing and follow instructions on the programs screen. When it finally says Done your phone will be on a screen that you have never seen before but you will want to click on the first option with the power button that says restart phone. (or whatever the first option is it should say restart). You will see in your apps on your phone a app called superuser permissions. That is what you want to see to know if it worked. Once that is there run the wifi tether app that i showed you how to install earlier.
The web site above has some very good help forums but to be honest this is very simple to do just take your time and if you have any computer skills at all and can follow instructions you can do this.

So, since it is root instructions, is he selling a method that would void the warranty?

Invalid Key when rooting

is anyone else having this issue? we're typing in the serial # and beta key perfectly. we're not mistaking O's for 0's; 1's for I's, or anything. we are indeed choosing Windows and HTC Evo 4G on the website. we're doing everything absolutely perfect but it's still giving us an invalid beta key.
we're on hardware version 4.

learn how to copy and paste into command prompt.

we're doing that, still no go. absolutely nothing is working.

Double check the S/N that reports when you start the tool, just to make sure you are entering the same alpha/numeric the phone reports to the program. Use that S/N to generate your key.
I've been rooting phones all morning, hardware 003 and 004 with no problems at all.

Same here, I've done 3 today, with not a single problem to report.

I dont know how comfortable you are with CMD but, What I did was use CMD prompt navigate to the folder and .exe for the revolutionary tool. Put in the command copy and then pasted it from the website. I put my folder on the desktop

CD users\whatever your name is here\desktop\what ever the folder name is
then revolutionary.exe
it launched found the phone and i pasted in what was needed by mouse and pressed enter and then the magic happened. Mileage may vary happy rooting

I had the same problem. You have to use the same key as provided with the download u can't download the program and go back for the key

I had this same problem, everything going smooth until running the revolutionary.exe and pasting the Beta key. Seems when you go to the revolutionary site for the key, the file that gets downloaded is attached to the key, so go ahead and unzip the file to your c: location again and when it asks, just copy and replace all the files and go through the steps and it should accept the Beta key this time and finish, it did for me. I hope this helps.

That has to be the problem that I was having along with most of everything getting the error.
They/I was using version 3 revolutionary with the Key gen that's basically set for version 4.
No way for a old version to confirm key gen that isn't built in that tool.

This is the solution!

THANKYOU!!! That's what I needed to do as I was using the revolution.exe from the zip I got from the larger zip from the root instructions. Once I used the v4 from the revolution site it worked like a charm! yea!

Another fix would be to try it on another computer. I was having the same issue on my Ubuntu laptop so I tried it on my Ubuntu desktop and it fire right on up. Hope this does help some that are still having problems. It work so don't give up and its really worth it .

When you generate your beta key it is imperative that u generate it from the same revolutionary zip you downloaded, the reason people get invalid key is 99.9% because it wasnt generated from the same revolutionary file downloaded,
2nd important its alot easier to copy the beta key in the box and paste to command prompt.
Do this by highlight, key in box , copy it, then open revolutionary.exe.
When the cmd prompt opens take your cursor to the top corner of cmd box and right click go to edit then paste, this is because the beta key is easily fudged up and case sensitive.
Remember to have the fast boot unchecked, usb debug on, and charge only on. And have the modified drivers installed
if fails re download the revolutionary for windows or mac or whatever comp your on and regenerate the key from that specific download and open the exe. From that one, and erase all others. You will get zerging root
then when done choose recovery in hboot then youll get a blue cwm screen choose install zip fine the su-2.3.6.3-ef gh signed.zip that should be on the root of your sd card, and install, that pushes the actual superuser to your device
now your rooted fully with cwm

I am trying to root a friends EVO, and it is not working for me either. I have tried everything listed here and still get invalid key.
Fastboot unchecked, Debugging on, New HTC driver as listed installed, Antivirus turned off, Phone on Charge only.

EDIT: EVerything is fine, I finally read and comprehended that I was supposed to use the SERIAL# showing on the Revolutionary screen to enter in to generate the key. Once I was smart enough to figure that out, DONE!! Phone rooted and flashing AMONRA as I type. HOOAH!!

You have to put your s/n not anyone's else, make sure your not confusing o with 0. Capitals matter, I just rooted and it works.

Rooting the SCH i400 - Step by Step Instructions for Newbies

I just managed to root my SCH i400 (first ever rooting of any Android device for me).
I am very surprised by how smoothly it went, despite reports & warnings everywhere about complications (like this one - which should be totally ignored if you're using SuperOneClick v2.1.1 or higher).
For the benefit of n00bs like me who may be confused by multiple sources, resources, versions and problem reports, I am posting a step by step procedure that is confirmed (by me, on Windows XP SP3) to be working smoothly, without a single hitch of complications:
Phone: Make sure setting > applications > unknown sources is checked.
Phone: Make sure phone is in debugging mode.
Phone: Make sure SD card is unmounted!
PC: Make sure Windows USB driver for this phone installed and works
PC: Make sure .NET 3.51 SP1 is installed.
PC: Unzip SuperOneClickv2.1.1-ShortFuse.zip ==> C:\Program Files\SuperOneClickv2.1.1-ShortFuse
PC: Double-click SuperOneClick.exe
PC (in SuperOneClick): Make sure you're on the Universal tab (the only other tab is Samsung Captivate, which isn't the i400).
PC (in SuperOneClick): Now click the root button and wait for the process to complete.
PC (in SuperOneClick): "BusyBox not found. Would you like to install it?" Yes!
PC (in SuperOneClick): "Root install has completed! Would you like to run a test?" Yes!
PC (in SuperOneClick): "Your device has been rooted! Would you like to donate now?"
Exit SuperOneClick, unplug phone from USB, power down phone, power on phone. -- this step might not be mandatory, I just did it to be on the safe side.

Hey guys... new poster here.
Just got a (Gently used) Samsung Continuum for free from Verizon after the power button on my G Droid 1 broke.
Anyways, after rcving it and realizing that it would only support Android 2.1 - I was slightly upset.
My D1 was rooted and modded to the max many times over with just about every ROM you can get.
So after reading up about IMNUTS leaking the Froyo download for the Continuum, my hopes were raised.
It is now debinged, debloated, lightening quick and amazing!
There may not be ROMS out there yet - but I truly hope some of you geniuses decide to make a few.
Just wanted to say thanks and encourage you to do some research before rooting it.
Here's what worked for me.
Odin 1.3
Continuum PIT.pit file
froyo_modem.tar.md5
cwm_recovery_test4_adryn.tar
cyan Clockwork Mod Recovery (BLUE, not yellow) (update.zip file, which is placed on the root of your SD card - renamed to update.zip)
stock_deodexed_ec03.zip (ROM)
(Place all of these files on your Desktop for easy access)
How to do it...
1. Connect your phone to your computer and Mount it.
2. Place the cyan CWM Recovery zip file to your SD card. (rename it to update.zip & do not put it in any folders. Just drag the file to your SD card - whatever drive it is listed as. Mine is my Removeable F
3. Make a new folder on your SD card. Name it whatever you want. (Mine is named "Froyo") Place the stock_deodexed_ec03.zip file in the folder on your SD card.
4. Open Odin 1.3 on your PC.
5. While your phone is off... hold the down volume button and connect it to your computer via USB. The yellow triangle will appear and it will say "Downloading". (Some people say to take the battery out, but my Odin program would not recognize my phone without the battery. Whichever works for you is fine.)
6. In Odin - Click the PIT file button. Load the Continuum.Pit.pit file into the file field. (Just double click it once you find the file from your Desktop.)
7. In Odin - Click the PDA button. Load the froyo_modem.tar.md5 file into the file field. (same as #6. Just double click it once you find the file from your Desktop.)
8. Click Start in Odin.
It should think for a minute, then say resetting, then say PASS
Then your phone will probably turn back on - turn it off again and reconnect it to your PC in download mode as stated in #5 above.
9. In Odin - Click the PDA button again. Load the cwm_recovery_test4_adryn.tar file as you did in #'s 6 and 7 above.
10. Click Start again in Odin... same as before. (thinking, resetting and PASS)
Your phone will turn on again.
11. Disconnect your phone from the computer & turn it off.
12. Hold both Volume buttons and turn it on. It will boot into the Samsung Recovery mode.
13. Use your Volume buttons to go down to highlight "apply update.zip" Then find the place where your normal Menu softkey would be and push it. The phone should then reboot into Clockwork Mod Recovery. It will be orangish.
14. In CWM, use the Volume buttons to highlight Backup/ Restore. Use the Power Button to choose it. Then at the next field, highlight Backup and make a backup.
15. After is makes the backup, press where the softkey Back button should be to go back to the original screen. From there, do a Wipe Data/ Factory reset. Do not forget to do this part.
16. Once it does the Data Wipe - go back to the main menu and and highlight & select the "zip from SD card" choice. Find your "Froyo" folder (of whatever you named it) and apply the stock_deodexed_ec03.zip file.
17. After that, go back to the main menu again and reboot your phone.
It may take a while, but your phone should restart in Froyo.
Of course, you have to re-sign in to your Google network...

Hanging at Step #5, Now what?
Thank you for sharing. Wish I could say it went as smoothly for me with my SCH-I400 Continuum... I'm still working on it! I followed recommendations of several different developers/rooters. I've installed .Net Framework 4.0 and the SDK developers kit (who knows, maybe I'll start a new hobby...), and now when I run Superoneclick it hangs at step #5 with this message:
link_image[1728]: 3252 could not load needed library 'libdiskconfig.so' for './zergRush' (load_library[1058]: Library 'libdiskconfig.so' not found)CANNOT LINK EXECUTABLE
I have rebooted the computer and the phone, unmounted the SD card, settings to allow unknown sources, and turned on USB debugging. I'm not sure why the config file can't be found, and I don't know where to get it...
Do I need to reinstall the SDK? Or install the additional Java developers software? Or am I over-complicating this whole thing?
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated...

Perhaps the easiest way is to flash a rooted ROM through Odin (or Heimdall)... Especially if you don't use Windows. This is how I did it:

Hmmm... seems we have 2 things happening hear. 1: Rooting a Samsung Continuum, and 2: Flashing a ROM...
My concern is the "hang" at step five for Rooting my Continuum SCH-I400... Cant use a ROM until the dang thing is rooted, and can't seem to figure out the hang.
Tried Z4 root from the phone rather than through the PC and it hung indefinitely... Maybe there's a related issue, and I don't care if it's Superoneclick or Z4 that gets the job done.
Has anyone gotten past the same issue?

That's where you are over complicating. You don't actually have to root BEFORE you flash a new rom, if the rom is 'prerooted'. I've never rooted this thing via s1c or z4. I simply flashed the kernels via odin and flashed the rom in cwm.

That's fine Txwolf, but still doesn't address the issue... Or the original reason for this thread - Rooting - which is is essential for the programs I am going to run, and that is what I have been asking about...

The issue seems to be that you just have to use that little search box a little better via xda or your web browser and find more information the root program your trying to use.
When you give up on that you can take txwolf1980 's advice
PS hang on step 5 in OP? Or in 3rd post? That would be getting into dl mode lol

I spent 6 hours last night troubleshooting, researching, digging deep, and "using that little search box." Seems to me You guys need to "just read the thread." It's about rooting your phone, period. If a forum is out there, I've probably read it. I'm using superoneclick to do it. SDK is installed. Net framework is installed. My error message frome SOC is above. When I am finally rooted, THEN I will install several programs - starting with a wifi tether.
I see you have the same phone as I do. Is it rooted with a one-click method? I also tried Z4root and didn't like it.

well i did read the thread...
ive been out of town for a week and finally back on my pc... i would love to help you yet more info is needed.
you are running dl17 stock 2.1 correct?
what OS is your pc running?
and yes i have same phone as you. i have used superone click on ec03 build once.
just for root. but then flashed a deodexed rom to use custom mods and apps.
and since have been flashing rooted kernels, imnuts and adrynalynne have released most all of them.
there are a few ways to root the device, best bet is, as always is go to IRC.
clarity and patience are key, we all got to practice both

I rooted EC09 with soc no problem. If I send someone the EC09 could they extract the apks and send them to me? I deleted some sys apps for the ticker and rss feeds and need them back now to use it.

Unzip factory.rfs of ec09 to grab missing apks and put them on sdcard and install from there.

FYI, my Windows Defender threat scanner just reported this SuperOneClickv2.1.1-ShortFuse.zip file as Exploit:AndroidOS/CVE-2011-1823, more specifically pointing at a file named Exploits/GingerBreak in that ZIP file.
I am going to delete this ZIP file as I no longer need it, but I got curious: Any idea what this means?

It means it'll root your phone. Some applications could try to do this without permission and do shady things with your phone. Nothing to worry about if your doing it on purpose.
